1. Assessment of uncertainties for measurements of total near-normal emissivity of low-emissivity foils with an industrial emissometer

Abstract

The TIR100-2 emissometer (manufactured by Inglas GmbH & Co.KG) is an emissivity measurement device used by several producers of thermal insulation products for buildings and by some organizations certifying performance of insulation products. A comparison of emissivity measurements on low-emissivity foils involving different measurement techniques, including the TIR100-2 emissometer, gave widely dispersed results; the discrepancies were not explained. The metrological performance of the TIR100-2 emissometer and the uncertainties for measurement on reflective foils was not known, which could be detrimental to users. In order to quantify the performance of TIR100-2 devices for measurement of total near-normal emissivity of low-emissivity foils, the Laboratoire National de Métrologie et d'Essais (LNE) analyzed in detail the measuring principle and listed the associated assumptions and uncertainty sources. A TIR100-2 emissometer actually measures the reflectance and, for opaque materials, the emissivity is calculated from the measured reflectance. The parameters analyzed experimentally are the temperature stability and uniformity of the thermal radiation source, the emissivity of the radiation source, the response function linearity and the spectral sensitivity of the radiometric detection system measuring the reflected radiation, the size of the measurement area, and the measurement repeatability and reproducibility. A detailed uncertainty budget was established. The uncertainty sources taken into account are the uncertainties of the emissivities of the two calibrated standards used for calibration, the stability and uniformity of the radiation source temperature, the non-linearity and the spectral sensitivity of the radiometric detection system, the specific measurement condition related to the radiation source temperature, the uncertainties related to the temperatures of the standards and the sample, the noises on results, and the non-homogeneity in emissivity of the tested material. The combined measurement uncertainty was calculated for different types of reflective foils; the expanded uncertainty is around 0.03 for total near-normal emissivity measurements on smooth low-emissivity foils. A measurement campaign on five types of low-emissivity foils, involving four TIR100-2 emissometers, and a comparison to a primary reference setup at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) confirmed the uncertainties assessed.

Abstract

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has set up an additional measurement approach for the absolute calibration of the spectral responsivity of detectors in the near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range. This alternative method uses the radiation of a blackbody operating at about 1200 K with a precision aperture. The blackbody radiation can be calculated by Planck's law and is additionally spectrally selected by accurately characterized optical bandpass filters. Thus, a calibration of the spectral responsivity of a detector with respect to irradiance can be achieved at the bandpass wavelength of the applied transmission filters. If the aperture of the detector is known, the spectral responsivity can also be calculated with respect to radiant power. Thermopile detectors with known aperture size were calibrated in terms of their spectral responsivity with several bandpass filters in the spectral range between 1.5 µm up to 14 µm with relative standard measurement uncertainties between 5 % and 19 %. The obtained results are consistent with previous calibrations at PTB's national primary detector standard. Therefore, this additional measurement approach is a further validation of the existing primary method which is based on a cryogenic radiometer and extends the usable wavelength range.

3. Characterization, calibration and validation of an industrial emissometer

Abstract

We report on the radiometric characterization and calibration of the TIR 100-2 (INGLAS Produktions GmbH, 2019) industrial emissometer. This instrument is used for handheld, on-site directional total emissivity measurements in industrial applications, e.g., the measurement of the emissivity of highly reflective thermal insulation materials. The diameter of the measurement field is determined by two different methods. The emissometer is calibrated with three different sets of low- and high-emissivity reference samples. Each calibration is validated by comparing the results of the TIR 100-2 to directional total emissivity results of the Emissivity Measurement in Air Facility (EMAF) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Berlin. Finally, the hemispherical total emissivity of highly reflective thermal insulation materials is determined using the TIR 100-2 according to the European Standard EN 12898, and, again, the results are validated with results obtained at the EMAF.

