The role of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) monitoring during neurosurgical procedure in patient remains unclear. The purpose of our study was to determine the feasibility of intra-operative VEPs recording using a strip cortical electrode during surgical resection of intracranial lesions METHODS: In this prospective monocentric observational study, we enrolled consecutive patients undergoing neurosurgical procedure for intracranial lesions. After dural opening, a cortical strip was positioned on the lateral occipital surface. Flash VEPs were continuously recorded using both subdermal corkscrew electrodes and strip electrodes. An electroretinogram was also recorded to guarantee delivery of adequate flash stimuli to the retina.We included 10 patients affected by different intracranial lesions. Flash VEPs were recorded using subdermal corkscrew electrodes in all patients except one in whom they were never identified during the recording. Flash VEPs were recorded using strip electrodes in all patients and showed a polyphasic morphology with a significantly larger amplitude compared with that of flash VEPs measured using subdermal corkscrew electrodes. No patient reported worsened postoperative vision, and a50% decrease in the VEPs amplitude was never registered.We have reported for the first time in the literature that VEPs monitoring during a neurosurgical procedure is feasible via a cortical strip located on the occipital surface. The technique demonstrated greater stability and a larger amplitude compared with recordings with scalp electrodes, facilitating identification of any changes. Studies with more patients are needed to assess the clinical reliability of the technique.

The direct carbonate procedure for accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dating of submilligram samples of biogenic carbonate without graphitization is becoming widely used in a variety of studies. We compare the results of 153 paired direct carbonate and standard graphite 14C determinations on single specimens of an assortment of biogenic carbonates. A reduced major axis regression shows a strong relationship between direct carbonate and graphite percent Modern Carbon (pMC) values (m = 0.996; 95% CI [0.991–1.001]). An analysis of differences and a 95% confidence interval on pMC values reveals that there is no significant difference between direct carbonate and graphite pMC values for 76% of analyzed specimens, although variation in direct carbonate pMC is underestimated. The difference between the two methods is typically within 2 pMC, with 61% of direct carbonate pMC measurements being higher than their paired graphite counterpart. Of the 36 specimens that did yield significant differences, all but three missed the 95% significance threshold by 1.2 pMC or less. These results show that direct carbonate 14C dating of biogenic carbonates is a cost-effective and efficient complement to standard graphite 14C dating.

Over the years, attention of literature on the relation between the caring process and the patient’s outcomes has increased. In healthcare Organization, collection and recording of data about Nursing Sensitive Outcomes (NSO) allow a reflection on the impact of some nursing interventions in the clinical practice. The goals is to improve the quality and safety of nursing care and of continuing nursing training too. The cardiac and / or cardiac surgery patient is complex. For this reason, Nurse has a central role in the Healthcare Team to ensure prevention, assessment and treatment along the clinical pathway. Objective Mapping a set of NSOs, through shared clinical indicators. These specific indicators refer to several macro–areas: multidimensional assessment, pain management, wound care, vascular access management and assessment, drug therapies management. The indicators are measured in all of setting involved in cardiac patient care. METHODS Monocentric, observational, retrospective study. The data are extracted from the Computerized Nursing Record on the total hospitalizations in the 2020 and 2021 and will be analyzed. RESULTS Some data about the total accesses to the ward, in 2020: Barthel scale evaluated within 6 hours of admission in 90% of cases, Braden in 91% and Retos in 92%. Specifically, in patients > = 65 years of age, Retos filled in 90% of cases. Mews score evaluated at least once in 24h in 95% of cases and if mews score > = 3 vital signs are revalued in 93% of patients. STU correctly completed by physicians in 95.2% of patients. Conclusions The preliminary results of this study are strategic in order to initiate a monitoring phase about the nursing process, organizational models and skills over time. It allows a reflection on the quality and safety of care and to enhance nursing skills. However, in the future, we will hope to carry out a survey aimed at nurses, to explore, with an intra–professional perspective, which outcomes are the most perceived as sensitive to nursing care in the cardiovascular field and to better describe the competences related to NSOs. The association between the results of the questionnaire and the indicators monitoring, will strategic in order to build future specific nursing training.

