OBJECTIVES: 'Overweight and obesity' is the second biggest preventable cause of cancer after smoking. In 2018, Cancer Research UK launched an awareness raising campaign about the link between overweight and obesity and cancer risk. This study aimed to evaluate the reach and impact of the campaign. STUDY DESIGN: This study was a repeated cross-sectional online survey. METHODS: The campaign consisted of six elements including the main message that 'Obesity is a cause of cancer'. UK adults and Members of Parliament (MPs) were surveyed before the campaign (W1; n = 2124 and n = 151), 1 month (W2; n = 2050 and n = 151) and 3 months after the campaign (W3; n = 2059 and MPs not surveyed). Outcome measures were campaign reach, awareness of overweight and obesity as risk factors for cancer, attitudes towards individuals who are overweight or obese, support for policies to reduce obesity and reactions to the campaign. RESULTS: Overall, 76.2% of MPs and just under half of the public (47.5% in W2 and 36.8% in W3) reported having seen the campaign. Unprompted awareness of obesity as a risk factor increased among the public from 17.1% at W1 to 43.3% in W2 (odds ratio 3.71, 95% confidence interval 3.18-4.33) and 30.3% in W3 (odds ratio 2.11, 95% confidence interval 1.80-2.47). A similar pattern was seen for prompted awareness and among MPs. There were no consistent changes in attitudes towards overweight individuals or support for policies to reduce obesity. CONCLUSIONS: This evaluation suggests that the campaign achieved the primary objective of increasing awareness of the link between obesity and cancer without increasing negative attitudes towards individuals who are overweight or obese.

Background Marmosets are a powerful, emerging model for human behavior and neurological disorders. However, longitudinal imaging modalities that visualize both cellular structure and function within the cortex are not available in this animal model. Hence, we implemented an approach to quantify vascular topology, hemodynamics, and neural activity in awake marmosets using two-photon microscopy (2PM). New method Marmosets were acclimated to a custom stereotaxic system. AAV1-GCaMP5G was injected into somatosensory cortex to optically indicate neural activity, and a cranial chamber was implanted. Results Longitudinal 2PM revealed vasculature and neurons 500 μm below the cortical surface. Vascular response and neural activity during sensory stimulation were preserved over 5 and 3 months, respectively, before optical quality deteriorated. Vascular remodeling including increased tortuosity and branching was quantified. However, capillary connectivity from arterioles to venules remained unchanged. Further, behavioral assessment before and after surgery demonstrated no impact on cognitive and motor function. Immunohistochemistry confirmed minimal astrocyte activation with no focal damage. Over 6 months, total cortical depth visualized decreased. When under anesthesia, the most prominent isoflurane-induced vasodilation occurred in capillaries and smaller arterioles. Comparison with existing method(s) These results demonstrate the capability to repeatedly observe cortical physiology in awake marmosets over months. Conclusions This work provides a novel and insightful technique to investigate critical mechanisms in neurological disorders in awake marmosets without introducing confounds from anesthesia.

This chapter describes the evolving role of clinical trial registries and results databases. The first part describes the important public health policy goals of registration and results reporting, its history, and key policies in the United States and abroad. The second part focuses on practical issues, policies, and procedures for submitting data to and using data from ClinicalTrials.gov , the largest publicly available clinical trials database in the world. The future role of systematic sharing of individual participant data also is discussed.

This work examined three different phenotypes of the yellow-eel stage of the European eel Anguilla anguilla, broad-heads, narrow-heads and eels with an intermediate head shape. The aim was to see whether broad-headed A. anguilla, which generally consume harder, larger prey, such as crustaceans and fish, exerted greater bite force than the narrow-headed variant, which mainly consume soft, small prey such as chironomid larvae. It was found that in 99 yellow A. anguilla, in vivo bite force of broad-heads are higher compared with narrow-heads and intermediates.

