On September 24, 2023, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission returned pristine carbonaceous material from asteroid Bennu. One key aspect required to understand this returned material is to establish its bulk chemical composition. This is primarily due to each chondrite group having a distinct elemental composition, which is important both as a classification tool and for establishing the connections between the different chondrite groups. As the carbonaceous and non-carbonaceous chondrites are thought to have formed in the inner and outer protoplanetary disk, respectively, measuring the bulk elemental composition of Bennu material will help test the mission hypothesis that “Bennu's parent body formed beyond the snow line by accretion of material in the protoplanetary disk”. In addition, two further mission hypotheses — paraphrased as Bennu’s bulk elemental composition reflects that of its parent asteroid and is similar to the composition of the Sun and Bennu’s dominant lithologies are comparable in composition to the most aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrites — can be directly tested by bulk elemental analyses. Elemental analyses were undertaken on sample OREX-803015-0, a 20.66 mg aggregate sourced from inside the sample collector. All analyses were conducted using an iCAP Q ICP-MS. Overall, all 54 elements analyzed for the Bennu aggregate sample show similar abundances to those of the average CI chondrite, and thus the solar photosphere composition and some of the most aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrites. The elemental data also show that Bennu is indeed a carbonaceous asteroid that formed beyond the snow line by accretion of material in the protoplanetary disk. This Bennu aggregate sample appears similar in elemental composition to samples of asteroid Ryugu, yet without the small refractory element enrichments seen in Ryugu.

On September 24, 2023, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission delivered to Earth ~121 g of pristine carbonaceous regolith from asteroid Bennu. A first series of mineralogical observations and chemical/isotopic analyses of Bennu aggregate samples (fine to coarse particles up to a few mm) revealed that this material resembles the most chemically primitive chondrites and the samples returned by the JAXA’s Hayabusa2 mission from the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu. Laboratory studies have confirmed the story gleaned from the spacecraft encounter that Bennu’s rock fragments underwent extensive aqueous alteration and are predominantly composed of hydrated minerals (serpentine, smectite) and other secondary minerals (e.g., magnetite, carbonates). The secondary phases were likely formed under the presence of liquid water on Bennu’s parent asteroid. The isotopic compositions of hydrous minerals and secondary phases can increase our understanding of the source and distribution of water and volatile elements in the protoplanetary disk [e.g., 5-8]. However, direct estimates of the hydrogen isotopic ratios (D/H) in hydrous minerals cannot be obtained easily in primitive rocks due to the difficulty in estimating the organic matter (OM) contribution to the whole H budget. In order to obtain hints on the initial constituents of Bennu’s parent asteroid and to test if Bennu's parent asteroid have formed beyond the snow line (hypothesis 4 of [9]), we measured the D/H and C/H ratios in chondritic matrices by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and obtain information on the D/H ratio of water retained in the hydrated minerals. The method also gives clues on the hydrogen isotope variability among different Bennu rock fragments made available for measurement.

Carbonaceous meteorites are derived from asteroids, although specific parent bodies are generally unknown. However, on September 24, 2023, NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission delivered regolith from the carbonaceous B-type asteroid (101955) Bennu, enabling coordinated laboratory analysis of pristine samples, with a well characterized geological context, from an asteroid of known provenance. One of primary mission goals [1] was the identification and characterization of primordial organic matter present in the returned samples. We report results from the coordinated analyses of Bennu samples using UV fluorescence, two-step laser mass spectrometry (μ-L2MS) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX).

The OSIRIS-REx sample return mission visited the B-type asteroid Bennu and delivered 121.6 gof pristine material to Earth in September 2023. Genetic links between this pristine material and different meteorite groups can be determined using nucleosynthetic isotope variations. These variations reflect the heterogeneous distribution of isotopically distinct dust from different stellar environments within the protoplanetary disk. They can therefore be used to constrain different formation locations of parent asteroids [e.g., 1]. In addition, isotope variations are powerful tracers to establish the nucleosynthetic heritage of returned samples [e.g., 2] and to evaluate mixing and reservoir formation within the disk. Here we present nucleosynthetic Ti and Fe isotope data for samples from Bennu and several carbonaceous chondrites. We also report the Ti isotope composition of hand-picked matrix fractions from CR and CV meteorites.

Preliminary analyses of regolith samples from asteroid Bennu show high bulk carbon abundances (~4.7 wt.%). The organic matter is readily apparent in scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and NanoSIMS observations. A major objective of the OSIRIS-REx mission is to understand the nature and origin of the pre-biotic organic matter inventory in Bennu samples. Here we report on TEM studies of indigenous organic matter in Bennu aggregate samples.

