Abstract: The EPR-type strangeness correlation in the K0 system produced in the reaction at rest has been tested using the CPLEAR detector. The strangeness was tagged via strong interaction with absorbers away from the creation point. Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN measures the time dependent decay rate asymmetries of initially pure K0 and K 0 states to study CP,T and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system. The latest results on η+−, Δm and x are reported, as well as direct tests of T violation and CPT violation in K0- K 0 oscillations. Our results are consistent with CPT invariance and allow for an improved limit on the K0- K 0 mass difference. Further, a possible loss of quantum coherence of the neutral kaon system has been tested to a level near the Planck scale.

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment uses tagged K0 and K0 produced in pp annihilation at rest to measure CP-, T- and CPT-violation parameters in the neutral kaon system. The results of these measurements and some implications are reported.

Abstract: A measurement of the branching ratio for K s → e + e − decay was performed with the CPLEAR detector at LEAR. Full event reconstruction together with calorimeter e/π separation allowed for powerful background rejection and high signal acceptance. Analysis of data taken up to 1994 yields the result: Br(K s → e + e − ) −7 (90 % CL).

Abstract: The ratio R between the branching fractions of p p → K S K S and p p → K S K L for antiprotons annihilating at rest in gaseous hydrogen at 27 bar pressure was measured with the CPLEAR detector to be R(27 bar) = 0.037 ± 0.002. The fraction of P-wave annihilation at rest at this target density was deduced to be 0.45 ± 0.06. A value of R was also measured at 15 bar, with less statistics, yielding R(15 bar) = 0.041 ± 0.009.

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN uses time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries between K 0 and K 0 to measure η +− . The analysis and the systematic errors are discussed. The preliminary results from all our data are φ +− = 43.5 0 ± 0.5 0 stat ± 0.5 syst ± 0.4 Δm and | η +−| = (2.316 ± 0.025 stat ± 0.028 syst ± 0.009 τ S ) × 10 −3 . The dominant part in the systematic error of φ +− is due to the regeneration correction. A dedicated experiment was performed to reduce this error considerably.

Abstract: The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ produced by the annihilation of $\bar{\rm p}$'s in a hydrogen gas target. The ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ are identified by their companion products of the annihilation ${\rm K}^{\pm} \pi^{\mp}$ which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the sub-detectors are described.}

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN studies theCP, T andCPT symmetries in the neutral-kaon system by measuring the rate asymmetries between the decays of initially pure K0 and $$\overline {K^0 } $$ states. Using data taken between 1990 and mid 1994, precise measurements of |η+-|,φ +- and Δm are reported. The comparison of φ+- the superweak phase gives one of the most sensitive tests ofCPT invariance and leads to a new limit on the $$K^0 - \overline {K^0 } $$ mass difference.

Abstract: The interference between CP-conserving Ks and K L → π + π − π 0 decay amplitudes was observed by studying the decay rate asymmetries between initial K 0 and K 0 separately for the phase space regions E CM ( π + ) > E CM ( π − ) and E CM ( π + ) E CM ( π − ). For the parameter λ we found Re(λ) = 0.036 ± 0.010(stat.) −0.003 +0.002 (syst.) and Im(λ) consistent with zero, leading to a branching ratio B = [4.1 −1.9 +2.5 (stat.) −0.6 +0.5 (syst.)] × 10 −7 for the CP-conserving K S → π + π − π 0 decay.

Abstract: The best estimation of ϕ +− (the phase of the CP violation parameter η +− ) and of Δm (the K L - K S mass difference) is obtained by averaging the results of different experiments, taking into account the different correlation, existing for most of the experiments, between the measurement of ϕ +− and Δm . Including the recent measurements, we obtain the average values 〈Δm〉 = (530.7 ± 1.3) × 10 7 ħ/s and 〈 ϕ +− 〉 = 43.82° ± 0.63°. This value of ϕ +− is in good agreement with the superweak phase ϕ SW = 43.49° ± 0.08°.

