Abstract Leaf litter is an important component related to nutrient cycling and conservation of soil biodiversity. In this context, the objective of our study was to investigate the relationship between soil and leaf litter in different forest communities in sub-regions of the Pantanal (Nhecolândia and Abobral/Miranda). To this end, we collected soil and leaf litter samples from 152 sample plots divided in physiognomies regionally called as Cordilheira, Capão, Murundu, Corixo and Cambará/Canjiqueira forest. In the laboratory, analytical determinations were conducted for 22 soil attributes and 11 elements of the chemical composition of the leaf litter. The forest communities showed a great well-defined edaphic gradient encompassing environments with high natural fertility soils (Capão and Cordilheira Abobral/Miranda), acidic soils with a high proportion of soluble Al3+ (Cambará/Canjiqueira, and Corixo), and poorly developed soils with a predominantly sandy texture (Nhecolândia region, Cordilheira and Murundu). Soil attributes are significantly related to the chemical composition of litter, as indicated by correlations between N, P, Ca, Mg, Mn and the C/N ratio with physical, chemical and soil organic matter attributes. This study revealed the interaction of soils with the chemical composition of litter, constituting an ecosystem service, in forest communities in the Brazilian Pantanal.

The following report describes a case of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in an adult patient, presenting atypical manifestations due to its clinical exuberance. The patient, a 26-year-old physician, reported the onset of fever and odynophagia followed on the 2nd day by vesicles and enanthema on the soft palate, associated with erythematous papules in the perioral and nasal dorsum regions, extending to the hands and feet. The lesions progressed in severity and number over the days, exhibiting unusual characteristics. Onychomadesis also manifested in the nails after the 6th week. The diagnostic investigation included a series of serologies, highlighting reactivity to Coxsackievirus. A biopsy of a papulovesicular lesion revealed the presence of keratinocyte necrosis and inflammatory reaction in the dermis. The discussion encompasses the pathogenesis of HFMD, its atypical manifestations in adults, and the importance of diagnostic elucidation. This case report contributes to understanding the clinical variations of HFMD in adults, emphasizing the need to consider this entity even outside the predominant age group.

The authors present a case of congenital triangular alopecia (CTA), also known as temporal triangular alopecia, and debate its clinical presentation and diagnostic considerations. The patient, a 15-year-old male without comorbidities, exhibited left temporal alopecia since birth, seeking medical attention due to esthetic concerns. Dermatological examination revealed a well-defined area of alopecia, and trichoscopy exhibited vellus hairs of varying lengths, surrounded by terminal follicles and white hairs which are characteristic findings of the disease. The discussion explores the possible congenital nature of CTA, its clinical and trichoscopic features, histopathological characteristics, and the necessity for accurate differential diagnosis.

Sporotrichosis is a subacute to chronic mycosis caused by species of the genus Sporothrix. While the lymphocutaneous form predominates in most cases, immunocompromised individuals may present with disseminated variants. It is more prevalent in adults and rare in infants, with poorly studied risk factors and epidemiological aspects in this age group. We describe a case of sporotrichosis infection in a 9-month-old child, presenting with two progressively growing nodules, soft in consistency, located in the right cervical and pre-auricular regions, associated with a decline in general condition and fever over a month’s duration. Despite multiple oral antibiotics, there was no lesional improvement. Aspiration of one of the nodules, and culture of the secretion revealed Sporothrix. The patient was then treated with oral itraconazole, leading to regression of the lesions within 2 months. The identification of the transmission agent in this case was not possible. This report aims to broaden the understanding of sporotrichosis manifestation in infants and to provide valuable insights for the enhancement of specific preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies for this age group of dermatological patients.

