A full-length hexokinase cDNA, HaHXK1, was cloned and characterized from Helianthus annuus L. developing seeds. Based on its sequence and phylogenetic relationships, HaHXK1 is a membrane-associated (type-B) hexokinase. The predicted structural model resembles known hexokinase structures, folding into two domains of unequal size: a large and a small one separated by a deep cleft containing the residues involved in the enzyme active site. A truncated version, without the 24 N-terminal residues, was heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, purified to electrophoretic homogeneity using immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography and biochemically characterized. The purified enzyme behaved as a monomer on size exclusion chromatography and had a specific activity of 19.3 μmol/min/mg protein, the highest specific activity ever reported for a plant hexokinase. The enzyme had higher affinity for glucose and mannose relative to fructose, but the enzymatic efficiency was higher with glucose. Recombinant HaHXK1 was inhibited by ADP and was insensitive either to glucose-6-phosphate or to trehalose-6-phosphate. Its expression profile showed higher levels in heterotrophic tissues, developing seeds and roots, than in photosynthetic ones. A time course of HXK activity and expression in seeds showed that the highest HXK levels are found at the early stages of reserve compounds, lipids and proteins accumulation. © 2010 Elsevier GmbH., This work was supported by Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and FEDER, project AGL2005-00100. In order to determine the theoretical performance of the multilayer BGO scintillation block used in small positron emission tomography (PET) scanners, we have used the DETECT2000 Monte Carlo simulation of the light transport in scintillation crystal software. The scintillation block is made of two arrays of individual crystals and they are held together by an interconnecting layer. The results given by this software demonstrate that some of the individual crystals in the block could not be distinguished even under the best circumstances. Also, we have found that it would be difficult to correctly distinguish an important fraction of the individual crystals under bad conditions. The simulations determined that the layer connecting the different crystals is the most important factor of degradation of the performance of the scintillation block. Simulations of different widths of interconnecting layer suggest that much better identification could be obtained by reducing the width of this layer.

Aim This analysis estimates the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in French adults participating in the ObEpi (obesity epidemiology) 2012 survey and also proposes a description of that population, according to comorbidities, treatments and sociodemographic factors related to the disease. Methods A self-administered questionnaire was posted to 20,000 households from the Kantar Health panel. In total, 25,714 adults aged≥18 years and representative of the French population completed the survey between January and March 2012. Results The prevalence of T2DM was 5.5±0.3% (95% CI) in this representative sample of the adult French population. Average age of patients was 65.9 years; 55% were men. Mean body mass index was 29.9kg/m 2 (men: 29.4kg/m 2 , women: 30.6 kg/m 2 ; P 0.01); the prevalence of obesity was 43.1% (men: 39.9%, women: 47.1%; P 0.01). Patient-reported treatments for comorbidities were frequent: high blood pressure, 59.1%; dyslipidaemia, 59.9%; myocardial infarction/angina pectoris, 9.7%; revascularization, 7.8%; heart failure, 7.4%; sleep apnoea, 8.3%; and osteoarthritis, 10.7%. With regards to known treatments, 81.4% of patients were taking oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs), and 15.3% were using insulin therapy. Also, 18.8% of diabetic respondents reported financial hardship. Conclusion T2DM remains a disease of major concern: compared with the non-diabetic population, all parameters surveyed showed unfavourable ratings, particularly for women.

An isotopic source of high-energy gamma rays has been constructed and tested. The source uses either a long-lived americium–beryllium neutron source or 252Cf to produce fast neutrons, which are moderated in paraffin and then absorbed in metallic nickel. The radiative capture of thermal neutrons in natural metallic Ni produced five prominent gamma-ray energies in the range 7.5–9 MeV, of which the 8.997 MeV line is the strongest by more than a factor of two. The source was optimized for counting rate by measuring gamma-ray energy spectra with a 76 mm diam. NaI detector, then used to test an imaging BGO detector with gamma rays in the energy range 7.5–9 MeV.

