The age of the push moraine complex Wallsbüll-Böxlund, Schleswig-Holstein, is unclear despite investigations in this area for decades. To address the timing of formation of both the push moraine complex and the peat and soils found in its depressions, an outcrop in Osterbylund (OBL) was investigated. Optically stimulated luminescence and 230Th/U dating, as well as pollen analyses, were undertaken with the aim to correlate the soils OBL 1 to OBL 4 to interglacials and interstadials. The chronological studies were accompanied by detailed sedimentological investigations. The results of the pollen analyses put the peat unambiguously to the Eemian; the peat is equivalent to OBL 1. The overlying sands and the other intercalated soils are to be placed into the early Weichselian. While for OBL 2 the assignment to the Brörup interstadial is clear, it is more difficult to clearly correlate OBL 3 and OBL 4 to an interstadial due to poor luminescence signal resetting of the sands, especially above OBL 4. Considering all data available, it is most likely that OBL 3 formed during the Odderade interstadial and OBL 4 during the Keller interstadial. From the Eemian to early Weichselian ages of the peat and soils it is evident that the push moraine complex is of Saalian age; a Weichselian ice margin further in the west, as assumed in other studies, can therefore be excluded.

The Paris Agreement has underlined the role of cities in combating climate change. The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) is the largest international initiative dedicated to promoting climate action at a city level, covering globally over 10 000 cities and almost half the population of the European Union (EU) by end of March 2020. The fifth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report notes that there is a lack of comprehensive, consistent datasets of cities' greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventories. In order to partly address this gap, we present a harmonised, complete and verified dataset of GHG inventories for 6200 cities in European and Southern Mediterranean countries, signatories of the GCoM initiative. To complement the reported emission data, a set of ancillary data that have a direct or indirect potential impact on cities' climate action plans were collected from other datasets, supporting further research on local climate action and monitoring the EU 27 (the 27 member states of the EU) progress on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on climate action. Loess-paleosol sequences (LPSs) are essential records for reconstructing Quaternary paleoenvironments. No previous study has provided numerical chronologies of loess in Lower Franconia, southern Germany; their chronostratigraphic assumptions have relied mainly on German (pedo)stratigraphic schemes. In this study, we provide for the first time a chronology for LPSs in Lower Franconia based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating using quartz and a comparison of K-feldspar (63–100 µm) and the polymineral fraction (4–11 µm). Our results show that all obtained ages are in stratigraphic order, ranging from Holocene to late Pleistocene, and in general confirm the former stratigraphical interpretations. A good agreement of the obtained ages is observed between both feldspar grain size fractions; they also agree well with the quartz OSL ages up to ∼50 ka. However, a marked difference between the growth pattern of the dose response curves and consequently different saturation characteristics of fine and coarse grains is found. Even though in our samples the discrepancy in ages is not very significant, we suggest the use of coarse-grained K-feldspar whenever possible in order to not be confronted with unknowns such as the mineral composition of the polymineral fraction.

In this study, we analyze Sentinel-1 time series data to characterize the observed seasonality of different land cover classes in eastern Thuringia, Germany and to identify multi-temporal metrics for their classification. We assess the influence of different polarizations and different pass directions on the multi-temporal backscatter profile. The novelty of this approach is the determination of phenological parameters, based on a tool that has been originally developed for optical imagery. Furthermore, several additional multitemporal metrics are determined for the different classes, in order to investigate their separability for potential multi-temporal classification schemes. The results of the study show a seasonality for vegetation classes, which differs depending on the considered class: whereas pastures and broad-leaved forests show a decrease of the backscatter in VH polarization during summer, an increase of the backscatter in VH polarization is observed for coniferous forest. The observed seasonality is discussed together with meteorological information (precipitation and air temperature). Furthermore, a dependence of the backscatter of the pass direction (ascending/descending) is observed particularly for the urban land cover classes. Multi-temporal metrics indicate a good separability of principal land cover classes such as urban, agricultural and forested areas, but further investigation and use of seasonal parameters is needed for a distinct separation of specific forest sub-classes such as coniferous and deciduous.

