Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we describe the XENON100 data analyses used to assess the target-intrinsic background sources radon ( ), thoron ( ) and krypton ( ). We detail the event selections of high-energy alpha particles and decay-specific delayed coincidences. We derive distributions of the individual radionuclides inside the detector and quantify their abundances during the main three science runs of the experiment over a period of $$\sim 4\,\hbox {years}$$ ∼4years , from January 2010 to January 2014. We compare our results to external measurements of radon emanation and krypton concentrations where we find good agreement. We report an observed reduction in concentrations of radon daughters that we attribute to the plating-out of charged ions on the negatively biased cathode.

Abstract

Abstract The XENON1T experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) is the first WIMP dark matter detector operating with a liquid xenon target mass above the ton-scale. Out of its 3.2 t liquid xenon inventory, 2.0 t constitute the active target of the dual-phase time projection chamber. The scintillation and ionization signals from particle interactions are detected with low-background photomultipliers. This article describes the XENON1T instrument and its subsystems as well as strategies to achieve an unprecedented low background level. First results on the detector response and the performance of the subsystems are also presented.

Abstract

Abstract The XENON1T dark matter experiment aims to detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) through low-energy interactions with xenon atoms. To detect such a rare event necessitates the use of radiopure materials to minimize the number of background events within the expected WIMP signal region. In this paper we report the results of an extensive material radioassay campaign for the XENON1T experiment. Using gamma-ray spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques, systematic measurements of trace radioactive impurities in over one hundred samples within a wide range of materials were performed. The measured activities allowed for stringent selection and placement of materials during the detector construction phase and provided the input for XENON1T detection sensitivity estimates through Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

Abstract We describe the purification of xenon from traces of the radioactive noble gas radon using a cryogenic distillation column. The distillation column was integrated into the gas purification loop of the XENON100 detector for online radon removal. This enabled us to significantly reduce the constant $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn background originating from radon emanation. After inserting an auxiliary $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn emanation source in the gas loop, we determined a radon reduction factor of $$R\,>\,27$$ R > 27 (95% C.L.) for the distillation column by monitoring the $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn activity concentration inside the XENON100 detector.

Abstract

The XENON1T experiment is the most recent stage of the XENON Dark Matter Search, aiming for the direct detection of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). To reach its projected sensitivity, the background has to be reduced by two orders of magnitude compared to its predecessor XENON100. This requires a water Cherenkov muon veto surrounding the XENON1T TPC, both to shield external backgrounds and to tag muon-induced energetic neutrons through detection of a passing muon or the secondary shower induced by a muon interacting in the surrounding rock. The muon veto is instrumented with $84$ $8"$ PMTs with high quantum efficiency (QE) in the Cherenkov regime and the walls of the watertank are clad with the highly reflective DF2000MA foil by 3M. Here, we present a study of the reflective properties of this foil, as well as the measurement of its wavelength shifting (WLS) properties. Further, we present the impact of reflectance and WLS on the detection efficiency of the muon veto, using a Monte Carlo simulation carried out with Geant4. The measurements yield a specular reflectance of $\approx100\%$ for wavelengths larger than $400\,$nm, while $\approx90\%$ of the incoming light below $370\,$nm is absorbed by the foil. Approximately $3-7.5\%$ of the light hitting the foil within the wavelength range $250\,$nm $\leq \lambda \leq 390\,$nm is used for the WLS process. The intensity of the emission spectrum of the WLS light is slightly dependent on the absorbed wavelength and shows the shape of a rotational-vibrational fluorescence spectrum, peaking at around $\lambda \approx 420\,$nm. Adjusting the reflectance values to the measured ones in the Monte Carlo simulation originally used for the muon veto design, the veto detection efficiency remains unchanged. Including the wavelength shifting in the Monte Carlo simulation leads to an increase of the efficiency of approximately $0.5\%$., Comment: 25 pages, 27 figures. Abstract

The XENON100 experiment, situated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, aims at the direct detection of dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), based on their interactions with xenon nuclei in an ultra low background dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the general methods developed for the analysis of the XENON100 data. Abstract

n our paper, we presented searches for solar axions and galactic axionlike particles (ALPs) in the data collected by the XENON100 experiment (with an exposure of 224.6 days). We recently found a bug in the code to calculate the exclusion limit for galactic ALPs. This resulted in an underestimation of the ALP expected rate, which in turn led to an overly conservative limit, compared to what it should really be. We corrected the code, and the result of the XENON100 90% C.L. exclusion limit on galactic ALPs (shown in Fig. 1) was reevaluated. The corrected limit is stronger than the one previously published by approximately a factor of 5 across all masses and sets the best published limit on the axion-electron coupling, $g_{Ae}$, in the (1–40) keV/$c^2$ mass range.