The authors investigated the impact of replacing BGO by lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) in the fabrication of the EXACT HR PLUS position encoding detector for PET. A detailed Monte Carlo simulation was used to track the interactions of energetic photons in the volume of the block as well as to treat the generation and propagation of scintillation light through its geometry. The simulation also accounts for LSO's non-proportional scintillation response, the bulk attenuation to its own scintillation and the noise contribution from the amplification of photoelectrons in the readout units. The model predicts that the increased photostatistics available in LSO compared to BGO leads to improvements by up to a factor five in the peak-to-valley ratios of the position response of the block to a uniform flood of 511 keV photons. For the crystals located along the diagonal, and considering events in a window of 350 to 650 keV, the position encoding accuracy is found to vary from 69% to 88% representing an absolute gain of at most 8% over its BGO precursor. With peak photoelectron counts of 678 to 2024, the energy resolution of the same crystals is found to vary from 14% to 9%.

We present a count rate model for PET. Considering a standard 20/spl times/20 cm phantom in the field-of-view of a cylindrical septaless tomograph, the model computes the acceptance to prompt and random events from simple geometric considerations. Dead time factors at all stages of a typical event acquisition architecture are calculated from specified processing clock cycles. Validations of the model's predictions against the measured performances of the ECAT-953B and the EXACT HR PLUS are presented. The model is then used to investigate the benefit of using detectors made of LSO in the EXACT HR PLUS scanner geometry. The results indicate that in replacing BGO by the faster LSO, one can count on an increase of the peak noise-equivalent-count rate by a factor 2.2. This gain will be achieved by using a 5 nsec coincidence window, buckets operating on a 128 nsec clock cycle, and a front-end data acquisition that can sustain a total rate of 2.9 MHz.

A position sensitive detector for 9 MeV gamma rays has been developed as part of a contraband detection system for airports. The system, comprised of 88 detectors, will image contraband, such as explosives or drugs, in a geometry similar to medical X-ray computed tomography. A point source of gamma rays shines through an unknown object. Transmission projections of the areal density of detected gamma rays are reconstructed into a 3D image, which shows the presence of concealed contraband inside the object. The image quality depends critically on the spatial resolution of the gamma ray detector. The new detector is a modified version of detectors developed by CTI for medical PET imaging with 0.511 MeV gamma rays. A prototype detector was characterized by exposing it to 9 MeV gamma rays from a /sup 252/Cf+Ni source. Projection images of a simple phantom object show that the detector is capable of faithful imaging at 9 MeV.

Recently, we have shown that the program DETECT provides a realistic platform to model the performances of scintillation counters with geometries as involved as that of the EXACT HR PLUS, a state-of-the-art position and energy encoding EGO detector manufactured by Siemens-CTI for positron emission tomography (PET). In this paper we present the results of new simulations of this block's performances, updated to include the nonproportionality of the scintillation response of EGO and the statistical noise from photoelectron amplification in photomultiplier tubes (PMT's). The updated model accounts for the crystal-dependent energy resolutions observed with 511-keV photons in the detector with excellent accuracy. Measured and simulated resolutions are shown to agree within -1 to 4%, with an average absolute difference of 1% over the entire block. The impact of the nonproportional scintillation response of EGO on the energy resolution is shown to be relatively small compared to that of the amplification noise in the four PMT's reading out the block.

The authors report the results of design studies for a multicrystal detector with the capacity to encode the Depth-Of-Interaction (DOI). These studies are based on a simulation that treats the interactions of /spl gamma/-rays and tracks scintillation photons in state-of-the-art position encoding PET detectors. The simulation was used to study the impact of a simple modification to the standard surface treatment of the EXACT HR PLUS block that induces a significant sensitivity of the photopeak pulse height upon the DOI of 511 keV /spl gamma/-rays. The depth resolution achieved with the altered block as well as the impact of the modification on its energy and position resolutions are presented. The results show a depth resolution of 6 to 7 mm for the inner crystals of the modified block. The center crystals show the largest increase in event position miscoding with 16% less encoding accuracy in the modified block compared to the original one.

The depth-of-interaction effect in block detectors degrades the image resolution in commercial PET cameras and impedes the natural evolution of smaller, less expensive cameras. A method for correcting the measured position of each detected gamma ray by measuring its depth-of-interaction was tested and found to recover 38% of the lost resolution at 7.5 cm radius in a tabletop, 50-cm-diameter camera. To obtain the desired depth sensitivity, standard commercial detectors were modified by a simple and practical process that is suitable for mass production of the detectors. The impact of the detector modifications on central image resolution and on the ability of the camera to correct for object scatter were also measured.

