The primary physics program uses the Drell–Yan process to probe antiquark distributions in the target nucleon. The spectrometer consists of a target system, two dipole magnets and four detector stations. The upstream magnet is a closed-aperture solid iron magnet which also serves as the beam dump, while the second magnet is an open aperture magnet. Each of the detector stations consists of scintillator hodoscopes and a high-resolution tracking device. The FPGA-based trigger compares the hodoscope signals to a set of pre-programmed roads to determine if the event contains oppositely-signed, high-mass muon pairs.

Abstract: We report a new measurement of the decay Ω − → Ξ − π + π − with 76 events and a first observation of the decay Ω ¯ + → Ξ ¯ + π + π − with 24 events, yielding a combined branching ratio ( 3.74 − 0.56 + 0.67 ) × 10 − 4 . This represents a factor 25 increase in statistics over the best previous measurement. No evidence is seen for CP violation, with B ( Ω − → Ξ − π + π − ) = 4.04 − 0.71 + 0.83 × 10 − 4 and B ( Ω ¯ + → Ξ ¯ + π + π − ) = 3.15 − 0.89 + 1.12 × 10 − 4 . Contrary to theoretical expectation, we see little evidence for the decays Ω − → Ξ 1530 ∗ 0 π − and Ω ¯ + → Ξ ¯ 1530 ∗ 0 π + and place a 90% C.L. upper limit on the combined branching ratio B ( Ω − ( Ω ¯ + ) → Ξ 1530 ∗ 0 ( Ξ ¯ 1530 ∗ 0 ) π ∓ ) 7.0 × 10 − 5 .

Abstract: This paper describes the final incarnation of the Fermilab High Intensity Lab spectrometer which operated for ten years in the Proton West Area of Fermilab in the execution of two experiments (E537 and E705) which studied hadroproduction of high mass dimuon pairs. The version of the spectrometer used in E771 differed from earlier versions of the spectrometer by the addition of a silicon microstrip detector, pad chambers and resistive plate counters. These additions were implemented to give the spectrometer the capability of detection of secondary decay vertices from B --> mu or B --> J/psi --> mu mu decays. As discussed, the spectrometer in a short data taking period was able to address many kinds of physics, other than beauty decays.

Abstract: The α decay parameter in the process Ω − → Λ K − has been measured from a sample of 4.50 million unpolarized Ω − decays recorded by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab and found to be [ 1.78 ± 0.19 ( stat ) ± 0.16 ( syst ) ] × 10 −2 . This is the first unambiguous evidence for a nonzero α decay parameter, and hence parity violation, in the Ω − → Λ K − decay.

Abstract: The HyperCP experiment (Fermilab E871) was designed to search for rare phenomena in the decays of charged strange particles, in particular CP violation in $\Xi$ and $\Lambda$ hyperon decays with a sensitivity of $10^{-4}$. Intense charged secondary beams were produced by 800 GeV/c protons and momentum-selected by a magnetic channel. Decay products were detected in a large-acceptance, high-rate magnetic spectrometer using multiwire proportional chambers, trigger hodoscopes, a hadronic calorimeter, and a muon-detection system. Nearly identical acceptances and efficiencies for hyperons and antihyperons decaying within an evacuated volume were achieved by reversing the polarities of the channel and spectrometer magnets. Abstract: Direct CP violation in nonleptonic hyperon decays can be established by comparing the decays of hyperons and anti-hyperons. For Ξ decay to Λπ followed by Λ to pπ, the proton distribution in the rest frame of Lambda is governed by the product of the decay parameters αΞαΛ. The asymmetry ΛΞΛ, proportional to the difference of αΞαΛ of the hyperon and anti-hyperon decays, vanishes if CP is conserved. We report on an analysis of a fraction of 1997 and 1999 data collected by the HyperCP (E871) collaboration during the fixed-target runs at Fermilab. The preliminary measurement of the assymmetry is AΞΛ = [−7±12(stat)±6.2(sys)] × 10−4, an order of magnitude better than the present limit.

