Abstract

In this letter we report the first multi-differential measurement of correlated pion-proton pairs from 2 billion Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.42 GeV collected with HADES. In this energy regime the population of Δ(1232) resonances plays an important role in the way energy is distributed between intrinsic excitation energy and kinetic energy of the hadrons in the fireball. The triple differential d3N/dMπ±pdpTdy distributions of correlated π±p pairs have been determined by subtracting the πp combinatorial background using an iterative method. The invariant-mass distributions in the Δ(1232) mass region show strong deviations from a Breit-Wigner function with vacuum width and mass. The yield of correlated pion-proton pairs exhibits a complex isospin, rapidity and transverse-momentum dependence. In the invariant mass range 1.1

Abstract

We investigate identical pion HBT intensity interferometry in central Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV. High-statistics π−π− and π+π+ data are measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The radius parameters, derived from the correlation function depending on relative momenta in the longitudinally comoving system and parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, are studied as function of transverse momentum. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, particularly pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted source parameters agree well with a smooth extrapolation of the center-of-mass energy dependence established at higher energies, extending the corresponding excitation functions down towards a very low energy.

Abstract

We present first data on sub-threshold production of Ks0 mesons and Λ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV. We observe an universal 〈Apart〉 scaling of hadrons containing strangeness, independent of their corresponding production thresholds. Comparing the yields, their 〈Apart〉 scaling, and the shapes of the rapidity and the pt spectra to state-of-the-art transport model (UrQMD, HSD, IQMD) predictions, we find that none of them can simultaneously describe these observables with reasonable χ2 values.

Abstract

The production of Σ0 baryons in the nuclear reaction p (3.5 GeV) + Nb (corresponding to sNN=3.18 GeV) is studied with the detector set-up HADES at GSI, Darmstadt. Σ0s were identified via the decay Σ0→Λγ with subsequent decays Λ→pπ− in coincidence with a e+e− pair from either external (γ→e+e−) or internal (Dalitz decay γ⁎→e+e−) gamma conversions. Abstract

We present data on charged kaons (K±) and ϕ mesons in Au(1.23A GeV)+Au collisions. It is the first simultaneous measurement of K− and ϕ mesons in central heavy-ion collisions below a kinetic beam energy of 10A GeV. The ϕ/K− multiplicity ratio is found to be surprisingly high with a value of 0.52±0.16 and shows no dependence on the centrality of the collision. Consequently, the different slopes of the K+ and K− transverse-mass spectra can be explained solely by feed-down, which substantially softens the spectra of K− mesons. Hence, in contrast to the commonly adapted argumentation in literature, the different slopes do not necessarily imply diverging freeze-out temperatures of K+ and K− mesons caused by different couplings to baryons.

Abstract

Over the last two decades, there have been numerous initiatives to improve undergraduate student outcomes in STEM. One model for scalable reform is the inclusive Research Education Community (iREC). In an iREC, STEM faculty from colleges and universities across the nation are supported to adopt and sustainably implement course-based research – a form of science pedagogy that enhances student learning and persistence in science. In this study, we used pathway modeling to develop a qualitative description that explicates the HHMI Science Education Alliance (SEA) iREC as a model for facilitating the successful adoption and continued advancement of new curricular content and pedagogy. In particular, outcomes that faculty realize through their participation in the SEA iREC were identified, organized by time, and functionally linked. The resulting pathway model was then revised and refined based on several rounds of feedback from over 100 faculty members in the SEA iREC who participated in the study. Our results show that in an iREC, STEM faculty organized as a long-standing community of practice leverage one another, outside expertise, and data to adopt, implement, and iteratively advance their pedagogy. The opportunity to collaborate in this manner and, additionally, to be recognized for pedagogical contributions sustainably engages STEM faculty in the advancement of their pedagogy. Here, we present a detailed pathway model of SEA that, together with underpinning features of an iREC identified in this study, offers a framework to facilitate transformations in undergraduate science education.

Abstract

Course-based research pedagogy involves positioning students as contributors to authentic research projects as part of an engaging educational experience that promotes their learning and persistence in science. To develop a model for assessing and grading students engaged in this type of learning experience, the assessment aims and practices of a community of experienced course-based research instructors were collected and analyzed. This approach defines four aims of course-based research assessment—(1) Assessing Laboratory Work and Scientific Thinking; (2) Evaluating Mastery of Concepts, Quantitative Thinking and Skills; (3) Appraising Forms of Scientific Communication; and (4) Metacognition of Learning—along with a set of practices for each aim. These aims and practices of assessment were then integrated with previously developed models of course-based research instruction to reveal an assessment program in which instructors provide extensive feedback to support productive student engagement in research while grading those aspects of research that are necessary for the student to succeed. Assessment conducted in this way delicately balances the need to facilitate students’ ongoing research with the requirement of a final grade without undercutting the important aims of a CRE education.

