Abstract

Abstract Single hadron azimuthal asymmetries of positive and negative hadrons produced in muon semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarised deuterons are determined using the 2006 COMPASS data and also combined all deuteron COMPASS data. For each hadron charge, the dependence of the azimuthal asymmetry on the hadron azimuthal angle $$\phi $$ ϕ is obtained by means of a five-parameter fitting function that besides a $$\phi $$ ϕ -independent term includes four modulations predicted by theory: $$\sin \phi $$ sinϕ , $$\sin 2 \phi $$ sin2ϕ , $$\sin 3\phi $$ sin3ϕ and $$\cos \phi $$ cosϕ . The amplitudes of the five terms have been extracted, first, for the hadrons in the whole available kinematic region. In further fits, performed for hadrons from a restricted kinematic region, the $$\phi $$ ϕ -dependence is determined as a function of one of three variables (Bjorken-x, fractional energy of virtual photon taken by the outgoing hadron and hadron transverse momentum), while disregarding the others. Except the $$\phi $$ ϕ -independent term, all the modulation amplitudes are very small, and no clear kinematic dependence could be observed within experimental uncertainties.

Abstract

In Fig. 5 on p. 311 of our Phys. Lett. B 740 (2015) 303 an adjustment by 180∘ is required for the phases with respect to the L=2,M=1 wave, of the following waves: L=1,3,5 with M=1, and L=2 with M=2. After this correction (Fig. 5 (corrected) below), the extracted partial waves describe the angular distribution of the η(′) in the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frame, using Eq. (4) with implicit Condon-Shortley phase convention. The other results of our paper are not affected. The right-handed GJ coordinate system was defined by the z-axis pointing in the direction of the beam in the η(′)π− center-of-mass system and the y-axis pointing in the direction of precoilGJ×pbeamGJ.

Abstract

The Sivers function describes the correlation between the transverse spin of a nucleon and the transverse motion of its partons. For quarks, it was studied in previous measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons off transversely polarised nucleon targets, and it was found to be non-zero. In this letter the evaluation of the Sivers asymmetry for gluons is presented. The contribution of the photon–gluon fusion subprocess is enhanced by requiring two high transverse-momentum hadrons. The analysis method is based on a Monte Carlo simulation that includes three hard processes: photon–gluon fusion, QCD Compton scattering and the leading-order virtual-photon absorption process. The Sivers asymmetries of the three processes are simultaneously extracted using the LEPTO event generator and a neural network approach. The method is applied to samples of events containing at least two hadrons with large transverse momentum from the COMPASS data taken with a 160 GeV/c muon beam scattered off transversely polarised deuterons and protons. With a significance of about two standard deviations, a negative value is obtained for the gluon Sivers asymmetry. The result of a similar analysis for a Collins-like asymmetry for gluons is consistent with zero.

Abstract

Eight proton transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries are extracted in four regions of the photon virtuality Q2 from the COMPASS 2010 semi-inclusive hadron measurements in deep inelastic muon–nucleon scattering. These Q2 regions correspond to the four regions of the di-muon mass Q2 used in the ongoing analyses of the COMPASS Drell–Yan measurements, which allows for a future direct comparison of the nucleon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions extracted from these two alternative measurements. In addition, for the azimuthal asymmetries induced by the Sivers transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution function various two-dimensional kinematic dependences are presented. The integrated Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive with an accuracy that appears to be sufficient to test the sign change of the Sivers function predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics.

Abstract

Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a 6LiD target. The data were taken at 160 GeV beam energy and the results are shown for the kinematic range 1(GeV/c)24GeV/c2 in the mass of the hadronic final state. The deuteron double-spin asymmetry A1d and the deuteron longitudinal-spin structure function g1d are presented in bins of x and Q2. Towards lowest accessible values of x, g1d decreases and becomes consistent with zero within uncertainties. The presented final g1d values together with the recently published final g1p values of COMPASS are used to again evaluate the Bjorken sum rule and perform the QCD fit to the g1 world data at next-to-leading order of the strong coupling constant. In both cases, changes in central values of the resulting numbers are well within statistical uncertainties. The flavour-singlet axial charge a0, which is identified in the MS‾ renormalisation scheme with the total contribution of quark helicities to the nucleon spin, is extracted at next-to-leading order accuracy from only the COMPASS deuteron data: a0(Q2=3(GeV/c)2)=0.32±0.02stat±0.04syst±0.05evol. Together with the recent results on the proton spin structure function g1p, the results on g1d constitute the COMPASS legacy on the measurements of g1 through inclusive spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract

