Continuous-wave photoinjectors operating at high accelerating gradients promise to revolutionize many areas of science and applications. They can establish the basis for a new generation of monochromatic x-ray free electron lasers, high-brightness hadron beams, or a new generation of microchip production. In this Letter we report on the record-performing superconducting rf electron gun with CsK_{2}Sb photocathode. The gun is generating high charge electron bunches (up to 10 nC/bunch) and low transverse emittances, while operating for months with a single photocathode. This achievement opens a new era in generating high-power beams with a very high average brightness.

Crab crossing is essential for high-luminosity colliders. The high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will equip one of its interaction points (IP1) with double-quarter wave (DQW) crab cavities. A DQW cavity is a new generation of deflecting rf cavities that stands out for its compactness and broad frequency separation between fundamental and first high-order modes. The deflecting kick is provided by its fundamental mode. Each HL-LHC DQW cavity shall provide a nominal deflecting voltage of 3.4 MV, although up to 5.0 MV may be required. A proof-of-principle (POP) DQW cavity was limited by quench at 4.6 MV. This paper describes a new, highly optimized cavity, designated the DQW SPS series, which satisfies dimensional, cryogenic, manufacturing, and impedance requirements for beam tests at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and operation in the LHC. Two prototypes of this DQW SPS series were fabricated by U.S. industry and cold tested after following a conventional superconducting radio-frequency surface treatment. Both units outperformed the POP cavity, reaching a deflecting voltage of 5.3–5.9 MV. This voltage—the highest reached by a DQW cavity—is well beyond the nominal voltage of 3.4 MV and may even operate at the ultimate voltage of 5.0 MV with a sufficient margin. This paper covers fabrication, surface preparation, and cryogenic rf test results and implications. Crab crossing is essential for high-luminosity colliders. Photonuclear reactions with bremsstrahlung photon beams from electron linacs can generate radioisotopes of critical interest. An SRF Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) provides a path to a more diverse and reliable domestic supply of short-lived, high-value, high-demand isotopes in a more compact footprint and at a lower cost than those produced by conventional reactor or ion accelerator methods. Use of an ERL enables increased energy efficiency of the complex through energy recovery of the waste electron beam, high electron currents for high production yields, and reduced neutron production and shielding activation at beam dump components. Simulation studies using G4Beamline/GEANT4 and MCNP6 through MuSim, as well as other simulation codes, will design an ERL-based isotope production facility utilizing bremsstrahlung photon beams from an electron linac. Balancing the isotope production parameters versus energy recovery requirements will inform a choice of isotope production target for future experiments.

High-bunch-charge photoemission electron-sources operating in a continuous wave (CW) mode are required for many advanced applications of particle accelerators, such as electron coolers for hadron beams, electron-ion colliders, and free-electron lasers (FELs). Superconducting RF (SRF) has several advantages over other electron-gun technologies in CW mode as it offers higher acceleration rate and potentially can generate higher bunch charges and average beam currents. A 112 MHz SRF electron photoinjector (gun) was developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) to produce high-brightness and high-bunch-charge bunches for the Coherent electron Cooling Proof-of-Principle (CeC PoP) experiment. The gun utilizes a quarter-wave resonator (QWR) geometry for assuring beam dynamics, and uses high quantum efficiency (QE) multi-alkali photocathodes for generating electrons.

