1. Measurement report: Occurrence of aminiums in PM2.5 during winter in China – aminium outbreak during polluted episodes and potential constraints

Abstract

Amines and aminiums play an important role in particle formation, liquid-phase reactions, and climate change and have attracted considerable attention over the years. Here, we investigated the concentrations and compositions of aminiums in PM2.5 in 11 Chinese cities during the winter, focusing on the characteristics of aminiums during the polluted days and the key factors influencing aminium outbreak. Monomethylaminium was the dominant aminium species in most cities, except Taiyuan and Guangzhou, followed by dimethylaminium. Diethylaminium dominated the total aminiums in Taiyuan and Guangzhou. Thus, the main amine sources in Taiyuan and Guangzhou were significantly different from those in other cities. The concentrations of the total aminiums (TAs) in most cities increased significantly during the polluted days, while relatively weak aminium outbreaks during the polluted days occurred in Xi'an and Beijing. Additionally, the concentrations of TAs in Xi'an and Beijing were insignificantly correlated with those of PM2.5 and the major acidic aerosol components, while the opposite pattern was observed in nine other cities. Thus, acid–base chemistry was significantly associated with the formation of aminiums in PM2.5 in all cities, except Xi'an and Beijing. Based on the sensitivity analysis of the aminiums : ammonium ratio to ammonium changes, as well as excluding the effects of relative humidity and atmospheric oxidation, we proposed the possibility of the competitive uptake of ammonia versus amines on acidic aerosols or the displacement of aminiums by ammonia in Xi'an and Beijing (constraining aminium outbreaks). Overall, this study deepens the understanding of the spatiotemporal differences in aminium characteristic and formation in China. However, the uptake of amines on particles to form aminiums and the relevant influencing factors require further mechanistic research.

Abstract

To investigate the optical characteristics and sources of brown carbon (BrC) in North China, where the atmospheric aerosol loadings are high and have severe impacts on Earth's climate system, we collected fine aerosols (PM2.5) at an urban site in Tianjin over a 1-year period. We measured the ultraviolet (UV) light absorption and excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence of the water-soluble BrC (WSBrC) and the water-insoluble but methanol-soluble BrC (WI-MSBrC) in the PM2.5 using a three-dimensional fluorescence spectrometer. The average light absorption efficiency of both WSBrC (Abs365, WSBrC) and WI-MSBrC (Abs365, WI-MSBrC) at 365 nm was found to be highest in winter (10.4 ± 6.76 and 10.0 ± 5.13 Mm−1, respectively) and distinct from season to season. The averages of the fluorescence index (FI) and the biological index (BIX) of WSBrC were lower in summer than in the other seasons and opposite to that of the humification index (HIX), which implied that the secondary formation and further chemical processing of aerosols were more intensive during the summer period than in the other seasons. However, in winter, the higher HIX together with the higher FI and BIX of WI-MSBrC suggested that the BrC loading was mainly influenced by primary emissions from biomass burning and coal combustion. Based on the EEM, the types of fluorophores in WSBrC were divided into humic-like substances (HULIS), including low-oxygenated and high-oxygenated species and protein-like compounds (PLOM), though mostly PLOM in the WI-MSBrC. The direct radiation absorption by both WSBrC and WI-MSBrC in the range of 300–400 nm accounted for ∼ 40 % of that (SFEAbs, 4.97 ± 2.71 and 7.58 ± 5.75 W g−1, respectively) in the range 300–700 nm.

Abstract

To better understand the origins and seasonality of atmospheric aerosols in North China, we collected fine aerosols (PM2.5) at an urban site (Nankai District, ND) and a suburban site (Haihe Education Park, HEP) in Tianjin from July 2018 to July 2019. The PM2.5 was studied for carbonaceous, nitrogenous and ionic components and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of total carbon (δ13CTC) and nitrogen (δ15NTN). On average, the mass concentrations of PM2.5, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and water-soluble OC (WSOC) were higher in winter than in summer at both ND and HEP. SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ were the dominant ions, and their sum accounted for 89 % of the total ionic mass at ND and 87 % at HEP. NO3- and NH4+ peaked in winter and were at their minimum in summer, whereas SO42- was higher in summer than in all the other seasons at HEP and was comparable among the seasons, although it peaked in winter at ND. δ13CTC and δ15NTN were −26.5 ‰ to −21.9 ‰ and +1.01 ‰ to +22.8 ‰ at ND and −25.5 ‰ to −22.8 ‰ and +4.91 ‰ to +18.6 ‰ at HEP. Based on seasonal variations in the measured parameters, we found that coal and biomass combustion emissions are the dominant sources of PM2.5 in autumn and winter, while terrestrial and/or marine biological emissions are important in spring and summer in the Tianjin region, North China. In addition, our results implied that the secondary formation pathways of secondary organic aerosols in autumn/winter were different from those in spring/summer; i.e., they might be driven by NO3 radicals in the former period.

