Understanding the impact of scoliosis surgery on lung function is important for counseling patients about risks and benefits of surgery. We prospectively compared the trends in lung function test (LFT) results before and after scoliosis surgery in children with neuromuscular diseases or dysmorphic syndromes. We hypothesized a stabilization.We prospectively included children with neuromuscular or syndromic scoliosis able to perform LFTs. We studied (forced) vital capacity ([F]VC), ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEVWe included 43 patients. No significant change was observed in absolute values of (F)VC, FEVNo stabilization of lung function 3-4 months after scoliosis surgery was observed in children with neuromuscular and syndromic scoliosis with restrictive lung function disease. The effect on the rate of lung function decline remains inconclusive.

Highlights • Exposure to increased Cu concentrations suppressed coral calcification. • Calcification was suppressed further when exposed to Cu under high pCO2. • Respiration decreased after two weeks when stressors were applied in combination. A decrease in ocean pH of 0.3 units will likely double the proportion of dissolved copper (Cu) present as the free metal ion, Cu2+, the most bioavailable form of Cu, and one of the most common marine pollutants. We assess the impact of ocean acidification and Cu, separately and in combination, on calcification, photosynthesis and respiration of sub-colonies of a single tropical Stylophora pistillata colony. After 15 days of treatment, total calcification rates were significantly decreased in corals exposed to high seawater pCO2 (∼1000-μatm, 2100 scenario) and at both ambient (1.6–1.9 nmols) and high (2.5–3.6 nmols) dissolved Cu concentrations compared to controls. The effect was increased when both stressors were combined. Coral respiration rates were significantly reduced by the combined stressors after 2 weeks of exposure, indicating the importance of experiment duration. It is therefore likely rising atmospheric CO2 will exacerbate the negative effects of Cu pollution to S. pistillata.

In this work, a simple and fast method is proposed for the determination of ethanol in homeopathic medicines using thermal infrared enthalpimetry (TIE). Samples containing alcohol in a wide concentration range (from 5% to 95% v/v) were used. Purified water or absolute ethanol was added directly into homeopathic medicine and increase of temperature was monitored using an infrared camera. Total volume, stirring speed and dispensing rate of solutions were the most significant parameters studied for method optimization. A response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimization of the experimental conditions. The method was validated in the following parameters: selectivity, linearity, linear range, precision (repeatability and intermediate precision), limit of detection and quantification, accuracy and robustness. Linear range was obtained from 4% to 55% (ethanol, v/v). The proposed method showed accuracy in agreement with the conventional one. The proposed method it was demonstrated a good alternative for determination of ethanol in homeopathic medicines, presenting low cost, fast analysis and agreement with the principles of green analytical chemistry.

Sentinel-4 is an imaging UVN (UV-VIS-NIR) spectrometer, developed by Airbus Defence and Space as prime contractor under ESA contract in the frame of the joint EU/ESA COPERNICUS program. The mission objective is the operational monitoring of trace gas concentrations for atmospheric chemistry and climate applications. This paper gives an overview of the Sentinel-4 system architecture, its design & development status.

New data about (129)I, (127)I concentrations and their isotopic ratios in aerosol samples from the trace survey station of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, Northern Germany, are presented and discussed in this paper. The investigated samples were collected on a weekly basis during the years 2011 to 2013. Iodine was extracted from aerosol filters using a strong basic solution and was separated from the matrix elements with chloroform and was analysed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) for (129)I and by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for (127)I. The concentrations of (127)I and (129)I in aerosol filters ranged from 0.31 to 3.71 ng m(-3) and from 0.06 to 0.75 fg m(-3), respectively. The results of (129)I/(127)I isotopic ratios were in the order 10(-8) to 10(-7). The (129)I originated directly from gaseous emissions and indirectly from liquid emissions (via sea spray) from the reprocessing plants in Sellafield and La Hague. In comparison with the results of (131)I after the Fukushima accident, no contribution of (129)I from this accident was detectable in Central Europe due to the high background originating from the (129)I releases of the European reprocessing plants. (129)I atmospheric activity concentrations were compared with those of an anthropogenic radionuclide ((85)Kr). We did not find any correlation between (129)I and (85)Kr, both having nuclear reprocessing plant as the main source.