In 2017, Polydora websteri, a shell‐boring spionid polychaete worm and cosmopolitan invader, was identified for the first time in Washington State. Shell‐boring Polydora spp. and related shell‐boring spionid polychaetes (e.g., Dipolydora spp., Boccardia spp.), colloquially known as mud worms or mud blister worms, live in burrows within the shells of calcareous marine invertebrates, reducing the host's shell integrity, growth, survivorship and market value. Mud worms have a long history of impacting shellfish aquaculture industries worldwide by devaluing products destined for the half‐shell market and requiring burdensome treatments and interventions to manage against infestation. Here, we explore the risks of mud worms to the historically unaffected aquaculture industry in Washington State. This mini‐review is intended to inform shellfish stakeholders by synthesizing the information needed for immediate action in Washington State. We review the recent documentation of Polydora spp. in Washington State, discuss their history as pest species globally, summarize mud worm life history, and discuss effective control strategies developed in other infested regions. Finally, we review existing regulations that could be leveraged by stakeholders to avoid introduction of mud worms into uninfested areas of Washington State.

Invasions by shell-boring polychaetes such as Polydora websteri Hartman have resulted in the collapse of oyster aquaculture industries in Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. These worms burrow into bivalve shells, creating unsightly mud blisters that are unappealing to consumers and, when nicked during shucking, release mud and detritus that can foul oyster meats. Recent findings of mud blisters on the shells of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas Thunberg) in Washington State suggest a new spionid polychaete outbreak. To determine the identity of the polychaete causing these blisters, we obtained Pacific oysters from two locations in Puget Sound and examined them for blisters and burrows caused by polychaete worms. Specimens were also obtained from eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin) collected in New York for morphological and molecular comparison. We compared polychaete morphology to original descriptions, extracted DNA and sequenced mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase I [mtCOI]) and nuclear (small subunit 18S rRNA [18S rRNA]) genes to determine a species-level molecular identification for these worms. Our data show that Polydora websteri are present in the mud blisters from oysters grown in Puget Sound, constituting the first confirmed record of this species in Washington State. The presence of this notorious invader could threaten the sustainability of oyster aquaculture in Washington, which currently produces more farmed bivalves than any other US state.

“Lipari obsidian and Neolithic human communities in the Aeolian islands” is a project aimed at studying the connection between obsidian flows on the island of Lipari and Neolithic populations on the Aeolian archipelago, in Italy. As it is well known, obsidian is of particular interest to trace prehistorical trading patterns; indeed, Lipari obsidian has the widest distribution and has been found in southern France, Dalmazia, Sicily and mainland Italy. The project outputs will give a general vision of both archaeological and volcanological aspects through the stratigraphic and radiometric dating of eruptions which produced obsidian, in relationship with the first phases of the human settlements and row material exploitation. To reach this goal, we are considering both raw materials (geological samples) from different flows and artefacts from Neolithic settlements (archaeological samples) on the Aeolian islands, and performing fission-track dating to get the age of obsidian sources and artefacts. Obtained results are expected to shed some new light on the raw material procurement and on the ability of the Neolithic populations to move from their locations, with particular attention to the consequences of environmental features on the first human settlements on the Aeolian islands.

Adhesion GPCRs are structurally identified on the basis of a large extracellular region, similar to the Class B GPCR, but which is linked to the 7TM region by a GPCR autoproteolysis-inducing (GAIN) domain [9] containing a GPCR proteolytic site. The N-terminus often shares structural homology with adhesive domains (e.g. cadherins, immunolobulin, lectins) facilitating inter- and matricellular interactions and leading to the term adhesion GPCR [101, 403]. Several receptors have been suggested to function as mechanosensors [309, 280, 383, 35]. The nomenclature of these receptors was revised in 2015 as recommended by NC-IUPHAR and the Adhesion GPCR Consortium [122].

Hearing depends on the transduction of sounds into neural signals by the inner hair cells of the cochlea. Cochleae also have outer hair cells with unique electromotile properties that increase auditory sensitivity, but they are particularly susceptible to damage by intense noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, and aging. Although the outer hair cells have synapses on afferent neurons that project to the brain, the function of this neuronal circuit is unclear. Here, we created a novel mouse allele that inserts a fluorescent reporter at the C1ql1 locus which revealed gene expression in the outer hair cells and allowed creation of outer hair cell-specific C1ql1 knockout mice. We found that C1ql1 expression in outer hair cells corresponds to areas with the most sensitive frequencies of the mouse audiogram, and that it has an unexpected adolescence-onset developmental timing. No expression was observed in the inner hair cells. Since C1QL1 in the brain is made by neurons, transported anterogradely in axons, and functions in the synaptic cleft, C1QL1 may serve a similar function at the outer hair cell afferent synapse. Histological analyses revealed that C1ql1 conditional knockout cochleae may have reduced outer hair cell afferent synapse maintenance. However, auditory behavioral and physiological assays did not reveal a compelling phenotype. Nonetheless, this study identifies a potentially useful gene expressed in the cochlea and opens the door for future studies aimed at elucidating the function of C1QL1 and the function of the outer hair cell and its afferent neurons.

