1. Improving Health Outcomes Through Treatment Sequencing Optimization in Multiple Myeloma: A Simulation Model in Transplant‐Ineligible Patients

Abstract: ABSTRACT Objectives Patients with multiple myeloma often require multiple treatment lines. The order in which treatments are sequenced has impact on clinical outcomes. This study aimed to estimate progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) with common treatment sequences used in Portugal and the incremental benefit of an optimal sequence in transplant‐ineligible patients with multiple myeloma. Methods A state‐transition sequential model with a five‐health state conceptual structure was developed to simulate and compare survival outcomes between treatment sequences up to four lines of treatments. Data sources included randomized clinical trials and indirect treatment comparisons. A panel of Portuguese hematologists listed four most common treatment sequences and optimal sequence of choice in transplant‐ineligible patients. Results Our simulation estimated an OS between 6.1 and 7.8 years using the most common sequences, with VMP + DRd + Pd + Kd as the most effective (7.8 years). Optimal sequence of choice (DRd + PVd + Kd + Vd) achieved OS of 9.8 years and may extend OS in 2.0–3.7 years vs. most common sequences (26%–61% increase). This benefit was mostly explained by extended PFS in the first line of treatment. Conclusion Model results demonstrate that choosing the most effective treatment upfront is crucial in delaying disease progression thus yielding better survival outcomes in transplant‐ineligible patients. There was a clear survival benefit in using daratumumab‐based regimens in first line. This modelling exercise highlights the need to raise awareness around the impact of sequencing strategies to improve patient's outcomes.

2. Dual diagnosis of bipolar disorder and substance use disorder – type of substance used and its impact on treatment adherence and maintenance of abstinence

Abstract: Introduction Substance use disorder is a common comorbidity with bipolar disorder, delaying its diagnosis and making treatment of both disorders more complex and challenging. Objectives We aim to analyze the types of substances used by patients with bipolar disorder and to find if there’s a relationship between the substance used both with treatment adherence and maintenance of abstinence. Methods We collected, retrospectively, data from the hospital platform and analyzed it on SPSS Statistics 26, along with a literature review. Our study looks over 3 years, and all patients analyzed have a dual diagnosis of both bipolar disorder and substance use disorder and were hospitalized in the psychiatric ward of a tertiary university hospital. Results There were 2384 hospitalizations in the Coimbra’s University Hospital psychiatric ward, and 88 hospitalizations were coded with a dual diagnosis of bipolar disorder and substance use disorder. Tobacco was the substance more consumed by the patients (53.4%), followed by alcohol (46.6%) and cannabinoids (30.7%). In 18.2% of the patients was identified consumption of cocaine and in 6.8% there was an abuse of opioids. It is important to highlight that 20.5% of the patients used 2 or more substances at the same time. Regarding adherence to treatment for both their bipolar disorder and substance use disorder, in 25% of the patients, there wasn’t a satisfactory compliance with the treatment prescribed. In the group of patients with polydrug use, half of them didn’t comply with the treatment. In the patients consuming only one substance, we found out that 30% of patients who use alcohol didn’t adhere to the treatment, while around 13% of the patients using cannabinoids didn’t comply with the suggested treatment. 3. Relevance of sociodemographic characteristics on patients with bipolar disorder and substance use disorder

Abstract: Introduction Substance use disorder is a common comorbidity with bipolar disorder, having implications on its diagnosis, treatment adherence, and number of hospitalizations. Understanding the particular characteristics of this population is of the utmost importance to improve clinical outcomes. Objectives Our aim is to analyze the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients in the inpatient unit of a tertiary hospital and to reflect on its impact on treatment. Our study looks over a 3-year period, and all patients analyzed have a dual diagnosis of both bipolar disorder and substance use disorder. Methods We collected, retrospectively, data from the hospital platform and analyzed it on SPSS Statistics 26, along with a literature review. Results In the analyzed period of 3 years, there were 2384 hospitalizations in the Coimbra’s University Hospital psychiatric ward, and 88 hospitalizations were coded with a dual diagnosis of bipolar disorder and substance use disorder. Regarding gender distribution, 41% of the patients were female and 49% of the patients were male, with a mean age of 47 years. There were 12 patients who were re-hospitalized once (7 of them were men) and 6 who were re-hospitalized twice (4 of them were men) during the analyzed period. At the time of hospitalization, 60.5% of male patients were single, 21.1% were divorced, and only 15.8% were married, while female patients were mainly married (35.7%) and only 28.6% were single. Female patients had more frequent support from social and community institutions (17.9% vs 5.3% in men) while 2.6% of men had no support from family or institutions. Regarding education, more men accomplished high school education (21.1% vs 17.9% in women) and university education (18.4% vs 14.3%). In our sample, there were 3.6% of women who were illiterate. During their lifetime, female patients were hospitalized around 5 times and men around 3.7 times, despite the fact that the mean age of female patients on their first hospitalization was 36 years, and in male patients, it was 34 years. Treatment adherence is more significant in female patients (70.3% vs 69.2% in men), even though women maintain active substance abuse more frequently (42.9 vs 39.5%). Conclusions Male and female patients have different backgrounds and different support either in spouses, family, or social institutions. These nuances may play an important role in the number of re-hospitalizations, treatment adherence, and maintenance of abstinence. 4. A data-driven reduced-order model for rotor optimization