Many RNA systems possess highly ordered 3-D structures that are essential to their function. Here the authors demonstrate that the long non-coding RNA Braveheart possesses a flexible but defined 3-D structure which is remodeled upon binding the protein CNBP.

Investigators evaluated feasibility, acceptability, and sustainability of a teledentistry pilot program within a children's hospital network between March, 2018, and April, 2019. The program connected dentists to medical personnel and patients being treated in urgent care clinics, a primary care clinic, and a freestanding emergency department via synchronous video consultation. Three separate but parallel questionnaires evaluated caregiver, medical personnel, and dentist perspectives on the experience. Utilization of teledentistry was very low (2%, 14/826 opportunities), but attitudes regarding this service were largely positive among all groups involved and across all survey domains. Uptake of new technology has barriers but teledentistry may be an acceptable service, especially in the case of dental trauma.

Low cost UAV systems are a flexible and mobile platform for very detailed spatial high-resolution point cloud and surface height mapping projects. This study investigates the potential of the DJI Phantom 4 Pro 3D point clouds and derived crown surface height information in combination with RGB spectral information for mapping of deciduous tree species in the Hainich national park area. RGB image data was captured in August, early October and November 2018 to create a multi seasonal spectral dataset for a 100 ha test area. The flight campaigns were controlled from the Hainich flux tower platform in 40 m height owned and operated by University of Göttingen in the central part of the park area. Absolut georeferencing accuracy of the datasets was improved using 7 DGPS measured control points within the stand structure on small forest clearings. Image files and ground control points were processed to a dense point cloud model with 2.6 billion points (approximately 200k points per tree crown object) using the Agisoft Metashape cluster processing environment. Additionally, a digital surface model and a true ortho image mosaic with 3 cm spatial resolution was generated. For the differentiation of deciduous tree species, a reference data set with coordinates for the tree species Fagus sylvatica (beech), Fraxinus excelsior (ash), Acer pseudoplatanus (sycamore maple), Carpinus betulus (hornbeam) and dead trees and early defoliated trees was defined. The study site is however dominated by Fagus sylvatica and Fraxinus excelsior. We studied two different groups of features: tree crown surface height variability parameters using point cloud densities, point cloud height variance, local standard deviation of gaussian curvature, standard deviation of local point cloud roughness and multi temporal normalised spectral features using multi seasonal uncalibrated UAV RGB data. Analysis of feature separability showed that very high-resolution point cloud surface curvature properties with small neighbourhood radii can differentiate some tree species types but we also found multitemporal spectral ratios based on RGB data to be very successful in differentiating the main tree species.Results of this work show that super fine very dense point cloud models and derived roughness measures of mixed forest stand surfaces hold valuable information for deciduous species discrimination and will likely also be very useful for morphological analysis of tree crown types.

Biogas upgrading to biomethane is a feasible option for greening the European energy sector, and specifically transport. Bio-CNG and bio-LNG fuels are considered a valid solutions for freight, and the European biomethane sector displays an interesting production potential, supported by a growing demand. A key asset for sector deployment is represented by an appropriate refuelling infrastructure.To promote alternative fuels in the EU, Member States have been adopting national policy frameworks (NPFs), setting targets for 2020–2030. This work aims to investigate how bottlenecks, such as infrastructure fragmentation, can hamper the diffusion of alternative fuels. The NPFs analysis reveals divergent countries' expectations for natural gas in transport, leading to a possible infrastructure fragmentation.Pushing biomethane to decarbonise transport requires a careful assessment: while it can potentially reduce GHG emissions, it can also trigger fugitive emissions, e.g. through gas transport and combustion, thus compromising the advantages. Additionally, current high costs can restrain a larger diffusion of this alternative fuel.This study highlights the need of a policy perspective aiming to target a synchronised deployment of CNG and LNG vehicles, related refuelling infrastructure and bio-CNG/LNG production. This is paramount to prevent the infrastructure from becoming a barrier to the development of biomethane, at least as in the short-to medium-term.

A basic requirement for reconstructing past environmental change is accurate understanding of sediment age. Here, the authors show that the interpretation of a benchmark archive in China has been inaccurate, and that ice volume primarily controls desert dynamics, sediment preservation, and precipitation at the site.