Abstract

The deployment of the imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer GLORIA (Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere) on board a long-duration balloon for stratospheric research requires a blackbody for in-flight calibration in order to provide traceability to the International Temperature Scale (ITS-90) to ensure comparability with the results of other experiments and over time. GLORIA, which has been deployed onboard various research aircraft such as the Russian M55 Geophysica or the German HALO in the past, shall also be used for detailed atmospheric measurements in the stratosphere up to 40 km altitude. The instrument uses a two-dimensional detector array and an imaging optics with a large aperture diameter of 36 mm and an opening angle of 4.07°  ×  4.07° for infrared limb observations. To overfill the field of view (FOV) of the instrument, a large-area blackbody radiation sources (125 mm  ×  125 mm) is required for in-flight calibration.In order to meet the requirements regarding the scientific goals of the GLORIA missions, the radiance temperature of the blackbody calibration source has to be determined to better than 100 mK and the spatial temperature uniformity shall be better than 150 mK. As electrical resources on board a stratospheric balloon are very limited, the latent heat of the phase change of a eutectic material is utilized for temperature stabilization of the calibration source, such that the blackbody has a constant temperature of about −32 °C corresponding to a typical temperature observed in the stratosphere.The Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Research at the University of Wuppertal designed and manufactured a prototype of the large-area blackbody for in-flight calibration of an infrared interferometer deployed on board a long-duration balloon for stratospheric research. This newly developed calibration source was tested under lab conditions as well as in a climatic and environmental test chamber in order to verify its performance especially under flight conditions. At the PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt), the German national metrology institute, the spatial radiance distribution of the blackbody was determined and traceability to the International Temperature Scale (ITS-90) has been assured. In this paper the design and performance of the balloon-borne blackbody (BBB) is presented.

Abstract

Limb sounding instruments play an important role in the monitoring of climate trends, as they provide a good vertical resolution. Traceability to the International System of Units (SI) via onboard reference or transfer standards is needed to compare trend estimates from multiple instruments. This study investigates the required uncertainty of these radiation standards to properly resolve decadal trends of climate-relevant trace species like ozone, water vapor, and temperature distribution for the Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere (GLORIA). Temperature nonuniformities of the onboard reference blackbodies, used for radiometric calibration, have an impact on the calibration uncertainty. The propagation of these nonuniformities through the retrieval is analyzed. A threshold for the maximum tolerable uncertainty of the blackbody temperature is derived, so that climate trends can be significantly identified with GLORIA.

GLORIA (Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere) is an airborne, imaging, infrared Fourier transform spectrometer that applies the limb-imaging technique to perform trace gas and temperature measurements in the Earth's atmosphere with three-dimensional resolution. To ensure the traceability of these measurements to the International Temperature Scale and thereby to an absolute radiance scale, GLORIA carries an on-board calibration system. Basically, it consists of two identical large-area and high-emissivity infrared radiators, which can be continuously and independently operated at two adjustable temperatures in a range from −50 °C to 0 °C during flight. Here we describe the radiometric and thermometric characterization and calibration of the in-flight calibration system at the Reduced Background Calibration Facility of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. This was performed with a standard uncertainty of less than 110 mK. Extensive investigations of the system concerning its absolute radiation temperature and spectral radiance, its temperature homogeneity and its short- and long-term stability are discussed. The traceability chain of these measurements is presented.

Abstract

The Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere (GLORIA) is a prototype of an imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) for PREMIER, a former candidate mission for ESA's Earth Explorer 7. GLORIA is deployed on board various research aircraft such as the Russian M55 Geophysica or the German HALO. The instrument provides detailed infrared images of the Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere (UTLS) region, which plays a crucial role in the climate system. GLORIA uses a two-dimensional detector array for infrared limb observations in emission and therefore needs large-area blackbody radiation sources (126 mm × 126 mm) for calibration. In order to meet the highly demanding uncertainty requirements for the scientific objectives of the GLORIA missions and due to the sophisticated tomographic evaluation scheme, the spatial distribution of the radiance temperature of the blackbody calibration sources has to be determined with an uncertainty of about 0.1 K. Since GLORIA is exposed to the hostile environment of the UTLS with mutable low temperature and pressure, an in-flight calibration system has to be carefully designed to cope with those adverse circumstances. The GLORIA in-flight calibration system consists of two identical weight-optimised high-precision blackbody radiation sources, which are independently stabilised at two different temperatures. The two point calibration is in the range of the observed atmospheric infrared radiance emissions with 10 K below and 30 K above ambient temperature, respectively. Thermo-Electric Coolers are used to control the temperature of the blackbody radiation sources offering the advantage of avoiding cryogens and mechanical coolers. The design and performance of the GLORIA in-flight calibration system is presented. The blackbody calibration sources have been comprehensively characterised for their spatially (full aperture) and spectrally (7 to 13 μm) resolved radiation properties in terms of radiance temperatures traceable to the International Temperature Scale (ITS-90) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the national metrology institute of Germany.