Abstract: For rotor design applications, such as wind turbine rotors or urban air mobility (UAM) rotorcraft and flying-car design, there is a significant challenge in quickly and accurately modeling rotors operating in complex, turbulent flow fields. One potential path for deriving reasonably accurate but low-cost rotor performance predictions is available through the application of data-driven surrogate modeling. In this study, an initial investigation is undertaken to apply a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD)-based reduced-order model (ROM) for predicting rotor distributed loads. The POD ROM was derived based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results and utilized to produce distributed-pressure predictions on rotor blades subjected to topology change due to variations in the twist and taper ratio. Rotor twist, θ, was varied between 0, 10, 20, and 30∘, while the taper ratio, λ, was varied as 1.0, 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7. For a demonstration of the approach, all rotors consisted of a single blade. The POD ROM was validated for three operation cases: a high-pitch or a high-thrust rotor in hover, a low-pitch or a low-thrust rotor in hover, and a rotor in forward flight at a low speed resembling wind turbine operation with wind shear. Results showed that reasonably accurate distributed-load predictions could be achieved and the resulting surrogate model can predict loads at a minimal computational cost. The computational cost for the hovering blade surface pressure prediction was reduced from 12 h on 440 cores required for CFD to a fraction of a second on a single core required for POD. For rotors in forward flight, cost was reduced from 20 h on 440 cores to less than a second on a single core. The POD ROM was used to carry out a design optimization of the rotor such that the figure of merit was maximized for hovering-rotor cases and the lift-to-drag effective ratio was maximized in forward flight.

Abstract: Background: Methods for modulating the cerebellum with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are well established, and preliminary data from our group and others has shown evidence of transient improvements in balance after cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in progressive suprancuclear palsy (PSP). This study examines extensive posturography measures before and after 10 sessions of cerebellar rTMS and sham TMS in PSP. Methods: Thirty subjects with PSP and postural instability will undergo cerebellar active and sham rTMS in a single-blind, crossover design with a randomized order of a 10-day intervention. Primary outcomes will be changes in sway area and medio-lateral range of sway with eyes open while standing on a stationary force-plate, and safety, tolerability, and blindedness. Secondary outcomes will include posturography and gait analysis with body-worn, triaxial inertial sensors, clinical balance scales and questionnaires, and a bedside test of vestibular function. Exploratory outcomes are changes in functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signal over the prefrontal, supplementary motor, and primary motor cortices while standing and walking, and speech samples for future analysis. Discussion: The C-STIM crossover intervention study adds a longer duration of stimulation and extensive posturography measures to more finely measure the improvements in balance and exploratory functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) over the prefronal, supplementary motor, and primary motor cortices during balance assessments before and after 10 sessions of cerebellar rTMS and 10 sessions of sham cerebellar TMS. This project will improve our understanding of the importance of the cerebellum for control of postural stability in PSP.

Abstract: Experiments on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) in 2021 and 2022 have addressed a number of critical issues for ITER and EU DEMO. A major objective of the AUG programme is to shed light on the underlying physics of confinement, stability, and plasma exhaust in order to allow reliable extrapolation of results obtained on present day machines to these reactor-grade devices. Concerning pedestal physics, the mitigation of edge localised modes (ELMs) using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) was found to be consistent with a reduction of the linear peeling-ballooning stability threshold due to the helical deformation of the plasma. Conversely, ELM suppression by RMPs is ascribed to an increased pedestal transport that keeps the plasma away from this boundary. Candidates for this increased transport are locally enhanced turbulence and a locked magnetic island in the pedestal. The enhanced D-alpha (EDA) and quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regimes have been established as promising ELM-free scenarios. Here, the pressure gradient at the foot of the H-mode pedestal is reduced by a quasi-coherent mode, consistent with violation of the high-n ballooning mode stability limit there. This is suggestive that the EDA and QCE regimes have a common underlying physics origin. In the area of transport physics, full radius models for both L- and H-modes have been developed. These models predict energy confinement in AUG better than the commonly used global scaling laws, representing a large step towards the goal of predictive capability. A new momentum transport analysis framework has been developed that provides access to the intrinsic torque in the plasma core. In the field of exhaust, the X-Point Radiator (XPR), a cold and dense plasma region on closed flux surfaces close to the X-point, was described by an analytical model that provides an understanding of its formation as well as its stability, i.e., the conditions under which it transitions into a deleterious MARFE with the potential to result in a disruptive termination. With the XPR close to the divertor target, a new detached divertor concept, the compact radiative divertor, was developed. Here, the exhaust power is radiated before reaching the target, allowing close proximity of the X-point to the target. No limitations by the shallow field line angle due to the large flux expansion were observed, and sufficient compression of neutral density was demonstrated. With respect to the pumping of non-recycling impurities, the divertor enrichment was found to mainly depend on the ionisation energy of the impurity under consideration. In the area of MHD physics, analysis of the hot plasma core motion in sawtooth crashes showed good agreement with nonlinear 2-fluid simulations. This indicates that the fast reconnection observed in these events is adequately described including the pressure gradient and the electron inertia in the parallel Ohm’s law. Concerning disruption physics, a shattered pellet injection system was installed in collaboration with the ITER International Organisation. Thanks to the ability to vary the shard size distribution independently of the injection velocity, as well as its impurity admixture, it was possible to tailor the current quench rate, which is an important requirement for future large devices such as ITER. Progress was also made modelling the force reduction of VDEs induced by massive gas injection on AUG. The H-mode density limit was characterised in terms of safe operational space with a newly developed active feedback control method that allowed the stability boundary to be probed several times within a single discharge without inducing a disruptive termination. Regarding integrated operation scenarios, the role of density peaking in the confinement of the ITER baseline scenario (high plasma current) was clarified. The usual energy confinement scaling ITER98( p,y ) does not capture this effect, but the more recent H20 scaling does, highlighting again the importance of developing adequate physics based models. Advanced tokamak scenarios, aiming at large non-inductive current fraction due to non-standard profiles of the safety factor in combination with high normalised plasma pressure were studied with a focus on their access conditions. A method to guide the approach of the targeted safety factor profiles was developed, and the conditions for achieving good confinement were clarified. Based on this, two types of advanced scenarios (‘hybrid’ and ‘elevated’ q -profile) were established on AUG and characterised concerning their plasma performance.