We have developed a simulation to model position encoding multicrystal detectors for positron emission tomography. The simulation is designed to treat the interactions of energetic photons in a scintillator, the geometry of the multicrystal array, as well as the propagation and detection of individual scintillation photons. The simulation is tested with a model of the EXACT HR PLUS block detector manufactured by Siemens-CTI. Position and energy responses derived from the simulation are compared to measured ones. Line-spread-functions, for four columns of crystals, are reproduced with an accuracy of /spl plusmn/0.5 mm. The crystal-by-crystal photopeak pulse heights and FWHMs are also predicted within a range of /spl plusmn/14%, and /sub -6//sup +9/%, respectively.

The feasibility of a whole-body PET tomograph with the capacity to correct for the parallax error induced by the depth-of-interaction of /spl gamma/-rays is assessed through simulation. The experimental energy, depth, and transverse position resolutions of EGO block detector candidates are the main inputs to a simulation that predicts the point source resolution of the depth encoding large aperture camera (DELAC). The results indicate that a measured depth resolution of 7 mm (FWHM) is sufficient to correct a substantial part of the parallax error for a point source at the edge of the field-of-view. Results from a search for the block specifications and camera ring radius that would optimize the spatial resolution and its uniformity across the field-of-view are also presented. >

The fraction of\(Z^0 \to b\bar b\); events in hadronicZ0 decays has been measured using the data collected by OPAL in 1992 and 1993. The presence of electrons or muons from semileptonic decays of bottom hadrons and the detection of bottom hadron decay vertices were used together to obtain an event sample enriched in\(Z^0 \to b\bar b\) decays. To reduce the systematic error on the measurement of the\(Z^0 \to b\bar b\) fraction, the efficiency of the\(b\bar b\) event tagging was obtained from the data by comparing the numbers of events having a bottom signature in either one or both thrust hemispheres. A value of $$\frac{{\Gamma (Z^0 \to b\bar b)}}{{\Gamma (Z^0 \to hadrons)}} = 0.2171 \pm 0.0021 \pm 0.0021$$ was obtained, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The uncertainty on the decay width\(\Gamma (Z^0 \to c\bar c)\) is not included in these errors. A fractional variation of this width by ±8% about its Standard Model prediction would result in a variation of the measured\(Z^0 \to b\bar b\) fraction of ±0.0015.

In hadronic Z0 decays collected by the OPAL experiment at LEP, event shape variables such as jet rates, jet masses, thrust and the energy-energy correlation for $$Z^0 \to b\bar b$$ events are compared to those for all flavours using secondary vertex information to tag the b quarks. The measured distributions are found to be well described by anO"(α s ) calculation for heavy quarks as well as by parton shower simulations. We also determine the ratio of the strong coupling constant for b quarks and all quarks, α b /α incl , from these distributions. We find $$\alpha _s^b /\alpha _s^{incl} = 0.994 \pm 0.005_{ - 0.012}^{ + 0.010} ,$$ where the errors are the statistical and systematic errors. The result can be converted into the ratio for b quarks relative to the complementary flavours udsc α b /α udsc =0.992±0.007 -0.015 +0.013 .

We present an update of our measurement of the τ lepton lifetime, using data taken during 1992 and 1993 with the OPAL detector at LEP. The lifetime is determined from analyses of the impact parameters of tracks from τ decays to a single charged particle, and the reconstructed decay lenghts from the τ decays to three charged particles. With the added statistics (which increase the τ pair event sample size by more than a factor of four over our 1990 and 1991 data sample), the updated lifetime measurement is: ττ = 288.8 ± 2.2 (stat) ± 1.4 (sys) fs. When combined with world-average measurements of the tau leptonic branching fractions (assuming e-μ universality), the ratio of charged-current couplings is: ( g τ g μ ) = 1.005 ± 0.007 , in agreement with the hypothesis of τ-μ charged-current universality.

