We measure the surface mass density of the galactic disk in the solar neighbourhood using two samples of red clump stars, we also determine the thin and thick disk chemical properties. High resolution spectral data of red clump stars towards the NGP have been obtained with the spectrograph Elodie at OHP for Tycho-2 selected stars. Nearby Hipparcos red clump stars were also observed with the Elodie spectrograph.

We derive accurate, homogeneous atmospheric parameters (Teff , log g, Vt, [Fe/H]) for 74 FGK non-variable supergiants and for 30 classical cepheids in 302 pulsation phases based on the highresolution, high signal-to-noise echelle spectra. The extremely high precision of the effective temperature determination (10-30 K) is achieved by using the line- depth ratio method. These parameters are correlated with unreddened B-V colour index compiled from the literature for investigated stars to obtain an empirical relationship of the form (B-V )0 = 57.984 - 10.3587(logTeff )2 + +1.67572(logTeff )3 - 3.356logg + 0.0321Vt+ +0.2615[Fe/H] + 0.8833(logg)(logTeff ) This expression have been used for the estimation of the colour excesses E(B-V) of individual supergiants and classical cepheids with an error 0.05 mag, which matches precision of the most sophisticated photometric techniques. The application range is F0-K0, luminosity classes I and II. Considering the large distances of supergiants, this method opens up a possibility for the large-scale extinction mapping of the Galaxy, with sensitivity down to 0.1-0.2 mag.

Astronomy ,QB1-991 - Abstract
Atmospheric parameters (Teff , log g, [Fe/H], Vt), Li, and volatile (O, Na, Al, Zn) and refractory (Si, Ti, V, Cr, Co and Ni) element abundances in 133 stars belonging to the low part of MS have been determined. Among them about 30 stars are the variable stars of BY Dra type, for which the determination of the chemical composition was made for the first time. The effective temperatures Teff were estimated by the line depth ratio method. The surface gravities log g were determined by two methods (ionization balance of iron and using parallaxes). The abundances of lithium and oxygen were determined by the calculation of synthetic spectrum. The comparison of volatile and refractory element abundances in variable stars and other stars was made. We have found that the behaviour of the abundances of the majority of elements in MS stars and spotted stars does not differ. The Li is detected in 65 BY Dra stars and in 26 of MS stars. The Li abundance in variable stars is higher than in MS dwarfs.

Astronomy ,QB1-991 - Abstract
The spectra of OU Gem were obtained with the fiber-fed echelle spectrograph SOPHIE at the 1.93-m telescope of the Observatoire de Haute- Provence (France). The temperatures of components of the system were defined and are equal to 5013 ± 15 K and 4486±50 K for primary (A) and secondary (B) components, accordingly. The rotation velocity of components are measured: for primary component it is equal to 5.1±1 km/s and 6.2 ± km/s for the secondary one. The definition of radial velocities of components by LSD profile method and redetermination of spectral orbital elements were carried out. New absolute parameters of components were obtained too.

Astronomy ,QB1-991 - Abstract
Abundances of neutron-capture (n- capture) elements in the stars belonging to thin and thick disks are obtained. The separation of thin and thick stars on kinematic criterion was made early. The spectra were obtained with the ELODIE spectrograph at the 1.93-m telescope of the Observatoire de Haute Provence (France). The determination of elemental abundances was carried out in LTE assumption by model atmosphere method, for Ba and Eu taken into account the hyperfine structure. The dependences of n-capture element abundances on metallicity for thin and thick disks are presented.

