1. Corneal Segmentation Analysis Increases Glaucoma Diagnostic Ability of Optic Nerve Head Examination, Heidelberg Retina Tomograph’s Moorfield’s Regression Analysis, and Glaucoma Probability Score

Abstract: Purpose. To study whether a corneal thickness segmentation model, consisting in a central circular zone of 1 mm radius centered at the corneal apex (zone I) and five concentric rings of 1 mm width (moving outwards: zones II to VI), could boost the diagnostic accuracy of Heidelberg Retina Tomograph’s (HRT’s) MRA and GPS. Material and Methods. Cross-sectional study. 121 healthy volunteers and 125 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Six binary multivariate logistic regression models were constructed (MOD-A1, MOD-A2, MOD-B1, MOD-B2, MOD-C1, and MOD-C2). The dependent variable was the presence of glaucoma. In MOD-A1, the predictor was the result (presence of glaucoma) of the analysis of the stereophotography of the optic nerve head (ONH). In MOD-B1 and MOD-C1, the predictor was the result of the MRA and GPS, respectively. In MOD-B2 and MOD-C2, the predictors were the same along with corneal variables: central, overall, and zones I to VI thicknesses. This scheme was reproduced for model MOD-A2 (stereophotography along with corneal variables). Models were compared using the area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC). Results. MOD-A1-AUC: 0.771; MOD-A2-AUC: 0.88; MOD-B1-AUC: 0.736; MOD-B2-AUC: 0.845; MOD-C1-AUC: 0.712; MOD-C2-AUC: 0.838. Conclusion. Corneal thickness variables enhance ONH assessment and HRT’s MRA and GPS diagnostic capacity.

Abstract: AIMS & OBJECTIVES: Myocarditis caused by SARSCoV2 is one of the causes of death in this pandemic, mainly due to arrhythmias, leading to heart failure and cardiogenic shock. The use of ECMO is one strategy as a bridge to treatment. Our objective is to describe the case of a patient with arrhythmias secondary to COVID-19 and the strategies used. METHODS: Fourteen years old male started with a retrosternal burning pain, palpitations and dyspnea, was admitted to the emergency department. An electrocardiographic trace was taken showing ventricular tachycardia with hemodynamic compromise, synchronized cardioversion was performed. Management with amiodarone, metoprolol and lidocaine is added. It was decided to enter therapeutic catheterization for ablation. Due to refractoriness to treatment, it is left with infusion of amiodarone, lidocaine and esmolol. Evolves into cardiogenic shock, requiring aminergic management with epinephrine, vasopressin, milrinone and levosimendan infusion. RESULTS: It was decided to start with extracorporeal membrane support as a management for arrhythmia refractory to pharmacological treatment. Required for 80 hours. Myocarditis is suspected, and PCR test for SARS-CoV2 is requested, which is obtained as positive. Continuing with the presence of rhythm alterations when attempting to withdraw drug management, it was decided to enter the hemodynamic room to perform ablation again, which was performed successfully. CONCLUSIONS: Arrhythmias secondary to COVID-19 have been described in adult patients. However, the manifestations of this infection in pediatric patients differ in several aspects, so it is important to study this pathology as a probable manifestation of great impact on the survival of the pediatric patient.

Abstract: Two new compounds, pycnanthuquinone A (1) and pycnanthuquinone B (2), were isolated from leaves and stems of the African plant, Pycnanthus angolensis (Welw.) Warb (Myristicaceae), by bioassay-guided fractionation of an ethanolic extract using a diabetic mouse model. Pycnanthuquinones A and B are the first representatives of a novel terpenoid-type quinone skeleton, and both compounds possess significant antihyperglycemic activity.

