Abstract

Tests of the T, CP and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system are performed by the direct comparison of the probabilities of a kaon transition process to its symmetry-conjugate. The exchange of in and out states required for a genuine test involving an antiunitary transformation implied by time-reversal is implemented exploiting the entanglement of K0K‾0 pairs produced at a ϕ-factory.A data sample collected by the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb−1 is analysed to study the Δt distributions of the ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π±e∓ν and ϕ→KSKL→π±e∓ν3π0 processes, with Δt the difference of the kaon decay times. A comparison of the measured Δt distributions in the asymptotic region Δt≫τS allows to test for the first time T and CPT symmetries in kaon transitions with a precision of few percent, and to observe CP violation with this novel method.

Abstract

Abstract The ratio R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = Γ(K S → πeν)/Γ(K S → π + π − ) has been measured with a sample of 300 million K S mesons produced in ϕ → K L K S decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e + e − collider. K S → πeν events are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of K L → πeν decays are used to evaluate signal selection efficiencies. With 49647±316 signal events we measure R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = (1.0421 ± 0.0066stat ± 0.0075syst) × 10 −3. The combination with our previous measurement gives R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = (1.0338 ± 0.0054stat ± 0.0064syst) × 10 −3. From this value we derive the branching fraction B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (K S → πeν) = (7.153 ± 0.037stat ± 0.044syst) × 10 −4 and f +(0)|V us | = 0.2170 ± 0.009.

Abstract

Abstract The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process ϕ → KSKL → π + π − π + π − , which exhibits the characteristic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into π + π − at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb −1, i.e. to about 1.7 × 109 ϕ → KSKL decays produced. From the fit of the observed ∆t distribution, being ∆t the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which — in the most optimistic scenarios — quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models.

Abstract

Abstract Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb −1 e + e − collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, a search for the P- and CP-violating decay η → π + π − has been performed. Radiative ϕ → ηγ decay is exploited to access the η mesons. No signal is observed in the π + π − invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90% confidence level is determined to be ℬ(η → π + π − ) < 4.9 × 10 −6, which is approximately three times smaller than the previous KLOE result. From the combination of these two measurements we get ℬ(η → π + π − ) < 4.4 × 10 −6 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Based on a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in ϕ→KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e+e− collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay KS→πμν. The KS mesons are identified by the interaction of KL mesons in the detector. The KS→πμν decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of KL→πμν decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds 7223±180 signal events. Normalising to the KS→π+π− decay events the result for the branching fraction is B(KS→πμν)=(4.56±0.11stat±0.17syst)×10−4. It is the first measurement of this decay mode and the result allows an independent determination of |Vus| and a test of the lepton-flavour universality. Abstract

We searched for the μ+μ− decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the e+e−→μ+μ−γISR process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93 fb−1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible μ+μ− background. A 90% CL limit on the ratio ε2=α′/α between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of 3×10−6–2×10−7 has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in e+e−→π+π−γISR events. The combined 90% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the ρ–ω interference region and excludes ε2 greater than (13−2)×10−7. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8 ×10−7 resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments. Abstract

Abstract Using 1.63 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the KLOE experiment about 7 × 104 K S → π ± e ∓ ν decays have been reconstructed. The measured value of the charge asymmetry for this decay is A S = (−4.9 ± 5.7stat ± 2.6syst) × 10−3, which is almost twice more precise than the previous KLOE result. The combination of these two measurements gives A S = (−3.8 ± 5.0stat ± 2.6syst) × 10−3 and, together with the asymmetry of the K L semileptonic decay, provides significant tests of the CPT symmetry. The obtained results are in agreement with CPT invariance.

Abstract

Abstract The three precision measurements of the cross section σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)) using initial state radiation by the KLOE collaboration provide an important input for the prediction of the hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)). We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range 0.10 < s < 0.95 GeV2 of a μ π + π − = 489.8 ± 1.7 stat ± 4.8 s y s × 10 − 10 $$ {a}_{\mu}^{\pi^{+}{\pi}^{-}}=\left(489.8\pm {1.7}_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm {4.8}_{\mathrm{sys}}\right)\times {10}^{-10} $$ . Abstract

The existence of a new force beyond the Standard Model is compelling because it could explain several striking astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. We searched for the light vector mediator of this dark force, the U boson, with the KLOE detector at the DAΦNE e+e− collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 1.54 fb−1, we studied the process e+e−→Uγ, with U→e+e−, using radiative return to search for a resonant peak in the dielectron invariant-mass distribution. We did not find evidence for a signal, and set a 90% CL upper limit on the mixing strength between the Standard Model photon and the dark photon, ε2, at 10−6–10−4 in the 5–520 MeV/c2 mass range.