Abstract

Little is known about the formation processes of nitrooxy organosulfates (OSs) by nighttime chemistry. Here we characterize nitrooxy OSs at a molecular level in firework-related aerosols in urban Beijing during Chinese New Year. High-molecular-weight nitrooxy OSs with relatively low H / C and O / C ratios and high unsaturation are potentially aromatic-like nitrooxy OSs. They considerably increased during New Year's Eve, affected by the firework emissions. We find that large quantities of carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules possibly formed by nighttime reactions. The sufficient abundance of aliphatic-like and aromatic-like nitrooxy OSs in firework-related aerosols demonstrates that anthropogenic volatile organic compounds are important precursors of urban secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). In addition, more than 98 % of those nitrooxy OSs are extremely low-volatility organic compounds that can easily partition into and consist in the particle phase and affect the volatility, hygroscopicity, and even toxicity of urban aerosols. Our study provides new insights into the formation of nitrooxy organosulfates from anthropogenic emissions through nighttime chemistry in the urban atmosphere.

5. Molecular and spatial distributions of dicarboxylic acids, oxocarboxylic acids, and α-dicarbonyls in marine aerosols from the South China Sea to the eastern Indian Ocean

Abstract

Marine aerosol samples collected from the South China Sea (SCS) to the eastern Indian Ocean (EIO) during a cruise from 10 March to 26 April 2015 were studied for diacids and related compounds. In view of air mass backward trajectories, source regions, and geographical features, the cruise area was categorized into the South China Sea (SCS), the eastern Indian Ocean off the coast of western Indonesia (EIO-WI), the EIO off the coast of Sri Lanka (EIO-SL), Malacca, and the Sri Lanka docking point (SLDP). Total concentrations of diacids, oxoacids, and α-dicarbonyls were high at the SLDP, followed by the SCS and Malacca, and they were the low in the EIO-WI. In this study, oxalic acid (C2) was the dominant diacid during the cruise, followed by malonic acid (C3) in the SCS, EIO-WI, EIO-SL, and Malacca, and succinic acid (C4) was relatively more abundant than C3 diacid at the SLDP. Except for SLDP, C3∕C4 mass ratios were always greater than 1, and no significant difference was observed during the cruise. The C2∕C4 and C2∕total diacid ratios also showed similar trends. The average mass ratios of adipic acid (C6) to azelaic acid (C9) were less than unity except for in the EIO-WI; the mass ratios of phthalic acid (Ph) to azelaic acid (C9) were less than 2 except for in the SCS. The concentrations of diacids were higher when the air masses originated from terrestrial regions than when they originated from remote oceanic regions. Based on the molecular distributions of organic acids, the mass ratios, and the linear correlations of selected compounds in each area, we found that the oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) released from the ocean surface and subsequent in situ photochemical oxidation was the main contributor to diacids, oxocarboxylic acids, and α-dicarbonyls from the SCS to the EIO. In addition, the continental outflow, which is enriched in anthropogenic VOCs and their aged products, influenced the organic aerosol loading, particularly over the SCS. Emissions from Sri Lanka terrestrial vegetation as well as fossil fuel combustion and subsequent photochemical oxidation also played a prominent role in controlling the organic aerosol loading and the molecular distribution of diacids and related compounds at the SLDP.

Abstract

Firework (FW) emission has strong impacts on air quality and public health. However, little is known about the molecular composition of FW-related airborne particulate matter (PM), especially the organic fraction. Here we describe the detailed molecular composition of Beijing PM collected before, during, and after a FW event in the evening of New Year's Eve in 2012. Subgroups of CHO, CHON, and CHOS were characterized using ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. These subgroups comprise a substantial fraction of aromatic-like compounds with low O∕C ratio and high degrees of unsaturation, some of which plausibly contributed to the formation of brown carbon in Beijing PM. Moreover, we found that the number concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, especially the organosulfates, increased dramatically during the FW event, whereas the number concentration of CHO and CHON doubled after the event, which was associated with multiple atmospheric aging processes including the multiphase redox chemistry driven by NOx, O3, and •OH. These findings highlight that FW emissions can lead to a sharp increase in high-molecular-weight compounds, particularly aromatic-like substances in urban particulate matter, which may affect the light absorption properties and adverse health effects of atmospheric aerosols.

