1. Conceptual study of ferromagnetic pebbles for heat exhaust in fusion reactors with short power decay length

Abstract

Ferromagnetic pebbles are investigated as high heat flux (q∥) plasma facing components in fusion devices with short power decay length (λq) on a conceptual level. The ability of a pebble concept to cope with high heat fluxes is retained and extended by the acceleration of ferromagnetic pebbles in magnetic fields. An alloying concept suited for fusion application is outlined and the compatibility of ferromagnetic pebbles with plasma operation is discussed. Steel grade 1.4510 is chosen as a well characterized candidate material to perform an analysis of the heating process. Scaling relationships as a function of q∥ for maximum and optimal pebble diameter, allowed exposure time, and removal time safety margin are obtained numerically for spherical pebble geometry. The acceleration of ferromagnetic pebbles in a tokamak resulting from magnetic gradients is studied and operation parameters for an ITER-based reactor are outlined. Counter-intuitively, it is found that ferromagnetic pebbles perform better for narrow λq profiles, making them an attractive heat exhaust concept for next step devices and thus an option to be investigated in detail. The key results of this study are that very high heat fluxes are accessible in the operation space of ferromagnetic pebbles, that ferromagnetic pebbles are compatible with tokamak operation and current divertor designs, that the heat removal capability of ferromagnetic pebbles increases as λq decreases and, finally, that for fusion relevant values of q∥ pebble diameters below 100 μm are required.

Abstract

Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) materials show a good combination of mechanical properties, with high tensile strength levels (800–1600 MPa) and an elongation at fracture of up to 10 %. For that reason ADI is a very attractive material group for applications under cyclic loads. However, the material properties are very sensitive to the applied process conditions during heat treatment. In order to optimize the microstructure in an industrial heat treatment process for ADI castings virtually, several aspects concerning microstructure formation as well as industrial heat treatment process conditions have to be considered in simulation. Coupling process simulation with virtual Design of Experiments offers a new methodology to assess and optimize heat treatment processes.

Abstract

ITER grade stainless steel (SS) 316L(N)-IG was tested in QSPA-T (photons) and JUDITH (electrons) under heat loads relevant to those expected from photon radiation on the ITER diagnostic first wall (DFW) during disruptions mitigated by massive gas injection. Repeated pulses slightly above the melting threshold eventually lead to a regular, “corrugated” SS surface, with hills and valleys spaced by 1–2 mm. The negligible mass loss observed after the heat pulses indicates that hill growth (growth rate of ∼1–2 μm per pulse) and SS plate thinning in the valleys is a result of melt-layer redistribution. A Similar behavior is observed on SS samples exposed in QSPA-T (pulse length 0.5 ms) and JUDITH (pulse length ⩽ 3.0 ms) at the same heat flux factor. The combined data suggests, for the total lifetime, a surface roughening of ⩽1.5 mm on parts of the ITER SS DFW exposed to the highest transient photon loads, after 1200 mitigated disruptions at high stored energy. The results also indicate that the surface roughness increase may be significantly reduced by variation of the SS impurity composition. This experimental observation is supported by a proposed theoretical mechanism for the surface roughness formation based on the growth of capillary waves in the melt layer.

Abstract

The microstructure of two tungsten based alloys (W-1.1%TiC and W-1.7% TiC) was characterized using light microscopy, analytical electron microscopy and electron tomography. These alloys represent a class of W based dispersion strengthened alloys with TiC used as strengthening particles. Addition of TiC leads to improved creep resistance and tensile strength of the W based alloys. The results show that the W-1.7%TiC alloy exhibits large scatter in grain size, much higher porosity and contains also Ti-O particles. The W-1.1%TiC alloy has fine grained microstructure with uniformly distributed fine TiC particles within the matrix and low porosity. As a result of the different microstructure, the W-1.1%TiC alloy exhibits better mechanical properties, when compared to the W-1.7%TiC alloy.