OSIRIS-REx is an asteroid sample return mission that delivered asteroid regolith from Bennu to Earth on 9/24/2023 [1]. Cleanroom monitoring of OSIRIS-REx Curation facilities has been ongoing since 2021 when construction of the OSIRIS-REx lab at Johnson Space Center (JSC) was completed [2]. The monitoring continues inside of the OSIRIS-REx lab in Houston. Monitoring was also conducted on a temporary cleanroom constructed inside a hangar at the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) to initially receive the Sample Return Capsule (SRC) upon its landing there. The following reports on cleanroom monitoring that has taken place in the months leading up to as well as after OSIRIS-REx return. Monitoring techniques used include particle counts, deployment of Si wafer witness plates (Balazs, Inc.) and Al foil witness plates, gas sampling (Balazs, Inc.) and microbiological monitoring. We collected particle counts at both the lab at JSC as well as the temporary cleanroom at UTTR. Particle counts were taken monthly from six locations in the lab at JSC. Particle counts were taken from seven locations at UTTR in July, August, and September. The UTTR cleanroom particle counts were taken daily in the five days leading to OSIRIS-REx return as well as consistently the day of return (every 2 minutes and 15 seconds 7:21 am- 6:27 pm) from one location inside the cleanroom. The particle counts at UTTR consistently stayed well within the ranges of its required ISO 7 equivalent classification (352,000 maximum particles/ m3 ≥ 0.5 μm). Most analysis showed that the particle counts were far below ISO 7 requirements (highest measured count was 61,484 particles/ m3 ≥ 0.5 um). but the elevated instances correlated to exterior hangar doors being open. Particle counts were reduced when keeping exterior hangar doors closed. The particle counts at JSC have stayed consistently within their ISO 5 equivalent classification (3,520 maximum particles/ m3 ≥ 0.5 um). In most instances, the counts are much better except in one instance where the count measured 13,381 particles/ m3 ≥ 0.5 um. The high spike in particle counts in the JSC lab correlated with the air handlers being shut down temporarily the previous day. The particle counts taken in the same location quickly reduced and measured 0 when taken a month later with the air handlers on. We deployed 8-inch semiconductor polished Si wafer witness plates for 24-hour periods inside of the OSIRIS-REx Curation lab at JSC (in July, August, September, and November 2023) and the cleanroom at UTTR (July and September 2023) to test for possible organic and inorganic contaminants. We also deployed these wafers inside of the OSIRIS-REx Touch-and-Go sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) glovebox (where Bennu sample processing occurs) and desiccator (Bennu sample storage) at JSC in August 2023. These samples were all sent to Balazs for analysis via Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (TD-GC-MS) to quantify organic compounds and vapor phase decomposition inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (VPD-ICP-MS) to quantify inorganic contaminants. We collected air samples using an adsorbent tube connected to a pump for six hours (100 mL/minute) inside of both the JSC lab and the UTTR cleanroom. These samples were taken at JSC in July, August, September, November, and December and at UTTR in July and September. Additionally, a sample was taken just outside of the TAGSAM glovebox airlock door in July. These samples were sent to Balazs for analysis of volatile organics in air. Overall, the OSIRIS-REx lab at JSC and cleanroom at UTTR yielded very low organic and inorganic contaminants (similar results to Genesis lab at JSC which is ISO 4 equivalent) except for boron, which is attributed to the borosilicate glass in the fan filter units. We collected monthly surface and air samples inside the JSC lab to monitor potential microbial contamination. We report the recovery rate for each sampling event, which is defined as the number of samples exhibiting bacterial or fungal growth divided by the total number of samples collected. Since the lab was commissioned in 2021 the median recovery rate is 29%. This recovery rate is consistent with other ISO 5 equivalent labs used to curate astromaterials collections. Increases in recovery rate correspond to construction and/or extra activity in the lab. However, increases in recovery rate do not reliably correlate to increases in particle counts, which highlights the need for a dedicated microbial monitoring program for biologically sensitive collections. We sampled the temporary clean room at UTTR in July, August, and September of 2023 to monitor potential microbial contamination. The recovery rate decreased from 80% in August to 29% in September. However, in all instances, the diversity of bacteria and fungi was higher in the UTTR cleanroom than in the JSC lab. We routinely collected more than twenty different organisms from the UTTR cleanroom. In the JSC lab the median diversity is 2 organisms. Based on these results we hypothesize that microbes from UTTR could be transported back to JSC with the Bennu samples. To mitigate this risk, in September of 2023, we implemented additional cleaning procedures in the JSC lab to reduce the bioburden on surfaces that could come into direct contact with hardware used to process Bennu samples. Since adopting these additional cleaning measures, the median recovery rate has decreased to 14%. We did not observe an increase in fungal or bacterial diversity in the lab in the October sampling. Carbonaceous asteroids allow us to study the original materials that formed the planets in the protoplanetary disk. They contain organic matter and (sub-)micrometer-size dust grains, called presolar grains, that condensed in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars and the ejecta of stellar explosions, such as novae and supernovae, before the formation of our Solar System. The isotopically anomalous organics are thought to have formed in the interstellar medium and the early Solar System. Whereas presolar grains provide insight into the building blocks of our Solar System, studying organics can help us understand the origin of life on Earth. These organics might have contributed to ingredients that helped life emerge. The return of samples from asteroid 101955 Bennu by NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission gives us a new opportunity to elucidate the formation mechanism(s) and evolution of organics, as well as the abundance and distribution presolar grains in carbonaceous asteroids. Here, we report on our ongoing work to characterize the isotopic and chemical compositions, microstructure, distribution, and abundance of insoluble organic matter (IOM) and presolar grains in Bennu samples. This work supports hypotheses 2 and 3 of the OSIRIS-REx Sample Analysis Plan.

