Abstract

The mission of WEST (tungsten-W Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) is to explore long pulse operation in a full tungsten (W) environment for preparing next-step fusion devices (ITER and DEMO) with a focus on testing the ITER actively cooled W divertor in tokamak conditions. Following the successful completion of phase 1 (2016-2021), phase 2 started in December 2022 with the lower divertor made entirely of actively cooled ITER-grade tungsten mono-blocks. A boronization prior the first plasma attempt allowed for a smooth startup with the new divertor. Despite the reduced operating window due to tungsten, rapid progress has been made in long pulse operation, resulting in discharges with a pulse length of 100 s and an injected energy of around 300 MJ per discharge. Plasma startup studies were carried out with equatorial boron nitride limiters to compare them with tungsten limiters, while Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating assisted startup was attempted. High fluence operation in attached regime, which was the main thrust of the first campaigns, already showed the progressive build up of deposits and appearance of dust, impacting the plasma operation as the plasma fluence increased. In total, the cumulated injected energy during the first campaigns reached 43 GJ and the cumulated plasma time exceeded 5 h. Demonstration of controlled X-Point Radiator regime is also reported, opening a promising route for investigating plasma exhaust and plasma-wall interaction issues in more detached regime. This paper summarises the lessons learned from the manufacturing and the first operation of the ITER-grade divertor, describing the progress achieved in optimising operation in a full W environment with a focus on long pulse operation and plasma wall interaction.

Abstract

The WEST project recently launched at Cadarache consists in transforming Tore Supra in an X-point divertor configuration while extending its long pulse capability, in order to test the ITER divertor technology. The implementation of a full tungsten actively cooled divertor with plasma facing unit representative of ITER divertor targets will allow addressing risks both in terms of industrial-scale manufacturing and operation of such components. Relevant plasma scenarios are foreseen for extensive testing under high heat load in the 10–20 MW/m2 range and ITER-like fluences (1000 s pulses). Plasma facing unit monitoring and development of protection strategies will be key elements of the WEST program. WEST is scheduled to enter into operation in 2016, and will provide a key facility to prepare and be prepared for ITER.

Abstract

A genetic algorithm (GA)-based method has been developed to analyze Charge-eXchange Recombination Spectroscopy (CXRS) data and provide in-between shot evaluation of the ion temperature profile during Tore Supra experiments. The GA method proposed here proves to be fast and fairly accurate, even when analyzing low signal-to-noise data. Simulations using theoretical signals suggest that the ion temperature and the plasma rotation velocity are expected to be determined with a precision better than 10% for a noise level up to 5% of the spectrum peak. The good agreement with the commonly used KS4FIT code when analyzing CXRS experimental data - typically within 30% for ion temperature measurements - confirms the efficiency of such an analysis tool.

Abstract

Theoretical investigations are performed in order to explain the plasma rotation increments induced by lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) in Tore Supra and the results are compared to the experimental observations. The intrinsic toroidal rotation is governed by several mechanisms in concert. The impact of the LHCD on each involved mechanism is analyzed. The neoclassical toroidal rotation is always in the counter-current direction. The toroidal diamagnetic velocity is of the order of the experimental toroidal velocity. At high plasma current the rotation evolution in the lower hybrid (LH) phase is controlled by the neoclassical friction force due to the trapped ions in banana trajectories through the toroidal diamagnetic velocity. This force results in the counter-current increment as observed in the experimental measurement of toroidal rotation. At low plasma current the rotation is dominated by momentum turbulent transport when the LH waves are applied. The Reynolds stress grows strongly compared to the high plasma current case and acts as a co-current force through its residual stress contribution. Momentum transport simulations are also performed with CRONOS (Artaud et al 2010) in order to assess the rotation increments induced by LHCD.

International audience; With WEST (Tungsten Environment in Steady State Tokamak) (Bucalossi et al 2014 Fusion Eng. Des. 89 [http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.fusengdes.2014.01.062] 907?12 ), the Tore Supra facility and team expertise (Dumont et al 2014 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 56 [http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/0741-3335/56/7/075020] 075020 ) is used to pave the way towards ITER divertor procurement and operation. It consists in implementing a divertor configuration and installing ITER-like actively cooled tungsten monoblocks in the Tore Supra tokamak, taking full benefit of its unique long-pulse capability. WEST is a user facility platform, open to all ITER partners. This paper describes the physics basis of WEST: the estimated heat flux on the divertor target, the planned heating schemes, the expected behaviour of the L?H threshold and of the pedestal and the potential W sources. A series of operating scenarios has been modelled, showing that ITER-relevant heat fluxes on the divertor can be achieved in WEST long pulse H-mode plasmas.