A measurement of\(\Gamma _{b\bar b} /\Gamma _{had} \equiv \Gamma (Z^0 \to b\bar b)/\Gamma (Z^0 \to hadrons)\) is presented using a “mixed tag” method involving the identification of\(Z^0 \to b\bar b\) events by two different techniques. The first uses the large impact parameter of tracks emerging from the decay ofb-flavoured hadrons and the second their semi-leptonic decay. The identification efficiencies are measured from the data using all possible combinations of the two tags in opposite hemispheres. The method is therefore insensitive to Monte Carlo modelling of bottom quark production and ofb-flavoured hadron production and decay properties, and depends only weakly on the simulation of the detector. The data sample collected by OPAL at LEP in 1990 and 1991 is considered. The result is: $$\frac{{\Gamma _{b\bar b} }}{{\Gamma _{had} }} = 0.218 \pm 0.006(stat) \pm 0.007(syst) \pm 0.007(\Gamma _{c\bar c} /\Gamma _{had} ),$$ where the systematic uncertainty due to the charm quark partial width has been separated from the other systematic uncertainties. Combination with previous OPAL measurements gives: $$\frac{{\Gamma _{b\bar b} }}{{\Gamma _{had} }} = 0.220 \pm 0.004(stat) \pm 0.006(syst) \pm 0.006(\Gamma _{c\bar c} /\Gamma _{had} ),$$

Data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP during 1990–1993 are used to measure the time dependence of B d 0 ↔ B d 0 mixing. From a sample of 153 ± 12 events with a charged D∗ and a lepton in the opposite hemisphere, we measure the B d 0 ↔ B d 0 oscillation frequency to be Δmd = 0.57±0.11(stat.)±0.02(syst.) ps−1. This corresponds to an oscillation parameter of xd = ΔmdτBd0 = 0.82±0.16(stat.) ± 0.03(syst.) ± 0.09(syst. τB0d), where the second systematic uncertainty is due to the error in the measured Bd0 lifetime.

This paper describes an analysis of sub-jet multiplicities, which are expected to be sensitive to the properties of soft gluon radiation, in hadronic decays of theZ0. Two- and three-jet event samples are selected using thek⊥ jet clustering algorithm at a jet resolution scaley1. The mean sub-jet multiplicity as a function of the sub-jet resolution,y0, is determined separately for both event samples by reapplying the same jet algorithm at resolution scalesy0

We present measurements of the hadronic photon structure functionF2γ(x), in twoQ2 ranges with mean values of 5.9 GeV2 and 14.7 GeV2. The data were taken by the OPAL experiment at LEP, with\(\sqrt s\) close to theZ0 mass and correspond to an integratede+e− luminosity of 44.8 pb−1. In the context of a QCD-based model we find the quark transverse momentum cutoff separating the vector meson dominance (VMD) and perturbative QCD regions to be 0.27±0.10 GeV. We confirm that there is a significant pointlike component of the photon when the probe photon hasQ2>4 GeV2. Our measurements extend to lower values ofx than any previous experiment, and no increase ofF2γ(x) is observed.

The branching ratios of the τ− → h− π0vτ and τ− → h− ⩾ 2π0vτ decays (where h− is either a π− or K−) are measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The two branching ratios are simultaneously measured using separate selection criteria and are found to be Bh− π0 = (26.25 ± 0.35 ± 0.52)%, Bh− ⩾ 2π0 = (9.89 ± 0.34 ± 0.55)%Bh− π0 + Bh− ⩾ 2π0 = (36.14 ± 0.33 ± 0.58)%, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

The observation and measurement of the time-dependence of B0d↔B0d mixing are described. The B0d meson is reconstructed in final states that contain a D∗− and an l+, where the b flavour of the B0d at decay time is tagged by the electric charge of the lepton. A new and efficient method, using a jet charge technique, is developed for identifying the b flavour of the produced B0d. From a sample of 556 D∗±l∓ candidates reconstructed in the OPAL data collected during 1990–1993, the B0d↔B0d oscillation frequency is measured to be Δmd = 0.508 ± 0.075 (stat) ±0.025(syst) ps−1 giving an oscillation parameter of χd = 0.73 ± 0.11 (stat) ±0.08 (syst), where 0.076 of the systematic error on χd arises from the uncertainty on the B0d lifetime.

We report a study of forward-backward multiplicity correlations and a measurement of the dependence on charged multiplicity of the mean transverse momentum of charged hadrons, measured with respect to the thrust axis. The study was performed on a high statistics sample of Z(0) decays to multihadronic final states collected by the OPAL Collaboration at LEP. The positive forward-backward multiplicity correlation observed in our inclusive sample can be understood in terms of a superposition of distinct event topologies characterized by a different amount of hard gluon radiation (2-, 3- and 4-jet events) and with different mean multiplicities. The residual positive correlation that we see in a clean 2-jet sample can be interpreted in terms of fragmentation properties of different quark flavours and of the production and decay of resonances. We have compared the observed effects with the predictions of QCD-based parton shower models. The data are well described by the Jetset 7.3 Monte Carlo, while Herwig 5.5 does not satisfactorily reproduce the measured correlations. Hard gluon radiation is also shown to be responsible for the observed increase of about 40% in the mean transverse momentum of produced charged hadrons in the multiplicity range from 10 to 30. The comparison with the results obtained in an analysis of a sample enriched in Z(0) --> b $$($) over bar b events, shows that the presence of heavy flavours does not contribute significantly to the observed effect.