On September 24, 2023, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission returned a capsule to Earth carrying material from asteroid Bennu. This event was the first time a U.S. mission delivered pristine samples from an asteroid and is the largest asteroid sample return to date. As these samples represent some of the oldest, most primitive, and pristine materials available to us, and which originate from a known and well-studied asteroid, they allow us a rare opportunity to gain a better understanding of the formation and evolution of our solar system. Key to understanding the material returned from asteroid Bennu is establishing its bulk chemical composition. Previous studies have shown that each chondrite group has a distinct elemental composition. For the carbonaceous chondrites specifically, each group exhibits a distinct pattern of moderately and highly volatile elemental depletions, relative to CI chondrites. CI chondrites are considered the most primitive chondrite group and broadly represent the solar photosphere composition. The two most striking features of these depletion patterns is that the moderately volatile element depletions increase with decreasing 50% condensation temperature and then plateau out at abundances that roughly correlate with matrix abundance. Due to these distinctive patterns, bulk elemental composition has become an important classification tool for establishing the different chondrite groups and the connections between them. As such, determining the bulk chemical composition of the Bennu aggregates will help to test two mission hypothesis: “Bennu’s bulk elemental composition reflects that of its main parent asteroid and is similar to the composition of the Sun, with depletions in moderately to highly volatile elements” and “Bennu’s dominant lithologies are comparable in bulk mineralogy, petrology, and composition to the most aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrites”. Furthermore as the carbonaceous and non-carbonaceous chondrites are thought to have likely formed in the inner and outer protoplanetary disk, respectively (e.g., [8]), determining the bulk chemical compositions of the Bennu aggregates will also help test the major mission hypothesis that “Bennu's parent body formed beyond the snow line by accretion of material in the pro-toplanetary disk”. Regarding chondrite formation, observed elemental patterns have been successfully used to model how the mixing of volatile-rich and volatile-poor chondritic components can produce the observed carbonaceous chondrites groups. They have also been significant in investigating how volatilization processes influenced chondrite formation. As such, establishing bulk chemical compositions of the pristine Bennu samples is vital for understanding the asteroid, and solar system formation. To begin this processes, we analyzed the bulk major and trace elemental compositions of Bennu aggregates.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission re-turned material from asteroid Bennu on September 24, 2023, marking the first time a U.S. mission has delivered asteroid samples to Earth, and the largest asteroid sample return to date. Due to the pristine nature of these primitive carbonaceous-rich samples, they allow us a rare opportunity to study our solar system’s formation to a degree not previously possible. Isotopes of moderately volatile elements (MVEs) have been recently developed as robust tracers for tracking different volatilization events within our Solar System. Of the MVEs, K has gained significant interest in recent years due to its ideal chemical and physical properties combined with technique improvements. Due to this, several recent studies have investigated the K isotope systematics within bulk chondrites and found an isotopic dichotomy be-tween the carbonaceous and non-carbonaceous chondrites (Figure 1), likely reflecting their different reservoirs which formed in the inner and outer protoplanetary disk respectively. Furthermore, systematic K isotope variations across the different carbonaceous chondrite groups and correlations with mass independent isotope systems such as Cr, Ti, and Ni, have also been observed. As a result, establishing the K isotope composition of bulk Bennu can be used to test the mission hypothesis that “Bennu’s parent asteroid accreted in the outer protoplanetary disk, beyond Jupiter, as recorded by distinct isotopic anomalies in a variety of elements”. In addition to early solar system processes, K isotopes can also be fractionated by space weathering as shown by comparisons between mature and immature lunar regolith. The degree of K isotope fractionation caused by space weathering correlates with the regolith maturity index and is an order of magnitude larger than what is observed in bulk meteorite samples which have not undergone strong space weathering processes. As such, the K isotope systematics of Bennu samples could provide an independent assessment of regolith maturity of the asteroid surface, helping to directly test the mission hypothesis that “Space weathering changed the chemistry and mineralogy of optically active surfaces”. In order to test both this hypothesis, and the hypothesis relating to Bennu’s accretion location, we aim to conduct high-precision K isotope analysis on bulk Bennu aggregates.

Material from the B-type carbonaceous asteroid (101955) Bennu was returned on September 24, 2023, by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission. The mission brought back the largest sample of pristine primordial asteroidal material, largely free from the challenges of terrestrial contamination that are common in meteorite studies. The Bennu sample thus provides a unique source of material to investigate the abundance and isotopic signatures of C and N. The specific hypotheses tested by these analyses are whether Bennu contains macromolecular material and/or presolar grains similar to the populations found in CI and CM chondrites and recently returned samples from Ryugu.