Abstract

Two lytic phages infecting Gordonia rubripertincta were isolated from irrigated desert soil. Phage LilyPad and PokyPuppy have 64,158-bp and 77,065-bp genomes, respectively. Based on gene content similarity to phages in the Actinobacteriophage database, LilyPad is assigned to phage subcluster DG1 and PokyPuppy to subcluster CS2.

Abstract

Resume Objectif Depuis une dizaine d’annees, le nombre de mastectomies bilaterales prophylactiques avec reconstruction prothetique est en constante augmentation. Nous decrivons une nouvelle strategie et analysons sa faisabilite et sa securite. Methode Il s’agit d’une etude retrospective descriptive monocentrique. Le premier temps operatoire consistait a obtenir une capsule peri-prothetique autour d’implants et corriger une eventuelle ptose ou hypertrophie mammaire. Lors du second temps etait realisee une mastectomie avec conservation de l’etui cutane et de la plaque areolo-mamelonaire et changement des implants pour un volume superieur. Le troisieme temps etait consacre au lipofilling. Resultats Sept patientes ont ete incluses dont 6 avec mutation BRCA1. L’âge moyen etait de 35,6 ans [29,6 ; 41,6], l’IMC moyen de 23,8 kg/m2 [20,6 ; 27], le tour de poitrine moyen a 93,7 cm [87,4 ; 100], le bonnet moyen C- [B- ; D-]. 4 femmes avaient une ptose ou une hypertrophie mammaire. Le nombre moyen d’intervention par femme etait de 3,6 [2,5 ; 4,7]. Le volume moyen des implants etait de 248,6 mL [211,3 ; 285,9]. Le deuxieme temps etait realise en moyenne 33,9 semaines [22,3 ; 45,5] plus tard. L’augmentation moyenne du volume des protheses etait de 120 mL [80,4 ; 159,6]. 4 patientes ont presente des complications dont 1 exposition de prothese. 6 patientes ont beneficie d’un lipofilling d’un volume moyen par sein de 175 mL [116 ; 234]. Conclusion Les avantages seraient de diminuer le taux de complications, d’ameliorer le resultat esthetique et de diminuer l’impact psychologique de la chirurgie.

Abstract

Flow coefficients vn of the orders n=1-6 are measured with the High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI for protons, deuterons, and tritons as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV. Combining the information from the flow coefficients of all orders allows us to construct for the first time, at collision energies of a few GeV, a multidifferential picture of the angular emission pattern of these particles. It reflects the complicated interplay between the effect of the central fireball pressure on the emission of particles and their subsequent interaction with spectator matter. The high precision information on higher order flow coefficients is a major step forward in constraining the equation of state of dense baryonic matter.

Abstract

We present high-statistic data on charged-pion emission from Au + Au collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.4~\hbox {GeV}$$ s NN = 2.4 GeV (corresponding to $$E_{beam} = 1.23~\hbox {A GeV}$$ E beam = 1.23 A GeV ) in four centrality classes in the range 0–40% of the most central collisions. The data are analyzed as a function of transverse momentum, transverse mass, rapidity, and polar angle. Pion multiplicity per participating nucleon decreases moderately with increasing centrality. The polar angular distributions are found to be non-isotropic even for the most central event class. Our results on pion multiplicity fit well into the general trend of the available world data, but undershoot by $$2.5~\sigma $$ 2.5 σ data from the FOPI experiment measured at slightly lower beam energy. We compare our data to state-of-the-art transport model calculations (PHSD, IQMD, PHQMD, GiBUU and SMASH) and find substantial differences between the measurement and the results of these calculations.

Abstract

We present an analysis of proton-number fluctuations in sNN=2.4 GeV Au197+Au197 collisions measured with the High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. With the help of extensive detector simulations done with Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) transport model events including nuclear clusters, various nuisance effects influencing the observed proton cumulants have been investigated. Acceptance and efficiency corrections have been applied as a function of fine-grained rapidity and transverse momentum bins, as well as considering local track density dependencies. Next, the effects of volume changes within particular centrality selections have been considered and beyond-leading-order corrections have been applied to the data. The efficiency and volume-corrected proton number moments and cumulants Kn of orders n=1, 2, 3, and 4 have been obtained as a function of centrality and phase-space bin, as well as the corresponding correlators Cn. We find that the observed correlators show a power-law scaling with the mean number of protons, i.e., Cn∞«N»n, indicative of mostly long-range multiparticle correlations in momentum space. We also present a comparison of our results with Au + Au collision data obtained at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at similar centralities but higher √sNN.

