Abstract

The injection of energetic neutral particles into the plasma of magnetic confinement fusion reactors is a widely-accepted method for heating such plasmas; various types of neutral beam are also used for diagnostic purposes. Accurate atomic data are required to properly model beam penetration into the plasma and to interpret photoemission spectra from both the beam particles themselves (e.g. beam emission spectroscopy) and from plasma impurities with which they interact (e.g. charge exchange recombination spectroscopy). This paper reviews and compares theoretical methods for calculating ionization, excitation and charge exchange cross sections applied to several important processes relevant to neutral hydrogen beams, including H + Be ^4+ and H + H ^+ . In particular, a new cross section for the proton-impact ionization of H (1s) is recommended which is significantly larger than that previously accepted at fusion-relevant energies. Coefficients for an empirical fit function to this cross section and to that of the first excited states of H are provided and uncertainties estimated. The propagation of uncertainties in this cross section in modeling codes under JET-like conditions has been studied and the newly-recommended values determined to have a significant effect on the predicted beam attenuation. In addition to accurate calculations of collisional atomic data, the use of these data in codes modeling beam penetration and photoemission for fusion-relevant plasma density and temperature profiles is discussed. In particular, the discrepancies in the modeling of impurities are reported. The present paper originates from a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on the topic of fundamental atomic data for neutral beam modeling that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ran from 2017 to 2022; this project brought together ten research groups in the fields of fusion plasma modeling and collisional cross section calculations. Data calculated during the CRP is summarized in an appendix and is available online in the IAEA’s atomic database, CollisionDB.

Abstract In May and June 2020, an outbreak of methanol poisoning arose in the southwest United States linked to ingestion of contaminated hand sanitizer imported during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, ultimately resulting in over a dozen hospitalizations and at least four deaths in New Mexico and Arizona. In this report, we describe one of these cases in which profound methanol intoxication was successfully treated with the Tablo® Hemodialysis System, the first reported case of toxic alcohol poisoning treated with this novel device. We carry out a formal regression analysis of the serial methanol levels obtained in this case to conservatively estimate that intermittent hemodialysis with Tablo achieved a clearance of methanol of 239 mL/min (95% confidence interval, 173–305 mL/min), a clearance that is well within the previously published standard of care. We conclude by reviewing both the treatment of toxic alcohol poisoning and the determinants of small molecule clearance with hemodialysis, emphasizing the importance of optimizing the dialytic treatment of intoxications with extended treatment times and the use of high-efficiency dialyzers.

Abstract

Synopsis We present a classical study of differential electron emission cross sections for highly-charged projectiles at υp ∼ 10 a.u. impinging on water molecules [1, 2]. Comparisons with Continuum Distorted Wave Eikonal Initial State theoretical results and with experimental data are presented. We implement a time-dependent screening effect in our model and account for the molecular target structure by means of a three-center potential.

Abstract

Synopsis Using measured dissociation branching ratios and theoretical dissociation energies, we extracted semi-empirical estimates of the energy deposit due to electron excitation in CnN+-He collisions at v=2.2 a.u. We compared these estimates to calculations based on the IAE (Independent Atom and Electron) model where the atom(ion)-atom excitation is treated within the Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) approach. A good agreement has been found. This atomic approach is also able to reproduce the experimental Kinetic Energy Release (KER) in CN+ dissociation measured in 3.5 a.u CN+-He collision.