On September 24, 2023, the OSIRIS-REx Sample Return Capsule (SRC) entered Earth’s atmosphere and landed in the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR). Preliminary examination of the returned Bennu sample has confirmed that OSIRIS-REx sample mass exceeds the mission requirement of 60 g of material. The sample consists of particles that range from a few centimeters to microscopic fines. During the SRC’s entry, descent, and landing (EDL) sequence, it may have experienced (i) peak decelerations of 10s of g (ii) tumbling, and (iii) touchdown at approximately 10 m/s, which could have induced physical modification of the sample. In addition, the act of sampling may have altered or biased the physical properties of the collected materials. Here, we investigate the likelihood and extent of physical modification of the sample between collection and return using observations and modeling. This work addresses the mission’s hypothesis 12, which concerns, in part, the modification of the sample during collection and Earth entry.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft delivered a sample from the carbonaceous asteroid (101955) Bennu to Earth on September 24, 2023. Since Bennu presumably accreted in the outer protoplanetary disk, beyond Jupiter’s orbit, the collected material is expected to be rich in highly volatile elements such as H, C, N, and noble gases—similar to Ivuna-type (CI) carbonaceous chondrites and material from asteroid (162173) Ryugu returned by JAXA’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft. This type of material may have contributed to the volatile inventory of Earth and the other terrestrial planets. Bulk CI chondrites record a narrow range of δ15N values (i.e., the permil difference from the atmospheric 15N/14N ratio), averaging between +42 and 49‰. In contrast, recent analyses at CRPG’s noble gas facility revealed that two pelletized Ryugu samples have lower δ15N values of +18.1 ± 0.9‰ and +19.5 ± 0.9‰. Together with the low measured N abundances, this observation suggests that Ryugu has lost a 15N-rich, labile organic phase due to pervasive aqueous alteration. Subsequent high-resolution step-heating analyses of an additional Ryugu particle demonstrated that the δ15N value varies significantly during successive extraction steps (between +1.0 ± 1.0‰ and 65.8 ± 1.1‰); the variable N isotopic composition points to the presence of several isotopically distinct N-carrier phases in CI-type material. Here, we report preliminary N-Ne-Ar results obtained for individual particles from an aggregate Bennu sample using the Noblesse-HR (Nu Instruments) noble gas mass spectrometer at CRPG’s noble gas facility. In a companion abstract, we will present the noble gas (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) characteristics of other aggregate particles determined with a HELIX MC Plus. Whereas the abundance and isotopic composition of noble gases permit detection of various presolar phases and the so-called phase Q, as well as quantification of solar wind–derived and cosmogenic components, the abundance and isotopic composition of N are expected to provide further insights into the origin and evolution of N-bearing phases in carbonaceous asteroids.

Observations by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft of asteroid Bennu revealed evidence that this small rubble-pile asteroid experiences several active surface processes that likely control its recent surface exposure history. In October 2020, the spacecraft collected a surface sample from a relatively young ~20 m diameter crater (Hokioi) on asteroid Bennu, and the sample was successfully delivered to Earth on September 24, 2023. Based on the population of craters >50 m diameter, Bennu’s surface is 0.1–1 Ga old, but the old surface is affected by recent processes including smaller meteoroid impacts, mass movement, and particle ejections. The sampling location within Hokioi crater was selected based on its relatively flat surface devoid of large boulders, but the crater floor is also believed to be one of the youngest surfaces on asteroid Bennu, with an age of <100 kyr. As the crater is ~2 m deep, the samples that were collected by OSIRIS-REx may have been relatively shielded from cosmic rays during most of its recent history. This scenario is different from the samples that were collected by Hayabusa2 from asteroid Ryugu, where cosmogenic noble gas and radionuclides indicate cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) ages of ~5 Myr near the surface. Our goal is to understand the recent exposure history of surface samples of asteroid Bennu utilizing radionuclides (10Be, 26Al, 36Cl, 41Ca) produced by both galactic (GCR) and solar (SCR) cosmic rays. With half- lives ranging from 0.1 to 1.36 million years (Myr), the concentrations of these cosmogenic nuclides provide information on the duration and exposure conditions (irradiation depth) of these samples on a timescale of a few Myr. This work will test one of the OSIRIS-REx mission’s driving hypotheses about asteroid Bennu’s recent evolution: that Hokioi crater is part of a population of small (25 m) spectrally red craters on Bennu that are less than 0.1 Myr old.

On September 24, 2023, NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission returned >70 g of material from asteroid Bennu to Earth. The Sample Return Capsule was opened at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), and a spillover sample was collected from the avionics deck to perform quick-look (QL) analyses. In addition to providing a reconnaissance investigation of its mineralogy, the sample was also examined for evidence of surface exposure on asteroid Bennu by identifying signatures of space weathering. Space weathering changes the morphology, microstructure, and chemistry of regolith on the surfaces of airless bodies. Driven by micrometeoroid bombardment and solar wind irradiation, our understanding of how space weathering modifies particles on the surfaces of carbonaceous asteroids is still developing. To bolster the interpretation of remote sensing data and to further address driving Hypothesis 10, we must investigate the nanoscale structural and chemical changes in returned samples from Bennu to understand how space weathering affects carbonaceous surface materials. Here we explore evidence for solar wind irradiation in QL samples from asteroid Bennu.