Precise measurements of charged-kaon multiplicities in deep inelastic scattering were performed. The results are presented in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x, the relative virtual-photon energy y, and the fraction z of the virtual-photon energy carried by the produced hadron. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration by scattering 160 GeV muons off an isoscalar 6LiD target. They cover the kinematic domain 1(GeV/c)25 GeV/c2 in the invariant mass of the hadronic system. The results from the sum of the z-integrated K+ and K− multiplicities at high x point to a value of the non-strange quark fragmentation function larger than obtained by the earlier DSS fit.

Abstract

Abstract Using a novel analysis technique, the gluon polarisation in the nucleon is re-evaluated using the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry measured in the cross section of semi-inclusive single-hadron muoproduction with photon virtuality $$Q^2>1~(\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$$ Q 2 > 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 . The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam impinging on a polarised $$^6$$ 6 LiD target. By analysing the full range in hadron transverse momentum $$p_\mathrm{T}$$ p T , the different $$p_\mathrm{T}$$ p T -dependences of the underlying processes are separated using a neural-network approach. In the absence of pQCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the selected kinematic domain, the gluon polarisation $$\Delta g/g$$ Δ g / g is evaluated at leading order in pQCD at a hard scale of $$\mu ^2= \langle Q^2 \rangle = 3 (\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$$ μ 2 = ⟨ Q 2 ⟩ = 3 ( GeV / c ) 2 . It is determined in three intervals of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons, $$x_\mathrm{g}$$ x g , covering the range $$0.04 \!

Multiplicities of charged pions and charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering were measured in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x, the relative virtual-photon energy y and the relative hadron energy z. Abstract

In the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark several left–right asymmetries are possible for the hadrons in the jet. When only one unpolarized hadron is selected, it exhibits an azimuthal modulation known as the Collins effect. When a pair of oppositely charged hadrons is observed, three asymmetries can be considered, a di-hadron asymmetry and two single hadron asymmetries. In lepton deep inelastic scattering on transversely polarized nucleons all these asymmetries are coupled with the transversity distribution. From the high statistics COMPASS data on oppositely charged hadron-pair production we have investigated for the first time the dependence of these three asymmetries on the difference of the azimuthal angles of the two hadrons. The similarity of transversity induced single and di-hadron asymmetries is discussed. A new analysis of the data allows quantitative relationships to be established among them, providing for the first time strong experimental indication that the underlying fragmentation mechanisms are all driven by a common physical process.

Abstract

New results for the double spin asymmetry A1p and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g1p are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160 GeV, in particular at lower values of x. They improve the statistical precision of g1p(x) by about a factor of two in the region x≲0.02. A next-to-leading order QCD fit to the g1 world data is performed. It leads to a new determination of the quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin, ΔΣ, ranging from 0.26 to 0.36, and to a re-evaluation of the first moment of g1p. The uncertainty of ΔΣ is mostly due to the large uncertainty in the present determinations of the gluon helicity distribution. A new evaluation of the Bjorken sum rule based on the COMPASS results for the non-singlet structure function g1NS(x,Q2) yields as ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants |gA/gV|=1.22±0.05 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.), which validates the sum rule to an accuracy of about 9%.

Abstract

Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

Abstract

A search for the exclusive production of the Zc±(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±. The data cover the range from 7 GeV to 19 GeV in the centre-of-mass energy of the photon–nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±)×σγN→Zc±(3900)N/σγN→J/ψN of 3.7×10−3 has been established at the confidence level of 90%. Keywords: COMPASS, Zc(3900), Photoproduction, Tetraquark

Abstract

Exclusive production of ηπ− and η′π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2,4,6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η′π− over ηπ− is found for the L=1,3,5 waves, which carry non-qq¯ quantum numbers. The L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η′π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2 are different.

Abstract

A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH3) targets is presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year 2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a 160 GeV/c muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about four the overall statistics with respect to the previously published data taken in the year 2007. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation.