Abstract: The Fermilab HyperCP experiment has accumulated the world's largest sample of Ξ− and Ξ + hyperon decays within two running periods in 1997 and 1999. The primary goal of the experiment is to search for direct CP violation in the decay sequences Ξ− → Λ π− → p π− π− and Ξ + → Λ π+ → p π+ π+. A violation of CP would manifest itself as a difference between the angular distribution of the proton and the antiproton in the Λ and Λ helicity frame. The amount of data is enough to reach a statistical sensitivity of 1.4 × 10−4 in the CP violating asymmetry A ΞΛ = (αΞ αΛ − α Ξ α Λ )/(αΞ αΛ + α Ξ α Λ ). We present an analysis method used to take into account the slight differences in the production of the Ξ− and Ξ + samples. A preliminary results on A ΞΛ at the level of a few 10−3 and based on a few percent of the 1997 data will be presented.

Abstract: A sensitive search for direct CP violation in Ξ− (Ξ+) and Λ (Λ) decays is underway at FNAL. Experiment E871 (HyperCP) intends to perform a precision measurement of the angular distribution of protons (anti-protons) with respect to the helicity axis in the rest frame of the Λ (Λ). The slopes of these distributions give the decay parameters αΞαΛ and αΞαΛ. An asymmetry parameter A in terms of these decay parameters has been defined for which a non-zero value would be unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation. Theoretical predictions for A range from no asymmetry up to ∼ 10−3. HyperCP expects to measure A with an uncertainty of ∼ 2 × 10−4.

Abstract: We present the x{sub F} and p{sub T} differential cross sections of J/{psi} and {psi}{sup {prime}}, respectively, in the ranges {minus}0.05{lt}x{sub F}{lt}0.25 and p{sub T}{lt}3.5 GeV/c. The data samples are constituted by about 12000 J/{psi} and 200 {psi}{sup {prime}} produced in proton-silicon interactions at 800 GeV/c and decaying into opposite sign muons. The x{sub F} and p{sub T} distributions are compared with recent results from experiments E789 at the same energy and to leading order QCD predictions using the MRS D0 parametrization for the parton structure function. The measured shapes of the differential cross sections, except for the d{sigma}/dx{sub F} at small x{sub F}, agree very well with the prediction, even though their value is quite a bit larger than the prediction. We also present the cos{theta} differential cross section of the J/{psi} which indicates unpolarized production in contrast with color octet models predictions. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have searched for the flavor changing neutral current decay Do + p-l+p”in the dimuon data obtained by the E771 experiment conducted at Fermilab. No evidence is found. A branching ratio of (-1.0 ‘A:,’ f 0.2) x 10v6 is obtained, corresponding to a 90% confidence level upper limit of 3.3 x 10m6. This new upper limit is about three times more sensitive than the best published limit. (Submitted to Physical Review Letters)

Abstract: We report on the analysis of Charmonium and Bottomium states produced in p-Si interactions at s =38.7 GeV . The data have been collected with the open geometry spectrometer of the E771 Experiment at the FNAL High Intensity Lab. J ψ , ψ′ and γ total cross sections as well as the ratio B(ψ′ → μμ)σ(ψ′) (B( J ψ → μμ)σ( J ψ )) have been measured. Results are compared with theoretical predictions and with results at other energies.

Abstract: The aim of the present work is to investigate the link between two endocrine disruptor compounds (EDCs), which are chemicals that interfere with the hormone system in human and wildlife, and the human immune response through a study of their effects on the THP-1 human cell line which was used as a model for macrophages. We used two EDCs, diisononylphthalate (DiP) and 4-n-nonylphenol (NP) alone or in combination in order to evaluate the effects of these compounds on several parameters of the immune response - cytokine secretion, phagocytosis and the putative implication of the estrogen receptors - by studying the level of MAPK activation. NP and DiP strongly reduced phagocytosis and modify cytokine secretions. Indeed, differentiated THP-1 cell exposures (i) to 5 and 10 microM of combination of NP and DiP induced an IL-8 level in the medium respectively of 28.9 and 45 percent higher than the level obtained for the control (untreated cells), (ii) to combination of NP and DiP at 10 microM induced an increase of IL-1β level in comparison to the control level, (iii) to combination of NP and DiP induced an increase of TNF-α level whatever the concentration of EDCs tested (between 0 and 10 microM). Lastly, differentiated THP-1 cell exposure to NP, DiP alone or in combination (2 microM for each condition) induced a decrease of ERK1/2 phosphorylation in comparison to ERK1/2 phosphorylation level of the control. Moreover, differentiated THP-1 cell treatments by ICI-182780 (an estrogen receptor antagonist) supressed the EDC effects on ERK1/2 phosphorylation level which indicates an estrogen receptor-dependent pathway. These results suggest that EDCs have the ability to alter the human immune function, maybe by interfering with endocrine balance.