Conventional recording methods generally preclude following the activity of the same neurons in awake animals across days. This limits our ability to systematically investigate the principles of neuronal specialization, or to study phenomena that evolve over multiple days such as experience-dependent plasticity. To redress this shortcoming, we developed a drivable, chronically implanted microwire recording preparation that allowed us to follow visual responses in inferotemporal (IT) cortex in awake behaving monkeys across multiple days, and in many cases across months. The microwire bundle and other implanted components were MRI compatible and thus permitted in the same animals both functional imaging and long-term recording from multiple neurons in deep structures within a region the approximate size of one voxel (

We report the case of a 62-year-old patient who developed a carcinomatous meningitis while on second-line chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Cytologic analyses confirmed that carcinomatous cells of ovarian origin were present in cerebrospinal fluid. Carcinomatous meningitis is a very rare event in the natural history of ovarian carcinoma. We discuss the specificity of our case in the light of the literature. In addition, we present some relevant radiologic and pathologic documents illustrating this rare entity.

Experimental training model of rats with spinal cord injury (SCI).Osaka, JapanObjective:To investigate the effect of forced treadmill training by plantar placement (PP), as compared with dorsal placement (DP), of the dorsal paws on the locomotor behaviors of spinal cord-injured rats.The spinal cord was contusion-injured at the thoracic level. Rats were divided into three groups: forced training involving stepping by PP and DP and non-forced training/assistance (nT). Training began 1 week after injury and was conducted for 4 weeks. Locomotor behaviors were estimated using Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) scores, dorsiflexion of the hind paws and footprints of the hind paws. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations of the spinal cord lesions were conducted after 4 weeks of training.The values, respectively, of PP, DP and nT groups at 4 weeks of training were as follows: BBB scores were 15.6±0.8, 7.7±1.3 and 10.3±0.4. The paw dorsiflexion angles were 34.1±5.2, 16.4±2.4 and 23.6±3.0 degrees, respectively. The stride angles were 5.1±0.9, 13.7±4.9 and 17.8±4.0 degrees for the left paws. Cavity volumes were 10.3±2.1, 31.0±2.0 and 28.2±4.9%. In addition to cavities, there were astrocyte-devoid areas containing some loose tissues, through which many axons extended longitudinally.The BBB score, dorsiflexion angle and stride angle were consistently improved in the PP group. Cavity formation was more reduced, and many axons extended through coarse tissues formed in astrocyte-devoid areas at the lesion in the PP group. Forced training by PP of the hind paws promoted the behavioral and histological improvement of rats with SCI.

In order to expand the repertoire of somatosensory functions that can be effectively studied through functional MRI, we have developed a tactile stimulator which can deliver rich and varied combinations of stimulation that simulate natural tactile exploration. The system is computer controlled and compatible with an MRI environment. Complex aspects of somesthesis can thus be studied independent of confounds introduced by motor activity or problems with precision, accuracy or reproducibility of stimulus delivery.

Clinical trial registration allows interested parties to obtain information about ongoing and completed trials, but there are few data indicating the quality of the information provided during the registration process. We used information in the publicly available ClinicalTrials.gov database to describe patterns of trial registration before and after the implementation by journal editors of a new policy requiring registration as a prerequisite for publication.We reviewed ClinicalTrials.gov records to determine patterns of completion of the "Intervention Name" and "Primary Outcome Measure" data fields for trials registered on May 20 and October 11, 2005, and for trials registered during the interval between these two dates, inclusively.During the interval studied, the number of registrations in ClinicalTrials.gov increased by 73 percent from 13,153 to 22,714. The percentage of interventional trials registered by industry with nonspecific Intervention Name entries (attributable to four drug companies) decreased from 10 percent to 2 percent; all other industry and nonindustry records contained specific entries in this field. Of the 2670 studies registered by industry between the two dates, 76 percent provided information in the Primary Outcome Measure field, although these entries varied markedly in their degree of specificity. In the remaining 24 percent of the records, this field was blank.During the summer of 2005, there were large increases in the number of clinical trial registrations. Overall, the data contained in records were more complete in October than they were in May, but there still is room for substantial improvement.