Abstract

International audience; We report on weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search results in the XENON100 detector using a nonrelativistic effective field theory approach. The data from science run II (34 kg×224.6 live days) were reanalyzed, with an increased recoil energy interval compared to previous analyses, ranging from (6.6–240) keVnr. The data are found to be compatible with the background-only hypothesis. We present 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling constants of WIMP-nucleon effective operators using a binned profile likelihood method. We also consider the case of inelastic WIMP scattering, where incident WIMPs may up-scatter to a higher mass state, and set exclusion limits on this model as well.

12. Diabète de type 2 et stratégies thérapeutiques : quelles pratiques aujourd’hui en France ? Résultats de l’enquête EVOLUTIV

Abstract

Resume L’enquete Evolution des objectifs et des pratiques en diabetologie : place et contribution des therapeutiques innovantes (EVOLUTIV) a ete conduite en ligne sur internet, aupres de 135 medecins generalistes (MG) et 135 medecins specialistes (82,8 % d’endocrinologues-diabetologues) habitues au suivi des patients diabetiques de type 2 (DT2). La methodologie utilisee, celle des vignettes cliniques, a permis de leur proposer cinq profils de patients DT2, comportant chacun deux redactions differentes du meme cas clinique, combinant des situations de pratique clinique (bitherapie orale, diabete recent ou ancien, controle glycemique insuffisant ou desequilibre du diabete, absence ou presence de complications microvasculaire ou cardiovasculaire). Chaque medecin devait determiner le traitement antidiabetique pour ces dix cas cliniques, alors que, pour chacun d’entre eux, variaient deux parametres de base : le taux d’HbA 1c et l’indice de masse corporelle (IMC). Pour chaque cas clinique, quatre questions leur etaient posees, portant sur l’objectif glycemique (HbA 1c ) vise, l’objectif de perte de poids vise, la strategie therapeutique preconisee, les principaux criteres de decision ayant amene au choix therapeutique. Au total, 2 570 cas cliniques complets ont ete recueillis et analyses. L’analyse des reponses a mis en evidence : – des objectifs glycemiques et de perte de poids globalement ambitieux, alors que les strategies therapeutiques choisies, particulierement par les MG, ne paraissaient pas toujours en adequation avec ces objectifs ; – une difference de comportement entre MG et specialistes en termes d’intensification therapeutique. Les MG privilegiaient le maintien des strategies orales et sous-utilisaient les strategies injectables (analogue du glucagon-like peptide-1 [GLP-1] et insuline), alors qu’elles etaient plus largement et plus precocement preconisees par les specialistes, en particulier en cas d’HbA 1c ≥ 8 % et/ou d’IMC ≥ 29 kg/m 2 . Le recours a la classe des inhibiteurs de la dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-4) en ajout a la metformine predominait, tant chez les MG que chez les specialistes, avec, pour consequence, un recours plus tardif aux analogues du GLP-1, particulierement chez les MG (hors IMC de 35 kg/m 2 ) ; – le critere de decision predominant etait l’HbA 1c . Cependant, aux stades precoces du diabete, les moyens therapeutiques preconises par les MG n’etaient generalement pas adaptes a l’atteinte d’un objectif strict. Aux stades plus complexes (diabete ancien desequilibre et/ou complique), le taux de recours aux specialistes augmentait fortement, principalement pour les taux d’HbA 1c les plus eleves (≥ 9 %) et d’autant plus que l’IMC augmentait (≥ 29 kg/m 2 ).