PDB83 THE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND BURDEN OF OBESITY AND DIABETES IN FRANCE: A METHODOLOGICAL COMPARISON Moisan C1, Eschwege E2, Basdevant A3, Charles MA2, DiBonaventura MD4, Bonnelye G5 1ROCHE, Neuilly sur Seine Cedex, France, 2INSERM, Villejuif, France, 3Assistance PubliqueHopitaux de Paris, Paris, France, 4Kantar Health, New York, NY, USA, 5Kantar Health, Montrouge , France OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study is to utilize two different methodologies to estimate the prevalence and burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity among the adult population in France. METHODS: Two separate representative data sources were used for the adult French population. Data from the French respondents of the EU National Health and Wellness Survey (NHWS) (N 15,051) and the OBEPI survey (N 25,286) were used. The NHWS is an internet-based annual survey and the OBEPI is a mailed survey conducted every three years, validated by the French authorities. Prevalence information for T2D, comorbid treatments, and BMI were analyzed using both data sources. The humanistic and economic burden of T2D was analyzed only from the NHWS data. RESULTS: From NHWS, 44.3% of respondents from France were male and the average age was 45.1 years (SD 15.5). From OBEPI, 47.8% were male and the average age was 48.2 years (SD 17.8). A total of 30.5% (OBEPI 31.9%) and 15.6% (OBEPI 14.5%) of the French population were estimated to be overweight and obese, respectively. A total of 4.4% (from NHWS) and 4.8% (from OBEPI) of the adult French population reported suffering from T2D. Among these patients, 15.1% and 80.5% were taking an insulin and oral treatment, respectively (12.4% by OHA insulin and 76.0% by OHA only as estimated by OBEPI). From NHWS, a significant burden was observed among patients with T2D as they reported significantly lower levels physical quality of life (using the SF-12v2; 42.6 vs. 50.1, p .05) and significantly greater work impairment (26.7% vs. 18.2%, p .05) and physician visits (8.7 vs. 5.5, p .05). CONCLUSIONS: Both internet and mailed survey methodologies provided consistent prevalence estimates of diabetes and obesity among the French population. Further, despite the high prevalence of treatment, significant effects are observed on health outcomes among T2D patients, highlighting the unmet need.

The fraction of $$b\bar b$$ events in hadronicZ 0 decays has been measured from the yield of leptons in the data samples collected by OPAL in 1990 and 1991. A sample enriched in events containing $${\rm Z}^0 \to b\bar b$$ decays was obtained by requiring the presence of an electron or muon with high momentum and high momentum component transverse to the associated hadronic jet. After accounting for backgrounds and acceptances, a value of $$\frac{{\Gamma ({\rm Z}^0 \to b\bar b)}}{{\Gamma ({\rm Z}^0 \to hadrons)}} = 0.220 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.0006 \pm 0.011$$ was obtained. The first two errors reflect the data statistics and the systematic uncertainties arising from detector modelling uncertainties, respectively. The third error includes systematic effects fromb andc fragmentation and decay uncertainties.

The fractional partial width of theZ0 tob quarks,\(\Gamma _{b\bar b} /\Gamma _{had} \), has been measured by OPAL using an impact parameter technique. The method has been developed using 130 000 hadronic events collected by OPAL in 1990. We find: $$\frac{{\Gamma _{b\bar b} }}{{\Gamma _{had} }} = 0.222 \pm 0.007(stat) \pm 0.008(sys).$$ The measurement assumes the relative rates of theZ0 touds andc quarks given by the Standard Model. Varying the charm fraction from the Standard Model value of\(\Gamma _{c\bar c} /\Gamma _{had} = 0.171\) changes the result by an additional\(\Delta \Gamma _{b\bar b} /\Gamma _{b\bar b} = - 0.135 \times \Delta \Gamma _{c\bar c} /\Gamma _{c\bar c} \).