School climate is a topic of increasing importance internationally. The current study investigated the established measurement invariance of an eight-factor school climate scale using a multinational sample of secondary students. School climate factor means across 14 international groups were compared and findings on the association between school climate factors and mental health were also investigated. Findings, from this study, illustrate several cross-national similarities regarding the ways in which secondary students perceive school climate and the influence of school climate on student mental health. These findings can support school psychologists’ efforts to identify strategies and supports that improve the school environment in areas that are most consistently related to student experiences, such as school safety and school connectedness. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed. Impact and Implications Statement—This study contributes insights regarding cross-national perceptions of school climate and mental health. The findings from the current study inform school personnel efforts to develop and implement school improvement strategies that data shows have a notable impact on student experiences. Such information can be established and applied globally while also recognizing the additional influence of localized norms when implementing strategies or interventions. Synapses are the fundamental structural unit by which neurons communicate. An orchestra of proteins regulates diverse synaptic functions, including synapse formation, maintenance, and elimination-synapse homeostasis. Some proteins of the larger C1q super-family are synaptic organizers involved in crucial neuronal processes in various brain regions. C1Q-like (C1QL) proteins bind to the adhesion G protein-coupled receptor B3 (ADGRB3) and act at synapses in a subset of circuits. To investigate the hypothesis that the secreted C1QL proteins mediate tripartite trans-synaptic adhesion complexes, we conducted an in vivo interactome study and identified new binding candidates. We demonstrate that C1QL3 mediates a novel cell-cell adhesion complex involving ADGRB3 and two neuronal pentraxins, NPTX1 and NPTXR. Analysis of single-cell RNA-Seq data from the cerebral cortex shows that C1ql3, Nptx1, and Nptxr are highly co-expressed in the same excitatory neurons. Thus, our results suggest the possibility that in vivo the three co-expressed proteins are presynaptically secreted and form a complex capable of binding to postsynaptically localized ADGRB3, thereby creating a novel trans-synaptic adhesion complex. Identifying new binding partners for C1QL proteins and deciphering their underlying molecular principles will accelerate our understanding of their role in synapse organization.

Summary The mammalian brain contains few niches for neural stem cells (NSCs) capable of generating new neurons, whereas other regions are primarily gliogenic. Here we leverage the spatial separation of the sub-ependymal zone NSC niche and the olfactory bulb, the region to which newly generated neurons from the sub-ependymal zone migrate and integrate, and present a comprehensive proteomic characterization of these regions in comparison to the cerebral cortex, which is not conducive to neurogenesis and integration of new neurons. We find differing compositions of regulatory extracellular matrix (ECM) components in the neurogenic niche. We further show that quiescent NSCs are the main source of their local ECM, including the multi-functional enzyme transglutaminase 2, which we show is crucial for neurogenesis. Atomic force microscopy corroborated indications from the proteomic analyses that neurogenic niches are significantly stiffer than non-neurogenic parenchyma. Many biochemical, physiological, and behavioral processes such as glucose metabolism, body temperature, and sleep-wake cycles show regular daily rhythms. These circadian rhythms are adjusted to the environmental light-dark cycle by a central pacemaker located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in order for the processes to occur at appropriate times of day. Here, we investigated the expression and function of a synaptic organizing protein, C1QL3, in the SCN. We found that C1ql3 is robustly expressed in the SCN. C1ql3 knockout mice have a reduced density of excitatory synapses in the SCN. In addition, these mice exhibited less consolidated activity to the active portions of the day and period lengthening following a 15-minute phase-delaying light pulse. These data identify C1QL3 as a signaling molecule that is highly expressed in SCN neurons, where it contributes to the formation and/or maintenance of glutamatergic synapses and plays a role in circadian behaviors, which may include circadian aftereffects.