Abstract

Backscattering of a microwave beam close to the cut-off allows for measurement of density fluctuations at a specified wave-number, selected by the scattering geometry , where ki is the beam wave-number at the reflection layer. On the Doppler reflectometry system installed on Tore Supra, both the scattering wave-number k⊥ and the scattering localization (r/a) can be changed during the shot owing to the steppable probing frequency and the motorized antenna. Operating in O mode, the spatial and wave-number ranges depend essentially on density profile, typically probing 0.5 < r/a < 0.95 and 2 < k < 15 cm−1. Wave number spectra are similar to those obtained with conventional scattering systems. The perpendicular fluctuation velocity in the laboratory frame is obtained from the Doppler shift of the frequency spectrum Δω = k⊥v⊥. It is dominated by the plasma Er × B velocity. In the core, the latter is mainly due to the projection of the toroidal velocity, as this is shown by comparison with measurements by charge exchange recombination spectroscopy. In the set of analysed Tore Supra ohmic and ICRH plasmas, the observed rotation is consistent with a poloidal velocity in the electron diamagnetic direction and/or a toroidal velocity in the counter current direction. The detailed structure of the velocity profile, at the edge and in different plasma regimes, allows us then to get information on the radial electric field distribution. The dynamics of the fluctuation velocity can be studied from the time frequency analysis of the signal, for investigating intermittent behaviour and transient regimes.

Abstract

Steady state fully non-inductive current plasmas in Tore Supra offer an opportunity to study the turbulent particle pinch. The local parametric dependence of the particle pinch velocity allows us to discriminate between different theories. The existence of an anomalous pinch is unambiguously demonstrated. The results support the turbulent theories based on ion temperature gradient and trapped electron modes. An anomalous inward pinch related to the safety factor (q) profile is found to be dominant in the gradient region (normalized radius 0.3 ≤ r/a ≤ 0.6). In contrast, the direction of the anomalous pinch in the plasma core (r/a ≤ 0.3) is more sensitive to the electron temperature (Te) profile.

Abstract

In a recent series of experiments, electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) has been successfully used, at a level of 0.75 MW, for current profile tailoring during the current ramp-up in Tore-Supra. The electron cyclotron resonance heating power deposition was varied from on-axis to off-axis and the direction of the driven current from co to counter. In these conditions, the current profile is significantly modified with respect to those typically obtained in pure ohmic scenarios. Central reversed magnetic shear conditions have been achieved with on-axis counter-ECCD, accompanied by high electron temperature gradients, exhibiting internal transport barrier features. This improved electron transport is maintained for some time on the current flat-top when combining ECCD with ion cyclotron resonance heating in a (H)D minority scheme. Integrated interpretative analysis with the CRONOS code confirms that deeply reversed magnetic shear is indeed attained by on-axis counter-ECCD in low density conditions and in combination with a relatively fast controlled current ramp. The high electron temperature gradient is found to be located inside the negative magnetic shear region.

Abstract

The radial electric field gradient or the E×B flow shear has been pointed out as the underlying mechanism for turbulence suppression, responsible for an internal transport barrier formation in advanced tokamak scenarios. A comprehensive study on these subjects requires a direct measurement of the plasma radial electric field Er. The poloidal component of the magnetic field is assessed by the motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimeter, which is currently a standard diagnostic in fusion devices, allowing a local and nonperturbative measurement of the magnetic pitch angle. A precise measure to the state of polarization of the Stark components gives the information on the direction of the magnetic field. Two-dimensional measurements of density fluctuations are obtained in the radial and poloidal plane of the DIII-D tokamak with the Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic system. The goals are to visualize the spatial structure and time evolution of turbulent eddies, as well as to obtain the 2D statistical properties of turbulence. Recent measurements from the DIII-D tokamak indicate that shear in the group velocity of the edge density fluctuations is at least partly responsible for the factor 2 change in the H-mode power threshold that is observed when the direction of the ion ∇B drift relative to the X-point location is reversed. Spatially resolved edge density fluctuation measurements show a change in the poloidal group velocity of the fluctuations when the ∇B drift direction was changed, even though the edge profiles of density and temperature remained nearly the same. High (low) shear in the poloidal velocity is associated with a low (high) power threshold.

Abstract

The quiescent double barrier (QDB) regime is a high performance regime recently identified in DIII-D and characterized by a double transport barrier structure (core and edge) that can be maintained for several seconds, often limited only by the pulse length capabilities of the DIII-D hardware. The QDB regime has been sustained for up to 25 τE with fusion performance of up to βNH89≈7. The edge barrier is ELM-free, but modulated by low frequency MHD activity that allows density control via an external cryopump. The core barrier is similar to those seen in previous internal transport barrier experiments, but is maintained without complete stabilization of turbulence. Instead, the turbulence correlation lengths become very short so as to minimize the transport length scales. The two barriers are separated by a region of high transport that is a consequence of a zero-crossing in the E×B shearing rate. These discharges typically possess highly peaked density profiles. This has several implications: narrow bootstrap current profile, reduced beta limit and increased impurity retention. We will report on studies of each of these issues.