The sensing characteristics and long-term stability of different kinds of CO ∕ HC gas sensors (non-Nernstian mixed potential type) during in situ operation in flue gas from different types of low-power combustion systems (wood-log- and wood-chip-fuelled) were investigated. The sensors showed representative but individual sensing behaviour with respect to characteristically varying flue gas composition over the combustion process. The long-term sensor signal stability evaluated by repeated exposure to CO ∕ H2 ∕ N2 ∕ synthetic air mixtures showed no sensitivity loss after operation in the flue gas. Particularly for one of the sensors (Heraeus GmbH), this high signal stability was observed in a field test experiment even during continuous operation in the flue gas of the wood-chip firing system over 4 months. Furthermore, it was experimentally shown that the signals of these CO ∕ HC sensing elements yield important additional information about the wood combustion process. This was demonstrated by the adaptation of an advanced combustion airstream control algorithm on a wood-log-fed fireplace and by the development of a combustion quality monitoring system for wood-chip-fed central heaters.

Abstract Background Daysy is a fertility monitor that uses the fertility awareness method by tracking and analyzing the individual menstrual cycle. In addition, Daysy can be connected to the application DaysyView to transfer stored personal data from Daysy to a smartphone or tablet (IOS, Android). This combination is interesting because as it is shown in various studies, the use of apps is increasing patients´ focus on their disease or their health behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate if by the additional use of an App and thereby improved usability of the medical device, it is possible to enhance the typical-use related as well as the method-related pregnancy rates. Result In the resultant group of 125 women (2076 cycles in total), 2 women indicated that they had been unintentionally pregnant during the use of the device, giving a typical-use related Pearl-Index of 1.3. Counting only the pregnancies which occurred as a result of unprotected intercourse during the infertile (green) phase, we found 1 pregnancy, giving a method-related Pearl-Index of 0.6. Calculating the pregnancy rate resulting from continuous use and unprotected intercourse exclusively on green days, gives a perfect-use Pearl-Index of 0.8. Conclusion It seems that combining a specific biosensor-embedded device (Daysy), which gives the method a very high repeatable accuracy, and a mobile application (DaysyView) which leads to higher user engagement, results in higher overall usability of the method.

By fitting a cylinder to the helix axis, these elements are carried over into a coarse-grained 3D structure representation. Integration with Biopython allows for handling of all-atom 3D information. forgi can deal with a variety of file formats including dotbracket strings, PDB and MMCIF files. We can handle modified residues, missing residues, cofold and multifold structures as well as nucleotide numbers starting at arbitrary positions. We apply this library to the study of stacking helices in junctions and pseudoknots and investigate how far stacking helices in solved experimental structures can divert from coaxial geometries.

Seismic performance and loss assessments are required in areas of Insurance, Finance and Public Policy. Providers are Structural Engineers and Risk Management Firms. There are no current procedures to evaluate the epistemic and aleatory uncertainties for such assessments. The essential issue is whether or not there is sufficient reliability in the result to use the result as the basis for risk management decisions and actions. For a single building this may be whether or not a prescribed earthquake performance level is met, life safety or if a portfolio’s vulnerability level is acceptable, whether the. loss for a given time period is less than a stated value. A method based in part on Federal Emergency Management Agency P-695, is developed for evaluating the reliability of performance and/or loss assessments for both individual and portfolios of buildings. Consideration is given to how well the building investigation and corresponding evaluation process have been performed, the qualifications of the person(s) doing the assessment, the thoroughness of the building evaluation, the technical validity of the assessment procedure or model and what computational reliabilities are presented. The method characterizes the uncertainty of each component of the assessment procedure for each building by qualitative determined assignments. The resulting reliability measure is likely to be most useful for determining whether/or not a building has acceptable life safety performance, or if a portfolio has an acceptably low loss risk over a given period of time. In both cases, the reliability must either be sufficient to warrant action, or serve to indicate need for improved assessment.