Abstract: The asymmetry in the {bar p} angular distribution in the sequential decay {bar {Omega}}{sup +} {yields} {bar {Lambda}}K{sup +} {yields} {bar p}{pi}{sup +}K{sup +} has been measured to be {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}}{bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} = [+1.16{+-}0.18(stat){+-}0.17(syst)]x10{sup -2} using 1.89x10{sup 6} unpolarized {bar {Omega}}{sup +} decays recorded by the Hyper CP (E871) experiment at Fermilab. Using the known value of {alpha}{sub {Lambda}}, and assuming that {bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} = -{alpha}{sub {Lambda}}, {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}} = [-1.81{+-}0.28(stat){+-}0.26(syst)]x10{sup -2}. A comparison between this measurement of {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}}{bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} and recent measurements of {alpha}{sub {Omega}}{alpha}{sub {Lambda}} made by HyperCP shows no evidence of a violation of CP symmetry.

Abstract: The asymmetry in the rho angular distribution in the sequential decay Omega+--LamdaKappa+--rhopi+Kappa+. has been measured to be alphaOmegaalphaLamda=[+1.16+/-0.18(stat)+/-0.17(syst)]x10(-2) using 1.89x10(6) unpolarized Omega+ decays recorded by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab. Using the known value of alphaLamda, and assuming that alphaLamda=-alphaLamda, alphaOmega=[-1.81+/-0.28(stat)+/-0.26(syst)]x10(-2). A comparison between this measurement of alphaOmegaalphaLamda and recent measurements of alphaOmegaalphaLamda made by HyperCP shows no evidence of a violation of CP symmetry.

Abstract: We have measured the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ parameter of the ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decay using data collected with the HyperCP spectrometer during the 1997 fixed-target run at Fermilab. Analyzing a sample of $0.96\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decays, we obtain ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\Omega}}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}=[1.33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.33(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.52(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})]\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$. With the accepted value of ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$, ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$ is found to be $[2.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.51(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.81(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})]\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$.

Abstract: We report the first evidence for the decay ∑+ → pμ+ μ- from data taken by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab. Based on three observed events, the branching ratio is B(∑+ → pμ+ μ-) = [8.6 -5.4 +6.6(stat) ± 5.5(syst)] × 10 -8. The narrow range of dimuon masses may indicate that the decay proceeds via a neutral intermediate state, ∑+ rarr; pp0, p0 → μ+ μ- with a P0 mass of 214.3 ± 0.5 MeV/c 2 and branching ratio B(∑+ rarr; pp 0, p0 → μ+ μ-) = [3.1-1.9 -2.4(stat) ± 1.5(syst)] × 10 -8. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The novel sources of CP violation observed in charged χ and λ hyperon decays were investigated. A comparison of the p and p angular distributions in the hyperon decays was made using a subset of the data from the HyperCP experiment (E871) at Fermilab. A possible source of bias was found to be a momentum-dependent differential loss of events due to interactions of the χ- and χ+ decay products. The obtained result was observed to be stable with respect to time, χ momentum, and secondary-beam intensity, The results show that differences between the χ- and χ+ production angles could cause a bias due to production polarization differences.

Abstract: A sensitive search for the lepton-number-violating decay Xi(-)--pmu(-)mu(-) has been performed using a sample of approximately 10(9) Xi(-) hyperons produced in 800 GeV/c p-Cu collisions. We obtain B(Xi(-)--pmu(-)mu(-))4.0x10(-8) at 90% confidence, improving on the best previous limit by 4 orders of magnitude.