The relation between turbulent density fluctuations occurring at two wave numbers is investigated at the plasma edge of the Tore Supra tokamak [G. Antar et al., Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 41, 947 (1998)]. To achieve this goal, light scattering is used with two laser beams performing a Fourier transform about two given wave vectors. Consequently a band-pass filter is applied to the spatial turbulent density fluctuations about each wave vector. When the separation is small between the analyzing wave numbers, it is found that the cross correlation between the two channels is dominated by the autocorrelation caused by the diagnostic resolution in the wave number space. For large separations, the instrumental resolution contribution is negligible but a cross correlation amplitude of about 1% to 2% is still detected. Abstract

Substantial progress has been made towards both understanding and control of internal transport barriers (ITBs) on DIII-D, resulting in the discovery of a new sustained high performance operating mode termed the quiescent double barrier (QDB) regime. The QDB regime combines core transport barriers with a quiescent ELM-free H mode edge (termed QH mode), giving rise to separate (double) core and edge transport barriers. The core and edge barriers are mutually compatible and do not merge, resulting in broad core profiles with an edge pedestal. The QH mode edge is characterized by ELM-free behaviour with continuous multiharmonic MHD activity in the pedestal region and has provided density and radiated power control for longer than 3.5 s (25τE) with divertor pumping. QDB plasmas are long pulse high performance candidates, having maintained a βN H89 product of 7 for five energy confinement times (Ti ≤ 16 keV, βN ≤ 2.9, H89 ≤ 2.4 τE ≤ 150 ms, DD neutron rate Sn ≤ 4 × 1015 s-1). The QDB regime has only been obtained in counter-NBI discharges (injection antiparallel to the plasma current) with divertor pumping. Other results include successful expansion of the ITB radius using (separately) both impurity injection and counter-NBI, and the formation of ITBs in the electron thermal channel using both ECH and strong negative central shear (NCS) at high power. These results are interpreted within a theoretical framework in which turbulence suppression is the key to ITB formation and control, and a decrease in core turbulence is observed in all cases of ITB formation.

Abstract

PLATO is a prototype hybrid X-ray photon counting detector that has been designed to meet the specifications for plasma diagnostics for the WEST tokamak platform (Tungsten (W) Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) in southern France, with potential perspectives for ITER. The objective is to detect X-ray fluorescence photons emitted by a tokamak plasma at energies as low as 3 keV. Therefore, PLATO represents a customized solution that fulfills high sensitivity, low dispersion and high photon counting rate. The PLATO prototype matrix is composed of 16 x 16 pixels with a 70 μm pixel pitch. Each pixel contains a charge sensitive amplifier, two discriminators and two 12-bit counters/ shift registers. New techniques have been used in analog sensitive blocks to minimize noise coupling through supply rails and substrate, and to suppress threshold dispersion across the matrix. For an input capacitance of 250 fF and a maximum photon counting rate of 12 × 107 photons/s/mm2, simulation results indicate an input referred equivalent noise charge of 42 e-rms and a high response linearity for photon energies between 2 and 10 keV. A new feedback technique has been implemented that allows a very high conversion gain of 72 mV/ke- while maintaining low pixel to pixel dispersion. Moreover, the pixel has been optimized for low power consumption of 5.2 μW/pixel. The pixel can be programmed in a ‘two energy threshold’ mode with 2 x 12-bit counters, or ‘one energy threshold’ mode with a 24-bit counter. Furthermore, leakage current is compensated up to 10 nA/pixel. The Plato ASIC has been designed in TSMC CMOS 0.13 μm technology and is scheduled for a fabrication run in May 2016. Abstract

Plasma turbulence characteristics, including radial correlation lengths, decorrelation times, amplitude profile and flow velocity, have been measured during a ρ* scan on DIII-D while all other transport relevant dimensionless quantities (e.g., β, ν*, κ, q, Te/Ti) are held nearly constant. The turbulence is measured by examining the correlation properties of the local long wavelength (k⊥ρi ≤ 1) density fluctuations, measured with beam emission spectroscopy. The radial correlation length of the turbulence Lc,r is shown to scale with the local ion gyroradius, Lc,r ≈ 5ρi, while the decorrelation times scale with the local acoustic velocity as τc~a/cs. The turbulent diffusivity parameter, D~(Lc,r2/τc), scales in a roughly gyro-Bohm-like fashion, as predicted by the gyrokinetic equations governing turbulent transport. The experimental one fluid power balance heat diffusivity scaling and that from GLF23 modelling compare reasonably well.

Abstract

A new sustained high-performance regime, combining discrete edge and core transport barriers, has been discovered in the DIII-D tokamak. Edge localized modes (ELMs) are replaced by a steady oscillation that increases edge particle transport, thereby allowing particle control with no ELM-induced pulsed divertor heat load. The core barrier resembles those usually seen with a low (L) mode edge, without the degradation often associated with ELMs. The barriers are separated by a narrow region of high transport associated with a zero crossing in the E x B shearing rate.