Abstract: Evidence has been published that a wide array of plant-derived active principles, representing numerous classes of chemical compounds, demonstrate activity consistent with their possible use in the treatment of patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Despite these interesting observations, to date, metformin is the only ethical drug approved for treatment of Type 2 DM derived from a medicinal plant. Why is this so, given the fact that higher plants are such a potential source of new drugs? The answer to this rhetorical question may lie in the reliance of most pharmaceutical companies on random, in vitro, mechanism-based, high throughput screening in the initial phases of plant drug research. In this article we describe an alternative pathway to discovery of drugs for the treatment of Type 2 DM: on based on an ethnomedical approach, involving ethnobotany and traditional medicine. In particular, we present evidence that cryptolepine, an indoloquinolone alkaloid isolated from Cryptolepis sanguinolenta, significantly lowers glucose when given orally to a mouse model of diabetes. The antihyperglycaemic effect of cryptolepine leads to a significant decline in plasma insulin concentration, associated with evidence of an enhancement in insulin-mediated glucose disposal. Finally, cryptolepine increases glucose uptake by 3T3-L1 cells. These data permit us to conclude that an ethnobotanical approach to drug discovery can identify a potentially useful drug for the treatment of Type 2 DM.

Abstract: Using an ethnobotanical approach in combination with in vivo-guided fractionation as a means for lead discovery, cryptolepine was isolated as an antihyperglycemic component of Cryptolepis sanguinolenta. Two syntheses of cryptolepine, including an unambiguous synthesis, are reported. The hydroiodide, hydrochloride, and hydrotrifluoromethanesulfonate (hydrotriflate) salts of cryptolepine were synthesized, and a comparison of their spectral properties and their in vitro activities in a 3T3-L1 glucose transport assay is made. Cryptolepine and its salt forms lower blood glucose in rodent models of type II diabetes. While a number of bioactivities have been reported for cryptolepine, this is the first report that cryptolepine possesses antihyperglycemic properties.

Abstract: Using an ethnomedical-based drug discovery program, two previously unknown compounds (SP-18904 and SP-18905) from Pycnanthus angolensis were isolated that lower glucose concentrations in mouse models of type 2 diabetes. SP-18904 and SP-18905 are terpenoid-type quinones that significantly lowered plasma glucose concentration (p.05) when given orally to either ob/ob or db/db mice, both of which are hyperglycemic and hyperinsulinemic. The antihyperglycemic actions of SP-18904 and SP-18905 were associated with significant decreases in plasma insulin concentrations (p.05), suggesting that both compounds lowered glucose by enhancing insulin-mediated glucose uptake. This was supported by the insulin suppression test in ob/ob mice. Studies in hyperglycemic, insulin-deficient mice and in vitro experiments on 3T3-L1 adipocytes further supported this conclusion. As such, these two terpenoid-type quinones represent a new class of compounds of potential use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract: Indications of a GeV component in the emission from GRBs are known since the EGRET observations during the 1990's and they have been confirmed by the data of the Fermi satellite. These results have, however, shown that our understanding of GRB physics is still unsatisfactory. The new generation of Cherenkov observatories and in particular the MAGIC telescope, allow for the first time the possibility to extend the measurement of GRBs from several tens up to hundreds of GeV energy range. Both leptonic and hadronic processes have been suggested to explain the possible GeV/TeV counterpart of GRBs. Observations with ground-based telescopes of very high energy photons (E>30 GeV) from these sources are going to play a key role in discriminating among the different proposed emission mechanisms, which are barely distinguishable at lower energies. MAGIC telescope observations of the GRB 090102 (z=1.547) field and Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data in the same time interval are analysed to derive upper limits of the GeV/TeV emission. We compare these results to the expected emissions evaluated for different processes in the framework of a relativistic blast wave model for the afterglow. Simultaneous upper limits with Fermi and a Cherenkov telescope have been derived for this GRB observation. The results we obtained are compatible with the expected emission although the difficulties in predicting the HE and VHE emission for the afterglow of this event makes it difficult to draw firmer conclusions. Nonetheless, MAGIC sensitivity in the energy range of overlap with space-based instruments (above about 40 GeV) is about one order of magnitude better with respect to Fermi. This makes evident the constraining power of ground-based observations and shows that the MAGIC telescope has reached the required performance to make possible GRB multiwavelength studies in the very high energy range., 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. 10. Magic Constraints on γ-ray Emission from Cygnus X-3