Aims. In this work we use the Gaia DR3 set of ultracool dwarf candidates and complement the Gaia spectrophotometry with additional photometry in order to characterise its global properties. This includes the inference of the distances, their locus in the Gaia colour-absolute magnitude diagram and the (biased through selection) luminosity function in the faint end of the Main Sequence. We study the overall changes in the Gaia RP spectra as a function of spectral type. We study the UCDs in binary systems, attempt to identify low-mass members of nearby young associations, star forming regions and clusters, and analyse their variability properties. Results. We detect 57 young, kinematically homogeneous groups some of which are identified as well known star forming regions, associations and clusters of different ages. We find that the primary members of 880 binary systems with a UCD belong mainly to the thin and thick disk components of the Milky Way. We identify 1109 variable UCDs using the variability tables in the Gaia archive, 728 of which belong to the star forming regions defined by HMAC. We define two groups of variable UCDs with extreme bright or faint outliers. Conclusions. The set of sources identified as UCDs in the Gaia archive contains a wealth of information that will require focused follow-up studies and observations. It will help to advance our understanding of the nature of the faint end of the Main Sequence and the stellar/substellar transition., Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics. 29 pages, 20 figures plus 3 appendices

B.-- This is an Open Access article, published by EDP Sciences, under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., Context. The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100 000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for the homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper introduces the survey results. Methods. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus, all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202 000 spectra of 115 000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. © G. Gilmore et al. 2022. Conclusions. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022. A companion article reviews the survey implementation, scientific highlights, the open cluster survey, and data products., Based on data products from observations made with ESO Telescopes at the La Silla Paranal Observatory under programme ID 188.B-3002. These data products have been processed by the Cambridge Astronomy Survey Unit (CASU) at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, and by the FLAMES/UVES reduction team at INAF/Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri. Public access to the data products is via the ESO SAF, and the Gaia-ESO Survey Data Archive, prepared and hosted by the Wide Field Astronomy Unit, Institute for Astronomy, University of Edinburgh, which is funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council. We do a morphological, kinematic and chemical analysis of the disrupting cluster UBC 274 (2.5 Gyr, $d=1778$ pc) to study its global properties. We use HDBSCAN to obtain a new membership list up to 50 pc from its centre and up to magnitude $G=19$ using Gaia EDR3 data. We use high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra to obtain atmospheric parameters of 6 giants and subgiants, and individual abundances of 18 chemical species. The cluster has a highly eccentric (0.93) component, tilted $\sim$10 deg with respect to the plane of the Galaxy, which is morphologically compatible with the result of a test-particle simulation of a disrupting cluster. Our abundance analysis shows that the cluster has a subsolar metallicity of [Fe/H]$=-0.08\pm0.02$. Its chemical pattern is compatible with that of Ruprecht 147, of similar age but located closer to the Sun, with the remarkable exception of neutron-capture elements, which present an overabundance of $[n\mathrm{/Fe]}\sim0.1$. The cluster's elongated morphology is associated with the internal part of its tidal tail, following the expected dynamical process of disruption. We find a significant sign of mass segregation where the most massive stars appear 1.5 times more concentrated than other stars. The cluster's overabundance of neutron-capture elements can be related to the metallicity dependence of the neutron-capture yields due to the secondary nature of these elements, predicted by some models. UBC 274 presents a high chemical homogeneity at the level of $0.03$ dex in the sampled region of its tidal tails., Comment: Accepted by A&A