Asteroid (101955) Bennu is a B-type asteroid and a prime candidate for investigating the remnants of planet formation and enhancing our understanding of potential sources of crucial bio-essential elements for the early Earth. Remote observations of the surface of Bennu unveiled a terrain of boulders primarily composed of hydrated phyllosilicates, organic molecules, and carbonates. The hydrated nature of Bennu, the abundance of carbonates, and the presence of cm-scale carbonate veins provide clues to the nature of the building blocks of Bennu’s parent body and to its complex geological history. Here we present the first mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic results of analysis of phosphates in samples returned from Bennu by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission. We seek to test the hypothesis that heating of Bennu’s parent asteroid resulted in hydrothermal alteration in which melted ice reacted with the initial constituents.

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft returned regolith samples from asteroid Bennu and an initial sample was allocated for quick-look (QL) analyses. These QL particles were recovered from the avionics deck of the sample canister and were used to test the hypothesis that this dust is broadly representative of the bulk sample. The QL sample analyses showed that the materials are dominated by hydrated silicates, sulfides, magnetite, phosphates, and abundant organic matter, in addition to other minor/trace phases. Here we report our preliminary transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations for the nanoscale mineralogy of Bennu samples.

The OSIRIS-REx mission sampled material from the B-type asteroid Bennu and delivered the sample to Earth on 24 September 2023. Here we present initial xenon isotopic analysis of individual intermediate particles of Bennu material collected by the OSIRIS-REx mission. Noble gases are key tracers of Solar System evolution. Xenon is particularly useful among the noble gases because its nine isotopes allow multiple contributing sources to be unambiguously identified. The sun, asteroids (as measured in meteorites), and comets (measured in the coma of comet 67P) have distinct xenon isotopic signatures reflecting different mixtures of nucleosynthetic components. In addition, 129I, 238U, and 244Pu decay with different half-lives, producing characteristic xenon signatures. Exposure of samples containing light rare earth elements and barium to cosmic rays produces xenon from spallation and secondary neutron capture reaction. Noble gas analyses help address several of the driving hypotheses of the mission [9]. Particle-by-particle analysis can elucidate the diversity of material present and reveal distinct noble gas compositions, including the potential to detect presolar or cometary noble gas signatures on a small scale. The isotopic signature provides a fingerprint that can be used to constrain the sources of volatiles in planetary reservoirs and combined with other information (e.g. mineralogy and petrology of the material analyses) contributes to our understanding of the initial constituents, formation, and history of Bennu and its parent asteroid.

Understanding the mechanical and elastic properties of rocks comprising asteroids is be-coming of greater practical importance as more spacecraft interact with them (e.g. OSIRIS-REx, Hayabusa2, DART). However, knowledge of asteroid lithologies’ physical properties is limited due to sample paucity and the resulting challenges that come with working with small samples. Measuring seismic velocities is one way to directly and indirectly (through relation-ships established with analog materials) explore elastic and strength properties, respectively, while minimizing use of available material. While sample preparation requires cutting, the seismic measurements are non-destructive.

On 24 September 2023, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft delivered to Earth material collected from the surface of the B-type asteroid Bennu. During its ~2.5-year encounter with the asteroid, OSIRIS-REx made many important discoveries, including establishing its extremely primitive chemical composition, the presence of at least two lithologies, and evidence of fluid flow on its parent asteroid. One of the driving hypotheses of the Sample Analysis Plan is that Bennu’s dominant lithologies are comparable to the most aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrites. Oxygen three-isotope analysis is a powerful tool for defining the relationship between different meteorite groups and can be used to understand the nature of the returned Bennu samples. The O isotope signatures reflect the materials that parent asteroids accreted from and the geological processes that operated during asteroidal evolution. Aggregate samples of particles (typically <500 μm) likely sampled many different larger stones and boulders, and their composition may therefore represent the average composition of Bennu. Fractionation of the sample, e.g. comparison of aliquots of finer material with coarser particles within the aggregate samples, offers the opportunity to identify different isotopic reservoirs within the returned material. The average O isotope composition will also provide a baseline from which to identify and characterize any exogenous clasts present in the sample.

This study analyzed samples of the Murchison and Sutter’s Mill carbonaceous chondrite meteorites in support of the future analysis of samples returned from the asteroid (10155) Bennu by the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer) mission. Focusing specifically on the insoluble organic matter (IOM), this study establishes that a total of 1.3 g of bulk sample from a single chondritic meteorite is sufficient to obtain a wide range of cosmochemical information, including light element analysis (H, C, and N), isotopic analysis (D/H, 13C/12C, and 15N/14N), and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy for major elemental abundances. IOM isolated from the bulk meteorite samples was analyzed by light element and isotopic analysis as described above, 1H and 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and complete noble gas analyses (abundances and isotopes). The samples studied included a pair from Murchison (CM2), one of which had been irradiated with high-energy X-rays in the course of computed tomographic imaging. No differences between the irradiated and non-irradiated Murchison samples were observed in the many different chemical and spectroscopic analyses, indicating that any X-ray–derived sample damage is below levels of detection. Elemental, isotopic, and molecular spectroscopic data derived from IOM isolated from the Sutter’s Mill sample reveals evidence that this meteorite falls into the class of heated CM chondrites.