Abstract

Objetivo: en este estudio se analizan las razones o motivos del abandono del tratamiento en la Comunidad Terapéutica de Proyecto Hombre de Navarra. Material y métodos: se cuenta con una muestra de 61 pacientes que, tras permanecer en la Comunidad Terapéutica un período mínimo de 3 meses, han abandonado posteriormente la misma. Resultados: los resultados obtenidos muestran que el motivo de abandono más frecuentemente señalado se relaciona con los límites impuestos por el propio programa terapéutico (70,5% de los casos), seguido por la consideración de que ya se han alcanzado los objetivos propuestos inicialmente (49,2% de los casos), por el cansancio de los grupos de tratamiento (el 39,3% de los casos) y el consumo o el deseo de consumir drogas (el 34,4%). Por otra parte, se comparan los pacientes que abandonan temporalmente la terapia con aquellos que la abandonan de forma definitiva. Se comentan las implicaciones de este estudio para la investigación y para la práctica clínica. Objective: in this paper, the reasons for dropout in the Proyecto Hombre Therapeutic Community in Navarre are analysed. Material and methods: the sample was composed by 61 subjects who dropped out after having remained in this Therapeutic Community at least a minimum period of 3 months. Results: results showed that the most frequent reason for dropping out was related to the limits imposed by the therapeutic program (70.5% of the cases), followed by patient’s consideration that the objectives had already been achieved (49.2% of the cases), boredom of taking part to the treatment groups (39.3% of the cases) and by the consumption or the desire to consume drugs (34.4%). The rest of the reasons studied affect a smaller number of cases. At the same time, the patients that dropped out temporarily and those that dropped out definitively are compared. Implications of these results for further research and clinical practice are commented upon. Abstract

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. 13. Calculation of Ionization, Excitation and Electron Capture Cross Sections for Be 4+ +H(2s, 2p) Collisions.

Abstract

A computational study of Be 4+ +H(2s, 2p) collisions has been carried out employing the Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method for the impact energy range from 20 keV/u to 1000 keV/u. The integral n partial cross sections for H(n) excitation and Be 3+ (n) electron capture and, the total ionization and electron capture cross sections are calculated and compared to recent semiclassical results. A general good agreement is observed for the n partial and total electron capture and ionization cross sections. 14. Anti-Trypanosomatidae Activity of Essential Oils and Their Main Components from Selected Medicinal Plants.

Abstract

Kinetoplastida is a group of flagellated protozoa characterized by the presence of a kinetoplast, a structure which is part of a large mitochondria and contains DNA. Parasites of this group include genera such as Leishmania, that cause disease in humans and animals, and Phytomonas, that are capable of infecting plants. Due to the lack of treatments, the low efficacy, or the high toxicity of the employed therapeutic agents there is a need to seek potential alternative treatments. In the present work, the antiparasitic activity on Leishmania infantum and Phytomonas davidi of 23 essential oils (EOs) from plants of the Lamiaceae and Asteraceae families, extracted by hydrodistillation (HD) at laboratory scale and steam distillation (SD) in a pilot plant, were evaluated. The chemical compositions of the EOs were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Additionally, the cytotoxic activity on mammalian cells of the major components from the most active EOs was evaluated, and their anti- Phytomonas and anti- Leishmania effects analyzed. L. infantum was more sensitive to the EOs than P. davidi . The EOs with the best anti-kinetoplastid activity were S. montana , T. vulgaris , M. suaveolens , and L. luisieri . Steam distillation increased the linalyl acetate, β-caryophyllene, and trans-α-necrodyl acetate contents of the EOs, and decreased the amount of borneol and 1,8 cineol. The major active components of the EOs were tested, with thymol being the strongest anti- Phytomonas compound followed by carvacrol. Our study identified potential treatments against kinetoplastids.

16. A classical and semiclassical study of collisions between X q+ ions and water molecules.

Abstract

Collisions of He 2+ , Li 3+ and C 3+ ions with water molecules are studied at energies ranging between 20 keV u -1 and 500 keV u -1 . Three methods are employed: the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC), the expansion of the scattering wave function in terms of asymptotic frozen molecular orbitals (AFMO) and a lattice method to numerically solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (GridTDSE). Total cross sections for single ionization, single electron capture, transfer ionization and electron production are calculated and compared with previous close-coupling calculations and experiments. The fragmentation branching ratios are discussed.