Abstract

Pion induced reactions provide unique opportunities for an unambiguous description of baryonic resonances and their coupling channels by means of a partial wave analysis. Using the secondary pion beam at SIS18, the two pion production in the second resonance region has been investigated to unravel the role of the $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance in the intermediate $\rho$ production. Results on exclusive channels with one pion ($\pi^{-}p$) and two pions ($\pi^{+}\pi^{-}n$, $\pi^{0}\pi^{-}p$) in the final state measured in the $\pi^{-}-p$ reaction at four different pion beam momenta (0.650, 0.685, 0.733, and 0.786 GeV/c) are presented. The excitation function of the different partial waves and $\Delta\pi$, $N\sigma$ and $N\rho$ isobar configurations is obtained, using the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis. The $N(1520) \frac{3}{2}^-$ resonance is found to dominate the $N\rho$ final state with the branching ratio $BR=12.2 \pm 1.9\%$.

Abstract

For the past decades, number of prophylactic bilateral mastectomies using reconstruction with implants increases. We describe a new surgical strategy and analyse its safety and feasability.It is a retrospective, descriptive and monocentric study. The first step of surgery consisted in obteining a peri-prosthetic capsule with implants and if there was a mammary hypertrophy and/or ptosis, it was corrected at the same time. The second step of surgery was the nipple-sparing mastectomy with change of implants for bigger ones. Third step consisted in a lipofilling.Seven patients were included. 6 women had a BRCA1 gene mutation. Mean age was 35.6 year-old [29.6; 41.6], mean BMI was 23.8kg/mThis new strategy could decrease complication rate, improve aesthetic outcome and decrease psychological impact of surgery.

Abstract

Resume Introduction Les brulures chimiques sont rares mais entrainent des lesions cutanees souvent profondes. Les agents basiques possedent un pouvoir penetrant fort et prolonge, provoquant des brulures evolutives sur plusieurs jours. Le traitement local de ces patients est chirurgical associant excision et couverture par greffe de peau mince. Realisees precocement dans un contexte d’agent chimique, ces greffes sont de prise difficile, retardant la cicatrisation. Nous proposons donc pour ces patients de differer la greffe de peau mince, 10 jours apres l’excision de la brulure. Nous presentons une etude comparative originale et nouvelle pour evaluer notre strategie chirurgicale en deux temps. Materiel et methodes Nous avons realise une etude retrospective des patients victimes de brulures profondes par agents basiques pris en charge dans le centre des brules de Lille. Les caracteristiques epidemiologiques et les modalites de prise en charge chirurgicales ont ete etudiees sur dossier. Nous avons compare la duree de cicatrisation et le taux de lyse de greffes de peau chez les patients ayant beneficie d’une couverture initiale (temoins) ou secondaire (cas) apres excision. Cette comparaison a ete possible apres appariement sur l’âge et le sexe. Resultats Notre population a inclus 25 temoins et 16 cas. Les hommes etaient majoritairement atteints avec un âge moyen de 41,9 ans. Les brulures etaient localisees dans 78 % des cas aux membres inferieurs. Le delai entre la brulure et l’excision etait en moyenne de 16,5 jours. Chez les cas, la greffe de peau mince etait realisee en moyenne 11,3 jours apres l’excision initiale. Nous n’avons pas mis en evidence de difference significative entre les deux groupes pour la surface corporelle totale atteinte, la topographie des brulures et l’agent causal. La duree de cicatrisation etait significativement plus courte chez les cas par rapport aux temoins (37,5 jours vs 50,3 jours ; p Conclusion Notre etude montre l’interet d’une strategie chirurgicale en deux temps chez les patients victimes de brulures par agents basiques. L’excision dite precoce associee a la realisation d’une greffe de peau mince dans un second temps permet une cicatrisation plus rapide et diminue les risques de lyse de greffe.