Abstract: Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract: In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract: In order to extend the enhanced D-Alpha H-mode to future devices, it is crucial to understand the properties of the main signature of this regime, the quasicoherent mode (QCM), that likely clamps the pressure gradient below the ideal magnetohydrodynamic limit. The turbulent character of the QCM is investigated with scanning probes in ASDEX Upgrade. Analysis reveals the multi-faced character of the mode that spans both the confined region (where the radial electric field is negative) and the near scrape-off layer (SOL) (where it is positive). Fluctuations of density and potential at the QCM frequency are more anti-correlated towards the confined region, which is a fingerprint of electromagnetic instabilities, while they become more correlated in the SOL, as expected for a drift-wave, inducing cross-field transport across the separatrix.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for 10–1000 GeV neutrinos from 2268 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over 8 yr of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of giga electronvolts are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free-streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p -value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p -value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at tera electronvolt to peta electronvolt energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Abstract Machine learning techniques are now well established in experimental particle physics, allowing detector data to be analyzed in new and unique ways. The identification of signals in particle observatories is an essential data processing task that can potentially be improved using such methods. This paper aims at exploring the benefits that a dedicated machine learning approach might provide to the classification of signals in dual-phase noble gas time projection chambers. A full methodology is presented, from exploratory data analysis using Gaussian mixture models and feature importance ranking to the construction of dedicated predictive models based on standard implementations of neural networks and random forests, validated using unlabeled simulated data from the LZ experiment as a proxy to real data. The global classification accuracy of the predictive models developed in this work is estimated to be >99.0%, which is an improvement over conventional algorithms tested with similar data. The results from the clustering analysis were also used to identify anomalies in the data caused by miscalculated signal properties, showing that this methodology can also be used for data monitoring.

13. The roles of solidification cooling rate and (Mn,Cr) alloying elements in the modification of β-AlFeSi and hardness evolvements in near-eutectic Al-Si alloys

Abstract: High recycling rates worldwide underline the economic and environmental value of aluminum scrap. However, several alloying elements in recycled Al negatively affect the final properties of castings, among which Fe has the most permissive effect on the mechanical properties. The extremely restricted solid solubility of Fe in Al leads to the formation of brittle Fe-containing intermetallic compounds (IMCs), and a possible strategy is to use modifiers of harmful IMCs by alloying. The present work aims to investigate the substitutional characteristic of Fe, Mn, Cr in the α-IMC taking the Al-12 %Si alloy as a reference, i.e., by analyzing the directional solidification (DS) of binary (Al-12 %Si), ternary (Al-12 %Si-1 %Fe) and quaternary (Al-12 %Si-1 %Fe-1 %Mn and Al-12 %Si-1 %Fe-0.6 %Cr) alloys. For all DS alloys castings, the macrostructure is shown to be characterized by columnar grains associated with solidification cooling rates (Ṫ) from 0.4 to 42.3 °C/s. The microstructure of the four alloys examined is shown to be typified by an α-Al dendritic matrix with interdendritic regions formed by α-Al, Si and different IMCs, which have been characterized and associated with the local Ṫ. The evolvement of iron-containing IMCs morphologies according to the addition of alloying elements in Al-Si alloys, is as follows: plate-like for Fe, plate-like and Chinese script for Mn, and fishbone and trefoil/blocky for Cr. Experimental power laws equations are determined relating the primary (λ1), secondary (λ2) and tertiary dendritic arm spacings (λ3) to Ṫ, for any experimentally examined DS alloy casting. The microhardness (HV) of the alloys is correlated with λ3 and Hall-Petch type equations are derived relating HV to both λ3 and Ṫ. The Al-12 %Si-1 %Fe-0.6 %Cr alloy achieved the highest HV among all the alloys examined.

14. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder and Death by Suicide

Abstract: Introduction The risk of suicide may be elevated in the presence of personality pathology. Adults with Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) may be vulnerable to depression and suicidal thoughts. Objectives To identify factors associated with suicide in cases of OCPD. Methods Psychological autopsy procedures were used to gather detailed information about adults who died by suicide and natural causes. A total of 75 deceased adults were evaluated using psychological autopsy procedures. Family members were interviewed about a recently deceased adult, using structured diagnostic interviews (SCID and SIDP-IV). Diagnostic summaries, coroner’s reports and police records were reviewed by a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social worker, and a neuroscientist until agreement was reached about final diagnosis. The final sample included 40 adults who met criteria for OCPD (18 had died by suicide; 20 had died by natural causes). An additional 40 cases were examined in which evidence of PD was absent (19 had died by suicide; 18 had died by natural causes). Results The diagnosis of a Major Depressive Disorder was significantly more common in suicide completers with OCPD compared to suicide completers without OCPD ( X2 = 6.74, p < .01) or cases of natural death with OCPD ( X2 = 12.70, p < .001). Suicide completers with OCPD displayed many symptoms of depression, more often than suicide completers without OCPD or cases of natural death with OCPD (see Table 1). As compared to the cases of natural death, both groups of suicide completers were more likely to have previously attempted suicide prior to their final act ( X2 = 8.52, p < .05). Table 1. 15. Alcohol related dementia and Brain Imaging