A measurement is presented of the forwardbackward asymmetry of the processes\(e^ + e^ + \to c\bar c\) and\(e^ + e^ + \to b\bar b\) at centre of mass energies near 91 GeV. Decays of theZ0 into charm and bottom quarks are identified using 6507 chargedD* mesons, reconstructed in the decaysD*±→D0π±→(K∓π±)π±,D*±→D0π±→(K∓π±π0)π± andD*±→D0π±→(K∓π±π∓π±)π±. Thec quark asymmetry on theZ0 peak is measured to be $$A_{FB}^c = 0.052 \pm 0.028(stat.) \pm 0.012(sys.).$$ The energy dependence of the asymmetry has been investigated at energies close to theZ0 peak. Consistency with the predictions of the Standard Model is found.

The cross section and jet rates ofZ0 decays into photons and quarks are compared with matrix element Monte Carlos ofO(ααs). Good agreement is found between data and theoretical predictions. From the ratio of events with three jets plus a photon to those with two jets plus a photon, αs in first order is determined to be 0.176±0.010. Combining the cross section of final state photon events with the LEP average hadronic partial decay width of theZ0, the widths of theZ0 into up and down type quarks can be calculated. The results $$\begin{gathered} \Gamma _{u - type} = 242 \pm 46MeV; \hfill \\ \Gamma _{d - type} = 419 \pm 30MeV \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ are in good agreement with the standard model expectation. A comparison of the measured cross section as a function ofycut with predictions of QCD shower models shows that, at the current level of accuracy ARIADNE and, to a lesser extent, HERWIG and JETSET can reproduce the measurement.

We report on a measurement of the ratio of the strong coupling constants\(\alpha _s (M_{Z^0 } )\) for various data samples with different quark flavour compositions obtained frome+e− annihilation at LEP. We select events with muons, electrons, andD*± mesons from charm and bottom decays, events with highly energeticKs0 mesons originating predominantly from strange quarks, and events with highly energetic stable charged particles from a combination of up, down and strange quarks. From the jet production rates in these events we obtain from these samples the relative value of αs for the individual quark flavours as $$\begin{gathered} \frac{{\alpha _s^b }}{{\alpha _s^{udsc} }} = 1.017 \pm 0.036,\frac{{\alpha _s^c }}{{\alpha _s^{udsb} }} = 0.918 \pm 0.115, \hfill \\ \frac{{\alpha _s^s }}{{\alpha _s^{udcb} }} = 1.158 \pm 0.164,\frac{{\alpha _s^{uds} }}{{\alpha _s^{cb} }} = 1.038 \pm 0.221, \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ with quadratically combined statistical and systematic errors. We also compare the αs values for quarks of diffrent weak isospin, charge and generation. No evidence for a dependence of αs on any of these quark properties is observed. Finally, combining all samples and determining the αsf/αsincl ratio for each flavour, we do not find any dependence of the strong coupling constant on flavour.

A search for unstable, massive photinos pair produced in e + e − collisions has been performed using the OPAL detector at LEP. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 21 pb −1 collected at center-of-mass energies near the Z 0 resonance. The unstable photino is assumed to decay into τ ± / gn l ( l = e or μ ) final states, thereby violating individual lepton numbers and R parity. This search is inspired by a particular model of supersymmetry which is of interest within the context of solar neutrino experiments because it allows for a large neutrino magnetic moment. The present search excludes a large portion of the parameter space allowed by the model.

From a data sample of approximately 240 000 hadronic Z 0 decays recorded during 1991 a sample of about 130 semileptonic B hadron decays containing a D 0 , D + or D ∗+ has been isolated. Using silicon microvertex detector information the decay vertices in these events have been reconstructed. The average B hadron lifetime of the mix of B hadrons in this event sample is measured to be 1.51 −0.14 +0.16 ±0.11 ps. From the distribution of decay times in the different samples the lifetimes of the B 0 and B + mesons are determined to be 1.51 −0.23−0.14 +0.24+0.12 ps and 1.51 −0.28−0.14 +0.30+0.12 ps, respectively. The measured ratio of the B + to B 0 lifetimes of 1.00 −0.25 +0.33 ±0.08 supports expectations that the lifetimes are similar.