Antibiotic resistance, particularly against fluoroquinolones and macrolides, has emerged globally among thermophilic Campylobacters (Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli), giving rise to concerns about the efficacy of antibiotic treatment of these bacteria. Thus, developing new antibacterials with excellent activity is important. Isatin (IST) and its derivatives have exhibited promising antibacterial activities in several pathogenic bacteria. However, its activity against Campylobacter is unknown. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial activity of isatin against 29-Campylobacter strains (C. jejuni-17 and C. coli-12) and investigate the effects at the cellular level. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of isatin were between Campylobacter strains. Most strains presented with MIC = 8.0 µg/mL (76%). The minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) was determined to be 16.0 µg/mL for 72% of the Campylobacter strains tested. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value for isatin was 125.63 µg/mL on the MRC-5 normal cell line, suggesting that isatin can be considered a safe substance in terms of cytotoxicity. In this study, we demonstrated the potential of isatin based on its low toxicity and effectiveness in vitro against antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter strains, which indicates that this compound could be an attractive candidate for future use in multidrug-resistant Campylobacter treatment.

The pre-cleaning of reusable medical devices is essential for successful cleaning, as it prevents biofilm formation that can compromise disinfection and sterilization. This study aimed to reflect on the recommendations regarding the pre-cleaning of reusable medical devices carried out in care units, such as wards, based on recommendations from guidelines/standards related to this important step in reusable medical device reprocessing. However, recommendations for pre-cleaning in care units are not unanimous and contrast with detailed recommendations on reusable medical device reprocessing in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD). This topic is an unresolved issue, strongly related to patient and worker safety, which points to the lack of investigations to provide indicators of best practice and highlights the need for shared responsibility management between care units and CSSD.

Root cause analysis (RCA) methodologies have been used worldwide to help preventing incidental events from recurring, contributing to avoid losses and worker injuries. A structured RCA methodology shall work as an efficient problem solving tool, facilitating proactive communication, documenting the most important and systemic causes of incidental events and also providing effective solutions as part of the decision decisionmaking process. From the industrial perspective, a RCA process shall improve the lessons learned from these incidental events for plant operation and also feedback engineering design, besides increasing plant operation reliability. This paper presents a practical experience using a systematic and structured RCA methodology on two actual incidental cases from an international air separation industry that demonstrate the mentioned benefits of this approach on plant operation reliability and engineering design improvement.

Rhizophora mangle is commonly used in traditional medicine to treat infections, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. This study aimed to analyze the phytochemical profile of the methanolic extract of R. mangle leaves (MELRm) and evaluate its in vitro schistosomicidal activity against Schistosoma mansoni as well as its cytotoxicity. Plant material was collected in Itamaracá City, Pernambuco, Brazil. The extract was analyzed using UV/Vis spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The motility, mortality, and cell viability of adult worms were assessed in a schistosomicidal assay, while cytotoxicity was evaluated through a colorimetric assay with MTT on RAW 264.7 cells. The primary compounds identified in MELRm were phenolic compounds. In the schistosomicidal assay, all concentrations of MELRs induced changes in the motility of adult worms. At a concentration of 400 μg/mL, MELRs resulted in 56.25% mortality after 72 h of incubation. After 120 h, mortality rates of 75%, 62.5%, and 50% were observed at MELRm concentrations of 400, 200, and 100 μg/mL, respectively. No eggs were detected at any MELRm concentration. MELRs did not show cytotoxicity towards RAW 264.7 cells at the concentrations tested. These results indicate that MELRs demonstrate schistosomicidal activity in vitro, suggesting they are promising candidates for in vivo studies.