We present the characteristic imaging findings of hypoplasia of the internal carotid artery (ICA) in two cases, one accompanied by an intracranial aneurysm. Finding of a diffuse luminal narrowing of the ICA on MR angiography or digital subtraction angiography (DSA) could wrongly evoke severe acquired diseases such as dissection or atherosclerosis. Absence of associated wall thickening and flow disturbances on color Doppler sonography (CDS) should suggest carotid hypoplasia. Confirmation of the diagnosis is obtained by CT of the skull showing a small carotid canal. Non-invasive procedures are sufficient to differentiate this rare congenital anomaly from acquired string signs.

This protocol documents the construction of a custom microscope stage system currently in widespread use by a wide variety of investigators. The current design and construction of this stage is the result of multiple iterations, integrating input from a number of electrophysiologists working with a variety of preparations. Thus, this tool is a generally applicable solution, suitable for a wide array of end-user requirements; its flexible design facilitates rapid and easy configuration, making it useful for multi-user microscopes, as individual researchers can reconfigure the stage system or have their own readily replaceable stage plates. Furthermore, the stage can be manufactured using equipment typically found in small research machine shops, and by keeping the various parts on hand, machinists can quickly satisfy new requests and/or modifications for a wide variety of applications.

We report one cervical and two thoracic vertebral haemangiomas with neurological disturbance successfully treated by percutaneous vertebroplasty followed by decompression surgery. Vertebroplasty consolidates the vertebral body and reduces the risk of haemorrhage. Subsequent surgery may be limited to decompressive laminectomy and resection of the epidural extension of the haemangioma. Embolisation was also carried out in one case. Complete neuroimaging workup, including CT, myelo-CT and MRI, is necessary prior to treatment.

The aim of percutaneous laser disk decompression (PLDD) is to vaporize a small portion of the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disk, thereby reducing the volume and pressure of a diseased disk. This minimally invasive technique can be performed in patients who need surgical intervention for disk herniation with leg pain. PLDD is usually performed under fluoroscopic guidance with or without diskoscopy. However, it can also be performed under dual computed tomographic (CT) and fluoroscopic guidance as an outpatient procedure. CT and fluoroscopic guidance increases the safety and accuracy of PLDD, with high precision of instrument guidance, direct visualization of nucleus pulposus vaporization, and reduced risk of complications. Of 119 patients with lumbar disk herniation treated with PLDD under CT and fluoroscopic guidance, 91 (76.5%) had a good or fair response. PLDD performed with CT and fluoroscopic guidance appears to be a safe and effective treatment for herniated intervertebral disks.

The localization of N -cadherin in the normal, and regenerating nerve fibers was investigated by immunocytochemistry in the chicken sciatic nerve. The normal unmyelinated fibees exhibited N -cadherin immunoreactivity on the plasma membranes of axons and Schwann cells where they were in contact with each other, while myelinated fibers displayed no immunoreactivity except at the mesaxon where Schwann cell plasma membranes were attached to each other. In the regenerating nerves, intense immunoreactivity was demonstrated on the surface of plasma membranes of axons and Schwann cells where axon-axon and axon-Schwann cell contacts were made. No immunoreactivity was observed on the plasma membranes where regenerating axons or Schwann cells were in touch with the basal lamina. In addition, it was revealed that some vesicles in the growth cones had distinct N -cadherin immunoreactivity at the inner limiting membrane surface. These findings indicate that N -cadherin may be involved in the axon-axon and axon-Schwann cell adhesion in the normal unmyelinated as well as regenerating nerve fibers, and also in the attachment of Schwann cell processes at the mesaxon of myelinated fibers. In addition, these findings suggest that N -cadherin might be, at least in part, supplied by fusion of growth cone vesicles with the surface plasma membranes in growing axons.