To test the sensitivity of using atmospheric (85)Kr to detect undeclared separation of plutonium from irradiated nuclear-reactor fuel, measurements of atmospheric (85)Kr taken in Tsukuba, Japan are analyzed to determine: (1) a lower limit of detection for discovering anthropogenic (85)Kr emissions, (2) the probability of detecting plutonium separation at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant, and (3) the extent to which these results can be generalized to other sites. A LLD of at least 3.4 sigma=0.14 Bq/m(3) with a theoretical false-positive rate of 0.05% is recommended for safeguards' purposes. At this threshold, the continuous separation of 100, 300, and 900 g equivalent weapon-grade plutonium per day was found to correspond to 10%, 50%, and 80% probability of detection, respectively. The smallest detected concentration was for the continuous separation of 45 g/day, with a probability of detection of about 0.6%. It was found that the detection rate is determined predominantly by the weather.

Gonad colour, determined by accumulated carotenoids, is an important marketability factor in sea urchin products. In this study, dietary carotenoids were fed to Paracentrotus lividus in prepared diets to test their effects on the sea urchin's gonad colour. All diets had the same basic content of protein, lipid, carbohydrate, ash and energy. Four diets were enriched with: (I) all-trans β-carotene; (II) astaxanthin; (III) zeaxanthin/lutein/β-carotene; and (IV) capsanthin/zeaxanthin/lutein/cryptoxanthin/β-carotene. A fifth diet had Dunaliella bardawil algal powder containing all-trans and 9-cis β-carotene added, and a sixth one was a control diet with no added carotenoids. Sea urchins were fed the control diet (no pigments) for 4 weeks, then the six experimental diets for 8 weeks. Carotenoid concentration in the gut and gonad was determined by tri-dimensional photo-diode array high performance liquid chromatography. Four qualitative colour categories were established: brown, pale yellow, medium-orange, and mango-orange. Gonad development and test diameter increased equally in all diet treatments. Carotenoid profile and concentration in the gut were higher than in the gonad or in the feed. Total carotenoid concentration was four- to ten-fold greater in the gut than in the gonad, and carotenoid profile in the gut was different from that of the diet. Gut and gonad total carotenoids, β-carotene, and echinenone concentration were not dependent on total dietary carotenoid concentration. Total carotenoid and β-carotene concentration in the gut, and total carotenoid and echinenone concentration in the gonad were significantly dependent on dietary β-carotene concentration. The percentage of gonads with acceptable colour was positively correlated with dietary and gut β-carotene concentration. Carotenoids not normally contained in the diet of P. lividus (astaxanthin, capsanthin and capsorbin), did not accumulate in the gonad. Echinenone was found in all gut and gonad samples. Over 90% of the gonads from P. lividus fed Dunaliella algal powder diet developed the optimal mango-orange colour and this diet led to the greatest echinenone concentration.

Protein and energy are two of the main limiting factors for sea urchin growth. However, the requirement of daily protein and energy to maximize gonadal production is still unknown. Paracentrotus lividus were fed three experimental diets: Ulva lactuca, Gracilaria conferta and a prepared diet for 2 months in the fall of 1999 and spring of 2000. Sea urchins from a laboratory-cultured population of equal age, weight and test diameter were used. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC%) for protein and energy, using acid-insoluble ash as a marker, were measured for all experimental diets. Apparent digestibility coefficients for protein was high (>75%) for all diets. Energy digestibility varied among the diets and was lowest for G. conferta (50-62%). The three diets contained varying digestible protein (DP) to digestible energy (DE) ratios of 25, 26 and12 mg kJ-1 for U. lactuca, G. conferta and the prepared diet respectively. Digestible protein intake was similar for all treatments, but DE intake was greater for sea urchins fed the prepared diet in both seasons. As a result, the gonad production was significantly higher for urchins fed the prepared diet, suggesting that energy was limiting in the algal diets. Paracentrotus lividus spawned during the spring experiment, resulting in protein loss in all treatments. Protein loss was lowest in the sea urchins fed the prepared diet. Enhanced gonadal growth and gamete development of P. lividus resulted from the higher dietary energy content of the prepared diet.