Abstract

A 64-channel readout and data-acquisition module is described in detail. It consists of an H12700 multianode photomultiplier tube, four PADIWA preamplifier boards, and a TRB v3 card that perform the functions of a time-to-digital converter and a data concentrator. The software modules that are necessary for operation of the prototype are described. The inter-channel delays are calibrated. The drift of individual delays does not exceed 0.5 ns for the entire measurement time. The spectra of the “time over threshold” (ToT) are investigated. The influence of periodic noise pickups and the need to improve circuit designs are revealed. The timing properties of the wavelength shifter and its effect on the detection efficiency for Cherenkov rings are investigated. The most intense component is characterized by a decay time of 1.1 ns and there are components with characteristic times of 3.8 and 45 ns. The influence of single-electron spectrum features on the detection efficiency for photoelectrons and the probability of false hits are determined. The total time resolution of 131 channels is 1.1 ns (FWHM). The results make it possible to use the investigated system of readout and data acquisition in the CBM experiment. Nevertheless, the elimination of the revealed shortcomings will provide the efficiency margin and improve the reliability of the system during long-term operation.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR) will investigate the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter at high net-baryon density and moderate temperature in A+A collisions. One of the key detectors of CBM to explore this physics program is a Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detector for electron identification. For a high performance of the RICH detector precise mirror alignment is essential. A three-step correction cycle has been developed, which will be discussed: First a qualitative, fast check of the mirror positions, second a quantitative determination of possible misalignments and third a software correction routine, allowing a proper functioning of the RICH under misalignment conditions.

Abstract

The CBM-RICH detector is designed to identify electrons with momenta up to 8 GeV/c and high purity as this is essential for the CBM physics program. The detector consist of a CO2-gaseous radiator, a spherical mirror system, and Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT) of type H12700 from Hamamatsu as photon detectors. The detector concept was verified through R&D studies and a laterally scaled prototype. The results were summarized in a TDR, in which open issues were defined concerning the readout electronics, the shielding of the magnetic stray field in the MAPMT region, the radiation hardness of the MAPMT sensors, and the mechanical holding structure of the mirror system. In this article an overview is given on the CBM RICH development with focus on those open issues.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future FAIR facility will investigate the QCD phase diagram at high net baryon densities and moderate temperatures in A+A collisions from 2 to 11 AGeV (SIS100). Electron identification in CBM will be performed by a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector and Transition Radiation Detectors (TRD). A real size prototype of the RICH detector was tested together with other CBM groups at the CERN PS/T9 beam line in 2014. For the first time the data format used the FLESnet protocol from CBM delivering free streaming data. The analysis was fully performed within the CBMROOT framework. In this contribution the data analysis and the event reconstruction methods which were used for obtained data are discussed. Rings were reconstructed using an algorithm based on the Hough Transform method and their parameters were derived with high accuracy by circle and ellipse fitting procedures. We present results of the application of the presented algorithms. In particular we compare results with and without Wavelength shifting (WLS) coating.

Abstract

The CBM RICH detector is an integral component of the future CBM experiment at FAIR, providing efficient electron identification and pion suppression necessary for the measurement of rare dileptonic probes in heavy ion collisions. An overview of the CBM RICH readout and DAQ system prototype is given, consisting of the PADIWA preamplifier-discriminator board, the TDC-HUB board TRBv3, and DAQ and analysis code in the CbmRoot framework. The laboratory setup built for studying the timing characteristics of the readout chain and the analysis results obtained using the laboratory measurements are presented. The fine time calibration and inter-channel delay correction techniques and their implementation and effect are discussed.

Abstract

High-statistics $$\pi ^-\pi ^-$$π-π- and $$\pi ^+\pi ^+$$π+π+ femtoscopy data are presented for Au + Au collisions at $$\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 2.4~\hbox {GeV}$$sNN=2.4GeV, measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The experimental correlation functions allow the determination of the space-time extent of the corresponding emission sources via a comparison to models. The emission source, parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, is studied in dependence on pair transverse momentum, azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane, collision centrality and beam energy. For all centralities and transverse momenta, a geometrical distribution of ellipsoidal shape is found in the plane perpendicular to the beam direction with the larger extension perpendicular to the reaction plane. For large transverse momenta, the corresponding eccentricity approaches the initial eccentricity. The eccentricity is smallest for most central collisions, where the shape is almost circular. The magnitude of the tilt angle of the emission ellipsoid in the reaction plane decreases with increasing centrality and increasing transverse momentum. All source radii increase with centrality, largely exhibiting a linear rise with the cube root of the number of participants. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, appearing most pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted source parameters are consistent with the extrapolation of their energy dependence down from higher energies.