Predation is a key biotic interaction that shapes ecological communities. Defensive morphological traits are thought to improve prey survivorship, and knowing which traits aid survivorship is critical to understanding predator-prey dynamics and their impact on community composition. Paleontological studies that use optimal foraging theory and single species experiments suggest that shell size and thickness are traits that affect the outcome of mollusk drilling predation. We analyzed the effectiveness of these morphological traits using a tropical molluscan assemblage from the One Tree Reef lagoon (southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia). Shell mass, shape, thickness, and predation frequency were measured in five bivalve species (n = 804) constituting 80% of the predators' diet. Multiple regression determined that shell mass, shell thickness, and the interaction between the two were important predictors of predation. Drilling was more likely in thinner and larger individuals. However, support for the model that included species identity was markedly stronger, indicating that the morphological traits measured are not general predictors of predation across the five prey species we studied. That is, trait-only models are inadequate for explaining predator-prey dynamics at the community level. Alternatively, active behavioral defenses related to infaunality (like burrowing) appear to be stronger drivers of morphology in this system. Care should be taken when extrapolating results from experiments to communities or large temporal scales, as species with similar traits may not necessarily elicit the same response from predators.

Cytokines and chemokines play diverse roles in different organ systems. Family with sequence similarity 19, member A1-5 (FAM19A1-A5; also known as TAFA1-5) is a group of conserved chemokine-like proteins enriched in the CNS of mice and humans. Their functions are only beginning to emerge. Here, we show that the expression of Fam19a1-a5 in different mouse brain regions are induced or suppressed by unfed and refed states. The striking nutritional regulation of Fam19a family members in the brain suggests a potential central role in regulating metabolism. Using a knockout (KO) mouse model, we show that loss of FAM19A1 results in sexually dimorphic phenotypes. In male mice, FAM19A1 deficiency alters food intake patterns during the light and dark cycle. Fam19a1 KO mice are hyperactive, and locomotor hyperactivity is more pronounced in female KO mice. Behavior tests indicate that Fam19a1 KO female mice have reduced anxiety and sensitivity to pain. Spatial learning and exploration, however, is preserved in Fam19a1 KO mice. Altered behaviors are associated with elevated norepinephrine and dopamine turnover in the striatum. Our results establish an in vivo function of FAM19A1 and highlight central roles for this family of neurokines in modulating animal physiology and behavior.-Lei, X., Liu, L., Terrillion, C. Objectives To report clinical, angiographic characteristics, outcomes, and predictors of unsuccessful procedures in patients who underwent chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in Latin America. Background CTO PCI has been increasingly performed worldwide, but there is a lack of information in this region. Methods An international multicenter registry was developed to collect data on CTO PCI performed in centers in Latin America. Patient, angiographic, procedural and outcome data were evaluated. Predictors of unsuccessful procedures were assessed by multivariable analysis. Results We have included data related to 1,040 CTO PCIs performed in seven countries in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Puerto Rico). The mean age was 64 ± 10 years, and CTO PCI was performed mainly for angina control (81%) or treatment of a large ischemic area (30%). Overall technical success rate was 82.5%, and it was achieved with antegrade wire escalation in 81%, antegrade dissection/re-entry in 8% and with retrograde techniques in 11% of the successful procedures. Multivariable analysis identified moderate/severe calcification, a blunt proximal cap and a previous attempt as independent predictors of unsuccessful procedures. In-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) occurred in 3.1% of the cases, death in 1% and cardiac tamponade in 0.9% CONCLUSIONS: CTO PCI in Latin America has been performed mainly for ischemia relief. Procedures were associated with a success rate above 80% and low incidence of MACE. Predictors of unsuccessful procedures were similar to those previously reported in the literature.

