In this work, we aim at investigating the morphology evolution of Milky Way mass-like dark matter haloes selected from the cielo and IllustrisTNG projects. The connection between halo shapes and their environment has been studied in previous works at z = 0 but their connection remains yet to be fully understood. We focus on the evolution across cosmic time of the halo shapes and the relation with the infalling material, using hydrodynamical simulations. Our findings show that haloes tend to be more triaxial at earlier times as a consequence of stronger accretion in the direction of the filaments. As the haloes evolve towards a dominant isotropic accretion mode and relaxation, their shape at 20 per cent of the virial radius becomes more spherical. In agreement with previous results, baryons have an important effect within the inner regions of the haloes, driving them from triaxial to rounder shapes. We also find a correlation between the strength of the quadrupole infalling mode and the degree of ellipticity of the haloes: as the filament strength decreases steadily with redshift, the haloes became more spherical and less elliptical.

In this work we aim at investigating the effects of baryons on the dark matter (DM) haloes structure, focusing on the correlation between the presence and importance of stellar discs and the halo shapes. We study the properties of a subsample of DM haloes from Fenix and EAGLE cosmological simulations. We inspect the central regions of haloes in the mass range [10.9 - 992.3] x 10^{10} Msun at z=0, comparing the hydrodynamic runs and their dark matter only (DMo) counterparts. Our results indicate that baryons have a significant impact on the shape of the inner halo, mainly within ~ 20 percent of the virial radius. We find haloes to be more spherical when hosting baryons. While the impact of baryons depends on the mass of the haloes, we also find a trend with morphology which suggests that the way baryons are assembled is also relevant in agreement with previous works. Our findings also indicate that disc galaxies preferentially form in haloes whose DMo counterparts were originally more spherical and with stronger velocity anisotropy. The presence of baryons alter the orbital structure of the DM particles of the haloes, which show a decrease in their velocity anisotropy, towards more tangentially biased orbits. This relative decrease is weaker in the case of disc-dominated galaxies. The next generation ground-based gravitational wave interferometers will possibly observe mergers of binary black holes (BBHs) and binary neutron stars (BNSs) to redshift $z\gtrsim{}10$ and $z\gtrsim{}2$, respectively. Here, we characterize the properties of merging BBHs, BNSs and neutron star-black hole binaries across cosmic time, by means of population-synthesis simulations combined with the Illustris cosmological simulation. We find that the mass of merging compact objects does not depend (or depends very mildly) on the merger redshift. Even the mass distribution of black holes depends only mildly on redshift, because BBHs originating from metal-poor progenitors ($Z\leq{}4\times{}10^{-3}$) dominate the entire population of merging BBHs across cosmic time. For a common-envelope efficiency $\alpha{}\ge{}3$, the main difference between the mass distribution of BBHs merging in the last Gyr and that of BBHs merging more than 11 Gyr ago is that there is an excess of heavy merging black holes ($20-35$ M$_\odot$) in the last Gyr. Hierarchical mergers are one of the distinctive signatures of binary black hole (BBH) formation through dynamical evolution. Here, we present a fast semi-analytic approach to simulate hierarchical mergers in nuclear star clusters (NSCs), globular clusters (GCs) and young star clusters (YSCs). Hierarchical mergers are more common in NSCs than they are in both GCs and YSCs because of the different escape velocity. The mass distribution of hierarchical BBHs strongly depends on the properties of first-generation BBHs, such as their progenitor’s metallicity. In our fiducial model, we form black holes (BHs) with masses up to ∼103 M⊙ in NSCs and up to ∼102 M⊙ in both GCs and YSCs. When escape velocities in excess of 100 km s−1 are considered, BHs with mass &gt, 103 M⊙ are allowed to form in NSCs. Hierarchical mergers lead to the formation of BHs in the pair instability mass gap and intermediate-mass BHs, but only in metal-poor environments. The local BBH merger rate in our models ranges from ∼10 to ∼60 Gpc−3 yr−1, hierarchical BBHs in NSCs account for ∼10−2–0.2 Gpc−3 yr−1, with a strong upper limit of ∼10 Gpc−3 yr−1. When comparing our models with the second gravitational-wave transient catalog, we find that multiple formation channels are favored to reproduce the observed BBH population.

