Contrast-enhanced breast imaging has gained increasing importance in the diagnosis and management of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to assess breast cancer enhancement after contrast administration on prone multidetector computed tomography (MDCT).This retrospective, unicentric, institutional review board-approved study included patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer who were submitted to contrast-enhanced MDCT in prone position, with image acquisition before and after nonionic iodinated contrast administration.Sixty breast cancer patients aged between 31 and 74 years (mean, 49 years) were included. Most patients (n = 50, 83.3%) had no special type invasive breast carcinoma and luminal subtype (n = 45, 75%). All index breast tumors were identified on prone MDCT. Forty-three cases (70.5%) presented as mass, 13 (21.3%) as nonmass enhancement and 4 (6.6%) as both mass and nonmass enhancement. Mean tumor density was 37.8 HU and 87.9 HU on precontrast and postcontrast images, respectively. Mean contrast enhancement was 50.2 HU (range, 20-109 HU). There were no statistically significant differences in tumor enhancement according to histological type, molecular subtype, nuclear grade, tumor size, or imaging presentation.Our results show that breast cancer usually can be identified and have significant contrast enhancement on prone MDCT images. This method could be used as an alternative when other contrast-enhanced breast imaging methods are not available.

Safe drinking water' supply is an essential service and depends directly on the water treatment that produces water treatment sludge (WTS) as a product, whose final destination varies and remains a challenge. The ecotoxicity assessment of the WTS address the ecological implications of the WTS disposal but these information is still scarce in the literature. In this sense, we did a systematic review of the ecotoxicological studies on WTS using databases from six platforms. From the 785 papers recovered; 16 studies were eligible and showed the ecotoxicity assays' applicability to evaluate the WTS. We discussed WTS ecotoxicity considering sample characterization; terrestrial and aquatic toxicity assays; and WTS challenges. WTS proved to be a highly heterogeneous matrix composed mainly of coagulant precipitates, including Al and Fe. Studies lack consensus concerning the most representative/sensitive species for evaluating WTS' toxicity. Crustaceans were the most studied aquatic group, although algae species were more sensitive. Besides, soil ecotoxicity assessed only plant growth, and a single study used the earthworm. Even papers used bioassays to indicate the recycling WTS' feasibility, there is a lack of specific legislation regarding the WTS reuse. Furthermore, are necessary a regulation for WTS management that involves an ecological risk assessment.

El manejo de los pacientes que presentan un accidente vascular isquémico ha evolucionado en los últimos años. Varios estudios abrieron la posibilidad para el tratamiento endovascular de estos pacientes, mejorando sus resultados funcionales. El manejo anestésico basado en evidencia a cambiado gracias a nueva literatura relevante. En este artículo queremos describir brevemente los cambios en el estado del arte según la nueva evidencia clínica.

Introduction: The most common extramuscular manifestation of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) is interstitial lung disease (ILD) and the diagnosis is based on serum autoantibodies. The new specific and associated antibodies to IIM have helped to identify new clinical entities in the spectrum of IIM. The objective of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic contribution of a myositis antibodies panel (MP) in a cohort of Chilean patients with ILD without a definitive connective tissue disease (CTD). Materials and Methods: Starting on January 2017 we performed a MP to 111 consecutive patients with ILD and suspected CTD but without a definitive diagnosis through another diagnostic tools in the Lung-Rheumatological Program at the “Instituto Nacional del Torax”, Santiago, Chile. The clinical and serological baseline characteristics of the patients that were most frequently associated with the probability of having a positive panel were compared. Results: The MP was positive in 56 of 111 patients. Anti synthetase syndrome (ASS) was the most prevalent diagnosis. The most frequent antibodies were Ro-52, PM/Scl-75 and Ku. The most frequent variables in the positive MP group were the presence of Raynaud’s phenomenon, myositis, mechanic’s hands, positive Ro and La antibodies and the presence of combined pattern of nonspecific interstitial pneumonia and organizing pneumonia in chest computed tomography scan. Conclusions: The incorporation of the MP has helped us to improve our diagnostic precision of patients with CTD/ILD. We present clinical and serological elements that refine the performance of the test.

The effects of toxic substance in soil matrices are evaluated by assessing adult worm survival and reproduction. Throughout the test, hundreds of juvenile potworms can be found. The current method for Enchytraeus crypticus quantification in soil samples is a laborious and time-consuming procedure that involves manual counting. The present work proposes a method for quick and reliable counting of E. crypticus by using an automated image analysis algorithm applied to soil images. Comparisons between automated and manual methods conducted in double-blind trials involving a large, routine batch of tropical artificial soil samples revealed no statistically significant differences for a wide range of worm densities. The proposed method overcomes time-consuming counts in manual methods and is suited to be deployed routinely for soil toxicity studies involving large batches of samples.

The renormalization of quantum field theories usually assumes Lorentz and gauge symmetries, besides the general restrictions imposed by unitarity and causality. However, the set of renormalizable theories can be enlarged by relaxing some of these assumptions. In this work, we consider the particular case of a CPT-preserving but Lorentz-breaking extension of scalar QED. For this theory, we calculate the one-loop radiative corrections to the three- and four-point scalar-vector vertex functions, at the lowest order in the Lorentz violation parameters; and we explicitly verify that the resulting low-energy effective action is compatible with the usual gauge invariance requirements. Prior to the publication of the 2002 ATS / ERS classification of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIP), the histopathological evaluation was considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases (ILD). However, several subsequent studies showed that interobserver concordances between expert lung pathologists were surprisingly poor, since histopathological appearances may overlap between different entities. Therefore, a new diagnostic system that serves as a gold standard in patients with ILD became necessary. This is how the concept of multidisciplinary discussion was born, to refer to a meeting that allows the integration of all the clinical, radiological and pathological data available for an individual patient and thus be able to determine a working diagnosis.