7. Large contributions of biogenic and anthropogenic sources to fine organic aerosols in Tianjin, North China

Abstract

In order to better understand the molecular composition and sources of organic aerosols in Tianjin, a coastal megacity in North China, ambient fine aerosol (PM2.5) samples were collected on a day/night basis from November to December 2016 and from May to June 2017. The organic molecular composition of PM2.5 components, including aliphatic lipids (n-alkanes, fatty acids, and fatty alcohols), sugar compounds, and photooxidation products from isoprene, monoterpene, β-caryophyllene, naphthalene, and toluene, was analysed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and saccharides were identified as the most abundant organic compound classes among all of the tracers detected in this study during both seasons. High concentrations of most organics at night in winter may be attributed to intensive residential activities such as house heating as well as the low nocturnal boundary layer height. Based on tracer methods, the contributions of the sum of primary and secondary organic carbon (POC and SOC respectively) to aerosol organic carbon (OC) were 24.8 % (daytime) and 27.6 % (night-time) in winter and 38.9 % (daytime) and 32.5 % (night-time) in summer. In detail, POC derived from fungal spores, plant debris, and biomass burning accounted for 2.78 %–31.6 % (12.4 %; please note that values displayed in parentheses in the following are average values) of OC during the daytime and 4.72 %–45.9 % (16.3 %) at night in winter, and 1.28 %–9.89 % (5.24 %) during the daytime and 2.08 %–47.2 % (10.6 %) at night in summer. Biomass-burning-derived OC was the predominant source of POC in this study, especially at night (16.0±6.88 % in winter and 9.62±8.73 % in summer). Biogenic SOC from isoprene, α-∕β-pinene, and β-caryophyllene exhibited obvious seasonal and diurnal patterns, contributing 2.23±1.27 % (2.30±1.35 % during the daytime and 2.18±1.19 % at night) and 8.60±4.02 % (8.98±3.67 % and 8.21±4.39 %) to OC in winter and summer respectively. Isoprene and α-∕β-pinene SOC were obviously elevated in summer, especially during the daytime, mainly due to strong photooxidation. Anthropogenic SOC from toluene and naphthalene oxidation showed higher contributions to OC in summer (21.0±18.5 %) than in winter (9.58±3.68 %). In summer, toluene SOC was the dominant contributor to aerosol OC, and biomass burning OC also accounted for a high contribution to OC, especially at night-time; this indicates that land/sea breezes also play an important role in the aerosol chemistry of the coastal city of Tianjin in North China.

Abstract

Due to the way that remote sensing works, it has natural advantage to detect optical constituents in waters. And many kinds of inversion models were constructed based on the three main optical constituents, namely chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), suspended particulate matter (SPM), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Except Chl-a used as an indicator of eutrophication, however, the public generally cares less about other two parameters and is more familiar with Grade I ~ V scheme for utilization and protection purposes. Notice the three main optical constituents are also organic-related to some extent. It offers a possible way to estimate CODMn via remote sensing. According to field measurement conducted along the Guangzhou section of Pearl River (GPR for short), the spatial variation of CODMn in GPR shows some kinds of geographical feature, so does the correlation between CODMn and water color constituents. It indicated the complicated contribution of CODMn in GPR or some other urban rivers. Based on the band setting of GF-1 satellite, two kinds of inversion model of CODMn in GPR were finally constructed. One directly achieved CODMn from regression models of which predictors were different band combinations in different channels of GPR. To make the study more practical, the other one first provided empirical models of the three optical constituents, and then estimated CODMn of GPR based on its relationship with optical constituents. After all, Chl-a, SPM and CDOM could be distinguished optically, and remote sensing models of these three constituents in other studies may also be available.

10. GEOLOGICAL MAPPING OF LUNAR CRATER LALANDE: TOPOGRAPHIC CONFIGURATION, MORPHOLOGY AND CRATERING PROCESS

Abstract

Highland crater Lalande (4.45° S, 8.63° W; D = 23.4 km) is located on the PKT area of the lunar near side, southeast of Mare Insularum. It is a complex crater in Copernican era and has three distinguishing features: high silicic anomaly, highest Th abundance and special landforms on its floor. There are some low-relief bulges on the left of crater floor with regular circle or ellipse shapes. They are ~ 250 to 680 m wide and ~ 30 to 91 m high with maximum flank slopes > 20°. There are two possible scenarios for the formation of these low-relief bulges which are impact melt products or young silicic volcanic eruptions. According to the absolute model ages of ejecta, melt ponds and hummocky floor, the ratio of diameter and depth, similar bugle features within other Copernican-aged craters and lack of volcanic source vents, we hypothesized that these low-relief bulges were most consistent with an origin of impact melts during the crater formation instead of small and young volcanic activities occurring on the crater floor. Based on Kaguya TC ortho-mosaic and DTM data produced by TC imagery in stereo, geological units and some linear features on the floor and wall of Lalande have been mapped. Eight geological units are organized by crater floor units: hummocky floor, central peak and low-relief bulges; and crater wall units: terraced walls, channeled and veneered walls, interior walls, mass wasting areas, blocky areas, and melt ponds. These geological units and linear features at Lalande provided us a chance to understand some details of the cratering process and elevation differences on the floor. We evaluated several possibilities to understand the potential causes for the observed elevation differences on the Lalande's floor. We proposed that late-stage wall collapse and subsidence due to melt cooling could be the possible causes of observed elevation differences on the floor.