Abstract: Introduction Alcohol is considered a social evil worldwide owing to its vast array of associated problems and complications, which may manifest in medical, legal or social domains. Excessive and prolonged alcohol use may lead to permanent structural and functional damage to the brain. The evidence from neuroimaging, neuropathological reports and autopsy evaluations suggest some degree of brain pathology in individuals diagnosed with an alcohol related disorder. Objectives The aim of this study is to characterize the structural imaging findings on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of our sample and provide an overview of the literature on the subject. Methods Retrospective observational study with inpatients of Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC), who had alcohol use disorder diagnosis associated with dementia or cognition deficit. Patients were admitted from 2017 to 2021 and submitted to neuroimaging: CT and MR. Data was collected in May 2021 at informatic system. Results Among 38 participants, the median age was 64 years; 86,8% were male. 35 realize CT, 34 with alterations: 23 with microvascular lesions, 17 with cortical atrophy, 8 with white matter hypodensities and 7 with subcortical atrophy. From all patients, only 14 realize MR, 13 with alterations, the most common vascular leukoencephalopathy and cortical atrophy. Conclusions Our results support the hypothesis of neuroimaging changes resulting from alcohol consumption. The severity of alcohol dependence also correlates with neuropathophysiological and neuroimaging changes. Volume shrinkage, altered glucose metabolism and perfusion along with evidence of markedly decreased neuron density are commonly reported. The evidence of neuro-circuit disturbances is seen in form of significant loss of white matter (most prominent in the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum and corpus callosum) on functional imaging. Greater cognitive impairment has been associated with multiple and repeated withdrawal due to greater neuronal damage, and can limit the psychotherapeutic intervention, the adherence to pharmacological therapy and abstinence maintenance. The sheer presence of alcohol use disorder should encourage a neuroimaging evaluation. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

17. Obtaining hydrolysate from macauba oil and its application in the production of methyl esters

Abstract: This work aimed to obtain a hydrolyzate rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the hydrolysis of macauba oil for subsequent esterification and obtaining of methyl esters. To determine the conditions that maximize FFA yield in the hydrolysis step, the effects of buffer solution percentage and catalyst concentration (Lipozyme® RM IM) were determined at 55 ºC and 6 h. From the results, it was verified that both variables evaluated in the experimental range had an influence on the reaction and their increase favored the production of FFA. Additional experiments were carried out to assess the influence of reaction time with a progressive increase up to 8 h. Hydrolyzate with ~92 wt % FFA was obtained and its use in the enzymatic esterification step using Novozym® 435 as catalyst resulted in ~95 % FFA conversion. Regarding the reuse of enzymes at each stage, a ~50 % reduction in FFA yield was found and only 98 % FFA conversion.

18. Characterization and modeling of resistive switching phenomena in IGZO devices

Abstract: This study explores the resistive switching phenomena present in 4 µm2 amorphous Indium–Gallium–Zinc Oxide (IGZO) memristors. Despite being extensively reported in the literature, not many studies detail the mechanisms that dominate conduction on the different states of IGZO-based devices. In this article, we demonstrate that resistive switching occurs due to the modulation of the Schottky barrier present at the bottom interface of the device. Furthermore, thermionic field emission and field emission regimes are identified as the dominant conduction mechanisms at the high resistive state of the device, while the bulk-limited ohmic conduction is found at the low resistive state. 19. Neuropsychological performance in alcohol use disorder: a Portuguese study

Abstract: Introduction Alcohol consumption has devastating psychosocial and health consequences, with effects on cognitive functions. Recent studies have highlighted that patients with diagnosis of alcohol dependence syndrome have cognitive deficits in executive function, visuospatial ability, attention, procedural memory, verbal fluency and processing speed. Objectives The aim of this study is to characterize the sociodemographic and clinical patterns of the study sample and the cognitive deterioration severity and type. Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted with patients who had alcohol use disorder diagnosis at Dual Pathology Outpatient and Inpatient Unity, Psychiatry Department, at Coimbra Hospital and University Center, Portugal. Patients were admitted from 1/1/2016 and 30/09/2021, and submitted at neuropsychological structured evaluation. From the initial sample, major neurocognitive disorder, intellectual development disorder, cerebrovascular accident, traumatic brain injury and neurosurgery were excluded. Results The results show significant cognitive impairment in executive function, memory, verbal fluency and visuospatial ability. Conclusions Our results support the hypothesis of widespread impairment resulting from alcohol consumption. Cognitive impairment can limit the psychotherapeutic intervention, the adherence to pharmacological therapy and abstinence maintenance. The sheer presence of alcohol use disorder should encourage a neuropsychological evaluation. Further studies are needed in this area to prevent and outline an early intervention. 20. Study of the operational conditions for ethyl esters production using residual frying oil and KF/clay catalyst in a continuous system

Abstract: The transesterification of residual frying oil (RFO) with pressurized ethanol was carried out in a continuous reactor containing KF/clay as a heterogeneous catalyst. In the experiments, different oil:ethanol mass ratios were evaluated at 275 and 300 ºC and 20 MPa. In the sequence, the operational stability of the catalyst was evaluated for 8 hours, as well as the conduct of the reaction in two steps (testing new and recycled catalyst). An esters yield of ~90% was achieve at 275 ºC, for15 min and at 1:1.5 oil:ethanol mass ratio. Under these conditions, the catalyst provided a stable yield in the first 3 hours of operation, and a total decrease of 29% after 8 hours. This result can be attributed mainly to the leaching of the K+ cations for the reactions in which the catalyst was exposed to long operating times. The two-step reaction served to increase the RFO conversion to esters, with low thermal decomposition.

21. Demand response performance and uncertainty: A systematic literature review

Abstract: The present review has been carried out, resorting to the PRISMA methodology, analyzing 218 published articles. A comprehensive analysis has been conducted regarding the consumer's role in the energy market. Moreover, the methods used to address demand response uncertainty and the strategies used to enhance performance and motivate participation have been reviewed. The authors find that participants will be willing to change their consumption pattern and behavior given that they have a complete awareness of the market environment, seeking the optimal decision. The authors also find that a contextual solution, giving the right signals according to the different behaviors and to the different types of participants in the DR event, can improve the performance of consumers' participation, providing a reliable response. DR is a mean of demand-side management, so both these concepts are addressed in the present paper. Finally, the pathways for future research are discussed.