SummaryMolecular mechanisms that regulate tumour-associated macrophage (TAM) phenotype and function are incompletely understood. Here, we show that the pseudokinase TRIB1 is highly expressed by TAMs in breast cancer and that its expression correlates with response to chemotherapy and patient survival. We used immune-competent murine models of breast cancer to characterise the consequences of altered (reduced or elevated) myeloid Trib1 expression on tumour growth and composition of stromal immune cells. We found that both overexpression and knockout of myeloid Trib1 promote tumour growth, albeit through distinct molecular mechanisms. Myeloid Trib1 deficiency resulted in an early accelearation of tumour growth, paired with a selective reduction in perivascular macrophage numbers in vivo and enhanced oncogenic cytokine expression in vitro. In contrast, elevated levels of Trib1 in myeloid cells led to an increase in mammary tumour volume at late stages, together with a reduction of NOS2 expressing macrophages and an overall reduction of these cells in hypoxic tumour regions. In addition, we show that myeloid Trib1 is a previously unknown, negative regulator of the anti-tumour cytokine IL-15 and that increased expression of myeloid Trib1 leads to reduced IL-15 levels in mammary tumours, with a consequent reduction in the number of T-cells, that are key to anti-tumour immune responses.Together, these results define the different roles of TRIB1 in human breast cancer and provide a mechanistic understanding for the importance of myeloid TRIB1 expression levels in the development of this disease.SignificanceTRIB1 expression is strongly associated with response to chemotherapy in breast cancer patients with aggressive tumours. This protein is also highly expressed by tumour-associated macrophages. Thus, we used myeloid-specific alterations of Trib1 expression in mice (Trib1mKO and Trib1mTg), and characterised consequent changes in the growth rate and tumour microenvironment of mammary tumours. Both Trib1mKO and Trib1mTg enhanced tumour growth, but at different stages of tumour growth and via distinct mechanisms. Trib1mKO significantly increased the expression of oncogenic cytokines, such as IL6, IL10, CCL20, PD-L1, and VEGF. In contrast, Trib1mTg accelerated at the later stage of tumour growth via inhibition of hypoxic TAMs in the TME, as well as by reduced IL-15 expression thus leading to impaired naïve and cytotoxic T cell infiltration. These data define TRIB1 as a potential novel marker of therapeutic responses in breast cancer, as well as a key mechanistic regulator of the anti-tumour cytokine, IL-15 in myeloid cells.

We reassess an alternative CPT-odd electrodynamics obtained from a Palatini-like procedure. Starting from a more general situation, we analyze the physical consistency of the model for different values of the parameter introduced in the mass tensor. We show that there is a residual gauge invariance in the model if the local transformation is taken to vary only in the direction of the Lorentz-breaking vector. This residual gauge invariance can be extended to all models whose only source of gauge symmetry breaking is such a mass term.

Resumen Introducción: La manifestación extramuscular de las miopatías inflamatorias idiopáticas (MII) es la enfermedad pulmonar intersticial (EPI) y el diagnóstico se basa en autoanticuerpos séricos. Los nuevos anticuerpos específicos y asociados a MII han ayudado a identificar nuevas entidades clínicas en el espectro de MII. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la contribución diagnóstica de un panel de anticuerpos de miositis (PM) en una cohorte de pacientes chilenos con EPI sin una enfermedad del tejido conectivo (ETC) definitiva. Materiales y Métodos: A partir de enero de 2017 se realizó un panel de miositis a 111 pacientes consecutivos con EPI y sospecha de ETC, pero sin un diagnóstico definitivo a través de otra herramienta diagnóstica, en el programa de Pulmón-Reumatológico del Instituto Nacional del Tórax, Santiago, Chile. Se compararon las características basales clínicas y serológicas de los pacientes que se asociaban más frecuentemente a la probabilidad de tener un panel positivo. Resultados: El PM fue positivo en 56 de 111 pacientes. El síndrome antisintetasa (SAS) fue el diagnóstico más frecuente. Los anticuerpos más frecuentes fueron Ro-52, PM / Scl-75 y Ku. Las variables más frecuentes en el grupo PM(+) fueron la presencia del Raynaud, miositis, manos de mecánico, los anticuerpos Ro y La positivos, la presencia de un patrón combinado de neumonía intersticial inespecífica y neumonía organizada en la tomografía computarizada de tórax. Conclusiones: la incorporación del PM nos ha ayudado a mejorar nuestra precisión diagnóstica en pacientes con EPI / ETC. Presentamos elementos clínicos y serológicos que perfeccionan el rendimiento de la prueba.

We calculate contributions to the one-loop renormalization in the spinor sector of the minimal Lorentz-violating extended QED in the second order in Lorentz-breaking parameters. From the renormalizability viewpoint, we show that the inclusion of some of the Lorentz-breaking terms in the model is linked to the presence of others. We also demonstrate that the Ward identities are satisfied up to this order.