14. Search for dark Higgsstrahlung in e+e−→μ+μ− and missing energy events with the KLOE experiment

Abstract

We have studied the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay ϕ→ηe+e−, with η→π0π0π0, with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE. The data set of 1.7 fb−1 of e+e− collisions at s∼Mϕ contains a clear conversion decay signal of ∼31,000 events from which we measured a value of BR(ϕ→ηe+e−)=(1.075±0.007±0.038)×10−4. The same sample is used to determine the transition form factor by a fit to the e+e− invariant mass spectrum, obtaining bϕη=(1.28±0.10−0.08+0.09) GeV−2, that improves by a factor of five the precision of the previous measurement and is in good agreement with VMD expectations. Abstract

The absolute branching ratio of the K+→π+π−π+(γ) decay, inclusive of final-state radiation, has been measured using ∼17 million tagged K+ mesons collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory. The result is:BR(K+→π+π−π+(γ))=0.05565±0.00031stat±0.00025syst a factor ≃ 5 more precise with respect to the previous result. Abstract

We have searched for a light vector boson U, the possible carrier of a “dark force”, with the KLOE detector at the DAΦNE e+e− collider, motivated by astrophysical evidence for the presence of dark matter in the Universe. Using e+e− collisions collected with an integrated luminosity of 239.3 pb−1, we look for a dimuon mass peak in the reaction e+e−→μ+μ−γ, corresponding to the decay U→μ+μ−. We find no evidence for a U vector boson signal. We set a 90% CL upper limit for the mixing parameter squared between the photon and the U boson of 1.6×10−5 to 8.6×10−7 for the mass region 520

Abstract

Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb$^{-1}$ $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$\Phi$NE, the Frascati $\phi$-factory, a search for the $P$- and $CP$-violating decay $\eta\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ has been performed. Radiative $\phi\to\eta\gamma$ decay is exploited to access the $\eta$ mesons. No signal is observed in the $\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90\% confidence level is determined to be ${\mathcal B}(\eta\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}), Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the CLFV neutrino-less coherent conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. The observation of this process would be the evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Mu2e comprises a straw-tracker, an electromagnetic calorimeter and an external veto for cosmic rays. The calorimeter provides electron identification, a fast trigger and aids track reconstruction. It is a state-of-the-art crystal calorimeter and employs 1340 pure CsI crystals readout by UV-extended SiPM and fast electronics. The design consists of two identical annular disks positioned at the relative distance of 70 cm downstream the target.The hostile Mu2e conditions (total ionizing dose of 12 krad and a neutron fluence of 5 × 1010 n/cm2 @ 1 MeVeq (Si)/y, 1 T magnetic field and vacuum level of 10−4 Torr) posed tight constraints on the mechanical structures and materials choice. The support structure of the two crystal matrices employs two aluminum hollow rings and parts made of open-cell vacuum-compatible carbon fiber. SiPMs and front-end electronics for each crystal are assembled in one mechanical unit inserted in a machined copper holder. The units are supported by a plate made of vacuum-compatible material. The plate integrates the cooling system made of a network of copper lines flowing a low temperature fluid and placed in thermal contact with the copper holders. The DAQ is hosted in aluminum crates positioned on the lateral surface of the disks. The crates also integrate the DAQ electronics cooling system. We review the constraints on the calorimeter structures design, the development of all the structural components, including the simulations that have determined the materials and technological choices and the specifications of the cooling station, components production and quality assurance tests, the procedures for detector assembly, transportation and installation in the experimental area.