Abstract

A complete dedicated electronics, from front-end to back-end, was developed to instrument a MIMAC prototype. A front end ASIC able to monitor 64 strips of pixels and to provide their individual "Time Over Threshold" information has been designed. An associated acquisition electronics and a real time track reconstruction software have been developed to monitor a 512 channel prototype. This auto-triggered electronic uses embedded processing to reduce the data transfer to its useful part only, i.e. decoded coordinates of hit tracks and corresponding energy measurements. Abstract

Dans cette revue, les relations entre le poids, le controle glycemique et le risque cardiovasculaire sont analysees a partir des dernieres donnees de la litterature. Le registre suedois des patients diabetiques de type 2 montre qu’un gain ponderal d’une unite d’Indice de masse corporelle (IMC) augmente significativement le risque vasculaire de 13 %, une amplitude presque equivalente a la reduction obtenue avec une baisse du taux d’HbA1c de 1 %. Plusieurs etudes sur le risque cardiovasculaire du diabetique ont produit des donnees convergentes et soulignent l’interet de maintenir l’objectif de reduction ponderale comme un element central de la strategie therapeutique de ces patients. Les etudes d’intervention visant a demontrer l’effet de la perte de poids sur la prevention des evenements cardiovasculaires sont en cours. Cet objectif therapeutique est difficile a atteindre ou a maintenir et doit faire appel a des outils depassant le simple cadre de la dietetique pour aborder des aspects de sciences humaines en cours de transposition dans le monde medical. Quoi qu’il en soit, tout doit etre fait pour eviter autant que faire se peut une prise de poids par l’utilisation de traitement(s) ayant un effet neutre ou favorable sur l’exces ponderal, dans les limites de leur efficacite.

Abstract

We present new experimental constraints on the elastic, spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross section using recent data from the XENON100 experiment, operated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 224.6 live days x 34 kg of exposure acquired during 2011 and 2012 revealed no excess signal due to axial-vector WIMP interactions with 129-Xe and 131-Xe nuclei. This leads to the most stringent upper limits on WIMP-neutron cross sections for WIMP masses above 6 GeV, with a minimum cross section of 3.5 x 10^{-40} cm^2 at a WIMP mass of 45 GeV, at 90% confidence level., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; corrected caption of figure 3

Abstract

The XENON100 experiment, in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, was designed to search for evidence of dark matter interactions inside a volume of liquid xenon using a dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the Slow Control System (SCS) of the experiment with emphasis on the distributed architecture as well as on its modular and expandable nature. The system software was designed according to the rules of Object-Oriented Programming and coded in Java, thus promoting code reusability and maximum flexibility during commissioning of the experiment. The SCS has been continuously monitoring the XENON100 detector since mid 2008, remotely recording hundreds of parameters on a few dozen instruments in real time, and setting emergency alarms for the most important variables., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

TheXENON100 experiment, installed underground at the LaboratoriNazionali del Gran Sasso, aims to directly detect dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their elastic scattering off xenon nuclei. This paper presents a study on the nuclear recoil background of the experiment, taking into account neutron backgrounds from (alpha, n) reactions and spontaneous fission due to natural radioactivity in the detector and shield materials, as well as muon-induced neutrons. Based on MonteCarlo simulations and using measured radioactive contaminations of all detector components, we predict the nuclear recoil backgrounds for the WIMP search results published by theXENON100 experiment in 2011 and 2012, 0.11(-0.04)(+0.08) events and 0.17(-0.07)(+0.12) events, respectively, and conclude that they do not limit the sensitivity of the experiment., We gratefully acknowledge support from NSF, DOE, SNF, UZH, FCT, Region des Pays de la Loire, STCSM, NSFC, DFG, Stichting voor Fundamenteel Onderzoek der Materie (FOM), the Max Planck Society and the Weizmann Institute of Science. 18. Exposition au bisphénol A et à ses dérivés chlorés chez les patients traités par hémodiafiltration en ligne

