While racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic group disparities in cognitive impairment and dementia prevalence are well-documented among community-dwelling older adults, little is known about these disparity trends among older adults receiving Medicaid-funded home- and community-based services (HCBS) in lieu of nursing home admission. The authors determined how dementia prevalence and cognitive impairment severity compare by race, ethnicity, educational attainment, and neighborhood context in a Medicaid HCBS population.A cross-sectional study in Connecticut.Adults age ≥65 in the HCBS program, January-March 2019 (N = 3,520).The data source was Connecticut's HCBS program Universal Assessment tool. The authors employed two outcomes: Cognitive Performance Scale (CPS2), a 9-point measure ranging from cognitively intact-very severe impairment; and presence or not of either diagnosed dementia or CPS2 score ≥4 (major impairment). Neighborhood context was measured using the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI).Cohort characteristics: 75.7% female; mean(SD) age = 79.1(8.2); Non-Hispanic White = 47.8%; Hispanic = 33.6%; Non-Hispanic Black = 15.9%. Covariate-adjusted multivariate analyses revealed no dementia/major impairment prevalence differences among White, Black, and Hispanic individuals, but impairment severity was greater among Hispanic participants (b = 0.22; p = 0.02). People with more than HS education had less severe impairment (b = -0.12; p0.001) and lower likelihood of dementia/major impairment (AOR = 0.61; p0.001). Dementia/major impairment likelihood and impairment severity were greater in less socially vulnerable neighborhoods.Racial and ethnic group differences in cognitive impairment are less pronounced in Medicaid-funded HCBS cohorts than in other community-dwelling older adult cohorts. SVI results suggest that, among other possible explanations, older adults with dementia may move to lower social vulnerability neighborhoods where supportive family members reside.

Objective: Frailty and late-life depression (LLD) often coexist and share several structural brain changes. We aimed to study the joint effect LLD and frailty have on brain structure. Design: Cross-sectional study Setting: Academic Health Center Participants: Thirty-one participants (14 LLD+Frail and 17 Never-depressed+Robust) Measurement: LLD was diagnosed by a geriatric psychiatrist according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition for single episode or recurrent major depressive disorder without psychotic features. Frailty was assessed using the FRAIL scale (0–5), classifying subjects as robust (0), prefrail (1–2), and frail (3–5). Participants underwent T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in which covariance analysis of subcortical volumes and vertex-wise analysis of cortical thickness values were performed to access changes in grey matter. Participants also underwent diffusion tensor imaging in which tract-based spatial statistics was used with voxel-wise statistical analysis on fractional anisotropy and mean diffusion values to assess changes in white matter (WM). Results: We found a significant difference in mean diffusion values (48,225 voxels; peak voxel: pFWER=0.005, MINI coord. (X,Y,Z) = −26,−11,27) between the LLD-Frail group and comparison group. The corresponding effect size (f=0.808) was large. Conclusion: We showed the LLD+Frailty group is associated with significant microstructural changes within WM tracts compared to Never-depressed+Robust individuals. Our findings indicate the possibility of a heightened neuroinflammatory burden as a potential mechanism underlying the co-occurrence of both conditions and the possibility of a depression–frailty phenotype in older adults.

Solo agers may be vulnerable to social isolation and mental health sequelae, particularly if they lack close family or friendship ties. This study examined associations among indicators of solo aging, frequency of loneliness, and Major Depressive Disorder among adults aged 60+. Depressed participants were diagnosed by a geriatric psychiatrist and control participants were not depressed. We hypothesized that older adults with more indicators of solo aging (i.e., living alone, being unmarried, not having family or friends nearby) would be more often lonely and more likely to be depressed. In multivariate analyses controlling for health comorbidities and financial difficulty, each additional solo aging indicator significantly increased the likelihood of frequent loneliness, 95% CI OR [1.50, 2.80], and having a depression diagnosis 95% CI OR [1.04, 2.07]. Solo agers may be vulnerable to loneliness and depression, reinforcing the need for assessment and intervention for social isolation among older adults.