Trace analysis enables the sensitive detection of radionuclide concentrations in ground-level air in the range of microbecquerel per cubic meter (microBq m(-3)). Typical sampling intervals of less than one day up to a few days can be used in routine operation. Trace analysis measurements are performed in the framework of the German Integrated Measuring and Information system (IMIS) and the International Monitoring System (IMS) used for verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Within the environmental monitoring programmes of the German IMIS the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) performs measurements of aerosol-bound radionuclides and of radioactive noble gases in the atmosphere. Aerosols are collected on filters with high-volume air samplers and analysed by gamma-spectrometry, alpha-spectrometry, and integral measurements of beta-activity, with preceding radiochemical separation. Noble gas samples from 15 sites world-wide are analysed to observe the (85)Kr-release from nuclear fuel reprocessing plants and from seven sites in Germany to monitor the (133)Xe emitted from nuclear power plants. As part of the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the CTBT an automatic aerosol sampling and measuring system and an automatic noble gas sampling and measuring system will be operated by the BfS at Mount Schauinsland near Freiburg. Because of its expertise in noble gas measurements the BfS had been chosen to perform an intercomparison experiment in the BfS laboratory in Freiburg with several automatic noble gas sampling and measurement systems before their installation at IMS sites. To establish quality-assurance programmes for trace analysis performed for the German IMIS close collaboration between the involved German institutions has been established. First steps have been taken to expand cooperation to other European laboratories. Informal data exchange already occurs between trace-analysis laboratories in Europe (Ring of Five) and helps in cases of enhanced activity concentrations to get a rapid overview of the radiological situation and to identify possible sources.

Representation of atmospheric transport is a major source of error in the estimation of greenhouse gas sources and sinks by inverse modelling. Here we assess the impact on trace gas mole fractions of the new physical parameterizations recently implemented in the atmospheric global climate model LMDz to improve vertical diffusion, mesoscale mixing by thermal plumes in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), and deep convection in the troposphere. At the same time, the horizontal and vertical resolution of the model used in the inverse system has been increased. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of these developments on the representation of trace gas transport and chemistry, and to anticipate the implications for inversions of greenhouse gas emissions using such an updated model. Comparison of a one-dimensional version of LMDz with large eddy simulations shows that the thermal scheme simulates shallow convective tracer transport in the PBL over land very efficiently, and much better than previous versions of the model. This result is confirmed in three-dimensional simulations, by a much improved reproduction of the radon-222 diurnal cycle. However, the enhanced dynamics of tracer concentrations induces a stronger sensitivity of the new LMDz configuration to external meteorological forcings. At larger scales, the inter-hemispheric exchange is slightly slower when using the new version of the model, bringing them closer to observations. The increase in the vertical resolution (from 19 to 39 layers) significantly improves the representation of stratosphere/troposphere exchange. Furthermore, changes in atmospheric thermodynamic variables, such as temperature, due to changes in the PBL mixing modify chemical reaction rates, which perturb chemical equilibriums of reactive trace gases. One implication of LMDz model developments for future inversions of greenhouse gas emissions is the ability of the updated system to assimilate a larger amount of highfrequency data sampled at high-variability stations. The case presented in this chapter provides a prototype for using collaborative processes in large-scale conservation. The most important lesson of the chapter is that developing a program that addresses real-world social and environmental problems in ways that truly meet the common interest is both slow and time consuming. The Humboldt Bay Initiative (HBI) is composed of scientists, resource managers, and community members who came together to address the environmental problems of Humboldt Bay and its surrounding lands. The initial impetus for the group’s formation was frustration with the existing arena for addressing natural resource issues in the region. The arena featured polarized public discourse, fragmented jurisdictions, and decision making that was insufficiently contextual, both socially and biophysically. In its place, the group adopted an ecosystem-based management approach that is not only rooted in ecological science but also recognizes the importance of using governance mechanisms to solve environmental problems. Its successes to date have relied on strong leadership and robust collaboration among stakeholders. Its future depends on developing an institutional structure that enables it to interface with policy makers despite the fact that the current governance and constitutive structures are not designed to allow an independent group such as HBI to integrate easily into the decision-making processes.

