The most typical observational features of solar radio spikes are their short duration and narrow bandwidth. For these characteristics, we have improved the YOLOv5s network model, by adding inclined bounding frames, and attention and feature fusion mechanism modules. The decimeter- and meterwavelength spikes observed by the Solar Broad-band Radio Spectrometer in Huairou and the spectrograph in the Chashan Solar Radio Observatory are used to carry out experiments, respectively. The results demonstrate that the AP value obtained by the improved network is 74%, which is almost 14% higher than the original network. The improved network detects 9709 (1379) decimeter- (meter-) wavelength spikes in two events with the durations, bandwidths, relative bandwidths, and frequency-drift rates. The spikes at decimeter and meter wavelengths are categorized again based on their frequency-drift rates, such as, positive, negative, and no measurable frequency-drift rates, respectively. We have carried out a statistical study on these categorized spikes. An interesting finding is that the distribution of relative bandwidths at decimeter wavelengths is changed after the classification. The distribution is asymmetric without the classification. However, after the classification the positive, negative, and no measurable frequency-drift spikes show a symmetrical distribution. These statistical results and findings provide constraints on the formation of solar radio spikes.

We conducted a deep XMM$\unicode{x2013}$Newton observing campaign on the 23.5-s radio pulsar PSR J0250+5854 in order to better understand the connection between long-period, radio-emitting neutron stars and their high-energy-emitting counterparts. No X-ray emission was detected resulting in an upper limit in the bolometric luminosity of PSR J0250+5854 of $, 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Of the more than $3{,}000$ radio pulsars currently known, only ${\sim}300$ are in binary systems, and only five of these consist of young pulsars with massive non-degenerate companions. We present the discovery and initial timing, accomplished using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment telescope (CHIME), of the sixth such binary pulsar, PSR J2108+4516, a $0.577$-s radio pulsar in a 269-day orbit of eccentricity 0.09 with a companion of minimum mass $11$ M$_{\odot}$. Notably, the pulsar undergoes periods of substantial eclipse, disappearing from the CHIME $400{-}800$ MHz observing band for a large fraction of its orbit, and displays significant dispersion measure and scattering variations throughout its orbit, pointing to the possibility of a circumstellar disk or very dense stellar wind associated with the companion star. Subarcsecond resolution imaging with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array unambiguously demonstrates that the companion is a bright, $V \simeq 11$ OBe star, EM* UHA 138, located at a distance of $3.26(14)$ kpc. Archival optical observations of \companion{} approximately suggest a companion mass ranging from $17.5$ M$_{\odot} < M_{\rm c} < 23$ M$_{\odot}$, in turn constraining the orbital inclination angle to $50.3^{\circ} \lesssim i \lesssim 58.3^{\circ}$. Discovering radio pulsars, particularly millisecond pulsars (MSPs), is important for a range of astrophysical applications, such as testing theories of gravity or probing the magneto-ionic interstellar medium. We aim to discover pulsars that may have been missed in previous pulsar searches by leveraging known pulsar observables (primarily polarisation) in the sensitive, low-frequency radio images from the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), and have commenced the Targeted search, using LoTSS images, for polarised pulsars (TULIPP) survey. For this survey, we identified linearly and circularly polarised point sources with flux densities brighter than 2 mJy in LoTSS images at a centre frequency of 144 MHz with a 48 MHz bandwidth. Over 40 known pulsars, half of which are MSPs, were detected as