ObjectiveMajor depression in older adults increases the statistical likelihood of dementia. It is challenging to translate statistical evidence of cognitive decline at the group level into knowledge of individual cognitive outcomes. The objective of the current study is to investigate 2-year reliable cognitive change in late-life depression (LLD), which will enhance understanding of cognitive changes in LLD and provide a means to assess individual change.MethodsIn a sample of non-depressed cognitively normal older adults or NDCN (n = 113), we used linear regression to predict tests of global cognition, processing speed-executive functioning, and memory administered 1 and 2 years later. Stepwise regression was used to select covariates among demographics and raw test scores (either baseline or year 1) and we cross-validated the final models using the predicted residual error sum of squares (PRESS). We then derived a z-change score from the difference between actual and predicted follow-up scores and investigated the proportion of LLD patients (n = 199) and NDCN adults who experienced reliable “decline” (a z-score +1.645).ResultsA greater proportion LLD compared with NDCN experienced cognitive decline in processing speed/executive functioning and global cognition over 2 years. When compared to NDCN, a greater proportion of LLD also significantly improved on one test of processing speed over 2 years.ConclusionsOlder adults with LLD are at risk of meaningful cognitive decline over a relatively short period, particularly in the domain of executive functioning and processing speed. This study provides a series of reliable change equations for common neuropsychological tests that can be applied clinically.

Pyrroloindolines bearing a C3-N linkage comprise the core of many biologically active natural products, but many methods toward their synthesis are limited by the sterics or electronics of the product. We report a single electron-based approach for the synthesis of this scaffold and demonstrate high-yielding aminations, regardless of electronic or steric demands. The transformation uses copper wire and isopropanol to promote the reaction. The broad synthetic utility of this heterogeneous copper-catalyzed approach to access pyrroloindolines, diketopiperazine, furoindoline, and (+)-asperazine is included, along with experiments to provide insight into the mechanism of this new process.

Background Older, compared with younger, patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) typically have lower response and remission rates with poorer tolerability to antidepressant treatment. This post-hoc analysis compared outcomes following treatment with esketamine nasal spray (ESK) between younger (18-64 years) and older (≥65 years) patients with TRD. Methods SUSTAIN-2, an up to 1-year open-label safety and efficacy study of ESK plus an oral antidepressant, included patients with TRD either directly enrolled (≥18-year) or transferred from a phase 3 double-blind study, TRANSFORM-3 (≥65-year). Patients were treated in two phases: 4-week induction and 48-week optimization/maintenance. Results Younger (n = 624) and older (n = 178) patients had similar baseline characteristics except for hypertension history (21.5% versus 48.3%, respectively). Patients (younger versus older) had similar mean baseline Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total scores and mean (SD) reductions in MADRS total scores for induction (-18.0 [7.19] versus -18.1 [9.37]; p = 0.492 [t = 0.69, df = 701]) and optimization/maintenance (week 12) (-19.9 [7.03] versus -22.2 [9.50]; p = 0.265 [t = -1.12, df = 3470]) phases. Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) reported in younger versus older patients, respectively, were: induction, 86.1% versus 74.8%; optimization/maintenance, 86.8% versus 81.0%; serious TEAEs: induction, 2.2% versus 1.9%; optimization/maintenance, 6.7% versus 4.8%; TEAEs of increased blood pressure: induction, 6.9% versus 6.5%; optimization/maintenance, 7.1% versus 9.5%; and falls: induction, 0.3% versus 0.6%; optimization/maintenance, 0.2% versus 0.8%. Cognitive tests did not show clinically meaningful differences between the age groups. Conclusions Although limited by the open-label design of SUSTAIN-2, this post-hoc analysis showed generally comparable improvement in depression between ESK-treated younger and older adult patients with TRD, with consistent safety outcomes.

Objectives:The relationships among depression, personality factors, and cognitive decline in the elderly are complex. Depressed elders score higher in neuroticism than nondepressed older individuals. Presence of neuroticism worsens cognitive decline in depressed older adults. Yet little is known about changes in neuroticism among older adults being treated for depression and the impact of these changes on cognitive decline.Design:Longitudinal observational study.Setting:Academic Health Center.Participants:We examined 68 participants in the neurobiology of late-life depression (LLD) study to test the hypothesis that older depressed subjects with more improvement in neuroticism would experience less cognitive decline compared with those with less change in neuroticism.Measurements:We measured neuroticism using the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised at baseline and 1 year. Study psychiatrists measured depression using the Montgomery–Åsberg depression rating scale (MADRS). Global cognitive performance was measured using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s disease (CERAD) battery at baseline and annually over 3 years. Regression models of 1-year change in neuroticism and 3-year change in CERAD included sex, age, race, education, and 1-year change in MADRS score as covariates.Results:We found that among older adults, 1-year change in neuroticism was inversely associated with 3-year change in CERAD total score.Conclusions:Our findings challenge the notion of longitudinal stability of measures of personality, especially among older depressed individuals. They highlight the importance of repeated personality assessment, especially of neuroticism, in the management of LLD. Future studies in larger samples followed for longer periods are needed to confirm our results and to extend them to examine both cognitive change and development of dementia.

Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender-based division of paid and unpaid work persists. To identify how psychological factors, national policies, and the broader sociocultural context contribute to this inequality, we assessed parental-leave intentions in young adults (18–30 years old) planning to have children (N = 13,942; 8,880 identified as women; 5,062 identified as men) across 37 countries that varied in parental-leave policies and societal gender equality. In all countries, women intended to take longer leave than men. National parental-leave policies and women’s political representation partially explained cross-national variations in the gender gap. Gender gaps in leave intentions were paradoxically larger in countries with more gender-egalitarian parental-leave policies (i.e., longer leave available to both fathers and mothers). Interestingly, this cross-national variation in the gender gap was driven by cross-national variations in women’s (rather than men’s) leave intentions. Financially generous leave and gender-egalitarian policies (linked to men’s higher uptake in prior research) were not associated with leave intentions in men. Rather, men’s leave intentions were related to their individual gender attitudes. Leave intentions were inversely related to career ambitions. Imaging in the shortwave-infrared region (SWIR, λ = 1000-2500 nm) has the potential to enable deep tissue imaging with high resolution. Critical to the development of these methods is the identification of low molecular weight, biologically compatible fluorescent probes that emit beyond 1000 nm. Exchanging the bridging oxygen atom on the xanthene scaffold (C10' position) with electron withdrawing groups has been shown to lead to significant redshifts in absorbance and emission. Guided by quantum chemistry computational modeling studies, we investigated the installation of a ketone bridge at the C10' position. This simple modification extends the absorbance maxima to 860 nm and the emission beyond 1000 nm, albeit with reduced photon output. Overall, these studies demonstrate that broadly applied xanthene dyes can be extended into the SWIR range.

The relationships among depression, personality factors, stress, and cognitive decline in the elderly are complex. Depressed elders score higher in neuroticism than nondepressed older individuals. Independently, the presence of neuroticism and the number of stressful life events are each associated with worsening cognitive decline in depressed older adults. Yet little is known about combined effects of changes in neuroticism and changes in stress on cognitive decline among older depressed adults.Longitudinal observational study.Academic Health Center.The authors examined 62 participants in the Neurobiology of Late-life depression (NBOLD) study to test the hypothesis that, compared with older depressed subjects who experience improved neuroticism and lower psychosocial stressors over time, those with worsening neuroticism and greater psychosocial stressors will demonstrate more cognitive decline.The authors measured neuroticism using the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised at baseline and 1 year. Study psychiatrists measured depression using the Montgomery-Ǻsberg Depression Rating Scale. At annual assessments, subjects reported the number of psychosocial stressors in the prior year and completed a neuropsychological evaluation. Participants completed a detailed neuropsychological battery at baseline and annually over 3 years. The battery included a test of delayed story memory (Logical Memory-2 or LMII). The outcome 3-year change in cognitive scores was regressed against 3-year change scores of neuroticism and number of psychosocial stressors, plus their interaction, while adjusting for sex, age, race, education, baseline cognitive score, and 3-year change in MADRS score as covariates.In multivariable linear regression analysis with the above covariates, the interaction effect of 3-year change in Total Neuroticism score and 3-year change in Total Stressors on change in LMII performance was statistically significant (B = -0.080[95%CL: -0.145 to -0.015], T = -2.48, df = 52, p = 0.017). Further exploration of this finding showed that 1) when total stressors increased by 2 or more over 3 years, LMII change was inversely associated with neuroticism change; and 2) when neuroticism improved less, LMII change score was inversely associated with total stressor change. There were no other significant interactions between stress and neuroticism on cognition.Our findings document the importance of tracking change in neuroticism and monitoring psychosocial stress over the long-term course of treatment in geriatric depression. Both factors exert important combined effects on memory over time. Future studies in larger samples are needed to confirm our results and to extend them to examine both cognitive change and development of dementia.