Abstract This study investigates the effects of including patients’ clinical information on the performance of deep learning (DL) classifiers for disease location in chest X-ray images. Although current classifiers achieve high performance using chest X-ray images alone, consultations with practicing radiologists indicate that clinical data is highly informative and essential for interpreting medical images and making proper diagnoses. In this work, we propose a novel architecture consisting of two fusion methods that enable the model to simultaneously process patients’ clinical data (structured data) and chest X-rays (image data). Since these data modalities are in different dimensional spaces, we propose a spatial arrangement strategy, spatialization, to facilitate the multimodal learning process in a Mask R-CNN model. We performed an extensive experimental evaluation using MIMIC-Eye, a dataset comprising different modalities: MIMIC-CXR (chest X-ray images), MIMIC IV-ED (patients’ clinical data), and REFLACX (annotations of disease locations in chest X-rays). Results show that incorporating patients’ clinical data in a DL model together with the proposed fusion methods improves the disease localization in chest X-rays by 12% in terms of Average Precision compared to a standard Mask R-CNN using chest X-rays alone. Further ablation studies also emphasize the importance of multimodal DL architectures and the incorporation of patients’ clinical data in disease localization. Abstract Blue mussels from the genus Mytilus are an abundant component of the benthic community, found in the high latitude habitats. These foundation species are relevant to the aquaculture industry, with over 2 million tonnes produced globally each year. Mussels withstand a wide range of environmental conditions and species from the Mytilus edulis complex readily hybridize in regions where their distributions overlap. Significant effort has been made to investigate the consequences of environmental stress on mussel physiology, reproductive isolation, and local adaptation. Yet our understanding on the genomic mechanisms underlying such processes remains limited. In this study, we developed a multi species medium‐density 60 K SNP‐array including four species of the Mytilus genus. SNPs included in the platform were called from 138 mussels from 23 globally distributed mussel populations, sequenced using a whole‐genome low coverage approach. The array contains polymorphic SNPs which capture the genetic diversity present in mussel populations thriving across a gradient of environmental conditions (~59 K SNPs) and a set of published and validated SNPs informative for species identification and for diagnosis of transmissible cancer (610 SNPs). The array will allow the consistent genotyping of individuals, facilitating the investigation of ecological and evolutionary processes in these taxa. The applications of this array extend to shellfish aquaculture, contributing to the optimization of this industry via genomic selection of blue mussels, parentage assignment, inbreeding assessment and traceability. Further applications such as genome wide association studies (GWAS) for key production traits and those related to environmental resilience are especially relevant to safeguard aquaculture production under climate change.

This paper presents a statistical approach to identify the underlying roughness characteristics in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) intensity data. The physical modeling of this kind of data allows the use of the Gamma distribution in the presence of fully developed speckle, i.e., when there are infinitely many independent backscatterers per resolution cell, and none dominates the return. Such areas are often called “homogeneous” or “textureless” regions. The GI0 distribution is also a widely accepted law for heterogeneous and extremely heterogeneous regions, i.e., areas where the fully developed speckle hypotheses do not hold. We propose three test statistics to distinguish between homogeneous and inhomogeneous regions, i.e., between gamma and GI0 distributed data, both with a known number of looks. The first test statistic uses a bootstrapped non-parametric estimator of Shannon entropy, providing a robust assessment in uncertain distributional assumptions. The second test uses the classical coefficient of variation (CV). The third test uses an alternative form of estimating the CV based on the ratio of the mean absolute deviation from the median to the median. We apply our test statistic to create maps of p-values for the homogeneity hypothesis. Finally, we show that our proposal, the entropy-based test, outperforms existing methods, such as the classical CV and its alternative variant, in identifying heterogeneity when applied to both simulated and actual data.

