Abstract: Abstract The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational-wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. This publication presents a summary of the state of the art in LISA cosmology, theory and methods, and identifies new opportunities to use gravitational-wave observations by LISA to probe the universe.

Abstract: Fundamental cosmology observations, such as the detection of the redshift drift and tests of the universality of physical laws, are key science and design drivers of the ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (ANDES), an Extremely Large Telescope instrument. While separate forecasts for each of them have been reported, we have developed Fisher Matrix based forecast tools combining both of these observables. We demonstrate the synergies between the two ANDES datasets, quantifying the improvements in cosmology and fundamental physics parameter constraints for two separate theoretical paradigms. Abstract: Ultra-hot Jupiters, with their high equilibrium temperatures and resolved spectral lines, have emerged as a perfect testbed for new analysis techniques in the study of exoplanet atmospheres. In particular, the resolved sodium doublet as a resonant line has proven a powerful indicator to probe the atmospheric structure over a wide pressure range. We explore an atmospheric origin of the observed blueshifted feature next to the sodium doublet of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121~b, using a partial transit obtained with the 4-UT mode of ESPRESSO. We study its atmospheric dynamics visible across the terminator by splitting the data into mid-transit and egress. We determine that the blueshifted high-velocity absorption component is generated only during the egress part of the transit when a larger fraction of the day side of the planet is visible. For the egress data, MERC retrieves the blueshifted high-velocity absorption component as an equatorial day-to-night side wind across the evening limb, with no zonal winds visible on the morning terminator with weak evidence compared to a model with only vertical winds. For the mid-transit data, the observed line broadening is attributed to a vertical, radial wind. We attribute the equatorial day-to-night side wind over the evening terminator to a localised jet and restrain its existence between the substellar point and up to $10^\circ$ to the terminator in longitude, an opening angle of the jet of at most $60^\circ$ in latitude, and a lower boundary in altitude between [1.08, 1.15] $R_p$. Due to the partial nature of the transit, we cannot make any statements on whether the jet is truly super-rotational and one-sided or part of a symmetric day-to-night side atmospheric wind from the hotspot., 15 pages, 10 figures, 2 appendixes, accepted for publication in A&A on March 10th, 2023

4. Runaway dilaton models: improved constraints from the full cosmological evolution

Abstract: One of the few firm predictions of string theory is the existence of a massless scalar field coupled to gravity, the dilaton. In its presence, the value of the fundamental constants of the universe, such as the fine-structure constant, will vary with the time-dependent vacuum expectation value of this field, in direct violation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle. The \emph{runaway dilaton} proposed by Damour, Piazza, and Veneziano provides a physically motivated cosmological scenario which reconciles the existence of a massless dilaton with observations, while still providing non-standard and testable predictions. Furthermore, the field can provide a natural candidate for dynamical dark energy. While this model has been previously constrained from local laboratory experiments and low-redshift observations, we provide here the first full self-consistent constraints, also including high redshift data, in particular from the cosmic microwave background. We consider various possible scenarios in which the field could act as quintessence. Despite the wider parameter space, we make use of recent observational progress to significantly improve constraints on the model's coupling parameters, showing that order unity couplings (which would be natural in string theory) are ruled out., Published in Phys. Abstract: The redshift drift (also known as the Sandage Test) is a model-independent probe of fundamental cosmology, enabling us to watch the universe expand in real time, and thereby to confirm (or not) the recent acceleration of the universe without any model-dependent assumptions. On the other hand, by choosing a fiducial model one can also use it to constrain the model parameters, thereby providing a consistency test for results obtained with other probes. The drift can be measured by the Extremely Large Telescope and also by the full SKA. Recently two alternative measurement methods have been proposed: the cosmic accelerometer, and the differential redshift drift. Here we summarize a comparative analysis of the various methods and their possible outcomes, using both Fisher Matrix and MCMC techniques. We find that no single method is uniformly better than the others. Instead, their comparative performance depends both on experimental parameters (including the experiment time and redshift at which the measurement is made) and also on the scientific goal (e.g., detecting the drift signal with high statistical significance, constraining the matter density, or constraining the dark energy properties). 7. Quantitative constraints on modified gravity paradigms