Abstract

Objective: Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP) is a disease that features a mechanical dysfunction involving chronic inflammation and altered tissue remodeling. In this study, we aim to evaluate the fibroblast morphology and its cellular traction force in primary fibroblasts cell cultures obtained from both healthy individuals (n = 7) and patients with CRSwNP (n = 8). Methods: Using a Traction-force Microscopy we analyzed parameters of Force/Tension in fibroblasts cultures in both experimental groups. Results: The analysis of the Projected Area of Cell revealed that fibroblasts derived from nasal mucosa of healthy individuals have an area on average 39.24% larger than the fibroblasts obtained from the nasal polyp tissue. We also observed that the parameters directly related to the force of the cell, Max Cumulative Force and Net Contractile Moment, presented a high Force/Tension per unit of area in the fibroblasts derived from the healthy nasal mucosa (on average 41% and 52.54% higher than the fibroblasts of the nasal polyp respectively). Conclusion: Our results demonstrate a cellular mechanism that may be associated with the mechanical dysfunction found in the Nasal Polyp tissue. The weak traction force of nasal polyp-derived fibroblast may, in lower dimensions, impact on the remodeling of nasal mucosa in CRSwNP. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Based on a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in ϕ→KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e+e− collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay KS→πμν. The KS mesons are identified by the interaction of KL mesons in the detector. The KS→πμν decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of KL→πμν decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds 7223±180 signal events. Normalising to the KS→π+π− decay events the result for the branching fraction is B(KS→πμν)=(4.56±0.11stat±0.17syst)×10−4. It is the first measurement of this decay mode and the result allows an independent determination of |Vus| and a test of the lepton-flavour universality.

Abstract

Knockout of multifunction gene cysteine- and glycine-rich protein 3 (CSRP3) in cardiomyocytes (CMs) of mice leads to heart dilation, severely affecting its functions. In humans, CSRP3 mutations are associated with hypertrophic (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The absence of the CSRP3 expression produces unknown effects on in vitro neonatal CMs’ metabolism. The metabolome changes in culture media conditioned by CSRP3 knockout (KO-CSRP3), and wild type (WT) neonatal cardiomyocytes were investigated under untreated or after metabolic challenging conditions produced by isoproterenol (ISO) stimulation, by in vitro high-resolution proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS)-based metabolomics. Metabolic differences between neonatal KO-CSRP3 and WT rats’ CMs were identified. After 72 h of culture, ISO administration was associated with increased CMs’ energy requirements and increased levels of threonine, alanine, and 3-hydroxybutyrate in both neonatal KO-CSRP3 and WT CMs conditioned media. When compared with KO-CSRP3, culture media derived from WT cells presented higher lactate concentrations either under basal or ISO-stimulated conditions. The higher activity of ketogenic biochemical pathways met the elevated energy requirements of the contractile cells. Both cells are considered phenotypically indistinguishable in the neonatal period of animal lives, but the observed metabolic stress responses of KO-CSRP3 and WT CMs to ISO were different. KO-CSRP3 CMs produced less lactate than WT CMs in both basal and stimulated conditions. Mainly, ISO-stimulated conditions produced evidence for lactate overload within KO-CSRP3 CMs, while WT CMs succeeded to manage the metabolic stress. Thus, 1H-MRS-based metabolomics was suitable to identify early inefficient energetic metabolism in neonatal KO-CSRP3 CMs. These results may reflect an apparent lower lactate transport and consumption, in association with protein catabolism.

Abstract

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the charged-lepton flavor violating neutrino-less conversion of a negative muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. The Mu2e detector is composed of a tracker, an electromagnetic calorimeter and an external veto for cosmic rays. The calorimeter plays an important role in providing excellent particle identification capabilities and a fast online trigger filter, while aiding the track reconstruction capabilities. Calorimeter requirements are to provide a large acceptance for 0∼10 MeV electrons and reach: I) a time resolution better than 0.5 ns; ii) an energy resolution better than 10%; and iii) a position resolution of 1 cm. The calorimeter consists of two disks, each one made of 674 pure CsI crystals. Each crystal is readout by two large area 2×3 arrays of UV-extended SiPMs of 6×6 mm2 dimensions. A large scale prototype (Module-0) has been tested at an electron beam. We report here the tests done to finalize the calorimeter design, the results obtained with Module-0 and the status of production. At this time, the performance characteristics of 85% of the crystals and all of the SiPMs have been measured. The calorimeter engineering drawings have been completed and the large mechanical components are under fabrication. Analog and digital electronics have been prototyped and tested with irradiation dose. Their serial production is being organized. The calorimeter assembly phase is planned for mid-2020.

