Aim Anatomy teaching increasingly utilises technology alongside dissection to improve anatomy teaching. Student use of the touchscreen computers in dissection sessions at the University of St. Andrews was infrequent, with students lacking confidence in touchscreen use. The aim of this QI project was to improve medical student confidence and increase the use of touchscreen computers in the DR during dissection sessions. Method A data-collection tool was designed and tested. It included 4 Likert-style and one blank space question. 111 baseline responses from 3rd-year medical students were collected over 1 week in November 2021. Documentation was optimised for touchscreen usage. Cycle 2 was collected from the same cohort, with 83 responses. The second intervention introduced styluses. Cycle 3, with 85 responses, was collected. Results Question 1 examined awareness of touchscreen function. Positive responses (agree and strongly agree) increased from 76.5% to 95.2%, then 97.7% after interventions 1 and 2 respectively. Positive responses for question 2, examining confidence, improved from 53.2% to 88.0%, then 96.5%. Positive responses to question 3, examining the frequency of touchscreen use, improved from 49.6% to 91.6% then 92.9%. Positive responses for question 4, examining how useful touchscreens were for student learning, improved from 70.3% to 94.0%, then 97.7%. Blank space questions demonstrated positive opinions of changes made in the dissection room. Conclusions The significant and sustained increase in positive responses regarding student confidence, touchscreen use and the usefulness of touchscreens as an adjunct to dissection in the DR demonstrated significant improvement in the use of the facilities and student educational experience.

Earth science information (data, knowledge, advice) can enhance the evidence base for land-use decision-making. The utility of this information depends on factors such as the context and objectives of land-use decisions, the timeliness and efficiency with which earth science information is delivered, and the strength, relevance, uncertainties and risks assigned to earth science information relative to other inputs. We investigate land-use decision-making practices in Christchurch, New Zealand and the surrounding region in response to mass movement (e.g., rockfall, cliff collapses) and ground surface fault rupture hazards incurred during the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence (CES). Rockfall fatality risk models combining hazard, exposure and vulnerability data were co-produced by earth scientists and decision-makers and formed primary evidence for risk-based land-use decision-making with adaptive capacity. A public decision appeal process enabled consideration of additional earth science information, primarily via stakeholder requests. For fault rupture hazards, pre-disaster geotechnical guidelines and collaboration networks enhanced the ability of earth scientists to rapidly acquire relevant observational data to meet the demands of decision-makers. Expeditious decision-making granted permissive consent for rebuilding in the fault rupture zone based on preliminary scientific advice that was subsequently supported by more comprehensive geological investigations. Rapidly fluctuating and diverse demands for post-disaster earth science information may be best met through prior establishment of (i) land-use policies and technical guidelines tailored for a variety of diverse disaster scenarios, (ii) hazard and risk analyses in land-use plans, including acquisition of geospatial and other earth science data, and (iii) co-ordinated science networks that may comprise sub-groups with diverse goals, operational perspectives and protocols, which allow the many facets of science information acquisition and delivery to be successfully addressed. Despite the collective knowledge shared here, some recent land use practices in New Zealand continue to prioritize other (e.g., socioeconomic) factors above earth science information, even in areas of extreme disaster risk.

Spatial patterns of genetic variation can reveal otherwise cryptic evolutionary and landscape processes. In northwestern Costa Rica, an approximately concordant genetic discontinuity occurs among populations of several plant species. We conducted phylogeographic analyses of an epiphytic orchid, Brassavola nodosa, to test for genetic discontinuity and to explore its underlying causes. We genotyped 18 populations with 19 nuclear loci and two non-coding chloroplast sequence regions. We estimated genetic diversity and structure, relative importance of pollen and seed dispersal, and divergence time to understand how genetic diversity was spatially partitioned. Nuclear genetic diversity was high with little differentiation among populations (G(STn) = 0.065). In contrast, chloroplast haplotypes were highly structured (G(STc) = 0.570) and reveal a discontinuity between northwestern and southeastern populations within Costa Rica. Haplotype differences suggest two formerly isolated lineages that diverged ~10,000–100,000 YBP. Haplotype mixing and greater genetic diversity occur in an intermediate transition zone. Patterns of nuclear and chloroplast data were consistent. Different levels of genetic differentiation for the two genomes reflect the relative effectiveness of biotic versus abiotic dispersers of pollen and seeds, respectively. Isolation of the two lineages likely resulted from the complex environmental and geophysical history of the region. Our results suggest a recent cryptic seed dispersal barrier and/or zone of secondary contact. We hypothesize that powerful northeasterly trade winds hinder movement of wind-borne seeds between the two regions, while the multi-directional dispersal of pollen by strong-flying sphinx moths resulted in lower differentiation of nuclear loci.