The distribution of protein kinase C (alpha, beta, gamma subtypes) was studied using immunocytochemical techniques in normal nerve fibers and in regenerating sprouts (growth cones) from the nodes of Ranvier following crush injuries to the rat peripheral nervous system. In normal nerves, for each protein kinase C subtype, immunoreactivity was present in both myelinated and unmyelinated axons. In myelinated axons, immunoreactivity for all three subtypes was patchy in the axoplasm and diffuse in the subaxolemmal peripheral zones. No immunoreactivity was found in the microtubule and neurofilament (cytoskeletal) domain. In contrast, in unmyelinated axons, immunoreactivity was distributed diffusely in the axoplasm. Schwann cells of myelinated fibers exhibited protein kinase C immunoreactivity, but those of unmyelinated fibers did not. In regenerating nerves, early sprouts and growth cones extending through the crushed site along Schwann cell basal laminae exhibited intense immunoreactivity for all three subtypes. Immunoreactivity was distributed diffusely throughout the axoplasm of the regenerating sprouts (growth cones), in which microtubules and neurofilaments were very rare. Thus, the subcellular localization of the protein kinase C immunoreactivity in growth cones of early regenerating nerves differed from that of normal parent axons. These findings suggest that protein kinase C (alpha, beta and gamma subtypes), whose subcellular distribution becomes more extensive in regenerating axons, may have important functional roles in axonal sprouting and in the regulation of growth cone activity in the peripheral nervous system.

Introduction: Surgically implanted chambers with removable grids are routinely used for studying patterns of neuronal activity in primate brains; however, accessing target tissues is significantly constrained by standard grid designs. Typically, grids are configured with a series of guide holes drilled vertically, parallel to the walls of the chamber, thus targeted sites are limited to those in line vertically with one of the guide holes. Methods: By using the three-dimensional modeling software, a novel grid was designed to reach the targeted sites far beyond the standard reach of the chamber. The grid was fabricated using conventional machining techniques and three-dimensional printing.Results: A pilot study involving microinjection of the Magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agent gadolinium into the discrete regions of interest (ROIs) in the temporal cortex of an awake, behaving monkey demonstrated the effectiveness of this new design of the guide grid. Using multiple different angles of approach, we were readily able to access 10 injection sites, which were up to 5 mm outside the traditional, orthogonal reach of the chamber.

BACKGROUND The ClinicalTrials.gov trial registry was expanded in 2008 to include a database for reporting summary results. We summarize the structure and contents of the results database, provide an update of relevant policies, and show how the data can be used to gain insight into the state of clinical research. METHODS We analyzed ClinicalTrials.gov data that were publicly available between September 2009 and September 2010. RESULTS As of September 27, 2010, ClinicalTrials.gov received approximately 330 new and 2000 revised registrations each week, along with 30 new and 80 revised results submissions. We characterized the 79,413 registry and 2178 results of trial records available as of September 2010. From a sample cohort of results records, 78 of 150 (52%) had associated publications within 2 years after posting. Of results records available publicly, 20% reported more than two primary outcome measures and 5% reported more than five. Of a sample of 100 registry record outcome measures, 61% lacked specificity in describing the metric used in the planned analysis. In a sample of 700 results records, the mean number of different analysis populations per study group was 2.5 (median, 1; range, 1 to 25). Of these trials, 24% reported results for 90% or less of their participants. CONCLUSIONS ClinicalTrials.gov provides access to study results not otherwise available to the public. Although the database allows examination of various aspects of ongoing and completed clinical trials, its ultimate usefulness depends on the research community to submit accurate, informative data.

