A search for a diffuse flux of astrophysical muon neutrinos, using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. A (0.83 × 2π) sr sky was monitored for a total of 334 days of equivalent live time. The searched signal corresponds to an excess of events, produced by astrophysical sources, over the expected atmospheric neutrino background. The observed number of events is found compatible with the background expectation. Assuming an E−2 flux spectrum, a 90% c.l. upper limit on the diffuse νμ flux of E2Φ90% = 5.3 × 10−8 GeVcm−2 s−1 sr−1 in the energy range 20 TeV–2.5 PeV is obtained. Other signal models with different energy spectra are also tested and some rejected.

The ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope comprises a three-dimensional array of photomultipliers to detect the Cherenkov light induced by upgoing relativistic charged particles originating from neutrino interactions in the vicinity of the detector. The large scattering length of light in the deep sea facilitates an angular resolution of a few tenths of a degree for neutrino energies exceeding 10 TeV. In order to achieve this optimal performance, the time calibration procedures should ensure a relative time calibration between the photomultipliers at the level of ~1 ns. The present invention concerns an energy conversion and accumulation device usable for the extraction of energy from the environment outside the device, and the relative conversion and accumulation method. In particular the present invention is applied t electronic circuits for the extraction of environmental energy, as for example mechanical, thermal or light energy, in order to accumulate it in electric form and/or to transfer it so as to feed an associated electric user device.

Let R be a ring with 1 and En (R) be the subgroup of GLn(R) generated by the matrices I + reij, r ∈ R, i ≠ j. We prove that the subgroup of consisting of the matrices of shape , where and , is (2, 3, 7)-generated whenever R is finitely generated and n, are large enough.

A finite non-trivial group G is called a Hurwitz group if it is an image of the infinite triangle group formula here Thus G is a Hurwitz group if and only if it can be generated by an involution and an element of order 3 whose product has order 7. The history of Hurwitz groups dates back to 1879, when Klein [ 9 ] was studying the quartic formula here of genus 3. The automorphism group of this curve has order 168 = 84(3−1), and it is isomorphic to the simple group PSL 2 (7), which is generated by the projective images of the matrices formula here with product formula here and so is a Hurwitz group. In 1893, Hurwitz [ 7 ] proved that the automorphism group of an algebraic curve of genus g (or, equivalently, of a compact Riemann surface of genus g ) always has order at most 84( g −1), and that, moreover, a finite group of order 84( g −1) can act faithfully on a curve of genus g if and only if it is an image of Δ(2, 3, 7). The problem of determining which finite simple groups are Hurwitz groups has received considerable attention. In [ 10 ], Macbeath classified the Hurwitz groups of type PSL 2 ( q ); there are infinitely many of them. In [ 1 ] Cohen proved that no group PSL 3 ( q ) is a Hurwitz group except PSL 3 (2), which is isomorphic to PSL 2 (7). Certain exceptional groups of Lie type, and some of the sporadic groups, are known to be Hurwitz groups. For discussions of the results on these groups we refer the reader to [ 3 , 5 , 11 ].

Evidence has been presented suggesting the involvement of integrins and their ligands in mammalian fertilization. In this study we asked whether the alpha 5, alpha v, beta 1 and beta 3 integrin chains, which form receptors for fibronectin and vitronectin, are present on human spermatozoa. Fresh ejaculate spermatozoa and capacitated spermatozoa, before and after a calcium ionophore (A23187)-induced acrosome reaction, were either fixed and their reaction with anti-integrin monoclonal antibodies detected by immunoperoxidase staining or studied without fixation, using cytofluorimetric scanning. Expression of specific integrin chains varied with the functional state of spermatozoa. The alpha 5 chain was not detected on fresh living spermatozoa, but was present on capacitated spermatozoa, whether fixed or living. The pattern of beta 1 expression on living spermatozoa paralleled that of alpha 5. No further increase in the expression of either alpha 5 or beta 1 was observed following an ionophore-promoted acrosome reaction. In contrast, alpha v was detected on neither fresh, living ejaculate spermatozoa, nor following capacitation (< 10% reactive). The percentage of alpha v positive cells increased substantially following ionophore exposure. Expression of beta 3 was similar to alpha v, and the percentage of cells displaying beta 3 correlated with the proportion of spermatozoa that had undergone an acrosome reaction, following ionophore exposure. These results indicate that the expression of integrins on spermatozoa is dynamic, varying with their functional state and that integrin receptors for fibronectin (alpha 5 beta 1) become apparent on the spermatozoan surface during capacitation and vitronectin (alpha v beta 3) following the acrosome reaction.