Abstract: The CP violation parameter η+− is determined through the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged K0 and K 0 decaying to π+π−. The obtained values are |η+−| = (2.312 ± 0.043stat. ± 0.030syst. ± 0.011τs) × 10−3 and Φ+− = 42.7° ± 0.9stat.° ± 0.6syst.° ± 0.9Δm° with Δ = (527.4 ± 2.9) × 10 7 h gs −1 measured in the same experiment using the semileptonic decay channel.

Abstract: Antiproton annihilation at rest in gaseous hydrogen (16 bar pressure) to the final states ρ(770)X andf2(1270)X, whereX stands for one or more neutral mesons, has been studied at LEAR using the CPLEAR detector. Relative branching ratios are given forX =π0,2π0, 3π0 ω in the ρ case, and forX =π0, η in thef2 case. The annihilation channel$\bar pp \to \rho 3\pi ^0 $ has not been measured before. The fraction of P-wave annihilation is deduced from the ratiof2π0/ρπ0 to be 0.38±0.07, in good agreement with the result previously obtained by CPLEAR from the ratioK+K-/π+π-.

Abstract: Two-charged-pion correlations were studied in$\bar p$p(→2π*2π−nπ0,n≥0) annihilations at rest with the CPLEAR detector at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions with a small value of the relative fourmomentumQ, with respect to pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed enhancement was interpreted as a consequence of the Bose-Einstein symmetrization of the two-pion wave function. The data are well represented by a correlation function parametrized as a double-Gaussian; an exponential parametrization is also statistically acceptable. The value of the correlation strength is found to be >1. The high-quality large data samples together with the ability for K± identification and final-state separation allowed the study of systematic effects impacting on theQ dependence of the correlation function and on the extracted space parameters of the pion sources.

Abstract: The optical discriminator is based on the detection of Cherenkov light produced and trapped in a thin, spherical, crystal shell. It is only sensitive to charged particles with a non-zero impact parameter relative to the centre of the crystal sphere. The properties of this device, the results of tests in a particle beam and the expected performance in a fast selection of B events in fixed target experiments are reported.

Abstract: The s dependence of the electromagnetic proton form factors in the time-like region has been determined from the threshold (s = 4Mp2) up to s = 4.2 GeV2. Data were collected in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics. Total and differential cross section of the p p → e − e + reaction have been measured. The electric and magnetic form factors are found to have comparable value. The observed form factor shows a clear steep s dependence close to the threshold.

Abstract: An optical discriminator, sensitive to the impact parameter has been tested in a particle beam. The device is based on the detection of Cherenkov light produced and trapped in a thin spherical crystal shell viewed by a fast photodetector. The detector is only sensitive to charged particles with a nonzero impact parameter relative to the centre of the crystal sphere. A prototype using a LiF crystal has been tested and the experimental results are in agreement with expectations. We outline the foreseen developments in order to use such a detector for a fast selection of B events in fixed-target experiments at proton accelerators. We also discuss the use of the detector as presently conceived for the fast selection of strange particles.

Abstract: Bose-Einstein (BE) correlations between like-sign charged pions were studied in pp annihilations at rest into four-prong events, using data taken with the CPLEAR detector at LEAR (CERN). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions of similar momenta, with respect to the pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed BE- enhancement was used to extract the values for the strength λ of the effect and the radius r of the pion emitting source. The extracted value of λ >l is of relevant importance and clearly does not depend on the assumed parametrization of the correlation function. The influence of the normalization and fitting procedure, the detector resolution, the resonances production and decay and the neutral-pion multiplicity cuts, on the size of the pion source and the strength of the effect was investigated.

Abstract: We report the first determination of CP violation parameters from parameter from particle—antiparticle asymmetry in the decay of neutral kaons into two charged pions. Observation of such an asymmetry is direct proof of CP violation. A fit to the asymmetry enabled a determination of the parameter η+− to be made, yielding the result |η+−|=[2.32±0.14 (stat.)±0.03 (syst.)]×10−3 and σ+−=42.3°±4.4° (stat.)±0.4° (syst.), with an additional uncertainty of ±1.0° due to the error on the present published value of Δm, the KL0-KS0 mass difference. The magnitudes of both statistical and systematic errors will be significantly reduced in the future.