This article describes the algorithms implemented in the Essie search engine that is currently serving several Web sites at the National Library of Medicine. Essie is a phrase-based search engine with term and concept query expansion and probabilistic relevancy ranking. Essie's design is motivated by an observation that query terms are often conceptually related to terms in a document, without actually occurring in the document text. Essie's performance was evaluated using data and standard evaluation methods from the 2003 and 2006 Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) Genomics track. Essie was the best-performing search engine in the 2003 TREC Genomics track and achieved results comparable to those of the highest-ranking systems on the 2006 TREC Genomics track task. Essie shows that a judicious combination of exploiting document structure, phrase searching, and concept based query expansion is a useful approach for information retrieval in the biomedical domain.

Objectives: Large databases of published medical research can support clinical decision making by providing physicians with the best available evidence. The time required to obtain optimal results from these databases using traditional systems often makes accessing the databases impractical for clinicians. This article explores whether a hybrid approach of augmenting traditional information retrieval with knowledge-based methods facilitates finding practical clinical advice in the research literature. Design: Three experimental systems were evaluated for their ability to find MEDLINE citations providing answers to clinical questions of different complexity. The systems (SemRep, Essie, and CQA-1.0), which rely on domain knowledge and semantic processing to varying extents, were evaluated separately and in combination. Fifteen therapy and prevention questions in three categories (general, intermediate, and specific questions) were searched. The first 10 citations retrieved by each system were randomized, anonymized, and evaluated on a three-point scale. The reasons for ratings were documented. Measurements: Metrics evaluating the overall performance of a system (mean average precision, binary preference) and metrics evaluating the number of relevant documents in the first several presented to a physician were used. Results: Scores (mean average precision 0.57, binary preference 0.71) for fusion of the retrieval results of the three systems are significantly (p 0.01) better than those for any individual system. All three systems present three to four relevant citations in the first five for any question type. Conclusion: The improvements in finding relevant MEDLINE citations due to knowledge-based processing show promise in assisting physicians to answer questions in clinical practice. We describe a case of Castleman's disease in a 8-year-old-boy who presented with a slowly growing mass in the upper neck. MRI showed a well-defined homogeneous mass with nonspecific signal features. Unusual features were a kidney-bean shape and the deep location in the suprahyoid region, the mass originating in the left retropharyngeal space.

Despite a growing number of available Web-based health information resources, consumers continue to face a variety of barriers as they attempt to access these resources. Developing a system that appropriately responds to user queries poses several challenges. Guided by an earlier study that analyzed a large number of queries submitted to ClinicalTrials.gov, we developed a variety of techniques to assist user information seeking. We tested the efficacy of these techniques by submitting the original user queries to our new search engine to determine if these techniques would result in better system performance. Overall, the number of query failures was reduced, but the largest improvement was found in the system's query suggestion capability. For a subset of query failures, the current system was able to cut the earlier failure rate almost in half, in most cases providing a suggestion rather than directly finding records. The techniques described here provide a new approach for responding to user queries. The techniques are tolerant of certain types of errors and provide feedback to assist users in reformulating their queries.

We describe the development and deployment of a web-based authoring capability, the first implementation of which is used for data entry and management in support of the ClinicalTrials.gov web site. The system facilitates efficient collection of summary protocol information from multiple geographically-dispersed organizations. We explain the motivation for developing this capability, and cite critical design goals. We then describe system design, implementation and operation, focusing on essential aspects of each. We conclude with a summary of the extent to which we met our stated objectives.

The original spiral tube support (STS) assembly is improved by changing the shape of the tubing, with 1-cm presses perpendicularly along the length. This modification interrupts the laminar flow of the mobile phase. The tubing in the four return grooves to the center of the rotor is flattened by a specially made pressing tool to increase the number of spiral layers and decrease the dead space volume, thus increasing the column efficiency. The performance of this spiral tube assembly was tested in separations of dipeptides and proteins with suitable polar two-phase solvent systems. The results revealed that the present system yields high partition efficiency with a satisfactory level of stationary phase retention in a short elution time. The present high-speed counter-current chromatographic (HSCCC) system will be efficiently applied to a broad spectrum of two-phase solvent systems including aqueous-aqueous polymer phase systems (TPAS) which are used for separation of biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids.

