Abstract: Aim: To determine the relationships between the functional trait composition of forest communities and environmental gradients across scales and biomes and the role of species relative abundances in these relationships. Location: Global. Time period: Recent. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community‐weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results: Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within‐biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions: Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within‐biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. We recommend assessing the sensitivity of tree functional traits to environmental changes in their geographic context. Furthermore, at a given site, the distribution of tree functional traits appears to be driven more by species presence than species abundance.

- Abstract
Proračunom su procenjeni sledeći parametri radijacionog rizika: ukupna jačina doze gama zračenja (srednja vrednost 28,6 nGy/h), godišnja efektivna doza (srednja vrednost 0,035 mSv) i indeks radijacionog rizika usled spoljašnjeg izlaganja (srednja vrednost 0,169). Procenjene vrednosti navedenih parametara ukazuju na to da ne postoji uvećan radijacioni rizik za stanovništvo ispitanog područja usled terestričkog izlaganja.

The paper presents the results of the analysis dealing with the impact of plant fertilisation in the first year after planting on the leaf morphological characteristics. The analysis was conducted within the research into the potential introduction and adaptation of paulownia to different sites in Serbia. The results related to the effects of fertilisation on the quality of plant leaves are useful for the cultivation of certain types of soil where the morphometric analysis of leaves reveals structure-function relationships, i.e., more detailed indicators of the species' adaptability. The research was conducted in two localities. Sample plots with Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu. and Paulownia fortunei Seem. Hemsl. were established in Obrenovac and Pambukovica, where leaf material was collected for laboratory analysis. The following morphometric leaf characteristics were measured: leaf area, leaf perimeter, leaf lamina length, central nerve length, maximum leaf width, leaf width at 1 cm from the base of the leaf, petiole length, distance between the 3rd and 4th nerve, the number of nerves to the left side of the midrib, and the number of veins to the right side of the midrib. The obtained results of leaf morphometric measurements were statistically processed in the Statgraphics software. Based on the results of measuring the leaf morphometric characteristics, fertilisation has a positive effect on the size of the leaves of the studied paulownia species.

- Abstract
One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global ground-sourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels. Our results indicate that there are ∼73,000 tree species globally, among which ∼9,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. Moreover, almost one-third of all tree species to be discovered may be rare, with very low populations and limited spatial distribution (likely in remote tropical lowlands and mountains). These findings highlight the vulnerability of global forest biodiversity to anthropogenic changes in land use and climate, which disproportionately threaten rare species and thus, global tree richness.

BEECH , *EUROPEAN beech , *MINERALIZATION , *DEAD trees , *NITROGEN , *CARBON , *SOIL management - Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the N storage capacity of litterfall and its impact on C mineralization in beech forests. The research was conducted at 15 sample plots under European beech stands located in different ecological conditions on the territory of Serbia. More than half (53%) of the sample plots are characterized by low and very low litterfall N content (<8 g·kg-1; 9-12 g·kg-1), and a wide C/N ratio, which indicates a slow decomposition of the organic soil layer. These results could be useful indicators of the capacity and dynamics of litterfall N storage and its impact on C mineralization in the context of preserving biodiversity, stability, and longevity of beech forests in Serbia. FOREST declines , *DEFOLIATION , *METEOROLOGICAL stations , *CLIMATE extremes , *DROUGHTS - Abstract
The paper presents the results of research on the influence of climatic factors on the occurrence of defoliation and decline of forests as a final outcome. The research was conducted in a mixed beech and fir forest, in the period from 2004 to 2019 at sample plot 415 - Maljen, as a representative example of forest decline, which is part of regular monitoring conducted on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Due to the fact that defoliation may be due to the influence of various factors, research, analysis and results are focused on long-term trends. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the degree of influence of climatic parameters on the occurrence of defoliation. Data on temperatures and precipitation in the period 2004-2019 were processed and analyzed on a monthly and annual basis, as well as in the vegetation period, for the main meteorological station Valjevo, which is closest to sample plot 415. Also, drought assessment was performed during this research period based on Lang's rain factor, de Martonne aridity index and climate diagram by Walter. In order to confirm these methods, the Standardized Precipitation Index was calculated as one of the method that has been mostly used in drought identification lately. It was stated that the defoliation of trees was initiated by extreme climatic events during three consecutive drought years (2011-2013), after which there was the largest decline of forests in the researched area. NATURE conservation , *PROTECTED areas , *GOVERNMENT business enterprises , *FINANCIAL databases , *SPECIES , *NATIONAL parks & reserves - Abstract
Monitoring of protected species within protected areas (PA) is an important component of PA management. In addition to the framework that defines the basic preconditions for PA management and the financing mechanisms that ensure sustainable financing for PA, a structural component of PA management is monitoring of protected species and changes in PA over a long period of time. In Serbia, key monitoring is carried out by the Institute for Nature Conservation as well as by PA managers. This research aimed to identify the management practices utilized for monitoring PA by different groups of managers. To do so, the organization of monitoring of protected species was observed. The survey indicated that monitoring in most PA is conducted by a ranger service, and experts are only present when public enterprises manage national parks. A lack of databases was identified for most PA managers, except the public enterprise Vojvodinašume, and the problems related to reintroduction of species are mostly financial. Therefore, in the next period, it is necessary to improve this aspect of PA management by providing additional financial resources and better organizing the monitoring of protected species in Serbia.