Abstract: The ratio of the branching fractions for p p →K+K− and p p →π+π− was determined with the CPLEAR detector, by stopping antiprotons in a gaseous hydrogen target at 15 bar pressure. It was found to be BR(K+K−)/BR(π+π−)=0.205± 0.016. The fraction of P-wave annihilation at rest at this target density was deduced to be (38±9)%.

Abstract: We report on a new measurement of the K L –K S mass difference Δm using the CPLEAR full data sample of neutral-kaon decays to e πν . The result is Δm =(0.5295±0.0020 stat ±0.0003 syst )×10 10 ℏ/s. It includes earlier data reported in R. Adler et al., CPLEAR Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 363 (1995) 237. A measurement of the ΔS = ΔQ violating parameter Re( x ) is also obtained.

Abstract: Several 15×15 cm 2 gaseous Micromegas chambers (MICROMEsh GAseous Structure) which consist of a conversion gap and an amplification gap separated by a thin grid have been extensively tested in low-intensity 10 GeV /c pion beam and high-intensity (up to 5×10 5 Hz / mm 2 ) 100 GeV /c muon beam. The detector behaviour has been studied with respect to many parameters: conversion gaps of 1 and 3 mm, amplification gaps of 50 and 10 μm, an external magnetic field and many different filling gases. So far no effect of the magnetic field up to 1.3 T has been observed. The gas mixture argon + cyclohexane appears to be very suitable with gains above 105 and a full-efficiency plateau of 50 V at 340 V. With a conversion gap as small as 1 mm and an electronics with a threshold at 5000 electrons the efficiency reaches 96%. With the addition of CF4 a time resolution of 5 ns (RMS) has been obtained. A spatial resolution better than 60 μ m has been observed with anode strips of 317 μ m pitch and was explained by transverse diffusion in the gas. Simulations show that with a pitch of 100 μ m and the appropriate gas a resolution of 10 μ m is within reach. This development leads to a new generation of cheap position-sensitive detectors which would permit high-precision tracking or vertexing close to the interaction region, in very high-rate environments.

Abstract: We present particle beam test results using a high-rate, high-position and high-time-resolution gaseous detector, ‘Micromegas’, of 15×15 cm 2 . The rate capability was measured with 10 MeV protons from a TANDEM accelerator. No effect on gain was observed at particle rates up to 10 9 mm −2 s −1 . With an argon and DME filling the gain was stable up to 50 mC total charge on a 3 mm 2 area. With minimum-ionizing particles in a CERN beam a high efficiency, close to 100%, was measured, under stable conditions. A first space-resolution measurement of 50 μ m ±20 μ m was obtained. The operation of the chamber shows that it is possible to optimize the geometrical parameters in order to improve the space resolution and bring the time resolution low enough to contain the events of each beam crossing (every 25 ns) in the European Large Hadron Collider. Further work in this direction is being actively pursued.

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment measured time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries of \PKz\ and \PaKz\ decaying to \pipmz\ in order to study the interference between the decay amplitudes of \PKzS\ --- either CP-violating or CP-conserving --- and the CP-conserving \PKzL\ decay amplitude. From the analysis of the complete data set we find for the CP-violating parameter \etapmz , % % $ \reeta = \left( -2 \pm 7 \mbox{\rm \ stat.\ } ^{+4}_{-1} \mbox{\rm \ syst.} \right) \times 10^{-3} , $ $ \imeta = \left( -2 \pm 9 \mbox{\rm \ stat.\ } ^{+2}_{-1} \mbox{\rm \ syst.} \right) \times 10^{-3} $ % % and for the CP-conserving parameter \lampmz , % % $ \relam = \left(+28 \pm 7 \mbox{\rm \ stat.\ } \pm 3 \mbox{\rm \ syst.} \right) \times 10^{-3} , $ $ \imlam = \left( -10 \pm 8 \mbox{\rm \ stat.\ } \pm 2 \mbox{\rm \ syst.} \right) \times 10^{-3}. $ % % From the latter, the branching ratio of the CP-conserving $\PKzS \rightarrow \pipmz $ decay is deduced to be % % $ \mathrm{B} = \left( 2.5 ^{+1.3}_{-1.0} \mathrm{\ stat.\ } ^{+0.5}_{-0.6} \mathrm{\ syst.\ } \right) \times 10^{-7}.