Abstract

Introduction Les conditions de securite sanitaire encadrant la pratique de l’hemodiafiltration en ligne (HDF-Ol) sont bien definies mais n’integrent cependant pas encore les risques lies a la presence de perturbateurs endocriniens (PE) comme le bisphenol A (BPA). Pourtant nos recents travaux menes en hemodialyse (HD) ont demontre sa presence au niveau des dialyseurs et dans l’eau ultrapure servant a produire le dialysat. L’objectif de cette nouvelle etude est d’evaluer pour la 1re fois l’exposition au BPA mais egalement a ses 4 derives chlores (Clx-BPA) (100 fois plus œstrogeniques que le BPA) : mono-, di-, tri- et tetra-chloro-BPA, lors du traitement par HDF-Ol. Materiels et methodes Les echantillons ont ete preleves sur la boucle de traitement de l’eau ultrapure puis a differents temps de la production du dialysat et du liquide de substitution (LS). Nous avons egalement quantifie le BPA apporte par les dialyseurs utilises en HDF-Ol dans notre institution. Les dosages ont ete effectues a l’aide d’une technique LC-MS/MS. Resultats Le BPA et ses Clx-BPA ont ete detectes a l’entree de la boucle de traitement d’eau et a chaque etape de sa purification (en moyenne 3,2, 0,3, 12,0, 0,2, 0,9 ng/L respectivement pour le BPA, le mcBPA, dcBPA, tcBPA et le ttBPA). Le BPA a ete retrouve dans le dialysat (39 ng/L) et dans le LS (1033 ng/L) ou la concentration du BPA decroit au cours du temps pour atteindre 265 ng/L en fin de seance. Enfin, le BPA etait present dans tous les dialyseurs testes, a des concentrations pouvant atteindre 149,0 ng/dialyseur dans le compartiment mimant le sang et jusqu’a 174,0 ng/dialyseur dans le dialysat malgre un rincage prealable avec 2 L de NaCl 0,9 %. Discussion Nos resultats demontrent que du BPA est apporte par le materiel utilise en HDF-Ol (dialyseurs, ultrafiltre, cartouches de concentres) mais egalement par l’eau servant a produire le dialysat et le LS. Ces derniers sont egalement contamines par des Clx-BPA via l’eau ultrapure. Conclusion Notre etude est la 1re montrant le risque d’exposition au BPA et Clx-BPA en HDF-Ol. Une etude visant a evaluer l’impact de cette exposition chez le patient traite doit maintenant etre envisagee mais la maitrise de cette contamination pourrait d’ores et deja s’integrer aux pratiques (choix des dispositifs medicaux) et au procede de traitement de l’eau.

Abstract

The AMANDE facility produces monoenergetic neutron fields from 2 keV to 20 MeV for metrological purposes. To be considered as a reference facility, fluence and energy distributions of neutron fields have to be determined by primary measurement standards. For this purpose, a micro Time Projection Chamber is being developed to be dedicated to measure neutron fields with energy ranging from 2 keV up to 1 MeV. We present simulations showing that such a detector, which allows the measurement of the ionization energy and the 3D reconstruction of the recoil nucleus, provides the determination of neutron energy and fluence of such low energy neutron fields.

Abstract

The AMANDE facility produces mono-energetic neutron fields from 2 keV to 20 MeV with a metrological quality (Gressier et al. ). To be considered as a standard facility, fluence and energy distributions of neutron fields have to be mastered, i.e. measured by primary detector standards. For this purpose, a new gaseous Time Projection Chamber ( μ TPC ) is being developed within the MIMAC project devoted to directional Dark Matter search (Billard et al. ). The μ TPC is dedicated to measure neutron fields from 2 keV up to 1 MeV. The measurement strategy requires track reconstruction of recoiling nuclei down to a few keV, which can be achieved with low pressure gaseous detectors. Hence the energy must be measured precisely and the track of the recoiling nucleus must be 3D reconstructed. This is achieved with a low pressure micropattern gaseous detector (a pixelized bulk micromegas) equipped with a self triggered electronics able to perform the anode sampling at a 50 MHz frequency. Methods to measure fluence and neutron energy with the TPC have been described.

Abstract

Directional detection of non-baryonic Dark Matter is a promising search strategy for discriminating WIMP events from background. However, this strategy requires both a precise measurement of the energy down to a few keV and 3D reconstruction of tracks down to a few mm. To achieve this goal, the MIMAC project has been developed. It is based on a gaseous micro-TPC matrix, filled with CF4 and CHF3. The first results on low energy nuclear recoils (H, F) obtained with a low mono-energetic neutron field are presented. The discovery potential of this search strategy is discussed and illustrated by a realistic case accessible to MIMAC., 6 pages, Proc. of the fifth international symposium on large TPCs for low energy rare event detection, Paris, France, Dec. 2010. The aim of the MIMAC project is to detect non-baryonic Dark Matter with a directional TPC using a high precision Micromegas readout plane. We will describe in detail the recent developments done with bulk Micromegas detectors as well as the characterisation measurements performed in an Argon(95%)-Isobutane(5%) mixture. Abstract

Directional detection is a promising Dark Matter search strategy. Indeed, WIMP-induced recoils present a direction dependence toward the Cygnus constellation, while background-induced recoils exhibit an isotropic distribution in the galactic rest frame. Taking advantage on these characteristic features and even in the presence of a sizeable background, we show for the first time the possibility to constrain the WIMP properties, both from particle and galactic halo physics, leading to an identification of non-baryonic Dark Matter. Abstract