The Zackenberg River delta is located in northeast Greenland (74°30′ N, 20°30′ E) at the outlet of the Zackenberg fjord valley. The fjord-valley fill consists of a series of terraced deltaic deposits (ca. 2 km2) formed during relative sea-level (RSL) fall. We investigated the deposits using sedimentological and cryostratigraphic techniques together with optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. We identify four facies associations in sections (4 to 22 m in height) exposed along the modern Zackenberg River and coast. Facies associations relate to (I) overriding glaciers, (II) retreating glaciers and quiescent glaciomarine conditions, (III) delta progradation in a fjord valley, and (IV) fluvial activity and niveo-aeolian processes. Pore, layered, and suspended cryofacies are identified in two 20 m deep ice-bonded sediment cores. The cryofacies distribution, together with low overall ground-ice content, indicates that permafrost is predominately epigenetic in these deposits. Fourteen OSL ages constrain the deposition of the cored deposits to between approximately 13 and 11 ka, immediately following deglaciation. The timing of permafrost aggradation was closely related to delta progradation and began following the subaerial exposure of the delta plain (ca. 11 ka). Our results reveal information concerning the interplay between deglaciation, RSL change, sedimentation, permafrost aggradation, and the timing of these events. These findings have implications for the timing and mode of permafrost aggradation in other fjord valleys in northeast Greenland.

Data on the potential generation of energy from wind, solar and biomass is crucial for analysing their development, as it sets the limits on how much additional capacity it is feasible to install. This paper presents the methodologies used for the development of ENSPRESO, ENergy System Potentials for Renewable Energy SOurces, an EU-28 wide, open dataset for energy models on renewable energy potentials, at national and regional levels for the 2010–2050 period. In ENSPRESO, coherent GIS-based land-restriction scenarios are developed. For wind, resource evaluation also considers setback distances, as well as high resolution geo-spatial wind speed data. For solar, potentials are derived from irradiation data and available area for solar applications. Both wind and solar have separately a potential electricity production which is equivalent to three times the EU's 2016 electricity demand, with wind onshore and solar requiring 16% and 1.4% of total land, respectively. For biomass, agriculture, forestry and waste sectors are considered. Their respective sustainable potentials are equivalent to a minimum 10%, 1.5% and 1% of the total EU primary energy use. ENSPRESO can enrich the results of any energy model (e.g. JRC-EU-TIMES) by improving its analyses of the competition and complementarity of energy technologies. Schwermineralanalysen an alluvialen Sedimenten und Paläoböden des Usumacinta-Flusses sind ein sehr effektives Werkzeug für die Rekonstruktion der relevanten Liefergebiete in den Tieflandgebieten der Mayas. Die mineralogischen Daten können für die pedostratigraphische Korrelation in der Region nützlich sein. Auf der Basis unserer Beobachtungen für Tierra Blanca ist die ultrastabile Schwermineralkomponente (zumeist Zirkon, Turmalin und Rutil) besonders erfolgversprechend für den Nachweis der Liefergebiete der Sedimente. Diese Minerale treten gemeinsam mit einer großen Vielfalt von sehr dichten authigenen Mineralen auf (u.a. Titanit). Unter Berücksichtigung der spezifischen Eigenschaften und der Alter von ausgewählten Horizonten, kann nun versucht werden, eine regionale Chronostratigraphie für Paläoböden und alluviale Sequenzen zu entwickeln. Unsere Daten deuten auf Sedimenttransport in Flussrinnen von den Hochländern Guatemalas gen Westen hin. Die untersuchten Schichten enthalten auch große Anteile an vulkanischen Mineralen mit frischen und eckigen Formen, was auf ein proximales Liefergebiet (wahrscheinlich Tacana Volcano, Mexico/Guatemala) hinweist.

