European agriculture is facing tremendous challenges related to the rapid decrease in farm populations, competitiveness on open markets and the preservation of natural resources. Grasslands, which are highly significant for nature conservation often face land-use competition with arable cropping, urbanisation and other uses. Farmers need dedicated innovations to improve the economic performance of grasslands and their effective implementation in practice. This requires co-creation of knowledge between researchers and farmland practitioners, as was broadly pointed out by the European Commission. This paper describes a novel approach for creating a collaborative space for grassland innovations contributing to profitability of European grassland farms while preserving environmental benefits. Innovative modes of collaboration between practice and science are enabled by an international thematic network across eight European member states. A methodology that serves to collect farmers’ innovative ideas and to stimulate collaboration among various stakeholders (farmers’ groups, extension services, education and research) including cross-border collaborations, where grassland-related knowledge is made available for local conditions. This interactive innovation model fosters knowledge exchange and establishes a farmland-specific information management system. The aim is to stimulate a renewed, collaborative innovation culture for European Union (EU) grasslands. The methods are conceptualised and put into practice by the thematic network project Inno4Grass funded under Horizon 2020.

Agriculture numérique, une (r)évolution en marche dans les territoires ? - Avant-propos

En 2018, la revue Inra Productions Animales devient entièrement numérique et en accès libre ! Chers abonnés, chers lecteurs, En 2018, la revue INRA Productions Animales entre dans sa 31ème année ! En 30 ans, la revue a publié un peu plus de 1200 articles contribuant ainsi fortement à la synthèse et au ransfert des résultats obtenus par l’INRA, ses collaborateurs et ses partenaires dans le domaine des sciences animales et de l’élevage. La revue INRA Productions Animales s’adresse à un large public de professionnels des filières animales, d’agents du développement et des pouvoirs publics, d’étudiants, d’enseignants et de chercheurs, ainsi qu’à la société en général. La spécificité de nos articles est de combiner la volonté de toucher ce large public avec l’exigence de rigueur de l’écriture scientifique d’une revue à comité de lecture indexée dans le « Web of Science ». Au moment où les filières animales doivent construire leur avenir dans un contexte économique incertain et face à des demandes sociétales de plus en plus exigeantes sur les conditions d’élevage des animaux, sur la qualité de leurs produits et sur l’impact environnemental des modes de production, nous sommes convaincus qu’une revue de synthèse scientifique dans le domaine des sciences animales et de l’élevage est indispensable. Inra Productions Animales continuera à publier des articles de synthèse sur des résultats de recherche et leurs applications concernant toutes les espèces d’intérêt zootechnique tout en apportant aussi un éclairage scientifique, dépassionné et objectivé sur les questions sociétales relatives à l’élevage. Le dernier numéro spécial de la revue – « L’élevage en Europe : une diversité de services et d’impacts » – en est l’illustration. Nous poursuivrons dans ce sens en cherchant à ouvrir plus largement encore nos pages aux sciences humaines et sociales. La revue cherchera aussi à élargir son positionnement dans la francophonie et son rayonnement international en suscitant des articles de nos collègues étrangers. Enfin, nous renforcerons notre partenariat avec les journées scientifiques et techniques des différentes filières animales. Ce sera le cas dès cette année avec les « Rencontres Recherches Ruminants – 3R » dont nous publierons les articles de synthèse. Pour atteindre ces objectifs et mieux répondre aux besoins de nos lecteurs, nous avons entrepris une réflexion sur notre modèle technique et économique qui nous conduit à mettre en œuvre des changements importants à partir de 2018. La presse scientifique, comme l’ensemble de la presse, doit faire face à des changements profonds des habitudes de lecture avec la montée en puissance rapide du web et des supports numériques. Par ailleurs, l’INRA s’engage résolument dans une politique de libre accès à l’information scientifique avec l’archive ouverte des productions de l’INRA (« ProdInra ») par exemple. La revue INRA Productions Animales a été pionnière en la matière en ouvrant dès 1996 un site web et en offrant un large accès au téléchargement de ses articles tout en maintenant une édition papier de la revue. Suite à un appel d’offre du Commissariat Général à la Stratégie et à la Prospective du gouvernement français, l’INRA a analysé les possibilités d’évolution des pratiques et des systèmes agricoles français vers des systèmes de production plus durables conciliant performances productives, économiques, environnementales et sociales. Une méthodologie d’aide à la conception et à l’évaluation de systèmes a été développée à cette occasion. Elle s’appuie sur un répertoire de plus de 200 pratiques agricoles élémentaires dont l’impact a été qualifié sur 35 indicateurs de performances, ainsi que sur une table de compatibilité entre pratiques élémentaires. Deux études de cas fondées sur des modalités différentes d’utilisation de cette méthodologie sont présentées : i) la conception pas à pas de système de production par incorporation progressive de pratiques élémentaires à partir d’une pratique d’entrée à effet majeur, pour accroître l’autonomie alimentaire en production bovine laitière en valorisant la prairie ; ii) l’évaluation à postériori des performances de systèmes en transcrivant sous forme de pratiques élémentaires des leviers d’action et marges de progrès identifiés à dire d’expert pour améliorer la compétitivité de la filière poulet de chair par la mise en place de deux systèmes de production très contrastés mais complémentaires. Les tendances d’évolution des performances des systèmes de production ainsi simulés ou reconstitués sont discutées. Dans les situations d’impact ambivalent d’une pratique sur une performance, le recours au descriptif détaillé des pratiques permet le plus souvent de réduire l’incertitude en prenant en compte les situations associées à chaque type d’impact.