Latitudinal diversity gradients have provided many insights into species differentiation and community processes. In the well-studied intertidal zone, however, little is known about latitudinal diversity in microbiomes associated with habitat-forming hosts. We investigated microbiomes of Fucus vesiculosus because of deep understanding of this model system and its latitudinally large, cross-Atlantic range. Given multiple effects of photoperiod, we predicted that cross-Atlantic microbiomes of the Fucus microbiome would be similar at similar latitudes and correlate with environmental factors. We found that community structure and individual amplicon sequencing variants (ASVs) showed distinctive latitudinal distributions, but alpha diversity did not. Latitudinal differentiation was mostly driven by ASVs that were more abundant in cold temperate to subarctic (e.g., Granulosicoccus_t3260, Burkholderia/Caballeronia/Paraburkholderia_t8371) or warm temperate (Pleurocapsa_t10392) latitudes. Their latitudinal distributions correlated with different humidity, tidal heights, and air/sea temperatures, but rarely with irradiance or photoperiod. Many ASVs in potentially symbiotic genera displayed novel phylogenetic biodiversity with differential distributions among tissues and regions, including closely related ASVs with differing north-south distributions that correlated with Fucus phylogeography. An apparent southern range contraction of F. vesiculosus in the NW Atlantic on the North Carolina coast mimics that recently observed in the NE Atlantic. We suggest cross-Atlantic microbial structure of F. vesiculosus is related to a combination of past (glacial-cycle) and contemporary environmental drivers.

We believe the switch to a digital pathology (DP) workflow is imminent and it is essential to understand the economic implications of conversion. Many aspects of the adoption of DP will be disruptive and have a direct financial impact, both in short term costs, such as investment in equipment and personnel, and long term revenue potential, such as improved productivity and novel tests. The focus of this whitepaper is to educate pathologists, laboratorians and other stakeholders about the business and monetary considerations of converting to a digital pathology workflow. The components of a DP business plan will be thoroughly summarized, and guidance will be provided on how to build a case for adoption and implementation as well as a roadmap for transitioning from an analog to a digital pathology workflow in various laboratory settings. It is important to clarify that this publication is not intended to list prices although some financials will be mentioned as examples. The authors encourage readers who are evaluating conversion to a DP workflow to use this paper as a foundational guide for conducting a thorough and complete assessment while incorporating in current market pricing. Contributors to this paper analyzed peer-reviewed literature and data collected from various institutions, some of which are mentioned. Digital pathology will change the way we practice through facilitating patient access to expert pathology services and enabling image analysis tools and assays to aid in diagnosis, prognosis, risk stratification and therapeutic selection. Together, they will result in the delivery of valuable information from which to make better decisions and improve the health of patients.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVC/D) is a heritable cardiomyopathy characterized by fibro-fatty replacement of right ventricular myocardium. Diagnostic criteria, established in 1994 and modified in 2010, are based on predominately adult manifestations of ARVC/D. The goal of this paper is to review a single-center experience with pediatric ARVC/D and propose modifications of current diagnostic criteria to appropriately include pediatric ARVC/D. We identified 16 pediatric cases of ARVC/D from our tertiary care center. Patient demographics, presentation, course, genetic testing, and family history were reviewed. Sixteen patients were diagnosed with ARVC/D through the modified diagnostic criteria, genetic testing, and pathology. Five patients had positive family histories. Five patients presented with cardiac arrest, and six were found to have ventricular tachycardia. Two patients presented with heart failure. Six autopsies, six explanted hearts, and three biopsies found massive fibro-fatty infiltration of the right ventricular wall. Six patients underwent heart transplantation, and two have received automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Two patients had identifiable genetic mutations previously noted in the literature. One patient had a novel mutation of a known ARVC/D gene. Many pediatric patients do not meet the current ARVC/D diagnostic criteria, resulting in delays in diagnosis and treatment. The current criteria need further revision to encompass pediatric manifestations of ARVC/D. In our opinion, pathological and clinical findings alone are sufficient for accurate diagnosis of pediatric ARVC/D. Creating modified pediatric criteria would facilitate prompt diagnosis and management of ARVC/D and facilitate structured research with the goal of improving outcomes.