Abstract: Using strangeness tagging at production time, CPLEAR measures K0/K0 time-dependent asymmetries in pionic and semileptonic kaon decays. From those, a set of parameters describing CP, T and CPT violation in neutral kaon mixing and decay can be determined. Strangeness tagging at decay time with the lepton charge allows for time-reversal violation to be directly observed with a significance of more than three standard deviations. The precision on each of the CPT violation parameters is discussed. The mass equality of the K0 and K0 is tested within 4.×10−19 GeV.

Abstract: CP violation has been observed as a time-dependent rate asymmetry between the decays ${⩈erline K}^0 ⌝ghtarrow ≪^{0} ≪^{0}$ and K0 → π0π{0}, where the neutral kaons are produced with definite and individually known strangeness in ${⋏r p}p ⌝ghtarrow{⩈erline K}^0 K^+≪^- $ or pp → K0 K− π+. A special technique for the data analysis has been developed. The values obtained for ϕ00 and ¦ η00¦ are in agreement with those of previous measurements of CP violation.

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment at CERN measures particle‐antiparticle asymmetries of strangeness‐tagged K0, K0 decays to two‐pion, three‐pion, and semileptonic final states. The technique of CPLEAR is an alternative approach to previous CP‐violation studies. It provides complementary information with different systematics and gives access to novel measurements. The precision of the CP‐violation parameters η+− for π+π−, η+−0 for π+π−π0 and of the T‐violation parameter eT for π±e∓ν will be discussed for the data taken between 1990–1992.

Abstract: The method for studying semileptonic neutral kaon decays at CPLEAR is presented together with a preliminary data analysis. For the first time a direct determination of T violation is shown to be possible and low statistics results are given. From the same data the K(L)-K(S) mass difference, DELTAm, the CP violation parameter of K(S), epsilon(S), and the parameter x testing the DELTAS = DELTAQ rule are also obtained. Nuclear Physics A

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment is aiming at precise CP violation tests using initially pure K0- and K0BAR beams from the intense source provided by the annihilation of the LEAR pBAR-beam in hydrogen. The strangeness tagging efficiency and the systematic errors have been studied and found to be in agreement with the design specifications. The measurement of the differential time asymmetry of the pi+pi- decays allowed the direct observation of differences in the decay rates of particles and antiparticles.The CP violating parameters were determined as \eta+/-\ = (2.32 +/- 0.14) . 10(-3) and phi+/- = 42.3-degrees +/- 4.4-degrees. First results in the reconstruction and analysis of the neutral kaon decays into two neutral pions and the K(e)3 decay are presented. Nuclear Physics B

Abstract: We describe the status of experiment PS195, which is under way on LEAR at CERN to study CP violation starting with pure K0 or K0 states. Early results on backgrounds and systematic effects agree with expectations from the original proposal. An asymmetry in particle‐anti‐particle partial decay rates has been seen for the first time.

Abstract: The values of the proton form factor in the time‐like region have been determined for values of Q2 ranging from threshold to 4.2 (GeV/c)2. The data were collected in an experiment performed at the LEAR at CERN. The final results are presented here. We observed a s dependence of the form factor near threshold which is not in agreement with the previous experiments. We found also the CM angular distributions of the e+e− pair at various energies compatible with the ‖Ge‖=‖Gm‖ hypothesis.