Background Hospital pharmacovigilance (PV) has always shown an irregular trend. High increases in the use of adverse drug reactions (ADR) reporting are often recorded during the times in which ad hoc surveillance projects are also carried out. There are several reasons: the lack of knowledge about the role of the PV, the underestimation of the iatrogenic illnesses, job organisation problems and the perception of PV as a merely bureaucratic procedure. Purpose The purpose of the survey was to suggest the use of some practical and quick tools that could help the staff of the hospital reporting the ADRs in a continuous and spontaneous way, without interfering in the ordinary management of the patients. Material and methods The entire hospital staff was asked to take part in a survey sent by company e-mail. The survey consisted of 15 questions, which the participants could answer online anonymously. The first part of the questionnaire concerned the meaning of ADR, while the second one examined useful tools for the encouragement of the surveillance. The results were analysed through Microsoft Excel and LimeSurvey. Results Two-thousand, six-hundred and seventy-two surveys were collected, with a participation rate of 27.3%. The obtained data highlighted that only 31.23% of the participants knew the correct meaning of ADR: 69.32% of them had never reported an ADR. The chance of notifying directly the ADRs to the Qualified Person Responsible for Pharmacovigilance (QPPV) by putting a tick in the software for the patients’ management was evaluated positively by the participants. Moreover, 69.73% of the interviewed would find the presence of the QPPV inside the ward useful. Conclusion The analysis of the results shows that the promotion of PV knowledge is strongly suggested. Supporting the wards in the comprehension of the reporting procedures is considered rather important. Furthermore, it is recommended to add a checkbox for the ADRs in the software for the patients’ management to promote the use of such an activity in the long term. In addition, the QPPV should have access to medical reports and useful data so that thorough and high-standard ADR reports could be provided. Reef-associated sediments accumulate over time recording the history of biological communities. The agreement between live and dead assemblages has been extensively studied, because discrepancies between the two can reveal taphonomic bias, anthropogenic impact, and/or a decrease in temporal resolution of dead assemblages to centennial scales (i.e., time averaging). Given the potential of sedimentary assemblages to provide temporal perspectives on the history of modern communities, assessments of live-dead agreement in reef mollusk assemblage composition are necessary and timely for understanding rapid environmental change. One Tree Reef (OTR) (southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia) has had very little direct anthropogenic influence over the past four decades, making it a good system for focusing on taphonomic patterns. Live (n = 1335) and dead (n = 6919) molluscan assemblages were collected from three shallow (6 m) carbonate soft-sediment lagoons. Diversity and evenness metrics indicated no significant difference between the live and dead assemblages, and dead assemblage rank order abundance explains 82% of that of the live assemblage. Differences in composition were largely due to sample size, the low probability of sampling rare species and to a lesser degree differences in skeletal durability. Taphonomic factors were responsible for less than 20% of the differences in species composition between live and dead shell assemblages. The live molluscan assemblage sampled was similar to the live assemblage sampled 30 years ago. Given that time averaging is approximately 19 years in the OTR lagoon, we conclude that the composition of the living assemblage has remained largely unchanged for the last 30 years. These findings indicate that dead assemblages preserved in shallow, fully carbonate environments primarily reflect the composition of the original source communities, making them useful to identify recent changes in coral reef areas where anthropogenic impacts are present.

PURPOSE: Rituximab maintenance therapy has been shown to improve progression free survival in patients with follicular lymphoma; however the optimal duration of maintenance treatment remains unknown. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred seventy patients with untreated relapsed stable or chemotherapy resistant follicular lymphoma were treated with four doses of rituximab monotherapy in weekly intervals (375 mg/m(2)). Patients achieving at least a partial response were randomly assigned to receive maintenance therapy with one infusion of rituximab every 2 months either on a short term schedule (four administrations) or a long term schedule (maximum of 5 years or until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity). The primary end point was event free survival (EFS). Progression free survival overall survival (OS) and toxicity were secondary end points. Comparisons between the two arms were performed using the log rank test for survival end points. RESULTS: One hundred sixty five patients were randomly assigned to the short term (n = 82) or long term (n = 83) maintenance arms. Because of the low event rate the final analysis was performed after 95 events had occurred which was before the targeted event number of 99 had been reached. At a median follow up period of 6.4 years the median EFS was 3.4 years (95 CI 2.1 to 5.3) in the short term arm and 5.3 years (95 CI 3.5 to not available) in the long term arm (P = .14). Patients in the long term arm experienced more adverse effects than did those in the short term arm with 76 v 50 of patients with at least one adverse event (P < .001) five versus one patient with grade 3 and 4 infections and three versus zero patients discontinuing treatment because of unacceptable toxicity respectively. There was no difference in OS between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Long term rituximab maintenance therapy does not improve EFS which was the primary end point of this trial or OS and was associated with increased toxicity.

Predation is frequently suggested to be a key biotic process that can shape ecological communities and drive coevolution. The premise behind these hypotheses is that predators select prey to ensure maximum gain per unit effort; for example, by selecting species that are more abundant or accessible. In this study, we tested for predator selectivity in a tropical molluscan assemblage by quantifying the influence of relative abundance (encounter frequency) on predation frequencies. We collected macromollusks (> 4 mm) from 15 sites in three soft-sediment reef lagoons at One Tree Reef (southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia). Dead mollusks were counted and identified to species level (61 species, n = 8131), and species predation frequencies were calculated as the proportion of shells with drill holes. We found that in this infauna-dominated community, levels of drilling predation were low (7.14% on average), and there was no evidence that predators selected prey based on encounter frequency. This result was consistent across prey species and lagoons. Thus, drilling predators did not specialize on more accessible prey species and were not a major cause of mortality in this modern macromollusk assemblage. Since drilling gastropods are size selective, lack of selectivity in our samples only applies to the prey size range considered. Detailed studies of prey morphological traits, as well as accounting for predator non-consumptive effects could shed light on the preferences and relevance of drilling gastropods in this soft-sediment carbonate reef assemblage.