Directional detection of galactic Dark Matter requires 3D reconstruction of low energy nuclear recoils tracks. A dedicated acquisition electronics with auto triggering feature and a real time track reconstruction software have been developed within the framework of the MIMAC project of detector. This auto-triggered acquisition electronic uses embedded processing to reduce data transfer to its useful part only, i.e. decoded coordinates of hit tracks and corresponding energy measurements. Abstract

A front end ASIC (BiCMOS-SiGe 0.35 \mum) has been developed within the framework of the MIMAC detector project, which aims at directional detection of non-baryonic Dark Matter. This search strategy requires 3D reconstruction of low energy (a few keV) tracks with a gaseous \muTPC. The development of this front end ASIC is a key point of the project, allowing the 3D track reconstruction. Each ASIC monitors 16 strips of pixels with charge preamplifiers and their time over threshold is provided in real time by current discriminators via two serializing LVDS links working at 320 MHz. The charge is summed over the 16 strips and provided via a shaper. These specifications have been chosen in order to build an auto triggered electronics. An acquisition board and the related software were developed in order to validate this methodology on a prototype chamber. The prototype detector presents an anode where 2 x 96 strips of pixels are monitored., 12 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Abstract

We have developed a micro-tpc using a pixelized bulk micromegas coupled to dedicated acquisition electronics as a read-out allowing to reconstruct the three dimensional track of a few keV recoils. The prototype has been tested with the Amande facility at the IRSN-Cadarache providing monochromatic neutrons. Abstract

The measurement of the ionization produced by particles in a medium presents a great interest in several fields from metrology to particule physics and cosmology. The ionization quenching factor is defined as the fraction of energy released by ionisation by a recoil in a medium compared with its kinetic energy. At low energy, in the range of a few keV, the ionization falls rapidly and systematic measurement are needed. We have developped an experimental setup devoted to the measurement of low energy (keV) ionization quenching factor for the MIMAC project. Abstract

The XENON100 dark matter experiment uses liquid xenon in a time projection chamber (TPC) to measure xenon nuclear recoils resulting from the scattering of dark matter Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). In this paper, we report the observation of single-electron charge signals which are not related to WIMP interactions. These signals, which show the excellent sensitivity of the detector to small charge signals, are explained as being due to the photoionization of impurities in the liquid xenon and of the metal components inside the TPC. They are used as a unique calibration source to characterize the detector. We explain how we can infer crucial parameters for the XENON100 experiment: the secondary-scintillation gain, the extraction yield from the liquid to the gas phase and the electron drift velocity., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

XENON is a direct detection dark matter project, consisting of a time projection chamber (TPC) that uses xenon in double phase as a sensitive detection medium. XENON100, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, is one of the most sensitive experiments of its field. During the operation of XENON100, the design and construction of the next generation detector (of ton-scale mass) of the XENON project, XENON1T, is taking place. XENON1T is being installed at LNGS as well. It has the goal to reduce the background by two orders of magnitude compared to XENON100, aiming at a sensitivity of $2 \cdot 10^{-47} \mathrm{cm}^{\mathrm{2}}$ for a WIMP mass of 50 GeV/c$^{2}$. With this goal, an active system that is able to tag muons and their induced backgrounds is crucial. This active system will consist of a water Cherenkov detector realized with a water volume $\sim$10 m high and $\sim$10 m in diameter, equipped with photomultipliers of 8 inches diameter and a reflective foil. In this paper we present the design and optimization study for this muon veto water Cherenkov detector, which has been carried out with a series of Monte Carlo simulations, based on the GEANT4 toolkit. This study showed the possibility to reach very high detection efficiencies in tagging the passage of both the muon and the shower of secondary particles coming from the interaction of the muon in the rock: >99.5% for the former type of events (which represent $\sim$ 1/3 of all the cases) and >70% for the latter type of events (which represent $\sim$ 2/3 of all the cases). In view of the upgrade of XENON1T, that will aim to an improvement in sensitivity of one order of magnitude with a rather easy doubling of the xenon mass, the results of this study have been verified in the upgraded geometry, obtaining the same conclusions.