Two cases of devastating fetal malformations associated with vanished monochorionic twins were identified upon review of pathology files. A 35-year-old G1P0 woman and 36-year-old G3P1 woman were both diagnosed with an intrauterine twin gestation via transvaginal ultrasound at 10 weeks. The spectrum of fetal anomalies ranged from omphalocele, bilateral upper extremity, and unilateral lower extremity hypoplasia, to craniofacial malformation with diaphragmatic hernia. On histopathologic examination, the placentas demonstrated vascular anastomoses between the surviving co-twin and the “vanished” fetal sac. We propose anastomotic placental vasculature as a contributing factor to the observed fetal malformations. Additionally, genetic or teratogenic factors may have been attributed to the demise of the first twin and the anomalies seen in the other twin. While such instances are rare, they are important to consider when counseling patients regarding outcomes associated with a monochorionic vanished twin.

Pediatric cardiac tumors are extremely rare and usually benign. We selected four unique cases of pediatric cardiac tumors from a 15-year period at our institution. The four chosen cases represent unique, rare primary tumors of the heart. Our selection includes a case of Rosai Dorfman disease without systemic involvement, which is, to our knowledge, the second case of isolated cardiac Rosai Dorfman disease in a child. We present a case of subtotal replacement of myocardium by granulocytic sarcoma with minimal bone marrow involvement, representing the first reported case in a child manifested as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, as well as a case of a primary synovial sarcoma arising from the atrioventricular (AV) node, representing the fourth reported pediatric case of a cardiac synovial sarcoma, and it is the first to arise from the AV node. Finally, we present a primary congenital infantile fibrosarcoma of the heart, which is, to our knowledge, the first confirmed cardiac congenital infantile fibrosarcoma. These four cases represent the need for continued inclusion of rare cardiac conditions in a clinician's differential diagnosis. Furthermore, they present the need for more in-depth molecular and genomic analysis of pediatric cardiac tumors in order to identify their etiopathogenesis.

In two-dimensional capillary electrophoresis, a sample undergoes separation in the first dimension capillary by sieving electrophoresis. Fractions are periodically transferred across an interface into a second dimension capillary, where components are further resolved by micellar electrokinetic capillary electrophoresis. Previous instruments employed one pair of capillaries to analyze a single sample. We now report a multiplexed system that allows separation of five samples in parallel. Samples are injected into five first-dimension capillaries, fractions are transferred across an interface to 5 second-dimension capillaries, and analyte is detected by laser-induced fluorescence in a five-capillary sheath-flow cuvette. The instrument produces detection limits of 940 +/- 350 yoctomoles for 3-(2-furoyl)quinoline-2-carboxaldehyde labeled trypsin inhibitor in one-dimensional separation; detection limits degrade by a factor of 3.8 for two-dimensional separations. Two-dimensional capillary electrophoresis expression fingerprints were obtained from homogenates prepared from a lung cancer (A549) cell line, on the basis of capillary sieving electrophoresis (CSE) and micellar electrophoresis capillary chromatography (MECC). An average of 131 spots is resolved with signal-to-noise greater than 10. A Gaussian surface was fit to a set of 20 spots in each electropherogram. The mean spot width, expressed as standard deviation of the Gaussian function, was 2.3 +/- 0.7 transfers in the CSE dimension and 0.46 +/- 0.25 s in the MECC dimension. The standard deviation in spot position was 1.8 +/- 1.2 transfers in the CSE dimension and 0.88 +/- 0.55 s in the MECC dimension. Spot capacity was 300.