Abstract: We use low-redshift background cosmology data to place quantitative constraints on three separate modified gravity models, each of which aims to explain the low-redshift acceleration through a different physical mechanism. The Lifshitz cosmology is effectively a parametric extension of the canonical $\Lambda$CDM model, where a time-dependent cosmological constant originates from vacuum energy. The Infinite Statistics model is also a parametric extension of $\Lambda$CDM, where the dark energy is dynamic and originates from the curvature of a dual space-time. We show that the data restricts the additional parameters in these models to be consistent with their $\Lambda$CDM values, and in particular that it implies that the theoretically predicted value for a dimensionless coupling parameter in the Lifshitz model is ruled out at more than six standard deviations. In the Regge-Teitelboim model, gravity is described by embedding the usual space-time manifold in a fixed higher-dimensional background, and there is no parametric $\Lambda$CDM limit. We study several separate realizations of the model, respectively introduced by Davidson, by Fabi \textit{et al.}, and by Stern \& Xu, and show that the first two are ruled out by the low-redshift data we use, while the latter is consistent with this data but requires a non-standard value of the matter density. Abstract: This is an Open Access article, published by EDP Sciences, under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We report the discovery and characterisation of two Earth-mass planets orbiting in the habitable zone of the nearby M-dwarf GJ 1002 based on the analysis of the radial-velocity (RV) time series from the ESPRESSO and CARMENES spectrographs. The host star is the quiet M5.5 V star GJ 1002 (relatively faint in the optical, V ~ 13.8 mag, but brighter in the infrared, J ~ 8.3 mag), located at 4.84 pc from the Sun. We analyse 139 spectroscopic observations taken between 2017 and 2021. We performed a joint analysis of the time series of the RV and full-width half maximum (FWHM) of the cross-correlation function (CCF) to model the planetary and stellar signals present in the data, applying Gaussian process regression to deal with the stellar activity. We detect the signal of two planets orbiting GJ 1002. GJ 1002 b is a planet with a minimum mass mp sin i of 1.08 ± 0.13 M⊕ with an orbital period of 10.3465 ± 0.0027 days at a distance of 0.0457 ± 0.0013 au from its parent star, receiving an estimated stellar flux of 0.67 F⊕. GJ 1002 c is a planet with a minimum mass mp sin i of 1.36 ± 0.17 M⊕ with an orbital period of 20.202 ± 0.013 days at a distance of 0.0738 ± 0.0021 au from its parent star, receiving an estimated stellar flux of 0.257 F⊕. We also detect the rotation signature of the star, with a period of 126 ± 15 days. We find that there is a correlation between the temperature of certain optical elements in the spectrographs and changes in the instrumental profile that can affect the scientific data, showing a seasonal behaviour that creates spurious signals at periods longer than ~200 days. GJ 1002 is one of the few known nearby systems with planets that could potentially host habitable environments. The closeness of the host star to the Sun makes the angular sizes of the orbits of both planets (~9.7 mas and ~15.7 mas, respectively) large enough for their atmosphere to be studied via high-contrast high-resolution spectroscopy with instruments such as the future spectrograph ANDES for the ELT or the LIFE mission. © The Authors 2023., A.S.M. acknowledges financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) under 2018 Juan de la Cierva program IJC2018-035229-I. 9. Redshift drift cosmography with ELT and SKAO measurements

Abstract: Mapping the expansion history of the universe is a compelling task of physical cosmology, especially in the context of the observational evidence for the recent acceleration of the universe, which demonstrates that canonical theories of cosmology and particle physics are incomplete and that there is new physics still to be discovered. Cosmography is a phenomenological approach to cosmology, where (with some caveats) physical quantities are expanded as a Taylor series in the cosmological redshift $z$, or analogous parameters such as the rescaled redshift $y=z/(1+z)$ or the logarithmic redshift $x=\ln{(1+z)}$. Moreover, the redshift drift of objects following cosmological expansion provides a model-independent observable, detectable by facilities currently under construction, {\it viz.} the Extremely Large Telescope and the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (at least in its full configuration). Here we use simulated redshift drift measurements from the two facilities to carry out an assessment of the cosmological impact and model discriminating power of redshift drift cosmography. We find that the combination of measurements from the two facilities can provide a stringent test of the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm, and that overall the logarithmic based expansions of the spectroscopic velocity drift are the most reliable ones, performing better than analogous expansions in the redshift or the rescaled redshift: the former nominally gives the smaller error bars for the cosmographic coefficients but is vulnerable to biases in the higher order terms (in other words, it is only reliable at low redshifts), while the latter always performs poorly., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables; in press at MNRAS