19. P144 Impact of major medication discontinuation during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic on the risk of early relapse in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a French observational retrospective study

Abstract

Background The prevalence of nonadherence to major treatments and the subsequent adverse outcomes in IBD patients during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic remain scarce. Aim to investigate the risk of early disease relapse in a cohort of IBD patients under immunosuppressants and/or biologics who decided themselves to discontinue their IBD-related major treatments without previous medical advice during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Methods All consecutive patients with inactive IBD under immunosuppressants and/or biologics who acknowledged having withdrawn their major therapy for IBD without previous medical advice during the first wave of COVID-19 (from March 2020 to December 2020) were enrolled. The primary endpoint was the survival rate without disease relapse. Kaplan-Meier curves were plotted for time from inclusion to IBD relapse and a logistic regression model with uni- and multivariate analyses was performed to identify predictors of relapse after drug discontinuation. Results During the study period, among the 862 IBD patients followed as outpatients either treated with infliximab or vedolizumab (outpatient clinics n= 368) or treated with oral azathioprine, adalimumab, golimumab or ustekinumab alone or in combination (n= 494), 54 patients (6.2 %) (42 CD, 12 UC, 28 F, median age 36 years) who had discontinued themselves their IBD-related major therapy without previous medical advice were included. The median duration of drug withdrawal was 7.0 weeks (range 2-24) and the median time to relapse was 9.0 weeks (range 4-20). The most treatments withdrawn were adalimumab (n=19), ustekinumab (n=19), azathioprine (n= 12), golimumab (n=1) and a lesser degree infliximab (n=7) eand vedolizumab (n=6). During the median follow-up period of 24 weeks (range 5-42), 22 out of 54 patients (40.7 %) who discontinued their IBD treatment experienced a relapse in whom 6 requiring administration of oral steroids, 4 hospitalization and 2 IBD-related surgery. By univariate analysis, past IBD related surgery was identified as the only predictor of disease relapse after drug withdrawal (OR=3.3 CI 95 % [1.08-10.38]. Conclusion In IBD patients, major treatment discontinuation by the patients themselves without medical advices during the first wave of pandemic Covid-19 including the lockdown was associated with a substantial risk of disease relapse occurring in around 4 out of 10 patients and subsequent further risk of need for steroids, hospitalization and surgery. Strategies targeting the adherence to therapy and patient’s informations about the real risks leading to drug discontinuation are of paramount interest, especially during health crisis to minimize such issues.

Abstract

Multi-site MRI datasets are crucial for big data research. However, neuroimaging studies must face the batch effect. Here, we propose an approach that uses the predictive probabilities provided by Gaussian processes (GPs) to harmonize clinical-based studies. A multi-site dataset of 216 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and 87 healthy subjects (HS) was used. We performed a site GP classification using MRI data. The outcomes estimated from this classification, redefined like Weighted HARMonization PArameters (WHARMPA), were used as regressors in two different clinical studies: A PD versus HS machine learning classification using GP, and a VBM comparison (FWE-p < .05, k = 100). Same studies were also conducted using conventional Boolean site covariates, and without information about site belonging. The results from site GP classification provided high scores, balanced accuracy (BAC) was 98.39% for grey matter images. PD versus HS classification performed better when the WHARMPA were used to harmonize (BAC = 78.60%; AUC = 0.90) than when using the Boolean site information (BAC = 56.31%; AUC = 0.71) and without it (BAC = 57.22%; AUC = 0.73). The VBM analysis harmonized using WHARMPA provided larger and more statistically robust clusters in regions previously reported in PD than when the Boolean site covariates or no corrections were added to the model. In conclusion, WHARMPA might encode global site-effects quantitatively and allow the harmonization of data. This method is user-friendly and provides a powerful solution, without complex implementations, to clean the analyses by removing variability associated with the differences between sites.