Die über 12 m mächtige Löss-Paläoboden-Sequenz in Paudorf (Niederösterreich), ist seit Jahrzehnten bekannt als locus typicus für die „Paudorfer Bodenbildung“. Dieser 1 m mächtige Pedokomplex im obersten Profilabschnitt entwickelte sich eem- bis frühwürmzeitlich. Das differenzierte Lösssediment im Liegenden, mit einem über 2 m mächtigen Pedokomplex im basalen Bereich, stellt ein außergewöhnliches Archiv mittelpleistozäner Landschaftsentwicklung dar. Die paläopedologischen und sedimentologischen Untersuchungen sowie erste mikromorphologische Analysen widmen sich erstmals der Gesamtabfolge und den Prozessen, die zu ihrer Entstehung beitrugen. Farb- und Karbonatanalysen in hoher Auflösung sowie detaillierte Korngrößenanalysen dienen dabei als hilfreiche Datenbasis. Die Untersuchungen zeigen zum einen, dass die Lösssedimente einer komplexen Genese unter periglazialen Bedingungen unterlagen. Neben äolischer Akkumulation spielten (zumeist solifluidale) Umlagerungsprozesse unter Einmischung von lokalem Material ebenso wie in situ Prozesse eine Rolle. Morphodynamisch stabile Phasen sind insbesondere in den beiden Pedokomplexen nachweisbar. In Bereichen, in denen Datierungen vorliegen, können Entwicklungsphasen mit jenen anderer Sequenzen korreliert werden und als klimatische Signale interpretiert werden. Die „Paudorfer Bodenbildung“ ist vermutlich eine frühglaziale Humuszone (MIS 5c[–a?]), die sich in einer solifluidal umgelagerten (MIS 5d) eemzeitliche Braunerde (MIS 5e) gebildet hat. Im Lösssediment konnten Nassböden nachgewiesen werden, wie sie typisch für spätrisszeitliche (MIS 6) Sequenzen sind. Der untere Pedokomplex wurde offenbar über mehrere Warmphasen verschiedener Intensitäten hinweg gebildet und wiederholt von Umlagerungsprozessen und äolischer Sedimentation während Kaltphasen unterbrochen.

Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einen Überblick über neu datierte Abschnitte in bekannten Löss/Paläoboden-Sequenzen Niederösterreichs. Die Ergebnisse der Datierungen im Profil Joching deuten darauf hin, dass es im letzten Hochglazial zur Lösssedimentation kam. Die meisten erfassten Alter sind jedoch älter als das letzte Hochglazial, was auf Erosionsprozesse hindeutet, die zur Abtragung der jüngeren Lösse geführt hat. In dem Abschnitt zwischen ~28 ka and ~35 ka wurden überwiegend Tundragleye gebildet. Eine intensivere interstadiale Bodenbildung ist nicht nachzuweisen. Dieses Ergebnis kann auch für die stratigraphische Einstufung von ‚Stillfried B‘ (sensu Fink) von Bedeutung sein. Der folgende chronologische Abschnitt liegt zwischen ~35 ka and ~57 ka in Lösssedimenten mit eingeschalteten Tundragleyen. Auch dieser Abschnitt ist durch Umlagerungsprozesse charakterisiert. Im Zeitraum von ~57 ka bis ~106 ka befindet sich eine markante Zeitlücke, die vermutlich auf langandauernde und intensive Erosionsprozesse im Untersuchungsgebiet zurückzuführen ist. Die älteste Datierung in den Sedimenten des letzten Glazials mit 106 ± 12 ka befindet sich in Paudorf direkt über dem ‚Stillfried A‘- Komplex (Paudorfer Bodenbildung). Direkt unter diesem Pedokomplex, bzw. vergleichbaren Pedokomplexen treten in Lössablagerungen Alter von 124 ± 2 5 ka (Göttweig-Aigen), 159 ± 20 ka (Paudorf 1), and 170 ± 16 ka (Joching) auf. Darüber hinausgehende Alter konnten in Stratzing, Paudorf 2, Göttweig-Furth und Langenlois nachgewiesen werden.