Abstract

High-confinement (H-mode) operation is the choice for next-step tokamak devices based either on conventional or advanced tokamak physics. This choice, however, comes at a significant cost for both the conventional and advanced tokamaks because of the effects of edge localized modes (ELMs). ELMs can produce significant erosion in the divertor and can affect the beta limit and reduced core transport regions needed for advanced tokamak operation. Experimental results from DIII-D [J. L. Luxon et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. I, p. 159] this year have demonstrated a new operating regime, the quiescent H-mode regime, which solves these problems. Abstract

External impurity injection into L mode edge discharges in DIII-D has produced clear confinement improvement (a factor of 2 in energy confinement and neutron emission), reduction in all transport channels (particularly ion thermal diffusivity to the neoclassical level), and simultaneous reduction of long wavelength turbulence. Suppression of the long wavelength turbulence and transport reduction are attributed to synergistic effects of impurity induced enhancement of E × B shearing rate and reduction of toroidal drift wave turbulence growth rate. A prompt reduction of density fluctuations and local transport at the beginning of impurity injection appears to result from an increased gradient of toroidal rotation enhancing the E × B shearing. Transport simulations carried out using the National Transport Code Collaboration demonstration code with a gyro-Landau fluid model, GLF23, indicate that E × B shearing suppression is the dominant transport suppression mechanism.

A wavelet-transform-based spectral analysis is examined for application to beam emission spectroscopy (BES) data to extract poloidal rotation velocity fluctuations from the density turbulence data. Frequency transfer functions for a wavelet cross-phase extraction method are calculated. Numerical noise is reduced by shifting the data to give an average zero time delay, and the applicable frequency range is extended by numerical oversampling of the measured density fluctuations. This approach offers potential for direct measurements of turbulent transport and detection of zonal flows in tokamak plasma turbulence.

The benchmark design for a high spatial resolution, high sensitivity, long-wavelength density fluctuation diagnostic that observes collisionally induced Lyman-alpha emissions (λ0≈121.6 nm) from neutral beam atoms is presented. The sensitivity to plasma fluctuations at Lyα is estimated to be about 50 times higher than at Dα. This dramatically increases the photon-noise-limited signal-to-noise ratio. Design criteria include a spectral resolution of Δλ≈0.5 nm at Lyα, to isolate the Doppler-shifted beam emission from the bright edge Lα emission; high quantum efficiency detectors; high optical throughput; multichannel capability in the radial and poloidal directions; spatial resolution near 1 cm in the radial and poloidal directions to measure fluctuations in the wave number range 0.1⩽kr, kθ⩽3 cm−1. A system design based on a Czerny–Turner monochromator is considered.

Two-dimensional measurements of density fluctuations have been performed in DIII-D using the beam emission spectroscopy diagnostic. The 32 spatial channels are arranged to image a 5×6 cm2 (radial×poloidal) region in the plasma cross section, at a nominal 1 cm spatial resolution and separation. The typical decorrelation time, poloidal and radial correlation lengths, as well as a time-averaged flow field plot are obtained from spatial and temporal correlation analyses. A biorthogonal decomposition algorithm is applied to expand the data set into a set of modes that are orthogonal in time and in space, thus providing a simultaneous analysis of the space and time dependencies of fluctuation data.

Collective light scattering measurement is a powerful tool for investigating fluctuations and their relation with anomalous transport since it allows a direct, discriminating analysis of the turbulent scales. This high scale resolution has a counterpart in a poor spatial resolution, but some localization can be recovered allowing us to discriminate edge from core turbulence behavior and to determine turbulence profiles. More information about localization can be obtained using temporal dynamics of the scattered signal when the fluctuation velocity in the poloidal plane is sheared. Making use of the consequently separated Doppler shifts, different technics are used to extract localized information from frequency spectra and from the signal phase derivative. Capabilities of the diagnostic are illustrated by recent results obtained on Tore Supra in different regimes.

Abstract

Edge cooling experiments have been performed in Tore Supra by impurity injection and oblique pellet injection. Non-local transport (NLT) features have been confirmed in both cases in the ohmic regime. The pellet injection experiments have shown the existence of a threshold on the plasma density ne and current Ip for the observation of this effect: ne/Ip1/2?1.0?1016?(m-3?A-1/2). A second threshold on the relative density variation caused by the pellet injection has also been observed: ?ne/ne?0.5. It has been observed that in the L regime during lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) experiments these limits are extended: [ne/Ip1/2]crit = 1.4?1016?(m-3?A-1/2) and [?ne/ne]crit?0.65. Observations in a LHCD scheme with fully non-inductive plasma current seem to indicate that the mechanism governing the NLT is unlikely to be linked to the plasma current profile effects including the spatial redistribution, the magnetic shear, and the low-m MHD modes.