Metabolomics is a valuable approach used to acquire comprehensive information about the set of metabolites in a cell or tissue, enabling a functional screen of the cellular activities in biological systems. Although metabolomics provides a more immediate and dynamic picture of phenotypes in comparison to the other omics, it is also the most complicated to measure because no single analytical technology can capture the extraordinary complexity of metabolite diversity in terms of structure and physical properties. Metabolomics has been extensively employed for a wide range of applications in plant science, which will be described in detail in this chapter. Among them, metabolomics is used for discriminating patterns of plant responses to genetic and environmental perturbations, as diagnostics and prediction tool to elucidate the function of genes for important and complex agronomic traits in crop species, and flux measurements are used to dissect the structure and regulatory properties of metabolic networks.

Abstract

Significant progress has been made over the past years in the understanding of Earth’s climate; however, there are still uncertainties in the modelling of atmospheric radiative processes. The main radiative processes relevant for climatological models are related to atmospheric water vapour, clouds, and surface emissivity across the full thermal infrared spectrum. Whilst the mid-infrared outgoing radiation is currently measured from space (e.g. IASI), there is a lack of spectrally resolved measurements over a significant portion of Earth’s thermal emission in the Far-InfraRed (FIR) i.e. between 100 and 667 cm-1 (15-100 micron). FORUM (Far-infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring) has been selected as the ESA’s ninth Earth Explorer mission in September 2019. FORUM aims at measuring the Earth’s Top-Of-Atmosphere emission spectrum from 100 to 1600 cm-¹ (i.e. 6.25 to 100 μm). Two independent instrument concepts, based on a Fourier Transform Spectrometer, have been thoroughly studied in Phase A preparatory activities, including the development of a breadboard of the interferometer. In addition, critical technologies have been identified and subjected to comprehensive breadboard studies in order to mitigate development risks and to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL). This has led to the development and characterisation of several beamsplitter candidates, the measurement of the emissivity of the black coating for the on-board blackbody, the verification of noise and responsivity performance of pyroelectric detectors and the characterisation of the interferometer mechanism.

Abstract

Research in the field of teaching, particularly in the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), has a positive impact on understanding the modus operandi of education professionals at the Elementary and High School levels in the teaching of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computing. The development of STEMs from aspects of non-formal education or via the use of non-formal science teaching spaces is extremely important to complement the traditional curriculum, helping teachers and education professionals to motivate students in relation to STEMs. In a more general way, moreover, it is observed that the theme of non-formal education directly affects the way of carrying out scientific dissemination and, in particular, popularizing science in socially fragile environments. Non-formal education and non-formal science spaces thus emerge as fertile laboratories for the development of formal education itself, complementing it. In this sense, non-formal spaces such as scientific museums and events such as science fairs are defined, characterized and exemplified. A pesquisa na área de ensino, em particular no ensino de Ciência, Tecnologia, Engenharia e Matemática (CTEM), repercute positivamente para compreender o modus operandi de profissionais da educação, dos níveis Fundamental e Médio, no ensino de Física, Química, Matemática e Computação. O desenvolvimento das CTEMs a partir de aspectos da educação não formal ou via uso de espaços não formais de ensino de ciências são extremamente importantes para complementar o currículo tradicional, auxiliando o professor e profissionais da educação para a motivação dos alunos em relação às CTEMs. De uma forma mais geral, outrossim, observa-se que o tema da educação não formal afeta diretamente o modo de se realizar divulgação científica e, em especial, popularizar a ciência em meios socialmente fragilizados. A educação não formal e os espaços não formais de ciências despontam, dessa forma, como laboratórios férteis para o desenvolvimento do próprio ensino formal, complementando-o. Nesse sentido, espaços não formais como museus científicos e eventos como as feiras de ciência são definidos, caracterizados e exemplificados.