polarised sources in the LoTSS images and excluded from the survey. We have obtained beam-formed LOFAR observations of 30 candidates, which were searched for pulsations using coherent de-dispersion. Here, we present the results of the first year of the TULIPP survey. We discovered two pulsars, PSRs J1049+5822 and J1602+3901, with rotational periods of P=0.73 s and 3.7 ms, respectively. We also detected a further five known pulsars (two slowly-rotating pulsars and three MSPs) for which accurate sky positions were not available to allow a unique cross-match with LoTSS sources. This targeted survey presents a relatively efficient method by which pulsars, particularly MSPs, may be discovered using the flexible observing modes of sensitive radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array and its pathfinders/precursors, particularly since wide-area all-sky surveys using coherent de-dispersion are currently computationally infeasible., 15 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. We present new discoveries and results from long-term timing of 72 pulsars discovered in the Arecibo PALFA survey, including precise determination of astrometric and spin parameters, and flux density and scatter broadening measurements at 1.4 GHz. Notable discoveries include two young pulsars (characteristic ages $\sim$30 kyr) with no apparent supernova remnant associations, three mode changing, 12 nulling and two intermittent pulsars. We detected eight glitches in five pulsars. Among them is PSR J1939+2609, an apparently old pulsar (characteristic age $\sim$1 Gy), and PSR J1954+2529, which likely belongs to a newly-emerging class of binary pulsars. The latter is the only pulsar among the 72 that is clearly not isolated: a non-recycled neutron star with a 931-ms spin period in an eccentric ($e\,=\,0.114$) wide ($P_b\,=\,82.7\,$d) orbit with a companion of undetermined nature having a minimum mass of $\sim0.6\,M_{\odot}$. Since operations at Arecibo ceased in 2020 August, we give a final tally of PALFA sky coverage, and compare its 207 pulsar discoveries to the known population. On average, they are 50% more distant than other Galactic plane radio pulsars; PALFA millisecond pulsars (MSP) have twice the dispersion measure per unit spin period than the known population of MSP in the Plane. The four intermittent pulsars discovered by PALFA more than double the population of such objects, which should help to improve our understanding of pulsar magnetosphere physics. The statistics for these, RRATS, and nulling pulsars suggest that there are many more of these objects in the Galaxy than was previously thought., 39 pages, 18 figures, 9 tables. The LOFAR Tied-Array All-Sky Survey (LOTAAS) is the most sensitive untargeted radio pulsar survey performed at low radio frequencies (119--151\,MHz) to date and has discovered 76 new radio pulsars, among which the 23.5-s pulsar J0250+5854, up until recently the slowest-spinning radio pulsar known. Here, we report on the timing solutions of 35 pulsars discovered by LOTAAS, which include a nulling pulsar and a mildly recycled pulsar, and thereby complete the full timing analysis of the LOTAAS pulsar discoveries. We give an overview of the findings from the full LOTAAS sample of 76 pulsars, discussing their pulse profiles, radio spectra and timing parameters. We found that the pulse profiles of some of the pulsars show profile variations in time or frequency and while some pulsars show signs of scattering, a large majority display no pulse broadening. The LOTAAS discoveries have on average steeper radio spectra and have longer spin periods ($1.4\times$) as well as lower spin-down rates ($3.1\times$) compared to the known pulsar population. We discuss the cause of these differences, and attribute them to a combination of selection effects of the LOTAAS survey as well as previous pulsar surveys, though can not rule out that older pulsars tend to have steeper radio spectra., Comment: Accepted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