The properties of babassu (Attalea speciosa.) fiber was for the first time investigated for potential engineering application such as reinforcement for matrix composites. The diameter distribution of babassu fibers was analyzed and found to be associated with significant variation in fiber density and mechanical properties. Additionally, thermogravimetric and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) analyses were performed. The studied Weibull statistical method was used to analyze the acquired data. The surface morphology of the fibers was studied by scanning electron microscopy. From the diameter ranges, it was possible to confirm that the thinner fibers have higher values of density and mechanical properties, which was attributed to their lower presence of defects. The diameter range was found between of 0.18 and 0.47 mm, and the corresponding densities were 0.79 and 0.27 g/cm³ respectively. Furthermore, the maximum tensile strength found was 100.76 MPa with an elastic modulus of 6.33 GPa and an elongation of 2.98%. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed a three-step mass loss, the main one being the second where the fiber loses 69% of the mass at a temperature of 382 °C. The FTIR analysis showed a similarity with the bands generally found in the literature for natural lignocellulosic fibers.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cottonseed hull (CH) in the diets of rams on intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance, ingestive behaviour, and blood metabolites. Twenty males, uncastrated with an average body weight of 29.08 ± 4.18 kg, were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatment diets and five replicates. The diet contained a forage to concentrate ratio of 50 : 50 (ground corn, soybean meal, corn silage, and CH), and the experimental treatments were inclusion of 0, 10, 20, and 30% CH (dry matter basis). Inclusion of CH linearly increased water intake, effective intake of ethereal extract and non-fibrous carbohydrates, and crude protein digestibility. Dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility, nitrogen faecal losses, and nitrogen balance reduced linearly with CH inclusion in the diet. Inclusion of CH in rams’ diet reduces intake, nutrient digestibility, and intake and rumination efficiencies. Thus, it is not recommended to add this by-product to the diet of high-performance rams, but for nurture that does not aim at high performance, inclusion of up to 5% of this by-product is recommended.

Abstract Effective vaccination against coronavirus mitigates the risk of hospitalisation and mortality; however, it is unclear whether vaccination status influences long COVID symptoms in patients who require hospitalisation. The available evidence is limited to outpatients with mild disease. Here, we evaluated 412 patients (age: 60 ± 16 years, 65% males) consecutively admitted to two Hospitals in Brazil due to confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Compared with patients with complete vaccination (n = 185) before infection or hospitalisation, those with no or incomplete vaccination (n = 227) were younger and had a lower frequency of several comorbidities. Data during hospitalisation revealed that the no or incomplete vaccination group required more admissions to the intensive care unit (ICU), used more corticosteroids, and had higher rates of pulmonary embolism or deep venous thrombosis than the complete vaccination group. Ninety days after hospital discharge, patients with no or incomplete vaccination presented a higher frequency of symptoms (≥ 1) than patients with complete vaccination (40 vs. 27%; p = 0.013). After adjusting for confounders, no or incomplete vaccination (odds ratio [OR] 1.819; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.175–2.815), female sex (OR 2.435; 95% CI 1.575–3.764) and ICU admission during hospitalisation (OR 1.697; 95% CI 1.062–2.712) were independently associated with ≥ 1 symptom 90 days after hospital discharge. In conclusion, even in patients with severe COVID-19, vaccination mitigates the probability of long COVID symptoms.

The constant concern about environmental issues has led to the growth of researches about eco-friendly materials. Among them, the natural lignocellulosic fibers have already presented their potential in place of petroleum-based synthetics. However, a relevant number of studies still have to deal with their disadvantages, such as the weak bond on the matrices for a composite performance and limited thermal performance. Thus, the present study analyzes a combination of alkaline treatment and graphene oxide coating in hemp fibers, an NLF applied in several products but with few investigations in engineering applications. The hemp fibers were thermally characterized with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The GO-coating was evidenced by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Changes in crystallinity were presented by X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed an increase of about 4% to 11% of the crystallinity after the alkaline treatment. The thermal stability rose about 13°C in the 10 wt% NaOH-treated and GO-coated fibers, and a change of about 3.5°C was detected for the glass transition temperature. The GO-coating effect was also evidenced by changes in Raman spectra and FTIR curves and was visually detected in the scanning electron microscope (SEM).

The use of the tracer 18F-fluoro-3'-deoxy-3'-L-fluorothymidine ([18F]FLT) in positron emission tomography (PET) has been shown to be an effective tool for assessing tumor aggressiveness and early response to therapy. In this study, we investigated the applicability of [18F]FLT/PET to study the antitumor and anti–lung metastatic effects of rosmarinic acid (RA) in highly invasive breast cancer. 4T1 mammary carcinoma cells were injected into the flank of female Balb/c mice. The animals were treated daily with RA until day 21 after the inoculation of tumor cells. [18F]FLT/PET imaging was used to evaluate the response of primary tumors and lung metastases to RA treatment. PET Images showed a decreased [18F]FLT uptake in the lungs of mice after RA treatment. The antitumor effect of RA appears to be related to the inhibition of cell migration, cell proliferation, and blood vessel formation in the primary tumor. Furthermore, the inflammatory response was modulated by RA, which reduced the accumulation of mast cells and neutrophils in the primary tumor and of macrophages in the lungs. In conclusion, [18F]FLT/PET demonstrates the antitumor and antimetastatic effects of RA in a 4T1 breast tumor model. Furthermore, the findings suggest that RA modulates tumor angiogenesis and inflammation, resulting in antitumor and antimetastatic effects in a 4T1 breast carcinoma model.