Abstract

In the tokamak Tore Supra, when a poloidally and toroidally localized limiter, called a modular limiter, is introduced into the lower part of the scrape-off layer, density fluctuations located in the vicinity of this limiter present a specific feature with the appearance of a new spectral pattern in the associated frequency spectrum. This leads to a strong up-down asymmetry observed in both the plasma edge and the plasma outer core, with a maximum level of turbulence at the bottom of the plasma. The observed asymmetry characteristics show that magnetic connection lengths play a critical role here and that the limiter configuration has some effect on the outer core turbulence.

Abstract

The parallel Kelvin–Helmholtz instability is investigated as a possible explanation for poloidal asymmetries of density fluctuations which reverse with the plasma current direction. It is shown that these modes are localized around the position where the radial gradient of parallel velocity is maximum. Two mechanisms lead to unstable Kelvin–Helmholtz modes; the acceleration of ions in a presheath and the anomalous Stringer spin-up due to asymmetries of the particle flux. Up–down asymmetries are explained by combining these two effects. Depending on the limiter configuration, the Stringer effect amplifies or weakens the flow due to presheath acceleration. This type of asymmetry reverses with the plasma current direction.

Abstract

In Tore Supra, density fluctuations near to the plasma edge present up-down asymmetries which increase with the edge safety factor, weakly depend on density and reverse with the plasma current direction. The strongest asymmetries are observed in the particular case where the plasma is leaning on the lower limiter close to the measurement chord, with a connection length along the magnetic field line to the lower measurement region of the order of 0.6 m. For strong asymmetries, top and bottom k-spectra have different slopes. Possible theoretical explanations for these asymmetries are briefly discussed.

Abstract

On Tore Supra, the frequency spectra of the turbulent fluctuations often have two peaks centred on some positive and negative values. These two peaks correspond to a poloidal motion of the electrons in opposite directions. In this paper, a criterion is elaborated which allows us to distinguish, in time, the density fluctuations convected in the parallel direction from those in the anti-parallel direction with respect to the analysing wavevector. Two signals are thus extracted out of one. The validity of our model is experimentally checked by comparing the auto-correlation coefficients and the frequency spectra computed for the whole and the separated signals. Consequently, the frequency spectrum is studied in detail as a function of the analysing wavenumber leading to an accurate determination of some plasma properties.

Abstract

It is believed that radial anomalous transport in tokamaks is caused by plasma turbulence. Using infra-red laser scattering techniques on the Tore Supra tokamak, statistical properties of the density fluctuations are studied as a function of the scales in ohmic as well as additional heating regimes using the lower hybrid or the ion cyclotron frequencies. The probability distributions are compared to a Gaussian in order to estimate the role of intermittency which is found to be negligible. The temporal behaviour of the three-dimensional spectrum is thoroughly discussed; its multifractal character is reflected in the singularity spectrum. The auto-correlation coefficient is shown to reflect a short-time coherence of the dissipative structures as well as their long-time incoherence and statistical independence. We also put forward the existence of fluctuations transfer between two distinct but close wavenumbers. A rather clearer image is thus obtained about the way energy is transferred through the turbulent scales.

Abstract

Application of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) in tokamak plasmas can induce both co- and counter-current directed changes in toroidal rotation, depending on the core magnetic shear, s. For discharges with s > 1, rotation increments in the countercurrent direction are observed. If the LH driven current is sufficient to suppress sawteeth and reduce the central s below unity, the core toroidal rotation change is in the co-current direction. This change in sign of the rotation increment is consistent with a change in sign of the residual stress (the divergence of which constitutes an intrinsic torque that drives the flow) through its dependance on s.

Abstract

The WEST project (W - for tungsten - Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) consists in transforming the French tokamak Tore Supra into an X-point divertor one and aims at testing the ITER technology of actively cooled high heat flux tungsten components during ITER-relevant long pulses. In addition to the integration in the vacuum vessel of a lower divertor and an upper one, this metamorphosis has a strong impact on diagnostics initially present in Tore Supra. Indeed the introduction of a divertor in the upper part of the machine leads to block the lines of sight of diagnostics previously installed in the upper ports. Therefore new diagnostics playing a paramount role for the safe tokamak operation need to be implemented, such as an infrared thermography diagnostic for the protection of plasma-facing components (PFCs) and heating antennas, and a visible spectroscopy system for the protection of tungsten PFCs. Besides several existing diagnostics need to be modified to adapt their lines of sight to the new divertor targets and plasma shape. This paper presents the main issues linked to the integration of diagnostics deriving from the WEST upgrade project. First the changes involved by the upgrade on the set of diagnostics currently implemented in Tore Supra are described. Then a particular focus is put on the integration of the two new optical systems, namely the infrared system and the visible spectroscopy one. These two systems being located within the vacuum vessel, a special care must be paid to their design, to allow them to withstand their harsh environmental conditions. Other new or updated fundamental diagnostics are also briefly presented. Finally the resulting new implementation of diagnostics envisaged to reach the scientific and technological goals of the WEST project is described.