Abstract

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab searches for the coherent neutrino-less muon to electron conversion in the Coulomb field of an aluminum nucleus. This charged-lepton flavor violating process is characterized by a distinctive signature of a mono-energetic electron ( ∼ 105 MeV/c) and its observation will be a clear signature of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The Mu2e goal is to improve by four orders of magnitude the search sensitivity with respect to the previous experiments. The Mu2e detector is composed of a tracker, an electromagnetic calorimeter and an external veto for cosmic rays. The calorimeter plays an important role in providing excellent particle identification capabilities, a fast online trigger filter while aiding the track reconstruction capabilities. It consists of 1348 pure CsI crystals divided in two annular disks, each one readout by two large area Silicon Photomultipliers. A large scale prototype has been tested with an electron beam , demonstrating to largely satisfy the Mu2e requirements. At the moment of writing, the crystals and SiPMs production phase is halfway through the completion. An overview of the characterization tests is reported, together with a description of the final mechanical and electronical design.

Abstract

The three precision measurements of the cross section σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)) using initial state radiation by the KLOE collaboration provide an important input for the prediction of the hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)). We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range 0.10 < s < 0.95 GeV2 of $$ {a}_{\mu}^{\pi^{+}{\pi}^{-}}=\left(489.8\pm {1.7}_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm {4.8}_{\mathrm{sys}}\right)\times {10}^{-10} $$ a μ π + π − = 489.8 ± 1.7 stat ± 4.8 s y s × 10 − 10 . Abstract

We propose an evolution of the Mu2e experiment, called Mu2e-II, that would leverage advances in detector technology and utilize the increased proton intensity provided by the Fermilab PIP-II upgrade to improve the sensitivity for neutrinoless muon-to-electron conversion by one order of magnitude beyond the Mu2e experiment, providing the deepest probe of charged lepton flavor violation in the foreseeable future. Mu2e-II will use as much of the Mu2e infrastructure as possible, providing, where required, improvements to the Mu2e apparatus to accommodate the increased beam intensity and cope with the accompanying increase in backgrounds.

Abstract

We searched for the $\mu^+\mu^-$ decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the $e^+ e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $\phi$-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible $\mu^+ \mu^-$ background. A 90\% CL limit on the ratio $\varepsilon^2=\alpha^{\prime}/\alpha$ between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of $ 3\times 10^{-6}-2\times 10^{-7}$ has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in $e^+ e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ events. The combined 90\% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the $\rho-\omega$ interference region and excludes $\varepsilon^2$ greater than $(13-2)\times 10^{-7}$. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8~$\times\, 10^{-7}$ resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

The absolute branching ratio of the K+ -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(+) (gamma) decay, inclusive of final-state radiation, has been measured using similar to 17 million tagged K+ mesons collected with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory. The result is: BR(K+ -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(+) (gamma)) = 0.05565 +/- 0.00031(stat) +/- 0.00025(syst) a factor similar or equal to 5 more precise with respect to the previous result. This work completes the program of precision measurements of the dominant kaon branching ratios at KLOE.

Abstract

We have searched for a light vector boson U, the possible carrier of a "dark force", with the KLOE detector at the DA Phi NE e(+)e(-) collider, motivated by astrophysical evidence for the presence of dark matter in the Universe. Using e(+)e(-) collisions collected with an integrated luminosity of 239.3 pb(-1), we look for a dimuon mass peak in the reaction e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma, corresponding to the decay U -> mu(+)mu(-). We find no evidence for a U vector boson signal. We set a 90% CL upper limit for the mixing parameter squared between the photon and the U boson of 1.6 x 10(-5) to 8.6 x 10(-7) for the mass region 520 < m(U) < 980 MeV.