Plastic pollution is a threat to marine life with long term impacts to ecosystems and organisms in the sea. In this study, we quantified the presence of microparticles in wild populations of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from the Salish Sea, Washington State. Examination under a dissecting microscope revealed 63% of oysters contained microparticles (~1.75 microparticles per oyster) and microfibers were the dominant type of particles. Using Raman microspectroscopy (RMS) and Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (μ-FTIR) we found that only ~2% of these microparticles were synthetic and included polymers such as polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(bisphenol A carbonate), rayon, and polyacrylate. It is important to note that of the 447 microparticles analyzed with RMS, 41% showed fluorescence interference, impeding the determination of their identification. The remaining microparticles were cellulose derivatives, shell fragments, biological or proteinaceous material, salts, minerals, and gypsum. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with a diamond attenuated total reflectance accessory (ATR-FTIR) showed the presence of sorbitan derivatives in all samples examined (n = 213). These findings provide the first baseline for microplastic and other particles in oysters from the west coast of the United States integrating results from ATR-FTIR, μ-FTIR, and RMS, in addition to visual sorting. These results suggest there is low retention of plastic particles in Pacific oysters from the Salish Sea, but further research is needed to determine the composition of microparticles with fluorescence interference.

Dredging of potentially contaminated sediments from ports and waterways is an inevitable operation in order to maintain adequate depths for ship navigation. The fate of these sediments is an issue discussed worldwide due to their impact on human and environmental health. In this scenario, the aim of the present study is to provide an innovative eco-friendly and adaptable solution for dredged sediment decontamination and rehabilitation based on sediment washing followed by a biological treatment. The sediment washing, conducted at pilot scale, split the raw dredged sediment into two fractions of homogeneous particle size (silt-clay fraction and sand fraction). Sand fraction was characterized by a significant lower values of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) with respect to the silt-clay and raw sediment samples. The biological treatment, carried out at mesoscale level, consisted in the addiction of a mixture of microorganisms (with hydrocarbon degrading ability), enzymes, and nutrients (bioactivator product) to the three matrices (raw sediment, silt-clay and sand). After three months, in raw sediment and sand fraction, the bioactivator product allowed a 46% and 55% removal of TPH, respectively; instead, in silt-clay fraction this treatment was not able to degrade significant amount of organic pollutants (reduction percentage of TPH lower than 5%). Culture-dependent analysis showed higher concentration of microbial cells immediately after addition of the bioactivator product and a general increasing of microbial biomass in both treated and untreated samples at the end of the experimentation. Moreover, PCR-DGGE analysis evidenced that the composition of microbial population varied in relation to the different granulometric characteristics of the sediment and to the application of the bioactivator product. Thus, the results here reported showed that bacterial and fungal communities responded differently to the bioremediation treatment. These results seem very promising considering the complexity of the material to be decontaminated and the apparent difficulty of creating acceptable habitat for the operation of a biological active system.

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM) is a technique that may contribute to avoiding permanent neurological injury during spine surgery procedure, especially in patients undergoing scoliosis correction. In the last 12 months 26 patients underwent spinal procedures for scoliosis and kyphosis, spinal (cervical or lumbar) stenosis, degenerative disc disease; a patient with posttraumatic L1 fracture and a patient with intradural extramedullary neurinoma were monitored too. TIVA-TCI anesthesia was used in all patients while muscle relaxants were limited only during some patient’s intubation. SEPs (median and tibial nerve) and MEPs (ADM and TA-AH muscles and in cervical surgery also deltoid and ECD muscles) were attempted in all patients. Spontaneous EMG activity was also recorded from multiple muscles. Only in two cases we had significant prolonged alterations of IOM: during a D3 neurinoma surgery we observed the loss of MEPs from a leg with return at normality after a stop and change of neurosurgery procedures; in a decompression/stabilization D10-S1 cortical SEPs and MEPs of right leg slowly reduced progressively until the end of surgery (with a slight transitory paresis). The use of IOM in spine surgery affects positively the neurological outcome so that it has to become a routine procedure.

