Abstract

The association constants of seven zinc dicarboxylates at zero ionic strength in water at 25°C have been calculated from e.m.f. measurements with two types of cell. Two stages of association appear to occur with zinc oxalate, malonate, tartrate and phthalate. Sources of uncertainties in the answers are discussed.

Abstract

H2-AgCl, glass-calomel and glass-AgCI electrode cells have been tested to estimate the dissociation constants at zero ionic strength of several ytterbium ion-pairs. The cells were designed so stock solutions could be added and the standard electrode potentials evaluated from the dissociation constants of the ion-pairing acids. Intercomparisons indicate that the uncertainties in the primary dissociation constants of YbAc2+, YbMal+ and YbSO+4 are about ±5%.

Abstract

Recoil energy from Ci4 beta particles in STAMe-C/sup 14/! toluene was found to cause negligible bond rupture, as judged by the yield of aniline, while with STA alpha -O/sup 14/! ethylbenzene about 15 to 20% bond rupture occurred. This was in line with a concept of rupture being caused by electronic excitation. (auth)

Abstract

The rate of reaction between dilute solutions of the chromium(II) aquo-ion and protonated hydroxylamine has been studied by several methods at 25 °C. The sulphate ion causes acceleration and this effect has been interpreted in terms of chromium(II) sulphate ion-pairing and the corresponding rate constant has been estimated. Results for dilute perchlorate solutions from 19 °C to 46 °C are also reported.