Abstract

Within the ITER divertor lifetime millions of transient events are expected during H-mode operation due to edge localized modes (type I ELMs). These will deposit their energy on plasma facing materials that are pre-heated to various surface temperatures, depending on the steady state heat load (SSHL) at the respective location, leading to synergistic effects. An electron beam facility was used to simulate ELM-like heat loads with ITER relevant power densities (≈0.5 GW/m2) and pulse duration (0.5 ms). At the same time additional SSHL was applied to obtain different base temperatures. Experiments were performed on actively cooled pure tungsten and the carbon fiber composite (CFC) NB41, applying 103–106 pulses of 0.5 ms duration with a power density of 0.14–0.55 GW/m2 and 0.55–0.68 GW/m2 on tungsten and CFC, respectively. Surface temperatures were about 200 °C, 400 °C and 700 °C for tungsten and about 450 °C for CFC. Crack formation in tungsten was preceded by roughening due to plastic deformation. In case of Tsurf ≈ 200 °C cracks propagated comparably fast (brittle material), while slow propagation and recrystallization around the crack edges indicated fatigue damage at higher temperatures. Compared to tungsten, CFC showed a higher damage threshold.

The thermal shock behavior of ceramic refractory materials is of particular interest. These materials are usually tested in downward thermal shocks by cooling hot specimens in water or air. In contrast to this method, the use of electron beam material testing facilities offers an alternative approach to perform thermal shock tests on heating. The method of thermal shock testing by an electron beam is introduced for ceramic refractory materials within this article. Finally, the material degradation of a carbon bonded MgO refractory material due to thermals shocks, applied with the electron beam, is presented.

Abstract

Beryllium is one of the most interesting materials to be used in nuclear fusion devices due to its promising properties. However, testing of beryllium components is quite challenging because of its toxicity and the required safety procedures. Within this paper an overview of high heat flux thermal fatigue tests carried out in the electron beam facility JUDITH 2 (Juelich Divertor Test Facility in the Hot Cells) at Forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ) on actively cooled beryllium mock ups is given. The performance of the mock ups was documented by temperature measurements as well as optical inspections before and after testing. Special attention was paid to the temperature diagnostics during the tests for two different reasons. Firstly, local overheating of the beryllium tiles, which are the proof of bonding failures, is detected by temperature measurements. Secondly, temperature information is exceptionally important to meet the required safety standards because of the toxicity of beryllium. In order to avoid evaporation of beryllium, a temperature limit for an automatic safety shut down of the electron beam facility JUDITH 2 was set to a certain value. Finally examples of the temperature distribution under different loading conditions for the beryllium mock ups are presented within this paper.

Paper introduces thermal fatigue testing devices, developed and operated under fusion-related projects with focus on testing of ITER First Wall (FW) mock-ups. In frame of EFDA tasks, FW mock-up testing device was developed and put into operation in Centrum Výzkumu Řež s.r.o. (CV Rez) research centre, and one testing device was modified for thermal fatigue tests in Forsungszentrum Julich (FZJ) research centre. The FW mock-ups were tested for several parties, where the key role was played by Fusion for Energy (F4E), the European Union's Joint Undertaking for ITER and the Development of Fusion Energy.

Abstract

Tungsten and its alloys are considered as structural materials for plasma-facing applications. The divertor design requires a material with a low ductile?brittle transition temperature and a recrystallization temperature (TR) of about 1570?K. One of the materials under consideration is W?1.7%TiC. The aim of this work was to perform a detailed microstructural characterization of the two materials, pure W and W?1.7%TiC alloy, by electron microscopy and a new technique, electron tomography. Thin foil preparation for transmission electron microscopy investigation of W-based materials is extremely difficult. After many trials by various techniques, a method for thin foil preparation was successfully elaborated and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) investigation was carried out. A pure tungsten specimen was investigated as a reference material. The application of TEM and focused ion beam?scanning electron microscopy techniques enables the identification of some creep-induced features in pure tungsten and the determination of the size and morphology of three-dimensional pores and particles in W?TiC-based alloy.