Trait-based approaches advance ecological and evolutionary research because traits provide a strong link to an organism's function and fitness. Trait-based research might lead to a deeper understanding of the functions of, and services provided by, ecosystems, thereby improving management, which is vital in the current era of rapid environmental change. Coral reef scientists have long collected trait data for corals; however, these are difficult to access and often under-utilized in addressing large-scale questions. We present the Coral Trait Database initiative that aims to bring together physiological, morphological, ecological, phylogenetic and biogeographic trait information into a single repository. The database houses species- and individual-level data from published field and experimental studies alongside contextual data that provide important framing for analyses. In this data descriptor, we release data for 56 traits for 1547 species, and present a collaborative platform on which other trait data are being actively federated. Our overall goal is for the Coral Trait Database to become an open-source, community-led data clearinghouse that accelerates coral reef research.

The use of rocky intertidal assemblages in paleoecology and conservation paleobiology studies is limited because these environments have low preservation potential. Here, we evaluate the fidelity between living intertidal mussel bed communities (life assemblages or LAs) and mollusk shell accumulations (death assemblages or DAs) from the environmentally harsh Patagonian Atlantic Coast. LAs were sampled from rocky mid-intertidal and mussel-dominated habitats while DAs were collected from the high water mark at beaches in close proximity to the living intertidal community to assess live-dead mismatch at regional scales. DAs were restricted to the subset of species in the DAs that inhabit rocky intertidal habitats. A total of 37,193 mollusk specimens from 15 intertidal species were included in the analysis. Ten species were present in LAs, 14 in DAs, and nine were shared by LAs and DAs. DAs showed higher diversity, less dominance, and more rare species than LAs. Despite finding good agreement in species composition between DAs and LAs within the same region, smaller species are underrepresented, as shown by differences in size-frequency distributions. Our findings indicate that the composition of DAs is a result of the combined effects of spatial and temporal averaging, size-related biases, and biases related to low detectability of boring and vagile species in LAs. Thus, DAs do not accurately detect within-provincial latitudinal gradients in composition. However, DAs clearly capture differences between the Argentine-Magellanic Transition Zone and the Magellanic Province, indicating that DAs are informative tools at regional scales despite the environmental harshness to which they are subjected. The Adhesion family forms a large branch of the pharmacologically important superfamily of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). As Adhesion GPCRs increasingly receive attention from a wide spectrum of biomedical fields, the Adhesion GPCR Consortium, together with the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology Committee on Receptor Nomenclature and Drug Classification, proposes a unified nomenclature for Adhesion GPCRs. The new names have ADGR as common dominator followed by a letter and a number to denote each subfamily and subtype, respectively. The Southeast Pacific is characterized by rich upwelling systems that have sustained and been impacted by human groups for at least 12 ka. Recent fishing and aquaculture practices have put a strain on productive coastal ecosystems from Tongoy Bay, in north-central Chile. We use a temporal baseline to determine whether potential changes to community structure and composition over time are due to anthropogenic factors, natural climatic variations or both. We compiled a database (n = 33 194) with mollusc species abundances from the Mid-Pleistocene, Late Pleistocene, Holocene, dead shell assemblages and live-sampled communities. Species richness was not significantly different, neither were diversity and evenness indices nor rank abundance distributions. There is, however, an increase in relative abundance for the cultured scallopArgopecten, while the previously dominant clamMuliniais locally very rare. Results suggest that impacts from both natural and anthropogenic stressors need to be better understood if benthic resources are to be preserved. These findings provide the first Pleistocene temporal baseline for the south Pacific that shows that this highly productive system has had the ability to recover from past alterations, suggesting that if monitoring and management practices continue to be implemented, moderately exploited communities from today have hopes for recovery.

The surgical management during ligation of a spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF) is usually based on fluorescenceangiography, intraoperative Doppler ultrasound, and intraoperative digital subtractionangiography. We investigated the potential role of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) during surgical management of SDAVF. A 45 years-old woman with a history of bilateral dysesthesia in the lower limbs showed on MR myelopathy at dorsal level likely due to SDAVF. A surgical approach was planned and IONM was required. IONM included transcranial electrical stimulation Motor Evoked Potentials (tceMEPs) recorded from AH and TA bilaterally and ADM on the left arm, Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SEP) for stimulation of left and right Posterior Tibial and left Median Nerves, continuous electroencephalogram for checking any changes due to anesthesia. The surgeon clamps for four times on vessels belonging fistula then takes into account neurophysiological changes before proceeding to the final ligation. We observed no significant SEP changes during surgery, and only transient disappearance of tceMEPs after the fourth clamp. IONM allowed a real-time functional evaluation of piramidal tract before and after microsurgical occlusion of the fistula. IONM can integrate other imaging modalities during SDAVF.

