Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disease of the skin due to melanocyte destruction. A shared pathogenesis affecting melanocytes in the cochlea has been postulated. However, the association between vitiligo and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is unclear.To identify the association between vitiligo and SNHL.This retrospective, nationwide cohort study included patients with vitiligo and age-, sex- and comorbidities-matched controls (propensity score matching; 1:4 ratio) from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2013.In total, 13 048 patients with vitiligo and 52 192 controls were included. SNHL developed in 0.61% patients with vitiligo and 0.29% controls. After adjusting for sex, age and comorbidities, a significant association between vitiligo and SNHL was found (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.66-2.86). The other risk factors for developing SNHL included increased age, male sex, hyperlipidaemia, coronary artery disease and diffuse connective tissue diseases. In subgroup analysis, the association between vitiligo and SNHL remained significant in almost all the subgroups.A 2.2-fold increased risk of developing SNHL was found in patients with vitiligo. Proper referral to otologists for early screening and closer follow-up of SNHL should be considered for patients with vitiligo, especially for patients with older age.

A phosphonic acid ligand 4-(1H-imidazole-4-yl)phenylphosphonic acid (H3piz), featuring both phosphonic and imidazole donor groups, is used as a linker to construct metal-phosphonate framework [(CoHpiz)]n (1) in the mixed N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), isopropanol, and water solvent in the presence of a small amount of hydrofluoric acid. The structural analysis results show that complex 1 has a 2D layered network which is further extended into a 3D supramolecular network via H-bond interactions. The promotion activity of the compound on fractures is then evaluated. Objectives This study analyzed the role of the interleukin (IL)-6/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) pathway in dihydropyridine-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) fibroblasts. Materials and methods Tissue samples were obtained through surgical dissection from five DIGO patients and five healthy individuals. Cell cultures were conditioned with nifedipine (Nif) (0.34 M) and stimulated with IL-1 (10 ng/mL) to clarify whether IL-6 upregulates extracellular matrix overproduction or has a an impact on the cell proliferation rate of DIGO fibroblasts. STAT3 was knocked-down using short hairpin (sh)RNA to determine its role in collagen (Col) type-I alpha 1 (Colα1(I)) synthesis. Results Results showed that phosphorylated (p)STAT3 nuclear translocation was activated by a simulated autocrine concentration (50 ng/mL) of IL-6, and application of an anti-IL-6 antibody significantly decreased the pSTAT3/STAT3 ratio in DIGO fibroblasts. STAT3-knockdown significantly decreased STAT3 and Colα1(I) expressions in DIGO cells. DIGO tissues presented stronger proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression than did healthy individuals under the effect of IL-1β/Nif treatment. Conclusions Gingival inflammation (e.g., IL-1β) and taking dihydropyridine (e.g., Nif) may additively stimulate Col overproduction through the IL-6-STAT3-Colα1(I) cascade in DIGO cells. IL-6-STAT3 signaling may be considered a target for the control of DIGO.

Ferrovalley materials possess spontaneous valley splitting and anomalous valley Hall effect (AVHE) characteristics, making this an ideal platform for valleytronic information devices. The efficient regulation of valley splitting and the anomalous Hall current is critical for the realization of information coding. In this work, to realize the regulation of valley properties, Janus VSe2/VSeX (X = S, Te) heterojunctions are investigated using first-principles calculations. Spontaneous valley splitting and the AVHE can be achieved in VSe2/VSeX. In addition, the asymmetrical structure, different stacking configurations of heterojunctions, and the intrinsic polarity of the Janus VSeX monolayer can regulate the band alignments, i.e. type-Ⅰ, -Ⅱ, and -Ⅲ band alignments can be realized, and they are accompanied with the switch between semiconductor and metal phases. Moreover, the structure-controlled valley states and AVHE are obtained. When altering the Janus VSeS and VSeTe, the K and K′ valleys possess contrary characteristics: opposite spin signs and valley splitting occurred. Accordingly, we design a low-power-consumption switch to achieve multistate storage without external field regulation. The results can provide an alternative avenue for spintronics and valleytronics devices.

The Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (referred to as BCZT) ceramic powders were synthesized by the sol–gel method followed by calcining, and then the ceramics were obtained by sintering at different temperatures varied from 1200 to 1350 °C. The effects of sintering temperature on the microstructure, impedance spectroscopy, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties for BCZT ceramics have been thoroughly investigated. The pure perovskite structure and homogenous microstructure with high relative density (> 90%) for all BCZT ceramics are identified by XRD analysis and SEM measurement, and the stability is identified by the variable-temperature dielectric characterization. The impedance spectroscopy and well-defined polarization–electric field hysteresis loops for BCZT samples were detected at room temperature. In particular, the BCZT ceramic sintered at 1300 °C resulted the highest dielectric constant (er ~ 2170), the lowest dielectric loss (tan δ ~ 0.027), and the highest grain boundary resistance (Rgb ~ 8.9 × 107 Ω cm).