Abstract

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS longitudinally polarised muon beam at 160 GeV/c and a 6LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations cos⁡ϕh, cos⁡2ϕh and sin⁡ϕh were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables x, z or pTh and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the cos⁡ϕh and cos⁡2ϕh modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Abstract

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons ω and ϕ is measured with a 190 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable xF of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on xF and on the invariant mass MpV of the system formed by fast proton pfast and vector meson V is discussed in terms of diffractive production of pfastV resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element ρ00 of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on xF and on MpV are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to ω production which are absent in the case of the ϕ meson. Removing the low-mass MpV resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of xF.

20. Comparison of MODIS surface temperatures to in situ measurements on the Greenland Ice Sheet from 2014 to 2017

Abstract

Remotely sensed land surface temperature (LST) data, such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST thermal infrared products, are useful for monitoring surface processes on the Greenland Ice Sheet in remote areas but must be validated to ensure accuracy. Using data from the Programme for Monitoring the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE), we conducted a MODIS LST validation (MOD/MYD11 C6 swath level product) using radiometric in-situ skin temperature records from 2014 to 2017 over 17 PROMICE sites mostly in the ice sheet's ablation zone. There is a significant cold bias in MODIS LST when compared to PROMICE skin temperature, particularly when PROMICE records temperatures below 0°C (mean bias: 2.4 ± 0.01°C mean ± standard error, RMSE = 3.2°C). Multiple linear regression analysis reveals the difference between MODIS LST and PROMICE skin temperature is larger at lower temperatures, lower latent heat fluxes and higher specific humidity. Our results confirm the presence of a progressive cold bias in the MODIS LST that should be considered in use of this product, and we identify and corroborate areas for ongoing algorithm development.

23. Principles and test methods of non-contact body thermometry

Abstract

SignificanceFar infrared (IR) has a long history in thermometry and febrile screening. Concerns have been raised recently over the accuracy of non-contact body thermometry. Clinical testing with febrile individuals constitutes the standard performance assessment. This is challenging to replicate, which may have inadvertently allowed approval of IR systems that are unable to detect fevers. The ability to test performance without relying on febrile participants would have ramifications for public health, especially if this discovered undisclosed differences in accuracy in widely used devices.AimTo identify foundational issues in, demonstrate principles of, and develop test methods for non-contact body thermometry.ApproachWe review foundational literature and identify confounds impeding performance of IR thermography (IRT) and non-contact IR thermometry (NCIT) for febrile screening and demonstrate corrections for their effects, which would otherwise be unacceptable. Almost none of the devices we are aware of compensate for these confounds. We reverse-engineer surface-to-body temperature relations for several FDA-cleared NCITs. We note their similarity to recently reported bias-to-normal behavior in other devices and determine range of body temperatures for which the device would produce a "normal" (non-febrile) output. Finally, we generate predictable elevated face temperatures in healthy subjects and demonstrate this in several devices.ResultsThe surface-to-body relationships for two IRT and one NCIT were linear, while all others exhibited nonlinear bias-to-normal behavior that produce normal temperatures when presented with surface temperatures ranging from hypothermia to moderate-to-severe fever. The test method was used in healthy, non-febrile subjects to generate elevated temperatures corresponding to body temperatures from 97.35F to 102.45F. Three out of five systems had negligible sensitivity.ConclusionsThis demonstrates an alternative evaluation method without the limitations and risks of febrile patients. These results indicate many devices may be unusable for body thermometry and may be providing a false sense of security for public health surveillance.

Abstract

The standard method of obtaining body temperature in a bird can be a stressful event, making routine evaluations challenging. Twenty-eight privately owned birds in good health were enrolled in the study to compare digital and infrared (IR) temperature readings. Digital thermometer readings in the cloaca were compared with two different IR thermometers, Ototemp (OT) and VetTemp (VT), used at the skin of the cloaca, breast, axillary area and tympanic membrane. The majority of the IR temperature readings were not significantly different from the cloacal digital reading. Additionally, the different IR thermometers read close to each other at individual reading sites. The IR measurements at the axilla (OT, mean = 40.35°C, SD = 1.24°C; VT, mean = 40.20°C, SD = 1.38°C) were most similar to the standard cloacal measurement (mean = 40.83°C, SD = 0.88°C). For veterinarians who currently avoid measuring cloacal body temperatures to prevent unnecessary stress on avian patients utilizing IR thermometers in the axillary region provide a less invasive and reasonable measurement of core body temperature in birds to allow for a more comprehensive assessment of health status.