Abstract A low-temperature electron spin resonance study has been carried out on large-area high-purity polycrystalline two-dimensional few monolayer (ML) 2H MoS2 films synthesized by sulfurization of Mo layers, with intent to atomically assess mobility-degrading detrimental point defects. This reveals the presence of a distinct previously unreported anisotropic defect of axial symmetry about the c-axis characterized by g // = 2.00145 and g ⊥ = 2.0027, with corresponding density (spin S = ½) ~3 × 1012 cm−2 for a 4 ML thick film. Inverse correlation of the defect density with grain size points to a domain boundary associated defect, inherently incorporated during sample growth. Based on the analysis of ESR signal features in combination with literature data, the signal is tentatively ascribed to the a (di)sulfur antisite defect (S or S2 substituting for a Mo atom). Beset by these defects, the grain boundaries thus emerge as an intolerable threat for the carrier mobility and layer functionality.

Sunscreens have been shown to protect against UVR-induced DNA damage in human skin under laboratory conditions. We presently extended these observations to real-life conditions in volunteers after their ordinary exposure habits during summer holidays. Volunteers were randomly assigned to a control group and an educated group supplied with a SPF ≥50 sunscreen and receiving instructions for use. A questionnaire was used to determine the extent of exposure. No difference in average solar UVR exposure was found between the two groups. DNA photoprotection was first assessed by, to our knowledge, a previously unreported noninvasive assay on the basis of the quantification of pyrimidine dimers released by DNA repair in urine. Damage was also quantified in the nuclear DNA extracted from the roof of suction blisters collected after recreational exposure. The urinary concentration of photoproducts was significantly higher in the control than in the educated group. The same trend was observed for the level of photoproducts in the DNA from suction blisters. The unambiguous observation of an efficient photoprotection against DNA damage afforded by sunscreen under real-life conditions provides strong support for the efficiency of the sunscreens. A new 5-year Common Agricultural Policy has been in place since January 2023. Like its predecessors, this new policy will fail to deliver significant climatic and environmental benefits. We show how the Green Architecture of the policy relying on the three instruments of conditionality, eco-schemes, and agri-environment and climate measures could have been used more consistently and effectively. Our proposals are based on core principles of public economics and fiscal federalism as well as on research results in agronomy and ecology. Conditionality criteria are the minimal requirements that every agricultural producer must meet. Farmers should be rewarded for efforts that go beyond these basic requirements through eco-schemes for global public goods complemented by agri-environment and climate measures centred on local public goods. Eco-schemes should cover the whole agricultural area by targeting permanent grasslands, crop diversification, and green cover and non-productive agro-ecological infrastructures. Restructuring farmer-researcher relationships and addressing complexity and uncertainty through joint exploration are at the heart of On-Farm Experimentation (OFE). OFE describes new approaches to agricultural research and innovation that are embedded in real-world farm management, and reflects new demands for decentralized and inclusive research that bridges sources of knowledge and fosters open innovation. Here we propose that OFE research could help to transform agriculture globally. We highlight the role of digitalization, which motivates and enables OFE by dramatically increasing scales and complexity when investigating agricultural challenges., (© 2021. This paper gives an overview of development of the EU-bioeconomy, 2014-2020. The Vision of the new Circular Bio-based Economy, CBE is presented: Unlocking the full potential of all types of sustainably sourced biomass, crop residues, industrial side-streams, and wastes by transforming it into value-added products. The resulting product portfolio consists of a wide spectrum of value-added products, addressing societal and consumer needs. Food and feed, bio-based chemicals, materials, health-promoting products; and bio-based fuels. The pillars of CBE are described, including biotechnology, microbial production, enzyme technology, green chemistry, integrated physical/chemical processing, policies, conducive framework conditions and public private partnerships. Drivers of CBE are analyzed: Biomass supply, biorefineries, value chain clusters, rural development, farmers, foresters and mariners; urgent need for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and stopping biodiversity loss. Improved framework conditions can be drivers but also obstacles if not updated to the era of circularity. Key figures, across the entire BBI-JU project portfolio (2014-2020) are provided, including expansion into biomass feedstocks, terrestrial and aquatic, and an impressive broadening of bio-based product portfolio, including higher-value, health-promoting products for man, animal, plants and soil. Parallel to this, diversification of industrial segments and types of funding instruments developed, reflecting industrial needs and academic research involvement. Impact assessment is highlighted. A number of specific recommendations are given; e.g., including international win/win CBE-collaborations, as e.g., expanding African EU collaboration into CBE. In contrast to fossil resources biological resources are found worldwide. A checklist of the species of leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) of El Salvador is presented based on data from literature and a digitization project of the Bechyné collection of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS). The RBINS collections contain a total of 2797 individual chrysomelid specimens from El Salvador, sorted into 89 species and 132 genera. In total, the current checklist contains 420 species, of which 33 are new records for El Slavador from the Bechyné collection. In these collections, there are also ten nomina nuda named by Bechyné, which need further study. The leaf beetle diversity in El Salvador, partly due to the country's unstable political history, remains poorly studied, and many (new) species await discovery. This checklist provides a baseline for further study in El Salvador and nearby region.