Abstract

In this letter we report the first multi-differential measurement of correlated pion-proton pairs from 2 billion Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.42 GeV collected with HADES. In this energy regime the population of \Delta(1232) resonances plays an important role in the way energy is distributed between intrinsic excitation energy and kinetic energy of the hadrons in the fireball. The triple differential d3N/dM{\pi}pdpTdy distributions of correlated {\pi}p pairs have been determined by subtracting the {\pi}p combinatorial background using an iterative method. The invariant-mass distributions in the \Delta(1232) mass region show strong deviations from a Breit-Wigner function with vacuum width and mass. The yield of correlated pion-proton pairs exhibits a complex isospin, rapidity and transverse-momentum dependence. In the invariant mass range 1.1 < Minv (GeV/c2) < 1.4, the yield is found to be similar for {\pi}+p and {\pi}-p pairs, and to follow a power law ^{\alpha}, where is the mean number of participating nucleons. The exponent {\alpha} depends strongly on the pair transverse momentum (pT) while its pT-integrated and charge-averaged value is {\alpha} = 1.5 \pm 0.08stat \pm 0.2sys., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We present the first observation of K- and \phi absorption within nuclear matter by means of \pi- -induced reactions on C and W targets at an incident beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c studied with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The double ratio (K-/K+)W / (K-/K+)C is found to be 0.319 \pm 0.009(stat)+0.014-0.012 (syst) indicating a larger absorption of K- in heavier targets as compared to lighter ones. The measured \phi/K- ratios in \pi-+C and \pi^- +W reactions within the HADES acceptance are found to be equal to $0.55 \pm 0.03(stat)+0.06-0.07$ (syst) and to $0.63 \pm 0.05(stat)-0.11+0.11$ (syst), respectively. The similar ratios measured in the two different reactions demonstrate for the first time experimentally that the dynamics of the \phi meson in nuclear medium is strongly coupled to the K- dynamics. The large difference in the \phi production off C and W nuclei is discussed in terms of a strong \phiN in-medium coupling., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The expansion of soft tissue, especially skin, is an old and physiological process to increase the skin reserve allowing excision while coveraging of the resulting loss of substance. Easy in principle, this process is subjected to constraints in children requiring precise planning and rigorous technical procedure. Between 1990 and 2016, we performed 293 expansion protocols with 411 implants in 244 children. The scalp was the most interested area (158 cases), followed by the trunk (29). The congenital nevi represented the most frequent indication (119 cases), followed by sequelae of burns and scars (64 cases) and hamartoma sebaceous of Jadassohn (27 cases). Three categories of indication can be established. Ideal indications of the expansion are on the scalp, skin preparation prior to the excision of a large nevus, nevus sebaceous of Jadhasson and severe breast hypoplasia. Common but delicate indications are scars, especially after burns, treatment of vertex aplasia cutis congenita and expansions of the limbs, abdomen, head and neck. Rare indications include separation of Siamese twins, or protection of the bowel before radiotherapy. Contra-indications are infected lesions, malignant tumors and lesions requiring immediate coverage. If the principle of expansion is relatively simple, its positioning on the scale of reconstruction methods is harder because of the risk of significant complications.

Abstract

In 2015 1100 Multi-Anode Photo-Multipliers (MAPMTs) of type HAMAMATSU H12700 were ordered to equip the photon detection plane of the CBM-RICH and HADES-RICH detectors. Both experiments aim to study the properties of dense matter produced in heavy ion collisions. To measure the characteristics of all ordered MAPMTs and give feedback to the manufacturer, a test bench was built at the University of Wuppertal. This paper describes the working principle of the test bench and compiles the measurements of the first 400 H12700 MAPMTs delivered. The average characteristics of the H12700 gathered from these measurements are discussed and compared to measurements of the HAMAMATSU H8500.

Abstract

A real size prototype of the CBM RICH detector was tested in beam at CERN in November 2014 with new readout electronics. A detailed analysis of the timing characteristics of the readout chain will be presented in this article. Results of the time precision measurements for several subsets of all channels and the stability of the fine time calibration will be discussed. The obtained sub-nanosecond time precision allows also to investigate the effect on timing when using additional wavelength-shifting films on top of the MAPMT windows.

Abstract

The HADES collaboration uses the e+e−production as a probe of the resonance matter produced in collisions at incident energies of 1-3.5 GeV/nucleon at GSI. Elementary reactions provide useful references for these studies and give information on resonance Dalitz decays (R→Ne+e−). Such processes are sensitive to the structure of time-like electromagnetic baryon transitions in a kinematic range where (off-shell) vector mesons play a crucial role. Results obtained in proton-proton reactions and in a commissioning pion-beam experiment are reported and prospects for future pion beam experiments and for first hyperon Dalitz decay measurements are described. The connection with the investigations of medium effects to be continued with HADES in the next years at SIS18 and SIS100 is also discussed.