The sample of regolith collected from asteroid Bennu by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will land in Utah on September 24, 2023. A 100-mg aliquot of fine Bennu dust adhering to the internal surfaces of the sample return capsule and associated hardware will be collected by curation staff during disassembly and analyzed immediately by members of the sample analysis team in a “Quick-Look” (Q-L) procedure. The Q-L objectives are (1) to provide images for release to the public to inform on the nature of the returned sample, and (2) to perform a reconnaissance investigation of the mineralogic characteristics of the returned material for science purposes. We will determine the minerals that occur in the dust, assess their diversity, and determine relative abundances at the >5% level using a combination of optical microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Here we describe the procedures and techniques developed for the Q-L analyses using analog samples analyzed by SEM equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). To test these techniques, we have applied them to several samples, including powders of the Murchison (Fig. 1) and Orgueil meteorites, as well as simulant samples prepared by the mission.

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft collected samples from the surface of the carbonaceous near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu, and brought them to Earth. The samples were expected to contain organic molecules, which record processes that occurred in the early Solar System. We analyzed organic molecules extracted from the Ryugu surface samples. We identify a variety of molecules containing the atoms CHNOS, formed by methylation, hydration, hydroxylation, and sulfurization reactions. Amino acids, aliphatic amines, carboxylic acids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrogen-heterocyclic compounds were detected, with properties consistent with an abiotic origin. These compounds likely arose from aqueous reaction on Ryugu’s parent body and are similar to organics in Ivuna-type meteorites. These molecules can survive on the surfaces of asteroids and be transported throughout the Solar System.

Orbital spectra of asteroid (101955) Bennu collected by NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS–REx) spacecraft have identified ungrouped C, CI, and CM meteorites having petrologic types 1, 1/2, and 2 as the best mineralogical analogues to Bennu to date. Here we present spectral evidence that Grosvenor Mountains (GRO) 95577, a CR1, is a better analogue for Bennu's bulk surface mineralogy. CR-like parent bodies are targets of interest because they contain some of the most pristine materials from the solar nebula and can contain substantial amounts of H2O and OH− in addition to exotic organics. Unfortunately, terrestrial weathering makes constraining their indigenous mineralogy and organics challenging. Analysis of samples retrieved directly from an asteroid would help us disentangle the effects of terrestrial weathering and asteroidal aqueous alteration and hence whether some of the exotic organics and large populations of presolar grains were affected by terrestrial processes in meteorites. If Bennu is comprised of CR1(−like) material, in whole or in part, the OSIRIS–REx returned sample represents a tremendous opportunity to explore in depth what is currently a unique material among carbonaceous chondrites.

NASA’s first asteroid sample return mission, OSIRIS-REx, collected a sample from the surface of near-Earth asteroid Bennu in October 2020 and will deliver it to Earth in September 2023. Selecting a sample collection site on Bennu’s surface was challenging due to the surprising lack of large ponded deposits of regolith particles exclusively fine enough (≤ 2 cm diameter) to be ingested by the spacecraft’s Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM). Here we describe the Sampleability Map of Bennu, which was constructed to aid in the selection of candidate sampling sites and to estimate the probability of collecting sufficient sample. “Sampleability” is a numeric score that expresses the compatibility of a given area’s surface properties with the sampling mechanism. The algorithm that determines sampleability is a best fit functional form to an extensive suite of laboratory testing outcomes tracking the TAGSAM performance as a function of four observable properties of the target asteroid. The algorithm and testing were designed to measure and subsequently predict TAGSAM collection amounts as a function of the minimum particle size, maximum particle size, particle size frequency distribution, and the tilt of the TAGSAM head off the surface. The sampleability algorithm operated at two general scales, consistent with the resolution and coverage of data collected during the mission. The first scale was global and evaluated nearly the full surface. Due to Bennu’s unexpected boulder coverage and lack of ponded regolith deposits, the global sampleability efforts relied heavily on additional strategies to find and characterize regions of interest based on quantifying and avoiding areas heavily covered by material too large to be collected. The second scale was site-specific and used higher-resolution data to predict collected mass at a given contact location. The rigorous sampleability assessments gave the mission confidence to select the best possible sample collection site and directly enabled successful collection of hundreds of grams of material.

Global geologic maps are useful tools for efficient interpretation of a planetary body, and they provide global context for the diversity and evolution of the surface. We used data acquired by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft to create the first global geologic map of the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu. As this is the first geologic map of a small, non-spherical, rubble-pile asteroid, we discuss the distinctive mapping challenges and best practices that may be useful for future exploration of similar asteroids, such as those to be visited with the Hera and Janus missions. By mapping on two centimeter-scale global image mosaics (2D projected space) and a centimeter-scale global shape model (3D space), we generated three input maps respectively describing Bennu’s shape features, geologic features, and surface texture. Based on these input maps, we defined two geologic units: the Smooth Unit and the Rugged Unit. The units are differentiated primarily on the basis of surface texture, concentrations of boulders, and the distributions of lineaments, mass movement features, and craters. They are bounded by several scarps. The Rugged Unit contains abundant boulders and signs of recent mass movement. It also has fewer small(<20 m), putatively fresh craters than the Smooth Unit, suggesting that such craters have been erased in the former. Based on these geologic indicators, we infer that the Rugged Unit has the younger surface of the two. Differential crater size-frequency distributions and the distribution of the freshest craters suggest that both unit surfaces formed ~10–65 million years ago, when Bennu was located in the Main Asteroid Belt, and the Smooth Unit has not been significantly resurfaced in the past 2 million years. Meanwhile, the Rugged Unit has experienced resurfacing within the past ~500,000years during Bennu’s lifetime as a near-Earth asteroid. The geologic units are consistent with global diversity in slope, surface roughness, normal albedo, and thermal emission spectral characteristics. The site on Bennu where the OSIRIS-REx mission collected a regolith sample is located in the Smooth Unit, in a small crater nested within a larger one. So although the Smooth Unit is an older surface than the Rugged Unit, the impact-crater settingindicates that the material sampled was recently exposed. Several similarities are apparent between Bennu and asteroid (162173) Ryugu from a global geologic perspective, including two geologic units distinguishable by variations in the number density of boulders, as well as in other datasets such as brightness.

