The determination of the penetration resistance (RP) of a typical Hapludalf was accomplished in 1997, in Pelotas (RS), Brazil (31o49'S and 52o30'W). The study consisted of eight treatments with different cover crops, under rotation and succession under no-tillage. The samplings were accomplished up to the depth of 0.60 m and soil water content were accomplished in the layers of 0.00-0.10; 0.10-0.20; 0.20-0.40 and 0.40-0.60m. Starting from the obtained results it was concluded that the production systems presented values of RP more elevated until to 0.20m; the treatment rye-grass/common bean, oat/soybean, vetch/corn presented the largest values of RP along the soil profile.

Técnicas que envolvem a utilização da instrumentação agronômica com vistas em determinar o conteúdo de água no solo são de grande importância para a pesquisa científica. Independentemente da técnica utilizada, é importante que, na determinação da função K(teta), por exemplo, a umidade volumétrica seja determinada de forma precisa e, de preferência, que haja facilidade na sua obtenção. Com o objetivo de comparar a performance da sonda de nêutrons e do TDR com o tensiômetro, buscando verificar a sensibilidade destes equipamentos na obtenção da umidade do solo e da função condutividade hidráulica K(teta), a partir dos dados da curva de retenção de água no solo, foi instalado um experimento no município de Piracicaba (SP), em um Nitossolo Vermelho distrófico latossólico. Para tanto, foram instalados numa área de 7,07 m², 30 tensiômetros, três tubos de acesso para sonda de nêutrons e 15 sensores de TDR. Foi utilizado o procedimento do perfil instantâneo, analisando as profundidades de 0,70 e 1,00 m e considerando, no presente estudo, o tensiômetro como equipamento-padrão. Os resultados de umidade e de condutividade hidráulica não saturada obtidos na profundidade de 0,70 m mostraram que o TDR apresentou um comportamento mais próximo ao obtido pelo tensiômetro, quando comparado à sonda de nêutrons e, na profundidade de 1,00 m, a sonda de nêutrons mostrou-se mais eficiente na determinação da umidade e da condutividade hidráulica não saturada.

Local tissue damage induced by crotaline snake venoms includes edema, myonecrosis, hemorrhage, and an inflammatory response associated with a prominent cellular infiltrate. The role of neutrophils in the local tissue damage induced by Bothrops asper snake venom and by myotoxin I, a phospholipase A2 isolated from this venom, was investigated. Male Swiss mice were pretreated with either an antimouse granulocyte rat monoclonal immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody or with isotype-matched control antibody. No significant differences in these local effects were observed between mice pretreated with antigranulocyte antibodies and those receiving control IgG. Moreover, myotoxicity induced by B. asper myotoxin I was similar in neutrophil-depleted and control mice. The role of neutrophils in the process of skeletal muscle regeneration was also assessed. Muscle regeneration was assessed by quantifying the muscle levels of creatine kinase and by morphometric histological analysis of the area comprised by regenerating cells in damaged regions of skeletal muscle. Mice depleted of neutrophils and then injected with B. asper venom showed a more deficient regenerative response than mice pretreated with control IgG. Moreover, a drastic difference in the regenerative response was observed in mice injected with myotoxin I, because animals pretreated with control IgG showed a successful regeneration, whereas those depleted of neutrophils had abundant areas of necrotic tissue that had not been removed 7 days after injection, associated with reduced contents of creatine kinase. It is concluded that (1) neutrophils do not play a significant role in the acute local pathological alterations induced by the venom of B. asper, and (2) neutrophils play a prominent role in the process of skeletal muscle regeneration after injection of B. asper venom and myotoxin I, probably related to the phagocytosis of necrotic material and the recruitment of other inflammatory cells, two events directly associated with a successful muscle regenerative response.

The inflammatory action of jararhagin, a hemorrhagic metalloproteinase from Bothrops jararaca venom, was studied in mice using dorsal air pouches. The injection of the toxin in 6-day-old air pouches resulted in a leukocyte accumulation comparable to that induced by LPS and whole venom. Polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cells were present in this infiltrate, with a predominance of neutrophils. Treatment of jararhagin with 1,10-phenantroline abolished its proteolytic activity and reduced the pro-inflammatory effect in approximately 50%. Cell influx was not observed when jararhagin was injected into 1-hr air pouches devoid of macrophages, except when it was injected together with 10(6) syngeneic peritoneal macrophages. Supernatants of macrophages stimulated in vitro with jararhagin did not induce leukocyte influx in 1-hr air pouches; the influx occurred after injection of the pellets of stimulated cultures. In summary, jararhagin is an important pro-inflammatory component of B. jararaca venom, and its activity is dependent upon the proteolytic activity and the presence of macrophages.

Estudaram-se os efeitos de oito diferentes sistemas de cultivo sobre o estado de agregação na profundidade de 0-10 cm num Planossolo eutrófico, por meio dos seguintes atributos: distribuição dos agregados estáveis em água em diferentes classes de tamanho e diâmetro médio ponderado dos agregados. O ensaio foi instalado no CPATB-EMBRAPA, em Pelotas (RS), num experimento que vem sendo realizado desde 1985. Após 10 anos, nos sistemas de cultivo em que a mobilização do solo foi mínima, a maior concentração dos agregados estáveis em água ocorreu na classe de maior tamanho, enquanto, nos tratamentos de maior ação antrópica, a maior concentração ocorreu nas classes de menor tamanho. Comparando o diâmetro médio ponderado dos agregados obtido no solo mantido sem cultivo com o dos demais sistemas, houve uma redução desse atributo de 1,11 vez com relação à semeadura direta, de 1,80 vez com relação ao sistema tradicional e convencional de cultivo de arroz irrigado e de 2,87 vezes com relação aos sistemas que envolveram sucessão e rotação de culturas. O conteúdo de matéria orgânica, embora tenha diminuído cerca de 30% nos tratamentos que envolveram sucessão e rotação de culturas, em comparação com o solo mantido sem cultivo, correlacionou-se positivamente com o diâmetro médio ponderado de agregados, caracterizando-se como um potencial indicador da desagregação do solo nas condições estudadas.