A., Context. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey, the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100 000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. Methods. We made use of the information recorded and archived in the observing blocks; during the observing runs; in a number of relevant documents; in the spectra and master catalogue of spectra; in the parameters delivered by the analysis nodes and the working groups; in the final catalogue; and in the science papers. Based on these sources, we critically analyse and discuss the output and products of the Survey, including science highlights. We also determined the average metallicities of the open clusters observed as science targets and of a sample of clusters whose spectra were retrieved from the ESO archive. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110 000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. Conclusions. The final catalogue will be released through the ESO archive in the first half of 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. In addition to these results, the Gaia-ESO Survey will leave a very important legacy, for several aspects and for many years to come. © ESO 2022., Based on data products from observations made with ESO Telescopes at the La Silla Paranal Observatory under programmes ID 188.B-3002, 193-B-0936, and 197.B-1074. These data products have been processed by the Cambridge Astronomy Survey Unit (CASU) at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, and by the FLAMES/UVES reduction team at INAF-Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri. The number of stars with a measured value of [Fe/H] is considerably increasing thanks to spectroscopic surveys. However different methodologies, inputs and assumptions used in spectral analyses lead to different precisions in [Fe/H] and possibly to systematic differences that need to be evaluated. It is essential to understand the characteristics of each survey to fully exploit their potential, in particular if the surveys are combined. The purpose of this study is to compare [Fe/H] determinations from the largest spectroscopic surveys (APOGEE, GALAH, the Gaia ESO survey, RAVE, LAMOST, SEGUE ) to other catalogues taken as reference. Offsets and dispersions of the residuals are examined as well as their trends with other parameters. We use reference samples providing independent determinations of [Fe/H] which are compared to those from the surveys for common stars. The distribution of the residuals is assessed through simple statistics that measures the offset between two catalogues and the dispersion representative of the precision of both catalogues. When relevant, linear fits are performed. A large sample of FGK-type stars with [Fe/H] based on high-resolution, high signal to noise spectroscopy was built from the PASTEL catalogue to provide a reference sample. We also use FGK members in open and globular clusters to assess the internal consistency of [Fe/H] of each survey. The agreement of median [Fe/H] values for clusters observed by different surveys is discussed. All the surveys overestimate the low metallicities, and some of them also underestimate the high metallicities. They perform well in the most populated intermediate metallicity range, whatever the resolution. In most cases the typical precision that we deduce from the comparisons is in good agreement with the uncertainties quoted in the catalogues. Some exceptions to this general behaviour are discussed., accepted in A&A

The definition and optimisation studies for the Gaia satellite spectrograph, the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS), converged in late 2002 with the adoption of the instrument baseline. This paper reviews the characteristics of the selected configuration and presents its expected performance. The RVS is a 2.0 by 1.6 degree integral field spectrograph, dispersing the light of all sources entering its field of view with a resolving power R=11 500 over the wavelength range [848, 874] nm. The RVS will continuously and repeatedly scan the sky during the 5 years of the Gaia mission. On average, each source will be observed 102 times over this period. The RVS will collect the spectra of about 100-150 million stars up to magnitude V~17-18. At the end of the mission, the RVS will provide radial velocities with precisions of ~2 km/s at V=15 and \~15-20 km/s at V=17, for a solar metallicity G5 dwarf. The RVS will also provide rotational velocities, with precisions (at the end of the mission) for late type stars of sigma_vsini ~5 km/s at V~15 as well as atmospheric parameters up to V~14-15. The individual abundances of elements such as Silicon and Magnesium, vital for the understanding of Galactic evolution, will be obtained up to V~12-13. Finally, the presence of the 862.0 nm Diffuse Interstellar Band (DIB) in the RVS wavelength range will make it possible to derive the three dimensional structure of the interstellar reddening., 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Astrophysics::Galaxy Astrophysics - Abstract
A sample including 2370 stars with (U, V) velocities has been analyzed up to z = 2.5 kpc. It is shown that the observed vertical gradient in the velocity distribution can be explained by the sum of 3 discrete populations with constant kinematics. The observations are well fitted by exponential density laws for the thin disk and the thick disk with scale lengths of 280 pc and 700 pc respectively, and with local densities of 6% and 0.15% for the thick disk and halo respectively.

The Gaia mission is designed as a Galaxy explorer, and will measure simultaneously, in a survey mode, the five or six phase space parameters of all stars brighter than 20th magnitude, as well as providing a description of their astrophysical characteristics. These measurements are obtained by combining an astrometric instrument with micro-arcsecond capabilities, a photometric system giving the magnitudes and colours in 15 bands and a medium resolution spectrograph named the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS). The latter instrument will produce spectra in the 848 to 874 nm wavelength range, with a resolving power R = 11 500, from which radial velocities, rotational velocities, atmospheric parameters and abundances can be derived. A companion paper (Katz et al. 2004) presents the characteristics of the RVS and its performance. This paper details the outstanding scientific impact of this important part of the Gaia satellite on some key open questions in present day astrophysics. The unbiased and simultaneous acquisition of multi-epoch radial velocities and individual abundances of key elements in parallel with the astrometric parameters is essential for the determination of the dynamical state and formation history of our Galaxy. Moreover, for stars brighter than V=15, the resolving power of the RVS will give information about most of the effects which influence the position of a star in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, placing unprecedented constraints on the age, internal structure and evolution of stars of all types. Finally, the RVS multi-epoch observations are ideally suited to the identification, classification and characterisation of the many types of double, multiple and variable stars., 33 pages, 11 figures, in press at MNRAS.

