Abstract

El buen comportamiento del zinc frente a la corrosión atmosférica ha conducido a que este material sea utilizado ampliamente, sobre todo, como recubrimiento del acero. Por este motivo, desde hace unos 50 años, se han venido realizando estudios sistemáticos para tratar de comprender los mecanismos de su interacción con la atmósfera y, hoy en día, el tema sigue siendo objeto de intensa investigación. En este artículo se presenta una revisión de los aspectos fundamentales relacionados con el conocimiento acumulado, en este tiempo, sobre el fenómeno de la corrosión atmosférica del zinc, expuesto tanto en ambientes exteriores como en interiores.

Abstract

Introduction: POEMS syndrome is a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with a clonal plasma cell neoplasm, in general is a rare disease and its descriptions are based on series and case reports. Objective: To describe the clinical features and outcomes in a case series of patients with POEMS syndrome. Material and methods: Patients who met the diagnostic criteria for POEMS syndrome proposed by Dispenzieri were selected. These patients came from the medical consultation of different neurologists specialized in neuromuscular pathology in the period from 2005 to 2021; likewise, a review of the Colombian literature of all published cases of patients with diagnosis of POEMS syndrome was performed. As a result, 16 cases of patients with this diagnosis were collected and reviewed. Discussion and conclusion: The symptoms, clinical course and treatment of our case series are similar to those published in the global literature. Early diagnosis and active treatment significantly modify the progression of the disease, as well as its overall prognosis. Patients with longer survival and lower disease burden were those who received adjuvant treatment with autologous stem cell transplantation. Resumen: Introducción: El síndrome POEMS es un trastorno paraneoplásico relacionado con una neoplasia clonal de células plasmáticas. La evidencia disponible sobre esta enfermedad rara proviene de estudios de casos y series de casos. Objetivo: Nuestro objetivo es describir las características clínicas y los resultados de una serie de casos de síndrome POEMS. Materiales y método: Seleccionamos pacientes que cumplían con los criterios diagnósticos de síndrome POEMS propuestos por Dispenzieri. Dichos pacientes fueron atendidos en las consultas de neurólogos especializados en patología neuromuscular entre 2005 y 2021. También realizamos una revisión de la literatura que incluyó todos los casos de pacientes con síndrome POEMS diagnosticados en Colombia. La muestra final incluyó 16 pacientes con dicho diagnóstico, cuyos resultados revisamos. Discusión y conclusión: Los síntomas, el curso clínico y el tratamiento en nuestra serie de casos fueron similares a los descritos en la literatura internacional. El diagnóstico precoz y un tratamiento activo logran modificar significativamente el avance de la enfermedad y el pronóstico de los pacientes. Aquellos pacientes sometidos a trasplante autólogo de células madre como tratamiento complementario mostraron una supervivencia mayor y una menor carga de la enfermedad.

Abstract

Summary: Human monoclonal antibodies (hmAbs) targeting the Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP) on the sporozoite surface are a promising tool for preventing malaria infection. However, their mechanisms of protection remain unclear. Here, using 13 distinctive PfCSP hmAbs, we provide a comprehensive view of how PfCSP hmAbs neutralize sporozoites in host tissues. Sporozoites are most vulnerable to hmAb-mediated neutralization in the skin. However, rare but potent hmAbs additionally neutralize sporozoites in the blood and liver. Efficient protection in tissues mainly associates with high-affinity and high-cytotoxicity hmAbs inducing rapid parasite loss-of-fitness in the absence of complement and host cells in vitro. A 3D-substrate assay greatly enhances hmAb cytotoxicity and mimics the skin-dependent protection, indicating that the physical stress imposed on motile sporozoites by the skin is crucial for unfolding the protective potential of hmAbs. This functional 3D cytotoxicity assay can thus be useful for downselecting potent anti-PfCSP hmAbs and vaccines.