Abstract

The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in particle physics and a persistent discrepancy of about 3 σ between standard model (SM) prediction and the experimental measurement has been observed. The leading order contribution aμhlo is actually the main source of uncertainty in the theoretical evaluation of the muon anomaly. It is obtained by a dispersion integral using the precision measurement of hadronic cross section. The KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ−factory in Frascati was the first to exploit Initial State Radiation (ISR) processes to obtain the e+e−→π+π−(γ) cross section below 1 GeV, that accounts for most (70%) of the leading order contribution to the muon anomaly. In year 2005 and 2008 the KLOE-collaboration has published two measurements of the π+π− cross section with the photon in the initial state emitted at small angle, and an independent measurement with the photon emitted at large angle was finalized in year 2011. These measurements were normalized using luminosity from Bhabha. In the last years, a new analysis of KLOE data has been performed for obtaining the pion form factor directly from the bin-by-bin π+π−γ to μ+μ−γ ratio. We present the results of this new measurement, showing the comparison with our previous measurements, and its impact on the hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly.

Abstract

The gravitational and cosmological evidence of dark matter (DM) as the dominant, 85% fraction of the matter in the Universe still remains, after 50 years of investigation, the only rm experimental evidence of DM, although some puzzling measurements from astroparticle experiments could be explained in terms of DM scattering on nuclei or DM annihilation. The thermal relic abundance of DM implies small couplings with the SM, main feature of the standard WIMP scenario, whose DM candidate is a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) with mass from 10−10 GeV. Some non-WIMP DMmodels postulate the existence of a dark gauge symmetry U(1)D [1] giving rise to a secluded sector with mediating bosons (dark photons), fermions, and scalar elds for the spontaneous breaking of the symmetry (dark higgs elds). In general, the phenomenology relating to the dark sector, especially in the case mU < mDM, is really di erent from the standard WIMP scenario. Some of the secluded sectors can be tested at the e e− colliders searching for vector or scalar particles at the GeV scale [2]. A DM sector mediated by a light dark photon with mass mU ≤ 1 GeV could explain both, the positron excess measured by the balloon-borne experiments HEAT [3] and PAMELA [4] and by AMS-02 on the International Space Station [5], and the measurement of the antiproton ux [6] that is instead in agreement with the abundance expected from secondary production in the interstellar medium (ISM) interactions of the primary cosmic rays. In this case, the kinetic mixing parameter of the dark photon with the γ/Z boson is expected to be of O(10−4−10−2), a range of couplings that can be studied at the φ and B factories. A light dark photon could be observed in a variety of nal states, among which are: (i) sharp resonance at mU in the invariant mass distribution of charged lepton or pion pairs, in e e− → γl+l− or V → Pl+l− reactions, where V (P ) stands for any vector (pseudoscalar) meson, and l± for muons, electrons or charged pions; (ii) dark-higgsstrahlung processes [7]

Abstract

Many galactic and extragalactic astrophysical sources are currently considered promising candidates as high energy neutrino emitters. Astrophysical neutrinos can be detected as upward-going muons produced in charged-current interactions with the medium surrounding the detector. The expected neutrino fluxes from various models start to dominate on the atmospheric neutrino background at neutrino energies above some tens of TeV. We present the results of a search for an excess of high energy upward-going muons among the sample of data collected by MACRO during ~5.8 years of effective running time. No significant evidence for this signal was found. As a consequence, an upper limit on the flux of upward-going muons from high-energy neutrinos was set at the level of 1.7 10^(-14) cm^(-2) s^(-1) sr^(-1). The corresponding upper limit for the diffuse neutrino flux was evaluated assuming a neutrino power law spectrum. Abstract

We have carried out a new direct search for the CP violating decay K-S -> 3 pi(0) with 1.7 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collisions collected by the KLOE detector at the Phi-factory DA Phi NE. We have searched for this decay in a sample of about 5.9 x 10(8) KSKL events tagging the K-S by means of the K-L interaction in the calorimeter and requiring six prompt photons. With respect to our previous search, the analysis has been improved by increasing of a factor four the tagged sample and by a more effective background rejection of fake K-S tags and spurious clusters. We find no candidates in data and simulated background samples, while we expect 0.12 standard model events. Normalizing to the number of K-S -> 2 pi(0) events in the same sample, we set the upper limit on BR(K-S -> 3 pi(0))