The lithium-ion battery is the source of renewable energy and the battery-operated vehicles are gradually replacing fossil fuel-based automobiles. Though Electric Vehicles (EVs) do not produce emissions through tailpipes, yet the issues pertaining to recycling of the lithium-ion batteries employed in EVs lead to environmental burdens. The EVs sale in global market exceeds a million per year. It is estimated that there will be a huge amount of unprocessed waste of lithium-ion battery packs when these vehicles retire after the service life. The re-use of batteries can reduce the waste generation, however the cumulative burden of the battery wastes will be substantial considering the increasing trend of the electric-vehicle market. There are various methods employed for recycling of lithium-ion batteries. The existing literature reports that their environmental impact is significant. The challenge is to choose a method which causes minimal disruptions to the environment in terms of cost, pollution and energy consumption, which can be effectively addressed by a life cycle analysis based selection method. In this paper, a review is conducted on the current recycling technologies and WPM (Weighted Product Method) based Multi-Criteria Approach is employed to optimally choose the best recycling process for lithium-ion batteries from life cycle perspective.

We report results from continued timing observations of PSR J0740+6620, a high-mass, 2.8-ms radio pulsar in orbit with a likely ultra-cool white dwarf companion. Our data set consists of combined pulse arrival-time measurements made with the 100-m Green Bank Telescope and the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment telescope. We explore the significance of timing-based phenomena arising from general-relativistic dynamics and variations in pulse dispersion. When using various statistical methods, we find that combining $\sim 1.5$ years of additional, high-cadence timing data with previous measurements confirms and improves upon previous estimates of relativistic effects within the PSR J0740+6620 system, with the pulsar mass $m_{\rm p} = 2.08^{+0.07}_{-0.07}$ M$_\odot$ (68.3\% credibility) determined by the relativistic Shapiro time delay. For the first time, we measure secular variation in the orbital period and argue that this effect arises from apparent acceleration due to significant transverse motion. After incorporating contributions from Galactic differential rotation and off-plane acceleration in the Galactic potential, we obtain a model-dependent distance of $d = 1.14^{+0.17}_{-0.15}$ kpc (68.3\% credibility). This improved distance confirms the ultra-cool nature of the white dwarf companion determined from recent optical observations. We discuss the prospects for future observations with next-generation facilities, which will likely improve the precision on $m_{\rm p}$ for J0740+6620 by an order of magnitude within the next few years., Final version after minor corrections during referee process. We report the discovery of seven new Galactic pulsars with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment's Fast Radio Burst backend (CHIME/FRB). These sources were first identified via single pulses in CHIME/FRB, then followed up with CHIME/Pulsar. Four sources appear to be rotating radio transients (RRATs), pulsar-like sources with occasional single pulse emission with an underlying periodicity. Of those four sources, three have detected periods ranging from 220 ms to 2.726 s. Three sources have more persistent but still intermittent emission and are likely intermittent or nulling pulsars. We have determined phase-coherent timing solutions for the latter three. We report on the multi-frequency timing observations of 21 pulsars discovered in the LOFAR Tied-Array All-Sky Survey (LOTAAS). The timing data were taken at central frequencies of 149 MHz (LOFAR) as well as 334 and 1532 MHz (Lovell Telecope). The sample of pulsars includes 20 isolated pulsars and the first binary pulsar discovered by the survey, PSR J1658$+$3630. We modelled the timing properties of the pulsars, which showed that they have, on average, larger characteristic ages. We present the pulse profiles of the pulsars across the three observing bands, where PSR J1643$+$1338 showed profile evolution that appears not to be well-described by the radius-to-frequency-mapping model. Furthermore, we modelled the spectra of the pulsars across the same observing bands, using a simple power law, and found an average spectral index of $-1.9 \pm 0.5$. Amongst the pulsars studied here, PSR J1657$+$3304 showed large flux density variations of a factor of 10 over 300 days, as well as mode changing and nulling on timescales of a few minutes. We modelled the rotational and orbital properties of PSR J1658$+$3630, which has a spin period of 33 ms in a binary orbit of 3.0 days with a companion of minimum mass of 0.87$M_{\odot}$, likely a Carbon-Oxygen or Oxygen-Neon-Magnesium type white dwarf. Background Endoscopy units across Canada are being challenged to meet the growing demand for procedures despite limited resources, highlighting the need to optimize endoscopy unit efficiency. Earlier studies have found that non-procedural factors, such as room turnover, represent an ideal target to improve efficiency. Aims The objective of this research project was to identify practices that will improve efficiency for routine outpatient gastrointestinal (GI) procedures at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC). There were 2 sub-aims: 1) to understand practices at Toronto hospitals that shorten room turnover time and 2) to describe the variation in room turnover time at SHSC. Methods Sub-aim #1: A survey of endoscopy units at five other Toronto hospitals was completed. Questions were designed to gain a