Continued growth of tourism has led to concerns about direct and indirect impacts on the ecology of coral reefs and ultimate sustainability of these environments under such pressure. This research assessed impacts of reef walking by tourists on a relatively pristine reef flat community associated with an 'ecoresort' on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Heavily walked areas had lower abundances of live hard coral but greater amounts of dead coral and sediment. Abundances of macroalgae were not affected between sites. Coral-associated butterflyfish were less abundant and less diverse in more trampled sites. A manipulative experiment showed handling holothurians on reef walks had lasting negative impacts. This is the first study to show potential impacts of such handling on holothurians. Ecological impacts of reef walking are weighed against sociocultural benefits of a first hand experience in nature.

C1ql3 is a secreted neuronal protein that binds to BAI3, an adhesion-class GPCR. C1ql3 is homologous to other gC1q-domain proteins that control synapse numbers, but a role for C1ql3 in regulating synapse density has not been demonstrated. We show in cultured neurons that C1ql3 expression is activity dependent and supports excitatory synapse density. Using newly generated conditional and constitutive C1ql3 knockout mice, we found that C1ql3-deficient mice exhibited fewer excitatory synapses and diverse behavioral abnormalities, including marked impairments in fear memories. Using circuit-tracing tools and conditional ablation of C1ql3 targeted to specific brain regions, we demonstrate that C1ql3-expressing neurons in the basolateral amygdala project to the medial prefrontal cortex, that these efferents contribute to fear memory behavior, and that C1ql3 is required for formation and/or maintenance of these synapses. Our results suggest that C1ql3 is a signaling protein essential for subsets of synaptic projections and the behaviors controlled by these projections.

The HFE molecule controls iron uptake from gut, and defects in the molecule have been associated with iron overload, particularly in hereditary hemochromatosis. The HFE gene including both coding and boundary intronic regions were sequenced in 304 Brazilian individuals, encompassing healthy individuals and patients exhibiting hereditary or acquired iron overload. Six sites of variation were detected: (1) H63D CG in exon 2, (2) IVS2 (+4) TC in intron 2, (3) a CG transversion in intron 3, (4) C282Y GA in exon 4, (5) IVS4 (-44) TC in intron 4, and (6) a new guanine deletion (Gdel) in intron 5, which were used for haplotype inference. Nine HFE alleles were detected and six of these were officially named on the basis of the HLA Nomenclature, defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) Nomenclature Committee for Factors of the HLA System, and published via the IPD-IMGT/HLA website. Four alleles, HFE*001, *002, *003, and *004 exhibited variation within their exon sequences.

Archaeological plant remains, used to establish a reliable chronology by radiocarbon dating, are used here to investigate trends in past rainfall intensity. The stable carbon isotope ratio in botanic remains depends on environmental conditions during the plant's life. By comparing the δ13C and 14C of selected plant specimens from 3 protohistoric sites in the Aeolian Archipelago, it is possible to identify short-term changes in the rainfall intensity during the 2nd millennium BC. The climate signals inferred from carbon isotope analyses are compared to pollen data for the region and are found to be consistent with changes in vegetal cover. Finally, the climate signals are integrated with the history of the Aeolian communities and the resilience of settlers is evaluated.

This paper evaluates if the bivalveTawera gayifrom southern South America represents an opportunity to test ecological variability and environmental changes during the last 6000 years in southern South America. For this purpose, we analyse both modern and fossil (mid-to-late Holocene)T. gayishells from Tierra del Fuego using different techniques, including taphonomy, stable isotopes, cathodoluminiscence (CL) and linear morphometrics. Taphonomic analysis shows that differences between modern and fossil shells appear best related to local variations of physical factors such as current speed, wave action and freshwater input along the non-uniform Beagle Channel coast. However, slight changes of hydraulic energy regimes throughout the Holocene cannot be ruled out. The analysis of stable isotopes onT. gayishells indicates a mixing of oceanic waters with freshwater from precipitation, river runoff and glacier meltwater during the mid-to-late Holocene. The high depletion of δ18O at ~4400 years before present would be associated with a period of warmer temperatures, the so-called Hypsithermal. Under CL modern and fossilT. gayishells show a well defined pattern related to the growth dynamics of the shell, which can lead to a better understanding of its biology, adding details to further palaeoenvironmental analysis. Finally, conventional metrics shows that fossilT. gayishells are smaller and shorter than modern shells. These differences could be related to Holocene environmental changes, but here are best explained on the basis of a predator–prey relationship. This study shows thatT. gayimay be a good candidate for looking at evidences of environmental changes in southern South America, and multi-proxy data are necessary to better understand the driving mechanisms of ecological variability and changes over short geological time intervals of few thousands of years.