Abstract

Transient thermal loads in magnetic confinement experiments such as ITER have a strong impact on the material degradation of the plasma-facing components. In particular, the thermal loads for plasma-facing components in nuclear fusion devices are extraordinarily high. Within the ITER-like wall project, realized at JET, some of the plasma-facing components in the divertor region are made of tungsten-coated carbon fiber composite (CFC). These tungsten coatings were tested under ELM (edge-localized modes)-like loading conditions in an electron beam material testing facility to determine the thermal shock resistance. The failure occurrence and damage thresholds depending on base temperature and absorbed power density with special emphasis on the microstructure of the underlying CFC substrate are described in detail.

Combined thermal shock and steady-state heat loads (SSHLs) can have an impact on divertor materials and are therefore important for lifetime estimations and evaluations of operational thresholds of divertor components in future fusion devices such as ITER. This paper discusses the results of tests performed in the electron beam facility JUDITH 2 (Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany) on actively cooled tungsten specimens, loaded with edge-localized mode-like thermal shocks (pulse duration 0.48 ms, power densities 0.14–0.55 GW m−2, frequency 25 Hz and up to 1000 000 pulses) either with or without an additional SSHL of 10 MW m−2. The material showed no damage at 0.14 GW m−2 (independent of the SSHL) for up to 250 000 pulses. At a power density of 0.27 GW m−2 (without SSHL), surface roughening occurred at 100 000 pulses, developing into a crack network at 1000 000 pulses. In general, the additional SSHL resulted in an earlier (in terms of pulse number) and more severe material degradation.

Abstract

Plasma facing components in future thermonuclear fusion devices will be subjected to intense transient thermal loads due to type I edge localized modes (ELMs), plasma disruptions, etc. To exclude irreversible damage to the divertor targets, local energy deposition must remain below the damage threshold for the selected wall materials. For monolithic tungsten (pure tungsten and tungsten alloys) power densities above ≈0.3 GW m−2 with 1 ms duration result in the formation of a dense crack network. Thin tungsten coatings for the so-called ITER-like wall in JET, which have been deposited on a two-directional carbon–fibre composite (CFC) material, are even less resistant to thermal shock damage; here the threshold values are by a factor of 2 lower. First ELM-simulation experiments with high cycle numbers up to 104 cycles on actively cooled bulk tungsten targets do not reveal any cracks for absorbed power densities up to 0.2 GW m−2 and ELM-durations in the sub-millisecond range (0.8 ms); at somewhat higher power densities (0.27 GW m−2, Δt = 0.5 ms) cracks have been detected for 106 cycles.

Abstract

A heat load experiment was carried out with a new kind of probe for the detection of the damage caused by runaway electrons. The probe was inserted into the plasma edge of the tokamak TEXTOR during an induced disruption. The damages, caused by the disruption generated runaway electrons in the probe material, are evaluated by metallographical and thermogravimetrical methods. In comparison with 3D Geant4 code based Monte Carlo simulations of the runaways information about the energy spectrum and the radial decay of the runaway beam behind a limiter are deduced. The results are in good agreement with an exponential energy spectrum (e-folding energy 3?9?MeV) and corresponding exponential or linear radial decay. Reasonable parameter ranges for the distributions are given. Additional simulations show that the measurement gives the strongest results for the spectral part of the runaways with energies between 8 and 16?MeV.

Abstract

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract

The chosen materials for plasma facing components for the deuterium/tritium phase of ITER are beryllium and tungsten. These materials have already been widely investigated in various devices like ion beam or electron beam tests. However, the operation of this material combination in a large tokamak including plasma wall interaction, material degradation, erosion and material mixing has not been proven yet. The ITER-like Wall, which has been recently installed in JET, consists of a combination of bulk tungsten and tungsten coated CFC divertor tiles as well as bulk beryllium and beryllium coated INCONEL in the main chamber. The experiments in JET will provide the first fully representative test of the ITER material choice under relevant conditions. This paper concentrates on material research and developments for the materials of the JET ITER-like Wall with respect to mechanical and thermal properties. The impact of these materials and components on the JET operating limits with the ITER-like Wall and implications for the ongoing scientific program will be summarised.