Recent studies have shown that at a higher mercury (Hg) burden, the molar ratio of selenium (Se) and Hg in tissues tends to approximate 1:1 by the formation of biologically largely inert adducts. From the toxicological standpoint, this trapping of free Hg is welcome. However, this binding of Se to Hg reduces the portion of Se in tissues, which is available for the formation of essential selenoenzymes like glutathione peroxidase, type I deiodase, and so forth and could result in a relative deficiency of Se. Therefore, we tried to determine the concentration of non-Hg-associated Se in several human tissues. As there is no proved trace method for the speciation of non-Hg-bound and Hg-bound Se in tissues, the total concentrations of Hg and Se were determined and the portion of non-Hg-associated Se was calculated by the difference of the molar concentrations of Se and Hg. For this investigation, the following tissues were obtained by autopsy from 133 adults: kidney cortex, thyroid gland, liver, spleen, cerebrum cortex, and pituitary gland. In no case was an occupational Hg burden known. The results confirm the assumption of a 1:1 association of Hg and Se in human tissues. The mean concentration of non-Hg-bound Se was calculated to 576 microg/kg in the kidney cortex, 363 microg/kg in the thyroid gland, 308 microg/kg in the liver, 205 microg/kg in the spleen, 111 microg/kg in the cerebrum cortex, and 545 microg/kg in the pituitary gland. In none of the cases under investigation in any tissue was the molar Se/Hg ratio below 1. This means that a total deficiency of non-Hg-bound Se could not be seen in this normal population, even at a higher Hg burden. Nevertheless, at a suboptimal Se supply like in Germany, any reduction of the part of Se, which is available for the formation of essential seleno-enzymes, should be avoided. Therefore, any additional Hg burden such as from dental amalgam should to be considered critically. The different distribution of Hg and Se in the body confirms that there is a controlled hierarchy in the Se supply of different organs, which tries to prevent a Se deficiency in organs with essential seleno-enzymes like the thyroid gland even under an suboptimal Se supply.

After 5.5 years of data taking, GALLEX ended its experimental phase. The solar neutrino production rate, 76.4 ± 8 SNU, represents about 55% of the predicted rate. The As tests prove, at the 1% level, the reliability of the technique and the detection of 51Cr neutrino, with the nominal efficiency (93.0±8%), control the response of the detector to neutrinos in the solar energy range.

The production of germanium radioisotopes by high energy muons in GaCl3 has been measured in a tank containing 851 of a GaCl3HCl solution, irradiated in the CERN muon beam. From the measured cross-section, the background induced by cosmic muons in the GALLEX experiment in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory has been determined to be equivalent to (2.8 ± 0.6) SNU 3 . This represents about 4% of the solar neutrino signal measured by the GALLEX experiment.

