- Abstract
Ancient DNA research in the past decade has revealed that European population structure changed dramatically in the prehistoric period (14,000–3000 years before present, YBP), reflecting the widespread introduction of Neolithic farmer and Bronze Age Steppe ancestries. However, little is known about how population structure changed from the historical period onward (3000 YBP - present). To address this, we collected whole genomes from 204 individuals from Europe and the Mediterranean, many of which are the first historical period genomes from their region (e.g. Armenia and France). We found that most regions show remarkable inter-individual heterogeneity. At least 7% of historical individuals carry ancestry uncommon in the region where they were sampled, some indicating cross-Mediterranean contacts. Despite this high level of mobility, overall population structure across western Eurasia is relatively stable through the historical period up to the present, mirroring geography. We show that, under standard population genetics models with local panmixia, the observed level of dispersal would lead to a collapse of population structure. Persistent population structure thus suggests a lower effective migration rate than indicated by the observed dispersal. We hypothesize that this phenomenon can be explained by extensive transient dispersal arising from drastically improved transportation networks and the Roman Empire’s mobilization of people for trade, labor, and military. This work highlights the utility of ancient DNA in elucidating finer scale human population dynamics in recent history.

- Abstract
The research presented in this study was conducted within the program IATEKA-Interdisciplinary Approach to the Territorial Evolution of Kvarner Archipelago (Croatia) (UBFC-ISITE) on a corpus of the 5th-century insular population from two late antique sites: Mirine-Fulfinum on the island of Krk and Martinšćica on the island of Cres. Both living conditions and status of the inhabitants of those two sites are here studied through an interdisciplinary approach, combining, and confronting archaeological contexts with bioarchaeological, isotopic and aDNA data. The study showed that all members of these communities, of local and foreign origin, lived in harsh conditions and experienced a very low quality of life, regardless of their social status as given by the archaeological context. This led us to reconsider the definition of “privileged members of society” in the insular, northeastern Adriatic environments in the 5thcentury.

The present article aims to introduce the IATEKA programme “Interdisciplinary Approach to the Territorial Evolution of the Kvarner Archipelago” and its first results, started in 2018 and focused on examining the long-term relationship between humans and their environment, with a particular focus on the construction, management and transformation of the island territories and landscapes of the Kvarner Archipelago, as well as the fluctuation of the different populations and their impact and/or adjustment to the particular environment. As an interdisciplinary programme, methods and results obtained in the field of sedimentary and landscape archaeology, physical anthropology or bioarchaeology, specific analyses such as stable isotopes, ancient DNA, paleobiology and sedimentology are brought to a new level of inter-examination. Although this programme aims to approach the questions of human-environment interactions over a long, or even very long period in as comprehensive a manner as possible and through an interdisciplinary approach, the article focuses only on the results of the palynological studies, relating to the period between Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Indeed, the results obtained on the lake sediments allow us to better understand the evolution of the environment of one of the islands of the archipelago, the island of Cres. It also seemed impossible to approach the changes observed for the period of Late Antiquity stricto sensu without addressing, even if only briefly, the character traits of the region that were established from the beginning of Antiquity and the effective presence of Roman power in the region.

Despite the initial 'trials and tribulations' of a new practice of analysis and documentation of elevations in France in the late 1970s, the teaching of building archaeology in university courses came late. A few 'centers' stood out in the second half of the 1990s around pioneers of the discipline, such as Paris 1 Sorbonne or the Centre d’études médiévales d'Auxerre-UMR ARTEHIS. Thus, beginner’s trainings in drawing techniques for building archaeology and in the archaeological reading of elevations were undertaken by the CEM as early as 1998, and a teaching position specializing in building archaeology was created in 2003 at Paris 1 Sorbonne university. A decade later, one can still mention the courses taught at Lyon 2 and Strasbourg, based on the history of religious architecture or castral and urban archaeology.Along with the development of the teaching of medieval buildings archaeology of medieval buildings, the ENS has been developing for some years the notion of 'construction archaeology' applied to ancient architecture.Obviously several universities now offer training - or an introduction - to the methods of building archaeology in various forms. It is sometimes integrated into the methodological and archaeometric courses of the broad-based Masters’ degrees in archaeology (it is the case, for example, in Tours or Rennes), or offered as a professional path (as in Lyon or, more recently, in Besançon), or, exceptionally, taught within the framework of a specific cursus, as the Master's degree in Architecture and Archaeology at Strasbourg university (heir of a DESS).Although the practice of building archaeology is becoming the norm in France, it has not yet been generalized in all regions or clearly legislated ; training remains insufficient and is struggling to adapt to the new challenges. These are linked to the different expectations and requirements of the many institutional players, as well as those of "field practitioners", to the considerable developments in new technologies - with their contributions and their limits - and to new fields of investigation. However, it seems important at this time, in conjunction with ongoing reflections on the heritage policies issues and the place of archaeology, to be able to train future specialists in the archaeology of buildings future specialists capable of assuming the role of key players in the implementation of study protocols on the 'built environment'. A greater visibility of training courses in the archaeology of buildings, aimed both at students and institutions, is also necessary its sustainability and to generalize its practices.