In Fig. 5 on p. 311 of our Phys. Lett. B 740 (2015) 303 an adjustment by 180 ∘ is required for the phases with respect to the L = 2 , M = 1 wave, of the following waves: L = 1 , 3 , 5 with M = 1 , and L = 2 with M = 2 . After this correction (Fig. 5 (corrected) below), the extracted partial waves describe the angular distribution of the η ( ′ ) in the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frame, using Eq. (4) with implicit Condon-Shortley phase convention. The other results of our paper are not affected. The right-handed GJ coordinate system was defined by the z-axis pointing in the direction of the beam in the η ( ′ ) π − center-of-mass system and the y-axis pointing in the direction of p recoil GJ × p beam GJ .

26. Analyzing Near Surface Temperature Inversions Across the Greenland Ice Sheet Using In-situ, Remote Sensing, and Reanalysis Data

As Arctic temperatures have increased, the Greenland Ice Sheet has exhibited a negative mass balance, with a substantial and increasing fraction of mass loss due to surface melt. Understanding surface energy exchange processes in Greenland is critical for our ability to predict changes in mass balance. In-situ and remotely sensed surface temperatures are useful for monitoring trends, melt events, and surface energy balance processes, but these observations are complicated by the fact that surface temperatures and near surface air temperatures can significantly differ due to the presence of inversions that exist across the Arctic. Our previous work shows that even in the summer, very near surface inversions are present between the 2m air and surface temperatures a majority of the time at Summit, Greenland. In this study, we expand upon these results and combine a variety of data sources to quantify differences between surface snow/ice temperatures and 2m air temperatures across the Greenland Ice Sheet and investigate controls on the magnitude of these near surface temperature inversions. In-situ temperatures, wind speed, specific humidity, and albedo data are provided from automatic weather stations operated by the Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE). We use the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) cloud area fraction data to analyze effects of cloud presence on near surface temperature gradients. The in-situ temperatures are compared to Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) ice surface temperature data to extend findings across the ice sheet. Using PROMICE in-situ data from 2015, we find that these 2m temperature inversions are present 77% of the time, with a median strength of 1.7°C. The data confirm that the presence of clouds weakens inversions. Initial results indicate a RMSE of 3.9°C between MERRA-2 and PROMICE 2m air temperature, and a RMSE of 5.6°C between the two datasets for surface temperature. Improved understanding of controls on near surface inversions is important for use of remotely sensed snow surface temperatures and for modeling of surface mass and energy exchange processes.

Abstract

Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a 6 LiD target. The data were taken at 160 GeV beam energy and the results are shown for the kinematic range 1(GeV/c)2 4GeV/c2 in the mass of the hadronic final state. The deuteron double-spin asymmetry A1d and the deuteron longitudinal-spin structure function g1d are presented in bins of x and Q2 . Towards lowest accessible values of x , g1d decreases and becomes consistent with zero within uncertainties. The presented final g1d values together with the recently published final g1p values of COMPASS are used to again evaluate the Bjorken sum rule and perform the QCD fit to the g1 world data at next-to-leading order of the strong coupling constant. In both cases, changes in central values of the resulting numbers are well within statistical uncertainties. The flavour-singlet axial charge a0 , which is identified in the MS‾ renormalisation scheme with the total contribution of quark helicities to the nucleon spin, is extracted at next-to-leading order accuracy from only the COMPASS deuteron data: a0(Q2=3(GeV/c)2)=0.32±0.02stat±0.04syst±0.05evol . Together with the recent results on the proton spin structure function g1p , the results on g1d constitute the COMPASS legacy on the measurements of g1 through inclusive spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract

Scats from tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) were investigated in autumn at Ōrokonui Ecosanctuary on South Island, New Zealand. Eighty-seven tuatara had been translocated there 5–7 months previously, either directly from Stephens Island/Takapourewa or via captivity. Tuatara at Ōrokonui fed on diverse invertebrates, including beetles, millipedes, spiders, dipteran flies and cave wētā. Prey occurrence in large scats (presumed to come from adults) was similar in frequency to that in small scats (presumed to be from medium–large juveniles), apart from a higher incidence of spiders in those from adults. Tuatara scats contained scarabaeid and large carabid beetles more frequently, and tenebrionid beetles less frequently, than reported on Stephens Island. Unlike tuatara on Stephens Island, those at Ōrokonui do not have access to seabirds or tree wētā, and showed no certain predation on passerines or reptiles. Abstract