Currently accepted ideas concerning the structure and evolution of stellar populations in our Galaxy are mainly based on detailed observations of stars in the close solar neighbourhood. Faint star counts have long been advocated only to get an overview of the large scale features (Van Rhijn 1965). Apart from the pioneering work of the Basel Halo-Disc program (Becker 1965), only recently have the modern digitization and processing facilities opened the way to getting medium accuracy photometry for complete faint star probes in large selected fields (Chiu 1980; Sandage 1987; Gilmore & Wyse 1985; Mohan & Creze 1987), thus giving access to the properties of star samples out of the solar neighbourhood. In some cases (Chiu 1980; Spaenhauer 1989; Reid 1990) the measurements include both photometry and proper motions.

- Abstract
The aim of our stellar population study is to investigate the kinematical and chemical characteristics of the thin disk, thick disk and halo of the Galaxy. We have selected 51 stars in 2 astrometric and photometric surveys at l = 42°, b = +79° (Soubiran 1992) and l = 167°, b = +47° (Ojha et al. 1994), on the basis of the Reduced Proper Motion Diagram. They were observed with the 193cm telescope at Observatoire de Haute-Provence, with the CARELEC spectrograph (dispersion of 66Å/mm, FWHM of 3.0Å, range λλ4600 – 5500Å), together with 43 comparison stars with known fundamental parameters. The derivation of Teff, logg and [Fe/H] was done differentially using a grid of synthetic spectra and the comparison stars, as described in Cayrel et al. (1991). Twenty of the target stars were found to be more deficient than −0.5. In the (V, [Fe/H]) distribution, the halo stars are clearly separated from the other stars with a mean of (V, [Fe/H]) ≃ (−210km/s, – 1.4dex). Because of the small size of the sample, it was not possible to discriminate the thick disk from the thin disk. We have taken 200 more spectra, and with these new observations, we hope to be able to deconvolve the 3 populations in the (U, V, W, [Fe/H]) space as we did previously with the (U, V) velocity (Soubiran 1993).