Abstract

Changes in the core toroidal rotation profiles following injection of lower hybrid (LH) waves have been documented in Alcator C-Mod plasmas. Shot by shot scans of LH input power have been performed at fixed magnetic field and electron density for several plasma currents. For sawtoothing target plasmas, if the input power is low enough that the central safety factor q 0 remains below 1, the change in the core rotation is in the counter-current direction, consistent in sign, magnitude and LH power scaling with direct momentum input from the LH waves. If the power level is high enough that there are significant changes to the q profile, including the termination of sawtooth oscillations, the change in the toroidal rotation is in the co-current direction, consistent with changes in the momentum flux through its dependence on the current density profile. The direction of the rotation changes depends on whether q 0 is below or above unity, and seemingly not on the magnetic shear, nor the Ohmic confinement regime of the target plasma.

Abstract

International audience; Tore Supra routinely addresses the physics and technology of very long-duration plasma discharges, thus bringing precious information on critical issues of long pulse operation of ITER. A new ITER relevant lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) launcher has allowed coupling to the plasma a power level of 2.7 MW for 78 s, corresponding to a power density close to the design value foreseen for an ITER LHCD system. In accordance with the expectations, long distance (10 cm) power coupling has been obtained. Successive stationary states of the plasma current pro le have been controlled in real-time featuring (i) control of sawteeth with varying plasma parameters, (ii) obtaining and sustaining a `hot core' plasma regime, (iii) recovery from a voluntarily triggered deleterious magnetohydrodynamic regime. The scrape-off layer (SOL) parameters and power deposition have been documented during L-mode ramp-up phase, a crucial point for ITER before the X-point formation. Disruption mitigation studies have been conducted with massive gas injection, evidencing the difference between He and Ar and the possible role of the q = 2 surface in limiting the gas penetration. ICRF assisted wall conditioning in the presence of magnetic eld has been investigated, culminating in the demonstration that this conditioning scheme allows one to recover normal operation after disruptions. The effect of the magnetic eld ripple on the intrinsic plasma rotation has been studied, showing the competition between turbulent transport processes and ripple toroidal friction. During dedicated dimensionless experiments, the effect of varying the collisionality on turbulence wavenumber spectra has been documented, giving new insight into the turbulence mechanism. Turbulence measurements have also allowed quantitatively comparing experimental results with predictions by 5D gyrokinetic codes: numerical results simultaneously match the magnitude of effective heat diffusivity, rms values of density uctuations and wavenumber spectra. A clear correlation between electron temperature gradient and impurity transport in the very core of the plasma has been observed, strongly suggesting the existence of a threshold above which transport is dominated by turbulent electron modes. Dynamics of edge turbulent uctuations has been studied by correlating data from fast imaging cameras and Langmuir probes, yielding a coherent picture of transport processes involved in the SOL.

Abstract

The problem of light reflection has been raised as a high priority issue for optical diagnostics in next step fusion devices where metallic wall environment will generate significant perturbations in the diagnostics measurements. Tore Supra is a large size tokamak equipped with water-cooled stainless-steel panels used to sustain the plasma long shot radiations. These panels are highly reflective and affect significantly optical systems. In particular, we show that the infrared imaging diagnostic, which surveys the plasma facing component surface temperature for safety purposes, can give incorrect information due to reflected light coming from the bottom limiter. In the visible range, motional Stark effect and Zeff measurements experience important drifts during the plasma heating phases due to parasitic light coming from the limiter, but also from the plasma itself when the viewing lines are facing the reflecting walls. In the next step fusion devices such as ITER, the possibility to use optical measurements needs to be accessed by a modeling of the diagnostic light in its machine environment and the development of new techniques of online correction.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents an overview of recent advances in modeling and measurements of turbulence in Tore Supra plasmas. Spatio‐temporal properties of turbulence are discussed in relation with transport models. An explanation is proposed for the k−3 decay of wave number spectra, which are observed by using both coherent laser scattering and Doppler reflectometry. Also the interplay between turbulence and flows has been investigated. It is shown that toroidal rotation results from a competition between neoclassical and turbulence flow generation. Finally a new method has been proposed to determine the transport coefficients of impurities. These coefficients are usually well above the neoclassical prediction.

Abstract

The main results of the Tore Supra experimental programme in the years 2007–2008 are reported. They document significant progress achieved in the domain of steady-state tokamak research, as well as in more general issues relevant for ITER and for fusion physics research. Three areas are covered: ITER relevant technology developments and tests in a real machine environment, tokamak operational issues for high power and long pulses, and fusion plasma physics. Results presented in this paper include test and validation of a new, load-resilient concept of ion cycotron resonance heating antenna and of an inspection robot operated under ultra-high vacuum and high temperature conditions; an extensive experimental campaign (5 h of plasma) aiming at deuterium inventory and carbon migration studies; real-time control of sawteeth by electron cyclotron current drive in the presence of fast ion tails; ECRH-assisted plasma start-up studies; dimensionless scalings of transport and turbulence; transport experiments using active perturbation methods; resistive and fast-particle driven MHD studies. The potential role of Tore Supra in the worldwide fusion programme before the start of ITER operation is also discussed.