Snow cover serves as a major control on the surface energy budget in temperate regions due to its high reflectivity compared to underlying surfaces. Winter in the northeastern United States has changed over the last several decades, resulting in shallower snowpacks, fewer days of snow cover, and increasing precipitation falling as rain in the winter. As these climatic changes occur, it is imperative that we understand current controls on the evolution of seasonal snow albedo in the region. Over three winter seasons between 2013 and 2015, snow characterization measurements were made at three open sites across New Hampshire. These near-daily measurements include spectral albedo, snow optical grain size determined through contact spectroscopy, snow depth, snow density, black carbon content, local meteorological parameters, and analysis of storm trajectories using the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model. Using analysis of variance, we determine that land-based winter storms result in marginally higher albedo than coastal storms or storms from the Atlantic Ocean. Through multiple regression analysis, we determine that snow grain size is significantly more important in albedo reduction than black carbon content or snow density. And finally, we present a parameterization of albedo based on days since snowfall and temperature that accounts for 52% of variance in albedo over all three sites and years. Our improved understanding of current controls on snow albedo in the region will allow for better assessment of potential response of seasonal snow albedo and snow cover to changing climate.

30. Major fraction of black carbon is flushed from the melting New Hampshire snowpack nearly as quickly as soluble impurities

Abstract

Seasonal snowpacks accumulate impurities derived from atmospheric aerosols and trace gases throughout the winter and release them during snow melt. Previous field and laboratory studies have shown that a snowpack can lose up to 80% of the soluble ion burden in the first 20% of the melt, an event commonly known as an ionic pulse. Other studies have concluded that particulate impurities (e.g. black carbon (BC)) concentrate in surface layers during melt which can have important implications for snowpack albedo. However, model and field studies have indicated that meltwater scavenging efficiency of BC in melting snowpacks is still an area of uncertainty. To quantify BC melt dynamics and the release of soluble impurities, we collected and analyzed near daily chemical profiles in the snowpack at three sites during two winters in New Hampshire, United States of America. We observe an ionic pulse and a pulse of BC from the snowpack at the onset of melt; up to 62% of BC leaves within the first 24% of the melt. Surface concentrations of BC are higher than seasonal medians at the end of the winter season, but surface enhancements do not appear to be closely linked to decreases in snow-water equivalence caused by melting.

Abstract

As rapid warming of the Arctic occurs, it is imperative that climate indicators such as temperature be monitored over large areas to understand and predict the effects of climate changes. Temperatures are traditionally tracked using in situ 2 m air temperatures and can also be assessed using remote sensing techniques. Remote sensing is especially valuable over the Greenland Ice Sheet, where few ground-based air temperature measurements exist. Because of the presence of surface-based temperature inversions in ice-covered areas, differences between 2 m air temperature and the temperature of the actual snow surface (referred to as “skin” temperature) can be significant and are particularly relevant when considering validation and application of remote sensing temperature data. We present results from a field campaign extending from 8 June to 18 July 2015, near Summit Station in Greenland, to study surface temperature using the following measurements: skin temperature measured by an infrared (IR) sensor, 2 m air temperature measured by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) meteorological station, and a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface temperature product. Our data indicate that 2 m air temperature is often significantly higher than snow skin temperature measured in situ, and this finding may account for apparent biases in previous studies of MODIS products that used 2 m air temperature for validation. This inversion is present during our study period when incoming solar radiation and wind speed are both low. As compared to our in situ IR skin temperature measurements, after additional cloud masking, the MOD/MYD11 Collection 6 surface temperature standard product has an RMSE of 1.0 ∘C and a mean bias of −0.4 ∘C, spanning a range of temperatures from −35 to −5 ∘C (RMSE = 1.6 ∘C and mean bias = −0.7 ∘C prior to cloud masking). For our study area and time series, MODIS surface temperature products agree with skin surface temperatures better than previous studies indicated, especially at temperatures below −20 ∘C, where other studies found a significant cold bias. We show that the apparent cold bias present in other comparisons of 2 m air temperature and MODIS surface temperature may be a result of the near-surface temperature inversion. Further investigation of how in situ IR skin temperatures compare to MODIS surface temperature at lower temperatures (below −35 ∘C) is warranted to determine whether a cold bias exists for those temperatures.