Abstract

International audience; About 10 μs after the Big Bang, the universe was filled—in addition to photons and leptons—with strong-interaction matter consisting of quarks and gluons, which transitioned to hadrons at temperatures close to kT = 150 MeV and densities several times higher than those found in nuclei. This quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter can be created in the laboratory as a transient state by colliding heavy ions at relativistic energies. The different phases in which QCD matter may exist depend for example on temperature, pressure or baryochemical potential, and can be probed by studying the emission of electromagnetic radiation. Electron–positron pairs emerge from the decay of virtual photons, which immediately decouple from the strong interaction, and thus provide information about the properties of QCD matter at various stages. Here, we report the observation of virtual photon emission from baryon-rich QCD matter. The spectral distribution of the electron–positron pairs is nearly exponential, providing evidence for a source of temperature in excess of 70 MeV with constituents whose properties have been modified, thus reflecting peculiarities of strong-interaction QCD matter. Its bulk properties are similar to the dense matter formed in the final state of a neutron star merger, as apparent from recent multimessenger observation.

Abstract

We investigate identical pion HBT intensity interferometry for central Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV. High-statistics $\pi^-\pi^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^+$ data are measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The radius parameters, derived from the correlation function depending on relative momenta in the longitudinal-comoving system and parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, are studied as function of transverse momentum. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, particularly pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted Coulomb-corrected source parameters agree well with a smooth extrapolation of the center-of-mass energy dependence established at higher energies, extending the corresponding excitation functions down towards a very low energy. Our data would thus rather disfavour any strong energy dependence of the radius parameters in the low energy region., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, updated author and grant lists

Abstract

Wavelength-shifting (WLS) films of p-terphenyl have been applied by means of dip-coating on the entrance window of the H12700 multi anode photomultiplier (MAPMT) in order to enhance the UV sensitivity. Using coated and uncoated MAPMTs in a CBM RICH testbox in a proton testbeam at the COSY accelerator, an enhancement of the number of hits per ring of 15%–20% depending on cuts has been observed. Due to new fast readout electronics of the RICH detector for the CBM/ HADES experiments, the time response of p-terphenyl has been measured to show a decay constant of 2.35 ns. This compares well with time-resolved fluorescence measurements of the films.

Abstract

The upgraded HADES RICH detector, as well as the future CBM RICH detector, will both use the same Hamamatsu H12700 Multianode PMTs read out by the newly developed DiRICH FPGA-TDC readout chain for MAPMTs and MCPs. The upgrade of the HADES RICH photon detector has meanwhile been completed, and we are now looking forward to the upcoming physics run in spring 2019. A brief overview on the status of both detector projects is given and supplemented with the recent test-beam results which confirmed the functionality of the DiRICH development before the start of the mass-production of all DiRICH components needed for the HADES RICH upgrade.

Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR) complex will explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter at high baryon density and moderate temperatures in A+A collisions. The energy spectrum will start at 2 AGeV/c and extend up to 11 AGeV/c for the heaviest nuclei at the SIS 100 accelerator set-up. To explore the physics program of CBM, a RICH detector will be employed for electron identification and pion suppression in a momentum range up to 8 GeV/c. Mirror alignment is a key issue for a proper detector operation. The final conceptual design for a monitoring system of the alignment of the mirrors of the CBM RICH detector will be introduced. It consists of a fast qualitative check of the alignment as well as two different methods to derive quantitative numbers for misalignments. A software correction cycle had been developed which, once applied allows to get back to physics performances as in an ideally aligned case.

Abstract

Wavelength-shifting (WLS) films were applied on UV-extended front windows of multianode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) in order to increase the sensitivity of the MAPMTs at shorter wavelengths. The WLS material contained p-Terphenyl as photoactive component, which absorbs shorter wavelength photons ( 300 nm ) and re-emits fluorescence photons around 350 nm, i.e., at the maximum of the PMTs׳ sensitivity. The films were applied by means of dip-coating and the film performance was studied with respect to quantum efficiency, film homogeneity, and crosstalk on the MAPMTs. Using WLS-film-covered MAPMTs in a gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector, the number of detected photoelectrons per ring increased by up to 21% in an in-beam test.

Abstract

The haloarchaea are unusual in possessing genes for multiple homologs to the ubiquitous single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSB or replication protein A, RPA) found in all three domains of life. Halobacterium salinarum contains five homologs: two are eukaryotic in organization, two are prokaryotic and are encoded on the minichromosomes, and one is uniquely euryarchaeal. Radiation-resistant mutants previously isolated show upregulation of one of the eukaryotic-type RPA genes. Here, we have created deletions in the five RPA operons. These deletion mutants were exposed to DNA-damaging conditions: ionizing radiation, UV radiation, and mitomycin C. Deletion of the euryarchaeal homolog, although not lethal as in Haloferax volcanii, causes severe sensitivity to all of these agents. Deletion of the other RPA/SSB homologs imparts a variable sensitivity to these DNA-damaging agents, suggesting that the different RPA homologs have specialized roles depending on the type of genomic insult encountered.