17. Ionization and Single and Double Electron Capture in Proton-Ar Collisions.

Abstract

Total cross sections for formation of H and H - , and electron production, in H + + Ar collisions have been calculated at energies between 100 eV and 200 keV by employing two methods: for E < 10 keV, a semiclassical treatment with an expansion in a basis of electronic wave functions of the ArH + quasimolecule and, for E > 10 keV, the switching-classical-trajectory-Monte Carlo method (s-CTMC). The semiclassical calculation involves transitions to molecular autoionizing states, calculated by applying a block-diagonalization technique. The s-CTMC method is adept to treat two-electron processes and yields total cross sections for H - formation in reasonably good agreement with the experimental data. Cross sections for electron- and H-production processes, which are dominated by one-electron transitions, are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Total cross-sections for electron capture and electron production in proton collisions with N2, CO and H2O, are evaluated using a classical trajectory Monte Carlo treatment for collision energies between 30 and 3000 keV. A semiclassical close-coupling treatment has been also employed for proton collisions with H2O, to discuss the accuracy of the CTMC treatment. 19. Influence of nuclear exchange on nonadiabatic electron processes in H(+)+H2 collisions.

Abstract

H(+)+H(2) collisions are studied by means of a semiclassical approach that explicitly accounts for nuclear rearrangement channels in nonadiabatic electron processes. A set of classical trajectories is used to describe the nuclear motion, while the electronic degrees of freedom are treated quantum mechanically in terms of a three-state expansion of the collision wavefunction. We describe electron capture and vibrational excitation, which can also involve nuclear exchange and dissociation, in the E = 2-1000 eV impact energy range. We compare dynamical results obtained with two parametrizations of the potential energy surface of H(3)(+) ground electronic state. Total cross sections for E > 10 eV agree with previous results using a vibronic close-coupling expansion, and with experimental data for E < 10 eV. Additionally, some prototypical features of both nuclear and electron dynamics at low E are discussed.

Abstract

The aims of this study is to carry out a long-term follow-up evaluation of a well-established therapeutic community treatment for addictions in Navarre (Spain) and to make a comparison between the program completers and the dropouts, as well as between relapsing and nonrelapsing patients, on a broad set of variables. A long-term follow-up design (mean of 6 years after leaving treatment) was used to analyze the outcomes of the therapeutic program. The sample consisted of 155 subjects (113 completers and 42 dropouts). A personal interview was carried out with each one of the located subjects. The interviews took place between September 2000 and September 2004. Treatment "dropouts" manifested a higher and earlier rate both of relapses, and of new treatments for their drug addiction than the completion group. The program was also effective in reducing criminal behavior and improving the state of health. Significant differences were found across outcome variables when comparison was made between treatment completers and "dropouts." All subjects improved on outcome variables after receiving the treatment. When relapsing and nonrelapsing patients were compared, significant outcome differences were also found between groups. The study's limitations are noted and future needed research is suggested.

Abstract

In this paper, a study examining high-risk situations for relapse is presented. The sample consisted of 72 participants (51 male and 21 female) who had relapsed after having received a residential psychological treatment for drug addition in a therapeutic community in Spain. In order to analyze what personal, environmental or social factors were the most immediate triggers of relapse, a personal interview, using the Relapse Interview, was administered to each one of the relapsed patients. Results showed that most of the relapses took place during the first year after completing the treatment program. Likewise, the factors most frequently cited for relapse were the following: to cope with negative emotional states (49.5%), to be unable to resist temptations or impulses to consume (17.5%), to test personal control (10.3%) and to cope with interpersonal conflicts (9.3%). Results indicate thatmost factors were of an intrapersonal nature. Implications of these results for further research and clinical practice are commented upon.

22. Electrons ejected with half the projectile velocity and the saddle point mechanism in ion-atom collisions

Abstract

Full three-dimensional ejected electron momentum distributions for proton impact ionization of atomic hydrogen are calculated for impact energies 10 through 50 keV. The distributions show a peak in the longitudinal momentum at half the projectile impact velocity: the v/2 peak. A quantitative assessment of saddle point ionization, based on quantum and classical analysis, reveals that the v/2 peak is a false indicator for this mechanism. The influence of the potential saddle on ionization is seen to decrease rapidly from 10 to 50 keV.