better understanding of routine practices and any initiatives undertaken to improve room turnover efficiency. Sub-aim #2: Median room turnover time from April 2018 to March 2019, defined as ‘patient out’ to ‘patient in’, was reported in an anonymized fashion for the following categories: 1) by endoscopist, 2) by nurse, and 3) by unique endoscopist-nurse pair. Only data from routine outpatient endoscopic procedures (e.g. colonoscopy, gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy) were included. In order to evaluate turnover times by endoscopist-nurse pair, consecutive cases not performed by the same pair were excluded. Procedures affected by patient- and transportation-related delays were also excluded. Results Of the five centers surveyed, three allocated 5 minutes for turnover and two allocated 10 minutes. All centers reported tracking turnover time and four centers reported undertaking initiatives to decrease turnover time such as involving a flow team, hiring team attendants, and sharing performance data. Over the 12-month period, 2504 routine outpatient GI endoscopic procedures were performed at SHSC, with 803 cases meeting inclusion criteria. Median turnover time for the unit was 6 minutes, ranging from 5 to 9 minutes across endoscopists, 5 to 7 minutes across nurses, and 3 to 10 minutes across unique endoscopist-nurse pairs (Figure 1). Efficiency of endoscopist-nurse pairs did not correlate with the number of cases performed as a pair over the 12-month period. Conclusions Endoscopy room turnover times at SHSC are similar to those reported by other local centers, with important variation across endoscopists and nurses. The next phase of this study will involve directly observing each of the most and least efficient individuals and pairs and recording common practices. It is anticipated that these findings will enable us to identify efficient practices that should be incorporated into standard operating procedures and training for endoscopy room personnel. We present the design, implementation and performance of a digital backend constructed for the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) that uses accelerated computing to observe radio pulsars and transient radio sources. When operating, the CHIME correlator outputs 10 independent streams of beamformed data for the CHIME/Pulsar backend that digitally track specified celestial positions. Each of these independent streams are processed by the CHIME/Pulsar backend system which can coherently dedisperse, in real-time, up to dispersion measure values of 2500 pc/cm$^{-3}$ . The tracking beams and real-time analysis system are autonomously controlled by a priority-based algorithm that schedules both known sources and positions of interest for observation with observing cadences as small as one day. Given the distribution of known pulsars and radio-transient sources, the CHIME/Pulsar system can monitor up to 900 positions once per sidereal day and observe all sources with declinations greater than $-20^\circ$ once every $\sim$2 weeks. Magnetars are highly magnetized young neutron stars that occasionally produce enormous bursts and flares of X-rays and gamma-rays. Of the approximately thirty magnetars currently known in our Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds, five have exhibited transient radio pulsations. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration bursts of radio waves arriving from cosmological distances. Some have been seen to repeat. A leading model for repeating FRBs is that they are extragalactic magnetars, powered by their intense magnetic fields. However, a challenge to this model has been that FRBs must have radio luminosities many orders of magnitude larger than those seen from known Galactic magnetars. Here we report the detection of an extremely intense radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) FRB project. The fluence of this two-component bright radio burst and the estimated distance to SGR 1935+2154 together imply a 400-800 MHz burst energy of $\sim 3 \times 10^{34}$ erg, which is three orders of magnitude brighter than those of any radio-emitting magnetar detected thus far. Such a burst coming from a nearby galaxy would be indistinguishable from a typical FRB. This event thus bridges a large fraction of the radio energy gap between the population of Galactic magnetars and FRBs, strongly supporting the notion that magnetars are the origin of at least some FRBs., Comment: Submitted to Nature. We are using the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) to perform the LOFAR Tied-Array All-Sky (LOTAAS) survey for pulsars and fast transients. Here, we present the astrometric and rotational parameters of 20 pulsars discovered as part of LOTAAS. These pulsars have regularly been observed with LOFAR at 149 MHz and the Lovell telescope at 1532 MHz, supplemented by some observations with the Lovell telescope at 334 MHz and the Nançay Radio Telescope at 1484 MHz. Timing models are calculated for the 20 pulsars, some of which are among the slowest spinning pulsars known. PSR J1236 − 0159 rotates with a period P ∼ 3.6 s, while five additional pulsars show P > 2 s. Also, the spin-down rates P˙P˙ are, on average, low, with PSR J0815 + 4611 showing P˙∼4×10−18. Some of the pulse profiles, generically single-peaked, present complex shapes evolving with frequency. Multifrequency flux measurements show that these pulsars have generically relatively steep spectra but exceptions are present, with values ranging between ∼−4 and −1. Among the pulsar sample, a large fraction shows large single-pulse variability, with four pulsars being undetectable more than 15 per cent15 per cent of the time and one tentatively classified as a Rotating Radio Transient. Two single-peaked pulsars show drifting sub-pulses.