Abstract

The XENON1T experiment is currently in the commissioning phase at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. In this article we study the experiment's expected sensitivity to the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interaction cross section, based on Monte Carlo predictions of the electronic and nuclear recoil backgrounds. The total electronic recoil background in $1$ tonne fiducial volume and ($1$, $12$) keV electronic recoil equivalent energy region, before applying any selection to discriminate between electronic and nuclear recoils, is $(1.80 \pm 0.15) \cdot 10^{-4}$ ($\rm{kg} \cdot day \cdot keV)^{-1}$, mainly due to the decay of $^{222}\rm{Rn}$ daughters inside the xenon target. The nuclear recoil background in the corresponding nuclear recoil equivalent energy region ($4$, $50$) keV, is composed of $(0.6 \pm 0.1)$ ($\rm{t} \cdot y)^{-1}$ from radiogenic neutrons, $(1.8 \pm 0.3) \cdot 10^{-2}$ ($\rm{t} \cdot y)^{-1}$ from coherent scattering of neutrinos, and less than $0.01$ ($\rm{t} \cdot y)^{-1}$ from muon-induced neutrons. The sensitivity of XENON1T is calculated with the Profile Likelihood Ratio method, after converting the deposited energy of electronic and nuclear recoils into the scintillation and ionization signals seen in the detector. We take into account the systematic uncertainties on the photon and electron emission model, and on the estimation of the backgrounds, treated as nuisance parameters. The main contribution comes from the relative scintillation efficiency $\mathcal{L}_\mathrm{eff}$, which affects both the signal from WIMPs and the nuclear recoil backgrounds. Abstract

We report on a search for particle dark matter with the XENON100 experiment, operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) for 13 months during 2011 and 2012. XENON100 features an ultra-low electromagnetic background of (5.3 \pm 0.6) \times 10^-3 events (kg day keVee)^-1 in the energy region of interest. A blind analysis of 224.6 live days \times 34 kg exposure has yielded no evidence for dark matter interactions. The two candidate events observed in the pre-defined nuclear recoil energy range of 6.6-30.5 keVnr are consistent with the background expectation of (1.0 \pm 0.2) events. A Profile Likelihood analysis using a 6.6-43.3 keVnr energy range sets the most stringent limit on the spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section for WIMP masses above 8 GeV/c^2, with a minimum of 2 \times 10^-45 cm^2 at 55 GeV/c^2 and 90% confidence level., 6 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Laboratory experiments searching for galactic dark matter particles scattering off nuclei have so far not been able to establish a discovery. We use data from the XENON100 experiment to search for dark matter interacting with electrons. With no evidence for a signal above the low background of our experiment, we exclude a variety of representative dark matter models that would induce electronic recoils. For axial-vector couplings to electrons, we exclude cross-sections above 6x10^(-35) cm^2 for particle masses of m_chi = 2 GeV/c^2. Independent of the dark matter halo, we exclude leptophilic models as explanation for the long-standing DAMA/LIBRA signal, such as couplings to electrons through axial-vector interactions at a 4.4 sigma confidence level, mirror dark matter at 3.6 sigma, and luminous dark matter at 4.6 sigma., 4 pages, 4 figures, with supporting online material

Abstract

We have studied the effect of salinity on the development and mineral nutrition of Setaria verticillata, a summer wild graminaceae. Measurement of biomass deposition in different organs showed that Setaria is very sensitive to salinity. Even the lowest NaCl concentration of 50 mM caused a significant reduction of dry weight production for both roots and aerial parts. At concentrations higher than 50 mM, dry matter deposition was more diminished in roots than shoot, resulting in higher shoot/root ratios. The tissues of plants grown in the presence of NaCl contained high concentrations of Na and Cl, with an excess of the former ion as compared to the latter, especially in the shoots. The aptitude of the plants for K vs. Na discrimination was estimated from the K/(K+Na) ratio in tissues. The values of this ratio were similar in roots and shoots, suggesting that the former organs controlled the K/Na selectivity of the latter. The K/(K+Na) ratio diminished as the concentration of NaCl in the medium was augmented, but it remained systematically higher than in the medium. This indicates that, even at the highest NaCl concentrations, the plants conserved a significant control on their K/Na nutrition. However, there was a striking parallelism between the inhibition of the growth and the decrease of K/(K+Na) ratio in tissues in response to increasing NaCl concentrations in the medium. We hypothesize that sensitivity of Setaria to NaCl is strongly dependent on the inhibiting effect of NaCl on K nutrition.