Abstract: The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract: Abstract LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $${1.4 \times 10^{-48}}\, {\hbox {cm}}^{2}$$ 1.4 × 10 - 48 cm 2 for a WIMP mass of $${40}\, \hbox {GeV}/{\hbox {c}}^{2}$$ 40 GeV / c 2 and a $${1000}\, \hbox {days}$$ 1000 days exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large $${5.6}\, \hbox {t}$$ 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented.

Abstract: Background. Resistance to an insecticide is what determines its effectiveness and the lack of information limits effectiveness in the control of the boll weevil in cotton crops. Objective. The objective of the study was to determine the susceptibility of the boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) to malathion in the Laguna, Mexico. Currently, this pest is considered as the one with the highest economical impact on cotton cultivation in the region. Methodology. Three bioassays were carried out, one in the state of Coahuila in the 2017 agricultural season and in the 2018 and 2019 seasons in the states of Coahuila and Durango. Boll weevils reared in the laboratory, as well as those collected in the field were used to obtain DL50 and DL95. The mortality data was analyzed using the Probit analysis. Results. The mean lethal dose after 48 hours in the three agricultural cycles fluctuated between 0.19 and 0.39 µg/µl for adults raised in the laboratory and the data observed for adults collected in the field was between 0.37 and 0.44 µg/µl. Implications. Periodic bioassays are suggested to detect populations resistant to malathion. Conclusion. It was determined that the boll weevil populations in the Laguna Region were susceptible to malathion, since the mean lethal dosage for the 3 agricultural seasons was < 1 µg/µl.

Abstract: The recent deuterium–tritium campaign in JET-ILW (DTE2) has provided a unique opportunity to study the isotope dependence of the L-H power threshold in an ITER-like wall environment (Be wall and W divertor). Here we present results from dedicated L-H transition experiments at JET-ILW, documenting the power threshold in tritium and deuterium–tritium plasmas, comparing them with the matching deuterium and hydrogen datasets. From earlier experiments in JET-ILW it is known that as plasma isotopic composition changes from deuterium, through varying deuterium/hydrogen concentrations, to pure hydrogen, the value of the line averaged density at which the threshold is minimum, ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ , increases, leading us to expect that ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (T) < ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (DT) < ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (D) < ${\bar n_{{\text{e}},{\text{min}}}}$ (H). The new power threshold data confirms these expectations in most cases, with the corresponding ordering of the minimum power thresholds. We present a comparison of this data to power threshold scalings, used for extrapolation to future devices such as ITER and DEMO.

Abstract: This work aims to remove the oil from passion fruit seeds using ethanol as solvent and then to carry out the transesterification of the product from the extraction step (oil + ethanol). The effects of operational variables in the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) were evaluated and traditional extraction was performed for comparison. The extraction product was directed to the reaction step using an enzymatic catalyst. UAE provided oil yield from 12.32 to 21.76%, and the maximum value (73.7% of the traditional extraction yield) was obtained at 60 °C and 50 min using a solvent-to-seed ratio of 4. Oil removal was favored by increases in the investigated variables. g-tocopherol, δ-tocopherol and a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids were identified in the oils. The oil obtained by UAE presented higher phytosterol contents. From the reaction step, samples were obtained with higher concentrations of ethyl esters, in addition to emulsifiers (diglycerides and monoglycerides).

28. Factors Influencing the Use of Information and Communication Technologies by Students for Educational Purposes

Abstract: Implementation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in education is defined as the incorporation of ICTs into teaching and learning activities, both inside and outside the classroom. Despite widely studied, there is still no consensus on how it affects student performance. However, before evaluating this, it is crucial to identify which factors impact students' use of ICT for educational purposes. This understanding can help educational institutions to effectively implement ICT, potentially improving student results. Thus, adapting the conceptual framework proposed by Biagi and Loi (2013) and using the 2018 database of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) and a decision tree classification model developed based on CRISP-DM framework, we aim to determine which socio-demographic factors influence students' use of ICT for educational purposes. First, we categorized students according to their use of ICT for educational purposes in two situations: during lessons and outside lessons. Then, we developed a decision tree model to distinguish these categories and find patterns in each group. The model was able to accurately distinguish different levels of ICT adoption and demonstrate that ICT use for entertainment and ICT access at school and at home are among the most influential variables to predict ICT use for educational purposes. Moreover, the model showed that variables related to teaching best practices of Internet utilization at school are not significant predictors of such use. Some results were found to be country-specific, leading to the recommendation that each country adapts the measures to improve ICT use according to its context.

Abstract: Introduction The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is affecting numerous dimensions of our society since the beginning of the outbreak. A significant increase in emotional distress was expected in the general population, particularly among the high-risk groups such as the oldest, chronic patients, healthcare professionals, and psychopathology vulnerable people. There was an urgent need to adapt and create solutions to promote mental health. Given the recommendations to minimize face-to-face interactions, several helplines were widely developed. Objectives In this work, we aim to reflect on the experience of a university helpline, that integrated efforts with the regional mental health care services. Methods A University helpline was created to give support to the regional community outside academia. The team was created on an online teamwork platform, to communicate through the chat, carry videoconference meetings, and store useful files. A Manchester screening decision tree was adopted, to define a set of guidelines to provide support to the callers, based mainly on the guidelines defined by the Order of Portuguese Psychologists. Liaison with the mental health care services, including other specific helplines, was established. Results Notwithstanding all the efforts, the number of received calls was scarce, similarly to helplines created by other national universities and by other entities. Conclusions A new approach to psychological intervention in crisis is needed, maintaining integrated efforts, and taking advantage of the opportunity to foster personalized mental health care in the digital era. It is important to continuously assess the value of integrated efforts in patient care and to the healthcare system.