Evolutionary algorithms have been used to successfully evolve artificial neural network structures. Normally the evolutionary algorithm has several different mutation operators available to randomly change the number and location of neurons or connections. The scope of any mutation is typically limited by a user-selected parameter. Nature, however, controls the total number of neurons and synaptic connections in more predictable ways, which suggests the methods typically used by evolutionary algorithms may be inefficient. This paper describes a simple evolutionary algorithm that adaptively mutates the network structure where the adaptation emulates neuron and synaptic growth in the rhesus monkey. Our preliminary results indicate it is possible to evolve relatively sparse connected networks that exhibit quite reasonable performance.

Background The water permeability barrier of the stratum corneum seems to be regulated primarily by lamellar bodies situated between the corneocytes; the lamellar bodies originate largely from polar lipid precursors, mainly sphingomyelin (SM), provided by the cells of the stratum granulosum via exocytosis of their lamellar body content. Objectives The aim of our study was to evaluate the cellular distribution of SM during development of the epidermis. Methods In this study, we investigated the expression and localization of SM in both adult and fetal mouse skin by a cytochemical detection method, immunofluorescence microscopy and immunoelectron microscopy, using anti-SM antibody, a specific binding protein to SM (lysenin), and Nile red stain. In addition, we measured transepidermal water loss to estimate the barrier function of the fetal skin. Results We observed that SM was widely distributed from the basal layer to the granular layer in the adult mouse epidermis. An intense cytochemical reaction for SM was observed on embryonic day E14·5 of gestation just before the differentiation of the granular and squamous cells from the intermediate cells. The immunofluorescence indicating SM was detected in two regions, i.e. the most superficial zone of the granular layer and the upper spinous layer after the cell differentiation at the late gestational age. This distribution was not detected by conventional lipid staining, such as with Nile red stain. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that SM was mainly localized in the intercellular spaces of the adult mouse epidermis and in the intracellular vesicles without a complete lamellar structure in the cytoplasm of epidermal cells of E14·5 fetuses. It is well known that the formation of the structurally mature cornified cell envelope occurs at E15·5 of development. The skin of fetuses at E16·5 showed a definite barrier function. Conclusions These findings suggest that SM dynamics is related to the formation of the lipid envelope, cell differentiation, and epidermal barrier function during development.

We report paradoxical and ambiguous imaging findings in a patient with transient ischaemic attack (TIA). Perfusion-weighted (PW) MRI obtained 2 hours after symptoms onset showed a hypoperfused area in a region compatible with the focal deficit, while diffusion-weighted (DW) MRI was considered negative. Despite the complete resolution of the symptoms which had already begun at the end of the first MR examination, follow up DW MRI at 3 days showed partial conversion to hyperintensity of the initially hypoperfused area. This case illustrates that PW and DW MRI have to be used in combination and at different time points to correctly diagnose and manage ischaemic stroke because PW MRI is more sensitive than DW MRI for very early detection of ischaemia and delayed DW MRI provides the final signature of brain damage even in case of complete clinical recovering.

