Abstract

Nuclear astrophysics, the union of nuclear physics and astronomy, went through an impressive expansion during the last twenty years. This could be achieved thanks to milestone improvements in astronomical observations, cross section measurements, powerful computer simulations and much refined stellar models. Italian groups are giving quite important contributions to every domain of nuclear astrophysics, sometimes being the leaders of worldwide unique experiments. In this paper we will discuss the astrophysical scenarios where nuclear astrophysics plays a key role and we will provide detailed descriptions of the present and future of the experiments on nuclear astrophysics which belong to the scientific programme of INFN (the National Institute for Nuclear Physics in Italy)., Added paragraphs 5.6 and 7.2. 2. O-16 Coulomb dissociation

Abstract

A feasibility study was made of an important aspect of the Coulomb-dissociation method, which has been proposed for the determination of the rate of the astrophysically important C-12(alpha, gamma)160 reaction. A crucial aspect is the disentanglement of nuclear and Coulomb interactions on one hand and the separation of dipole and quadrupole contributions on the other. As a first step the resonant breakup via two well-known 2(+) states of 160 was measured. The differential cross section of Pb-208(O-16, O-16*)Pb-208 and the angular correlations of the fragments C-12 and alpha in the center of mass were measured and compared to theoretical predictions calculated in DWBA and the coupled-channel method. The best agreement was found for the state at 11.52 MeV associated to a one-step excitation from the ground state, while the 9.84 MeV requires coupling to the first-excited 2(+) state and is not well described. Abstract

International audience; Present status of the C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 cross section knowledge at stellar helium-core burning temperature is presented. Its consequences on the reaction rate uncertainties are discussed considering available models to extrapolate experimental results down to stellar helium-core burning temperature. Some experimental perspectives to reach the desired precision at stellar temperatures are described.

5. Annealing of ion implanted 4H-SiC in the temperature range of 100-800 degrees C analysed by ion beam techniques

Abstract

Ion implantation induced damage formation and subsequent annealing in 4H-SiC in the temperature range of 100-800 degrees C has been investigated. Silicon Carbide was implanted at room temperature with 200 key Ar-40 ions with two implantation fluences of 4 x 10(14) and 2 x 10(15) ions/cm(2). The samples were characterized by Rutherford backscattering and nuclear reaction analysis techniques in channeling mode using 2.00 and 4.30 MeV He-4 ion beams for damage buildup and recovery in the Si and C sublattices, respectively. At low ion fluence, the restoration of the Si sublattice is evident already at 200 degrees C and a considerable annealing step occurs between 300 and 400 degrees C. Similar results have been obtained for the C sublattice using the nuclear resonance reaction for carbon, C-12(alpha,alpha)C-12 at 4.26 MeV. For samples implanted with the higher ion fluence, no significant recovery is observed at these temperatures. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved., QC 20110303