Abstract

New results for the double spin asymmetry A(1)(p) and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g(1)(p) are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160 GeV, in particular at lower values of x. They improve the statistical precision of g(1)(p)(x) by about a factor of two in the region x less than or similar to 0.02. A next-to-leading order QCD fit to the g(1) world data is performed. It leads to a new determination of the quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin, Delta Sigma, ranging from 0.26 to 0.36, and to a re-evaluation of the first moment of g(1)(p). The uncertainty of Delta Sigma is mostly due to the large uncertainty in the present determinations of the gluon helicity distribution. A new evaluation of the Bjorken sum rule based on the COMPASS results for the non-singlet structure function g(1)(NS) (x, Q(2)) yields as ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants vertical bar gA/gV vertical bar = 1.22 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.10 (syst.), which validates the sum rule to an accuracy of about 9%.

Abstract

Translocations are increasingly used in species conservation, but success rates can be low. Experimental approaches are needed to compare the outcomes of translocation strategies, including those involving head-starting (the rearing of juveniles in captivity before release). Here, we studied the reintroduction of head-started and wild-caught juveniles of a distinctive reptile, the tuatara Sphenodon punctatus, on the South Island of New Zealand. We compared morphometric, ecophysiological, behavioural and spatial aspects for juveniles from three groups (wild-caught from a warmer climate, head-started from a warmer climate and head-started from the local climate), focusing on the first 5 months of summer following release. Group did not affect body condition at recapture, but wild-caught juveniles, despite being the only animals with ticks at release, grew faster and had higher inferred body temperatures than individuals head-started in a warmer climate. Wild-caught juveniles were less frequently seen emerged than juveniles head-started at the release site, and no animals had ticks at the summer's end. Mean dispersal distance and home-range size did not differ significantly between groups, and all groups had high survival (96.4–100% over first summer; at least 66.7–73.3% after the first winter following release). We conclude that, for most metrics, post-release performance of head-started and wild-caught juvenile tuatara was similar, and that head-started groups can differ between each other as much as between captive and wild. Our results emphasize the species-specific nature of translocation outcomes.

Abstract

Tarantulas extend the femur–patella (proximal) and tibia–metatarsal (distal) joints of their legs hydraulically. Because these two hydraulically actuated joints are positioned in series, hemolymph flow within each leg is expected to mechanically couple the movement of the joints. In the current study, we tested two hypotheses: (1) at lower temperatures, movement of the two in-series hydraulic joints within a leg will be less coupled because of increased hemolymph viscosity slowing hemolymph flow; and (2) at higher temperatures, movement of the two in-series hydraulic joints will be less coupled because the higher stride frequencies limit the time available for hemolymph flow. We elicited maximal running speeds at four ecologically relevant temperatures (15, 24, 31 and 40°C) in Texas Brown tarantulas (Aphonopelma hentzi). The spiders increased sprint speed 2.5-fold over the temperature range by changing their stride frequency but not stride length. The coefficient of determination for linear regression (R2) of the proximal and distal joint angles was used as the measure of the degree of coupling between the two joints. This coupling coefficient between the proximal and distal joint angles, for both forelegs and hind­legs, was significantly lowest at the highest temperature at which the animals ran the fastest with the highest stride frequencies. The coordination of multiple, in-series hydraulically actuated joints may be limited by operating speed.

Abstract

A search for the exclusive production of the Z(c)(+/-)(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Z(c)(+/-)(3900). J/Psi pi(+/-). The data cover the range from 7GeV to 19GeV in the centre-of- mass energy of the photon-nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Z(c)(+/-)(3900)-> J/Psi pi(+/-)) x sigma(gamma N) -> Z(c)(+/-)(3900) N/sigma gamma N -> J/Psi N 3.7 x10(-3) has been established at the confidence level of90%. Abstract

The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on diffractively produced pi(-) pi(-) pi(+) final states using a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a stationary proton target. This data set allows for a systematic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion mass, 0.5 < m(3 pi) < 2.5 GeV/c(2), and in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, 0.1 < t' < 1.0 (GeV/c)(2). This two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant 3 pi production. In this paper, we present detailed studies on selected 3p partial waves with J(PC) = 0(-+) ,1(++) ,2(-+) ,2(++) ,and 4(++). In these waves, we observe the well-known groundstate mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson a(1)(1420) decaying into f(0) (980)pi. In addition, we present the results of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the pi(-)pi(+) subsystem with I(G)J(PC) = 0(+)0(++) in various partial waves from the pi(-)pi(-)pi(+) data. Evidence is found for correlation of the f (0)(980) and f(0)(1500) appearing as intermediate pi(-)pi(+) isobars in the decay of the known pi(1800) and pi(2)(1880).