Abstract

Steady state full noninductive current tore supra plasmas offer a unique opportunity to study the local parametric dependence of particle pinch velocity, in order to discriminate among different theories. Magnetic field shear is found to generate an inward pinch which is dominant in the gradient region (normalized radius $0.3\ensuremath{\le}r/a\ensuremath{\le}0.6$). In contrast, the direction of the pinch in the plasma core ($r/a\ensuremath{\le}0.3$) is correlated with the electron temperature gradient length. The results are in agreement with both the turbulent theoretical and computational predictions.

Abstract

The recent development of real-time measurements and control tools in JET has enhanced the reliability and reproducibility of the relevant ITER scenarios. Diagnostics such as charge exchange, interfero-polarimetry, electron cyclotron emission have been upgraded for real-time measurements. In addition, real-time processes like magnetic equilibrium and q profile reconstruction have been developed and applied successfully in real-time q profile control experiments using model based control techniques. Plasma operation and control against magnetohydrodynamic instabilities are also benefiting from these new systems. The experience gained at JET in the field of real-time measurement and control experiments operation constitutes a very useful basis for the future operation of ITER scenarios.

Abstract

Injection of Lower Hybrid Heating and Current Drive (LHCD) into the current ramp-up phase of JET [Joint European Torus] discharges can produce extremely reversed q-profiles characterized by a core region of near zero current density (within Motional Stark Effect diagnostic measurement errors). Non-inductive, off-axis co-current drive induces a back electromotive force inside the non-inductive current radius that drives a negative current in the plasma core. The core current density does not go negative, although current diffusion calculations indicate that there is sufficient LHCD to cause this. The clamping of the core current density near zero is consistent with n=0 reconnection events redistributing the core current soon after it goes negative. This is seen in reduced MHD simulations and in nonlinear resistive MHD simulations which predict that these discharges undergo n=0 reconnection events that clamp the core current near zero.

Abstract

Experiments to study inward heat transport phenomena have been performed in the Tore Supra tokamak with off-axis electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). Both power balance and perturbation transport analysis have been done for low-frequency (1 Hz) ECRH modulation experiments. Heat diffusivity and heat pinch have been separately determined by fitting the experimental data of the amplitude and phase of the Fourier transform of the modulated temperature with a linear transport model including convection term. Comparison with the critical gradient model has shown that the heat pinch previously obtained could include a pseudo-pinch due to the non-linearity of the diffusivity and an additional non-diffusive heat pinch. The pinch effect is reduced for higher densities.

Abstract

Two-dimensional measurements of density fluctuations in the DIII-D tokamak, obtained with the Beam Emission Spectroscopy diagnostic, have allowed for construction of images and movies of plasma turbulence which are greatly aiding an understanding of tokamak turbulence phenomena. The measurements are obtained in the radial and poloidal plane at a spatial resolution of near 1 cm (about five ion gyroradii). Assembly of synchronized discrete measurements provides a low spatial resolution, high sensitivity, high throughput, high time resolution (/spl Delta/t=1 /spl mu/s) imaging system. These measurements have shed light on such processes as flow shear, turbulent eddy interaction and shearing, and provide direct visualization of long wavelength turbulence in a hot plasma.

Abstract

In the regions of the Tore Supra tokamak with significant ripple it is expected that a radial electric field (E r ) ensures the ambipolarity of fluxes of thermal particles trapped in ripple wells. A neoclassical calculation (Connor and Hastie 1973 Nucl. Fusion 13 221, Stringer 1972 Nucl. Fusion 12 689) shows that E r is related to ion temperature and density gradients. The validity of this relation is investigated in a series of Tore Supra L-mode discharges without external momentum input. Doppler reflectometry measurements of fluctuations perpendicular velocity, which is dominated by the E r × B drift, are found to be in good agreement with the predicted neoclassical E r .