We present a study of higher order mode (HOM) damping in the first multicell superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavity with a photonic band gap (PBG) coupler cell. Achieving higher average beam currents is particularly desirable for future light sources and particle colliders based on SRF energy-recovery linacs (ERLs). Beam current in ERLs is limited by the beam breakup instability, caused by parasitic HOMs interacting with the beam in accelerating cavities. A PBG cell incorporated in an accelerating cavity can reduce the negative effect of HOMs by providing a frequency selective damping mechanism, thus allowing significantly higher beam currents. The five-cell cavity with a PBG cell was designed and optimized for HOM damping. Monopole and dipole HOMs were simulated. The SRF cavity was fabricated and tuned. We present results from cryogenic tests of the multi-cell superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity with a photonic band gap (PBG) coupler cell. Achieving high average beam currents is particularly desirable for future light sources and particle colliders based on SRF energy-recovery-linacs (ERLs). Beam current in ERLs is limited by the beam break-up instability, caused by parasitic higher order modes (HOMs) interacting with the beam in accelerating cavities. A PBG cell incorporated in an accelerating cavity can reduce the negative effect of HOMs by providing a frequency selective damping mechanism, thus allowing significantly higher beam currents. The multi-cell cavity was designed and fabricated of niobium. Two cryogenic (vertical) tests were conducted. The high unloaded Q-factor was demonstrated at a temperature of 4.2 K at accelerating gradients up to 3 MV/m. The measured value of the unloaded Q-factor was 1.55 × 108, in agreement with prediction.

We report the results of the recent high power testing of superconducting radio frequency photonic band gap (PBG) accelerator cells. Tests of the two single-cell 2.1 GHz cavities were performed at both 4 and 2 K. An accelerating gradient of 15 MV/m and an unloaded quality factor Q(0) of 4×10(9) were achieved. It has been long realized that PBG structures have great potential in reducing long-range wakefields in accelerators. A PBG structure confines the fundamental TM(01)-like accelerating mode, but does not support higher order modes. Employing PBG cavities to filter out higher order modes in superconducting particle accelerators will allow suppression of dangerous beam instabilities caused by wakefields and thus operation at higher frequencies and significantly higher beam luminosities. This may lead towards a completely new generation of colliders for high energy physics and energy recovery linacs for the free-electron lasers.

All previous guns of this type have employed elliptical cavities, but there are potential advantages associated with other geometries. Here we describe the design, commissioning, and initial results from a superconducting radio-frequency electron gun employing a quarter-wave resonator configuration, the first such device to be built and tested. In initial operation, the gun has generated beams with bunch charge is excess in 78 pC, energy of 469 keV, and normalized rms emittances of about 4.9 um. Currently, bunch charge is limited by the available drive laser energy, and beam energy is limited by x-ray production and the available rf power. No fundamental limits on beam charge or energy have been encountered, and no high-field quenching events have been observed. The photoinjector test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ), was built to develop and optimize photoelectron sources for superconducting linacs for high-brilliance, short-wavelength free-electron laser (FEL) applications like the free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH) and the European x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). In this paper, the detailed characterization of two laser-driven rf guns with different operating conditions is described. One experimental optimization of the beam parameters was performed at an accelerating gradient of about 43 MV/m at the photocathode and the other at about 60 MV/m. In both cases, electron beams with very high phase-space density have been demonstrated at a bunch charge of 1 nC and are compared with corresponding simulations. The rf gun optimized for the lower gradient has surpassed all the FLASH requirements on beam quality and rf parameters (gradient, rf pulse length, repetition rate) and serves as a spare gun for this facility. The rf gun studied with increased accelerating gradient at the cathode produced beams with even higher brightness, yielding the first demonstration of the beam quality required for driving the European XFEL: The geometric mean of the normalized projected rms emittance in the two transverse directions was measured to be 1.26±0.13 mm mrad for a 1-nC electron bunch. When a 10% charge cut is applied excluding electrons from those phase-space regions where the measured phase-space density is below a certain level and which are not expected to contribute to the lasing process, the normalized projected rms emittance is about 0.9 mm mrad.

The Photo-Injector Test Facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ) is an electron accelerator which was built to develop and optimize high brightness electron sources suitable for SASE FEL operation. Currently, in parallel to the operation of the existing setup, a large extension of the facility and its research program is ongoing. The beam line which has a present length of about 13 meters will be extended up to about 21 meters within the next year. Many additional diagnostics components will be added to the present layout. Two high-energy dispersive arms, an RF deflecting cavity and a phase space tomography module will extend the existing diagnostic system of the photo injector and will contribute to the full characterization of new electron sources. We report on the latest developments of the beam diagnostics at PITZ.