10. Scaling solutions of wiggly cosmic strings: II. Time-varying coarse-graining scale solutions

Abstract: We continue our exploration of the wiggly generalisation of the Velocity-Dependent One Scale Model for cosmic strings, through the study of its allowed asymptotic scaling solutions. We extend the work of a previous paper [Almeida $\&$ Martins, Phys. Rev. D 104 (2021) 043524] by considering the more comprehensive case of a time-varying coarse-graining scale for the string wiggles. The modeling of the evolution of the network therefore relies on three main mechanisms: Hubble expansion, energy transfer mechanisms (e.g., the production of loops and wiggles) and the choice of the scale at which wiggles are coarse-grained. We analyse the role of each of them on the overall behaviour of the network, and thus in the allowed scaling solutions. In Minkowski space, we find that linear scaling, previously observed in numerical simulations without expansion, is not possible with a changing averaging scale. For expanding universes, we find that the three broad classes of scaling solutions -- with the wiggliness disappearing, reaching scaling, or growing -- still exist but are differently impacted by the time evolution of the coarse-graining scale. Nambu-Goto type solutions (without wiggles) are unaffected, growing wiggliness solutions are trivially generalized, while for solutions where wiggliness reaches scaling the expansion rate for which the solution exists is decreased with respect to the one for a fixed coarse-graining scale. Finally, we also show that the inclusion of a time-varying coarse-graining scale allows, in principle, for additional scaling solutions which, although mathematically valid, are not physical. Overall, our mapping of the landscape of the allowed scaling solutions of the wiggly Velocity-Dependent One Scale Model paves the way for the detailed testing of the model, to be done by forthcoming high-resolution field theory and Nambu-Goto simulations., 15 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; Phys. Abstract: We present radial velocity follow-up obtained with ESPRESSO of the M-type star LTT 1445A (TOI-455), for which a transiting planet b with an orbital period of~5.4 days was detected by TESS. We report the discovery of a second transiting planet (LTT 1445A c) and a third non-transiting candidate planet (LTT 1445A d) with orbital periods of 3.12 and 24.30 days, respectively. The host star is the main component of a triple M-dwarf system at a distance of 6.9 pc. We used 84 ESPRESSO high-resolution spectra to determine accurate masses of 2.3$\pm$0.3 $\mathrm{M}_\oplus$ and 1.0$\pm$0.2 $\mathrm{M}_\oplus$ for planets b and c and a minimum mass of 2.7$\pm$0.7 $\mathrm{M}_\oplus$ for planet d. Based on its radius of 1.43$\pm0.09$ $\mathrm{R}_\oplus$ as derived from the TESS observations, LTT 1445A b has a lower density than the Earth and may therefore hold a sizeable atmosphere, which makes it a prime target for the James Webb Space Telescope. We used a Bayesian inference approach with the nested sampling algorithm and a set of models to test the robustness of the retrieved physical values of the system. There is a probability of 85$\%$ that the transit of planet c is grazing, which results in a retrieved radius with large uncertainties at 1.60$^{+0.67}_{-0.34}$ $\mathrm{R}_\oplus$. LTT 1445A d orbits the inner boundary of the habitable zone of its host star and could be a prime target for the James Webb Space Telescope., 31 pages, 20 figures Accepted A&A

Abstract: Ground-based high-resolution spectrographs are key instruments for several astrophysical domains. Unfortunately, the observed spectra are contaminated by the Earth's atmosphere. While different techniques exist to correct for telluric lines in exoplanet atmospheric studies, in radial velocity (RV) studies, telluric lines with an absorption depth of >2% are generally masked, which poses a problem for faint targets and M dwarfs as most of their RV content is present where telluric contamination is important. We propose a simple telluric model to be embedded in the ESPRESSO DRS. The goal is to provide telluric-free spectra and enable RV measurements, including spectral ranges where telluric lines fall. The model is a line-by-line radiative transfer code that assumes a single atmospheric layer. We use the sky conditions and the physical properties of the lines from HITRAN to create the telluric spectrum. A subset of selected telluric lines is used to robustly fit the spectrum through a Levenberg-Marquardt minimization algorithm. When applied to stellar spectra from A0- to M5-type stars, the residuals of the strongest H2O lines are below 2% for all spectral types, with the exception of M dwarfs, which are within the pseudo-continuum. We then determined the RVs from the telluric-corrected ESPRESSO spectra of Tau Ceti and Proxima. We created telluric-free masks and compared the obtained RVs with the DRS RVs. In the case of Tau Ceti, we identified that micro-telluric lines introduce systematics up to an amplitude of 58 cm/s and with a period of one year. For Proxima, the gain in spectral content at redder wavelengths is equivalent to a gain of 25% in photon noise. This leads to better constraints on the semi-amplitude and eccentricity of Proxima d. Abstract: Searching for variations of nature’s fundamental constants is a crucial step in our quest to go beyond our current standard model of fundamental physics. If they exist, such variations will be very likely driven by the existence of a new fundamental field. The Bekenstein model and its extensions introduce such a scalar field in a purely phenomenological way, inducing a variation of the fine-structure constant on cosmological scales. This theoretical framework is as simple and general as possible while still preserving all the symmetries of standard quantum electrodynamics. When allowing for couplings to the other sectors of the Universe, such as baryons, dark matter, and the cosmological constant, the Bekenstein model is expected to reproduce the low energy limits of several grand unification, quantum gravity, and higher dimensional theories. In this work, we constrain different versions of the Bekenstein model by confronting the full cosmological evolution of the field with an extensive set of astrophysical, cosmological, and local measurements. We show that couplings of the order of parts per million are excluded for all the cases considered, imposing strong restrictions on theoretical frameworks aiming to deal with variations of the fine-structure constant., Computations were made on the Mardec cluster supported by the OCEVU Labex (ANR-11LABX-0060) and the Excellence Initiative of Aix Marseille University—A*MIDEX, part of the French “Investissements d’Avenir” program. Abstract: K. G. Arun et al., The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas., E. Abstract: Dynamical scalar fields in an effective four-dimensional field theory are naturally expected to couple to the rest of the theory's degrees of freedom, unless some new symmetry is postulated to suppress these couplings. In particular, a coupling to the electromagnetic sector will lead to spacetime variations of the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$. Astrophysical tests of the space-time stability of $\alpha$ are therefore a powerful probe of new physics. Here we use ESPRESSO and other contemporary measurements of $\alpha$, together with background cosmology data, local laboratory atomic clock and Weak Equivalence Principle measurements, to place stringent constraints on the simplest examples of the two broad classes of varying $\alpha$ models: Bekenstein models and quintessence-type dark energy models, both of which are parametric extensions of the canonical $\Lambda$CDM model. In both cases, previously reported constraints are improved by more than a factor of ten. This improvement is largely due to the very strong local constraints, but astrophysical measurements can help to break degeneracies between cosmology and fundamental physics parameters., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; in press at Phys. Abstract: Euclid Consortium: S. Nesseris et al., [Context] The standard cosmological model is based on the fundamental assumptions of a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe on large scales. An observational detection of a violation of these assumptions at any redshift would immediately indicate the presence of new physics., [Aims] We quantify the ability of the Euclid mission, together with contemporary surveys, to improve the current sensitivity of null tests of the canonical cosmological constant Λ and the cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model in the redshift range 0, [Methods] We considered both currently available data and simulated Euclid and external data products based on a ΛCDM fiducial model, an evolving dark energy model assuming the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parameterization or an inhomogeneous Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant Λ, and carried out two separate but complementary analyses: a machine learning reconstruction of the null tests based on genetic algorithms, and a theory-agnostic parametric approach based on Taylor expansion and binning of the data, in order to avoid assumptions about any particular model., [Results] We find that in combination with external probes, Euclid can improve current constraints on null tests of the ΛCDM by approximately a factor of three when using the machine learning approach and by a further factor of two in the case of the parametric approach. However, we also find that in certain cases, the parametric approach may be biased against or missing some features of models far from ΛCDM., [Conclusions] Our analysis highlights the importance of synergies between Euclid and other surveys. 18. Observational constraints on nonlinear matter extensions of general relativity