Abstract

Ocean acidification, a complex phenomenon that lowers seawater pH, is the net outcome of several contributions. They include the dissolution of increasing atmospheric CO2 that adds up with dissolved inorganic carbon (dissolved CO2, H2CO3, HCO3−, and CO32−) generated upon mineralization of primary producers (PP) and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The aquatic processes leading to inorganic carbon are substantially affected by increased DOM and nutrients via terrestrial runoff, acidic rainfall, increased PP and algal blooms, nitrification, denitrification, sulfate reduction, global warming (GW), and by atmospheric CO2 itself through enhanced photosynthesis. They are consecutively associated with enhanced ocean acidification, hypoxia in acidified deeper seawater, pathogens, algal toxins, oxidative stress by reactive oxygen species, and thermal stress caused by longer stratification periods as an effect of GW. We discuss the mechanistic insights into the aforementioned processes and pH changes, with particular focus on processes taking place with different timescales (including the diurnal one) in surface and subsurface seawater. This review also discusses these collective influences to assess their potential detrimental effects to marine organisms, and of ecosystem processes and services. Our review of the effects operating in synergy with ocean acidification will provide a broad insight into the potential impact of acidification itself on biological processes. The foreseen danger to marine organisms by acidification is in fact expected to be amplified by several concurrent and interacting phenomena.

14. The effect of Pd on martensitic transformation and magnetic properties for Ni50Mn38−xPdxSn12Heusler alloys

Abstract

In the past decade, Mn rich Ni-Mn based alloys have attained considerable attention due to their abundant physics and potential application as multifunctional materials. In this paper, polycrystalline Ni50Mn38−xPdxSn12 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6) Heusler alloys have been prepared, and the martensitic phase transformation (MPT) together with the shape memory effect and the magnetocaloric effect has been investigated. The experimental result indicates that the MPT evidently shifts to a lower temperature with increase of Pd substitution for Mn atoms, which can be attributed to the weakness of the hybridization between the Ni atom and excess Mn on the Sn site rather than the electron concentration. The physics properties study focused on the sample of Ni50Mn34Pd4Sn12 shows a good two-way shape memory behavior, and the maximum value of strain Δ L/L reaches about 0.13% during the MPT. The small of both entropy change Δ ST and magnetostrain can be ascribed to the inconspicuous influence of magnetic field induced MPT.

Abstract

A 15-point Thomson scattering diagnostic system is developed for ENN’s spherical torus experiment XuanLong-50 (EXL-50). A BeamTech laser with 3 J/pulse (1064 nm wavelength) at 50 Hz repetition rate is chosen for measurements during EXL-50 plasma operations. To enable measurements at low density (∼0.5 × 1018 m−3) plasma operations, the opto-mechanical subsystems are carefully designed to maximize the collection and transmission of the scattered light and to minimize the stray light level. In addition, the high bandwidth trans-impedance amplifiers and segmented high speed waveform digitizers allow for the application of muti-pulse averaging to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Details of the diagnostic system are described and initial experimental results are presented.

18. Boron isotope fractionation during brucite deposition from artificial seawater

Abstract

Experiments involving boron incorporation into brucite (Mg(OH)2) from magnesium-free artificial seawater with pH values ranging from 9.5 to 13.0 were carried out to better understand the incorporation behavior of boron into brucite and the influence of it on Mg/Ca-SST proxy and δ11B-pH proxy. The results show that both the concentration of boron in deposited brucite ([B]d) and its boron partition coefficient (Kd) between deposited brucite and final seawater are controlled by the pH of the solution. The incorporation capacity of boron into brucite is almost the same as that into corals, but much stronger than that into oxides and clay minerals. The isotopic compositions of boron in deposited brucite (δ11Bd) are higher than those in the associated artificial seawater (δ11Bisw) with fractionation factors ranging between 1.0177 and 1.0569, resulting from the preferential incorporation of B(OH)3 into brucite. Both boron adsorptions onto brucite and the precipitation reaction of H3BO3 with brucite exist during deposition of brucite from artificial seawater. The simultaneous occurrence of both processes determines the boron concentration and isotopic fractionation of brucite. The isotopic fractionation behaviors and mechanisms of boron incorporated into brucite are different from those into corals. The existence of brucite in corals can affect the δ11B and Mg/Ca in corals and influences the Mg/Ca-SST proxy and δ11B-pH proxy negatively. The relationship between δ11B and Mg/Ca in corals can be used to judge the existence of brucite in corals, which should provide a reliable method for better use of δ11B and Mg/Ca in corals to reconstruct paleo-marine environment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of long non-coding ribonucleic acid regulator of reprogramming (lncRNA ROR) on the proliferation and apoptosis of endometrial cancer (EC) cells, and to explore its possible underlying mechanism.The expression levels of lncRNA ROR and Notch1 in EC tissues were detected via quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The changes in Notch1 protein were detected via Western blotting. Subsequently, the regulatory mechanism of lncRNA ROR on Notch1 was analyzed using Luciferase reporter gene assay. Moreover, the changes in cell proliferation and apoptosis were determined through cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay, respectively.Both lncRNA ROR and Notch1 were highly expressed in EC tissues (p0.05). After overexpression of lncRNA ROR, HEC-1A cells had significantly enhanced proliferation (p0.05) and weakened apoptosis (p0.05). Meanwhile, the mRNA and protein levels of Notch1 rose remarkably compared with those in control group (p0.05). Luciferase reporter gene assay revealed that lncRNA ROR could bind to the Notch1 regulatory factor miR-34a and inhibit its activity.LncRNA ROR regulates the proliferation and apoptosis of EC cells via promoting the expression of Notch1 protein.