We describe the production of a 62 PBq (62 × 1015 Bq) source of ∼ 750 keV neutrinos coming from the electron capture decay of 51Cr. This is the first time that such a high-intensity, low-energy neutrino source has been produced. The rationale for having such a source is to check the overall procedures of the radiochemical solar neutrino experiment, GALLEX. The source was obtained by neutron activation of 36 kg of enriched chromium at the Siloe reactor at Grenoble. The enriched chromium (containing 38.6% of 50Cr compared to 4.35% for natural chromium) was produced by the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, in the form of CrO3. It was then electrolyzed in Saclay to obtain chromium metal tubes, which were subsequently broken into coarse chips of typically 1 mm3 volume. The chromium chips were put inside 12 special zircalloy irradiation cells that were then placed around the Siloe reactor core, which had been specially reconfigured for this irradiation. The irradiation lasted for 23.8 days. Then the activated chromium was transferred in a stainless-steel container into a sealed tungsten shield having a wall thickness of 8.5 cm. The 51Cr activity at the end of the irradiation (EOB) has been measured to have a mean value of (62.5 ± 0.4) PBq, using several techniques: by neutronics and gamma scanning in the reactor shortly after EOB, with an ionization chamber, by calorimetry, and, after a considerable decay period, by gamma-ray spectroscopy and measurement of the non-radioactive 51V daughter. The source resided in the center of the GALLEX detector at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory between June 23, 1994 and October 10, 1994, irradiating the gallium target with a neutrino intensity well above the solar neutrino background. The results of this full-scale test are in good agreement with the expected efficiency of the entire GALLEX experiment calculated as a product of the known efficiencies of the various parts of the experimental procedure.

Since May 1991, the GALLEX experiment — installed in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory — is continuously monitoring the solar neutrino signal by measuring the 71 Ge production rate in a target of 30.3 tons of nat Ga. The measured signal 77.1 ± 8.5 (stat) +4.4 – 5.4 SNU (1 σ ) [1] is well below the Standard Solar Model (SSM) prediction: ⋍ 120–130 SNU. To exclude unknown systematic effects as responsible for the observed deficit, an experiment with a (62.5 ± 0.4) PBq 51 Cr neutrino source has been performed 2. , 3. . The ratio R=0.97 ± 0.11 between measured and expected Cr-produced 71 Ge demonstrates that the deficit cannot be ascribed to unknown experimental systematics. Although astrophysical reasons could still remain as a possible explanation of the “solar neutrino puzzle”, we recall that the GALLEX result, when considered together with the results of the other solar neutrino experiments, would allow to strongly constrain the neutrino masses and mixing angles in the framework of the MSW effect.

The miniaturized proportional counters used for the detection of 71 Ge in the solar neutrino project GALLEX are characterized. We also report on the construction techniques applied to build these counters and to achieve the described performance. A very low counting background is achieved by, among other things, careful selection of the materials used for construction. The total 71 Ge detection efficiency after applying cuts to reduce the background is about 66%.

Parallel monitoring of 222Rn and its short-lived progeny (218Po and 214Pb) were carried out from November 2007 to April 2008 close to the top of the Schauinsland mountain, partly covered with forest, in South-West Germany. Samples were aspired from the same location at 2.5 m above ground level. We measured 222Rn with a dual flow loop, two-filter detector and its short-lived progeny with a one-filter detector. A reference sector for events, facing a steep valley and dominated by pasture, was used to minimize differences between 222Rn and progeny-derived 222Rn activity concentrations. In the two major wind sectors covered by forest to a distance between 60 m and 80 m towards the station progeny-derived 222Rn activity concentration was on average equal to 87% (without precipitation) and 74% (with precipitation) of 222Rn activity concentration.

The oxygen dependence of mitochondrial respiration was investigated using suspensions of mitochondria and quiescent ventricular myocytes isolated from adult rat hearts. A new optical method was used to determine oxygen concentration in the suspending media. The P50 for respiration for coupled mitochondria at a high [ATP]/[ADP].[Pi] ratio and oxidizing glutamate/malate was 0.45 +/- 0.03 microM but was increased to 0.57 +/- 0.02 microM by the addition of succinate to the substrate mixture. This value was decreased to less than 0.06 +/- 0.01 microM when the ATP/ADP.Pi ratio was decreased with the uncoupler, carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone. The P50 value in resting myocytes was 2.23 +/- 0.13 microM at a Vmax of 13.22 +/- 1.38 nmol of O2/g, dry weight/min. During resting conditions, the creatine phosphate/creatine and ATPfree/ADPfree ratios were high in these cells, 6.81 +/- 1.11 and 1131 +/- 185, respectively. Addition of 1 mM Ca2+ to the suspending media increased the P50 by 50% whereas respiration rose by only 10%. Respiratory rate was increased up to about 10-fold by uncoupling the cells, but the P50 increased by less than 3-fold. When these uncoupled cells were inhibited with Amytal to lower the rate of oxygen consumption to that of resting cells, the P50 fell to 1.25 +/- 0.14 microM. Diffusion models indicate that in resting myocytes, the oxygen concentration difference from sarcolemma to cell core was approximately 1.84 microM with an additional difference of about 0.27 microM attributed to the unstirred layer of media surrounding each cell. The intracellular oxygen diffusivity coefficient in myocytes was calculated to be 0.30 x 10(-5) cm2/s. The results show that the oxygen dependence of respiration is modulated by the cellular metabolic state. At near maximal levels of respiration or on recovery from hypoxic episodes, oxygen diffusion may become an important determinant of the oxygen dependence of myocardial respiration.