Abstract: A sensitive search for the rare decays Omega(-)--Lambdapi(-) and Xi(0)--ppi(-) has been performed using data from the 1997 run of the HyperCP (Fermilab E871) experiment. Limits on other such processes do not exclude the possibility of observable rates for |DeltaS| = 2 nonleptonic hyperon decays, provided the decays occur through parity-odd operators. We obtain the branching-fraction limits B(Omega(-)--Lambdapi(-))2.9 x 10(-6) and B(Xi(0)--ppi(-))8.2 x 10(-6), both at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We have compared the p and p angular distributions in 117 x 10(6) Xi- --Lambdapi- --ppi-pi- and 41 x 10(6) Xi+ --Lambda pi+ --p pi+pi+ decays using a subset of the data from the HyperCP experiment (E871) at Fermilab. We find no evidence of CP violation, with the direct-CP-violating parameter AXiLambda identical with (alphaXialphaLambda-alpha Xialpha Lambda)/(alphaXialphaLambda+alphaXialphaLambda)=[0.0+/-5.1(stat)+/-4.4(syst)] x 10(-4).

Abstract: A study on the measurement of φ≡ using a sample of 144×106 ≡- →λπ- decays having an average polarization of 3.7% was presented. The polarized ≡-'s were produced by directing an 800 geV÷c proton beam onto a 2 mm ×2 mm× 60 mm cu target at angles of +3 and -3 mrad. The results were shown to be a 2.9× improvement over the best previous mesurements. It was shown that CP violation in charged ≡→λπ decays are not suppressed by a vanishing final phase shift difference.

The detector electronics were designed (Swoboda, 1990; Bowden, 1990; Zimmerman, 1989; Christian, 1991) to meet the specific needs of Fermilab experiment E771 using ASIC chip sets where commercial circuits were not suitable. The electronics for the SSD were designed to operate at rates up to 60 Mhz and were operated at interaction rates up to 10(7) interaction/sec (beam rates of 2 x 10(8) proton/sec). In addition to being very fast, the detector for the 1991 run was very compact with 10000 channels of active detector in a volume of 5cm x 5cm x 10cm. An expansion of the system to 16000 channels is planned for the next Fermilab fixed target run. The strip pitch ranged from 25 mum in the center of the detector near the target to 100 mum pitch at the most downstream, outer edges of the detector. The readout is a latch design with pipelined readout and appears to have single strip efficiencies of approximately 75% even in the presence of a high radiation dose (approximately 10(14) protons/CM 2) and high leakage currents(approximately 1 nA/strip). The detector and associated amplifier electronics has presently been operated at 17-degrees-C and is designed to operate as low as 8-degrees-C.

Abstract: The HyperCP experiment (E871) at Fermilab has collected the largest sample of hyperon decays in the world. With a data set of over a million Ω− → ΛΚ− decays we have measured the product of αΩαΛ from which we have extracted αΩ. This preliminary result indicates that αΩ is small, but non‐zero. Prospects for a test of CP symmetry by comparing the α parameters in Ω− and Ω+ decays will be discussed.

Abstract: The primary purpose of the HyperCP experiment at Fermilab is to test CP in hyperon decays by comparing the decay distributions for Ⅺ− (“cascade”) decays in the decay sequence: Ⅺ− → π− + Λ0, Λ0 → π− + p, with those for the antiparticle Ⅺ+. In addition, we can test CP in charged kaon decays by comparing the slopes of the Dalitz plot for Κ+ and Κ− decays. We are also looking at rare decay modes of charged kaons and hyperons, particularly those involving muons. In two runs in 1997 and 1999, we collected approx. 500 millon charged kaon decays, 2.5 billion Ⅺ− and Ⅺ+ decays, and 19 million Ω− and Ω+ decays. This is the largest sample of fully reconstructed particle decays ever collected.