Abstract

Proton transverse-spin azimuthal asymmetries are extracted from the COMPASS 2010 semi-inclusive hadron measurements in deep inelastic muon-nucleon scattering in those four regions of the photon virtuality $Q^2$, which correspond to the four regions of the di-muon mass $\sqrt{Q^2}$ used in the ongoing analysis of the COMPASS Drell-Yan measurements. This allows for a future direct comparison of the nucleon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions extracted from these two alternative measurements. Various two-dimensional kinematic dependences are presented for the azimuthal asymmetries induced by the Sivers transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution function. The integrated Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive with an accuracy that appears to be sufficient to test the sign change of the Sivers function predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics., 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The Sivers function describes the correlation between the transverse spin of a nucleon and the transverse motion of its partons. It was extracted from measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons off transversely polarised nucleon targets, and it turned out to be non-zero for quarks. In this letter the evaluation of the Sivers asymmetry for gluons in the same process is presented. The analysis method is based on a Monte Carlo simulation that includes three hard processes: photon-gluon fusion, QCD Compton scattering and leading-order virtual-photon absorption process. The Sivers asymmetries of the three processes are simultaneously extracted using the LEPTO event generator and a neural network approach. The method is applied to samples of events containing at least two hadrons with large transverse momentum from the COMPASS data taken with a 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam scattered off transversely polarised deuterons and protons. With a significance of more than two standard deviations a negative value is obtained for the gluon Sivers asymmetry. The result of a similar analysis for a Collins-like asymmetry for gluons is consistent with zero., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Multiplicities of charged pions and charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering were measured in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x , the relative virtual-photon energy y and the relative hadron energy z . Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160GeV muon beam and an isoscalar target ( 6 LiD). They cover the kinematic domain in the photon virtuality Q2>1(GeV/c)2 , 0.004 1(GeV/c$)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.2 < z < 0.85$ and $0.1 < y < 0.7$. In addition, a leading-order pQCD analysis was performed using the pion multiplicity results to extract quark fragmentation functions.

Abstract

Precise measurements of charged-kaon multiplicities in deep inelastic scattering were performed. The results are presented in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x, the relative virtual-photon energy y, and the fraction z of the virtual-photon energy carried by the produced hadron. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration by scattering 160 GeV muons off an isoscalar 6 LiD target. They cover the kinematic domain 1 (GeV/c)2 < Q2 < 60 (GeV/c)^2 in the photon virtuality, 0.004 < x < 0.4, 0.1 < y < 0.7, 0.20 < z < 0.85, and W > 5 GeV/c^2 in the invariant mass of the hadronic system. The results from the sum of the z-integrated K+ and K- multiplicities at high x point to a value of the non-strange quark fragmentation function larger than obtained by the earlier DSS fit., 10 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

COMPASS has studied exclusive production of ρ 0 mesons using a 160 GeV/ c muon beam and a transversely polarised NH 3 target. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal aymmetries were measured in dependence on Q 2 , x Bj , or p T 2 . Except the sin ϕ S asymmetry, obtained to be − 0.019 ± 0.008( stat .) ± 0.003( syst .), all others were found to be consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties. Phenomenological GPD-based model calculations agree well with the data and interpret the result as evidence for the existence of chiral-odd, transverse generalised parton distributions.

