1. HEXITEC 2 × 2 tiled hard X-ray spectroscopic imaging detector system

Abstract

HEXITEC is a spectroscopic imaging X-ray detector technology developed at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for X-ray and γ-ray spectroscopic imaging applications. Each module has 80 × 80 pixels on a 250 μm pixel pitch, and has been implemented successfully in a number of applications. This paper presents the HEXITEC 2 × 2 detector system, a tiled array of 4 HEXITEC modules read out simultaneously, which provides an active area of 16 cm2. Systems have been produced using 1 mm thick Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) and 2 mm thick Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CdZnTe) sensor material. In this paper the system and data processing methods are presented, and the performance of the systems are evaluated. The detectors were energy calibrated using an 241Am sealed source. Three types of charge sharing correction were applied to the data-charge sharing addition (CSA), charge sharing discrimination (CSD), and energy curve correction (ECC) which compensates for energy lost in the inter-pixel region. ECC recovers an additional 34 % of counts in the 59.5 keV peak in CdTe compared to the use of CSD; an important improvement for photon-starved applications. Due to the high frame rate of the camera system (6.3 kHz) an additional End of Frame (EOF) correction was also applied to 6.0 % of events to correct for signals that were readout whilst the signal was still forming. After correction, both detector materials were found to have excellent spectroscopic performance with a mean energy resolution (FWHM) of 1.17 keV and 1.16 keV for CdZnTe and CdTe respectively. These results successfully demonstrate the ability to construct tiled arrays of HEXITEC modules to provide larger imaging areas.

Abstract

A three million pixel photon counting large area detector has been commissioned for the coherent diffraction imaging beamline (I13) of Diamond Light Source. Challenging requirements of small pixel size, large area and fast frame rates required the construction of a detector based upon a tiling of a large number of the latest generation of the Medipix family of photon counting ASICs, Medipix3RX and a highly parallel readout system based upon the Front End Module cards developed by STFC. Such a detector provides a significant improvement in field of view whilst maintaining the resolution afforded by the small pixel size, when compared to previously available Medipix-based detectors such as the quad-chip Merlin. A number of commissioning experiments have been performed on the beamline, and this Conference Record provides intial results from these measurements and determines the capabilities of the detector and beamline system.

Abstract

T2K is a second generation long-baseline experiment in Japan, designed to perform precision studies of neutrino oscillations. A neutrino beam originating at the J-PARC facility is sampled by two near detectors, approximately 280 m distant from the source and directed towards the Kamioka underground facility, 295 km distant, where the Super-Kamiokande water Cerenkov detector is situated. Both the on-axis (INGRID) and off-axis (ND280) near detectors employ the MIDAS framework for their data acquisition systems. Events are selected via a flexible hardware trigger, which allows mixed operating modes incorporating beam spill, cosmic and calibration triggers. Data are acquired from the front-end electronics over optical Gigabit Ethernet links by custom MIDAS front-end applications distributed over a cluster of Linux computers. Event fragments from all sub-detectors are merged and logged on a central backend processor and then copied to remote storage for long-term archival. The system is also designed to allow flexible partitioning of sub-detectors for standalone diagnostics and calibration. We present the design of the DAQ system and report on experience gathered during early operation of the near detectors. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract

A MHz frame rate X-ray area detector (LPD — Large Pixel Detector) is under development by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for the European XFEL. The detector will have 1 million pixels and allows analogue storage of 512 images taken at 4.5 MHz in the detector front end. The LPD detector has 500 μm thick silicon sensor tiles that are bump bonded to a readout ASIC. The ASIC's preamplifier provides relatively low noise at high speed which results in a high dynamic range of 105 photons over an energy range of 5–20 keV. Small scale prototypes of 32 × 256 pixels (LPD 2-Tile detector) and 256 × 256 pixels (LPD supermodule detector) are now available for X-ray tests. The performance of prototypes of the detector is reported for first tests under synchrotron radiation (PETRA III at DESY) and Free-Electron-Laser radiation (LCLS at SLAC). The initial performance of the detector in terms of signal range and noise, radiation hardness and spatial and temporal response are reported. The main result is that the 4.5 MHz sampling detection chain is reliably working, including the analogue on-chip memory concept. The detector is at least radiation hard up to 5 MGy at 12 keV. In addition the multiple gain concept has been demonstrated over a dynamic range to 104 at 12 keV with a readout noise equivalent to < 1 photon rms in its most sensitive mode.

Abstract

We present the development and prototype test of the LPD instrument, a novel pixel detector for the European XFEL. At XFEL the LPD detector must be capable of operating with a frame rate of 4.5MHz and record images with a dynamic range of 1:100,000 photons (12keV) whilst maintaining low noise. The prototype LPD system has a large in pixel memory depth of 512 images that can be selected with a flexible veto system. Data is then transferred off the detector head in between XFEL pulses with an accompanying high rate data acquisition system. The system has been prototyped and assembled into an LPD detector head that contains custom silicon sensors and ASICs as well as a programmable data acquisition cards and supporting electronics and mechanics. A second version of the ASIC has also been submitted for manufacture. The experiences with our first prototype are presented.

Abstract

A three million pixels photon counting area detector for the coherent diffraction imaging beam line (113) of Diamond Light Source has been developed by a joint team of Diamond and STFC staff. The detector is the state of the art of X-ray detection technology since it exploits the latest generation of Medipix ASICs family that introduced a number of innovations. The specifications required by the beam line represented a severe challenge to all of the components of the detector. The frame rate of Excalibur is up to 1,000 frames per second when stored in local RAM or up to 100 frames per second when streamed to storage. Tests with an X-ray set show the imaging capabilities of the detector as well as the data acquisition speed.

Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract

This paper reports the first demonstration of high-intensity x-ray imaging using cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) pixel detectors at a free electron laser (FEL). Prototype detectors were produced using the STFC large pixel detector (LPD) ASIC and sensors fabricated from a novel high-intensity-capable CdZnTe material produced by Redlen Technologies. Characterisation of the performance of this sensor material was completed at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) FEL. The detectors were operated at a frame rate of 1 MHz with 9.5 keV x-ray pulses delivered at a rate of 120 Hz. Measurements successfully demonstrated the linear response of the CdZnTe material to increasing numbers of x-rays up to a fluence of 8 GeV mm−2 per pulse, the limit of the dynamic range of the LPD ASIC.