Background: Association studies are of great interest to identify genes explaining trait variation since they deal with more than just a few alleles like classical QTL analyses. They are usually performed using collections representing a wide range of variability but which could present a genetic substructure. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that association studies can be performed using synthetic varieties obtained after several panmictic generations. This demonstration is based on an example of association between the gibberellic acid insensitive gene (GAI) polymorphism and leaf length polymorphism in 'Herbie', a synthetic variety of perennial ryegrass., Methods: Leaf growth parameters, consisted of leaf length, maximum leaf elongation rate (LERmax) and leaf elongation duration (LED), were evaluated in spring and autumn on 216 plants of Herbie with three replicates. For each plant, a sequence of 370 bp in GAI was analysed for polymorphism., Results: Genetic effect was highly significant for all traits. Broad sense heritabilities were higher for leaf length and LERmax with about 0.7 in each period and 0.5 considering both periods than for LED with about 0.4 in each period and 0.3 considering both periods. GAI was highly polymorphic with an average of 12 bp between two consecutive SNPs and 39 haplotypes in which 9 were more frequent. Linkage disequilibrium declined rapidly with distance with r 2 values lower than 0.2 beyond 150 bp. Sequence polymorphism of GAI explained 8-14% of leaf growth parameter variation. A single SNP explained 4% of the phenotypic variance of leaf length in both periods which represents a difference of 33 mm on an average of 300 mm., Conclusions: Synthetic varieties in which linkage disequilibrium declines rapidly with distance are suitable for association studies using the "candidate gene" approach. GAI polymorphism was found to be associated with leaf length polymorphism which was more correlated to LERmax than to LED in Herbie. It is a good candidate to explain leaf length variation in other plant material.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent approximately 3% of the human proteome. They are involved in a large number of diverse processes and, therefore, are the most prominent class of pharmacological targets. Besides rhodopsin, X-ray structures of classical GPCRs have only recently been resolved, including the beta1 and beta2 adrenergic receptors and the A2A adenosine receptor. This lag in obtaining GPCR structures is due to several tedious steps that are required before beginning the first crystallization experiments: protein expression, detergent solubilization, purification, and stabilization. With the aim to obtain active membrane receptors for functional and crystallization studies, we recently reported a screen of expression conditions for approximately 100 GPCRs in Escherichia coli, providing large amounts of inclusion bodies, a prerequisite for the subsequent refolding step. Here, we report a novel artificial chaperone-assisted refolding procedure adapted for the GPCR inclusion body refolding, followed by protein purification and characterization. The refolding of two selected targets, the mouse cannabinoid receptor 1 (muCB1R) and the human parathyroid hormone receptor 1 (huPTH1R), was achieved from solubilized receptors using detergent and cyclodextrin as protein folding assistants. We could demonstrate excellent affinity of both refolded and purified receptors for their respective ligands. G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent approximately 3% of human proteome and the most prominent class of pharmacological targets. Despite their important role in many functions, only the X-ray structures of rhodopsin, and more recently of the beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenergic receptors, have been resolved. Structural studies of GPCRs require that several tedious preliminary steps be fulfilled before setting up the first crystallization experiments: protein expression, detergent solubilization, purification, and stabilization. Here we report on screening expression conditions of approximately 100 GPCRs in Escherichia coli with a view to obtain large amounts of inclusion bodies, a prerequisite to the subsequent refolding step. A set of optimal conditions, including appropriate vectors (Gateway pDEST17oi), strain (C43), and fermentation at high optical density, define the best first instance choice. Beyond this minimal setting, however, the rate of success increases significantly with the number of conditions tested. In contrast with experiments based on a single GPCR expression, our approach provides statistically significant results and indicates that up to 40% of GPCRs can be expressed as inclusion bodies in quantities sufficient for subsequent refolding, solubilization, and purification.