Abstract: Cygnus X-3 is a microquasar consisting of an accreting compact object orbiting around a Wolf-Rayet star. It has been detected at radio frequencies and up to high-energy gamma rays (above 100 MeV). However, many models also predict a very high energy (VHE) emission (above hundreds of GeV) when the source displays relativistic persistent jets or transient ejections. Therefore, detecting such emission would improve the understanding of the jet physics. The imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope MAGIC observed Cygnus X-3 for about 70 hours between 2006 March and 2009 August in different X-ray/radio spectral states and also during a period of enhanced gamma-ray emission. MAGIC found no evidence for a VHE signal from the direction of the microquasar. An upper limit to the integral flux for energies higher than 250 GeV has been set to 2.2 x 10-12 photons cm-2 s-1 (95% confidence level). This is the best limit so far to the VHE emission from this source. The non-detection of a VHE signal during the period of activity in the high-energy band sheds light on the location of the possible VHE radiation favoring the emission from the innermost region of the jets, where absorption is significant. Abstract: We report on the detection with the MAGIC telescopes of very high energy gamma-rays from IC 310, a head-tail radio galaxy in the Perseus galaxy cluster, observed during the interval November 2008 to February 2010. The Fermi satellite has also detected this galaxy. The source is detected by MAGIC at a high statistical significance of 7.6sigma in 20.6 hr of stereo data. The observed spectral energy distribution is flat with a differential spectral index of -2.00 \pm 0.14. The mean flux above 300 GeV, between October 2009 and February 2010, (3.1 \pm 0.5)x10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}, corresponds to (2.5 \pm 0.4)% of Crab Nebula units. Only an upper limit, of 1.9% of Crab Nebula units above 300 GeV, was obtained with the 2008 data. This, together with strong hints (>3sigma) of flares in the middle of October and November 2009, implies that the emission is variable. The MAGIC results favour a scenario with the very high energy emission originating from the inner jet close to the central engine. More complicated models than a simple one-zone SSC scenario, e.g. multi-zone SSC, external Compton or hadronic, may be required to explain the very flat spectrum and its extension over more than three orders of magnitude in energy., 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJL

Abstract: Context: Part of the very high energy $��$-ray radiation coming from extragalactic sources is absorbed through the pair production process on the extragalactic background light photons. Extragalactic magnetic fields alter the trajectories of these cascade pairs and, in turn, convert cosmic background photons to gamma-ray energies by inverse Compton scattering. These secondary photons can form an extended halo around bright VHE sources. Aims: We searched for an extended emission around the bright blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 using the MAGIC telescope data. Methods: If extended emission is present, the angular distribution of reconstructed gamma-ray arrival directions around the source is broader than for a point-like source. In the analysis of a few tens of hours of observational data taken from Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 we used a newly developed method that provides better angular resolution. This method is based on the usage of multidimensional decision trees. Comparing the measured shapes of angular distributions with those expected from a point-like source one can detect or constrain possible extended emission around the source. We also studied the influence of different types of systematic errors on the shape of the distribution of reconstructed gamma-ray arrival directions for a point source. Results: We present upper limits for an extended emission calculated for both sources for various source extensions and emission profiles. We discuss possible constraints on the extragalactic magnetic fields strength. We obtain upper limits on the extended emission around the Mrk~421 (Mrk~501) on the level of < 5% (< 4%) of the Crab Nebula flux above the energy threshold of 300 GeV. Using these results we discuss possible constraints on the extragalactic magnetic fields strength around a few times $10^{-15}$~G., 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In this paper we determine its spectral energy distribution through simultaneous multi-frequency data to study its emission processes. An extensive campaign was carried out between March and April 2008, where optical, X-ray, high-energy (HE) γ-ray, and very-high-energy (VHE) γ-ray data were obtained with the KVA, Abastumani, REM, RossiXTE/ASM, AGILE and MAGIC telescopes, respectively. Abstract: 10 páginas, 7 figuras, 6 tablas.-- El Pdf del artículo es la versión pre-print: arXiv:1001.1291.-- MAGIC Collaboration: et al., [Context]: Wide-range spectral coverage of blazar-type active galactic nuclei is of paramount importance for understanding the particle acceleration mechanisms assumed to take place in their jets. The Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cerenkov (MAGIC) telescope participated in three multiwavelength (MWL) campaigns, observing the blazar Markarian (Mkn) 421 during the nights of April 28 and 29, 2006, and June 14, 2006. [Aims]: We analyzed the corresponding MAGIC very-high energy observations during 9 nights from April 22 to 30, 2006 and on June 14, 2006. We inferred light curves with sub-day resolution and night-by-night energy spectra. [Methods]: MAGIC detects γ-rays by observing extended air showers in the atmosphere. The obtained air-shower images were analyzed using the standard MAGIC analysis chain. [Results]: A strong γ-ray signal was detected from Mkn 421 on all observation nights. The flux (E > 250 GeV) varied on night-by-night basis between (0.92±0.11) × 10-10 cm-2 s-1 (0.57 Crab units) and (3.21±0.15) × 10-10 cm-2 s-1 (2.0 Crab units) in April 2006. There is a clear indication for intra-night variability with a doubling time of 36± min on the night of April 29, 2006, establishing once more rapid flux variability for this object. For all individual nights γ-ray spectra could be inferred, with power-law indices ranging from 1.66 to 2.47. We did not find statistically significant correlations between the spectral index and the flux state for individual nights. During the June 2006 campaign, a flux substantially lower than the one measured by the Whipple 10-m telescope four days later was found. Using a log-parabolic power law fit we deduced for some data sets the location of the spectral peak in the very-high energy regime. Our results confirm the indications of rising peak energy with increasing flux, as expected in leptonic acceleration models., The support of the German BMBF and MPG, the Italian INFN and Spanish MICINN is gratefully acknowledged. Abstract: The Perseus galaxy cluster was observed by the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope for a total effective time of 24.4 hr during 2008 November and December. The resulting upper limits on the gamma-ray emission above 100 GeV are in the range of 4.6 to 7.5 x 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1} for spectral indices from -1.5 to -2.5, thereby constraining the emission produced by cosmic rays, dark matter annihilations, and the central radio galaxy NGC1275. Results are compatible with cosmological cluster simulations for the cosmic-ray-induced gamma-ray emission, constraining the average cosmic ray-to-thermal pressure to, 15 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ; updated to match the journal final version

Abstract: We report on the results of two coordinated multiwavelength campaigns that focused on the blazar Markarian 421 during its 2006 and 2008 outbursts. These campaigns obtained UV and X-ray data using the XMM-Newton satellite, while the gamma-ray data were obtained utilizing three imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes, the Whipple 10m telescope and VERITAS, both based in Arizona, as well as the MAGIC telescope, based on La Palma in the Canary Islands. The coordinated effort between the gamma-ray groups allowed for truly simultaneous data in UV/X-ray/gamma-ray wavelengths during a significant portion of the XMM-Newton observations. This simultaneous coverage allowed for a reliable search for correlations between UV, X-ray and gamma-ray variability over the course of the observations. Abstract: The MAGIC collaboration reports the detection of the blazar S5 0716+714 z=0.31+-0.08 in very high energy gamma-rays. The observations were performed in November 2007 and in April 2008, and were triggered by the KVA telescope due to the high optical state of the object. An overall significance of the signal accounts to S =5.8sigma for 13.1 hours of data. Most of the signal S = 6.9sigma comes from the April 2008 data sample during a higher optical state of the object suggesting a possible correlation between the VHE gamma-ray and optical emissions. The differential energy spectrum of the 2008 data sample follows a power law with a photon index of Gamma = 3.45+-0.54_(stat)+-0.2_(syst), and the integral flux above 400GeV is at the level of 7.5+-2.2_(stat)+-2.3_(syst)*10^-12 cm^-2 s^-1 corresponding to a 9% Crab Nebula flux. Modeling of the broad band spectral energy distribution indicates that a structured jet model appears to be more promising in describing the available data than a simple one zone synchrotron self-Compton model., accepted to ApJL

Abstract: Based on MAGIC observations from June and July 2007, we have obtained an integral upper limit to the VHE energy emission of the globular cluster M13 of $F(E>200 \textrm{GeV})140 \textrm{GeV}$. Those limits allow us to constrain the population of millisecond pulsars within M13 and to test models for acceleration of leptons inside their magnetospheres and surrounding. We conclude that in M13 either millisecond pulsars are fewer than expected or they accelerate leptons less efficiently than predicted.