40. [Deep alkali burns: Evaluation of a two-step surgical strategy]

Abstract

Chemical burns are rare but often lead to deep cutaneous lesions. Alkali agents have a deep and long lasting penetrating power, causing burns that evolve over several days. The local treatment for these patients is excision of the wound and split thickness skin graft. Early excision and immediate skin grafting of alkali burns are more likely to be complicated by graft failure and delayed wound healing. We propose a two-step method that delays skin grafting until two-three days after burn wound excision.Our population included 25 controls and 16 cases. Men were predominant with a mean age of 41.9 years. In 78% of cases, burns were located on the lower limbs. The mean delay between the burn and excision was 16.5 days. In cases, the skin graft was performed at a mean of 11.3 days after the initial excision. We did not unveil any significant difference between both groups for the total skin surface affected, topography of the burns and the causal agent. Wound healing was significantly shorter in cases vs controls (37.5 days vs 50.3 days; P0.025). Furthermore, we observed a decreased number of graft failures in cases vs controls (13.3% vs 46.7%; P=0.059).Our study shows the relevance of a two-step surgical strategy in patients with alkali chemical burns. Early excision followed by interval skin grafting is associated with quicker wound healing and decreased rate of graft failure.

Abstract

Background Metabolism of carbon bound in wheat arabinoxylan (WAX) polysaccharides by bacteria requires a number of glycoside hydrolases active toward different bonds between sugars and other molecules. Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius is a Gram-positive thermoacidophilic bacterium capable of growth on a variety of mono-, di-, oligo-, and polysaccharides. Nineteen proposed glycoside hydrolases have been annotated in the A. acidocaldarius Type Strain ATCC27009/DSM 446 genome. Experiments were performed to understand the effect of monosaccharides on gene expression during growth on the polysaccharide, WAX. Results Molecular analysis using high-density oligonucleotide microarrays was performed on A. acidocaldarius strain ATCC27009 when growing on WAX. When a culture growing exponentially at the expense of arabinoxylan saccharides was challenged with glucose or xylose, most glycoside hydrolases were downregulated. Interestingly, regulation was more intense when xylose was added to the culture than when glucose was added, showing a clear departure from classical carbon catabolite repression demonstrated by many Gram-positive bacteria. In silico analyses of the regulated glycoside hydrolases, along with the results from the microarray analyses, yielded a potential mechanism for arabinoxylan metabolism by A. acidocaldarius. Glycoside hydrolases expressed by this strain may have broad substrate specificity, and initial hydrolysis is catalyzed by an extracellular xylanase, while subsequent steps are likely performed inside the growing cell. Conclusions Glycoside hydrolases, for the most part, appear to be found in clusters, throughout the A. acidocaldarius genome. Not all of the glycoside hydrolase genes found at loci within these clusters were regulated during the experiment, indicating that a specific subset of the 19 glycoside hydrolase genes found in A. acidocaldarius were used during metabolism of WAX. While specific functions of the glycoside hydrolases were not tested as part of the research discussed, many of the glycoside hydrolases found in the A. acidocaldarius Type Strain appear to have a broader substrate range than that represented by the glycoside hydrolase family in which the enzymes were categorized.

Abstract

We report on the investigation of Δ(1232) production and decay in proton-proton collisions at a kinetic energy of 1.25 GeV measured with HADES. Exclusive dilepton decay channels ppe+e− and ppe+e−γ have been studied and compared with the partial-wave analysis of the hadronic ppπ0 channel. They allow to access both Δ+→pπ0(e+e−γ) and Δ+→pe+e− Dalitz decay channels. The perfect reconstruction of the well-known π0 Dalitz decay serves as a proof of the consistency of the analysis. The Δ Dalitz decay is identified for the first time and the sensitivity to N-Δ transition form factors is tested. The Δ(1232) Dalitz decay branching ratio is also determined for the first time; our result is (4.19 ± 0.62 syst. ± 0.34 stat.) ×10−5, albeit with some model dependence.

Abstract

Planetary protection is governed by the Outer Space Treaty and includes the practice of protecting planetary bodies from contamination by Earth life. Although studies are constantly expanding our knowledge about life in extreme environments, it is still unclear what the probability is for terrestrial organisms to survive and grow on Mars. Having this knowledge is paramount to addressing whether microorganisms transported from Earth could negatively impact future space exploration. The objectives of this study were to identify cultivable microorganisms collected from the surface of the Mars Science Laboratory, to distinguish which of the cultivable microorganisms can utilize energy sources potentially available on Mars, and to determine the survival of the cultivable microorganisms upon exposure to physiological stresses present on the martian surface. Approximately 66% (237) of the 358 microorganisms identified are related to members of the Bacillus genus, although surprisingly, 22% of all isolates belong to non-spore-forming genera. A small number could grow by reduction of potential growth substrates found on Mars, such as perchlorate and sulfate, and many were resistant to desiccation and ultraviolet radiation (UVC). While most isolates either grew in media containing ≥10% NaCl or at 4°C, many grew when multiple physiological stresses were applied. The study yields details about the microorganisms that inhabit the surfaces of spacecraft after microbial reduction measures, information that will help gauge whether microorganisms from Earth pose a forward contamination risk that could impact future planetary protection policy. Abstract