Intravenous heparin has been used in the control of myocardial ischaemia in patients with unstable angina. We set out to assess the efficacy of subcutaneous heparin in reducing myocardial ischaemia in patients with unstable angina. 343 of 399 patients with unstable angina were monitored for 24 h and 108 were refractory to conventional antianginal treatment and were entered into a randomised multicentre trial. 37 patients were assigned to heparin infusion (partial thromboplastin time 1·5-2 times baseline), 35 to subcutaneous heparin (adjusted dose with partial thromboplastin time 1·5-2 times baseline), and 36 to aspirin (325 mg daily). All had additional conventional antianginal therapy. After the run-in patients were monitored for 3 days. The primary endpoint was reduced myocardial ischaemia assessed by the number of anginal attacks, silent ischaemic episodes, and duration of ischaemia per day. At 1 week and 1 month we accounted for anginal attacks and other clinical events (myocardial infarction, revascularisation procedures, and death). Aspirin did not significantly affect the incidence of myocardial ischaemia. On the first 3 days, infused and subcutaneous heparin significantly decreased the frequency of angina (on average by 91% and 86%, respectively), episodes of silent ischaemia (by 56% and 46%), and the overall duration of ischaemia (66% and 61%) versus run-in day and aspirin (p

We study a class of finite p-groups admitting faithful irreducible complex representations of distinct degrees. In particular, for every prime p, we produce an example of such a p-group having minimal order p 8.

EuroSITES is a European FP7 Collaborative Project which will integrate Europe's existing deep ocean observatories and contribute both to the subsea component of GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) and to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Beginning in Spring 2008, EuroSITES will focus on enhancing and standardising the current in situ infrastructure of 9 European deep ocean sites through best practice and common data management. The main objectives, scope and structure of EuroSITES will be presented within the context of other European and international projects and initiatives including ESONET, EMSO, ARGO, HERMES, MERSEA, OOI, Ocean- SITES, ORION and NEPTUNE. Close interaction between these and other relevant projects is essential to develop a unified approach to European and International ocean observation. The importance of the EuroSITES Oversight Committee will be highlighted as a key advisory panel and driver throughout the duration of the project, involving leading international scientists and key end users of ocean observational data such as the modelling community, data managers and outreach specialists. The EuroSITES community supports Research and Development of innovative ocean observation technology. Specific science missions to be carried out within EuroSITES including the measurement of deep ocean oxygen consumption, mesozooplankton and pH will be briefly described. These all aim to progress European ocean observation technology beyond the current state-of-the-art.

It is shown that a Carter subgroup of a non-soluble unitary group can only be the normalizer of a Sylow 2-subgroup. This result, combined with previous results, implies that no finite simple group can be a minimal counterexample to the conjugacy conjecture of Carter subgroups in a finite group.

Let F be a field and, for i = 1,2, let G i be a group and V i an irreducible, primitive, finite dimensional FG i -module. Set G = G 1 \times G 2 and $V=V_1\otimes _F V_2$ . The main aim of this paper is to determine sufficient conditions for V to be primitive as a G-module. In particular this turns out to be the case if V 1 and V 2 are absolutely irreducible and V 1 is absolutely quasi-primitive. Thus we extend a result of N.S. Heckster, who has shown that V is primitive whenever G is finite and F is the complex field. We also give a characterization of absolutely quasi-primitive modules. Ultimately, our results rely on the classification of finite simple groups.

The favourable effects of heparin therapy remained evident during follow-up. Only minor bleeding complications occurred. Subcutaneous heparin is effective in the control of myocardial ischaemia in patients with unstable angina.

PROBLEM: To develop an additional approach for the study of colemmal surface moieties involved in gamete interactions, we decided to obtain monoclonal antibodies by intrasplenic injection of human and hamster oocytes in Balb/c mice, METHOD: Two Balb/c males were injected three times intrasplenically at 15-day intervalS with approximately 40 zona-free hamster and 3-5 zona-free human oocytes. After the third injection, spleen cells were fused and hybridomas developed. We used a novel screening system based upon the use of sections of frozen human and hamster eggs, tested by means of indirect immunofluorescence. The antibodies that we produced were evaluated for their ability to interfere with the zona-free hamster eggs penetration by human spermatozoa. The B2B5 antibody was also developed as ascitic fluid and further characterized. RESULTS: Seven antibodies reactive with hamster oocytes were produced. Six of them also reacted with human oolemmas. The binding was confined to the oolemma, and no staining of the zona nor the cytoplasm was present. One of these antibodies reduced the penetration of zona-free hamster eggs by human spermatozoa. This antibody, B2B5, an IgM kappa, was confirmed to interact with the colemma by means of indirect immunofluorescence of fresh eggs and Covasphere binding. B2B5 did not react with other human or hamster tissues except capacitated human spermatozoa. The reactivity with the oolemma of hamster oocytes was not lost after egg penetration by human sperm. CONCLUSIONS: Intrasplenic immunization using zona-free human and hamster oocytes allows the production of anti-oolemma antibodies. A system of screening based upon the use of sections of frozen eggs also allows an easy and quick scoring of many supernatants. B2B5 monoclonal anti-oolemma antibody deserves further studies in that is able to interfere with fertilization and its antigen appears to be confined to the gametes surface