Abstract

Resumen: Introducción y objetivo: El fibroxantoma atípico (FXA) y el sarcoma pleomórfico dérmico (SPD) son neoplasias de origen mesenquimal poco frecuentes. Debido a la baja incidencia del SPD y a una nomenclatura históricamente confusa existe poca información acerca de la verdadera agresividad de este tumor. Realizamos el presente estudio con el objetivo de identificar qué características clínicas y/o histológicas del SPD son predictoras de riesgo de recidiva. Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of the optimal design of fibers orientation in a composite specimen with the objective to minimize the displacement. The composite specimen considered is within the scope of aerospace and mechanical applications. The objective function associated with the composite design is computed based on a static analysis of a finite element solid model, which allows one to define (or control) the fibers orientation. The recent global and local optimization using direct search methods (GLODS) is used for the optimization process. To validate and compare the numerical and optimized results, the specimens were manufactured and tested experimentally. The orientation of the layers that minimize the maximum displacement is achieved through the computational interaction of the optimization program, GLODS, in loop with the finite element program, ANSYS. Abstract

The Vinschgau Shear Zone (VSZ) is one of the largest and most significant shear zones developed under plastic conditions within the Austroalpine domain, juxtaposing the Ötztal and the Texel units to the Campo, Scharl and Sesvenna units during the building of the Eo-Alpine Orogen. The VSZ dominates the structural setting of a large portion of the central Austroalpine Late Cretaceous thrust stack. In order to fully assess the evolution of the VSZ, a multi-faceted approach based on detailed multiscale structural and petrochronological analyses has been carried out across representative transects of the shear zone in the Vinschgau Valley. The research has been performed with a view to characterizing kinematics, P–T conditions and timing of motion of the VSZ. Our fieldwork-based analyses suggest that the dip angle of mylonitic foliation increases from west to east with an E–W-trending stretching lineation which dips alternatively to the west and to the east, due to later folding related to the Cenozoic crustal shortening. The dominant top-to-W shear sense of the mylonites recognized in the field and confirmed by microstructural analyses led to exhumation of the upper Austroalpine nappes in the hanging wall of the shear zone; the Texel unit with Late Cretaceous eclogites and the Schneeberg and Ötztal units were all affected by Eo-Alpine amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Chemical and microstructural analyses suggest deformation temperatures of ca. 350–400 ∘C during shearing. Timing of deformation along the VSZ has been constrained for the first time through 40Ar/39Ar dating of syn-shearing micas, which reveal a Late Cretaceous age of the VSZ mylonites with ages ranging between 80 and 97 Ma. A systematic younging age of deformation occurs towards the central part of the shear zone in the studied transects. Vorticity analysis shows a clear decrease in the simple shear component correlated to the younging of mica ages towards the core of the shear zone. This evolution is consistent with the growth of a shear zone where shear strain localizes into its central part during deformation. The defined evolution of the VSZ sheds new light on how large-scale thrust-sense shear zones act and how much exhumation they can accommodate in the frame of an evolving orogenic wedge.

Abstract

The authors sought to establish whether maternal dietary methanol during pregnancy was a factor in the etiology of autism spectrum disorders. A seven item questionnaire was given to women who had given birth to at least one child after 1984. The subjects were solicited from a large primary care practice and several internet sites and separated into two groups - mothers who had given birth to a child with autism and those who had not. Average weekly methanol consumption was calculated based on questionnaire responses. 550 questionnaires were completed by women who gave birth to a non-autistic child. On average these women consumed 66.71mg. of methanol weekly. 161 questionnaires were completed by women who had given birth to an autistic child. The average estimated weekly methanol consumption for this group was 142.31mg. Based on the results of the Wilcoxon rank sum-test, we see a significant difference between the reported methanol consumption rates of the two groups. This study suggests that women who have given birth to an autistic child are likely to have had higher intake of dietary sources of methanol than women who have not. Further investigation of a possible link of dietary methanol to autism is clearly warranted.

In this paper we consider a family of Riemannian manifolds, not necessarily complete, with curvature conditions in a neighborhood of a ray. Under these conditions we obtain that the essential spectrum of the Laplace operator contains an interval. The results presented in this paper allow one to determine the spectrum of the Laplace operator on unlimited regions of space forms, such as a horoball in hyperbolic space and cones in Euclidean space.