The LOFAR Tied Array All-Sky Survey (LOTAAS) is an ongoing all northern sky survey for pulsars and transients. It is one of the first large scale pulsar surveys conducted at an observing frequency below 200 MHz. The unique set-up of the survey is the simultaneous formation of 222 beams for each survey pointing by coherently adding signals from the central 6 LOFAR stations. This represents the first SKA-like pulsar survey. As of 12 September 2017, the survey has completed 1456 pointings, more than two-thirds of the total. The survey has discovered 61 new pulsars via Fourier-based periodicity searches and a further 5 via single pulse searches. I present the survey approach and distinctive features including a discussion of an improved machine learning classifier used to identify the best candidates produced by the pipeline for further investigation. I present a summary of the discoveries so far including the first binary pulsar and the pulsar with the longest spin period of 23.5 s.

We present an overview of the LOFAR Tied-Array All-Sky Survey (LOTAAS) for radio pulsars and fast transients. The survey uses the high-band antennas of the LOFAR Superterp, the dense inner part of the LOFAR core, to survey the northern sky (dec > 0 deg) at a central observing frequency of 135 MHz. A total of 219 tied-array beams (coherent summation of station signals, covering 12 square degrees), as well as three incoherent beams (covering 67 square degrees) are formed in each survey pointing. For each ofthe 222 beams, total intensity is recorded at 491.52 us time resolution. Each observation integrates for 1 hr and covers 2592 channels from 119 to 151 MHz. This instrumental setup allows LOTAAS to reach a detection threshold of 1 to 5 mJy for periodic emission. Thus far, the LOTAAS survey has resulted in the discovery of 73 radio pulsars. Among these are two mildly recycled binary millisecond pulsars (P = 13 and 33 ms), as well as the slowest-spinning radio pulsar currently known (P = 23.5 s). The survey has thus far detected 311 known pulsars, with spin periods ranging from 4 ms to 5.0 s and dispersion measures from 3.0 to 217 pc/cc. Known pulsars are detected at flux densities consistent with literature values. We find that the LOTAAS pulsar discoveries have, on average, longer spin periods than the known pulsar population. This may reflect different selection biases between LOTAAS and previous surveys, though it is also possible that slower-spinning pulsars preferentially have steeper radio spectra. LOTAAS is the deepest all-sky pulsar survey using a digital aperture array; we discuss some of the lessons learned that can inform the approach for similar surveys using future radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array., 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We determined Faraday rotation measures (RMs) towards 137 pulsars in the northern sky, using Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) observations at 110-190 MHz. This low-frequency RM catalogue, the largest to date, improves the precision of existing RM measurements on average by a factor of 20 - due to the low frequency and wide bandwidth of the data, aided by the RM synthesis method. We report RMs towards 25 pulsars for the first time. The RMs were corrected for ionospheric Faraday rotation to increase the accuracy of our catalogue to approximately 0.1 rad m$^{\rm -2}$. The ionospheric RM correction is currently the largest contributor to the measurement uncertainty. In addition, we find that the Faraday dispersion functions towards pulsars are extremely Faraday thin - mostly less than 0.001 rad m$^{\rm -2}$. We use these new precise RM measurements (in combination with existing RMs, dispersion measures, and distance estimates) to estimate the scale height of the Galactic halo magnetic field: 2.0$\pm$0.3 kpc for Galactic quadrants I and II above and below the Galactic plane (we also evaluate the scale height for these regions individually). Overall, our initial low-frequency catalogue provides valuable information about the 3-D structure of the Galactic magnetic field., 31 pages, including 13 figures, 6 tables. In order to solve the problem of delayed departure of vessels in container ports and improve the efficiency of yard operation, a mathematical programming model of yard template planning based on vessels’ operation time was proposed to optimize the number of vessels loading points and put the operation time of vessels into constraints to avoid delayed departure of vessel. At the same time, transportation distance is put into the objective function to minimize transportation cost of containers. The numerical experiments are designed, which is solved by CPLEX solver to verify the validity of the model. The experimental results show that the mathematical model can deal with the problem of delayed departure of vessel.

Searches for millisecond-duration, dispersed single pulses have become a standard tool used during radio pulsar surveys in the last decade. They have enabled the discovery of two new classes of sources: rotating radio transients and fast radio bursts. However, we are now in a regime where the sensitivity to single pulses in radio surveys is often limited more by the strong background of radio frequency interference (RFI, which can greatly increase the false-positive rate) than by the sensitivity of the telescope itself. To mitigate this problem, we introduce the Single-pulse Searcher (SpS). This is a new machine-learning classifier designed to identify astrophysical signals in a strong RFI environment, and optimized to process the large data volumes produced by the new generation of aperture array telescopes. It has been specifically developed for the LOFAR Tied-Array All-Sky Survey (LOTAAS), an ongoing survey for pulsars and fast radio transients in the northern hemisphere. During its development, SpS discovered 7 new pulsars and blindly identified ~80 known sources. The modular design of the software offers the possibility to easily adapt it to other studies with different instruments and characteristics. Indeed, SpS has already been used in other projects, e.g. to identify pulses from the fast radio burst source FRB 121102. One of the biggest challenges arising from modern large-scale pulsar surveys is the number of candidates generated. Here, we implemented several improvements to the machine learning (ML) classifier previously used by the LOFAR Tied-Array All-Sky Survey (LOTAAS) to look for new pulsars via filtering the candidates obtained during periodicity searches. To assist the ML algorithm, we have introduced new features which capture the frequency and time evolution of the signal and improved the signal-to-noise calculation accounting for broad profiles. We enhanced theML classifier by including a third class characterizing RFI instances, allowing candidates arising from RFI to be isolated, reducing the false positive return rate. We also introduced a new training data set used by the ML algorithm that includes a large sample of pulsars misclassified by the previous classifier. Lastly, we developed an ensemble classifier comprised of five different Decision Trees. Taken together these updates improve the pulsar recall rate by 2.5 per cent, while also improving the ability to identify pulsars with wide pulse profiles, often misclassified by the previous classifier. The new ensemble classifier is also able to reduce the percentage of false positive candidates identified from each LOTAAS pointing from 2.5 per cent (~500 candidates) to 1.1 per cent (~220 candidates).

