The diversification of angiosperms has largely been attributed to adaptive radiation of their pollination and mating systems, which are relevant drivers of the macroevolution processes. The fig (Ficus, Moraceae) and fig wasp (Agaonidae, Hymenoptera) interaction is an example of obligate mutualism. Passive and active pollination modes have been associated with morphological traits in both partners. However, more information is required to assess the relationship between floral traits and pollination modes, particularly in Neotropical Ficus species.This study evaluates the morphological traits of figs and fig wasps regarding pollination modes in species belonging to Neotropical Ficus sections (three species each of Americanae and Pharmacosycea). Pollination mode was identified by floral morphology, anther/ovule ratio, and specialized structures fig wasps use for pollen transport (pollen pocket and coxal combs).Fig species in sect. Americanae are actively pollinated because pistillate flowers form a synstigma, present anther/ovule ratios <0.11, and their pollinator Pegoscapus fig wasps have pollen pockets and coxal combs. In contrast, species in sect. Pharmacosycea have free pistillate flowers, with anther/ovule ratios >0.27; they are pollinated by Tetrapus wasps, which lack specialized structures to carry pollen. Each species of Ficus was associated with a single morphospecies of fig wasp.The results support previous contributions that consider reciprocal morphological traits between fig species and their pollinating wasps as evidence of a close co‐evolutionary history. La evaluación es el último principio instruccional que cierra el proceso enseñanza/aprendizaje. Si teóricamente la evaluación contrasta las intenciones con los resultados, orientando la toma de decisiones; en la práctica, compara los objetivos propuestos con los resultados del aprendizaje obtenidos en el proceso enseñanza/aprendizaje a partir del contraste con unos criterios preestablecidos, y procede a la toma de decisiones sobre la superación o no de la materia. La evaluación ha de ser programada eligiendo los métodos adecuados y definiendo su temporalización. Cualquier método de evaluación debe ser válido, en el sentido que mida aquello que queremos; debe ser fiable, esto es, que permita un cierto grado de confianza en los resultados obtenidos, y justo, es decir que exista concordancia entre las enseñanzas y lo que se exige. No existe un método de evaluación universalmente válido, la elección depende de los objetivos planteados y de los contenidos. Objective: To describe the macroscopic and microscopic alterations observed in the central nervous system (CNS) in patients who died through HIV-AIDS infection. Method used: Retrospective study of autopsies from January 1st 2004 to December 31st 2007 in a third-level public hospital at Bucaramanga, Santander. Results: The most common neuro-pathological findings in patients who died through HIV-AIDS infection were cerebral toxoplasmosis, 17 cases (28.3%); followed by cerebral cryptococcosis, 7 cases (11.6%); CNS tuberculosis, 3 cases (5%); HIV encephalitis, 2 cases (3.3%); and bacterial meningitis, 1 case (1.6%). Neoplasm lesions, CMV infection, herpes infection, histoplasmosis, and progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (PML) were not found in any case. In this study, changes were seen in the CNS in 32 cases (53.1%), which after the respiratory system (39-65%) was the most affected system for complications related to HIV infection. HIV-induced encephalopathy simultaneously with an opportunistic infection was only found in 1 case (1.6%). Conclusion: In Bucaramanga, opportunistic infections are the most frequent and serious complications in the CNS of individuals with HIV-AIDS; among them cerebral toxoplasmosis was the most frequently observed complication in the CNS of patients with HIV-AIDS, appearing morphologically as a meningoencephalitis with necrosis and large lesions localized in the gangliobasal region. The authors had an academic meeting to face the challenge to provide clean water and to dispose of wastewaters once treated to reduce pollution impacts and to recycle the treated effluent. Chemistry plays a substantial role to the solution of removing pollutants since chemical reactions are crucial to increase the final quality of the treated effluents. A viable option might be the installation of units using the artificial wetlands technology. There microbial consortia carry these chemical reactions. Two case studies were considered, Mexico and Cuba. An example of the use of artificial wetlands to solve the lack of sanitation facilities for Mexico City's Tlalpan section is given using as example two prototype plants located near this neighbourhood so that climate conditions will not interfere in the chemical reactions. Background: Third molar displacement (TM) is a rare complication that occurs in both the maxilla and the mandible and can be of complete teeth or root fragments., Objective: The objective of this article was to perform a systematic review of the articles published on third molar displacement during the surgical procedure, analyzing the predisposing factors, the cause, symptomatology, and treatment used to resolve this complication., Material And methods: A systematic review was performed. The review included articles on displacement of third molars to different anatomical spaces; articles dealing with displacement of teeth other than third molars, displacement of surgical instruments or displacement of materials were excluded., Results: Fifty articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The most frequent site to which a third molar is displaced in the maxilla is to the infratemporal fossa while in