As neighbouring areas continue to encroach upon wastewater treatment plants, there is an increasing need for odour control to mitigate potential negative offsite odorous impacts. One technology that is gaining widespread acceptance is biotechnology, which utilises the inherent ability of certain microorganisms to biodegrade offensive odorous compounds. Two main advantages of this form of treatment over other odour control technologies include the absence of hazardous chemicals and relatively low operation and maintenance requirements. The purpose of this paper is to provide information related to odour control design criteria used in sizing/selecting biotechnology-based odour control technologies, and to provide odour removal performance data obtained from several different biotechnology-based odour control systems. CH2M HILL has collected biotechnology-based odour control performance data over the last several years in order to track the continued performance of various biofilters and biotowers over time. Specifically, odour removal performance data have been collected from soil-, organic- and inorganic-media biofilters and inert inorganic media biotowers. Results indicate that biotechnology-based odour control is a viable and consistent technology capable of achieving high removal performance for odour and hydrogen sulphide. It is anticipated that the information presented in this paper will be of interest to anyone involved with odour control technology evaluation/selection or design review.

Odour emissions and corrosion concerns can be a constant focus for many wastewater treatment and collection system owners, usually from the first day that their collection systems begin operation. Many sewer systems are reaching the end of their useful life, or have experienced either odour or corrosion issues. This paper shows a link between odour generation and corrosion potential, and how modelling can be used to assist in odour/corrosion assessments of existing wastewater collection systems. A model has been developed that is capable of predicting liquid-phase sulphide generation and subsequent release to overlying sewer headspace as hydrogen sulphide (H2S), where it can be the source of either odour or corrosion problems. This paper presents an overview of the model, and uses a case study involving both odour and corrosion issues to demonstrate the utility in modelling. The model was used to identify potential locations within the system where odour/corrosion may be problematic, as well as assisting in the evaluation of potential odour control alternatives.

Multidimensional analysis of denatured milk proteins is reported using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with dynamic surface tension detection (DSTD). A hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) column (a TSK-Gel Phenyl-5PW column, TosoBiosep), in the presence of 3.0 M guanidine hydrochloride (GdmHCl) as denaturing agent is employed as the mobile phase. Dynamic surface tension is measured through the differential pressure across the liquid-air interface of repeatedly growing and detaching drops. Continuous surface tension measurement throughout the entire drop growth (50 ms to 4 s) is achieved, for each eluting drop of 4 s length, providing insight into both the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of molecular orientation processes at the liquid-air interface. An automated calibration procedure and data analysis method is applied with the DSTD system, which allows two unique solvents to be used, the HIC mobile phase for the sample and a second solvent (water for example) for the standard, permitting real-time dynamic surface tension data to be obtained. Three-dimensional data is obtained, with surface tension as a function of drop time first converted to surface pressure, which is plotted as a function of the chromatographic elution time axis. Experiments were initially performed using flow injection analysis (FIA) with the DSTD system for investigating commercial single standard milk proteins (alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-, beta-, kappa-casein and a casein mixture) denatured by GdmHCl. These FIA-DSTD experiments allowed the separation and detection conditions to be optimized for the HIC-DSTD experiments. Thus, the HIC-DSTD system has been optimized and successfully applied to the selective analysis of surface-active casein fractions (alpha s1- and beta-casein) in a commercial casein mixture, raw milk samples (cow's, ewe's and goat's milk) and other diary products (yogurt, stracchino, mozzarella, parmesan cheese and chocolate cream). The different samples were readily distinguished based upon the selectivity provided by the HIC-DSTD method. The selectivity advantage of using DSTD relative to absorbance detection is also demonstrated.