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to investigate the potential roles of miR-215-3p in the progression of cervical cancer.The levels of miR-215-3p in both cervical cancer tissues and cell lines were detected using quantitative Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assay. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT), colony formation, migration and invasion assays were applied to investigate the role of miR-215-3p on the growth and aggressiveness of cervical carcinoma SiHa cell. The expression of SRY-Box 9 (SOX9) was assessed by Western blotting assay. The Xenograft model and lung metastasis model were applied to reveal the impact of miR-215-3p on the growth and distant metastasis of cervical carcinoma cell in vivo. Moreover, miR-215-3p and a SOX9 siRNA were co-transfected into the SiHa cell to investigate the underlying mechanism of miR-215-3p-SOX9 on cervical cancer tumorigenesis.We used genome-wide gene expression analysis using clinical cervical cancer samples to identify that miR-215-3p was down-regulated in cervical cancer. We then collected 31 pairs of cervical cancer and the corresponding non-cancerous tissues to determine miR-215-3p level and indicated that miR-215-3p was significantly down-expressed in cervical cancer. Furthermore, the functional analysis suggested that over-expression of miR-215-3p suppressed the aggressiveness of SiHa cell, whereas down-regulation led to the opposite results. We identified SOX9 as a direct target of miR-215-3p, and its level was negatively related to the level of miR-215-3p in cervical carcinoma tissue. Up-regulation of SOX9 reversed the suppressive impact of miR-215-3p on cervical carcinoma cell, and down-regulation of SOX9 reversed the promote effects of miR-215-3p CONCLUSIONS: These findings showed the important role of the miR-215-3p/SOX9 axis in the progression of cervical carcinoma.

Abstract

The setting up of the ARGO detector at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China) has been completed during the last spring (2007). It consists of a central carpet made of 130 identical sub-units of 12 RPCs each (a "cluster"), covering a surface of about 5800 m2 with 93% active area, and a guard ring of 24 further clusters of the same type surrounding the central carpet with a lower sampling density. Signals are picked up by external electrodes of small size, thus allowing the sampling of EAS with high space-time granularity. Shower events are detected at a trigger rate of about 4 kHz. Events with a few particles detected by a single cluster are counted in scaler mode on a time base of 500 ms. The intrinsic modularity of the ARGO detector allowed us to collect data even during the setting-up period, using only the central carpet (or even part of it). Some preliminary results from the analysis of events collected in a few months of data taking are presented. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The hadronic interaction of cosmic rays with solar atmosphere can produce high energy gamma-rays. The gamma-ray luminosity is correlated both with the flux of primary cosmic rays and the intensity of the solar magnetic field. The gamma-rays below 200 GeV have been observed by Fermi without any evident energy cutoff. The bright gamma-ray flux above 100 GeV has been detected only during solar minimum. The only available data in the TeV range come from the HAWC observations, however, outside the solar minimum. The ARGO-YBJ data set has been used to search for sub-TeV/TeV gamma-rays from the Sun during the solar minimum from 2008 to 2010, the same time period covered by the Fermi data. A suitable model containing the Sun shadow, solar disk emission, and inverse-Compton emission has been developed, and the chi-square minimization method was used to quantitatively estimate the disk gamma-ray signal. The result shows that no significant gamma-ray signal is detected and upper limits to the gamma-ray flux at 0.3-7 TeV are set at the 95% confidence level. In the low energy range these limits are consistent with the extrapolation of the Fermi-LAT measurements taken during solar minimum and are compatible with a softening of the gamma-ray spectrum below 1 TeV. They also provide an experimental upper bound to any solar disk emission at TeV energies. Models of dark matter annihilation via long-lived mediators predicting gamma-ray fluxes >10-7 GeV cm-2 s-1 below 1 TeV are ruled out by the ARGO-YBJ limits.