ImportanceTelomere attribution is one of biological aging hallmarks and may be intervened to target multiple aging-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease related dementias (AD/ADRD).ObjectiveTo assess associations of leukocyte telomere length (TL) with AD/ADRD and early markers of AD/ADRD, including cognitive performance and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phenotypes.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsData from European-ancestry participants in the UK Biobank (n=435,046) were used to evaluate whether mid-life leukocyte TL is associated with incident AD/ADRD over a mean follow-up of 12.2 years. In a subsample without AD/ADRD and with brain imaging data (n=43,390), we associated TL with brain MRI phenotypes related to AD or vascular dementia pathology.ExposuresRelative mean leukocyte TL at baseline was measured in T/S ratio, using a multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction technique by comparing the amount of the telomere amplification product (T) to that of a single-copy gene (S).Main Outcomes and MeasuresAD/ADRD was confirmed by mapping multi-source data to 3-charcter ICD codes (G30; F00; F01; F03; G31), excluding other-cause dementias (F02).ResultsLonger TL was associated with a lower risk of incident AD/ADRD (adjusted HR [aHR] per SD=0.93, 95% CI 0.90 to 0.96, P=3.37×10−7). Longer TL also was associated with better cognitive performance in specific cognitive domains, larger hippocampus volume (adjusted standardized β [aβ] per SD=0.012, 95% CI 0.003 to 0.021, P=0.012), lower total volume of white matter hyperintensities (aβ per SD= -0.015, 95% CI -0.024 to -0.006, P=0.002), and higher fractional anisotropy (FA; aβ per SD=0.018, 95% CI 0.009 to 0.027, P=9.44×10−5) and lower mean diffusivity (MD; aβ per SD=0.045, 95% CI 0.035 to 0.056, P=1.07×10−17) in the fornix.Conclusions and RelevanceLonger TL is a protective factor against AD/ADRD, cognitive impairment, and brain structural lesions toward the development of AD/ADRD. INTRODUCTION The relationship between persistent loneliness and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is unclear. We examined the relationship between different types of mid-life loneliness and the development of dementia and AD. METHODS Loneliness was assessed in cognitively normal adults using one item from the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. We defined loneliness as no loneliness, transient loneliness, incident loneliness,or persistent loneliness, and applied Cox regression models and Kaplan-Meier plots with dementia and AD as outcomes (n = 2880). RESULTS After adjusting for demographics, social network, physical health, and apolipoprotein E e4, persistent loneliness was associated with higher (hazard ratio [HR], 1.91; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.25-2.90; P

Since the increase in numbers of refugees worldwide, the acceptance of refugees in host countries is a highly contested topic. Negative attitudes towards refugees pose a challenge to both integration efforts and social cohesion. So-called paradoxical interventions help mitigating such extreme attitudes, but little is known about the cognitive processes elicited by these interventions. This research investigated whether a paradoxical leading-questions intervention targeting anti-refugee attitudes increases cognitive flexibility, especially among those with anti-refugee attitudes. Results of two preregistered experiments with general-population samples (N= 306) provide evidence that participants with anti-refugee attitudes showed higher cognitive flexibility in the paradoxical condition compared to control conditions. Thereby, this research proposes a cognitive foundation for the benefits of paradoxical interventions in intergroup contexts and suggests novel indications as to why these interventions are effective. We discuss the potential of paradoxical interventions for other important socially contested contexts, such as vaccination and climate change.