Abstract

Directional detection of non-baryonic Dark Matter requires 3D reconstruction of low energy nuclear recoils tracks. A gaseous micro-TPC matrix, filled with either 3He, CF4 or C4H10 has been developed within the MIMAC project. A dedicated acquisition electronics and a real time track reconstruction software have been developed to monitor a 512 channel prototype. This autotriggered electronic uses embedded processing to reduce the data transfer to its useful part only, i.e. decoded coordinates of hit tracks and corresponding energy measurements. The MIMAC project is a multi-chamber detector for Dark Matter search, aiming at measuring both track and ionization with a matrix of micromegas micro-TPC filled with He3 and CF4. Abstract

The rates of accumulation of K+, NO3 − and reduced N (Nr) in shoots, relative to that of Ca2+, were compared to the ratios K+/Ca2+, NO3 −/Ca2+ and Nr/Ca2+ in the xylem sap of NO3 −-fed soybean plants in order to estimate the xylem transport of K+, NO3 − and Nr. Then, phloem transport of K+ and Nr could be calculated. The quantification of NO3 − flux in the xylem and NO3 − accumulation in shoots allowed us to estimate the contribution of roots and shoots in the reduction of NO3 −. Subtraction of the inorganic anion content from the main cation content estimated the accumulation of carboxylate anions (R−). The export of R to roots was obtained by subtracting R accumulation in shoots from the theoretical production associated to NO3 − reduction in these organs. The OH− net excretion in the medium was monitored. Alkalinization of the medium was stopped by interruption of phloem conduction to the roots, and was not restored by glucose addition to the medium. Excretion of 14C by roots after incorporation of 14CO2 in leaves was greater than that from urea-fed plants. These results suggest that the OH− equivalents excreted in the medium originated from R produced in shoots. The supply of K-malate to the shoots via the transpiration flow stimulated NO3 − uptake. This result indicates that the circulation of R− to the roots could be a mechanism by which NO3 − assimilation in shoots controls NO3 − uptake by roots.

Abstract

Fungal elicitors, obtained from the mycelium of two plant pathogens, depolarized the plasmalemma of plant roots by reducing the electrogenic component of the membrane potential. The effect was rapid, stable, reversible and unrelated to pathogen specificity. These results are in agreement with the hypothesis that elicitors act at the cell surface level.

Abstract

A comparison was made between NO 3 − starved and NO 3 − pretreated maize roots. The former excreted H + in Ca(NO 3 ) 2 . The latter, in which the NO 3 − uptake system was induced, exhibited a net OH − efflux in the same solution. The apparent stoichiometry of the OH − and NO 3 − transport was 2 NO 3 − /1 OH − . A steady hyperpolarization was related to the functioning of the induced NO 3 − uptake system. These results suggest that this system is an 2 NO 3 − /1 OH − antiport. The thermodynamic requirements of such a model are discussed.

Abstract

Membrane resistances, electrical potentials and intracellular K+ activity have been studied in protoplasts of Acer pseudoplatanus L. using microelectrodes. The plasmalemma appears to be damaged during protoplast processing, so that it is almost completely depolarized. The positive polarization of the protoplasts is a property of their tonoplast. The osmotic shock of general dilution of the medium brings about a slight positive polarization of the protoplasts, which probably is the consequence of a dilution of the ionic contents of the cell. A rapid dilution of extracellular potassium produces the same effect by a considerable efflux of K+, which changes the concentration gradient so that electropositivity is accentuated. In general, certain states of shock can cause such polarization. These results, particularly the development of internal potassium activity, help in understanding the initial cause of the positive polarization that is sometimes observed in protoplasts.

Abstract

Electrical compartmentation has been compared in free cells, plasmolyzed cells, protoplasts, and isolated vacuoles of Acer pseudoplatanus, L. In free cells the electrical potential is about −70 mV in the cytoplasm and −40 mV in the vacuole. The corresponding resistances are 21 MΩ and 45 MΩ. For plasmolyzed cells, the values are about −43 mV (35 MΩ) for the cytoplasm and about −28 mV (20 MΩ) for the vacuole. For the cytoplasmic and the vacuolar compartments of protoplasts, the values are respectively +4 mV (33 MΩ) and +11 mV (10 MΩ). It has been shown that the increase of external osmotic pressure is responsible for part of the observed depolarization of protoplasts. However, the main cause of this depolarization is the cell wall disorganization of Acer cells. Internal cytoplasmic resistance may be induced by plasmolysis, and could explain the fact that the resistance is higher when the electrode is in the cytoplasm than when it is in the vacuole.