Metal carbonyl complexes were used for studying the gas-phase chemical behavior of Mo, Ru, W and Os isotopes with an on-line low temperature isothermal gas chromatography apparatus. Short-lived Mo and Ru isotopes were produced by a 252Cf spontaneous fission source. Short-lived nuclides of W and Os were produced using the heavy ion reactions 19F +159Tb and 165Ho, respectively. Short-lived products were thermalized in a recoil chamber filled with a gas mixture of helium and carbon monoxide. The carbonyls formed were then transported through capillaries to an isothermal chromatography column for study of the adsorption behavior as a function of temperature. On-line isothermal chromatography (IC) experiments on Teflon (PTFE) and quartz surfaces showed that short-lived isotopes of the listed elements can form carbonyl complexes which are very volatile and interact most likely in physical sorption processes. Deduced adsorption enthalpies of Mo and Ru carbonyls were − 38 ± 2 kJ/mol and − 36 ± 2 kJ/mol, respectively. These values are in good agreement with literature data, partly obtained with different chromatographic techniques. A validation of the applied Monte Carlo model to deduce adsorption enthalpies with Mo isotopes of different half-lives proved the validity of the underlying adsorption model. The investigations using a gas-jet system coupled to a heavy ion accelerator without any preseparator clearly showed the limitations of the approach. The He and CO gas mixture, which was directly added into the chamber, will result in decomposition of CO gas and produce some aerosol particles. After the experiment of 173W and 179Os in the heavy ion experiments, the Teflon column was covered by a yellowish deposit; the adsorption enthalpy of W and Os carbonyls could therefore not be properly deduced using Monte Carlo simulations.

Topical keratolytic agents such as benzoyl peroxide (BP) and salicylic acid (SA) are one of the common treatments for inflammatory skin diseases. However, the amount of drug delivery through the skin is limited due to the stratum corneum. The purposes of this study were to investigate the ability of fish oil to act as penetration enhancer for topical keratolytic agents and to determine the suitable gelator for formulating stable fish oil oleogels. 2 types of gelling agents, beeswax and sorbitan monostearate (Span 60), were used to formulate oleogels. To investigate the efficacy of fish oil oleogel permeation, commercial hydrogels of benzoyl peroxide (BP) and salicylic acid (SA) were used as control, and comparative analysis was performed using Franz diffusion cell. Stability of oleogels was determined by physical assessments at 20°C and 40°C storage. Benzoyl peroxide (BP) fish oil oleogels containing beeswax were considered as better formulations in terms of drug permeation and cumulative drug release. All the results were found to be statistically significant (p0.05, ANOVA) and it was concluded that the beeswax-fish oil combination in oleogel can prove to be beneficial in terms of permeation across the skin and stability.

This study uses the nanoindentation technique to evaluate the mechanical properties of thin copper films at indentation depths measured in the order of nanometers. Copper films with various thicknesses are deposited on a single crystal silicon wafer with a (100) orientation and on a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) substrate, respectively. The experimental results show that for soft thin films on a hard substrate, the substrate effect is negligible when the indentation depth is less than 20% of the film thickness. However, the results suggest that hard films on a soft substrate should be treated as a composite system in indentation because the substrate effect is significant. Finally, the results reveal that a significant indentation size effect exists for thin films with a thickness of less than 100nm. A number of possible reasons for the depth dependence of the hardness properties at ultra-shallow indentation depths are proposed and discussed.

Load forecasting is an issue that needs to be addressed to prevent overloading and catastrophic blackouts in power grids. This paper proposes a dual cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) neural network which is able to give an accurate very short term prediction of the required load curve. This is the first time a CMAC algorithm has been employed for load forecasting. The paper depicts that the proposed method has the advantage of reduced training time and reduced computational requirements as compared to the other load forecasting techniques. The data of the south west interconnected system was employed to give load predictions whilst using the proposed dual CMAC and back propagation neural network. The performance evolution has shown that the proposed dual CMAC neural network works efficiently and accurately for very short term load forecasting scenarios as compared to other conventional load forecasting techniques.

This paper models and analyzes flows in linear and curved microchannels on a rotating Laboratory Compact Disk (LabCD). The effects of centrifugal force are introduced into the governing equations of the microchannel flow to promote the fluidic velocity in the microchannel. The microchannel types on the LabCD must be designed following a process of mathematical identification. A flow model which takes into account the combined effects of viscosity, capillary forces, pressure difference and rotation is developed. A reduction-order technique is applied to obtain linear and nonlinear governing equations for flows in straight and curviform microchannels, respectively. The analytical solutions for the flow in the tubular microchannel are obtained using the Laplace transform method, while the numerical solutions for the curviform microchannel or microchannel with a varying cross-section are obtained using a piecewise linear method. The results show that the analyzed models are easily presented by a mathematical expression for the case of a tubular microchannel and simulated using a numerical program for the case of special microchannels. The modeling presented in this paper enables the performance of LabCD devices to be significantly enhanced by providing insights into the fluid flow behavior in microchannels of varying configurations under different rotational velocities.