L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA)-induced dyskinesia is a side effect of Parkinson's disease treatment and it is characterized by atypical involuntary movements. A link between neuroinflammation and L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia has been documented. Hydrogen gas (H2) has neuroprotective effects in Parkinson's disease models and has a major anti-inflammatory effect. Our objective is to test the hypothesis that H2 inhalation reduces L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia. 15 days after 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of dopaminergic neurons were made (microinjection into the medial forebrain bundle), chronic L-DOPA treatment (15 days) was performed. Rats were exposed to H2 (2% gas mixture, 1 h) or air (controls) before L-DOPA injection. Abnormal involuntary movements and locomotor activity were conducted. Striatal microglia and astrocyte was analyzed and striatal and plasma samples for cytokines evaluation were collected after the abnormal involuntary movements analysis. H2 inhalation attenuated L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia. The gas therapy did not impair the improvement of locomotor activity achieved by L-DOPA treatment. H2 inhalation reduced activated microglia in the lesioned striatum, which is consistent with the observed reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines levels. Display of abnormal involuntary movements was positively correlated with plasma IL-1β and striatal TNF-α levels and negatively correlated with striatal IL-10 levels. Prophylactic H2 inhalation decreases abnormal involuntary movements in a preclinical L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia model. The H2 antidyskinetic effect was associated with decreased striatal and peripheral inflammation. This finding has a translational importance to L-DOPA-treated parkinsonian patients' well-being.

Patients with severe COVID-19 develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) that may progress to cytokine storm syndrome, organ dysfunction, and death. Considering that complement component 5a (C5a), through its cellular receptor C5aR1, has potent proinflammatory actions and plays immunopathological roles in inflammatory diseases, we investigated whether the C5a/C5aR1 pathway could be involved in COVID-19 pathophysiology. C5a/C5aR1 signaling increased locally in the lung, especially in neutrophils of critically ill patients with COVID-19 compared with patients with influenza infection, as well as in the lung tissue of K18-hACE2 Tg mice (Tg mice) infected with SARS-CoV-2. Genetic and pharmacological inhibition of C5aR1 signaling ameliorated lung immunopathology in Tg-infected mice. Mechanistically, we found that C5aR1 signaling drives neutrophil extracellular traps-dependent (NETs-dependent) immunopathology. These data confirm the immunopathological role of C5a/C5aR1 signaling in COVID-19 and indicate that antagonists of C5aR1 could be useful for COVID-19 treatment.