Abstract

The ultra-clean Electrostatic-Fabric Integrated Precipitator (EFIP) is a new technology through updating the conventional EFIP with technical innovation. The dust concentration in the outlet of EFIP can realize ≤10mg/m3 and the pressure drop can be less than 800Pa by using this new technology. In order to illustrate the reliability of the application of ultra-clean EFIP on 1000MWe units, this study analyzed the dust concentrations in the outlet of precipitators, dust concentrations at stacks, fluctuations of dust concentration and pressure drop of four ultra-clean EFIPs on 1000MWe Power Plants in Pingdingshan, Henan, China and Shazhou, Zhejiang, China. The results showed that the outlet concentrations of the EFIPs were less than 10mg/Nm3 with small fluctuation, the outlet concentrations of the stacks were less than 5mg/Nm3 with small fluctuation, the pressure drop during running was less than 800Pa. The results proved the reliability of the ultra-clean EFIP for the 1000MWe units, and provided a new route for the 1000MWe units to achieve the ultra-low emission.

Abstract

To investigate the potential effect of miR-487b/IL-33-ST2 axis on the pathology of allergic rhinitis (AR) and the relevant mechanism.The expression level of interleukin-33 (IL-33), a homolog of sulfotransferase (ST2), and miR-487b were detected in patients with or without allergic rhinitis. Luciferase assay was performed to evaluate the interaction between miR-487b and IL-33, and the effects of miR-487b/IL-33-ST2 axis on allergic rhinitis mice were determined by established allergic rhinitis model in mice by ovalbumin (OVA). The levels of OVA-specific immunoglobulin E (Ig-E), proinflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13), and pathological alterations were detected.The level of IL-33 and its specific ligand ST2 were found increased in allergic rhinitis patients while miR-487b expression level was markedly repressed. To confirm whether miR-487b has a regulation effect on IL-33, we checked it in three publicly available algorithms, TargetScan, miRDB, and microRNA. We found that IL-33 is a direct target of miR-487b, and Luciferase assays confirmed our hypothesis, the subsequent experiments showed that up-regulation of miR-487b could inhibit expression of IL-33 and ST2, resulting in the decrease of the immunoglobulin E (Ig-E), proinflammatory cytokines and mitigation of pathological alterations.Our research discovered the suppressor function of miR-487b in allergic rhinitis and revealed that miR-487b/IL-33-ST2 axis may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of allergic rhinitis.

Abstract

The main scientific goals of the ARGO-YBJ ex- periment are -ray astronomy with a few hundreds GeV en- ergy threshold and cosmic ray physics below and around the knee of the primary energy spectrum (10 12 10 16 eV), where the transition from direct to indirect measurement techniques takes place. The ARGO-YBJ experiment, located at the Cos- mic Ray Observatory of Yangbajing (Tibet, P.R. of China, 4 300 m a.s.l.), is an unconventional Extensive Air Shower ar- ray of about 6,700 m 2 of active area, the only one exploiting the full-coverage technique at very high altitude currently in operation. The detector space-time granularity, performance and location offer a unique chance to make a detailed study of the structure of cosmic ray showers, in particular of the hadronic component. In this work we will focus on the main experimental results concerning cosmic ray and hadronic in- teraction physics: primary cosmic ray energy spectrum, an- tiproton over proton ratio, anisotropy in the cosmic ray flux and proton-air cross-section. Moreover, the possible data analysis improvements based on the use of all detailed infor- mation on the shower front (curvature, time width, rise time, ..), as well as the extension of the investigable energy range, allowed by the analog RPC readout, will be pointed out. nique at very high altitude presently in data taking. Location and detector features make ARGO-YBJ capable of investi- gating a wide range of fundamental issues in Cosmic Ray and Astroparticle Physics at relatively low energy threshold: - very high energy -ray astronomy, with an energy thresh- old of a few hundreds GeV; - search for emission of gamma ray bursts in the full GeV - TeV energy range; - study of cosmic rays (spectrum, composition, p/p ra- tio measurement, shower space-time structure, ...) starting at TeV energies; - Sun and heliosphere physics above Eth 1 GeV. In following sections, after a brief description of the detec- tor and its performance, the main results achieved on several items of cosmic ray physics will be presented and discussed.