Adaptation to the environment and reproduction are dependent on the date of flowering in the season. The objectives of this paper were to evaluate the effect of photoperiod on flowering date of the model species for legume crops, Medicago truncatula and to describe genetic architecture of this trait in multiple mapping populations. The effect of photoperiod (12 and 18 h) was analysed on eight lines. Quantitative variation in three recombinant inbred lines (RILs) populations involving four parental lines was evaluated, and QTL detection was carried out. Flowering occurred earlier in long than in short photoperiods. Modelling the rate of progression to flowering with temperature and photoperiod gave high R2, with line-specific parameters that indicated differential responses of the lines to both photoperiod and temperature. QTL detection showed a QTL on chromosome 7 that was common to all populations and seasons. Taking advantage of the multiple mapping populations, it was condensed into a single QTL with a support interval of only 0.9 cM. In a bioanalysis, six candidate genes were identified in this interval. This design also indicated other genomic regions that were involved in flowering date variation more specifically in one population or one season. The analysis on three different mapping populations detected more QTLs than on a single population, revealed more alleles and gave a more precise position of the QTLs that were common to several populations and/or seasons. Identification of candidate genes was a result of integration of QTL analysis and genomics in M. truncatula.

Synthetic varieties obtained after three to four panmictic generations are variable, not structured and so can be used for association studies. The pattern of linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay determines whether a genome scan or a candidate gene approach can be used for an association study between genotype and phenotype. Our goal was to evaluate the effect of the number of parents used to build the synthetic varieties on the pattern of LD decay. LD was investigated in the gibberelic acid insensitive gene (GAI) region in three synthetic varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) chosen for their contrasted number of parents in the initial polycrosses. Results were compared with those obtained from a core collection. STS and SSR markers were used to evaluate variation, structuration and LD in each variety. As expected, the varieties variability increased with the number of parents almost up to the core collection variability. No structuration was observed in the varieties. Significant LDs were observed up to 1.6 Mb in a variety originated from six related parents and not above 174 kb in a variety originated from 336 parents. These results suggest that a candidate gene approach can be used when varieties have a large number of parents and a genome scan approach can be envisaged in specific regions when varieties have a low number of parents. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend to estimate the pattern of LD decay in the population and in the genomic region studied before performing an association study.

In many legume crops, especially in forage legumes, aerial morphogenesis defined as growth and development of plant organs, is an essential trait as it determines plant and seed biomass as well as forage quality (protein concentration, dry matter digestibility). Medicago truncatula is a model species for legume crops. A set of 29 accessions of M. truncatula was evaluated for aerial morphogenetic traits. A recombinant inbred lines (RILs) mapping population was used for analysing quantitative variation in aerial morphogenetic traits and QTL detection. Genes described to be involved in aerial morphogenetic traits in other species were mapped to analyse co-location between QTLs and genes. A large variation was found for flowering date, morphology and dynamics of branch elongation among the 29 accessions and within the RILs population. Flowering date was negatively correlated to main stem and branch length. QTLs were detected for all traits, and each QTL explained from 5.2 to 59.2% of the phenotypic variation. A QTL explaining a large part of genetic variation for flowering date and branch growth was found on chromosome 7. The other chromosomes were also involved in the variation detected in several traits. Mapping of candidate genes indicates a co-location between a homologue of Constans gene or a flowering locus T (FT) gene and the QTL of flowering date on chromosome 7. Other candidate genes for several QTLs are described.