Abstract: The MAGIC collaboration has recently reported the discovery of gamma-ray emission from the binary system LS I +61 degrees 303 in the TeV energy region. Here we present new observational results on this source in the energy range between 300 GeV and 3 TeV. In total, 112 hr of data were taken between 2006 September and December covering four orbital cycles of this object. This large amount of data allowed us to produce an integral flux light curve covering for the first time all orbital phases of LS I +61 degrees 303. In addition, we also obtained a differential energy spectrum for two orbital phase bins covering the phase range 0.5 < phi < 0.6 and 0.6 < phi < 0.7. The photon index in the two phase bins is consistent within the errors with an average index Gamma = 2.6 +/- 0.2(stat) +/- 0.2(sys). LS I +61 degrees 303 was found to be variable at TeV energies on timescales of days. These new MAGIC measurements allowed us to search for intranight variability of the very high energy emission; however, no evidence for flux variability on timescales down to 30 min was found. To test for possible periodic structures in the light curve, we apply the formalism developed by Lomb and Scargle to the LS I +61 degrees 303 data taken in 2005 and 2006. We found the LS I +61 degrees 303 data set to be periodic with a period of (26.8 +/- 0.2) days (with a post-trial chance probability of 10(-7)), close to the orbital period.

Abstract: The accretion of matter onto a massive black hole is believed to feed the relativistic plasma jets found in many active galactic nuclei (AGN). Although some AGN accelerate particles to energies exceeding 10^12 electron Volts (eV) and are bright sources of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, it is not yet known where the VHE emission originates. Here we report on radio and VHE observations of the radio galaxy M87, revealing a period of extremely strong VHE gamma-ray flares accompanied by a strong increase of the radio flux from its nucleus. Abstract: Suzaku observations of the blazar OJ 287 were performed in 2007 April 10--13 and November 7--9. They correspond to a quiescent and a flaring state, respectively. The X-ray spectra can be well described with single power-law models in both exposures. The derived X-ray photon index and the flux density at 1 keV were found to be Gamma = 1.65 +- 0.02 and S_{1 keV} = 215 +- 5 nJy, in the quiescent state. In the flaring state, the source exhibited a harder X-ray spectrum (Gamma = 1.50 +- 0.01) with a nearly doubled X-ray flux density S_{1 keV} = 404^{+6}_{-5} nJy. Moreover, significant hard X-ray signals were detected up to ~ 27 keV. In cooperation with the Suzaku, simultaneous radio, optical, and very-high-energy gamma-ray observations were performed with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array, the KANATA telescope, and the MAGIC telescope, respectively. The radio and optical fluxes in the flaring state (3.04 +- 0.46 Jy and 8.93 +- 0.05 mJy at 86.75 Hz and in the V-band, respectively) were found to be higher by a factor of 2--3 than those in the quiescent state (1.73 +- 0.26 Jy and 3.03 +- 0.01 mJy at 86.75 Hz and in the V-band, respectively). No notable gamma-ray events were detected in either observation. The spectral energy distribution indicated that the X-ray spectrum was dominated by inverse Compton radiation in both observations, while synchrotron radiation exhibited a spectral cutoff around the optical frequency. Furthermore, no significant difference in the synchrotron cutoff frequency was found between the quiescent and flaring states. According to a simple synchrotron self-Compton model, the change of the spectral energy distribution is due to an increase in the energy density of electrons with small changes of both the magnetic field strength and the maximum Lorentz factor of electrons., 22 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in PASJ