A sample of 2610 electron candidates and 2762 muon candidates identified in hadronicZ0 decays has been used to measure the averageb hadron lifetime. These data were recorded with the OPAL detector during 1990 and 1991. Maximum likelihood fits to the distributions of the lepton impact parameters yield an averageb hadron lifetime of $$\tau _b = 1523 \pm 34 \pm 38fs$$ , where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This result is a weighted average over the semileptonic branching fractions and production rates of theb hadrons produced inZ0 decays.

New measurements of the hadronic and leptonic cross sections and of the leptonic forward-backward asymmetries ine+e− collisions are presented. The analysis includes data recorded up to the end of 1991 by the OPAL experiment at LEP, with centre-of-mass energies within ±3 GeV of the Z0 mass. The results are based on a recorded total of 454 000 hadronic and 58 000 leptonic events. A model independent analysis of Z0 parameters based on an extension of the improved Born approximation is presented leading to test of lepton universality and an interpretation of the results within the Standard Model framework. The determination of the mass and width of the Z0 benefit from an improved understanding of the LEP energy calibration.

From a sample of 146900 hadronicZ 0 decays recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP, we have studied the azimuthal correlations of particles in hadronic events. It is expected that these correlations are sensitive to interference effects in QCD. We have compared the data to QCD Monte Carlo models which include and which do not include interference effects. We find that the distributions of azimuthal correlations are not reproduced by the parton shower models we have tested unless interference effects are included, no matter which hadronisation scheme is used.

From a sample of about 450 000 hadronicZ0 decays, measurements of the average\(B^0 - \bar B^0 \) mixing parameter, χ, the branching fraction ofZ0 bosons into hadrons containing bottom quarks,\({{\Gamma (Z^0 \to b\bar b)} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\Gamma (Z^0 \to b\bar b)} {\Gamma (Z^0 \to hadrons)}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\Gamma (Z^0 \to hadrons)}}\), the average semileptonic branching ratios for such hadrons,B(b→l) andB(b→c→l), and the mean scaled energy of these hadrons, 〈xE〉, are presented. The measurements were obtained using a simultaneous fit to single-lepton and dilepton events collected with the OPAL detector at LEP, including both electrons and muons. The results are where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively, in each case. The result forB)b→c→l) excludes decays of the typeb→→l.

The production dynamics of baryon-antibaryon pairs are investigated using hadronic Z0 decays, recorded with the OPAL detector, which contain at least two identified Λ baryons. The rapidly difference for Λ Λ pairs shows the correlations expected from models with a chain-like production of baryon-antibaryon pairs. If the baryon number of a Λ is compensated by a Λ , the Λ is found with a probability of 53% in an interval of ±0.6 around the Λ rapidity. This correlation strength is weaker than predicted by the Herwig Monte Carlo and the Jetset Monte Carlo with a production chain of baryon-antibaryon, and stronger than predicted by the UCLA model. The observed rapidity correlations can be described by the Jetset Monte Carlo with a dominant production chain of baryon-meson-antibaryon, the popcorn mechanism. In addition to the short range correlations, one finds an indication of a correlation of Λ Λ pairs in opposite hemispheres if both the Λ and the Λ have large rapidities. Such long range correlations are expected if the primary quark flavours are compensated in opposite hemispheres and if these quarks are found in energetic baryons. Rates for simultaneous baryon and strangeness number compensation for Λ Λ , Ξ − Ξ + and Ξ − Λ ( Λ + Λ ) are measured and compared with different Monte Carlo models.

This is the post-print version of the Article - Copyright @ 1993 Elsevier. Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section for K∗(892)± production in hadronic decays of the Z0 using a sample of about half a million events recorded with the OPAL experiment at LEP. Charged K∗ mesons are reconstructed in the decay channel K0Sπ±. A mean rate of 0.72±0.02±0.08 K∗ mesons per hadronic event is found. Comparison of the results with predictions of the JETSET and HERWIG models shows that JETSET overestimates the K∗± production cross section while HERWIG is consistent with the data. A sample of three-jet events containing a lepton with high momentum and transverse momentum is selected from hadronic decays of the Z0. The presence of the lepton indicates the semi-leptonic decay of a bottom quark and allows us, in combination with energy ordering of the jets, to distinguish between quark and gluon jets. The sign of the lepton charge is used to identify jets originating from positively and negatively charged quarks, for the jets with the lepton and for the high energy jets. Defining the jet charge by summing the charge of the particles assigned to a jet, it is observed that the mean jet charge of the quark jets is incompatible with zero and that the sign of the jet charge corresponds to that expected from the charge of the primary quark. In contrast, the mean charge of the gluon jets is consistent with zero.