The impactor-to-crater size scaling relationships that enable estimates of planetary surface ages rely on an accurate formulation of impactor–target physics. An armouring regime, specific to rubble-pile surfaces, has been proposed to occur when an impactor is comparable in diameter to a target surface particle (for example, a boulder). Armouring is proposed to reduce crater diameter, or prevent crater formation in the asteroid surface, at small crater diameters. Here, using measurements of 1,560 craters on the rubble-pile asteroid (101955) Bennu, we show that the boulder population controls a transition from crater formation to armouring at crater diameters ~2–3 m, below which crater formation in the bulk surface is increasingly rare. By combining estimates of impactor flux with the armouring scaling relationship, we find that Bennu’s crater retention age (surface age derived from crater abundance) spans from 1.6–2.2 Myr for craters less than a few meters to ~10–65 Myr for craters >100 m in diameter, reducing the maximum surface age by a factor of >15 relative to previous estimates. The range of crater retention ages, together with latitudinal variations in large-crater spatial density, indicate that ongoing resurfacing processes render the surface many times younger than the bulk asteroid.

In this paper we present mineralogical and geochemical evidence forprograde metamorphism on a previously unrecognized, large (~640 – 1800km diameter) carbonaceous chondrite (CC) parent body from Almahata Sitta(AhS) 202 (C-ung), a clast in the AhS polymict meteorite. It has been drawnto our attention that some of the mineralogical textures shown in our figuresmay be inadequately described for the non-specialist reader, so here weprovide a clarifying figure and discussion.

Asteroids were likely a major source of volatiles and water to early Earth. Quantifying the hydration of asteroids is necessary to constrain models of the formation and evolution of the Solar System and the origin of Life on Earth. The OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer) mission showed that near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu contains widespread, abundant hydrated phyllosilicates, indicated by a ubiquitous absorption at ~ 2.7 μm. The objective of this work is to quantify the hydration—that is, the hydrogen content—of phyllosilicates on Bennu's surface and investigate how this hydration varies spatially. We analyse spectral parameters (normalized optical path length, NOPL; effective single-scattering albedo, ESPAT; and Gaussian modeling) computed from the hydrated phyllosilicate absorption band of spatially resolved visible–near-infrared spectra acquired by OVIRS (the OSIRIS-REx Visible and InfraRed Spectrometer). We also computed the same spectral parameters using laboratory-measured spectra of meteorites including CMs, CIs, and the ungrouped C2 Tagish Lake. We estimate the mean hydrogen content of water and hydroxyl groups in hydrated phyllosilicates on Bennu's surface to be 0.71 ± 0.16 wt%. This value is consistent with the hydration range of some aqueously altered meteorites (CMs, C2 Tagish Lake), but not the most aqueously altered group (CIs). The sample collection site of the OSIRIS-REx mission has slightly higher hydrogen content than average. Spatial variations in hydrogen content on Bennu's surface are linked to geomorphology, and may have been partially inherited from its parent body.

Visible-wavelength color and reflectance provide information about the geologic history of planetary surfaces. Here we present multispectral images (0.44 to 0.89 micrometers) of near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu. The surface has variable colors overlain on a moderately blue global terrain. Two primary boulder types are distinguishable by their reflectance and texture. Space weathering of Bennu surface materials does not simply progress from red to blue (or vice versa). Instead, freshly exposed, redder surfaces initially brighten in the near-ultraviolet region (i.e., become bluer at shorter wavelengths), then brighten in the visible to near-infrared region, leading to Bennu’s moderately blue average color. Craters indicate that the time scale of these color changes is ~105 years. We attribute the reflectance and color variation to a combination of primordial heterogeneity and varying exposure ages.