Resumo Fundamento A maioria da evidência sobre o impacto da síndrome COVID pós-aguda (PACS, do inglês, post-acute COVID-19 syndrome) descreve sintomas individuais sem correlacioná-los com exames de imagens. Objetivos Avaliar sintomas cardiopulmonares, seus preditores e imagens relacionadas em pacientes com COVID-19 após alta hospitalar. Métodos Pacientes consecutivos, que sobreviveram à COVID-19, foram contatados 90 dias após a alta hospitalar. A equipe de desfechos clínicos (cega quanto aos dados durante a internação) elaborou um questionário estruturado avaliando sintomas e estado clínico. Uma análise multivariada foi realizada abordando a evolução da COVID-19, comorbidades, ansiedade, depressão, e estresse pós-traumático durante a internação, e reabilitação cardíaca após a alta. O nível de significância usado nas análises foi de 5%. Resultados Foram incluídos 480 pacientes (idade 59±14 anos, 67,5% do sexo masculino) que receberam alta hospitalar por COVID-19; 22,3% necessitaram de ventilação mecânica. A prevalência de pacientes com sintomas cardiopulmonares relacionados à PACS (dispneia, cansaço/fadiga, tosse e desconforto no peito) foi de 16,3%. Vários parâmetros de tomografia computadorizada do tórax e de ecocardiograma foram similares entre os pacientes com e sem sintomas cardiopulmonares. A análise multivariada mostrou que sintomas cardiopulmonares foram relacionados de maneira independente com sexo feminino (OR 3,023; IC95% 1,319-6,929), trombose venosa profunda durante a internação (OR 13,689; IC95% 1,069-175,304), nível elevado de troponina (OR 1,355; IC95% 1,048-1,751) e de proteína C reativa durante a internação (OR 1,060; IC95% 1,023-1,097) e depressão (OR 6,110; IC95% 2,254-16,558). Conclusão Os sintomas cardiopulmonares relacionados à PACS 90 dias após a alta hospitalar são comuns e multifatoriais. Além dos marcadores trombóticos, inflamatórios e de lesão miocárdica durante a internação, sexo feminino e depressão foram associados independentemente com sintomas cardiopulmonares relacionados à PACS. Esses resultados destacaram a necessidade de uma abordagem multifacetada direcionada a pacientes susceptíveis.

During nocturnal field expeditions in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, an unexpected bioluminescent fungus with reduced form was found. Based on morphological data, the taxon was first identified as belonging to the cyphelloid genus Maireina, but in our phylogenetic analyses, Maireina was recovered and confirmed as a paraphyletic group related to genera Merismodes and Cyphellopsis. Maireina filipendula, Ma. monacha, and Ma. subsphaerospora are herein transferred to Merismodes. Based upon morphological and molecular characters, the bioluminescent cyphelloid taxon is described as the new genus Eoscyphella, characterized by a vasiform to urceolate basidiomata, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores, being pigmented, weakly to densely encrusted external hyphae, regularly bi-spored basidia, unclamped hyphae, and an absence of both conspicuous long external hairs and hymenial cystidia. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS rDNA and LSU rDNA support the proposal of the new genus and confirm its position in Cyphellopsidaceae. Eoscyphella luciurceolata represents a new lineage of bioluminescent basidiomycetes with reduced forms.

Abstract Faraday and Kerr effects as well as the extraordinary optical transmission in a structure that combines magneto-optical and plasmonic properties are studied. The planar structure consists of four layers, namely, dielectric layer, metal strips, once again dieletric layer and magneto-optic one. The magneto-optical layer is magnetized by a DC magnetic field normal to it. Our numerical analysis shows that the Faraday and Kerr rotations in this structure can be increased by more than two times in comparison with the published results. This is achieved due to high Q-factor resonances in magneto-optic layer.

The neotropical monotypic genus Macrogenioglottus, described to enclose M. alipioi, is a forest leaf litter frog with a wide geographic distribution in eastern Brazil, despite being considered a rare species. Herein, we present some reproductive data of this species from a population of the north of the São Francisco River, Northeastern Brazil. We present information on the amplexus, egg clutch, advertisement, and release calls, along with a description of its larval development. Adults were observed only after heavy and continuous rains, in a temporary pond located inside the forest. Males call in chorus at the edge of the pond. The advertisement call consists of a pulsatile single note, with no substantial variation in relation to the other population of the species, but which promptly differs this genus from the remaining Odontophrynidae. The amplexus is axillary. One female deposited 298 pigmented eggs in a plastic bag. The tadpole reaches its larger size at Stage 39, being the largest tadpole within the family. At the end of metamorphosis, the froglet snout–vent length is equivalent to tadpole total length at stage 26–27, indicating substantial postmetamorphic growth until adulthood. Data on body size of males and females are also provided. The uniqueness of some larval traits and mainly on some call attributes supports the systematic distinction of Macrogenioglottus.