Abstract: The Cherenkov light flashes produced by Extensive Air Showers are very short in time. A high bandwidth and fast digitizing readout, therefore, can minimize the influence of the background from the light of the night sky, and improve the performance in Cherenkov telescopes. The time structure of the Cherenkov image can further be used in single-dish Cherenkov telescopes as an additional parameter to reduce the background from unwanted hadronic showers. A description of an analysis method which makes use of the time information and the subsequent improvement on the performance of the MAGIC telescope (especially after the upgrade with an ultra fast 2 GSamples/s digitization system in February 2007) will be presented. The use of timing information in the analysis of the new MAGIC data reduces the background by a factor two, which in turn results in an enhancement of about a factor 1.4 of the flux sensitivity to point-like sources, as tested on observations of the Crab Nebula., 27 pages, 11 figures, accepted by Astroparticle Physics

Abstract: We present the result of the observation of the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Willman 1 performed with the 17 m MAGIC telescope during 15.5 hr between March and May 2008. No significant $\gamma$-ray emission was found. We derived upper limits of the order of $10^{-12}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ on the integral flux above 100 GeV, which we compare with predictions from several of the established neutralino benchmark models in the mSUGRA parameter space. The neutralino annihilation spectra are defined after including the recently quantified contribution of internal bremsstrahlung from the virtual sparticles that mediate the annihilation. Flux boost factors of three orders of magnitude are required even in the most optimistic scenario to match our upper limits. However, uncertainties in the dark matter intrinsic and extrinsic properties (e.g., presence of substructures, Sommerfeld effect) may significantly reduce this gap., Comment: (6 pages, updated to match journal version and reference, Fig. 2 corrected)

Abstract: M87 is the only known non blazar radio galaxy to emit very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays. During a monitoring program of M87, a rapid flare in VHE gamma-rays was detected by the MAGIC telescope in early 2008. The flux was found to be variable above 350 GeV on a timescale as short as 1 day at a significance level of $5.6\sigma$. The highest measured flux reached 15% of the Crab Nebula flux. We observed several substantial changes of the flux level during the 13 day observing period. The flux at lower energies (150 -- 350 GeV), instead, is compatible with being constant. The energy spectrum can be described by a power law with a photon index of $2.30 \pm 0.11_\mathrm{stat} \pm 0.20_\mathrm{syst}$. The observed day-scale flux variability at VHE prefers the M87 core as source of the emission and implies that either the emission region is very compact (just a few Schwarzschild radii) or the Doppler factor of the emitting blob is rather large in the case of a non expanding emission region., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, small changes to fit the ApJL version

Abstract: The MAGIC telescope observed the region around the distant blazar 3C 66A for 54.2 h in 2007 August-December. The observations resulted in the discovery of a gamma-ray source at energies above 150 GeV centered at celestial coordinates RA=2h23m12s and DEC=43deg0.7' (MAGIC J0223+430), coinciding with the nearby radio galaxy 3C 66B. A possible association of the excess with the blazar 3C 66A is discussed. The energy spectrum of MAGIC J0223+430 follows a power law with a normalization of (1.7+-0.3_(stat)+-0.6_(syst)) 10^(-11) TeV^(-1)cm^(-2)s^(-1) at 300 GeV and a photon index Gamma=-3.10+-0.31_(stat)+-0.2_(syst). Abstract: High-energy gamma-ray emission is theoretically expected to arise in tight binary star systems (with high mass loss and high velocity winds), although the evidence of this relationship has proven to be elusive so far. Here we present the first bounds on this putative emission from isolated Wolf-Rayet (WR) star binaries, WR 147 and WR 146, obtained from observations with the MAGIC telescope., (Authors are the MAGIC Collaboration.) Abstract: One fundamental question about pulsars concerns the mechanism of their pulsed electromagnetic emission. Measuring the high-end region of a pulsar's spectrum would shed light on this question. By developing a new electronic trigger, we lowered the threshold of the Major Atmospheric gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope to 25 GeV. In this configuration, we detected pulsed gamma-rays from the Crab pulsar that were greater than 25 GeV, revealing a relatively high cutoff energy in the phase-averaged spectrum. This indicates that the emission occurs far out in the magnetosphere, hence excluding the polar-cap scenario as a possible explanation of our measurement. The high cutoff energy also challenges the slot-gap scenario., Comment: Slight modification of the analysis: Fitting a more general function to the combined data set of COMPTEL, EGRET and MAGIC. Final result and conclusion is unchanged