The GALLEX collaboration aims at the detection of solar neutrinos in a radiochemical experiment employing 30 tons of Gallium in form of concentrated aqueous Gallium-chloride solution. The detector is primarily sensitive to the otherwise inaccessible pp-neutrinos. Details of the experiment have been repeatedly described before [1-7]. Here we report the present status of implementation in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). So far, 12.2 tons of Gallium are at hand. The present status of development allows to start the first full scale run at the time when 30 tons of Gallium become available. This date is expected to be January, 1990.

[1] We report on observations of atmospheric 210Pb, coregistered with inorganic and organic aerosol species, during 2002–2004 at six European sites. This network reaches from the Azores to the Hungarian plain to represent marine, coastal, mountain and continental conditions. The motivation for observing this natural secondary aerosol tracer was to give insight to what extent it might assist in understanding the more complex aerosol chemistry changes. Synopsis of the 210Pb variability revealed a continental increase, up to a factor of three, from west to east. During the three winter months, we find a variation on nearly the same order in the 210Pb concentration between low- and high-altitude sites. Seasonal 210Pb cycles exhibit summer/winter ratios of around 2–3 at high-altitude sites, but remain damped at low-altitude stations. However, all sites show distinct 210Pb changes of around ±50% independent of season on the synoptic timescale. Comparison of concentration variations of organic carbon (OC) and anthropogenic sulphate with the 210Pb variations show largest differences associated with the seasonal cycle at the low-altitude sites. In contrast, significant covariations of all three components are seen on the synoptic timescale for these sites. At high altitudes, clear covariations of OC and anthropogenic sulphate with 210Pb are seen on both seasonal and synoptic timescales. At two mountain sites with comparable elevation, all three aerosol compounds show strong intersite correlations along with systematic enhancements at the downwind site. Attributing these offsets to a common continental pileup, simple 1-box model calculations yielded OC- and anthropogenic sulphate-related emission flux densities, which are broadly in agreement with the expected values.

This article introduces a new approach to automatic car detection in monocular high resolution aerial images. The extraction is based on a 3D-model that describes the prominent geometric features of cars by a wireframe representation. Furthermore, vehicle color, windshield color, and intensity of a car's shadow area are included as radiometric features. During extraction, the model automatically adapts the expected saliency of these features depending on vehicle color measured from the image and the actual illumination direction given a priori. Car extraction is carried out by matching the model "top-down" to the image and evaluating the support found in the image. In contrast to most of the related work, our approach neither relies on external information like digital maps or site models, nor it is limited to one single vehicle model. Various examples illustrate the applicability of this approach. However, they also show the deficiencies which clearly define the next steps of our future work.

We report the GALLEX solar neutrino results for the measuring period GALLEX III, the period from 12 October 1994-4 October 1995. Counting for these runs was completed on 29 March 1996. The GALLEX III result (14 runs) is [53.9 ± 10.6(stat.) ± 3.1 (syst.)] SNU (1σ). This is 15.8 SNU below but statistically compatible with the new combined result for GALLEX (I+II+III) (53 runs), which is [69.7 ± 6.7(stat.) −4.5 +3.9 (syst.)] SNU (1σ) or (69.7 −8.1 +7.8 ) SNU with errors quadratically added. We also give the preliminary result from our second 51 Cr-source experiment: the measured detector response is 83±10% of expectation. The combined result from both GALLEX 51 Cr-source experiments is 92±8% of expectation.