Abstract

The physical structure of polar firn plays a key role in the mechanisms by which glaciers and ice sheets preserve a natural archive of past atmospheric composition. This study presents the first measurements of gas diffusivity and permeability along with microstructural information measured from the near-surface firn through the firn column to pore close-off. Both fine- and coarse-grained firn from Summit, Greenland are included in this study to investigate the variability in firn caused by seasonal and storm-event layering. Our measurements reveal that the porosity of firn (derived from density) is insufficient to describe the full profiles of diffusivity and permeability, particularly at porosity values above 0.5. Thus, even a model that could perfectly predict the density profile would be insufficient for application to issues involving gas transport. The measured diffusivity profile presented here is compared to two diffusivity profiles modeled from firn air measurements from Summit. Because of differences in scale and in firn processes between the true field situation, firn modeling, and laboratory measurements, the results follow a similar overall pattern but do not align; our results constitute a lower bound on diffusive transport. In comparing our measurements of both diffusivity and permeability to previous parameterizations from numerical 3-D lattice-Boltzmann modeling, it is evident that the previous relationships to porosity are likely site-specific. We present parameterizations relating diffusivity and permeability to porosity as a possible tool, though use of direct measurements would be far more accurate when feasible. The relationships between gas transport properties and microstructural properties are characterized and compared to existing relationships for general porous media, specifically the Katz–Thompson (KT), Kozeny–Carman (KC), and Archie's law approximations. While those approximations can capture the general trend of gas transport relationships, they result in high errors for individual samples and fail to fully describe firn variability, particularly the differences between coarse- and fine-grained firn. We present a direct power law relationship between permeability and gas diffusivity based on our co-located measurements; further research will indicate if this type of relationship is site-specific. This set of measurements and relationships contributes a unique starting point for future investigations in developing more physically based models of firn gas transport.

Abstract

Gas diffusivity in snow and firn is a basic transport parameter that is important for snow-air exchange processes and for ice core interpretation of past atmospheric composition. Firn is snow that is more than one year old, and it exists over many thousands of kilometers of the polar ice sheets, comprising approximately the upper 60–120 m of the ice sheet. Because use of firn air for climate and environmental investigations is a relatively new science, and because of the difficulties in working with firn as a temperature-dependent porous material, few direct measurements of the gas diffusivity through the firn column have been made. This paper describes the development, testing, validation, and initial use of a diffusion chamber specifically designed to measure inert gas diffusivity on firn cores. A brief review of previous methods for determining gas diffusivity for various porous media is discussed. The new technique and apparatus are described. Results of validation of the technique on multiple sizes of glass beads are presented, including comparison to experimental and theoretical results from the literature. After this verification, initial results obtained from using the technique to measure the SF 6 gas diffusivity of firn samples from Summit, Greenland are presented; results ranged from 0.005 cm 2 /s to 0.033 cm 2 /s. This set of measurements is compared to the diffusivity of other natural porous media and also to the few previous measurements of gas diffusivity of firn. The improved technique offers a more direct measurement of the transport parameter than other techniques previously used, and offers good potential for future investigations aimed at understanding processes of firnification and gas trapping for ice core climate change research.

Abstract

We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q(2) > 1 (GeV/c)(2) including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised (LiD)-Li-6 target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x(g) covering the range 0.04 < x(g) < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x(g). Their average is Delta g/g = 0.125 +/- 0.060 (stat.) +/- 0.063 (syst.) at average x(g) = 0.09 and a scale of mu(2) = 3 (GeV/c)(2).

Various continuous-wave (CW) electron gun technologies are reviewed, including DC, superconducting radio frequency RF (SRF), hybrid DC-SRF and normal-conducting RF. Also, the SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) normal-conducting RF gun and injector are described, and the performance to date, including the bunch emittance achieved and the dark current observed, is presented.

Abstract

The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) in hard exclusive production of rho(0) mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E-q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q(2), x-B-j and p(T)(2) dependence of A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) is presented in a wide kinematic range: 1 (GeV/c)(2) < Q(2) < 10 (GeV/c)(2), 0.003 < xB(j) < 0.3 and 0.05 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for protons or 0.10 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for deuterons. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E-u and E-d approximately cancel. Abstract

We measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries $A_{LL}$ for single hadron muo-production off protons and deuterons at photon virtuality $Q^2$ < 1(GeV/$\it c$)$^2$ for transverse hadron momenta $p_T$ in the range 0.7 GeV/$\it c$ to 4 GeV/$\it c$ . They were determined using COMPASS data taken with a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/$\it c$ or 200 GeV/$\it c$ impinging on polarised $\mathrm{{}^6LiD}$ or $\mathrm{NH_3}$ targets. The experimental asymmetries are compared to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and are sensitive to the gluon polarisation $\Delta G$ inside the nucleon in the range of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons $0.05 < x_g < 0.2$.