Abstract

This paper reports on the observation of the sidereal large-scale anisotropy of cosmic rays using data collected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment over 5 years (2008-2012). This analysis extends previous work limited to the period from 2008 January to 2009 December, near the minimum of solar activity between cycles 23 and 24. With the new data sample, the period of solar cycle 24 from near minimum to maximum is investigated. A new method is used to improve the energy reconstruction, allowing us to cover a much wider energy range, from 4 to 520 TeV. Below 100 TeV, the anisotropy is dominated by two wide regions, the so-called “tail-in” and “loss-cone” features. At higher energies, a dramatic change of the morphology is confirmed. The yearly time dependence of the anisotropy is investigated. Finally, no noticeable variation of cosmic-ray anisotropy with solar activity is observed for a median energy of 7 TeV.

Abstract

Following the completion of the 5700m 2 RPC carpet-like AS array at YangBaJing this year, a further plan based on the ARGO Carpet is raised. It characterizes with its high altitude site, its full-coverage detector array and the multi-parameter measurements. Apart from studies on TeV and sub-TeV energy range, UHE Gamma-ray sources and the Knee Physics will become its characteristic subjects. In the first phase of the plan, the Yangbajing Super Complex Array (YSCA) will include a 10 4 m 2 RPC Carpet, five indoor μ -detectors (∼170 m 2 each), four big outdoor μ -detectors (∼432 m 2 each) and a traditional field scintillation detector array surrounding the Carpet. Monte-Carlo study shows that, with such an array in YBJ (4300m a.s.l.), γ -ray induced air showers can be separated from proton induced air showers clearly using only the observed electron and μ data event by event. To assist the classification of UHE air showers induced by different primary nuclei groups without severe interference by Composition/Model Entanglement, a second phase plan having a Central Burst Detector Array (CBDA) and some pulse shape detectors is schemed.

Abstract

ARGO-YBJ is a “full coverage” air shower detector consisting of Resistive Plate Chambers(RPCs) at the Yangbajing High Altitude Cosmic Ray Laboratory (Tibet, China) at 4300 m a.s.l. (lat=30.11° N, long=90.53° E). Using the data collected with a carpet of RPCs (1900 m 2 , about 1/3 of the whole ARGO-YBJ detector), the cosmic ray shadowing effect due to the Moon was studied. The 50% angular resolution is found to be ∼1.2° with the Chess-board method and the Moon shadow with a significance of 4.9 σ is found displaced by 0.7° westward and 0.5° northward with respect to the expected position by the equi-zenith angle Method.

Abstract

α-Galactosidase had applied in food and feed industries for hydrolyzing raffinose series oligosaccharides (RO) that are the factors primarily responsible for flatulence upon ingestion of soybean-derived products. The objective of the current work was to purify the α-galactosidase of Aspergillus foetidus ZU-G1 and compared the biochemical and hydrolytic properties of three major α-galactosidase forms (α-gal I, α-gal II and α-gal III). The molecular mass of the purified enzyme as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) was 106.3, 49.7 and 109.9 kDa, respectively. Its optimum reaction temperature was 60 °C and stable below 50 °C. The optimum pH of α-gal I and α-gal III was 5.0 and α-gal II was 4.0. Under 28 °C conditions for 24 h, α-gal I was stable at pH 4.0, α-gal II was stable at pH 6.0, and α-gal III was pH 5.0. α-Galactosidase was completely inhibited by Ag+. CuSO4·5H2O and SDS were powerful inhibitors of α-gal I and α-gal III but had little effect to α-gal II. EDTA did not strongly affect α-gal I and α-gal III, while strongly affect α-gal II. CaCl2·2H2O, MgSO4·7H2O and MnSO4·7H2O were activation for α-gal I, α-gal II and α-gal III. No significant inhibition of enzymes activity was observed in the presence of raffinose, lactose as well as other sugars tested. Synthetic substrate p-nitrophenyl-α-d-galactopyranoside was not preferentially hydrolyzed than natural substrates, such as melibiose, stachyose and raffinose. Under 40 and 50 °C incubation for 1–5 h, the stachyose of soybean milk was degraded by α-gal I, α-gal II and α-gal III and strongly hydrolyzed by α-gal II, and the raffinose of soybean milk was completely hydrolyzed by α-gal II and weakly hydrolyzed by α-gal I and α-gal III. The distinct hydrolytic and biochemical properties of α-gal I, α-gal II and α-gal III further signify the α-galactosidase of A. foetidus ZU-G1 was propitious to soybean milk and related food industry.

