In August 2015, the Curiosity Mars rover discovered tridymite, a high‐temperature silica polymorph, in Gale crater. The existing model for its occurrence suggests erosion and detrital sedimentation from silicic volcanic rocks in the crater rim or central peak. The chemistry and mineralogy of the tridymite‐bearing rocks, however, are not consistent with silicic volcanic material. Using data from Curiosity, including chemical composition from the Alpha Particle X‐ray Spectrometer, mineralogy from the CheMin instrument, and evolved gas and isotopic analyses from the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, we show that the tridymite‐bearing rocks exhibit similar chemical patterns with silica‐rich alteration halos which crosscut the stratigraphy. We infer that the tridymite formed in‐place through hydrothermal processes and show additional chemical and mineralogical results from Gale crater consistent with hydrothermal activity occurring after sediment deposition and lithification.

We present APXS data for the active Bagnold dune field within the Gale impact crater (MSL mission). We derive an APXS-based Average Basaltic Soil (ABS) composition for Mars based on past and recent data from the MSL and MER missions. This represents an update to the Taylor and McLennan (2009) average martian soil, and facilitates comparison across martian datasets. The active Bagnold dune field is compositionally distinct from the ABS, with elevated Mg, Ni and Fe, suggesting mafic mineral enrichment, and uniformly low levels of S, Cl and Zn, indicating only a minimal dust component. A relationship between decreasing grain size and increasing felsic content is revealed. The Bagnold Sands possess the lowest S/Cl of all martian unconsolidated materials.. Gale soils exhibit relatively uniform major element compositions, similar to Meridiani Planum and Gusev Crater basaltic soils (MER missions). However, they show minor enrichments in K, Cr, Mn and Fe, which may signify a local contribution. The lithified eolian Stimson Formation within the Gale impact crater is compositionally similar to the ABS and Bagnold sands, which provide a modern analogue for these ancient eolian deposits. Compilation of APXS-derived soil data reveals a generally homogenous global composition for martian soils, but one that can be locally modified due to past or extant geologic processes that are limited in both space and time.

The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover performed coordinated measurements to examine the textures and compositions of aeolian sands in the active Bagnold dune field. The Bagnold sands are rounded to subrounded, very fine to medium sized (~45–500 μm) with ≥6 distinct grain colors. In contrast to sands examined by Curiosity in a dust‐covered, inactive bedform called Rocknest and soils at other landing sites, Bagnold sands are darker, less red, better sorted, have fewer silt‐sized or smaller grains, and show no evidence for cohesion. Nevertheless, Bagnold mineralogy and Rocknest mineralogy are similar with plagioclase, olivine, and pyroxenes in similar proportions comprising >90% of crystalline phases, along with a substantial amorphous component (35% ± 15%). Yet Bagnold and Rocknest bulk chemistry differ. Bagnold sands are Si enriched relative to other soils at Gale crater, and H2O, S, and Cl are lower relative to all previously measured Martian soils and most Gale crater rocks. Mg, Ni, Fe, and Mn are enriched in the coarse‐sieved fraction of Bagnold sands, corroborated by visible/near‐infrared spectra that suggest enrichment of olivine. The Rb–Sr, Pb–Pb and Sm–Nd isotope chemistry of impact-generated melt and target rocks has been determined from the 214 Ma, ∼90 km rim-diameter, Manicouagan impact structure of Canada. Fifty-seven samples were obtained from 8 field sites and 11 drill core sites across the impact melt sheet, located on the 55 km-diameter central island (Ile Rene-Levasseur). The results reveal that the impact melt, though locally differentiated via fractional crystallization, was isotopically homogenized during its formation following its derivation primarily from charnockites and mesocratic gneisses. The isotopic signatures of the target rocks indicate that the protolith for the melt was the Proterozoic Manicouagan Imbricate Zone, and that the underlying Archean Gagnon Terrane was not involved in melt production, or its subsequent modification via assimilation, despite impact melt resting on Archean lithologies in the southwest sector of the melt sheet. The 90 km diameter, late Triassic Manicouagan impact structure of Quebec, Canada, is a well-preserved, undeformed complex crater possessing an anorthositic central uplift and a 55 km diameter melt sheet. As such, it provides a valuable terrestrial analogue for impact structures developed on other planetary bodies, especially the Moon and Mars, which are currently the focus of exploration initiatives. The scientific value of Manicouagan has recently been enhanced due to the production, between 1994 and 2006, of ∼18 km of drill core from 38 holes by the mineral exploration industry. Three of these holes are in excess of 1.5 km deep, with the deepest reaching 1.8 km. Here we combine recent field work, sampling and the drill core data with previous knowledge to provide insight into processes occurring at Manicouagan and, by inference, within extraterrestrial impact structures. Four areas of comparative planetology are discussed: impact melt sheets, central uplifts, impact-generated hydrothermal regimes and footwall breccias. Human training and instrument testing opportunities are also considered. The drill core reveals that the impact melt and clast-bearing impact melts in the centre of the structure reach thicknesses of 1.4 km. The 1.1 km thick impact melt has undergone differentiation to yield a lower monzodiorite, a transitional quartz monzodiorite and an upper quartz monzonite sequence. This calls into question the previous citing of Manicouagan as an exemplar of a relatively large crater possessing an undifferentiated melt sheet, which was used as a rationale for assigning different composition lunar impact melts and clast-bearing impact melts to separate cratering events. The predominantly anorthositic central uplift at Manicouagan is comparable to certain lunar highlands material, with morphometric analogies to the King, Tycho, Pythagoras, Jackson, and Copernicus impact structures, which have similar diameters and uplift structure. Excellent exposure of the Manicouagan uplift facilitates mapping and an appraisal of its formation and collapse mechanisms, enhanced by drill core data from the centre of the structure. Recent field studies at the edge of the central island at Manicouagan, and multiple drill core sections through footwall lithologies, provide insight into allochthonous (clastic and suevitic) and autochthonous breccia formation, as well as shock effects. The hydrothermal regimes developed at Manicouagan are akin to systems proposed for Noachian (>3.5 Ga) Mars that involve alteration of impact melts via meteoritic and surface waters, with the generation of phyllosilicates, zeolites, hematite, sulfates and sulfides that can contribute to martian soil formation and sedimentation processes.

[1] Recent exploration drilling of the Manicouagan impact structure has revealed local developments of impact melt that are substantially thicker than the previously accepted average of ∼300 m and a more complex melt sheet–basement interface showing considerable “topography.” The thickest section (1045 m of clast-free to clast-poor impact melt overlying 425 m of clast-laden impact melt) is associated with a centrally located, fault-bounded graben that was in place prior to melt crystallization. Here we report the results of a geochemical investigation of 115 samples obtained from nine drill holes and a set of field samples. The results reveal that most of the drill core comprises an undifferentiated unit, showing minimal geochemical variation. This is typically ∼300 m thick and equates with previous studies performed on samples from exposed rock. In contrast, the deeper section exhibits differentiation and is divided into three layers based on chemical, mineralogical, and textural variations: a quartz monzonite to quartz monzodiorite upper zone (276 m), a quartz monzodioritic middle zone (244 m), and a mainly monzodioritic lower zone (525 m). The mineralogy is defined by plagioclase > orthoclase > clinopyroxene > orthopyroxene, with ubiquitous amphibole and biotite and olivine locally developed in the lower zone and below. Our results reveal that the thicker section of the impact melt sheet has undergone fractional crystallization. Differentiation of parts of the Manicouagan impact melt indicates that lunar impact melt samples possessing different chemistries, previously considered to be derived from distinct impact basins, may be related via the fractionation of common, much smaller diameter impact structures.