Dementia, depression, and delirium alone or in combination (3Ds) can threaten independence among older adults, and polypharmacy may further accelerate decline. Clinical pharmacists can play an important role on multidisciplinary home-based care teams by identifying medication therapy problems (MTPs) involving cognition. Within a larger ongoing clinical trial, this paper describes cognition-related MTPs and pharmacist recommendations among older adults with 3Ds followed by a home-based care team. We conducted a retrospective analysis of medication data among Medicare Advantage members aged ≥ 65 years living at home in Connecticut with International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision codes related to 3Ds; analyses include the first 105 subjects randomized to the home-based care team from March 2017 to January 2019. Advanced practice registered nurses conducted in-home medication reconciliations along with medical and cognitive assessments. Clinical pharmacists then conducted medication reviews centered on agents treating or exacerbating 3Ds. After review by the study advanced practice registered nurse, geriatrician, and psychiatrist, salient recommendations were forwarded to primary care providers for consideration. Medication therapy problems related to cognition were retrospectively abstracted and classified as: (1) indication: underuse or overuse; (2) effectiveness: ineffective agent or low dose (mainly for antidepressants); and (3) safety: undesirable effect (e.g., impaired cognition, dementia treatment side effects), unsafe medication (e.g., potentially inappropriate medications that can harm cognition), drug interaction, or high dose. Pharmacists identified 166 cognitive MTPs, with a mean (standard deviation) of 1.58 (1.35) [range 0–6] MTPs per subject. Indication MTPs represented 34% of total MTPs, of which 79% involved underuse and 21% overuse; effectiveness represented 13% of total MTPs; and safety represented over half (52%) of all MTPs, with benzodiazepines and anticholinergics frequently implicated. Recommendations commonly included medication reduction (discontinuation 23% and dose reduction 19%). We found MTPs involving cognition among most (79%) patients. Our study findings support the role of pharmacists on multidisciplinary teams to identify cognitively harmful medications, dementia treatment side effects, and untreated cognitive conditions. Previous research has claimed that diversity erodes trust, even though the empirical evidence is mixed and restricted to ethnic neighborhood diversity. Against the backdrop of increasing diversity within the political sphere and concurrently declining political trust, we examined the impact of social diversity on trust in groups of political representatives. In two experiments (N1 = 109, N2 = 248) we tested how the diversity of political parties affected citizens’ trust in them. In line with predictions of the stereotype content model, diverse parties were perceived as warmer and less competent than non‐diverse parties (Experiments 1–2). Additionally, party diversity was perceived as having more benefits, but also involving more threats (Experiment 2). Consequently, diversity had both positive (via warmth and benefits) and negative (via competence and threats) indirect effects on trust. These results help to untangle previously mixed, for the most part non‐experimental, findings of the relationship between diversity and trust.

Which different feelings and reactions do different family members show if an adult family member who has long been perceived as heterosexual discloses their sexual identity as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB)? Previous studies have investigated reactions of spouses and sometimes children in the United States. This article describes the findings of qualitative interviews and a German-language quantitative survey (N = 188) in which family members were asked about their emotions, experiences during the coming out process, and their use of support options. The samples were recruited via different LGB+ online forums and organizations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (age M = 44.08). The results demonstrate that a coming out after years of a heterosexual biography and family life affects adults’ parents and siblings in addition to spouses and children. Siblings were perceived as a supportive group of family members showing calm and mostly positive reactions. Parents mainly reported surprise but also showed on the one hand interest in supporting their children in the coming out process; on the other hand, we find also evidence for negative reactions including rejecting behavior. Children’s coping and well-being depended on the time that had passed since the coming out and their age at the time of the coming out. Spouses felt shocked, angry, and the ground was pulled from under their feet. Comparing the perspectives of these groups of family members, differences between them, and their specific needs are discussed. Practical implications are derived from the support options mentioned, and range from information from books, the internet to professional advice. Spouses report the need of diverse support options, whereas other family members ask friends and other family members for support. Forums, counseling and the possibility to exchange were perceived as a support but were more accessible for women than for men. They provide the chance for a communicative exchange before the stress becomes too strong.

We describe 2 cases: patient A, a 62-year-old woman who initially refused screening for potential COVID-19, bringing up questions about threshold for capacity when public health is at risk and questions about whether screening for infection should be different in older adults. The other case, patient B, is that of an 83-year-old man who was on the unit when patient A tested positive, and brought up concerns for risk of dissemination in the context of wandering, spitting behaviors and inability to adhere to room isolation or masking measures. We review measures taken to decrease risk of transmission and improve screening for infection in older adults.