Phage p2, a member of the lactococcal 936 phage species, infects Lactococcus lactis strains by binding initially to specific carbohydrate receptors using its receptor-binding protein (RBP). The structures of p2 RBP, a homotrimeric protein composed of three domains, and of its complex with a neutralizing llama VH domain (VHH5) have been determined (S. Spinelli, A. Desmyter, C. T. Verrips, H. J. de Haard, S. Moineau, and C. Cambillau, Nat. Struct. Mol. Biol. 13:85-89, 2006). Here, we show that VHH5 was able to neutralize 12 of 50 lactococcal phages belonging to the 936 species. Moreover, escape phage mutants no longer neutralized by VHH5 were isolated from 11 of these phages. All of the mutations (but one) cluster in the RBP/VHH5 interaction surface that delineates the receptor-binding area. A glycerol molecule, observed in the 1.7-A resolution structure of RBP, was found to bind tightly (Kd= 0.26 microM) in a crevice located in this area. Other saccharides bind RBP with comparable high affinity. These data prove the saccharidic nature of the bacterial receptor recognized by phage p2 and identify the position of its binding site in the RBP head domain.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is an autotetraploid, allogamous and heterozygous species whose cultivars are synthetic populations. The breeders apply selection pressure for some agronomic traits within a breeding pool to increase the frequency of favorable individuals. The objective of this study was to investigate the differentiation level among seven cultivars originating from one breeding program, and between these cultivars and the breeding pool, with eight SSR markers. These highly polymorphic and codominant markers, together with recent population genetic statistics extended to autotetraploids, offer tools to analyse genetic diversity in alfalfa. The number of alleles per locus varied between 3 and 24. All loci were at a panmictic equilibrium in the cultivars, except one, probably because of null alleles. With seven SSR loci, each cultivar was at panmictic equilibrium. The mean gene diversity was high, ranging from 0.665 to 0.717 in the cultivars. The parameter F(ST) indicated a low but significant diversity among cultivars. Among 21 pairs of cultivars, 15 were significantly different. The breeding pool also had a high diversity, and was significantly different from each cultivar except the most recent one. Considering the characteristics of the breeding program and the mode of cultivar elaboration, we found that they were unable to generate a large variety differentiation. Estimation of population genetics parameters at SSR loci can be applied for assessing the differences between cultivars or populations, either for variety distinction or the management of genetic resources.

Background: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a major forage crop. The genetic progress is slow in this legume species because of its autotetraploidy and allogamy. The genetic structure of this species makes the construction of genetic maps difficult. To reach this objective, and to be able to detect QTLs in segregating populations, we used the available codominant microsatellite markers (SSRs), most of them identified in the model legume Medicago truncatula from EST database. A genetic map was constructed with AFLP and SSR markers using specific mapping procedures for autotetraploids. The tetrasomic inheritance was analysed in an alfalfa mapping population., Results: We have demonstrated that 80% of primer pairs defined on each side of SSR motifs in M. truncatula EST database amplify with the alfalfa DNA. Using a F1 mapping population of 168 individuals produced from the cross of 2 heterozygous parental plants from Magali and Mercedes cultivars, we obtained 599 AFLP markers and 107 SSR loci. All but 3 SSR loci showed a clear tetrasomic inheritance. For most of the SSR loci, the double-reduction was not significant. For the other loci no specific genotypes were produced, so the significant double-reduction could arise from segregation distortion. For each parent, the genetic map contained 8 groups of four homologous chromosomes. The lengths of the maps were 2649 and 3045 cM, with an average distance of 7.6 and 9.0 cM between markers, for Magali and Mercedes parents, respectively. Using only the SSR markers, we built a composite map covering 709 cM., Conclusions: Compared to diploid alfalfa genetic maps, our maps cover about 88-100% of the genome and are close to saturation. The inheritance of the codominant markers (SSR) and the pattern of linkage repulsions between markers within each homology group are consistent with the hypothesis of a tetrasomic meiosis in alfalfa. Except for 2 out of 107 SSR markers, we found a similar order of markers on the chromosomes between the tetraploid alfalfa and M. truncatula genomes indicating a high level of colinearity between these two species. These maps will be a valuable tool for alfalfa breeding and are being used to locate QTLs.