Abstract

We have measured the ratio cr (e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma)/sigma(e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma), with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE for a total integrated luminosity of similar to 240 pb(-1). From this ratio we obtain the cross section sigma (e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma). From the cross section we determine the pion form factor vertical bar F-pi vertical bar(2) and the two-pion contribution to the muon anomaly a(mu) for 0.592< M-pi pi < 0.975 GeV, Delta(pi pi) a(mu) = (385.1 +/- 1.1(stat) +/- 2.7(sys+theo)) x 10(-10). This result confirms the current discrepancy between the Standard Model calculation and the experimental measurement of the muon anomaly. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The ratio R-eta = Gamma(eta -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma)/Gamma(eta -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)) has been measured by analysing 22 million phi -> eta gamma decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DANE, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb(-1). The eta -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma proceeds both via the rho resonant contribution, and possibly a non-resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Our result, R-eta = 0.1856 +/- 0.0005(stat)+/- 0.0028(syst), points out a sizable contribution of the direct term to the total width. The di-pion invariant mass for the eta -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma decay could be described in a model-independent approach in terms of a(-) single free parameter, alpha. The determined value of the parameter alpha is alpha = (1.32 +/- 0.08(stat-0.09syst)(+0.10) +/- 0.02(theo)) GeV-2. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

A measurement of the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay $\phi \to \pi^0 e^+e^-$ with the KLOE experiment is presented. A sample of $\sim 9500$ signal events was selected from a data set of 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} \sim m_{\phi}$ collected at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. These events were used to obtain the first measurement of the transition form factor $| F_{\phi \pi^0}(q^2) |$ and a new measurement of the branching ratio of the decay: $\rm{BR}\,(\phi \to \pi^0 e^+e^-) = (\,1.35 \pm 0.05^{\,\,+0.05}_{\,\,-0.10}\,) \times 10 ^{-5}$. Abstract

The recent interest in a light gauge boson in the framework of an extra U(1) symmetry motivates searches in the mass range below 1 GeV. We present a search for such a particle, the dark photon, in e + e − → U γ , U → π + π − based on 28 million e + e − → π + π − γ events collected at DAΦNE by the KLOE experiment. The π + π − production by initial-state radiation compensates for a loss of sensitivity of previous KLOE U → e + e − , μ + μ − searches due to the small branching ratios in the ρ – ω resonance region. We found no evidence for a signal and set a limit at 90% CL on the mixing strength between the photon and the dark photon, e 2 , in the U mass range between 527 and 987 MeV . Above 700 MeV this new limit is more stringent than previous ones.

Abstract

Using 1.6 fb−1 of e + e − → ϕ → ηγ data collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE, the Dalitz plot distribution for the η → π + π − π 0 decay is studied with the world’s largest sample of ∼ 4.7 · 106 events. The Dalitz plot density is parametrized as a polynomial expansion up to cubic terms in the normalized dimensionless variables X and Y . The experiment is sensitive to all charge conjugation conserving terms of the expansion, including a gX 2 Y term. The statistical uncertainty of all parameters is improved by a factor two with respect to earlier measurements.

The existence of a light dark force mediator has been tested with the KLOE detector at DAPHNE. This particle, called U, is searched for using the decay chain phi-->etaU, eta-->pi+pi-pi0, U-->e+e-. No evidence is found in 1.5 fb-1 of data. The resulting exclusion plot covers the mass range 5, Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

One of the first analysis items is the study of the f radiative decays, which allows us to investigate the nature of light pseudoscalar and scalar mesons. An integrated luminosity of 100 pb−1 is expected for next KLOE run, resulting in 3 × 108 f collected. A detailed simulation and full event reconstruction of both signal and background events indicates a sensitivity reach of 1 ÷ 2% on the branching ratios. Some preliminary studies on real data are also presented, showing a good agreement with MonteCarlo distributions

Abstract

We report the first observation of the rare η → e + e − e + e − ( γ ) decay based on 1.7 fb − 1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ-factory. The selection of the e + e − e + e − final state is fully inclusive of radiation. We have identified 362 ± 29 events resulting in a branching ratio of ( 2.4 ± 0.2 stat + bckg ± 0.1 syst ) × 10 − 5 .

Abstract

We present a measurement of the slope parameter α for the η → 3 π 0 decay, with the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ -factory, based on a background free sample of ∼17 million η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot we determine α = − 0.0301 ± 0.0035 stat − 0.0035 + 0.0022 syst . The result is in agreement with recent measurements from hadro- and photo-production experiments.