Abstract

We report on the search for Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the energy range 1-100 GeV in coincidence with the prompt emission detected by satellites using the Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing (ARGO-YBJ) air shower detector. Thanks to its mountain location (Yangbajing, Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l.), active surface (about 6700 m**2 of Resistive Plate Chambers), and large field of view (about 2 sr, limited only by the atmospheric absorption), the ARGO-YBJ air shower detector is particularly suitable for the detection of unpredictable and short duration events such as GRBs. The search is carried out using the "single particle technique", i.e. counting all the particles hitting the detector without measurement of the energy and arrival direction of the primary gamma rays. Between 2004 December 17 and 2009 April 7, 81 GRBs detected by satellites occurred within the field of view of ARGO-YBJ (zenith angle < 45 deg). It was possible to examine 62 of these for >1 GeV counterpart in the ARGO-YBJ data finding no statistically significant emission. With a lack of detected spectra in this energy range fluence upper limits are profitable, especially when the redshift is known and the correction for the extragalactic absorption can be considered. The obtained fluence upper limits reach values as low as 10**{-5} erg cm**{-2} in the 1-100 GeV energy region. Besides this individual search for a higher energy counterpart, a statistical study of the stack of all the GRBs both in time and in phase was made, looking for a common feature in the GRB high energy emission. Abstract

In this paper, we present a geometric exploitation of the d’Alembert–Lagrange equation (or alternatively, Lagrange form of the d’Alembert’s principle) on a Riemannian manifold. We develop the d’Alembert–Lagrange equation in a geometric form, as well as an explicit analytic form with respect to an arbitrary frame in a coordinate neighborhood on the configuration manifold. We provide a procedure to determine the governing dynamic equations of motion. Examples are given to illustrate the new formulation of dynamic equations and their relations to alternative ones. The objective is to provide a generalized perspective of governing equations of motion and its suitability for studying complex dynamic systems subject to nonholonomic constraints.

The major transfer paths of axle noise transmitted from chassis to vehicle body are identified and ranked based on power flows transmitted through bushings between the chassis and body. To calculate the power flows, it is necessary to know the reaction forces and the vibrations at the bushing locations on the body side. To this end, the body is represented in terms of experimentally derived frequency response functions (FRF's) at the bushing locations, and the FRF's are coupled with the FEA model of the chassis for performing a total system dynamic analysis. This paper also describes how the FRF's of the vehicle body and the frequency dependent stiffness data of the bushings can be combined together with a simple formulation to better represent the dynamic characteristics of a full vehicle. A classical example is used to illustrates the concept of the method, and the method is then applied to a vehicle axle noise analysis with detailed procedure. The theoretical predictions are compared with experimentally measured results. Good correlation has been obtained.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of thermal neutrons, generated by the hadronic component of extensive air showers (EAS), by means of a small array of EN-detectors developed for the PRISMA project (PRImary Spectrum Measurement Array), novel devices based on a compound alloy of ZnS(Ag) and $^{6}$LiF. This array has been operated within the ARGO-YBJ experiment at the high altitude Cosmic Ray Observatory in Yangbajing (Tibet, 4300 m a.s.l.). Due to the tight correlation between the air shower hadrons and thermal neutrons, this technique can be envisaged as a simple way to estimate the number of high energy hadrons in EAS. Coincident events generated by primary cosmic rays of energies greater than 100 TeV have been selected and analyzed. The EN-detectors have been used to record simultaneously thermal neutrons and the air shower electromagnetic component. The density distributions of both components and the total number of thermal neutrons have been measured. The correlation of these data with the measurements carried out by ARGO-YBJ confirms the excellent performance of the EN-detector., 35 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

This paper presents explicit expressions for new frequency response functions (FRFs) of a primary system when a vibration absorber is attached to it. The new FRF is expressed in terms of the baseline (‘old’) FRFs of the primary system and the physical parameters (the mass, stiffness, and damping) of the vibration absorber. The baseline FRF of the primary system can be obtained by either analytical or experimental methods. This approach allows engineers and designers to evaluate a number of alternative vibration absorbers before these absorbers are physically implemented on the structure. Therefore a considerable amount of time and effort for engineers and designers can be saved. Several examples are provided to illustrate the use of the method.

Abstract

This paper presents a new and simplified set of explicit equations of motion for constrained mechanical systems. The equations are applicable with both holonomic and nonholonomic systems and the constraints may, or may not, be ideal. It is shown that this set of equations is equivalent to governing equations developed earlier by others. The connection of these equations with Kane's equations is discussed. It is shown that the developed equations are directly applicable with controlled systems where the controlling forces and moments may be subject to constraints. Finally, a procedure is presented for determining which control force systems are equivalent. Examples are presented to demonstrate the advantages, features, and range of application of the equations.

Abstract

The absolute visual magnitudes of 457 Be stars are determined from Hipparcos parallaxes, subsequently the mean absolute visual magnitudes of Be stars for luminosity classes III, IV and V are obtained. The new Mv calibration is compared with existing calibrations. It is found that Be stars are generally brighter than B stars of the corresponding spectral types, and that there is no direct correlation between absolute magnitudes and the stellar rotational velocity, these results are in agreement with some earlier results. A new and interesting result is that there is no direct correlation between near infrared excess and absolute visual magnitudes for Be stars. Moreover, possible biases, such as the Malmquist bias and the Lutz-Kelker bias, are also discussed.