The radiochemical GALLEX experiment, which has been measuring the solar neutrino flux since May 1991, has performed an investigation with an intense man-made 51 Cr neutrino source (61.9 ± 1.2 PBq). The source, produced via neutron irradiation of ≈ 36 kg of chromium enriched in 50 Cr, primarily emits 746 keV neutrinos. It was placed for a period of 3.5 months in the reentrant tube in the GALLEX tank, to expose the gallium chloride target to a known neutrino flux. This experiment provides the ratio, R , of the production rate of Cr-produced 71 Ge measured in these source exposures to the rate expected from the known source activity: R = 1.04 ± 0.12. This result not only constitutes the first observation of low-energy neutrinos from a terrestrial source, but also (a) provides an overall check of GALLEX, indicating that there are no significant experimental artifacts or unknown errors at the 10% level that are comparable to the 40% deficit in observed solar neutrino signal, and (b) directly demonstrates for the first time, using a man-made neutrino source, the validity of the basic principles of radiochemical methods used to detect rare events (at the level of 10 atoms or less). Because of the close similarity in neutrino energy spectra from 51 Cr and from the solar 7 Be branch, this source experiment also shows that the gallium detector is sensitive to 7 Be neutrinos with full efficiency.

The galliumchloride detector operated by the GALLEX-collaboration in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory responds primarily to pp-neutrinos. They are produced in the primary fusion reaction of hydrogen into deuterium and directly coupled to the solar luminosity. Standard Solar Models predict ca. 58% of the total signal expected in GALLEX (123-132 SNU) to be due to pp-neutrinos. The relative pp-neutrino dominance becomes even larger if the deficit of higher energy neutrinos (as observed in the Homestake- and Kamiokande experiments) is considered. During the first data taking period, 15 solar runs had been performed within the exposure period 14.5.1991 - 29.4.1992. The result, 81 {+-} 17 {+-} 9 SNU provided the first experimental evidence for pp-neutrinos from the Sun. At the same time, it confirmed the depression of higher energy neutrino fluxes relative to the model predictions. Here the authors report the results of 15 more solar neutrino runs, covering the period 19.8.92 - 13.10.93. They obtain 78 {+-} 13 {+-} 5 SNU. Evaluated together, the result for all 30 runs is 79 {+-} 10 {+-} 6 SNU. While the SNU rate of GALLEX I is well reproduced the statistical error has been reduced so substantially that a value of signal +2{sigma}more » is required to accommodate not only pp-and pep- but also the {sup 7}Be-neutrino induced {sup 71}Ge-production. Contrary, the fate of {sup 8}B-neutrinos has only little discernible effect on the GALLEX data. In conclusion, with the present errors GALLEX constitutes a 2.5 {sigma} problem for {sup 7}Be neutrinos within the frame of {open_quotes}astrophysical{close_quotes} solutions. Alternatively, the particle physics solution (MSW-effect) can consistently explain all available solar neutrino results, leading to a most probable mass scale with the muon-neutrino at approximately 3 meV (milli-eV). However, since the GALLEX result allows the presence of pp and pep neutrinos at full strength. the latter explanation of the data is not forced.« less

We report the solar neutrino results from the complete set of runs in the exposure period, GALLEX II, from 19 August 1992 - 23 June 1994. Counting for these runs was completed on 10 December 1994. The GALLEX II result (24 runs) is [75.2±9.7 (stat) −4.6+4.1 (syst)] SNU (1 σ). After three years of recording the solar neutrino flux with the GALLEX detector, the combined result from the 39 completed solar runs (GALLEX I+II) is [77.1±8.5 (stat) −5.4+4.4 (syst) SNU (1 σ) or 77.1 −10.1+9.6 SNU with errors combined in quadrature. The combined error (± 13%) has now approached a level where the limits on the derived contribution of 7Be neutrinos to the GALLEX signal confront the predictions of solar models.