Abstract

Membranolytic molecules constitute the first line of innate immune defense against pathogenic microorganisms. Plasmodium sporozoites are potentially exposed to these cytotoxic molecules in the hemolymph and salivary glands of mosquitoes, as well as in the skin, blood, and liver of the mammalian host. Here, we show that sporozoites are resistant to bacteriolytic concentration of cecropin B, a cationic amphipathic antimicrobial insect peptide. Intriguingly, anti-tumoral cell-penetrating peptides derived from the anti-apoptotic protein AAC11 killed P. berghei and P. falciparum sporozoites. Using dynamic imaging, we demonstrated that the most cytotoxic peptide, called RT39, did not significantly inhibit the sporozoite motility until the occurrence of a fast permeabilization of the parasite membrane by the peptide. Concomitantly, the cytosolic fluorescent protein constitutively expressed by sporozoites leaked from the treated parasite body while To-Pro 3 and FITC-labeled RT39 internalized, respectively, binding to the nucleic acids and membranes of sporozoites. This led to an increase in the parasite granularity as assessed by flow cytometry. Most permeabilization events started at the parasite’s posterior end, resulting in the appearance of a fluorescent dot in the anterior part of sporozoites. Understanding and exploiting the susceptibility of sporozoites and other plasmodial stages to membranolytic molecules might foster strategies to eliminate the parasite and block its transmission.

Abstract

On-farm methane (CH4) emissions need to be estimated accurately so that the mitigation effect of recommended practices can be accounted for. In the present study prediction equations for enteric CH4 have been developed in lieu of expensive animal measurement approaches. Our objectives were to: (1) compile a dataset from individual beef cattle data for the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region; (2) determine main predictors of CH4 emission variables; (3) develop and cross-validate prediction models according to dietary forage content (DFC); and (4) compare the predictive ability of these newly-developed models with extant equations reported in literature, including those currently used for CH4 inventories in LAC countries. After outlier's screening, 1100 beef cattle observations from 55 studies were kept in the final dataset (∼ 50 % of the original dataset). Mixed-effects models were fitted with a random effect of study. The whole dataset was split according to DFC into a subset for all-forage (DFC = 100 %), high-forage (94 % ≥ DFC ≥ 54 %), and low-forage (50 % ≥ DFC) diets. Feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) were the main predictors of CH4 emission (g d−1), whereas this was feeding level [dry matter intake (DMI) as % of body weight] for CH4 yield (g kg−1 DMI). The newly-developed models were more accurate than IPCC Tier 2 equations for all subsets. Simple and multiple regression models including ADG were accurate and a feasible option to predict CH4 emission when data on feed intake are not available. Methane yield was not well predicted by any extant equation in contrast to the newly-developed models. The present study delivered new models that may be alternatives for the IPCC Tier 2 equations to improve CH4 prediction for beef cattle in inventories of LAC countries based either on more or less readily available data.

Abstract

Pods of Samanea saman have been reported to be effective in mitigating methane (CH4) emissions in ruminants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of S. saman pod meal in the ration on feed intake, apparent digestibility, rumen fermentation, rumen degradation, protozoa population, and enteric CH4 emissions in crossbred heifers fed low-quality tropical grass. Four crossbred heifers (Bos taurus × B. indicus) with an average live weight (LW) of 261.5 ± 1.29 kg were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four periods of 23 days (17 days for adaptation and 6 days for measurements of response variables). Levels of inclusion of S. saman ground pods in the ration were 0, 10, 20 and 30% of dry matter (DM). Enteric CH4 emissions were measured using open-circuit respiration chambers. Additionally, rumen degradation of the different components of S. saman pods was assessed. Incorporation of S. saman levels had no effect on dry matter intake (DMI) (P > .05), apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) (P > .05) nor protozoal count (P > .05). Abstract