The first results of a medium-scale structural genomics program clearly demonstrate the value of using a medium-throughput crystallization approach based on a two-step procedure: a large screening step employing robotics, followed by manual or automated optimization of the crystallization conditions. The structural genomics program was based on cloning in the Gateway vectors pDEST17, introducing a long 21-residue tail at the N-terminus. So far, this tail has not appeared to hamper crystallization. In ten months, 25 proteins were subjected to crystallization; 13 yielded crystals, of which ten led to usable data sets and five to structures. Furthermore, the results using a robot dispensing 50-200 nl drops indicate that smaller protein samples can be used for crystallization. These still partial results might indicate present and future directions for those who have to make crucial choices concerning their crystallization platform in structural genomics programs.

European cultivars of white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) grow poorly in limed or calcareous soils. However, Egyptian genotypes are grown successfully in highly calcareous soil and show no stress symptoms. To examine their physiological responses to alkaline soil and develop potential screens for tolerance, three experiments were conducted in limed and non-limed (neutral pH) soil. Measurements included net CO2 uptake, and the partitioning of Fe2+ and Fe3+ and soluble and insoluble Ca in stem and leaf tissue. Intolerant plants showed clear symptoms of stress, whereas stress in the Egyptian genotypes and in L pilosus Murr. (a tolerant species) was less marked. Only the intolerant plants became chlorotic and this contributed to their reduced net CO2 uptake in the limed soil. In contrast, Egyptian genotypes and L pilosus showed no change in net CO2 uptake between the soils. The partitioning of Ca and Fe either resulted from the stress responses, or was itself a stress response. L pilosus and some Egyptian genotypes differed in soluble Ca concentrations compared with the intolerant cultivars, although no significant difference was apparent in the Ca partitioning of the Egyptian genotype Giza 1. In a limed soil, Giza 1 maintained its stem Fe3+ concentration at a level comparable with that of plants grown in non-limed soil, whereas stem [Fe3+] of an intolerant genotype increased. Gizal increased the percentage of plant Fe that was Fe2+ in its leaf tissue under these conditions; that of the intolerant genotype was reduced. The potential tolerance of the Egyptian genotypes through these mechanisms and the possibility of nutritional-based screens are discussed.

Seed yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is important in determining the effective distribution of new cultivars to farmers. Many genetic and environmental factors affect seed yield. This study was conducted to explain seed yield variation induced by either environmental conditions or cultivars. We analyzed seed yield, aboveground phytomass, harvest index, and seed yield components for a set of 12 cultivars at four locations across France in each of three years. Each location x year combination was considered an environment. Seed weight, number of pods per inflorescence, number of seeds per pod, and mean seed weight were measured. Mean seed yield was 801 kg ha(-1). Large variation in seed yield was found among cultivars and environments. The cultivar x environment interaction was significant. Among environments, seed yield was highly correlated with aboveground phytomass at harvest (r = 0.94) as the lowest seed yields were obtained in the seeding year. The cultivars most adapted to grazing showed the lowest seed yields. Seed yield was genetically correlated with lodging resistance (r = -0.89) and harvest index (r = 0.99). The mean harvest index was 12.7%. The seed weight per inflorescence showed a high broad-sense heritability (0.58) and a high genetic correlation with seed yield (r = 0.91) and with harvest index (r = 0.96). Variation in seed weight per inflorescence was associated with variation in the number of seeds per pod and number of pods per inflorescence. Seed weight per inflorescence appears to have a strong genetic association with seed yield in alfalfa. Environments with high aboveground phytomass potential also have high seed yield potential.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intermittent calcitonin on femoral bone quality in adult ewes from the time of ovariectomy. Six months after the start of the experiment, bone density measurements and mechanical testing (torsion and resonant frequency analysis of the diaphysis and compression of an excised trabecular bone cylinder from the femoral neck) were performed in sham-control and ovariectomized (OVX) ewes treated with placebo or salmon calcitonin (50 or 100 units, 3 times/week). Crystallinity of bone was evaluated by measuring X-ray diffraction line broadening. After OVX, a nonsignificant bone loss was found at all measured sites in the femur (-3 to -9%) together with a decreased biomechanical competence in the trabecular bone (compressive strain -28%, P < 0.05). Treatment with salmon calcitonin, 50 or 100 IU subcutaneously three times a week from the time of ovariectomy, resulted in a significant dose-dependent preservation of bone strength in the trabecular bone of the femoral neck compared with OVX. No adverse effects of calcitonin were observed on bone crystal composition as assessed by diffractiometry. We conclude that in adult ewes intermittent calcitonin treatment from the time of OVX was associated with a significant preservation of cancellous bone strength and strain in trabecular bone of the femoral neck, without affecting crystalline properties of bone.
