Summary Van der Waals organic/inorganic heterostructures in the two-dimensional (2D) limit with extensive structural tunability will advance the development of artificial solids with tailored functionalities. Recent breakthroughs in several types of 2D organic materials, including molecular monolayer films, 2D polymers, covalent-organic frameworks, and metal oxide frameworks, have greatly enriched the design possibilities of heterostructures with inorganic 2D materials. This review provides a timely summary of the latest advances in synthesis approaches toward advanced organic/inorganic heterostructures, answers the fundamental questions regarding the interfacial interactions in the 2D limit, and further highlights the uses of such organic/inorganic heterostructures in advanced transistors, optoelectronics, neuromorphic, and other multifunctional devices with unique capabilities.

Novel clinical challenges are faced by cardiac surgeons under the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Amidst the uncertainties faced due to the socioeconomic and public health impact, there is little evidence surrounding COVID-19 vaccination in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Timing of vaccination and postvaccination adverse effects are required parameters to discuss with cardiac surgical patients.This is a single-center, retrospective observational study. All patients who underwent adult cardiac surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong from January 2021 to December 2021 were included. Postoperative clinical outcomes, COVID-19 vaccination status, and vaccination-related adverse effects were collected.A total of 426 patients; 117 (27%) underwent isolated coronary artery bypass grafting, 111 (26%) underwent valvular surgery, and 97 (23%) underwent aortic surgery. Patients received either Sinovac CoronaVac or Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine. Overall vaccination rate with at least 1 dose was 52% (n = 212), 15% (n = 63) received the first dose before surgery, 36% (n = 149) received the first dose vaccination after surgery. Rate of completion with second and third doses of vaccination were 22% (n = 89) and 4.9% (n = 20), respectively. The mean timing of first dose of vaccine after surgery was 216 ± 84 days from operation. Three (1.4%) patients recorded vaccination-related complications.COVID-19 vaccination is safe in patients who received major cardiac surgery, with low adverse effects recorded and no vaccine-related mortality observed. A time frame of 3-6 months after cardiac surgery receiving COVID-19 vaccination is reasonable and could serve as a guidance for future COVID-19 vaccination booster programs.

The vitamin D receptor (VDR), in addition to other nuclear receptors, the pregnane X receptor (PXR) and constitutive androstane receptor (CAR), is involved in the regulation of enzymes, transporters and receptors, and therefore intimately affects drug disposition, tissue health, and the handling of endogenous and exogenous compounds. This review examines the role of 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 or calcitriol, the natural VDR ligand, on activation of the VDR and its crosstalk with other nuclear receptors towards the regulation of enzymes and transporters, notably many of the cytochrome P450s including CYP3A4 and sulfotransferase 2A1 (SULT2A1) as well as cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1). Moreover, the VDR upregulates the intestinal channel, TRPV6, for calcium absorption, LDL receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) in brain for β-amyloid peptide efflux and influx, the sodium phosphate transporters (NaPi), the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT) and organic solute transporters (OSTα-OSTβ) for bile acid absorption and efflux, respectively, the renal organic anion transporter 3 (OAT3) and several of the ATP-binding cassette protein transporters—the multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) and the multidrug resistance-associated proteins (MRPs). Hence, the role of the VDR is increasingly being recognized for its therapeutic potential and pharmacologic activity, giving rise to drug-drug interactions (DDI). Therapeutically, ligand-activated VDR shows anti-inflammatory effects towards the suppression of inflammatory mediators, improves cognition by upregulating amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide clearance in brain, and maintains phosphate, calcium, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) balance and kidney function and bone health, demonstrating the crucial roles of the VDR in disease progression and treatment of diseases.

Here, we use time-resolved optical spectroscopy to show that free charges in these systems are generated by thermally activated dissociation of interfacial charge-transfer states that occurs over hundreds of picoseconds at room temperature, three orders of magnitude slower than comparable fullerene-based systems. Upon free electron–hole encounters at later times, both charge-transfer states and emissive excitons are regenerated, thus setting up an equilibrium between excitons, charge-transfer states and free charges. Our results suggest that the formation of long-lived and disorder-free charge-transfer states in these systems enables them to operate closely to quasi-thermodynamic conditions with no requirement for energy offsets to drive interfacial charge separation and achieve suppressed non-radiative recombination.

