Departamento de Medio Ambiente y Agronomía​, Restoration of degraded drylands is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, reverse desertification and secure livelihoods for the two billion people who live in these areas. Bold global targets have been set for dryland restoration to restore millions of hectares of degraded land. These targets have been questioned as overly ambitious, but without a global evaluation of successes and failures it is impossible to gauge feasibility. Here we examine restoration seeding outcomes across 174 sites on six continents, encompassing 594,065 observations of 671 plant species. Our findings suggest reasons for optimism. Seeding had a positive impact on species presence: in almost a third of all treatments, 100% of species seeded were growing at first monitoring. However, dryland restoration is risky: 17% of projects failed, with no establishment of any seeded species, and consistent declines were found in seeded species as projects matured. Across projects, higher seeding rates and larger seed sizes resulted in a greater probability of recruitment, with further influences on species success including site aridity, taxonomic identity and species life form. Our findings suggest that investigations examining these predictive factors will yield more effective and informed restoration decision-making., We would like to thank the supporters of the Global Arid Zone Project. Demand for restoration of resilient, self‐sustaining, and biodiverse natural ecosystems as a conservation measure is increasing globally; however, restoration efforts frequently fail to meet standards appropriate for this objective. Achieving these standards requires management underpinned by input from diverse scientific disciplines including ecology, biotechnology, engineering, soil science, ecophysiology, and genetics. Despite increasing restoration research activity, a gap between the immediate needs of restoration practitioners and the outputs of restoration science often limits the effectiveness of restoration programs. Regrettably, studies often fail to identify the practical issues most critical for restoration success. We propose that part of this oversight may result from the absence of a considered statement of the necessary practical restoration science questions. Here we develop a comprehensive framework of the research required to bridge this gap and guide effective restoration. We structure questions in five themes: (1) setting targets and planning for success, (2) sourcing biological material, (3) optimizing establishment, (4) facilitating growth and survival, and (5) restoring resilience, sustainability, and landscape integration. This framework will assist restoration practitioners and scientists to identify knowledge gaps and develop strategic research focused on applied outcomes. The breadth of questions highlights the importance of cross‐discipline collaboration among restoration scientists, and while the program is broad, successful restoration projects have typically invested in many or most of these themes. Researchers and practitioners of ecological restoration from South Africa and Western Australia recently undertook a travelling workshop across several South African biomes to discuss and evaluate the various approaches currently being utilised in the field. Key findings from the workshop highlighted the contrasting nature of ecological restoration undertaken in these two ecologically similar, but socially and politically different regions.

An important characteristic of many wetland plants in semi-arid regions is their capacity to withstand fluctuations between extended dry phases and floods. However, anthropogenic river regulation can reduce natural flow variability in riverine wetlands, causing a decline in the frequency and duration of deep flooding as well as extended droughts, and an increase in shallow flooding and soil saturation. Our aim in this paper was to use an experimental approach to examine whether reductions in flooding and drought disadvantage species adapted to both these extremes, and favours those with water requirements that match the new regime of frequent low-level flooding. We compared the growth characteristics and biomass allocation of three native Australian aquatic macrophytes (Pseudoraphis spinescens, Juncus ingens and Typha domingensis), which co-occur at Barmah Forest, south-eastern Australia, under three water treatments: drought, soil saturation and deep flooding. The responses of species to the treatments largely reflected changes in their relative abundance at Barmah Forest since river regulation. Typha domingensis, which has remained uncommon, performed relatively poorly in all treatments, while J. ingens, which has increased its range, exhibited more vigorous growth under soil saturation. Pseudoraphis spinescens, which was once widespread but has declined markedly in its distribution, grew strongly under all water treatments. These findings suggest that a return to more natural, variable river flow regimes can potentially be an important conservation and restoration strategy in ecosystems characterised by species that have adaptations to extreme hydrological growing conditions.