the mandible it is to the submandibular space. The incidence was higher in women than in men with a 2:1 rate., Conclusion: When displacement occurs, the risk/benefit of immediate or delayed extraction should be assessed. If there is a risk to vital structures and there is no symptomatology, it can be kept under follow-up. Recent climate change should result in expansion of species to northern or high elevation range margins, and contraction at southern and low elevation margins in the northern hemisphere, because of local extirpations or range shifts or both. We combined museum occurrence records from both the continental U.S. and Mexico with a new eco-physiological model of extinction developed for lizard families of the world to predict the distributions of 30 desert-endemic reptile and amphibian species under climate change scenarios. The model predicts that 38 % of local populations will go extinct in the next 50 years, across all 30 species. However, extinctions may be attenuated in forested sites and by the presence of montane environments in contemporary ranges. Of the 30 species, three were at very high risk of extinction as a result of their thermal limits being exceeded, which illustrates the predictive value of ecophysiological modeling approaches for conservation studies. In tandem with global strategies of limiting CO 2 emissions, we propose urgent regional management strategies for existing and new reserves that are targeted at three species: Barred Tiger Salamander (Ambystomatidae: Ambystoma mavortium stebbinsi), Desert Short-horned Lizard (Phrynosomatidae: Phrynosoma ornatissimum), and Morafka's Desert Tortoise (Testudinidae: Gopherus morafkai), which face a high risk of extinction by 2070. These strategies focus on assisted migration and preservation within climatic refugia, such as high-elevation and forested habitats. We forecast where new reserves should be established by merging our model of extinction risk with gap analysis. We also highlight that acclimation (i.e., phenotypic plasticity) could ameliorate risk of extinction but is rarely included in ecophysiological models. Colorectal adenocarcinoma (COREAD) is the second most deadly cancer and third most frequently encountered malignancy worldwide. Despite efforts in molecular subtyping and subsequent personalized COREAD treatments, multidisciplinary evidence suggests separating COREAD into colon cancer (COAD) and rectal cancer (READ). This new perspective could improve diagnosis and treatment of both carcinomas. RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), as critical regulators of every hallmark of cancer, could fulfill the need to identify sensitive biomarkers for COAD and READ separately. To detect new RBPs involved in COAD and READ progression, here we used a multidata integration strategy to prioritize tumorigenic RBPs. We analyzed and integrated 1) RBPs genomic and transcriptomic alterations from 488 COAD and 155 READ patients, 2) ∼ 10,000 raw associations between RBPs and cancer genes, 3) ∼ 15,000 immunostainings, and 4) loss-of-function screens performed in 102 COREAD cell lines. Thus, we unraveled new putative roles of NOP56, RBM12, NAT10, FKBP1A, EMG1, and CSE1L in COAD and READ progression. Interestingly, FKBP1A and EMG1 have never been related with any of these carcinomas but presented tumorigenic features in other cancer types. Subsequent survival analyses highlighted the clinical relevance of FKBP1A, NOP56, and NAT10 mRNA expression to predict poor prognosis in COREAD and COAD patients. The recovery of soil conditions is crucial for successful ecosystem restoration and, hence, for achieving the goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Here, we assess how soils resist forest conversion and agricultural land use, and how soils recover during subsequent tropical forest succession on abandoned agricultural fields. Our overarching question is how soil resistance and recovery depend on local conditions such as climate, soil type and land-use history. For 300 plots in 21 sites across the Neotropics, we used a chronosequence approach in which we sampled soils from two depths in old-growth forests, agricultural fields (i.e. crop fields and pastures), and secondary forests that differ in age (1-95 years) since abandonment. We measured six soil properties using a standardized sampling design and laboratory analyses. Soil resistance strongly depended on local conditions. Croplands and sites on high-activity clay (i.e. high fertility) show strong increases in bulk density and decreases in pH, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) during deforestation and subsequent agricultural use. Resistance is lower in such sites probably because of a sharp decline in fine root biomass in croplands in the upper soil layers, and a decline in litter input from formerly productive old-growth forest (on high-activity clays). Soil recovery also strongly depended on local conditions. During forest succession, high-activity clays and croplands decreased most strongly in bulk density and increased in C and N, possibly because of strongly compacted soils with low C and N after cropland abandonment, and because of rapid vegetation recovery in high-activity clays leading to greater fine root growth and litter input. Furthermore, sites at low precipitation decreased in pH, whereas sites at high precipitation increased in N and decreased in C : N ratio. Extractable phosphorus (P) did not recover during succession, suggesting increased P limitation as forests age. These results indicate that no single solution exists for effective soil restoration and that local site conditions should determine the restoration strategies. The syconium is the urn-shaped inflorescence shared