Abstract: An optical detector sensitive to impact parameter has been tested in a particle beam. The device is based on the detection of Cerenkov light produced and trapped in a thin spherical crystal shell viewed by a fast photodetector. The detector is only sensitive to charged particles with a non‐zero impact parameter relative to the center of the crystal sphere. A prototype using a LiF 3 mm thick crystal has been tested and the experimental results are in agreement with the expectations. We discuss applications of this detector for fast selection of B‐events in fixed target experiments at proton accelerators. A program of technical development has started, aiming at a high efficiency in B‐meson pairs and a rejection factor of 100 against unwanted minimum bias events. We also present a modified collider configuration, the Asymmetric Tilted Collider, to optimize the sensitivity and the efficiency of a B‐meson experiment.

Abstract: The s dependence of the proton form factor in the time-like region has been determined up to s=4.2 GeV2, assuming the validity of the |Ge| = |Gm| = |G| hypothesis. Data were taken in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics on the proton form factor near threshold in the time-like region. Our result consist of cross section measurements of the p p → e + e − reaction for different beam momenta in the kinematical r 3.6⩽s⩽4.2 GeV2. The observed s dependence of the form factor close to threshold differs appreciably from the one suggested by previous experiments.

Abstract: The rate of the reaction pp→e+e− has been measured in liquid hydrogen for antiprotons at momentum values between 150 and 300 MeV/c. New precise values of the proton electromagnetic form factor in the time-like region have been obtained assuming |Ge|=|Gm| in the investigated region. The q2 dependence of the form factor close to threshold is found to have a steeper slope than indicated by existing calculations based on vector dominance models.

Abstract: The aim of the CP LEAR experiment is to study symmetry-violation effects, making use of tagged K0's and K0's. The detector, although missing some electronic components, has been operational for a few weeks at the end of 1989 at the CERN Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). At the moment, the analysis of the data is in progress. This paper gives a description of the experimental method and of the detector; the sensitivities of some measurements and some preliminary results are also discussed.

Abstract: Charged-current neutrino interactions have been analysed in a sample of pictures from BEBC equipped with a TST. Using a method independent of both the neutrino flux and nuclear interaction corrections, the ratio R= σn/σp has been measured. The result is R=1.98±0.19 for the ratio of total cross sections. Abstract: We have studied the properties of inclusive neutral-strange-particle production in charged-current ..nu..p interactions. The rate for producing at least one neutral strange particle in a charged-current interaction is 0.14 +- 0.02. The inclusive distributions for events with neutral strange particles and for all charged-current events exhibit the same qaulitative behavior. We find no acceptable candidates for the ..delta..S = - ..delta..Q ..lambda.. production reaction ..nu..p ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/2..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ in approximately 3000 charged-current events with E/sub ..nu../ > 10 GeV. We find upper limits (relative to the total charged-current sample) for charmed-particle production in any one mass region with subsequent decay into ..lambda..m..pi.. and Km..pi.. final states of 1% and 2%, respectively.

Abstract: A search for ..mu..e events produced in an antineutrino hydrogen-neon experiment using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber is reported. Based on a single candidate, the 90%-confidence upper limit for the relative yield of ..mu../sup +/e/sup -/ events is 0.5% of all charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 10 GeV.

Abstract: Charged-current neutrino and antineutrino interaction cross sections have been measured in the energy range 10 to 50 GeV using BEBC filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture. At these energies, σ/E was measured to be (0.73±0.08) 10−38 cm2/GeV per nucleon for neutrinos and (0.32±0.06) 10−38 cm2/GeV per nucleon for antineutrinos.

Abstract: We present results for the reactions vp ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/..pi../sup +/p and vp ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/K/sup +/p at energies above 5 GeV. The average cross section for the first reaction between 15 ad 40 GeV is (0.80 +- 0.12) x 10/sup -38/ cm/sup 2/ and for events with M/sub ..pi../+p-italic < 1.4 GeV is (0.55 +- 0.08) x 10/sup -33/ cm/sup 2/. The ratio of the cross section for the second reaction to that for the first is 0.017 +- 0.010.