Abstract: We present a phenomenological analysis of current observational constraints on classes of FLRW cosmological models in which the matter side of Einstein's equations includes, in addition to the canonical term, a term proportional to some function of the energy-momentum tensor ($T^2=T_{\alpha\beta}T^{\alpha\beta}=\rho^2+3p^2$), or of its trace ($T=\rho-3p$). Qualitatively, one may think of these models as extensions of general relativity with a nonlinear matter Lagrangian. As such they are somewhat different from the usual dynamical dark energy or modified gravity models: in the former class of models one adds further dynamical degrees of freedom to the Lagrangian (often in the form of scalar fields), while in the latter the gravitational part of the Lagrangian is changed. We study both of these models under two different scenarios: (1) as phenomenological two-parameter or three-parameter extensions of the standard $\Lambda$CDM, in which case the model still has a cosmological constant but the nonlinear matter Lagrangian leads to additional terms in Einstein's equations, which cosmological observations tightly constrain, and (2) as alternatives to $\Lambda$CDM, where there is no cosmological constant, and the nonlinear matter term would have to provide the acceleration (which would be somewhat closer in spirit to the usual modified gravity models). Abstract: Aims. In this paper we introduce CaRM, a semi-automatic code for the retrieval of broadband transmission spectra of transiting planets through the chromatic Rossiter-McLaughlin method. We applied it to HARPS and ESPRESSO observations of two exoplanets to retrieve the transmission spectrum and we analyze its fitting transmission models. Methods. We used the strong radius dependence of the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect amplitude, caused by planetary companions, to measure the apparent radius change caused by the exoplanet atmosphere. In order to retrieve the transmission spectrum, the radial velocities, which were computed over wavelength bins that encompass several spectral orders, were used to simultaneously fit the Keplerian motion and the RM effect. From this, the radius ratio was computed as a function of the wavelength, which allows one to retrieve the low-resolution broadband transmission spectrum of a given exoplanet. CaRM offers the possibility to use two Rossiter-McLaughlin models taken from ARoME and PyAstronomy, associated with a Keplerian function to fit radial velocities during transit observations automatically. Furthermore it offers the possibility to use some methods that could, in theory, mitigate the effect of perturbation in the radial velocities during transits. Results. We applied CaRM to recover the transmission spectrum of HD 189733b and WASP-127b, with HARPS and ESPRESSO data, respectively. Our results for HD 189733b suggest that the blue part of the spectrum is dominated by Rayleigh scattering, which is compatible with former studies. The analysis of WASP-127b shows a flat transmission spectrum. Conclusions. The CaRM code allows one to retrieve the transmission spectrum of a given exoplanet using minimal user interaction. We demonstrate that it allows one to compute the low-resolution broadband transmission spectra of exoplanets observed using high-resolution spectrographs such as HARPS and ESPRESSO.