Clustering measurements of Gravitational Wave (GW) mergers in Luminosity Distance Space can be used in the future as a powerful tool for Cosmology. We consider tomographic measurements of the Angular Power Spectrum of mergers both in an Einstein Telescope-like detector network and in some more advanced scenarios (more sources, better distance measurements, better sky localization). We produce Fisher forecasts for both cosmological (matter and dark energy) and merger bias parameters. Our fiducial model for the number distribution and bias of GW events is based on results from hydrodynamical simulations. The cosmological parameter forecasts with Einstein Telescope are less powerful than those achievable in the near future via galaxy clustering observations with, e.g., Euclid. However, in the more advanced scenarios we see significant improvements. Moreover, we show that bias can be detected at high statistical significance. Regardless of the specific constraining power of different experiments, many aspects make this type of analysis interesting anyway. For example, compact binary mergers detected by Einstein Telescope will extend up to very high redshifts. Furthermore, Luminosity Distance Space Distortions in the GW analysis have a different structure with respect to Redshift-Space Distortions in galaxy catalogues. We analyze the IllustrisTNG simulations to study the mass, volume fraction and phase distribution of gaseous baryons embedded in the knots, filaments, sheets and voids of the Cosmic Web from redshift $z=8$ to redshift $z=0$. We find that filaments host more star-forming gas than knots, and that filaments also have a higher relative mass fraction of gas in this phase than knots. We analyse the spatial distribution within host galaxies and chemical properties of the progenitors of Long Gamma Ray Bursts as a function of redshift. By using hydrodynamical cosmological simulations which include star formation, Supernova feedback and chemical enrichment and based on the hypothesis of the collapsar model with low metallicity, we investigate the progenitors in the range 0 < z < 3. Our results suggest that the sites of these phenomena tend to be located in the central regions of the hosts at high redshifts but move outwards for lower ones. We find that scenarios with low metallicity cut-offs best fit current observations. For these scenarios Long Gamma Ray Bursts tend to be [Fe/H] poor and show a strong alpha-enhancement evolution towards lower values as redshift decreases. The variation of typical burst sites with redshift would imply that they might be tracing different part of galaxies at different redshifts.

We explored the role of X-ray binaries composed by a black hole and a massive stellar companion [black hole X-ray binaries (BHXs)] as sources of kinetic feedback by using hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. Following previous results, our BHX model selects metal-poor stars (Z = [0, 10−4]) as possible progenitors. The model that better reproduces observations assumes that an ∼20 per cent fraction of low-metallicity black holes are in binary systems which produces BHXs. These sources are estimated to deposit ∼1052 erg of kinetic energy per event. With these parameters and in the simulated volume, we find that the energy injected by BHXs represents ∼30 per cent of the total energy released by Type II supernova and BHX events at redshift z ∼ 7 and then decreases rapidly as baryons get chemically enriched. Haloes with virial masses smaller than ∼1010 M (or Tvir 105 K) are the most directly affected ones by BHX feedback. These haloes host galaxies with stellar masses in the range 107–108 M. Our results show that BHX feedback is able to keep the interstellar medium warm, without removing a significant gas fraction, in agreement with previous analytical calculations. Consequently, the stellar-to-dark matter mass ratio is better reproduced at high redshift. Our model also predicts a stronger evolution of the number of galaxies as a function of the stellar mass with redshift when BHX feedback is considered. These findings support previous claims that the BHXs could be an effective source of feedback in early stages of galaxy evolution. Fil: Artale, Maria Celeste. We present the synthesis and characterization of the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 manganite in the form of tapes using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as binder. We have studied their electric and magnetic properties as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The magnetization results have been shown to be dominated by the intrinsic magnetic properties of the manganite. Resistivity measurements showed an insulating behavior in the whole range of temperatures measured, indicating that the percolation threshold of manganite grains has not been reached even for the sample with 35% of PMMA relative content. The obtained magnetoresistance is largest in the sample with 35% of PMMA relative content.

In this work, we investigate the chemical dependence of the progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts. Using hydrodynamical cosmological simulations consistent with the concordance Λ-CDM model which include star formation, chemical enrichment and supernova feedback in a self-consistent way, and assuming that these bursts are produced by a subset of massive stars (possibly with distinct chemical properties), we compute the LGRB rate at different redshifts. Introducing prescriptions for their peak isotropic luminosity function an d intrinsic spectrum, and using a Monte Carlo scheme to model their detectability by different high-energy observatories, we compute the distributions of the burst observables (peak flux, spectral peak energy) and compare them to actual data. Our preliminary results show that a possible chemical dependence for LGRBs progenitors cannot be ruled out, but it might be more complex than the usually assumed metallicity cut-off.

Recent observational and theoretical results suggest that the production rates and luminosities of high-mass X-ray binaries depend on metallicity. To test this prediction, we combine HMXB population synthesis results with numerical simulations of galaxy formation to produce synthetic populations of HMXBs in star-forming galaxies, and compare the model predictions to observations of HMXB populations in nearby and high-redshift galaxies. Our models show a fair agreement with observations only when the HMXB production and luminosities are assumed to depend strongly on metallicity.