Abstract: Using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen-filled neon-surrounded track-sensitive target, the charged current cross sections and structure functions of hydrogen and neon targets traversed by the same neutrinos and antineutrinos are compared directly. The measured total cross-section ratios between hydrogen and neon allow precise total cross-section values for hydrogen to be inferred. Using this normalization, the ν and ν hydrogen data are combined and the quark distributions in free nucleons, parametrised as functions of ξ, are extracted. This free-nucleon parametrisation is then compared directly with the neon data in order to measure nuclear effects such as those recently reported by the EMC collaboration. Abstract: We analyze a sample of about 2000 charged-current neutrino-proton interactions with neutrino energy greater than 10 GeV produced in the 15-ft hydrogen bubble chamber at Fermilab using a broad-band neutrino beam. We study the details of the hadrons produced and find generally good agreement with the quark-parton model and present parametrizations of quark fragmentation ($D$) functions. The $D$ functions are found to be independent of ${Q}^{2}$ and $W$ (total hadronic mass) for $Wg4$ GeV, in agreement with the model. The height of the rapidity plateau in the quark (current) fragmentation region is compared to that of the diquark (target) fragmentation region and the two are found to agree. Detailed charge-correlation data are presented and compared to the Field-Feynman model of the $D$ functions, and also to a longitudinal-phase-space model, and are found to disagree with both. The mean transverse momentum ${P}_{T}$ of the hadrons is studied for its ${Q}^{2}$ and Feynman-$X$ dependence. We find a sizeable increase of $〈{{P}_{T}}^{2}〉$ with Feynman $X$ which agrees, however, with our longitudinal-phase-space model. We find no statistically significant dependence of $〈{{P}_{T}}^{2}〉$ on ${Q}^{2}$, up to ${Q}^{2}=64$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$, although the highest-momentum hadrons are consistent with a mild ${Q}^{2}$ dependence. The azimuthal angular distribution of the highest-momentum hadrons in high-${Q}^{2}$ events is examined for evidence of anisotropy of the type that has been predicted for effects of gluon radiation.

Abstract: The ratio of neutral-current to charged-current cross sections is determined from a sample of events obtained in an exposure of the Fermilab 15-ft hydrogen bubble chamber to a high-energy, horn-focused neutrino beam. For evens with three or more prongs and with visible hadron momentum above 10 GeV/c, the ratio is 0.40 +- 0.14. A Monte Carlo calculation assuming the Weinberg-Salam model is used to correct for excluded events, yielding R/sub NC/CC/ = 0.48 +- 0.17.

Abstract: Antineutrino interactions in BEBC are compared to look for differences between the differential cross sections per nucleon in neon and in deuterium. The identical geometries, beam spectra and muon identification criteria and acceptances allow comparison with very small systematic errors. The results are compared in detail with μ and e scattering data from EMC and SLAC. Abstract: An event with the decay chain Σ c + → Λ c + + π 0 , Λ c + → K − + p + π + , has been observed in an exposure of BEBC, equipped with a track sensitive target, to the wide band neutrino beam from the SPS at CERN. The event has a unique three constraint kinematic fit to the ΔS = − ΔQ reaction v + p → μ − + p + K − + π + + π + + π 0 with both gammas from the π 0 decay detected. The proton and other final state particles are identified. The masses are M ( Λ c + ) = 2290 ± 3 MeV/ c 2 , M ( Σ c + ) = 2457 ± 4 MeV/ c 2 and M ( Σ c + ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 168 ± 3 MeV/ c 2 . Including other data one obtains M ( Σ c ++ ) − M ( Σ c + ) = 0 ± 4 MeV/ c 2 .

Abstract: We present production and decay distributions for the reaction vp ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/p..pi../sup +/ with M/sub ..pi../+/sub p/ .. ..mu../sup -/..delta../sup + +/, but we find evidence for the presence of non-..delta.. amplitudes for Q/sup 2/ > 1 GeV/sup 2/. The data are fitted by various theoretical models. For Q/sup 2/ < 1 GeV/sup 2/ the best fit yields the value M/sub A/ = 1.25/sup +0.15//sub -0.13/ GeV, using a dipole-nucleon axial-vector form factor in Alder's model, although none of these models successfully reproduces the observed ..delta..-decay distributions.