Das Alter der meisten Lössablagerungen in Niederösterreich ist nicht bekannt. Das gilt insbesondere für mittelpleistozänen Löss, weil es keine allgemein anwendbare und akzeptierte Datierungsmethode für diesen Zeitraum gibt. Vor kurzem wurde gezeigt, dass infrarot-stimulierte Lumineszenz-(IRSL)-Signale, die bei erhöhten Temperaturen nach einer IR-Stimulation gemessen werden, wesentlich stabiler sind als standardmäßig bei 50°C gemessene IRSL-Signale. Diese Signale eröffnen die Möglichkeit, die datierbare Altersgrenze zu erweitern, indem der anomale Signalverlust (Fading) minimiert oder gar komplett umgangen wird. In dieser Arbeit wenden wir erstmalig zwei post-IR IRSL Single-Aliquot (SAR)-Datierungsprotokolle für polymineralische Feinkornextrakte von drei unterschiedlichen Löss-Paläoboden-Sequenzen aus Niederösterreich an. Die Lumineszenzcharakteristika und Alter der unterschiedlichen Protokolle werden mit denen von Messungen bei 50°C verglichen. Standardisierte Tests (recycling ratios, recuperation und dose recovery) zeigen, dass die Protokolle auf den untersuchten Löss anwendbar sind. Die Fading-Raten für die post-IR IRSL-Signale sind wesentlich geringer als für IRSL bei 50°C, während die Unterschiede in gemessenen Fading-Raten für post-IR IRSL bei 225°C und post-IR IRSL bei 290°C weniger offensichtlich sind. Signifikante Fading-Korrekturen für IRSL bei 50°C sind notwendig. Basierend auf unseren Daten schlussfolgern wir, dass die fading-korrigierten post-IR IRSL Alter bei 225°C und die nicht-korrigierten post-IR IRSL Alter bei 290°C die besten Altersabschätzungen für die untersuchten Sedimente liefern. Wir bevorzugen die letztgenannten Alter, weil keine Abhängigkeit zu Fading-Korrekturen besteht. Unsere Daten weisen darauf hin, dass die Paudorfer Bodenbildung sich während MIS 5 entwickelte, während die Göttweiger Verlehmungszone wesentlich älter ist (≥ 350 ka) als in den meisten vorangegangen Studien angenommen wurde.

Die Lössablagerungen im nördlichen Wienerwald sind im Vergleich mit anderen Mittelgebirgsregionen aufgrund ihrer Mächtigkeit sehr eindrucksvoll. Charakterista in der Korngrößenverteilung zeigen deutlich, dass die Lösse im Hagenbachtal sich von denen anderer Lösssgebiete unterscheiden. Ein Vergleich mit Lössprofilen in Krems und Stillfried hat ergeben, dass der Löss im Hagenbachtal einen erhöhten Sandanteil aufweist und damit den Einfluss der Flysch-Sandsteine widerspiegelt. Das spricht für einen lokalen Sedimenteintrag und kurze äolische Transportstrecken. Zudem wurde der Löss unter kühl-humiden Paläoklimabedingungen zum Teil als Schwemmlöss abgelagert. Die malakologischen Ergebnisse stimmen mit den geomorphodynamischen Bedingungen überein. Die Umlagerungsprozesse haben zu einer intensiven Fragmentierung der Schalenreste geführt. Die malakologischen Untersuchungen belegen insgesamt 28 unterschiedliche Arten von terrestrischen Gastropoden mit 3283 Individuen. Die paläoökologische Auswertung spricht für sehr humide, kühle Klimabedingungen mit einer schwach ausgeprägten, klimatisch etwas günstigeren Phase.

In this contribution we evaluated both the structurally-controlled failure susceptibility of the fractured Cretaceous chalk rocks and the topographically-controlled shallow landslide susceptibility of the overlying glacial sediments for the Jasmund cliff area on Rügen Island, Germany. We employed a combined methodology involving spatially distributed kinematical rock slope failure testing with tectonic fabric data, and both physically- and inventory-based shallow landslide susceptibility analysis. The rock slope failure susceptibility model identifies areas of recent cliff collapses, confirming its value in predicting the locations of future failures. The model reveals that toppling is the most important failure type in the Cretaceous chalk rocks of the area. The shallow landslide susceptibility analysis involves a physically-based slope stability evaluation which utilizes material strength and hydraulic conductivity data, and a bivariate landslide susceptibility analysis exploiting landslide inventory data and thematic information on ground conditioning factors. Both models show reasonable success rates when evaluated with the available inventory data, and an attempt was made to combine the individual models to prepare a map displaying both terrain instability and landslide susceptibility. This combination highlights unstable cliff portions lacking discrete landslide areas as well as cliff sections highly affected by past landslide events. Through a spatial integration of the rock slope failure susceptibility model with the combined shallow landslide assessment we produced a comprehensive landslide susceptibility map for the Jasmund cliff area.