Abstract

The divertor magnetic geometry has a significant effect on the poloidal velocity and resulting velocity shear of turbulent density fluctuations in the outer region of L-mode tokamak plasmas, as determined via two-dimensional measurements of density fluctuations with beam emission spectroscopy on DIII-D [J. L. Luxon, Nucl. Fusion 42, 614 (2002)]. Plasmas with similar parameters, except that in one case the ion ∇B drift points towards the divertor X point (lower-single-null, LSN), and in the other case, the ion ∇B drift points away from the divertor X point (upper-single-null, USN), are compared. Inside r∕a=0.9, the turbulence characteristics (density fluctuation amplitude, flow direction, correlation lengths) are similar in both cases, while near r∕a=0.92, a dramatic reversal of the poloidal velocity of turbulent eddies relative to the core flow direction is observed in plasmas with the ion ∇B drift pointing towards the divertor X point. Abstract

Équipe 107 : Physique des plasmas chauds; International audience; In parallel to the direct contribution to the procurement phase of ITER and Broader Approach, CEA has initiated research & development programmes, accompanied by experiments together with a significant modelling effort, aimed at ensuring robust operation, plasma performance, as well as mitigating the risks of the procurement phase. This overview reports the latest progress in both fusion science and technology including many areas, namely the mitigation of superconducting magnet quenches, disruption-generated runaway electrons, edge-localized modes (ELMs), the development of imaging surveillance, and heating and current drive systems for steady-state operation. The WEST (W Environment for Steady-state Tokamaks) project, turning Tore Supra into an actively cooled W-divertor platform open to the ITER partners and industries, is presented.

Abstract

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract

Parametric scalings of the intrinsic (spontaneous, with no external momentum input) toroidal rotation observed on a large number of tokamaks have been combined with an eye towards revealing the underlying mechanism(s) and extrapolation to future devices. The intrinsic rotation velocity has been found to increase with plasma stored energy or pressure in JET, Alcator C-Mod, Tore Supra, DIII-D, JT-60U and TCV, and to decrease with increasing plasma current in some of these cases. Use of dimensionless parameters has led to a roughly unified scaling with M-A alpha beta(N), although a variety of Mach numbers works fairly well; scalings of the intrinsic rotation velocity with normalized gyro-radius or collisionality show no correlation. Whether this suggests the predominant role of MHD phenomena such as ballooning transport over turbulent processes in driving the rotation remains an open question. For an ITER discharge with beta(N) = 2.6, an intrinsic rotation Alfven Mach number of M-A similar or equal to 0.02 may be expected from the above deduced scaling, possibly high enough to stabilize resistive wall modes without external momentum input.

Abstract

Observations of lower hybrid (LH) radio frequency heating effects on toroidal plasma rotation in L-mode Tore Supra plasmas are reported. A database of more than 50 plasma discharges has been analysed. Core rotation is found to increment in co- or counter-current direction depending on the plasma current (Ip). At low plasma current, the induced rotation is up to +15 km s−1 in the co-current direction, the rotation profile being affected over the whole plasma minor radius. At higher plasma current, an opposite trend is observed, the core plasma rotation incrementing up to −15 km s−1 in the counter-current direction, the profile being affected up to r/a < 0.6 only. At the zero crossing point, which is defined when the plasma rotation profile is not affected by LH power injection, Ip ~ 0.95 MA. In both low and high Ip cases, rotation increments are found to increase with the injected power. Several mechanisms in competition which can induce co- or counter-current rotation in Tore Supra LHCD plasmas are investigated and typical order of magnitude are discussed. How those effects evolve with plasma parameters and how they compete are important issues addressed in this paper. Rotation increment increase with Ip at fixed LH power is consistent with a dominant standard momentum confinement mechanism related to Ip increase. The co-current change in rotation is consistent with a fast electron ripple loss mechanism, while thermal ripple induced neoclassical friction and absorbed LH wave momentum from resonant electrons are expected to influence the rotation in the counter-current direction. Finally, the numerical simulations show that the radial turbulent momentum transport does impact the rotation behaviour inducing increment in co- or counter-current directions, depending on the plasma current amplitude.

Abstract

In Tore Supra plasmas, the perpendicular velocity measured by Doppler reflectometry was observed to reverse in a localized zone close to a normalized radius  ∼0.5–0.6, changing from a negative value (corresponding to a negative radial electric field Er) to a positive value (). This occurs in L-mode, ohmic plasmas with a negligible external momentum input, a non-circular limited cross-section, and an edge safety factor close to 3. This reversal is favoured by a decrease in the magnetic field, or an increase in density. It is accompanied by a characteristic behaviour of the MHD activity signal, whose amplitude decrease during a ramp-down of the edge safety factor as it approaches –3.2. Abstract

Changes in the core toroidal rotation profiles following injection of lower hybrid (LH) waves have been documented in Alcator C-Mod plasmas. Shot by shot scans of LH input power have been performed at fixed magnetic field and electron density for several plasma currents. For sawtoothing target plasmas, if the input power is low enough that the central safety factor q0 remains below 1, the change in the core rotation is in the counter-current direction, consistent in sign, magnitude and LH power scaling with direct momentum input from the LH waves. If the power level is high enough that there are significant changes to the q profile, including the termination of sawtooth oscillations, the change in the toroidal rotation is in the co-current direction, consistent with changes in the momentum flux through its dependence on the current density profile. The direction of the rotation changes depends on whether q0 is below or above unity, and seemingly not on the magnetic shear, nor the Ohmic confinement regime of the target plasma.