A drop-based dynamic surface-tension detector (DSTD) has been used to study the dynamic surface tension behavior of proteins denatured in guanidine thiocyanate (GndSCN). The dynamic surface tension at the air-liquid interface is obtained by measuring the internal pressure of drops that grow and detach at a specified rate. In the method the sample of interest is injected and subsequently flows to the DSTD-sensing capillary tip. For this work, a novel DSTD calibration procedure utilizing two distinct mobile phases is applied. Here, the mobile phases are aqueous with different constituents, for example GndSCN and phosphate buffer, either added or omitted. The dual-mobile phase calibration procedure gives the analyst the capability of making protein measurements in a GndSCN-phosphate buffer mobile phase, while measuring a calibration standard in another mobile phase, such as water, in which the surface tension of the calibration standard is readily available. Results are presented with drop volumes of either 2 microL (i.e. 2-s drops) or 7 microL (i.e. 7-s drops) for proteins varying in molar mass from 12,000 to 330,000 g mol(-1). We demonstrate that the DSTD can be used to determine the molar mass of proteins denatured in GndSCN. The method applies a regime where the denatured protein is detected by surface-active properties, and selectivity with regard to molar mass is contained in the dynamic component of the DSTD signal. The dynamic surface pressure signals of the denatured proteins suggest that diffusion plays a large role in the kinetics of the surface activity. The limit of detection for the denatured proteins studied ranged from 3 mg L(-1) to 14 mg L(-1). The DSTD, coupled with the novel dual-mobile phase calibration procedure, can be used to investigate the fundamental properties of proteins. Insight into the behavior at the air-liquid interface for native and denatured proteins is achieved; this is a novel tool for studying protein denaturation, complementary to other common approaches such as spectroscopy and calorimetry. Furthermore, the reported method could be widely applied to the study of effects on the interfacial properties of proteins after a variety of chemical and physical modifications that are possible with the dual-mobile phase calibration procedure.

A sequential injection analysis (SIA) system is coupled with dynamic surface tension detection (DSTD) for the purpose of studying the interfacial properties of surface-active samples. DSTD is a novel analyzer based upon a growing drop method, utilizing a pressure sensor measurement of drop pressure. The pressure signal depends on the surface tension properties of sample solution drops that grow and detach at the end of a capillary tip. In this work, SIA was used for creating a reagent concentration gradient, and for blending the reagent gradient with a steady-state sample. The sample, consisting of either sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or poly(ethylene glycol) at 1470 g mol(-1) (PEG 1470), elutes with a steady-state concentration at the center of the sample plug. Reagents such as Brij(R)35, tetrabutylammonium (TBA) hydroxide and beta-cyclodextrin were introduced as a concentration gradient that begins after the sample plug has reached the steady-state concentration. By blending the reagent concentration gradient with the sample plug using SIA/DSTD, the kinetic surface pressure signal of samples mixed with various reagent concentrations is observed and evaluated in a high throughput fashion. It was found that the SIA/DSTD method consumes lesser reagent and required significantly less analysis time than traditional FIA/DSTD. Four unique chemical systems were studied with regard to how surface activity is influenced, as observed through the surface tension signal: surface activity addition, surface activity reduction due to competition, surface activity enhancement due to ion-pair formation, and surface activity reduction due to bulk phase binding chemistry.

First, a novel calibration method is used to expand the current understanding of spherical drop growth and elongation that occurs during on-line measurements of surface pressure using the dynamic surface tension detector (DSTD). Using a novel surface tension calibration method, the drop radius is calculated as a function of time from experimental drop pressure data and compared to the theoretical drop radius calculated from volumetric flow rate. From this comparison, the drop volume at which the drop shape starts to deviate ( approximately 4 mul) from a spherical shape is readily observed and deviates more significantly by approximately 6 mul drop volume (5% deviation in the ideal spherical drop radius) for the capillary sensing tip employed in the DSTD. From this assessment of drop shape, an experimental method for precise drop detachment referred to as pneumatic drop detachment is employed at a drop volume of 2 mul (two second drops at 60 mul/min) in order to provide rapid dynamic surface tension measurements via the novel on-line calibration methodology. Second, the DSTD is used to observe and study kinetic information for surface-active molecules and association complexes adsorbing to an air-liquid drop interface. Dynamic surface tension measurements are made for sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in the absence and presence of either tetra butyl ammonium (TBA) or chromium (III). Sensitive, indirect detection of chromium and other multiply charged metals at low concentrations is also investigated. The DSTD is utilized in examining the dynamic nature of SDS: cation association at the air-liquid interface of a growing drop. Either TBA or Cr(III) were found to substantially enhance the surface tension lowering of dodecyl sulfate (DS), but the surface tension lowering is accompanied by a considerable kinetic dependence. Essentially, the surface tension lowering of these DS: cation complexes is found to be a fairly slow process in the context of the two second DSTD measurement. The limit of detection for both SDS and chromium (III) is in the 300-400 part-per-billion (by mass) range.