Abstract: Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the Sun. This small, low-mass, mid M dwarf is known to host an Earth-mass exoplanet with an orbital period of 11.2 days within the habitable zone, as well as a long-period planet candidate with an orbital period of close to 5 years. We report on the analysis of a large set of observations taken with the ESPRESSO spectrograph at the VLT aimed at a thorough evaluation of the presence of a third low-mass planetary companion, which started emerging during a previous campaign. Radial velocities (RVs) were calculated using both a cross-correlation function (CCF) and a template matching approach. The RV analysis includes a component to model Proxima's activity using a Gaussian process (GP). We use the CCF's full width at half maximum to help constrain the GP, and we study other simultaneous observables as activity indicators in order to assess the nature of any potential RV signals. We detect a signal at 5.12 $\pm$ 0.04 days with a semi-amplitude of 39 $\pm$ 7 cm/s. The analysis of subsets of the ESPRESSO data, the activity indicators, and chromatic RVs suggest that this signal is not caused by stellar variability but instead by a planetary companion with a minimum mass of 0.26 $\pm$ 0.05 $M_\oplus$ (about twice the mass of Mars) orbiting at 0.029 au from the star. Abstract: SMSS J160540.18$-$144323.1 is the carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) star with the lowest iron abundance ever measured, [Fe/H]=-6.2, which was first reported with the SkyMapper telescope. The carbon abundance is A(C)~6.1 in the low-C band, as the majority of the stars in this metallicity range. Yet, constraining the isotopic ratio of key species, such as carbon, sheds light on the properties and origin of these elusive stars. We performed high-resolution observations of SMSS1605$-$1443 with the ESPRESSO spectrograph to look for variations in the radial velocity ($v_{rad}$) with time. These data have been combined with older MIKE and UVES archival observations to enlarge the temporal baseline. The $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratio is also studied to explore the possibility of mass transfer from a binary companion. A cross-correlation function against a natural template was applied to detect $v_{rad}$ variability and a spectral synthesis technique was used to derive $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C in the stellar atmosphere. We confirm previous indications of binarity in SMSS1605$-$1443 and measured a lower limit $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C$>60$ at more than a 3$\sigma$ confidence level, proving that this system is chemically unmixed and that no mass transfer from the unseen companion has happened so far. Thus, we confirm the CEMP-no nature of SMSS1605$-$1443 and show that the pristine chemical composition of the cloud from which it formed is currently imprinted in its stellar atmosphere free of contamination., Comment: Published in A&A, 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Context. High-resolution spectroscopy studies of ultra-hot Jupiters have been key in our understanding of exoplanet atmospheres. Observing into the atmospheres of these giant planets allows for direct constraints on their atmospheric compositions and dynamics while laying the groundwork for new research regarding their formation and evolution environments. Aims. Two of the most well-studied ultra-hot Jupiters are WASP-76b and WASP-121b, with multiple detected chemical species and strong signatures of their atmospheric dynamics. We take a new look at these two exceptional ultra-hot Jupiters by reanalyzing the transit observations taken with ESPRESSO at the Very Large Telescope and attempt to detect additional species. Methods. To extract the planetary spectra of the two targets, we corrected for the telluric absorption and removed the stellar spectrum contributions. We then exploited new synthetic templates that were specifically designed for ultra-hot Jupiters in combination with the cross-correlation technique to unveil species that remained undetected by previous analyses. Results. We add a novel detection of Ba+ to the known atmospheric compositions of WASP-76b and WASP-121b, the heaviest species detected to date in any exoplanetary atmosphere, with additional new detections of Co and Sr+ and a tentative detection of Ti+ for WASP-121b. We also confirm the presence of Ca+, Cr, Fe, H, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, and V on both WASP-76b and WASP-121b, with the addition of Ca, Fe+, and Ni for the latter. Finally, we also confirm the clear asymmetric absorption feature of Ca+ on WASP-121b, with an excess absorption at the bluer wavelengths and an effective planet radius beyond the Roche lobe. This indicates that the signal may arise from the escape of planetary atmosphere.