Abstract: In this study, the production of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) from macauba pulp oil and pressurized ethanol was investigated. The experiments were conducted without the addition of catalyst, at 20 MPa, to determine the effect of temperature (200 to 300 °C) and the oil to ethanol mass ratio (1:1 and 1:2) on the FAEE content and different residence times (10 to 45 min). The effect of the addition of n-hexane to the oil (20 wt%) as a co-solvent was also evaluated. The use of high temperatures (275 and 300 °C) resulted in high FAEE content (∼90%). Increasing the amount of ethanol in the reaction medium contributed to the formation of esters only at operating temperatures of 200 to 250 °C. It was also observed that with the addition of co-solvent (in the oil) it was possible to obtain high amounts of FAEE in a shorter reaction time. In addition, a low content of unreacted compounds (∼8.0%) and the conversion of ∼90 and 99% of the free fatty acids and triglycerides were observed, respectively.

Abstract: The fast and non-invasive detection of odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by gas sensors and electronic noses is a growing field of interest, mostly due to a large scope of potential applications. Additional drivers for the expansion of the field include the development of alternative and sustainable sensing materials. The discovery that isolated cross-linked polymeric structures of suberin spontaneously self-assemble as a film inspired us to develop new sensing composite materials consisting of suberin and a liquid crystal (LC). Due to their stimuli-responsive and optically active nature, liquid crystals are interesting probes in gas sensing. Herein, we report the isolation and the chemical characterization of two suberin types (from cork and from potato peels) resorting to analyses of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The collected data highlighted their compositional and structural differences. Cork suberin showed a higher proportion of longer aliphatic constituents and is more esterified than potato suberin. Accordingly, when casted it formed films with larger surface irregularities and a higher C/O ratio. When either type of suberin was combined with the liquid crystal 5CB, the ensuing hybrid materials showed distinctive morphological and sensing properties towards a set of 12 VOCs (comprising heptane, hexane, chloroform, toluene, dichlormethane, diethylether, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, acetone, ethanol, methanol, and acetic acid). The optical responses generated by the materials are reversible and reproducible, showing stability for 3 weeks. The individual VOC-sensing responses of the two hybrid materials are discussed taking as basis the chemistry of each suberin type. A support vector machines (SVM) algorithm based on the features of the optical responses was implemented to assess the VOC identification ability of the materials, revealing that the two distinct suberin-based sensors complement each other, since they selectively identify distinct VOCs or VOC groups. It is expected that such new environmentally-friendly gas sensing materials derived from natural diversity can be combined in arrays to enlarge selectivity and sensing capacity.

Abstract: Suberin, a plant polyester, consists of polyfunctional long-chain fatty acids and glycerol and is an intriguing candidate as a novel antimicrobial material. We purified suberin from cork using ionic-liquid catalysis during which the glycerol bonds that ensure the polymeric nature of suberin remained intact or were only partially cleaved—yielding the closest to a native configuration reported to date.The chemistry of suberin, both in situ (in cryogenically ground cork) and ex situ (ionic-liquid extracted), was elucidated using high-resolution one- and two-dimensional solution-state NMR analyses. Centrifugation was used to isolate suberin particles of distinct densities and their monomeric composition, assembly, and bactericidal effect, inter alia, were assessed.Analysis of the molecular structure of suberin revealed the relative abundance of linear aliphatic vs. acylglycerol esters, comprising all acylglycerol configurations and the amounts of total carbonyls (CO), free acid end groups (COOH), OH aliphatics, and OH aromatics. Suberin centrifuged fractions revealed generic physiochemical properties and monomeric composition and self-assemble into polygonal structures that display distinct degrees of compactness when lyophilized. Suberin particles—suberinsomes—display bactericidal activity against major human pathogenic bacteria.Fingerprinting the multifunctionality of complex (plant) polyesters such as suberin allows for the identification of novel polymer assemblies with significant value-added properties. Abstract: This work has like purpose monitors the degradation of the drug amoxicillin in the presence and absence of β-cyclodextrin, through techniques spectroscopy. For this, there was accompanied the hydrolysis of the drug protected of the light for around 400 hours. The results indicate that, initially, the cyclodextrin does not alter the hydrolysis of the amoxicillin, however, after 250 hours there is an increase of the hydrolysis of the amoxicillin when present at cyclodextrin. Another variable was the irradiation of the sample with radiation in the region of the UV, we see that the solutions containing β-cyclodextrin suffer a slower phototransformation (26,8%) than the solutions without β-cyclodextrin, when irradiated by UV radiation.