45. Determination of Very Slow Diffusion of Paramagnetic Ions by NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new method of measuring the very slow paramagnetic ion diffusion coefficient using a commercial high-resolution spectrometer. If there are distinct paramagnetic ions influencing the hydrogen nuclear magnetic relaxation time differently, their diffusion coefficients can be measured separately. A cylindrical phantom filled with Fricke xylenol gel solution and irradiated with gamma rays was used to validate the method. The Fricke xylenol gel solution was prepared with 270 Bloom porcine gelatin, the phantom was irradiated with gamma rays originated from a 60Co source and a high-resolution 200 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer was used to obtain the phantom 1H profile in the presence of a linear magnetic field gradient. By observing the temporal evolution of the phantom NMR profile, an apparent ferric ion diffusion coefficient of 0.50 μm2/ms due to ferric ions diffusion was obtained. In any medical process where the ionizing radiation is used, the dose planning and the dose delivery are the key elements for the patient safety and success of treatment. These points become even more important in modern conformal radio therapy techniques, such as stereotactic radiosurgery, where the delivered dose in a single session of treatment can be an order of magnitude higher than the regular doses of radiotherapy. Several methods have been proposed to obtain the three-dimensional (3-D) dose distribution. Recently, we proposed an alternative method for the 3-D radiation dose mapping, where the ionizing radiation modifies the local relative concentration of Fe2+/Fe3+ in a phantom containing Fricke gel and this variation is associated to the MR image intensity. The smearing of the intensity gradient is proportional to the diffusion coefficient of the Fe3+ and Fe2+ in the phantom. There are several methods for measurement of the ionic diffusion using NMR, however, they are applicable when the diffusion is not very slow.

Abstract

We have studied the ϕ → a 0 ( 980 ) γ process with the KLOE detector at the Frascati ϕ-factory DAΦNE by detecting the ϕ → η π 0 γ decays in the final states with η → γ γ and η → π + π − π 0 . We have measured the branching ratios for both final states: Br ( ϕ → η π 0 γ ) = ( 7.01 ± 0.10 ± 0.20 ) × 10 − 5 and ( 7.12 ± 0.13 ± 0.22 ) × 10 − 5 , respectively. We have also extracted the a 0 ( 980 ) mass and its couplings to η π 0 , K + K − , and to the ϕ meson from the fit of the η π 0 invariant mass distributions using different phenomenological models.

Abstract

We have searched for the decay ϕ → K 0 K ¯ 0 γ , by detecting K S pairs plus a photon and with the K S -mesons decaying to π + π − , in a sample of about 1.5 × 10 9 ϕ-decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE. The reaction proceeds through the intermediate states f 0 ( 980 ) γ , a 0 ( 980 ) γ . We find five events with 3.2 events expected from background processes. We obtain the upper limit: BR ( ϕ → K 0 K ¯ 0 γ ) 1.9 × 10 − 8 at 90% CL.

Abstract

We have studied the η → π + π − e + e − ( γ ) decay using about 1.7 fb − 1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ -factory. This corresponds to about 72 millions η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. We have measured the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative effects, with 4% accuracy: BR ( η → π + π − e + e − ( γ ) ) = ( 26.8 ± 0.9 Stat . ± 0.7 Syst . ) × 10 − 5 . We have obtained the first measurement of the CP-odd ππ – ee decay planes angular asymmetry, A ϕ = ( − 0.6 ± 2.5 Stat . ± 1.8 Syst . ) × 10 − 2 .

Abstract

We present the result of a direct search for the decay K S → e + e − , obtained with a sample of e + e − → ϕ → K S K L events produced at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, for an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−1. The search has been performed using a pure K S beam tagged by the simultaneous detection of a K L interaction in the calorimeter. Background rejection has been optimized by using both kinematic and particle identification cuts. We find BR ( K S → e + e − ) 9 × 10 − 9 at 90% CL, which improves by an order of magnitude on the previous best limit.

New results concerning the scalar mesons f 0 ( 980 ) produced in the ϕ → π π γ decays, and the a 0 ( 980 ) scalar mesons in the ϕ → a 0 ( 980 ) γ → η π 0 γ decays, are presented.