Abstract: The redshift drift is a model-independent probe of fundamental cosmology, but choosing a fiducial model one can also use it to constrain the model parameters. We compare the constraining power of redshift drift measurements by the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), as studied by Liske {\it et al.} (2008), with that of two recently proposed alternatives: the cosmic accelerometer of Eikenberry {\it et al.} (2020), and the differential redshift drift of Cooke (2020). We find that the cosmic accelerometer with a 6-year baseline leads to weaker constraints than those of the ELT (by $60\%$), but with identical time baselines it outperforms the ELT by up to a factor of 6. The differential redshift drift always performs worse that the standard approach if the goal is to constrain the matter density, but it can perform significantly better than it if the goal is to constrain the dark energy equation of state. Our results show that accurately measuring the redshift drift and using these measurements to constrain cosmological parameters are different merit functions: an experiment optimized for one of them will not be optimal for the other. Abstract: We apply a recently developed formalism to study the evolution of a current-carrying string network under the simple but generic assumption of a linear equation of state. We demonstrate that the existence of a scaling solution with non-trivial current depends on the expansion rate of the universe, the initial root mean square current on the string, and the available energy loss mechanisms. We find that the fast expansion rate after radiation-matter equality will tend to rapidly dilute any pre-existing current and the network will evolve towards the standard Nambu-Goto scaling solution (provided there are no external current-generating mechanisms). During the radiation era, current growth is possible provided the initial conditions for the network generate a relatively large current and/or there is significant early string damping. The network can then achieve scaling with a stable non-trivial current, assuming large currents will be regulated by some leakage mechanism. The potential existence of current-carrying string networks in the radiation era, unlike the standard Nambu-Goto networks expected in the matter era, could have interesting phenomenological consequences., 21 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Observations of metal absorption systems in the spectra of distant quasars allow to constrain a possible variation of the fine-structure constant throughout the history of the Universe. Such a test poses utmost demands on the wavelength accuracy and previous studies were limited by systematics in the spectrograph wavelength calibration. A substantial advance in the field is therefore expected from the new ultra-stable high-resolution spectrograph Espresso, recently installed at the VLT. In preparation of the fundamental physics related part of the Espresso GTO program, we present a thorough assessment of the Espresso wavelength accuracy and identify possible systematics at each of the different steps involved in the wavelength calibration process. Most importantly, we compare the default wavelength solution, based on the combination of Thorium-Argon arc lamp spectra and a Fabry-P\'erot interferometer, to the fully independent calibration obtained from a laser frequency comb. We find wavelength-dependent discrepancies of up to 24m/s. This substantially exceeds the photon noise and highlights the presence of different sources of systematics, which we characterize in detail as part of this study. Nevertheless, our study demonstrates the outstanding accuracy of Espresso with respect to previously used spectrographs and we show that constraints of a relative change of the fine-structure constant at the $10^{-6}$ level can be obtained with Espresso without being limited by wavelength calibration systematics., Comment: 27 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: This paper aims to (1) compare consumers’ preferences between individual products and bundles as well as (2) investigate some of the factors involved in bundle characteristics that may affect consumer’s preferences. Those factors are complementarity, price level, and discount level. An online survey developed by means of questionnaires were collected from the Portuguese population. Student’s t-tests were used to test the hypothesis formulated and to analyze the consumers’ preferences. The findings corroborate that in a scenario where the bundle does not offer any discounts, preference of individual products is higher. When a 20% discount is assigned to bundles, the overall preference for individual products is still superior. By offering a discount level of 45%, the overall preference for bundles becomes higher. The positive effect of complementarity bundles valuation is confirmed. This is the first approach to evaluate the preferences between bundles and individual products in the Portuguese market. The findings contribute to clarify the customer map within a Business Model Canvas. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the bundle complementarity and discount level effects simultaneously. Abstract: Multiband photometric transit observations or low-resolution spectroscopy (spectro-photometry) are normally used to retrieve the broadband transmission spectra of transiting exoplanets in order to assess the chemical composition of their atmospheres. In this paper, we present an alternative approach for recovering the broadband transmission spectra using chromatic Doppler tomography based on physical modeling through the SOAP tool: CHOCOLATE (CHrOmatiC line prOfiLe tomogrAphy TEchnique). To validate the method and examine its performance, we use observational data recently obtained with the ESPRESSO instrument to retrieve the transmission spectra of the archetypal hot Jupiter HD 209458b. Our findings indicate that the recovered transmission spectrum is in good agreement with the results presented in previous studies, which used different methodologies to extract the spectrum, achieving similar precision. We explored several atmospheric models and inferred from spectral retrieval that a model containing H2O and NH3 is the preferred scenario. The CHOCOLATE methodology is particularly interesting for future studies of exoplanets around young and active stars or moderate to fast rotating stars, considering SOAP's ability to model stellar active regions and the fact that the rotational broadening of spectral lines favors its application. Furthermore, CHOCOLATE will allow the broad transmission spectrum of a planet to be retrieved using high signal-to-noise ratio, high-resolution spectroscopy with the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs), where low-resolution spectroscopy will not always be accessible., Comment: Accepted for Publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: The canonical velocity-dependent one-scale (VOS) model for cosmic string evolution contains a number of free parameters which cannot be obtained ab initio. Therefore it must be calibrated using high resolution numerical simulations. We exploit our state of the art graphically accelerated implementation of the evolution of local Abelian-Higgs string networks to provide a statistically robust calibration of this model. In order to do so, we will make use of the largest set of high resolution simulations carried out to date, for a variety of cosmological expansion rates, and explore the impact of key numerical choices on model calibration, including the dynamic range, lattice spacing, and the choice of numerical estimators for the mean string velocity. This sensitivity exploration shows that certain numerical choices will indeed have consequences for observationally crucial parameters, such as the loop chopping parameter. Abstract: Quantitative studies of the evolution and cosmological consequences of networks of cosmic strings (or other topological defects) require a combination of numerical simulations and analytic modeling with the velocity-dependent one-scale (VOS) model. In previous work, we demonstrated that a GPU-accelerated code for local Abelian-Higgs string networks enables a statistical separation of key dynamical processes affecting the evolution of the string networks and thus a precise calibration of the VOS model. Here we further exploit this code in a detailed study of two important aspects connecting the simulations with the VOS model. First, we study the sensitivity of the model calibration to the presence (or absence) of thermal oscillations due to high gradients in the initial conditions. This is relevant since in some Abelian-Higgs simulations described in the literature a period of artificial (unphysical) dissipation---usually known as cooling---is introduced with the goal of suppressing these oscillations and accelerating the convergence to scaling. We show that a small amount of cooling has no statistically significant impact on the VOS model calibration, while a longer dissipation period does have a noticeable effect. Second, in doing this analysis we also introduce an improved Markov Chain Monte Carlo based pipeline for calibrating the VOS model, Comparison to our previous bootstrap based pipeline shows that the latter accurately determined the best-fit values of the VOS model parameter, but underestimated the uncertainties in some of the parameters. Abstract: We forecast the main cosmological parameter constraints achievable with the CORE space mission which is dedicated to mapping the polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). CORE was recently submitted in response to ESA's fifth call for medium-sized mission proposals (M5). Here we report the results from our pre-submission study of the impact of various instrumental options, in particular the telescope size and sensitivity level, and review the great, transformative potential of the mission as proposed. Specifically, we assess the impact on a broad range of fundamental parameters of our Universe as a function of the expected CMB characteristics, with other papers in the series focusing on controlling astrophysical and instrumental residual systematics. In this paper, we assume that only a few central CORE frequency channels are usable for our purpose, all others being devoted to the cleaning of astrophysical contaminants. On the theoretical side, we assume LCDM as our general framework and quantify the improvement provided by CORE over the current constraints from the Planck 2015 release. We also study the joint sensitivity of CORE and of future Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and Large Scale Structure experiments like DESI and Euclid. Specific constraints on the physics of inflation are presented in another paper of the series. In addition to the six parameters of the base LCDM, which describe the matter content of a spatially flat universe with adiabatic and scalar primordial fluctuations from inflation, we derive the precision achievable on parameters like those describing curvature, neutrino physics, extra light relics, primordial helium abundance, dark matter annihilation, recombination physics, variation of fundamental constants, dark energy, modified gravity, reionization and cosmic birefringence. Abstract: One of the possible extensions of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity consists in allowing for the presence of spacetime torsion. The form of the underlying torsion tensor can be chosen such that the homogeneity and isotropy of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universes is preserved, and it has been recently suggested that such universes may undergo accelerating phases. We use recent low-redshift data, coming from Type Ia Supernova and Hubble parameter measurements, to phenomenologically constrain this class of models under the so-called steady-state torsion assumption of a constant fractional contribution of torsion to the volume expansion. We start by considering models without a cosmological constant (where torsion itself would be expected to yield the current acceleration of the universe) finding, in agreement with other recent works, that these are strongly disfavoured by the data. We then treat these models as one-parameter extensions of $\Lambda$CDM, constraining the relative contribution of torsion to the level of a few percent in appropriate units. Finally, we briefly discuss how these constraints may be improved by forthcoming low-redshift data and check the robustness of our results by studying an alternative to the steady-state torsion parametrization., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; Physics of the Dark Universe (in press)