We aim to summarize the literature on international patterns of care for patients with neurogenic bladder (NGB) from spinal cord injury (SCI). We performed a PubMed database search, hand review of references, communication with professional societies, and registry evaluations for pertinent data. Established patterns of care, including SCI registries and specialty centers, are available in high-resource countries such as the US and UK. As such, mortality rates from complications of NGB/SCI are lower. Access to intermittent catheterization supplies, among other resources, may be inadequate in many low-income regions. Cultural and religious beliefs may also hinder integration of proper bladder management in SCI patients. While guidelines exist in many parts of the world, it is unclear how rigorously they are disseminated or followed. While there is a paucity of high-level evidence, the differences in patterns of care are closely related to socioeconomic status and resources of the geographic area. Future research efforts should focus on improving access to diagnostic modalities, supplies, and specialists in these areas.

Abstract

Fruits serve as a source of energy, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. One of the barriers in increasing fruit and vegetables consumption is time required to prepare them. Overall, fruit bars have a far greater nutritional value than the fresh fruits because all nutrients are concentrated and, therefore, would be a convenience food assortment to benefit from the health benefits of fruits. The consumers prefer fruit bars that are more tasted followed by proper textural features that could be obtained by establishing the equilibrium of ingredients, the proper choosing of manufacturing stages and the control of the product final moisture content. Fruit bar preparations may include a mixture of pulps, fresh or dried fruit, sugar, binders, and a variety of minor ingredients. Additionally to the conventional steps of manufacturing (pulping, homogenizing, heating, concentrating, and drying) there have been proposed the use of gelled fruit matrices, dried gels or sponges, and extruders as new trends for processing fruit bars. Different single-type dehydration or combined methods include, in order of increasing process time, air-infrared, vacuum and vacuum-microwave drying convective-solar drying, convective drying, and freeze drying are also suggested as alternative to solar traditional drying stage. The dehydration methods that use vacuum exhibited not only higher retention of antioxidants but also better color, texture, and rehydration capacity. Antioxidant activity resulting from the presence of phenolic compounds in the bars is well established. Besides this, fruit bars are also important sources of carbohydrates and minerals. Given the wide range of bioactive factors in fresh fruits that are preserved in fruit bars, it is plausible that their uptake consumption have a positive effect in reducing the risk of many diseases.

Abstract

Good behaviour of zinc against atmospheric corrosion has leaded this material to be widely used, mainly for protection of steel. For this reason since approximately 50 years it have been making systematic studies in order to understand the mechanisms of its interaction with the atmosphere and nowadays it continues being object of intensive research. In this paper a review of the state-of-the-art in the knowledge of atmospheric corrosion of zinc is presented, when it is exposed in both outdoor and indoor atmospheres. El buen comportamiento del zinc frente a la corrosión atmosférica ha conducido a que este material sea utilizado ampliamente, sobre todo, como recubrimiento del acero. Por este motivo, desde hace unos 50 años, se han venido realizando estudios sistemáticos para tratar de comprender los mecanismos de su interacción con la atmósfera y, hoy en día, el tema sigue siendo objeto de intensa investigación. En este artículo se presenta una revisión de los aspectos fundamentales relacionados con el conocimiento acumulado, en este tiempo, sobre el fenómeno de la corrosión atmosférica del zinc, expuesto tanto en ambientes exteriores como en interiores.

Abstract

The mechanical behavior under contact loading of systems consisting of PVD AlCrN film deposited onto two distinct hard substrates - cemented carbides and tool steel is studied by means of indentation testing techniques, under monotonic and cyclic condition. Experimental work includes assessment of critical applied loads for emergence of circular cracks at the coating surface, as well as evaluation of both surface and subsurface damage evolution. Results indicate that both coated systems are susceptible to mechanical degradation associated with repetitive contact load. Furthermore, significant differences on contact fatigue behavior between the two studied coated systems are evidenced under consideration of cracking evolution at top surface and penetration towards the substrate. In this regard, the intrinsic mechanical properties of the substrate are pointed out as key feature for rationalizing the experimental findings.