A chemical analyzer will be reported based upon coupling liquid chromatography (LC) with a water mobile phase via a novel interface to high-speed capillary gas chromatography (GC). The interface preserves the temporal information of the LC separation, thus a comprehensive two-dimensional LC×GC separation is obtained. The LC separation is in the 5–10 min range, while the GC separations are in the 1–2 second range. For a 5 min LC separation, 150 GC separations are obtained if the GC separations are every 2 s, thus a truly comprehensive LC×GC data density is obtained. The 100% water mobile phase simplifies instrumental requirements, thus enhancing separation and detection strategies, thus broadening the scope of LC to on-line process analysis and field monitoring applications by improving safety and minimizing waste. Volatile organic compounds are analyzed by LC×GC with enhanced chemical selectivity. Thus, this comprehensive LC×GC instrument is a useful alternative to current methods that employ headspace analysis. Separations of compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, o-xylene (BTEX), as well as chloroform and methylene chloride are presented. Objectives: The objective of this work is to provide updated guidelines for the evaluation and treatment of girls and women with Turner syndrome (TS). Participants: The Turner Syndrome Consensus Study Group is a multidisciplinary panel of experts with relevant clinical and research experience with TS that met in Bethesda, Maryland, April 2006. The meeting was supported by the National Institute of Child Health and unrestricted educational grants from pharmaceutical companies. Evidence: The study group used peer-reviewed published information to form its principal recommendations. Expert opinion was used where good evidence was lacking. Consensus: The study group met for 3 d to discuss key issues. Breakout groups focused on genetic, cardiological, auxological, psychological, gynecological, and general medical concerns and drafted recommendations for presentation to the whole group. Draft reports were available for additional comment on the meeting web site. Synthesis of the section reports and final revisions were reviewed by e-mail and approved by whole-group consensus. Conclusions:Wesuggest that parents receiving a prenatal diagnosis of TS be advised of the broad phenotypic spectrum and the good quality of life observed in TS in recent years. We recommend that magnetic resonance angiography be used in addition to echocardiography to evaluate the cardiovascular system and suggest that patients with defined cardiovascular defects be cautioned in regard to pregnancy and certain types of exercise. We recommend that puberty should not be delayed to promote statural growth. We suggest a comprehensive educational evaluation in early childhood to identify potential attention-deficit or nonverbal learning disorders. We suggest that caregivers address the prospect of premature ovarian failure in an open and sensitive manner and emphasize the critical importance of estrogen treatment for feminization and for bone health during the adult years. All individuals with TS require continued monitoring of hearing and thyroid function throughout the lifespan. We suggest that adults with TS be monitored for aortic enlargement, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. This disorder presents the clinician with a challenging array of genetic, developmental, endocrine, cardiovascular, psychosocial, and reproductive issues. There have been important advances in each of these arenas since publication of the previous recommendations for the care of girls and women with TS (2). This paper is based on the proceedings of a multidisciplinary international conference sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in April 2006. Discussions at this conference and the ensuing recommendations have been based upon recent, peer-reviewed scientific publications. However, there are very few TS studies that would qualify as guidance for evidence-based recommendations, and hence