Abstract: The CMB temperature-redshift relation, T_CMB(z)=T_0(1+z), is a key prediction of the standard cosmology, but is violated in many non standard models. Constraining possible deviations to this law is an effective way to test the LambdaCDM paradigm and to search for hints of new physics. We have determined T_CMB(z), with a precision up to 3%, for a subsample (104 clusters) of the Planck SZ cluster catalog, at redshift in the range 0.01-- 0.94, using measurements of the spectrum of the Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect obtained from Planck temperature maps at frequencies from 70 to 353 GHz. The method adopted to provide individual determinations of T_CMB(z) at cluster redshift relies on the use of SZ intensity change, Delta I_SZ(nu), at different frequencies, and on a Monte-Carlo Markov Chain approach. By applying this method to the sample of 104 clusters, we limit possible deviations of the form T_CMB(z)=T_0(1+z)^(1-beta) to be beta= 0.022 +/- 0.018, at 1 sigma uncertainty, consistent with the prediction of the standard model. Combining these measurements with previously published results we get beta=0.016+/-0.012., submitted to JCAP, 21 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The observational evidence for the acceleration of the universe demonstrates that canonical theories of gravitation and particle physics are incomplete, if not incorrect. A new generation of astronomical facilities will soon carry out precision consistency tests of the standard cosmological model and search for evidence of new physics beyond it. I describe recent work of CAUP's Dark Side team on some of these tests, focusing on the stability of nature's fundamental couplings and tests of unification scenarios.