Objective: This study sought to conduct a comprehensive search for genetic risk of cognitive decline in the context of geriatric depression. Design: A genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis in the Neurocognitive Outcomes of Depression in the Elderly (NCODE) study. Setting: Longitudinal, naturalistic follow-up study. Participants: Older depressed adults, both outpatients and inpatients, receiving care at an academic medical center. Measurements: The Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) neuropsychological battery was administered to the study participants at baseline and a minimum of twice within a subsequent 3-year period in order to measure cognitive decline. A GWAS analysis was conducted to identify genetic variation that is associated with baseline and change in the CERAD Total Score (CERAD-TS) in NCODE. Results: The GWAS of baseline CERAD-TS revealed a significant association with an intergenic single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on chromosome 6, rs17662598, that surpassed adjustment for multiple testing (p = 3.7 × 10−7; false discovery rate q = 0.0371). For each additional G allele, average baseline CERAD-TS decreased by 8.656 points. The most significant SNP that lies within a gene was rs11666579 in SLC27A1 (p = 1.1 × 10−5). Each additional copy of the G allele was associated with an average decrease of baseline CERAD-TS of 4.829 points. SLC27A1 is involved with processing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an endogenous neuroprotective compound in the brain. Decreased levels of DHA have been associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The most significant SNP associated with CERAD-TS decline over time was rs73240021 in GRXCR1 (p = 1.1 × 10−6), a gene previously linked with deafness. However, none of the associations within genes survived adjustment for multiple testing. Conclusions: Our GWAS of cognitive function and decline among individuals with late-life depression (LLD) has identified promising candidate genes that, upon replication in other cohorts of LLD, may be potential biomarkers for cognitive decline and suggests DHA supplementation as a possible therapy of interest.

Research has shown that vicarious contact can help to reduce prejudice. We tested the effect of a controlled, video-based vicarious-contact intervention on straight men’s (implicit and explicit) attitudes toward gay men. Findings of Experiment 1 ( n = 99 German participants) failed to show direct effects but were in line with the idea that negative (situation-specific) emotions mediate the intervention effect. Experiment 2 ( n = 108 U.S. participants) expanded findings: straight men with antigay preattitudes reported less negative intergroup emotions toward gay men after watching the vicarious-contact video (compared to the control condition); and less negative intergroup emotions were related to more positive attitudes toward gay men. For straight men with positive preattitudes, findings were in line with the hypothesis that positive intergroup emotions toward gay men were the relevant mediator. We discuss the moderating role of preattitudes to explain processes underlying vicarious-contact effects.

This meta-analysis evaluated theoretical predictions from balanced identity theory (BIT) and evaluated the validity of zero points of Implicit Association Test (IAT) and self-report measures used to test these predictions. Twenty-one researchers contributed individual subject data from 36 experiments (total N = 12,773) that used both explicit and implicit measures of the social–cognitive constructs. The meta-analysis confirmed predictions of BIT’s balance–congruity principle and simultaneously validated interpretation of the IAT’s zero point as indicating absence of preference between two attitude objects. Statistical power afforded by the sample size enabled the first confirmations of balance–congruity predictions with self-report measures. Beyond these empirical results, the meta-analysis introduced a within-study statistical test of the balance–congruity principle, finding that it had greater efficiency than the previous best method. The meta-analysis’s full data set has been publicly archived to enable further studies of interrelations among attitudes, stereotypes, and identities.

Attitude-change research requires sound attitude measures adequately predicting behavior. Most existing attitude measures focus on the cognitive (and some on the affective) attitude component (while neglecting the behavioral component). The present research introduces the SABA, a brief scale that consists of Scenarios measuring the Affective and Behavioral components of Attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. In two studies with student and non-student samples (n1 = 66, n2 = 202), we developed a 25-item scale and reduced it by performing exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis yielded two factors (affective and behavioral) for each version (SABA-L for attitudes toward lesbians, SABA-G for attitudes toward gay men). The reduced scales each contained five scenarios showing good reliability. High convergent validity and discriminant validity were shown using explicit and implicit attitude measures in a multitrait–multimethod analysis. Further, SABA scores correlated with the Modern Homonegativity Scale (MHS) and the Attitudes Toward Lesbians (ATL) and Gay Men Scale (ATG), but—as predicted—not with social anxiety and the Homopositivity Scale. The SABA’s criterion and incremental validity were demonstrated in predicting attitude-related behavior better than the MHS. SABA scores showed established associations and differences in antigay attitudes based on age, religiousness, male role norms, authoritarianism, openness (SABA-G only), and sexual orientation, confirming (known-group) validity. Further, the SABA correlated less with the motivation to act without prejudice than the MHS, the ATL, and the ATG. Thus, outperforming existing attitude scales, the SABA appears to be a psychometrically sound instrument to measure attitudes toward lesbians and gay men.