Our biochemical analyses demonstrate that RNA Pol I can transcribe through nucleosome templates and that this requires structural rearrangement of the nucleosomal core particle. The subunits of the histone chaperone FACT (facilitates chromatin transcription), SSRP1 and Spt16, co-purify and co-immunoprecipitate with mammalian Pol I complexes. In cells, SSRP1 is detectable at the rRNA gene repeats. Crucially, siRNA-mediated repression of FACT subunit expression in cells results in a significant reduction in 47S pre-rRNA levels, whereas synthesis of the first 40 nt of the rRNA is not affected, implying that FACT is important for Pol I transcription elongation through chromatin. FACT also associates with RNA Pol III complexes, is present at the chromatin of genes transcribed by Pol III and facilitates their transcription in cells. Our findings indicate that, beyond the established role in Pol II transcription, FACT has physiological functions in chromatin transcription by all three nuclear RNA Pols. Our data also imply that local chromatin dynamics influence transcription of the active rRNA genes by Pol I and of Pol III-transcribed genes.

The emergence of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in healthcare applications is gaining momentum through the increasing array of wearable vital sign sensors and location tags which can track both healthcare personnel and patient status/ location continuously in real-time mode. Despite the increased range of potential application frameworks -- ranging from pre-hospital, in-hospital, ambulatory and home monitoring, to long-term database collection for longitudinal trend analysis -- the security gap between existing WSN designs and the requirements of medical applications remains unresolved. Generally, WSN devices are extremely limited in terms of power, computation, and communication. They are often deployed in accessible areas, thus increasing security vulnerabilities. The dynamic ad hoc topology, multicast transmission, location awareness, critical data prioritisation, and co-ordination of diverse sensors of healthcare applications further exacerbate the security challenges. This paper presents an analysis of various WSN security mechanisms from the demanding perspective of healthcare applications, and considers the importance of security to the successful deployment of pervasive computing solutions in the healthcare industry.

Recent growth in wirelessly connected devices shows no signs of slowing, and indeed with new services and new technologies waiting in the wings, usage of wireless terminals looks set to continue increasing rapidly. However, radio spectrum is finite and in a wirelessly connected future, new approaches to ensuring connectivity and quality of service are going to be needed. Radio resource management has an important part to play in ensuring that the very best is obtained from the finite resources available for radio communications in the future. This paper considers the characteristics of current end emerging wireless networks, and aspects of radio resource management that may offer the performance gains needed to ensure end-to-end quality of service is met.

Wireless telemedicine is a new and evolving area in telemedical and telecare systems. Healthcare personnel require realtime access to accurate patient data, including clinical histories, treatments, medication, tests, laboratory results and insurance information. With large-scale wireless networks and mobile computing solutions, such as cellular 3G, Wi-Fi mesh and WiMAX, healthcare personnal can tap into vital information anywhere and at any time within the healthcare networks. The recent introduction of pervasive computing, consisting of radio frequency identification (RFID), Bluetooth, ZigBee, and wireless sensor networks, further extends the potential for exploitation of wireless telecommunications and its integration into new mobile healthcare delivery systems. In this paper, snapshots of current uses and future trends of various wireless communications in the healthcare domain are highlighted. Special attention is given to the challenges of a telemedicine environment equipped with different wireless technologies and how the resulting issues might be addressed in medical services integration to provide flexible, convenient and economical medical monitoring, consultation and healthcare.

Five species of Araceae plants were successfully cultured via in vitro methods. Multiple shoots were induced from four Araceae species, Alocasia sanderina, Colocasia antiquorum, Gonatanthus pumilus and Syngonium podophylum., when the axillary buds were cultured in Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with 2.0 mg l -1 N 6 -benzyladenine (BA) and 0.5 mg l -1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Basic MS medium supplemented with only 2.0 mg l -1 BA was found to be the most suitable medium for induction of multiple shoots in Caladium hortulanum and Caladium bicolor 'Florida Crown'. However, the same medium did not induce multiple shoot formation for Caladium humboldtii. The in vitro shoot microcuttings of these five Araceae species produced roots when cultured in basic MS medium to form complete plantlets. All the rooted in vitro plantlets (100%) survived when transferred to the outside environment after acclimatization for two weeks in an incubator at 25°C.

A modal survey was performed on eight posttensioned reinforced concrete beams removed during the demolition of a highway bridge in the United Kingdom. The aim of the study was to continue investigations into using vibration data for the structural health monitoring of bridges. The use of modal data to distinguish between beams with different damage levels and between modified and unmodified beams was inconclusive. However, there were clear differences in the shape of the measured frequency response functions (FRFs), which suggested that this might be a better classifier. The method of principal component analysis was used to reduce the FRF data dimensionality, and when this was done, it was possible to clearly distinguish between damaged and modified beams using only a two-dimensional feature vector. To distinguish between beams with different damage levels, feature vectors with more components were used in conjunction with a generalized linear artificial neural network. This approach successfully classified the beams according to damage level, although more beams need to be tested to improve the reliability and general applicability of the method.