El suelo fue desyerbado y fertilizado con un fertilizante combinado a base de roca fosfatada (40 kg / ha), luego se plantó Centrosema seguido de la plantación de árboles con aplicación de fertilización localizada. En tres meses tuvimos una cobertura del 100% y se controló la maleza. La biomasa promedio de Centrosema en 8 meses fue de 8.12 T / ha, y mientras los diferentes árboles crecían con 55 a 89 por ciento de supervivencia por estrés hídrico, Centrosema recuperó la compactación del suelo hasta 20 cm de profundidad.La biomasa se puede utilizar como forraje para animales pequeños y para enriquecer el suelo. La acumulación media de nitrógeno total en la biomasa fue de 232 kg / ha. El suelo fue desyerbado y fertilizado con un fertilizante combinado a base de roca fosfatada (40 kg / ha), luego se plantó Centrosema seguido de la plantación de árboles con aplicación de fertilización localizada. Abstract: The use of lithium (Li) or tin (Sn) as a liquid metal plasma facing component is proposed as a solution to the high power load issue on the divertor region of nuclear fusion reactors. The possibility to use these materials depends on their compatibility with hydrogen plasmas. With the purpose of realizing deuterium retention studies, specimens of pure Sn (99.999% Sn) and Li–Sn alloy (30 at.% Li) were exposed in the ISTTOK edge plasma. Ex situ analysis of the samples was performed by means of ion beam diagnostics. Nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) technique was applied using the D(3He,p)4He reaction to quantify the fuel retention on the samples.In this work the deuterium retention is compared between pure Sn and Li–Sn alloy samples in both liquid and solid states. All the samples were found to have retention ratios smaller than 0.1 at.%. This low retention ratio is expected for pure tin given its high mass and the instability of tin hydrides. However the retention was unexpectedly low for the case of Li–Sn which was thought to be dominated by the lithium fraction in the alloy. Abstract: Résumé Contexte Chez l’homme, de nombreuses données indiquent maintenant que l’avancée de l’âge du père est associée à une réduction de l’intégrité de l’ADN des spermatozoïdes et aux échecs de développement embryonnaire. D’un autre côté, il est aussi rapporté que les jeunes pères, tels les adolescents, sont porteurs d’un risque accru d’issue défavorable de la grossesse. Ces observations suggèrent que, au moins chez l’humain, il existe une tranche d’âge dans laquelle l’intégrité de l’ADN des spermatozoïdes est optimale. Chez les bovins, on dispose de peu de connaissances sur la qualité de l’ADN des spermatozoïdes des jeunes taureaux et sur son mode d’évolution avec l’âge. La présente étude a pour but de combler ce manque car il peut être important, pour l’industrie bovine, de savoir à quelle période précise un taureau est un reproducteur optimal pour les programmes de reproduction. Matériel et méthodes Quarante taureaux Nellore ont été répartis en trois groupes d’âge: 1, 8 à 2 ans – jeunes taureaux; 3,5 à 7 ans – taureaux adultes; et 8 à 14,3 ans – taureaux âgés. Trois éjaculats ont été collectés par taureau, cryopréservés et évalués pour différents paramètres incluant l’analyse assistée du sperme par ordinateur (CASA), l’intégrité des membranes plasmique et acrosomique, le potentiel mitochondrial, la protamination du noyau, l’altération oxydative de l’ADN et l’évaluation de la structure de la chromatine du noyau du spermatozoïde (SCSA). Résultats Nous rapportons ici que les jeunes taureaux présentent des valeurs supérieures de la mobilité des spermatozoïdes et de l’intégrité des membranes plasmique et acrosomique, ainsi qu’un potentiel mitochondrial élevé. 43. INFLUENCE OF SOWING SPEED ON SOYBEAN CULTIVATION

Abstract: Mato Grosso state is the largest producer of soybeans in the country, therefore is the focus of several studies and research in order to improve and increase the production. For an activity that reduces the movements on the field, the no-tillage is a great activity when it done properly. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of speed of sowing on soybean crop, with pneumatic system type for seed metering. The experiment was conducted at São Luiz Farm, in Sinop city, in the northern of Mato Grosso state. The experimental adopted was the randomized blocks design with four treatments and four replications. The seeding speeds studied were 3; 5; 7 and 9 km h-1. The variables evaluated were: initial plant population, longitudinal distribution and yield components. The data were submitted to variance and regression analysis. The speed of 3 km h-1 show the best performance for acceptable spacing, flawed, plant stand on the pre-established area, number of pods per plant, thousand grain mass and yield. The speeds rate used for sowing did not influence the establishment of soybean crop, but affected the beans productivity.

44. A actividade Física e Desportiva e a Terceira Idade. Estudo Centrado no Concelho de Celorico da Beira

Abstract: É extensa a literatura que evidencia os benefícios que a actividade física promove ao nível da saúde e do bem-estar dos idosos (Sallis, 1998; Spirduso, Francis & MacRae, 2005). Porém, é importante saber até que ponto a actividade física está a ser promovida e entendida no nosso país, nomeadamente em concelhos rurais do interior centro do país. Nesse sentido, a presente investigação pretendeu identificar as representações que a população idosa do concelho de Celorico da Beira tem acerca das actividades físicas, averiguar as suas práticas e conhecer as aspirações a este nível. O estudo centrou-se em 12 idosos, de ambos os sexos, com idades compreendidas entre os 65 e os 90 anos, utentes de seis instituições da terceira idade do concelho, aos quais foram realizadas entrevistas semi-estruturadas (Creswell, 1994; Ruquoy, 2005). A técnica de tratamento da informação utilizada foi a “análise de conteúdo” (Bardin, 2008). A maioria dos inquiridos manifestou um grande interesse pela actividade física, sendo as razões mais apontadas para a sua prática o convívio, o prazer/bem-estar e a saúde. As actividades mais praticadas são as proporcionadas nas instituições, salientando-se os exercícios de mobilização global, os jogos com /sem bola e as caminhadas. No que se refere às actividades físicas que os idosos gostariam de praticar verifica-se que os jogos tradicionais, os percursos pedestres, os exercícios nas máquinas (bicicleta e tapete rolante) e as actividades aquáticas são as mais desejadas.