Abstract: The cross sections for the hadroproduction of the {chi}{sub 1} and {chi}{sub 2} states of charmonium in proton-silicon collisions at {radical}(s)=38.8 GeV have been measured in Fermilab fixed target experiment 771. The {chi} states were observed via their radiative decay to J/{psi}{gamma}, where the photon converted to e{sup +}e{sup -} in the material of the spectrometer. The estimated values for the {chi}{sub 1} and {chi}{sub 2} cross sections for x{sub F}>0 are 263{+-}69(stat){+-}32(syst) and 498{+-}143(stat){+-}67(syst) nb per nucleon, respectively. The resulting {sigma}({chi}{sub 1})/{sigma}({chi}{sub 2}) ratio of 0.53{+-}0.20(stat){+-}0.07(syst), although somewhat larger than most theoretical expectations, can be accommodated by the latest theoretical estimates. Abstract: Fermilab experiment 871, HyperCP, is a search for direct CP violation in Ⅺ and Λ hyperon decays. A non-zero value in the asymmetry parameter A, defined in terms of the decay parameter products αⅪαΛ and αⅪαΛ, would be unambiguous evidence for direct CP violation. The first data-taking run finished at the end of 1997 and accumulated over one billion Ⅺ− and Ⅺ+ decays. A sensitivity in A of ≈10−4 is expected. A review of CP violation in hyperon decays is given, the HyperCP detector is described, and the status of the data analysis is discussed.

Abstract: Preliminary results are presented on the operational aspects of an iron‐scintillator sampling hadronic calorimeter used in the HyperCP experiment at Fermilab during the 1996-1997 fixed target run. The calorimeter used wavelength shifter fibers for light collection from scintillator sheets. Details of how the 2 m×2 mm fibers were polished, sputtered, and used for the readout are discussed. The average reflectivity of the sputtered fibers was 0.85±0.05, and the average attenuation lengths were 3.48±0.34 m. The calorimeter was designed to trigger on the proton (anti-proton) from Λ(Λ) decays, suppressing triggers from secondary interactions and background muons.

Abstract: Six medium-sized ({approx}1 {times} 2 m{sup 2}) drift chambers with pad and stripe readout have been constructed for and are presently operating in Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory experiment E-771. Each chamber module actually represents a pair of identical planes: two sets of anode wires, two sets of stripes, and two sets of pads. The wire planes are read out separately and represent X measurements in the coordinate system of the experiment. The twin stripe and pad planes are internally paired within the chamber modules; stripe signals represent Y measurements and pad signals combination X and Y measurements. Signals which develop on the stripes and pads are mirror (but inverted) images of what is seen on the wires. In addition to being used in the off-line pattern recognition, pad signals are also used as inputs to an on-line high transverse momentum (pt) trigger processor. While the techniques involved in the design and construction of the chambers are not novel, they may be of interest to experiments contemplating very large area, high rate chambers for future spectrometers.

Abstract: The aim of the present work is to investigate the link between two endocrine disruptor compounds (EDCs), which are chemicals that interfere with the hormone system in human and wildlife, and the human immune response through a study of their effects on the THP-1 human cell line which was used as a model for macrophages. We used two EDCs, diisononylphthalate (DiP) and 4-n-nonylphenol (NP) alone or in combination in order to evaluate the effects of these compounds on several parameters of the immune response - cytokine secretion, phagocytosis and the putative implication of the estrogen receptors - by studying the level of MAPK activation. NP and DiP strongly reduced phagocytosis and modify cytokine secretions. Indeed, differentiated THP-1 cell exposures (i) to 5 and 10 microM of combination of NP and DiP induced an IL-8 level in the medium respectively of 28.9 and 45 percent higher than the level obtained for the control (untreated cells), (ii) to combination of NP and DiP at 10 microM induced an increase of IL-1β level in comparison to the control level, (iii) to combination of NP and DiP induced an increase of TNF-α level whatever the concentration of EDCs tested (between 0 and 10 microM). Lastly, differentiated THP-1 cell exposure to NP, DiP alone or in combination (2 microM for each condition) induced a decrease of ERK1/2 phosphorylation in comparison to ERK1/2 phosphorylation level of the control. Moreover, differentiated THP-1 cell treatments by ICI-182780 (an estrogen receptor antagonist) supressed the EDC effects on ERK1/2 phosphorylation level which indicates an estrogen receptor-dependent pathway. These results suggest that EDCs have the ability to alter the human immune function, maybe by interfering with endocrine balance.