The development of liquid chromatography with a commercially available cyano propyl stationary phase and a 100% water mobile phase is reported. Separations were performed at ambient temperature, simplifying instrumental requirements. Excellent separation efficiency using a water mobile phase was achieved, for example N=18 800, or 75 200 m−1, was obtained for resorcinol, at a retention factor of k′=4.88 (retention time of 9.55 min at 1 ml min−1 for a 25 cm×4.6 mm i.d. column, packed with 5 μm diameter particles with the cyano propyl stationary phase). A separation via reversed phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) with a 100% water mobile phase of six phenols and related compounds was compared to a separation of the same compounds by traditional RP-LC, using octadecylsilane (ODS), i.e. C18, bound to silica and an aqueous mobile phase modified with acetonitrile. Nearly identical analysis time was achieved for the separation of six phenols and related compounds using the cyano propyl stationary phase with a 100% water mobile phase, as compared to traditional RP-LC requiring a relatively large fraction of organic solvent modifier in the mobile phase (25% acetonitrile:75% water). Additional understanding of the retention mechanism with the 100% water mobile phase was obtained by relating measured retention factors of aliphatic alcohols, phenols and related compounds, and chlorinated hydrocarbons to their octanol:water partition coefficients. The retention mechanism is found to be consistent with a RP-LC mechanism coupled with an additional retention effect due to residual hydroxyl groups on the cyano propyl stationary phase. Advantages due to a 100% water mobile phase for the chemical analysis of alcohol mixtures and chlorinated hydrocarbons are reported. By placing an absorbance detector in-series and preceding a novel drop interface to a flame ionization detector (FID), selective detection of a separated mixture of phenols and related compounds and aliphatic alcohols is achieved. The compound class of aliphatic alcohols is selectively and sensitively detected by the drop interface/FID, and the phenols and related compounds are selectively and sensitively detected by absorbance detection at 200 nm. The separation and detection of chlorinated hydrocarbons in a water sample matrix further illustrated the advantages of this methodology. The sensitivity and selectivity of the FID signal for the chlorinated hydrocarbons are significantly better than absorbance detection, even at 200 nm. This methodology is well suited to continuous and automated monitoring of water samples. The applicability of samples initially in an organic solvent matrix is explored, since an organic sample matrix may effect retention and efficiency. Separations in acetonitrile and isopropyl alcohol sample matrices compared well to separations with a water sample matrix.

We used 50 kHz sonar data to estimate natural hydrocarbon emission rates from the 18 km2 marine seep field offshore from Coal Oil Point, Santa Barbara, California. The hydrocarbon gas emission rate is 1.7 ± 0.3 × 105 m3 d−1 (including gas captured by a subsea seep containment device) and the associated oil emission rate is 1.6 ± 0.2 × 104 Ld−1 (100 barrels d−1). The nonmethane hydrocarbon emission rate from the gas seepage is 35±7 td−1 and a large source of air pollution in Santa Barbara County. Our estimate is equal to twice the emission rate from all the on-road vehicle traffic in the county. Our estimated methane emission rate for the Coal Oil Point seeps (80±12 td−1) is 4 times higher than previous estimates. The most intense areas of seepage correspond to structural culminations along anticlinal axes. Seep locations are mostly unchanged from those documented in 1946, 1953, and 1973. An exception is the seepage field that once existed near offshore oil platform Holly. A reduction in seepage within a 1 km radius around this offshore platform is correlated with reduced reservoir pressure beneath the natural seeps due to oil production. Our findings suggest that global emissions of methane from natural marine seepage have been underestimated and may be decreasing because of oil production.

Mo2C/Al2O3and Mo2N/Al2O3catalysts have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, pulsed chemisorption (CO and O2) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) measurements. Thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activities were measured for alumina-supported Mo carbide and nitride catalysts as well as a sulfided Mo/Al2O3catalyst, all with a 10 wt% Mo loading. The HDS activities (μmol Th/mol Mo/s) of the catalysts after 24 h at 693 K were found to increase according to the trend sulfided Mo < γ-Mo2N < β-Mo2C, and provide further evidence that carbide and nitride catalysts have the potential to replace sulfided Mo catalysts in commercial HDS reactors. X-ray diffraction analysis of fresh and tested 30 wt% Mo2C/Al2O3and Mo2N/Al2O3catalysts indicates that the bulk structure of the carbide (β-Mo2C) and nitride (γ-Mo2N) particles is retained, while IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO indicates that the surface of the carbide and nitride particles becomes sulfided under reaction conditions. A model is proposed for the structure of the active catalytic surface of the alumina-supported Mo carbide and nitride catalysts in which a thin layer of highly dispersed sulfided Mo is present on the surfaces of the carbide and nitride particles.