The forward-backward asymmetries of $$e^ + e^ - \to Z^0 \to b\bar b and e^ + e^ - \to Z^0 \to c\bar c$$ have been measured by the OPAL Collaboration using samples of hadronicZ 0 decays in which electron or muon candidates were observed. The asymmetries were measured simultaneously in a two parameter fit, which used the distributions of the track momentum and transverse momentum component with respect to the associated jet to distinguish lepton candidates from different sources. From a sample of 360 000 hadronic events with centre-of-mass energies within ±0.5 GeV of theZ 0 mass and mean energy 91.24. GeV, the values obtained for the $$b\bar b$$ asymmetry before and after correcting, for the effect of $$B^0 \overline {B^0 } $$ mixing, and for the $$c\bar c$$ asymmetry are, respectively: $$\begin{gathered} A_{FB}^{b,mix} = 0.070 \pm 0.014(stat) \pm 0.005(sys), \hfill \\ A_{FB}^b = 0.092 \pm 0.018(stat) \pm 0.007(sys) \hfill \\ \pm 0.003(mix), \hfill \\ A_{FB}^c = 0.014 \pm 0.030(stat) \pm 0.020(sys). \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The measurement of the $$b\bar b$$ asymmetry is confirmed by a measurement using only leptons with high transverse momentum. This sample is highly enriched in semileptonic decays ofb hadrons. Measurements using high transverse momentum leptons were also performed using samples of events with centre-of-mass energies further from theZ 0 mass. After correcting for the effect of $$B^0 \overline {B^0 } $$ mixing, the results are: $$\begin{gathered} A_{FB}^b (\langle \sqrt s \rangle = 89.66GeV) \hfill \\ = 0.071 \pm 0.054(stat) \pm 0.007(sys) \pm 0.002(mix), \hfill \\ A_{FB}^b (\langle \sqrt s \rangle = 92.75GeV) \hfill \\ = 0.131 \pm 0.047(stat) \pm 0.012(sys) \pm 0.004(mix). \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$

A silicon strip microvertex detector has been designed, constructed and commissioned in the OPAL experiment at the LEP electron-positron collider. The microstrip devices incorporate a new FoxFET biassing scheme developed together with Micron Semiconductor Ltd., UK. The devices digitise with a precision close to 5 μm and have an exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratio. The associated microelectronics were all custom made for the OPAL project. The detector began operation in 1991 and has since continued to be part of the OPAL experiment, performing to a very high standard and opening up new areas of physics studies.

Results are reported of a study of neutral vector meson production in multihadronicZ0 decays in the OPAL experiment at LEP. Pions and kaons have been identified by specific ionisation energy loss andK±π∓ andK+K− mass spectra have been fitted, in bins of the scaled momentum variablexp, to combinations of resonance signals and non-resonant backgrounds. Rates are given forK*(892)° and o(1020), and production cross sections are compared to the predictions of Monte Carlo models. Overall multiplicities have been determined as 0.76±0.07±0.06K*(892)° and 0.086±0.015±0.010 o(1020) per hadronicZ0 decay (the quoted errors are respectively statistical and systematic). Momentum dependent distortions of the ππ mass spectra, possibly associated indirectly with Bose-Einstein effects, have prevented reliable measurement of the ρ(770)° cross section in this study.

We present an analysis of multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced inZ 0 hadronic decays. The results are based on the analysis of 82941 events collected within 100 MeV of theZ 0 peak energy with the OPAL detector at LEP. The charged particle multiplicity distribution, corrected for initial-state radiation and for detector acceptance and resolution, was found to have a mean 〈n ch〉=21.40±0.02(stat.)±0.43(syst.) and a dispersionD=6.49±0.02(stat.)±0.20(syst.). The shape is well described by the Lognormal and Gamma distributions. A negative binomial parameterisation was found to describe the shape of the multiplicity distribution less well. A comparison with results obtained at lower energies confirms the validity of KNO(-G) scaling up to LEP energies. A separate analysis of events with low sphericity, typically associated with two-jet final states, shows the presence of features expected for models based on a stochastic production mechanism for particles. In all cases, the features observed in the data are well described by the Lund parton shower model JETSET.