45. Realistic Simulation and Medical Students' Performance in the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course: A Comparative Study

Abstract: Clinical practice has benefited from new methodologies such as realistic simulation (RS). RS involves recreating lifelike scenarios to more accurately reflect real clinical practice, enhancing learners' skills and decision-making within controlled environments, and experiencing remarkable growth in medical education. However, RS requires substantial financial investments and infrastructure. Hence, it is essential to determine the effectiveness of RS in the development of skills among medical students, which will improve the allocation of resources while optimizing learning. This cross-sectional study was carried out in the simulation laboratory of a medical school, and the performance of students who underwent two different curriculum matrices (without RS and with RS, from 2021 to 2022) in the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course was compared. This test was chosen considering that the competencies involved in cardiac life support are essential, regardless of the medical specialty, and that ACLS is a set of life-saving protocols used worldwide. We observed that the impact of RS can be different for practical abilities when compared with the theoretical ones. There was no correlation between the general academic performance and students' grades reflecting the RS impact. We conclude that RS leads to less remediation and increased competence in practical skills. RS is an important learning strategy that allows repeating, reviewing, and discussing clinical practices without exposing the patient to risks.

46. Tonsillar ulceration as manifestation of disseminated African histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent Portuguese host

Abstract: Histoplasmosis is a systemic mycosis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Rare in Europe but endemic in some regions of Brazil, United States, Africa and Asia. Most of the cases are asymptomatic. Disseminated form is defined by the presence of an extra-pulmonary focus, particularly associated with immunosuppression. We report a case of an unilateral persisted tonsillar ulceration, in an immunocompetent Portuguese host, as manifestation of disseminated African histoplasmosis 45 years later after living 3 years in Africa.

48. Overcoming sheaths overlapping in a small diameter metallic tube with one end closed and using a high density plasma from a high power pulsed hollow cathode discharge

Abstract: High voltage sheaths are formed when plasmas are produced by application of high negative voltage pulses to conductive supports or components, as in Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII) treatments of materials surfaces. For parts with concave shape, as inside metal tubes, these sheaths behave quite differently according to the tube configuration and size, as well as, PIII treatment pressure of operation and pulsing parameters. In this work, an SS304 tube of 1.1 cm internal diameter and 20 cm length was pulsed typically at -0.5 to -2.6 kV, 20 μs pulse length, 500 Hz repetition rate, nitrogen pressure of 5x10-2 mbar and with one side closed configuration. Different currents (between 10 and 30 A) were used to produce plasmas with sheaths that overlapped or not, depending on the currents used. To study these sheath behaviors, a simple plasma diagnostic technique based on a bi-dimensional mapping of the deposition of sputtered materials and by etching via the plasma on a Si wafer target surface, both coming out from the tube, was used. This mapping showed clearly the border line situation between overlapping and non-overlapping sheaths in that small tube which allowed to estimate the plasma density to be around 1011 cm-3 at such a sheath condition, as previously anticipated by Sheridan. Above that border condition, nitrogen PIII was successfully obtained in such a small tube of SS304, producing TiN and Ti2N in samples of Ti6Al4V placed inside the tube, when temperatures higher than 800°C were reached there. Below the border, no significant uptake of nitrogen was possible. Using this type of experimental set-up, it is now possible to explore different hollow cathode behaviors, efficient or high temperature (above 800°C) PIII conditions and also new utilizations of the plasma ejected from the tube.

49. Removal of Methylene Blue Using Cassava Bark Residue

Abstract: Dyes are used in several industrial sectors; the methylene blue, specifically, is often used in manufacture of paper and other materials such as nylons and polyesters. Given this, many researches related to the treatment of these effluents frequently appear. A process widely used in the treatment of industrial wastewater involving dyes is the adsorption. It presents high efficiency and does not require high initial investments. In order to reduce the costs of the adsorption process, biomasses can be used as adsorbent materials. Cassava is a crop of easy adaptation, being cultivated in all states of Brazil. In this research the ability of cassava bark residue (CBR) to remove methylene blue from aqueous solution was evaluated. Its physical characteristics were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and potential zeta analysis. Methylene blue biosorption studies were performed in batch experiments, isothermally at 25 °C. The contact time was determined by the study of kinetics of the process. It was also performed an acid and alkaline treatment to improve methylene blue removal in aqueous solution. Biosorption of methylene blue using CBR with alkaline modification presented 97.99% removal after 24 h. The use of the CBR was confirmed as a good biosorbent for methylene blue removal, and could be considered as a new alternative for the treatment of wastewater, presenting an application for the destination of residue of manioc bark.

50. Influence of the Application of Filter Cake on Soil Chemical Characteristics

Abstract: The agricultural and agroindustrial sector are great waste generator, among them the filter cake, derived from the processing of sugarcane biomass. The inappropriate disposal of this residue can cause large impacts to the environment, however using it as an additional source of nutrients for the soil and consequently for the agricultural crops presents itself as a sustainable alternative. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to analyze the influence of the application of the filter cake, associated or not with mineral fertilization, on the chemical characteristics of the soil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with 4treatments and 4 repetitions: T1 - filter cake (25 ton.ha-1), T2 - filter cake (25 ton.ha-1) plus mineral fertilization(139 kg.ha-1 of formulation 04 %, 30 % and 10 % of NPK), T3 - mineral fertilization (257 kg.ha-1 of formulation 04 %, 30 % and 10 % of NPK) and T4 - control. After 90 days of treatments application the soil chemical characteristics were evaluated: V% (base saturation), CEC (cation exchange capacity), sum of bases, organic matter, carbon, macronutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg, Ca + Mg) and micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn and Na). Data haS been submitted to analysis of variance and the results have been compared by the Scott-Knott test at 5% level of significance. The chemical characteristics of the soil, the parameters that presented significant difference were CEC, sum of bases and Ca + Mg, with emphasis on treatments T2 and T3 for the first two parameters and T1, T2 and T3 for Ca + Mg. In this way, it was observed that the use of the filter cake in the soil, under the conditions of this experiment, presents itself as a sustainable practice. Since the disposal of this residue in soil did not cause negative changes in the evaluated parameters, as the results showed, it can be used as a source of nutrients, reducing the dependence of producers on mineral fertilizers, and consequently a more sustainable agriculture.