Abstract

Rationale:Intensive care unit (ICU) patients undergo several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures every day. The prevalence, intensity, and risk factors of pain related to these procedures are not well known. Objectives: To assess self-reported procedural pain intensity versus baseline pain, examine pain intensity differences across procedures, and identify risk factors for procedural pain intensity. Methods: Prospective, cross-sectional, multicenter, multinational study of pain intensity associated with 12 procedures. Data were obtained from 3,851 patients who underwent 4,812 procedures in 192 ICUs in 28 countries. Measurements andMain Results: Painintensity on a 0–10 numeric rating scale increased significantly from baseline pain during all procedures (P , 0.001). Chest tube removal, wound drain removal, and arterial line insertion were the three most painful procedures, with median pain scores of 5 (3–7), 4.5 (2–7), and 4 (2–6), respectively. By multivariate analysis, risk factors independently associated with greater procedural pain intensity were the specific procedure; opioid administration specifically for the procedure; preprocedural pain intensity; preprocedural pain distress; intensity of the worst pain on the same day, before the procedure; and procedure not performed by a nurse. A significant ICU effect was observed, with no visible effect of country because of its absorption by the ICU effect. Some of the risk factors became nonsignificant when each procedure was examined separately. Conclusions: Knowledge of risk factors for greater procedural pain intensity identified in this study may help clinicians select interventions that are needed to minimize procedural pain. Abstract

Abstract Background The incidence and diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has increased considerably in recent years. Many clinical practice guidelines (CPG) have been developed for the management of this disease across different clinical contexts, however, little evidence exists on their methodological quality. Therefore, we aimed to systematically evaluate the quality of CPGs for the diagnosis and treatment of IBD using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II) instrument. Methods We identified CPGs by searching databases (MEDLINE - PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS) and other sources of gray literature on January 2022. We included guidelines with specific recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of IBD and evaluated them with the AGREE II instrument to assess their methodological quality. Six independent reviewers assessed the quality of the guidelines and resolved conflicts by consensus. We assessed the degree of agreement using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and change in quality over time was appraised in two periods: from 2012 to 2017 and from 2018 to 2022. Results We analyzed and evaluated 26 CPGs that met the inclusion criteria. The overall agreement among reviewers was moderate (ICC: 0.74; 95% CI 0.36 - 0.89). The mean scores of the AGREE II domains were: “Scope and purpose” 84.51%, “Stakeholder involvement” 60.90%, “Rigor of development” 69.95%, “Clarity of presentation” 85.58%, “Applicability” 26.60%, and “Editorial independence” 62.02%. No changes in quality were found over time. Conclusions The quality of the CPGs evaluated was generally good, with a large majority of the assessed guidelines being “recommended” and “recommended with modifications”; despite this, there is still room for improvement, especially in terms of stakeholder involvement and applicability. Efforts to develop high quality CPGs for IBD need to be further optimized.

Abstract

The Silicon Transition Radiation Detector (SiTRD) combines the excellent space resolution of a silicon tracker with the particle identification capability of a conventional TRD. The detector consists of multiple modules, each composed by a radiator and a tracker plane, separated by a gap and immersed in a magnetic field. This layout allows the separation of the TR photons possibly produced by radiating particles from their trajectories. Provided that the separation in the tracker plane is larger than the granularity of the tracker, the SiTRD can identify radiating particles from non-radiating ones. Moreover, the small amount of material encountered by the particles along their path does not significantly affect the momentum reconstruction performance of the tracker. These features make the SiTRD an attractive option when designing the inner tracker of a collider experiment. We have studied a possible SiTRD layout for the inner tracker of a collider experiment at LHC. The detector parameters have been optimized taking into account the geometry constraints derived from an upgrade proposal of the ATLAS inner tracker. A Monte Carlo simulation has been also developed in which the detector performance has been investigated.

Abstract

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope was successfully launched on June 11, 2008 and has already opened a new era for gamma-ray astronomy. The Large Area Telescope (LAT), the main instrument on board Fermi, presents a significant improvement in sensitivity over its predecessor EGRET, due to its large field of view and effective area, combined with its excellent timing capabilities. The preliminary results of the Spectral Energy Distribution Analysis performed on a sample of bright blazars are presented. For this study, the data from the first three months of data collection of Fermi have been used. The analysis is extended down to radio, mm, near-IR, optical, UV and X-ray bands and up to TeV energies based on unprecedented sample of simultaneous multi-wavelength observations by GASP-WEBT.