- Abstract
Present-day people from England and Wales have more ancestry derived from early European farmers (EEF) than did people of the Early Bronze Age1. To understand this, here we generated genome-wide data from 793 individuals, increasing data from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in Britain by 12-fold, and western and central Europe by 3.5-fold. Between 1000 and 875 BC, EEF ancestry increased in southern Britain (England and Wales) but not northern Britain (Scotland) due to incorporation of migrants who arrived at this time and over previous centuries, and who were genetically most similar to ancient individuals from France. These migrants contributed about half the ancestry of people of England and Wales from the Iron Age, thereby creating a plausible vector for the spread of early Celtic languages into Britain. These patterns are part of a broader trend of EEF ancestry becoming more similar across central and western Europe in the Middle to the Late Bronze Age, coincident with archaeological evidence of intensified cultural exchange2-6. There was comparatively less gene flow from continental Europe during the Iron Age, and the independent genetic trajectory in Britain is also reflected in the rise of the allele conferring lactase persistence to approximately 50% by this time compared to approximately 7% in central Europe where it rose rapidly in frequency only a millennium later. This suggests that dairy products were used in qualitatively different ways in Britain and in central Europe over this period.

- Abstract
Present-day people from England and Wales harbour more ancestry derived from Early European Farmers (EEF) than people of the Early Bronze Age . To understand this, we generated genome-wide data from 793 individuals, increasing data from the Middle to Late Bronze and Iron Age in Britain by 12-fold, and Western and Central Europe by 3.5-fold. Between 1000 and 875 BC, EEF ancestry increased in southern Britain (England and Wales) but not northern Britain (Scotland) due to incorporation of migrants who arrived at this time and over previous centuries, and who were genetically most similar to ancient individuals from France. These migrants contributed about half the ancestry of Iron Age people of England and Wales, thereby creating a plausible vector for the spread of early Celtic languages into Britain. These patterns are part of a broader trend of EEF ancestry becoming more similar across central and western Europe in the Middle to Late Bronze Age, coincident with archaeological evidence of intensified cultural exchange . There was comparatively less gene flow from continental Europe during the Iron Age, and Britain's independent genetic trajectory is also reflected in the rise of the allele conferring lactase persistence to ~50% by this time compared to ~7% in central Europe where it rose rapidly in frequency only a millennium later. This suggests that dairy products were used in qualitatively different ways in Britain and in central Europe over this period. [Abstract copyright: © 2021. Croatie, Osor, monastere, architecture romane, vestibule - Abstract
Before the presentation of the 2016 campaign, the results of campaign 2015 are briefly cited. The completion of the excavation of the reduced church, the further analysis of its structures as well as the stratigraphical analysis allowed us to reformulate our hypothesis and advance our knowledge of the first church on the site which seems to have had a cruciform ground plan and have been built in the proto-Byzantine period. This year’s campaign was mostly carried out in the area of the Romanesque church vestibule (sector V) and of its north-east exterior (sector VI). Among most important contributions is the discovery of the large vessel found in the northern part of the vestibule whose space was clearly partitioned both in elevation (partition in bays) and at ground level (privileged burials in the central bay, infant burials in the southern bay). Numerous medieval tombs were found and excavated in the sector VI, as well as two graves from iron age that were discovered under the medieval built tombs in front of the vestibule