[Context] Thanks to ongoing efforts to compute accurate stellar ages, we are able to characterise stars in different regions of the Milky Way. The Gaia and Kepler space-missions, along with ground-based spectroscopic surveys such as APOGEE, provide a unique way to study the chemo-kinematics relations as a function of age through the Galactic stellar populations and provide new constraints to Galactic evolution models. [Aims] We investigate the properties of the double sequences of the Milky Way discs visible in the [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] diagram, which are usually associated to the chemical thin and thick discs at the solar circle. In the framework of Galactic formation and evolution, we discuss the complex relationships between age, metallicity, [α/Fe], and the radial, azimuthal, and vertical components of the space velocities. [Methods] We study stars with measured chemical and seismic properties from the APOGEE spectroscopic survey and the Kepler satellite, respectively. In addition, astrometry from the Gaia satellite is available for the majority of the sample. We separate the [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] diagram into three stellar populations: the thin disc, the high-α metal-poor thick disc, and the high-α metal-rich thick disc and characterise each of these in the age-chemo-kinematics parameter space. Because of the model-dependent nature of the ages inferred from asteroseismology, and because they depend on the quality of the input spectroscopic information, we compare results obtained from different APOGEE data releases (DR14 and DR16). We also use age determinations from two recent works in the literature. In addition, we use the Besançon stellar populations synthesis model to highlight selection biases and mechanisms (such as mergers and secular evolution) not included in the model. [Results] The thin disc exhibits a flat age-metallicity relation while [α/Fe] increases with stellar age. We confirm no correlation between radial and vertical velocities with [Fe/H], [α/Fe], and age for each stellar population. Considering both samples, Vφ decreases with age for the thin disc, while Vφ increases with age for the high-α metal-poor thick disc. We show that this difference is not due to sample selection. Although the age distribution of the high-α metal-rich thick disc is very close to that of the high-α metal-poor thick disc between 7 and 14 Gyr, its kinematics seems to follow that of the thin disc. This feature, not predicted by the hypotheses included in the Besançon Galaxy Model, suggests a different origin and history for this population. Finally, we show that there is a maximum dispersion of the vertical velocity, σZ, with age for the high-α metal-poor thick disc around 8 Gyr. The comparisons with the Besançon Galaxy Model simulations suggest a more complex chemo-dynamical scheme to explain this feature, most likely including mergers and radial migration effects., F.F., A.F., R.M., M.R., T.A. acknowledge support by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and University (MICIU/FEDER, UE) through grant RTI2018-095076-B-C21, the Institute of Cosmos Sciences University of Barcelona (ICCUB, Unidad de Excelencia “María de Maeztu”) through grant CEX2019-000918-M, the Ramon y Cajal Fellowship RYC2018-025968-I. - Abstract
The evolution of the Milky Way disk, which contains most of the stars in the Galaxy, is affected by several phenomena. For example, the bar and the spiral arms of the Milky Way induce radial migration of stars
1 and can trap or scatter stars close to orbital resonances2 . External perturbations from satellite galaxies can also have a role, causing dynamical heating of the Galaxy3 , ring-like structures in the disk4 and correlations between different components of the stellar velocity5 . These perturbations can also cause 'phase wrapping' signatures in the disk6-9 , such as arched velocity structures in the motions of stars in the Galactic plane. Some manifestations of these dynamical processes have already been detected, including kinematic substructure in samples of nearby stars10-12 , density asymmetries and velocities across the Galactic disk that differ from the axisymmetric and equilibrium expectations13 , especially in the vertical direction11,14-16 , and signatures of incomplete phase mixing in the disk7,12,17,18 . Here we report an analysis of the motions of six million stars in the Milky Way disk. We show that the phase-space distribution contains different substructures with various morphologies, such as snail shells and ridges, when spatial and velocity coordinates are combined. We infer that the disk must have been perturbed between 300 million and 900 million years ago, consistent with estimates of the previous pericentric passage of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. Our findings show that the Galactic disk is dynamically young and that modelling it as time-independent and axisymmetric is incorrect.- Published

- Abstract
Background: During spaceflight, changes in the cardiovascular system and in pulmonary mechanics take place but no apparent impairment of respiratory function occurs. However, little is known about the first hours in microgravity., Hypothesis: The changes occurring at the same time in the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems could interact and lead to a transient impairment of blood gases at the onset of microgravity., Methods: Cardiovascular and respiratory changes were studied during 6 degrees head-down tilt (HDT), a now well-known method for simulation of microgravity. After a baseline standing position, 10 men were exposed to 4 h of 6 degrees HDT. Hemodynamic parameters were measured by thoracic electrical bioimpedance. Ventilatory parameters were studied by spirographic measurements and mass spectrometer analysis of expired gases. Arterial blood parameters were analyzed by specific electrodes., Results: Immediately after tilting, stroke volume and cardiac output increased, as measured by thoracic bio-impedance, while heart rate and thoracic fluid index decreased. Blood gas analysis showed hypercapnia, acidosis and a tendency to hypoxia. These changes were related to hypoventilation shown by the decrease in minute ventilation. After usually less than 30 min, all the parameters reached a steady state. Return to the standing position provoked reverse variations with orthostatic intolerance in 4 subjects., Conclusion: Marked changes in both the cardiovascular and respiratory systems occur within the first minutes of HDT (i.e., transition to simulated microgravity).