Abstract: The asymmetry in the rho angular distribution in the sequential decay Omega+-->LamdaKappa+-->rhopi+Kappa+. has been measured to be alphaOmegaalphaLamda=[+1.16+/-0.18(stat)+/-0.17(syst)]x10(-2) using 1.89x10(6) unpolarized Omega+ decays recorded by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab. Using the known value of alphaLamda, and assuming that alphaLamda=-alphaLamda, alphaOmega=[-1.81+/-0.28(stat)+/-0.26(syst)]x10(-2). A comparison between this measurement of alphaOmegaalphaLamda and recent measurements of alphaOmegaalphaLamda made by HyperCP shows no evidence of a violation of CP symmetry.

Abstract: A sensitive search for the lepton-number-violating decay Xi(-)-->pmu(-)mu(-) has been performed using a sample of approximately 10(9) Xi(-) hyperons produced in 800 GeV/c p-Cu collisions. We obtain B(Xi(-)-->pmu(-)mu(-))<4.0x10(-8) at 90% confidence, improving on the best previous limit by 4 orders of magnitude.

Abstract: A sensitive search for the rare decays Omega(-)--> Lambdapi(-) and Xi(0)--> ppi(-) has been performed using data from the 1997 run of the HyperCP (Fermilab E871) experiment. Limits on other such processes do not exclude the possibility of observable rates for |DeltaS| = 2 nonleptonic hyperon decays, provided the decays occur through parity-odd operators. We obtain the branching-fraction limits B(Omega(-)-->Lambdapi(-)) < 2.9 x 10(-6) and B(Xi(0)--> ppi(-)) < 8.2 x 10(-6), both at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We report the first evidence for the decay Sigma(+)-->pmu(+)mu(-) from data taken by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab. Based on three observed events, the branching ratio is B(Sigma(+)-->pmu(+)mu(-))=[8.6(+6.6)(-5.4)(stat)+/-5.5(syst)]x10(-8). The narrow range of dimuon masses may indicate that the decay proceeds via a neutral intermediate state, Sigma(+)-->pP(0),P0-->mu(+)mu(-) with a P0 mass of 214.3+/-0.5 MeV/c(2) and branching ratio B(Sigma(+)-->pP(0),P0-->mu(+)mu(-))=[3.1(+2.4)(-1.9)(stat)+/-1.5(syst)]x10(-8).

Abstract: We have compared the p and p angular distributions in 117 x 10(6) Xi- -->Lambdapi- -->ppi-pi- and 41 x 10(6) Xi+ -->Lambda pi+ -->p pi+pi+ decays using a subset of the data from the HyperCP experiment (E871) at Fermilab. We find no evidence of CP violation, with the direct-CP-violating parameter AXiLambda identical with (alphaXialphaLambda-alpha Xialpha Lambda)/(alphaXialphaLambda+alphaXialphaLambda)=[0.0+/-5.1(stat)+/-4.4(syst)] x 10(-4).

Abstract: Using data collected with the HyperCP (E871) spectrometer during the 1997 fixed-target run at Fermilab, we report the first observation of the decay K--->pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) and new measurements of the branching ratios for K+/--->pi(+/-)mu(+)mu(-). By combining the branching ratios for the decays K+-->pi(+)mu(+)mu(-) and K--->pi(-)mu(+)mu(-), we measure Gamma(K+/--->pi(+/-)mu(+)mu(-))/Gamma(K+/--->all) = (9.8+/-1.0+/-0.5)x10(-8). The CP asymmetry between the rates of the two decay modes is [Gamma(K+-->pi(+)mu(+)mu(-))-Gamma(K--->pi(-)mu(+)mu(-))]/[Gamma(K+-->pi(+)mu(+)mu(-))+Gamma(K--->pi(-)mu(+)mu(-))] = -0.02+/-0.11+/-0.04.