Abstract

Stream temperature appears to be increasing globally, but its rate remains poorly constrained due to a paucity of long-term data and difficulty in parsing effects of hydroclimate and landscape variability. Here, we address these issues using the physically based thermal model T-NET (Temperature-NETwork) coupled with the EROS semi-distributed hydrological model to reconstruct past daily stream temperature and streamflow at the scale of the entire Loire River basin in France (105 km2 with 52 278 reaches). Stream temperature increased for almost all reaches in all seasons (mean =+0.38 ∘C decade−1) over the 1963–2019 period. Increases were greatest in spring and summer, with a median increase of + 0.38 ∘C (range =+0.11 to +0.76 ∘C) and +0.44 ∘C (+0.08 to +1.02 ∘C) per decade, respectively. Rates of stream temperature increases were greater than for air temperature across seasons for the majority of reaches. Spring and summer increases were typically greatest in the southern part of the Loire basin (up to +1 ∘C decade−1) and in the largest rivers (Strahler order ≥5). Importantly, air temperature and streamflow could exert a joint influence on stream temperature trends, where the greatest stream temperature increases were accompanied by similar trends in air temperature (up to +0.71 ∘C decade−1) and the greatest decreases in streamflow (up to −16 % decade−1). Indeed, for the majority of reaches, positive stream temperature anomalies exhibited synchrony with positive anomalies in air temperature and negative anomalies in streamflow, highlighting the dual control exerted by these hydroclimatic drivers. Moreover, spring and summer stream temperature, air temperature, and streamflow time series exhibited common change points occurring in the late 1980s, suggesting a temporal coherence between changes in the hydroclimatic drivers and a rapid stream temperature response. Critically, riparian vegetation shading mitigated stream temperature increases by up to 0.16 ∘C decade−1 in smaller streams (i.e. < 30 km from the source). Our results provide strong support for basin-wide increases in stream temperature due to joint effects of rising air temperature and reduced streamflow. We suggest that some of these climate change-induced effects can be mitigated through the restoration and maintenance of riparian forests.

Abstract

Urban Heat Islands (UHI) phenomenon is a pressing problem for highly industrialized areas with serious risks for public health. Weather stations guarantee long-term accurate observations of weather parameters, such Air Temperature (AT), but lack appropriate spatial coverage. Numerous studies have argued that satellite Land Surface Temperature (LST) is a relevant parameter for estimating AT maps, exploring both linear regression and Machine Learning algorithms. This study proposes a Neural Network (NN) regression model for estimating the maximum AT from Landsat-8 data. The approach has been tested in a variegated morphological region (Puglia, Italy) using a large stack of data acquired from 2018 to 2020. The algorithm uses the median values of LST and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) computed using different buffer radius around the location of each reference weather station (250 m, 1000 m, and 2000 m) to train the NN model with a K-fold cross-validation strategy. The reference dataset was split into three sets using a stratified sampling approach considering the different station categories: rural, High- and Low-density Urban areas respectively. The algorithm was tested with different learning rates (LR) (0.001 and 0.005). The results show that our NN model accuracy improves with the increase of the buffer radius, minimizing the difference in terms of R^2 between training and evaluation data, with an overall accuracy consistently higher than 0.84. Future research could investigate more input variables in the NN model such as morphology or climate variables and test the algorithm on larger areas.

Abstract

The discovery of the gamma-ray pulsar PSR J1836+5925, powering the formerly unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1835+5918, was one of the early accomplishments of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Sitting 25 degrees off the Galactic plane, PSR J1836+5925 is a 173 ms pulsar with a characteristic age of 1.8 million years, a spindown luminosity of 1.1$\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and a large off-peak emission component, making it quite unusual among the known gamma-ray pulsar population. We present an analysis of one year of LAT data, including an updated timing solution, detailed spectral results and a long-term light curve showing no indication of variability. No evidence for a surrounding pulsar wind nebula is seen and the spectral characteristics of the off-peak emission indicate it is likely magnetospheric. Analysis of recent XMM observations of the X-ray counterpart yields a detailed characterization of its spectrum, which, like Geminga, is consistent with that of a neutron star showing evidence for both magnetospheric and thermal emission., Accepted to Astrophysical Journal