Summary Multi-component organic solar cells (OSCs) comprising more than two donor and acceptor materials have attracted significant research attention, as they can offer broader and better absorption, hence increasing solar cell performance. However, the morphology of multi-component OSCs is exceptionally complicated and challenging to control. Here, we develop a highly efficient (near 17.7%) quaternary OSC (q-OSC) using two polymer donors (namely PM6 and PTQ10) along with a fullerene (PC71BM) and a non-fullerene acceptor (N3). Our quaternary system demonstrates a new type of “rivers and streams” functional hierarchical (multi-length scale) morphology, where small domains of PTQ10 and PC71BM act as separators that spatially separate PM6 and N3, which effectively suppressed charge recombination, enhanced hole transport, and balanced charge transportation. These improvements in the quaternary system contribute to the increased internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and, thus, lead to an excellent JSC and device performance, which surpass their respective binary and ternary OSCs.

Calcitriol or 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2 D3 ] is the active ligand of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) that plays a vital role in health and disease. Vitamin D is converted to the relatively inactive metabolite, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3 ], by CYP27A1 and CYP2R1 in the liver, then to 1,25(OH)2 D3 by a specific, mitochondrial enzyme, CYP27B1 (1α-hydroxylase) that is present primarily in the kidney. The degradation of both metabolites is mostly carried out by the more ubiquitous mitochondrial enzyme, CYP24A1. Despite the fact that calcitriol inhibits its formation and degradation, allometric scaling revealed strong interspecies correlation of the net calcitriol clearance (CL estimated from dose/AUC∞ ), production rate (PR), and basal, plasma calcitriol concentration with body weight (BW). PBPK-PD (physiologically based pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic) modeling confirmed the dynamic interactions between calcitriol and Cyp27b1/Cyp24a1 on the decrease in the PR and increase in CL in mice. Close scrutiny of the literature revealed that basal levels of calcitriol had not been taken into consideration for estimating the correct AUC∞ and CL after exogenous calcitriol dosing in both animals and humans, leading to an overestimation of AUC∞ and underestimation of the plasma CL. In humans, CL was decreased in chronic kidney disease but increased in cancer. Collectively, careful pharmacokinetic data analysis and improved definition are achieved with PBPK-PD modeling, which embellishes the complexity of dose, enzyme regulation, and disease conditions. Allometric scaling and PBPK-PD modeling were applied successfully to extend the PBPK model to predict calcitriol kinetics in cancer patients.

Effective ternary material systems are usually achieved using a donor/acceptor guest that is structurally similar to the donor/acceptor host to maintain the film-morphology of the host binary blend. In this study, we report an unprecedented ternary material system, PBDB-TF:PBDB-T-SF:Y6, in which PBDB-T-SF is selected as the donor polymer guest of the PBDB-TF:Y6 binary blend. The absorption spectra of both polymers are almost overlapped and their energy levels are similar. However, the side-chains between the host (PBDB-TF) and the guest (PBDB-T-SF) are oriented differently, which modulates the morphology of the polymer phases from nanoscale (10–20 nm) fine fibrils in the host binary blend to an interpenetrating mesoscale polymer-crowd (>100 nm) with reduced phase crystallinity in the ternary blend. As a result, the electrical properties of the active layer are greatly improved: the hole mobility increases more than the electron mobility, resulting in balanced hole and electron mobilities; the monomolecular and bimolecular recombinations are both reduced; the charge carrier extraction is faster and the trap-assisted recombination is reduced, resulting in a longer recombination lifetime of charge carriers (0.19 μs vs. 0.15/0.11 μs). All of these contribute to the concurrently increased device fill-factor and short-circuit current-density, and finally improved efficiency (16.4%). Solid-state 19F magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic microscopy is conducted to probe interaction between the host and guest donor polymers. This study demonstrates that mesoscale morphology such as the polymer-crowd induced by differently oriented side chains of the host–guest polymers can be a morphological feature of active layer toward high-efficiency organic photovoltaic cells.

Managing the dynamics of spin-triplet electronic states is crucial for achieving high-performance organic photovoltaics. Here we show that the replacement of fullerene with non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) molecules leads to suppression of triplet recombination and thus more efficient charge generation. This indicates that the relaxation of charges to the local triplet exciton state, although energetically allowed, is outcompeted by the thermally activated separation of interfacial charge-transfer excitons (CTEs) in the NFA-based system. By rationalizing our results with Marcus theory, we propose that triplet recombination in the fullerene system is driven by the small energy difference and strong electronic couplings between the CTE state and the lowest-lying triplet exciton state (T1) of fullerene acceptor molecules. In contrast, the large energy difference and small electronic couplings between these states in the NFA-based blends lead to sufficiently slow triplet relaxation rate compared to the charge separation rate (≪1010 s-1), thus preventing triplet recombination.