In this study an all-male population of 256 U.S. Army basic trainees and 98 armor officer basic course students were surveyed concerning extent of use, knowledge of, and factors contributing to the use of smokeless tobacco (ST). The survey was administered at a dental clinic at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The data were analyzed using the SPSS computer software program. Results showed that more than 17% of this population were either occasional or regular users of ST. Nearly 24% had tried ST and more than 9% were former users. Exactly one-half had not tried ST. A typical user was white, had started ST use at age 14, had used it for 4 years, and was most likely to use snuff or dip. Higher educational level achieved was associated with increased likelihood of ST use. Nearly 22% of college graduates used ST, whereas only 15.3% of high school graduates or those with some college were users. Knowledge about the potential health effects of ST was generally high or moderately high, except for its ability to cause hypertension. This was true for both high school and college graduates, although college graduates were somewhat more informed. Few in this population had a personal attitude of approval toward ST use, and very few perceived that either their parents or their superiors in the military approved of ST use. Perceived attitude of approval was highest from friends and peers. The principle reasons for starting ST use were use by friends and curiosity about taste and effects. Influence from public figures, such as athletes, and from advertising was minimal. Enjoyment of flavor and taste was found to be the main reason for continued ST use. Health professionals were identified by the majority of respondents as the single most important information source on ST. Relatively few (27%), however, stated that their dentist or hygienist had ever discussed ST with them.

The adsorption of thiophene (C4H4S) on γ-Al2O3 has been investigated in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) using infrared (IR) spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). Following thiophene adsorption onto γ-Al2O3 at 130 K, TPD reveals two peaks with maximum rates of desorption at 175 and ∼220 K. The former peak is assigned to desorption of multilayer thiophene while the latter peak is assigned to desorption of weakly chemisorbed thiophene from the alumina surface. IR spectroscopy of adsorbed thiophene at submonolayer coverages provides further evidence that thiophene interacts only weakly with the alumina support; no decomposition of the thiophene overlayer is observed upon heating to 600 K under UHV conditions or a partial pressure of thiophene of 3.0 Torr. Three kinds of adsorbed thiophene species exist on the alumina surface at saturation coverage: one in which thiophene interacts with hydroxyl groups, presumably via hydrogen bonding, a second in which thiophene is coordinated via its sulfur atom ...

An 82-year-old Caucasian woman had a long-standing history of recurrent Paget’s disease of the right perianal region that was documented by multiple skin biopsies. Histological examination of a skin biopsy from an erythematous raised right perianal area revealed large rounded cells with ample pale staining cytoplasm scattered throughout the epidermis in multifocal nests and a flattened basal layer. A second lesion showed tongues of basaloid cells with peripheral palisading in continuity with the undersurface of the epidermis at multiple points. The individual tumor nests had cytoplasmic melanization and slit-like stromal separation. The tumor cells in the epidermis showed positive immunoreactivity for carcinoembryonic antigen while the basaloid cells were negative. A diagnosis of combined vulvar Paget’s disease and basal cell carcinoma of an infundibulocystic type was rendered. Concurrent involvement of the same area by Paget’s disease and Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has been reported only once. Here we report a second case of BCC concurrent with vulvar Paget’s disease.

Repair of rat craniotomy defects, 8 mm in diameter, was compared with that of defects treated with either rat insoluble collagenous bone matrix (ICBM) or partially purified bovine osteogenin, a bone-inductive protein, reconstituted with ICBM (OG/ICBM). Repair of all defects was similar histologically throughout the first 3 days, characterized by acute, then chronic inflammation and granulation tissue formation. In defects treated with OG/ICBM, cartilage and osteoblasts were present at day 5. By day 9, cartilage and osteoid production were active. New bone showed hematopoietic tissue by day 11; a complete bone bridge was established by day 21. By day 42, fatty marrow was present. Defects treated with ICBM alone showed islands of cartilage and bone embedded in connective tissue at day 9, which reached peak maturity by day 14. In these and in untreated defects, significant osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity, located primarily at the margins of the defects, subsided by day 28. Untreated defects gradually filed in with fibrous connective tissue which matured throughout 156 days. Radiopacity, quantified by computerized image analysis, increased significantly between days 9 and 11 in OG/ICBM-treated defects, and remained greater (P < 0.05) than that of the ICBM-treated defects. There was a more gradual increase in radiopacity in ICBM-treated defects. The sequence of morphologic events during calvarial bone regeneration was very similar to that described previously for heterotopic bone formation induced by demineralized bone matrix.