Annexin A1 (AnxA1, also known as lipocortin-1), is a calcium-dependent phospholipid binding protein with diverse functions. Previous studies have indicated that AnxA1 is associated with age-related β-cell dysfunction and aging, which lead to decreased β-cell proliferation capacity. However, it has been uncertain whether AnxA1 affects the proliferation of pancreatic beta (β) cells. In the present study, we reduced AnxA1 expression in the MIN6 islet β-cell line using small interfering RNA (AnxA1-siRNA), then measured cell cycle distribution and cellular proliferation. We also measured the expression levels of cell cycle-related proteins such as cyclin D1, cyclin E, and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2) by Western blot analysis. We investigated the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/ serine/threonine protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway to explore the potential mechanism underlying the observed effects. Knockdown of AnxA1 expression using siRNA reduced the rates of MIN6 cell proliferation. The proportions of cells in S and G2/M phases also decreased upon inhibition of AnxA1. Moreover, AnxA1 protein expression in MIN6 cells was positively related to the protein levels of cyclin D1, cyclin E, and CDK2. Activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway by AnxA1 may be involved in the signaling cascade to regulate cell proliferation. This study identified a positive correlation between AnxA1 protein and pancreatic β-cell proliferation. AnxA1 protein expression might affect the proliferation of MIN6 cells via regulation of cyclin D1, cyclin E, and CDK2 proteins, as well as the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.

For a hydropower station with multiple units per penstock, how to get the head loss of penstock has usually been a difficult problem, which the core issue is that it is hard to obtain the flow of each branch pipe. For power stations that have installed flow measurement devices for all units, or have undergone absolute turbine efficiency tests, the head measurement is relatively simple, but if the flow measuring device is not installed for each unit in advance, the head loss measurement will be difficult. This paper proposes an optimized measurement method performed in a hydropower station in Pakistan, which is to arrange an ultrasonic flowmeter on the main penstock, and then use the Winter-Kennedy method and flow rate measured by Ultrasonic flow meter to calibrate the Winter-Kennedy coefficients of unit one by one. Finally, by running three units at the same time and adjusting them with the same flow rate, the total loss of the penstock is calculated. At the same time, the flow rate measured by the Winter-Kennedy coefficient and that measured by the ultrasonic method has been checked and compared. The result proves that the accuracy of the result is high, and the result has a good consistency, which can fully meet the requirements of penstock head loss calculation and evaluation. The method has a certain practical value and can be referred to by other power station which has similar measurement.

The aim of this study was to observe the regulatory effects of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-223 on thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) rats, and to explore the potential regulatory mechanism.Online database TargetScan was used to predict the downstream regulatory targets of miR-223. A total of 45 Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into three groups, including sham operation group (Sham group), Model group, and miR-223 agonist group (miR-223 mimic group). TAO model was successfully established in rats through the injection of lauric acid via the femoral artery. The content of serum thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and endothelin (ET) was measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The pathological changes in the left hind limb were detected via hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Moreover, the expressions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-1β in the tissues of the rat left hind limb were determined via immunohistochemistry. In addition, the protein expression of Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) in tissues was determined using Western blotting.TargetScan database predicted that NLRP3 was the downstream target gene of miR-223. Compared with the Sham group, Model group exerted significantly higher content of serum TXB2 and ET, severe lesions in the rat left hind limb, as well as significantly increased expressions of IL-6 and IL-1β and protein expression of NLRP3 in tissues of the rat left hind limb (p0.05). Besides, compared with the Model group, miR-223 mimic group showed remarkably lower content of serum TXB2 and ET, improved lesions in the rat left hind limb, as well as decreased expressions of IL-6 and IL-1β and protein expression of NLRP3 in the tissues of the rat left hind limb (p0.05).MiR-223 agonist can alleviate thrombus and inflammatory response in TAO rats. The possible underlying mechanism may be related to targeted regulation on NLRP3 inflammasome expression.

To analyze the endemic situation of schistosomiasis in Hunan Province in 2019, so as to provide insights into the achievement of transmission interruption of schistosomiasis in the province in 2020.The data pertaining toSchistosomiasis was endemic in 281 townships (towns) from 41 counties (districts) of 6 cities in Hunan Province by the end of 2019. A total of 991 900 persons received blood testing in Hunan Province in 2019, and 22 773 were positive for the blood testing, with sero-prevalence of 2.30%. All stool examinations were negative in 22 933 individuals detected. The high sero-prevalence was seen in Nanxian County, Anxiang County and Ziyang District. Currently, there were 5 034 cases with advanced schistosomiasis detected in Hunan Province, and they were predominantly identified in Yuanjiang City, Heshan District and Yueyang County. There were 44 963 bovines fenced in schistosomiasis-endemic villages in Hunan Province in 2019, which were predominantly distributed in Yuanjiang City, Hanshou County and Ziyang District, and no positives were detected in 1 996 bovines receiving blood testing or 20 684 bovines receiving stool examinations.