The first period (GALLEX I) of data taking in the GALLEX solar neutrino experiment has been completed. From 14 May 1991 to 29 April 1992, the experiment observed the solar neutrino flux using neutrino capture by 71 Ga to form 71 Ge. Counting ended on 2 November 1992. The final result from the 15 runs of this periodpis (81±17 [ stat .]±9 [ syst .]) SNU (1 σ ). The first 6 runs of GALLEX II recorded the neutrino signal from 19 August 1992 to 3 February 1993. The preliminary result for this period is (97±23 [ stat .]±7 [ syst .]) SNU (1 σ ). With counting data considered until 29 April 1993, the joint result for all 21 runs is (87±14 [ stat .]±7 [ syst .]) SNU (1 σ ). The present neutrino recording period GALLEX II is continuing with one solar exposure every four weeks.

International audience; We have measured the rate of production of $^{71}$Ge from $^{71}$Ga by solar neutrinos. The target consists of 30.3 t of gallium in the form of 8.13 M aqueous gallium chloride solution (101 t), shielded by $\approx$ 3300 m water equivalent of standard rock in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (Italy). In nearly one year of operation, 14 measurements of the production rate of $^{71}$Ge were carried out to give, after corrections for side reactions and other backgrounds, an average value of 83$\pm$19 (stat.)$\pm$8 (syst.) SNU (l$\sigma$) due to solar neutrinos. This conclusion constitutes the first observation of solar pp neutrinos. Our result is consistent with the presence of the full pp neutrino flux expected according to the "standard solar model" together with a reduced flux of $^8$B+$^7$Be neutrinos as observed in the Homestake and Kamiokande experiments. Astrophysical reasons remain as a possible explanation of the solar neutrino problem. On the other hand, if the result is to be interpreted in terms of the MSW effect, it would fix neutrino masses and mixing angles within a very restricted range.

The GALLEX collaboration is performing an experiment for the detection of neutrinos coming principally from the p-p fusion reaction in the Sun, via the reaction ve +71Ga →71Ge + e-. The experiment is running in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory of INFN, using as a target 30.3 tons of gallium in the form of 8.13 molar aqueous GaCl3 solution. A report is given of the status of GALLEX after the end of the operations devoted to the removal from the solution of the cosmogenically formed Ge isotopes, completed in the middle of 1991. The experiment is now collecting data on solar neutrinos and the data analysis is in progress. Preliminary results concerning the first year of measurement are presented.

The GALLEX result 83 ± 19 (stat.) ± 8 (syst.) SNU is two standard deviations below the predictions of stellar model calculations (124–132 SNU). To fit this result together with those of the chlorine and Kamiokande experiments requires severe stretching of solar models but does not rule out such a procedure, leaving the possibility of massless neutrinos. It clearly implies that the pp neutrinos have been detected. The Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) mechanism provides a good fit, and the GALLEX result fixes the Δm 2 and sin 2 2 θ parameters in two very confined ranges (around Δm 2 = 6 × 10 −6 eV 2 and sin 2 2 θ = 7 × 10 −3 and around Δm 2 = 8 × 10 −6 eV 2 and sin 2 2 θ = 0.6). Explanations of the solar neutrino problems based on the decay or magnetic interactions of neutrinos are disfavoured.

The oxygen dependence of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation measured in isolated cells of cardiac and non-cardiac origin are affected by the metabolic state of the cells. The contribution of oxygen diffusion to the measured P50 value in resting cells is small. In cardiac myocytes, and possibly in the other cells as well, this contribution may become significant near maximal levels of respiration. The influence of cellular energy metabolism on the oxygen dependence of respiration in cardiac myocytes suggests strongly that mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in these cells is an oxygen sensor for adjusting coronary vascular tone during normal cardiac function.