The epithelial cells of the choroid plexus are a continuation of the ventricular ependymal cells and are regarded as modified ependymal cells. The present study was carried out to determine the influence of choroid plexus ependymal cells (CPECs) on axonal growth in vitro. Choroid plexuses were dissected from the fourth ventricle of postnatal day-1-10 mice, mechanically dissociated, and plated in fibronectin-coated culture dishes. CPECs had spread into monolayers with few endothelial cells in 3-week cultures. Some macrophages were scattered on the monolayer of CPECs. Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were excised from mouse fetuses of 14-day gestation, dissociated with trypsin and cocultured on the CPEC monolayers. For comparison, dissociated DRG neurons were cocultured on astrocyte monolayers or cultured on laminin-coated plates. After 4.5 h culturing, the cultures were fixed and immunohistochemically double-stained for neurites and CPECs using antibodies against beta-tubulin III and S-100 beta, respectively. It was demonstrated that neurons extended many long neurites with elaborate branching on the surface of S-100-stained CPECs. In contrast, DRG neurons cultured on the astrocytes and on the laminin-coated plates had much shorter primary neurites with fewer branches than those cultured on the CPECs. The total length of neurites including primary neurites and their branches, of a single DRG neuron was 285 +/- 14, 395 +/- 15 and 565 +/- 12 microM on the laminin-coated plates, on astrocytes and on CPECs, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy revealed extension of neurites with well-developed growth cones on the ependymal cells. These results suggest that CPECs have a great capacity to promote neurite outgrowth from DRG neurons in vitro.

In a previous study it has been shown that adult rat hippocampus-derived neural stem cells can be successfully transplanted into neonatal retinas, where they differentiate into neurons and glia, but they cannot be transplanted into adult retinas. In the current study, the effect of mechanical injury to the adult retina on the survival and differentiation of the grafted hippocampal stem cells was determined.Mechanical injury was induced in the adult rat retina by a hooked needle. A cell suspension (containing 90,000 neural stem cells) was slowly injected into the vitreous space. The specimens were processed for immunohistochemical studies at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after the transplantation.In the best case, incorporation of grafted stem cells was seen in 50% of the injured retinas. Most of these cells located from the ganglion cell layer through the inner nuclear layer close to the injury site. Immunohistochemically, at 1 week, more than half of the grafted cells expressed nestin. At 4 weeks, some grafted cells showed immunoreactivity for microtubule-associated protein (MAP) 2ab, MAP5, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), suggesting progress in differentiation into cells of neuronal and astroglial lineages. However, they showed no immunoreactivity for HPC-1, calbindin, and rhodopsin, which suggests that they did not differentiate into mature retinal neurons. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed the formation of synapse-like structures between graft and host cells.By the manipulation of mechanical injury, the incorporation and subsequent differentiation of the grafted stem cells into neuronal and glial lineage, including the formation of synapse-like structures, can be achieved, even in the adult rat retina.

The authors have developed a Web-based system that provides summary information about clinical trials being conducted throughout the United States. The first version of the system, publicly available in February 2000, contains more than 4,000 records representing primarily trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The impetus for this system has come from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Modernization Act of 1997, which mandated a registry of both federally and privately funded clinical trials ''of experimental treatments for serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions.'' The system design and implementation have been guided by several principles. First, all stages of system development were guided by the needs of the primary intended audience, patients and other members of the public. Second, broad agreement on a common set of data elements was obtained. Third, the system was designed in a modular and extensible way, and search methods that take extensive advantage of the National Library of Medicine's Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) were developed. Finally, since this will be a long-term effort involving many individuals and organizations, the project is being implemented in several phases.

The system described here provides a simple method of delivering anesthetic vapor to the fruit-fly Drosophila melanogaster. This system delivers known concentrations of volatile anesthetic vapor obtained from liquid anesthetics in a continuous gas stream of pure humidified air. It controls for evaporation, and absorption of volatile agents, whilst allowing for extracellular electrophysiological recordings. Recordings were made from the fly's escape muscles, the jump tergotrochanter muscle (TTM) and the flight dorsal longitudinal muscle (DLM). The system minimizes the quantity of anesthetic used, making the use of more expensive and more conventional anesthetics cost effective and practicable. It also permits monitoring the fly's movements during anesthesia.

We report the CT and MR appearance of a nontraumatic hemorrhagic arachnoid cyst presenting with a third nerve paresis in a 37-year-old man. The cyst, located in the left suprasellar area, contained a fluid-blood level with stigmata of subacute hemorrhage on both CT and MR studies.