Smith-Purcell (SP) radiation is emitted when an electron passes close to the surface of a metallic grating. The radiation becomes coherent (fluence proportional to the square of the number of electrons) when the electrons are in bunches whose dimensions are smaller than the wavelength of the radiation. This has been observed in experiments in which the electrons are prebunched by an rf linac. The enhancement of the spectral intensity is accompanied by large changes in the angular and spectral distribution of the radiation when the electrons appear in periodic bunches. This is called superradiance. Recently, superradiant SP radiation has been observed from a so-called Smith-Purcell free-electron laser (SP-FEL) in which the electrons are bunched by the lasing process. As in other slow-wave structures, the electron beam in a SP-FEL interacts with an evanescent wave for which the phase velocity matches the electron velocity and amplifies it. The frequency of this wave lies below the range of SP radiation and the wave is not radiated except from the ends of the grating. However, the bunching of the electrons by the interaction with the evanescent wave enhances the ordinary Smith-Purcell radiation and changes the angular and spectral distribution due to superradiant effects. In this article, we introduce a new method for computing the SP radiation in three dimensions, including the effects of finite grating length and superradiance due to periodic electron bunching at an arbitrary frequency. We show that the SP radiation develops spectrally and angularly narrow peaks at the harmonics of the bunching frequency. In rf linacs, where the bunches are widely spaced, several closely spaced harmonics lie under the spectral envelope of the emission from a single electron. In a SP-FEL the harmonics are widely spaced and the SP radiation appears in narrow cones at the SP angles corresponding to the harmonics of the bunching frequency. Finally, we calculate the angular spectral fluence radiated by an electron passing over a lamellar grating of finite length, examine its coherent enhancement in SP-FELs and rf linacs, and compare the results with numerical simulations and available experimental data.

It has previously been shown that the electron beam in a Smith-Purcell free-electron laser interacts with a synchronous evanescent wave. At high electron energy, the group velocity of this wave is positive and the device operates on a convective instability, in the manner of a traveling-wave tube. For operation as an oscillator, the gain must exceed the losses in the external feedback system. At low electron energy, the group velocity of the synchronous evanescent wave is negative and the device operates on an absolute instability, like a backward-wave oscillator, and no external feedback is required. For oscillation to occur, the current must exceed the so-called start current. At an intermediate energy, called the Bragg condition, the group velocity ${v}_{g}$ of the evanescent wave vanishes and both the gain and the attenuation due to resistive losses in the grating diverge. It is shown that near the Bragg condition the gain depends on ${v}_{g}^{\ensuremath{-}1/3}$, while the attenuation depends on ${v}_{g}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Since the attenuation increases faster than the gain near the Bragg condition, the Smith-Purcell free-electron laser cannot operate at the point of maximum gain. The effects of resistive losses become increasingly important as Smith-Purcell free-electron lasers move to shorter wavelengths.

We report results from recent 2.1 GHz superconducting radio frequency (SRF) photonic band gap (PBG) resonator experiments at Los Alamos. Two 2.1 GHz PBG cells with elliptical rods were fabricated and tested at high power in a liquid helium bath at the temperatures of 4 K and below 2 K. The described SRF PBG cells were designed with a particular emphasis on changing the shape of the PBG rods to reduce peak surface magnetic fields and at the same time to preserve its effectiveness at damping higher-order-modes. The superconducting PBG cavities have great potential for damping long-range wakefields in SRF accelerator structures without affecting the fundamental accelerating mode. The cells performed in accordance with simulation's predictions and the maximum achieved accelerating gradient was 18.3 MV/m. This represents a 30% increase over gradients previously demonstrated in superconducting PBG cavities with round rods.

We have included the effects of losses in the grating surface and reflections at the ends of the grating in the theory of Smith-Purcell free-electron lasers. Computations show that losses typically increase the start current by about 10%. The complex reflection coefficient for the evanescent wave is computed using numerical simulations, and is found to have a magnitude on the order of 30%. This typically increases or decreases the start current by about 10%, depending on the phase of the round-trip reflection.