Impaired vascular beta-adrenergic responsiveness may play an important role in the development and/or maintenance of hypertension. This defect has been associated with an alteration in receptor/guanine nucleotide regulatory protein (G-protein) interactions. However, the locus of this defect remains unclear. G-Protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) phosphorylate serine/threonine residues on G-protein-linked receptors in an agonist-dependent manner. GRK activation mediates reduced receptor responsiveness and impaired receptor/G-protein coupling. To determine whether the impairment in beta-adrenergic response in human hypertension might be associated with altered GRK activity, we studied lymphocytes from younger hypertensive subjects as compared with older and younger normotensive subjects. We assessed GRK activity by rhodopsin phosphorylation and GRK expression by immunoblot. GRK activity was significantly increased in lymphocytes from younger hypertensive subjects and paralleled an increase in GRK-2 (beta ARK-1) protein expression. In contrast, no alterations in cAMP-dependent kinase (A-kinase) activity or GRK-5/6 expression were noted. GRK activity was not increased in lymphocytes from older normotensive subjects who demonstrated a similar impairment in beta-adrenergic-mediated adenylyl cyclase activation. These studies indicate that GRK activity is selectively increased in lymphocytes from hypertensive subjects. The increase in GRK activity may underlie the reduction in beta-adrenergic responsiveness characteristic of the hypertensive state.

A survey of Singaporean SMEs was carried out to determine the relationship between the growth of local SMEs and the characteristics of owners and the firm. The study analysed both the demographic and psychological attributes of the owners, as well as firm attributes, such as size and age of the firm. Regression models were constructed to determine the relationship between the growth of SMEs and owners' and firms' characteristics. The results show that the educational level and working experience of owners, their need for achievement and internal locus of control, as well as the age of the business, and the ability of the business to attract government grants correlate significantly with the growth of the firm.

Based on the 2011 ITRS road map, the greater accessibility of higher number of TSVs in a specified area depends on the smarter miniaturization of the interconnect dimension in 3D IC packaging. Scaling down the TSV dimension has an inevitable effect on resistance, capacitance, signal transmission as well as the thermo-mechanical stress. We report that the lowering of the TSV diameter is permissible under thermo-mechanical stress consideration. However, the signal transmission delay explodes rapidly and could be tunable via controlling the liner layer capacitance or/and using alternative filler materials.

This paper provides an overview of cases seen by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) medical and surgical teams in the 2009 Sumatra earthquake and discusses the role of militaries in the acute phase of a disaster.Two SAF primary healthcare clinics prospectively collected patient medical information for comparison. Descriptive analysis of the Emergency Department (ED) and surgical case records was performed.1,015 patients were seen by the two primary healthcare clinics. In both Koto Bangko and Pariaman, respiratory-related conditions were the most common diagnoses (47.2% and 30.6%, respectively), followed by musculoskeletal/joint conditions (31.6% and 20.6%, respectively). In the ED, 55% and 27% of the 113 patients had trauma-related and infective-related diagnoses, respectively. Lacerations and contusions were the most common forms of trauma. Lung infection was the most common infective diagnosis seen at the ED. The number of ED cases was high during the first week and gradually declined in the second week. 56% of the 102 surgical procedures were performed on dirty or infective wounds. Fractures requiring fixation comprised 38% of surgical procedures.Medical aid remains an important component of the overall humanitarian response. Militaries could play an important role in disaster response due to their ability to respond in a timely fashion and logistic capabilities. Pre-launch research on the affected area and knowledge on disaster-specific injury patterns would impact the expertise, equipment and supplies required. The increasing evidence base for disaster preparedness and medical response allows for better planning and reduces the impact of disasters on affected populations.

Vibration data have long been considered a useful tool for monitoring the condition of structures, though the reliable implementation of these techniques for bridges has remained elusive. This paper considers their suitability for monitoring the performance of CFRP-strengthened beams. First, the different failure mechanisms are reviewed and the likely sensitivity of each assessed. Then, data collected from the beams used in the ROBUST project are used to investigate the feasibility of both the system identification and statistical pattern recognition paradigms. The results suggest that although the system identification paradigm is insensitive to the small changes of stiffuess associated with these repairs, the statistical pattern recognition approach can be used successfully to classify the damaged beams.

To analyze the cleaning effectiveness of one type of instrument washer available for use in a dental office.Dental instruments were heavily contaminated with blood and specific test bacteria. They were placed in cleaning baskets or within instrument cassettes, processed through the instrument washer, and analyzed for remaining blood and viable bacteria.Information obtained indicated that the washer is an effective cleaning system for dental instruments.