Topsoil replacement is a standard procedure in restoration of mined landscapes as it provides a source of propagules via the soil seed bank, as well as provides favourable physical, chemical and microbiological properties for plant establishment. With the availability of topsoil frequently limited in mining, soil cover designs that maximise the use of this resource across the newly-created surfaces after mining should be considered. In this paper, we examine the use of different soil covers and their influence on seedling recruitment for restoration of a Threatened Ecological Community (TEC) with limited topsoil. The properties of a standard topsoil and topsoil diluted with waste-rock to optimise spread were compared between two topsoil sources with different textures and a fine-textured waste material that is a mining by-product. We studied the physicochemical and hydrological traits of five soil covers (unblended TEC topsoil; TEC topsoil mixed with waste rock; fines; fines mixed with waste rock, and waste rock) with two TEC topsoil sources (plateau and hillslope). Soil characterisation included texture, gravel content, soil surface crust strength, soil moisture and temperature, and surface infiltration. Finally, we quantified seedling emergence for four key taxa sown (Acacia acuminata, Allocasuarina acutivalvis Melaleuca nematophylla, Waitzia nitida) and the seedling community arising from the topsoil seedbank and naturally dispersed seeds, and related this emergence with the soil properties. The standard topsoil cover promoted the greatest seedling emergence showing marked differences between the two topsoil provenances. Importantly, the addition of waste rock to topsoil did not compromise the ability of topsoil to support seedling emergence and is therefore a useful strategy to maximise this resource. Overall, our results show the importance of hydrological properties of soil covers for seedling recruitment and highlight the importance of topsoil selection in restoration success.

Planting multiple species in wetland restoration sites could potentially accelerate ecological succession while enhancing ecological services. Our study of thick-mat floating marsh demonstrated that two species performed better than monocultures for developing a more structurally sound root mat. Although Panicum hemitomon is the typical dominant and focal species of all restoration efforts of this habitat type, we evaluated the effects of additional species, including Sagittaria lancifolia, a ubiquitous floating marsh constituent, and three laterally growing specialists (Alternanthera philoxeroides, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, and Ludwigia peploides). In a mesocosm experiment, we found greater P. hemitomon biomass in monocultures but greater vegetative cover and total mat biomass with P. hemitomon plus L. peploides, but not greater biomass in the most species-rich treatment or treatment with the greatest initial planting density. We conclude that L. peploides aids restoration of thick-mat floating marsh by increasing mat buoyancy, enhancing lateral growth, and providing greater root mat structural integrity. This type of laterally growing specialist should accelerate coalescence of neighboring constructed and naturally formed mats. Planting species that occupy complementary niches should also minimize competition for key resources.

Wetlands are prone to increased invasion by plant species following changes in hydrologic regime, leading to shifts in plant community composition and potentially ecosystem function and health. In this paper, the ecology and potential control of Juncus ingens, a native wetland plant in the Murray-Darling Basin of south-eastern Australia, is investigated. J. ingens has benefited from altered Murray River hydrologic conditions by expanding its range and invading seasonally-flooded grassland and riparian habitats along the Murray River. Here results of complementary glasshouse and field research of seedling and mature J. ingens growth and resilience as influenced by hydrologic regime (moist, saturated, partial inundation and when possible, complete inundation) and mechanical control (i.e., clipping) are presented. A moist hydrologic regime (soil held at field capacity) resulted in the most vigorous seedlings (13.9–73.0% more total biomass), while saturated conditions (flooding maintained level with the soil surface) resulted in the most vigorous mature J. ingens (14.1–98.4% more total biomass). Seedling mortality was greatest under complete and prolonged inundation (60% fatal with remaining 40% showing severe stress), conditions suspected to have limited prior invasion but which currently occur infrequently as a result of reduced flooding magnitude. Clipping was fatal for nearly all seedlings regardless of hydrologic regime but was only fatal for mature plants if coupled with prolonged inundation. Coupling ground-level clipping with strategic flooding may be the most effective means for controlling current populations of J. ingens and limiting further invasion, promoting re-colonisation by displaced species and rehabilitating the health of Barmah Forest and similar Murray River floodplain wetlands.

This paper attempts to establish linkages between growth by a keystone wetland plant, Panicum hemitomon Schultes, and the independent and interactive effect of nutrient and hydrologic regime to inform management and rehabilitation of thick-mat floating marsh (TMFM). To do so a manipulative glasshouse experiment employing created TMFM similar to that under consideration for field trials and two levels each of N, P and hydrology was conducted. P. hemitomon grew vigorously under saturated (flooding level with the surface of the mat) when compared to inundated (+15 cm flooding) hydrologic conditions, and under enriched (50 g m−2 year−1) when compared to non-enriched (25 g m−2 year−1) N. Further, and as inferred from net CO2 assimilation, shoot biomass and rhizome biomass and length, N-enriched conditions seemed to lessen inundation stress. For all variables the interaction between N and hydrology was non-significant and there was no observable effect of P. We were unable to infer root or mat buoyancy from root specific gravity measurements but it was evident at harvest that saturation or minimal flooding is required for vigorous root and rhizome growth. This study provides insight to the notion that decreased mat buoyancy (and increased flooding level) resulting from sediment deposition associated with Mississippi River diversions could adversely affect TMFM sustainability, but more clearly demonstrates the need to maintain saturated hydrologic conditions for achieving the type of root and rhizome growth we feel is required for TMFM rehabilitation.