To characterize the ATLO (Assembly, Test, and Launch Operations) environment of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, we analyzed 17 aluminum witness foils and two blanks for bacterial, archaeal, fungal, and arthropod DNA. Under NASA’s Planetary Protection guidelines, OSIRIS-REx is a Category II outbound, Category V unrestricted sample return mission. As a result, it has no bioburden restrictions. However, the mission does have strict organic contamination requirements to achieve its primary objective of returning pristine carbonaceous asteroid regolith to Earth. Its target, near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, is likely to contain organic compounds that are biologically available. Therefore, it is useful to understand what organisms were present during ATLO as part of the larger contamination knowledge effort—even though it is unlikely that any of the organisms will survive the multi-year deep space journey. Even though these samples of opportunity were not collected or preserved for DNA analysis, we successfully amplified bacterial and archaeal DNA (16S rRNA gene) from 16 of the 17 witness foils containing as few as 7 ± 3 cells per sample. Fungal DNA (ITS1) was detected in 12 of the 17 witness foils. Despite observing arthropods in some of the ATLO facilities, arthropod DNA (COI gene) was not detected. We observed 1,009 bacterial and archaeal sOTUs (sub-operational taxonomic units, 100% unique) and 167 fungal sOTUs across all of our samples (25–84 sOTUs per sample). The most abundant bacterial sOTU belonged to the genus Bacillus. This sOTU was present in blanks and may represent contamination during sample handling or storage. The sample collected from inside the fairing just prior to launch contained several unique bacterial and fungal sOTUs that describe previously uncharacterized potential for contamination during the final phase of ATLO. Additionally, fungal richness (number of sOTUs) negatively correlates with the number of carbon-bearing particles detected on samples. The total number of fungal sequences positively correlates with total amino acid concentration. These results demonstrate that it is possible to use samples of opportunity to characterize the microbiology of low-biomass environments while also revealing the limitations imposed by sample collection and preservation methods not specifically designed with biology in mind.

When rubble-pile asteroid 2008 TC3 impacted Earth on October 7, 2008, the recovered rock fragments indicated that such asteroids can contain exogenic material. However, spacecraft missions to date have only observed exogenous contamination on large, monolithic asteroids that are impervious to collisional disruption. Here we report the presence of meter-scale exogenic boulders on the surface of near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu - the 0.5-km, rubble-pile target of the OSIRIS-REx mission which has been spectroscopically linked to the CM carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Hyperspectral data indicate that the exogenic boulders have the same distinctive pyroxene composition as the howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) meteorites that come from (4) Vesta, a 525-km diameter asteroid that has undergone differentiation and extensive igneous processing. Delivery scenarios include the infall of Vesta fragments directly onto Bennu or indirectly onto Bennu’s parent body, where the latter’s disruption created Bennu from a mixture of endogenous and exogenic debris. Our findings demonstrate that rubble-pile asteroids can preserve evidence of inter-asteroid mixing that took place at macroscopic scales well after planetesimal formation ended. Accordingly, the presence of HED-like material on the surface of Bennu provides previously unrecognized constraints on the collisional and dynamical evolution of the inner main belt.

Evaluating the water-soluble organic composition of carbonaceous chondrites is key to understanding the inventory of organic matter present at the origins of the solar system and the subsequent processes that took place inside asteroid parent bodies. Here, we present a side-by-side analysis and comparison of the abundance and molecular distribution of aliphatic amines, aldehydes, ketones, mono- and dicarboxylic acids, and free and acid-releasable cyanide species in the CM2 chondrites Aguas Zarcas and Murchison. The Aguas Zarcas meteorite is a recent fall that occurred in central Costa Rica and constitutes the largest recovered mass of a CM-type meteorite after Murchison. The overall content of organic species we investigated was systematically higher in Murchison than in Aguas Zarcas. Similar to previous meteoritic organic studies, carboxylic acids were one to two orders of magnitude more abundant than other soluble organic compound classes investigated in both meteorite samples. We did not identify free cyanide in Aguas Zarcas and Murchison; however, cyanide species analyzed after acid-digestion of the water-extracted meteorite mineral matrix were detected and were quantified at slightly higher abundances in Aguas Zarcas compared to Murchison. Although there were differences in the total abundances of specific compound classes, these two carbonaceous chondrites showed similar isomeric distributions of aliphatic amines and carboxylic acids, with common traits such as a complete suite of structural isomers that decreases in concentration with increasing molecular weight. These observations agree with their petrologic CM type-2 classification, suggesting that these meteorites experienced similar organic formation processes and/or conditions during parent body aqueous alteration.

The primary objective of the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission is to return to Earth a pristine sample of carbonaceous material from the primitive asteroid (101955) Bennu. To support compositional mapping of Bennu as part of sample site selection and characterization, we tested 95 spectral indices on visible to near infrared laboratory reflectance data from minerals and carbonaceous meteorites. Our aim was to determine which indices reliably identify spectral features of interest. Most spectral indices had high positive detection rates when applied to spectra of pure, single-component materials. The meteorite spectra have fewer and weaker absorption features and, as a result, fewer detections with the spectral indices. Indices targeting absorptions at 0.7 and 2.7–3 µm, which are attributable to hydrated minerals, were most successful for the meteorites. Based on these results, we identified a set of 17 indices that are most likely to be useful at Bennu. These indices detect olivines, pyroxenes, carbonates, water/OH-bearing minerals, serpentines, ferric minerals, and organics. Particle size and albedo are known to affect band depth but had a negligible impact on interpretive success with spectral indices. Preliminary analysis of the disk-integrated Bennu spectrum with these indices is consistent with expectations given the observed absorption near 3 lm. Our study prioritizes spectral indices to be used for OSIRIS-REx spectral analysis and mapping and informs the reliability of all index-derived data products, including a science value map for sample site selection.