Hypertension represents a major health problem for black populations living in Western countries. In particular, blacks living in the United States have a three- to fivefold greater mortality from hypertensive disease than do whites. Better knowledge of the pathophysiology of hypertension in blacks can aid in the treatment of recently urbanized black people coming to Italy from African countries. Hypertension occurs more frequently in blacks than in whites, due to increased volemia; this characteristic seems to be related to a genetically determined increase in sodium sensitivity. Environmental factors seem to play a relevant role. Several studies performed on blacks migrating from rural to urban areas both in Africa and the USA, have shown that urbanization is closely related to increased blood pressure. The occurrence of cardiac and cerebrovascular complications of hypertension also seems to be closely related to socioeconomic factors. In fact, recently immigrated black people often lack health care facilities and consequently have poor control of hypertension. The environmental factors could be overcome by implementing systems to improve health care facilities, in particular blood pressure control, for recently urbanized blacks.

It is well-known that every finite simple group is 2-generated, i.e. it can be generated by two suitable elements. This is the topic discussed in §1, which centers around Steinberg’s unified treatment of groups of Lie type. In §2 we discuss generation of simple groups by special kinds of generating pairs, namely: 1) the generation of simple groups of Lie type by a cyclic maximal torus and a long root element, with application to the solution of the Magnus-Gorchakov-Levchuk conjecture on residual properties of free groups; 2) the generation of a simple group by an involution and another suitable element. With regard to 1), we also mention similar 2-generation results in connection with Galois groups; with regard to 2), emphasis is put on (2,3)-generation and Hurwitz generation of finite simple groups. Finally, §3 deals with generating sets of involutions of minimal size. Most finite simple groups are generated by three involutions. Generation results, a non-generation criterion, and a relation between (2,3)-generation and generation by three involutions are illustrated.

From January 1989 to June 1991, 18 patients ranging in age from 19 to 41 (mean 34) years with testicular tumor were examined. 14 patients had seminoma (11 typical and 3 spermatocytic) and 4 patients had a mixed form (2 seminoma + embryonal tumor and 2 seminoma + teratocarcinoma). Serum levels of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin and alpha-fetoprotein from peripheral venous blood and from spermatic venous vessel were evaluated in every patient. All patients with seminoma and in a patient with mixed tumor (seminoma + embryonal tumor) the markers were regular. The increase of the markers was found in the peripheral and in spermatic blood of 3 patients (2 seminoma + embryonal carcinoma and 1 seminoma + teratocarcinoma). For these reasons the values of spermatic vessels are an important confirmation of the level of peripheral markers.

Let F be the class of finite groups which contain nonconjugate Carter subgroups and assume that F is nonempty. Then it has been shown that a member of F , of minimal order, should be an almost simple group A. In this paper, using CFSG, we restrict the possibilities for such A: in particular we show that A cannot be simple, except possibly when it is a unitary group.

Ž . We say that a group is 2, 2 = 2 -generated if it can be generated by three involutions, two of which commute. The problem of determining Ž . which finite simple groups are 2, 2 = 2 -generated was posed by Mazurov w x in 1980 in the Kourovka notebook 3 . An answer to this problem, for some classes of finite simple groups, was given by Ya. N. Nuzhin, namely for w x Chevalley groups of rank 1 in 4 , for Chevalley groups over a field of w x characteristic 2 in 5 , and for the alternating groups and Chevalley groups w x of type A in 6 . In this paper we consider the problem in the more n general context of matrix groups over arbitrary, finitely generated, commutative rings. As a special case of our results, stated in Theorems A, B, and Ž . C below, we obtain that most finite classical groups are 2, 2 = 2 generated, for sufficiently large rank. These groups include Chevalley groups of type B , C , and D in odd characteristic. From January 1986 up January 1988 a series of 18 patients--age average 49--were studied. All of them had undergone the amputation of the rectum for carcinoma with the Miles resection technique (15 p.), or for ulcerous rectumcolitis (3 p.). Six months after operation the patients were given a questionnaire in order to obtain information about their sexual activity. Exams on the liverkidney functioning, the hormone dosage (FSH, LH, prolactin, testosterone), penile Doppler flowmetry, and the sacral latency test were performed. The patients were also given a Jonas erectiometer to be used at home. The procedures followed have shown in most patients normal hormonal, vascular, and neurologic parameters, thus confirming the absence of relevant erectile deficits. Only one patient no longer had erections after the surgical intervention. It was reported a decrease and some sort of difficulty in the sexual intercourse owing to the presence of colostomy conditioning the physical and psychological relations with the partner. Spermatic fluid results altered after operation: absent in 8 cases, backwards in 3, diminished in 6, and normal in 4.