We describe the velocity‐dependent one‐scale model for string evolution and use it to discuss their basic large‐scale features. We discuss their basic cosmological consequences, in particular for the cosmic microwave background. We also briefly review other cosmological implications such as primordial backgrounds of gravitational waves and ultra‐high energy cosmic rays.

Abstract: We extend our recent work on the effects of a time-varying fine-structure constant $\alpha$ in the cosmic microwave background, by providing a thorough analysis of the degeneracies between $\alpha$ and the other cosmological parameters, and discussing ways to break these with both existing and/or forthcoming data. In particular, we present the state-of-the-art CMB constraints on $\alpha$, through a combined analysis of the BOOMERanG, MAXIMA and DASI datasets. We also present a novel discussion of the constraints on $\alpha$ coming from large-scale structure observations, focusing in particular on the power spectrum from the 2dF survey. Our results are consistent with no variation in $\alpha$ from the epoch of recombination to the present day, and restrict any such (relative) variation to be less than about 4%. We show that the forthcoming MAP and (particularly) Planck experiments will be able to break most of the currently existing degeneracies between $\alpha$ and other parameters, and measure $\alpha$ to better than percent accuracy., Comment: 11 pages in RevTex4 format. Abstract: I use a combination of state-of-the-art numerical simulations and analytic modelling to discuss the scaling properties of cosmic defect networks, including superstrings. Particular attention is given to the role of extra degrees of freedom in the evolution of these networks. Compared to the 'plain vanilla' case of Goto-Nambu strings, three such extensions play important but distinct roles in the network dynamics: the presence of charges/currents on the string worldsheet, the existence of junctions, and the possibility of a hierarchy of string tensions. Abstract: The detection and characterization of an increasing variety of exoplanets has been in part possible thanks to the continuous development of high-resolution, stable spectrographs, and using the Doppler radial-velocity (RV) method. The Cross Correlation Function (CCF) method is one of the traditional approaches for RV extraction. More recently, template matching was introduced as an advantageous alternative for M-dwarf stars. In this paper, we describe a new implementation of template matching within a semi-Bayesian framework, providing a more statistically principled characterization of the RV measurements. In this context, a common RV shift is used to describe the difference between each spectral order of a given stellar spectrum and a template built from the available observations. Posterior probability distributions are obtained for the relative RV associated with each spectrum, after marginalizing with respect to the continuum. This methodology was named S-BART: Semi-Bayesian Approach for RVs with Template-matching, and it can be applied to HARPS and ESPRESSO. The application of our method to HARPS archival observations of Barnard's star allowed us to validate our implementation against HARPS-TERRA and SERVAL. Then, we applied it to 33 ESPRESSO targets, evaluating its performance and comparing it with the CCF method. We found a decrease in the median RV scatter of \sim 10\% and \sim 4\% for M- and K-type stars, respectively. S-BART yields more precise RV estimates than the CCF method, particularly in the case of M-type stars where a median uncertainty of \sim 15 cm/s is achieved over 309 observations. Further, we estimated the nightly zero point (NZP) of ESPRESSO, finding a weighted NZP scatter below \sim 0.7 m/s. 47. The status of varying constants: a review of the physics, searches and implications.

Abstract: The observational evidence for the recent acceleration of the universe demonstrates that canonical theories of cosmology and particle physics are incomplete—if not incorrect—and that new physics is out there, waiting to be discovered. A key task for the next generation of laboratory and astrophysical facilities is to search for, identify and ultimately characterize this new physics. Here we highlight recent developments in tests of the stability of nature’s fundamental couplings, which provide a direct handle on new physics: a detection of variations will be revolutionary, but even improved null results provide competitive constraints on a range of cosmological and particle physics paradigms. A joint analysis of all currently available data shows a preference for variations of α and μ at about the two-sigma level, but inconsistencies between different sub-sets (likely due to hidden systematics) suggest that these statistical preferences need to be taken with caution. On the other hand, these measurements strongly constrain Weak Equivalence Principle violations. Plans and forecasts for forthcoming studies with facilities such as ALMA, ESPRESSO and the ELT, which should clarify these issues, are also discussed, and synergies with other probes are briefly highlighted. The goal is to show how a new generation of precision consistency tests of the standard paradigm will soon become possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