The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future FAIR facility will investigate the QCD phase diagram at high net-baryon densities and moderate temperatures. One of the key signatures will be di-leptons emitted from the hot and dense phase in heavy-ion collisions. Measuring di-electrons, a high purity of identified electrons is required in order to suppress the background. Electron identification in CBM will be performed by a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector and Transition Radiation Detectors (TRD). In order to access the foreseen rare probes, the detector and the data acquisition have to handle interaction rates up to 10 MHz. Therefore, the development of fast and efficient event reconstruction algorithms is an important and challenging task in CBM. In this contribution event reconstruction and electron identification algorithms in the RICH detector are presented. So far they have been developed on simulated data but could already be tested on real data from a RICH prototype testbeam experiment at the CERN-PS. Efficient and fast ring recognition algorithms in the CBM-RICH are based on the Hough Transform method. Due to optical distortions of the rings, an ellipse fitting algorithm was elaborated to improve the ring radius resolution. An efficient algorithm based on the Artificial Neural Network was implemented for electron identification in RICH. All algorithms were significantly optimized to achieve maximum speed and minimum memory consumption.

Abstract

The model archaeon Halobacterium salinarum ssp. NRC-1 is an excellent system for the study of archaeal molecular biology. Unlike many other archaea, its only special growth requirement is high levels of sodium chloride and other salts; it requires neither high-temperature incubation nor anaerobic environments. Additionally, there are a number of well-developed post-genomic tools available, including whole-genome microarrays and a ura3-based gene deletion system. While some tools are available for protein expression, a system for measurement and purification of protein expressed from native promoters is lacking. We have adapted the established H. salinarum gene deletion system for this purpose, and have used this to place 8 ×-histidine tags on either the carboxyl or amino terminus of the protein encoded by the chromosomal rfa3 gene. To demonstrate the utility of this approach, we used Western blot analysis to determine levels of the Rfa3 protein under different conditions. This system provides another powerful molecular tool for studies of native protein expression and for simple protein purification in H. salinarum.

Abstract

International audience; Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 ( $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.7--4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials ( $\mu_B > 500$ MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation of state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2024, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract

The expansion of soft tissue, especially skin, is an old and physiological process to increase the skin reserve allowing excision while coveraging of the resulting loss of substance. Easy in principle, this process is subjected to constraints in children requiring precise planning and rigorous technical procedure. Between 1990 and 2016, we performed 293 expansion protocols with 411 implants in 244 children. The scalp was the most interested area (158 cases), followed by the trunk (29). The congenital nevi represented the most frequent indication (119 cases), followed by sequelae of burns and scars (64 cases) and hamartoma sebaceous of Jadassohn (27 cases). Three categories of indication can be established. Ideal indications of the expansion are on the scalp, skin preparation prior to the excision of a large nevus, nevus sebaceous of Jadhasson and severe breast hypoplasia. Common but delicate indications are scars, especially after burns, treatment of vertex aplasia cutis congenita and expansions of the limbs, abdomen, head and neck. Rare indications include separation of Siamese twins, or protection of the bowel before radiotherapy. Contra-indications are infected lesions, malignant tumors and lesions requiring immediate coverage. If the principle of expansion is relatively simple, its positioning on the scale of reconstruction methods is harder because of the risk of significant complications.

Abstract

Electron identification in the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will be performed using a gaseous RICH detector. Due to the UV transparency of the CO 2 radiator, a high photon detection efficiency of the PMTs in use at small wavelengths is favourable. The use of wavelength shifting (WLS) films aims at increasing the integral quantum efficiency of the photon sensors. WLS films absorb UV photons and re-emit photons at longer wavelengths where the quantum efficiency of common photocathodes is higher. As photon sensors, multianode PMTs (MAPMTs) with bialkali or superbialkali photocathodes and UV-extended windows are envisaged. We present quantum efficiency measurements with and without WLS coating for different types of MAPMTs as well as results from a beam test at the CERN PS. An increased photon yield was observed when using WLS films. In addition, we discuss the effect of WLS films on the spatial resolution of MAPMTs.