by all species of the genus Ficus. The orifice at the apex of the syconium is called the ostiole, and it is covered by interlocking bracts. The ostiolar bracts can have different arrangements, which only allow the entry of mutualist wasps and promote reproductive isolation among Ficus species. Here, we analyze the ostiolar structures that could play a role as selective filter and therefore impact the fig-fig wasp mutualism in the neotropical Ficus sections Americanae and Pharmacosycea. Samples of syconia with pistillate flowers during the receptive phase of seven species of Ficus were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Tests for histolocalization of substances were employed to detect secretory activity throughout the ostiolar tissues. Our results indicated that the ostiole has two components: ostiolar bracts and the periostiolar zone. Interspecies variation in ostiolar bract arrangement in both sections studied was broader than previously reported. We report for the first time for Ficus: (i) two types of ostiolar osmophores (mesophyll and diffuse), that could be a source of volatile compounds for attracting fig wasps; (ii) colleters in the axil of ostiolar bracts, which probably lubricate and facilitate the entry of pollinating wasps into the syconial cavity; (iii) secretory trichomes around the ostiolar bracts, and (iv) syconium basal bracts (F. isophlebia) covering the ostiole, which are the first physical barrier that the fig wasps must overcome to access receptive pistillate flowers. We describe the zones that compose the ostiole, which support the hypothesis that the ostiole is a selective filter in the interactions of fig trees with Agaonidae fig wasps. We also suggest that ostiolar osmophores, colleters, the periostiolar zone, and the arrangements of the ostiolar bracts may be informative with respect to Ficus systematics., (© 2022. Problem: Unknown or idiopathic infertility has been associated with urogenital tract dysbiosis, reducing pregnancy and delivery ratios during assisted reproductive treatments (ART). The Ligilactobacillus salivarius PS11610 strain has shown extraordinary antimicrobial activity in vitro against urogenital pathogens as well as other probiotic characteristics. Therefore, an intervention study was performed to evaluate the effect of L. salivarius PS11610 on the microbial composition of urogenital tract in infertile couples with bacterial dysbiosis., Method of Study: Seventeen couples undergoing ART diagnosed with unknown infertility were selected. After confirming urogenital dysbiosis, they started a 6-month treatment with L. salivarius PS11610 (1 dose/12 h for female and 1 dose/24 h for male). Vaginal, seminal, glans, uterine and plasma samples were collected for determination of the microbiome and immune profile at the beginning and the end of the treatment., Results: Supplementation with L. salivarius PS11610 significantly modified the urogenital microbiome composition in male and female samples, solving dysbiosis of 67% of the couples. Pathogens disappeared from the vaginal samples whereas Lactobacilli percentage increased after 3 and 6 months of treatment. Moreover, L. salivarius PS11610 changed the uterine microbiome that could be associated with a change of the uterine immune profile. Additionally, the probiotic intake could be associated with the observed change in the systemic immunological profile of couples. Finally, the pregnant and delivery ratio were improved., Conclusions: Probiotic supplementation with L. salivarius PS11610 improved the male and female urogenital tract microbiome, modulating the immune system and increasing pregnancy success in couples undergoing ART., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Forests that regrow naturally on abandoned fields are important for restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services, but can they also preserve the distinct regional tree floras? Using the floristic composition of 1215 early successional forests (≤20 years) in 75 human-modified landscapes across the Neotropic realm, we identified 14 distinct floristic groups, with a between-group dissimilarity of 0.97. Floristic groups were associated with location, bioregions, soil pH, temperature seasonality, and water availability. Hence, there is large continental-scale variation in the species composition of early successional forests, which is mainly associated with biogeographic and environmental factors but not with human disturbance indicators. This floristic distinctiveness is partially driven by regionally restricted species belonging to widespread genera. Early secondary forests contribute therefore to restoring and conserving the distinctiveness of bioregions across the Neotropical realm, and forest restoration initiatives should use local species to assure that these distinct floras are maintained.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a new probiotic strain combination, Ligilactobacillus salivarius subsp infantis PS11603 and Bifidobacterium longum PS10402, on gut bacterial colonization of preterm infants., Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in preterm infants from 28 weeks + 0days to 30 weeks + 6days of gestation. Thirty preterm infants were randomly selected after birth to receive either probiotics or placebo. Stool samples were collected before product intake and then sequentially during the first weeks of their admission. Classical microbiological, metagenomics and multiplex immunological analyses were performed to assess the bacterial and immune profile of the samples., Results: Twenty-seven infants completed the study (14 vs 13, probiotic and placebo groups). A higher number of participants were colonized by Lactobacilli in the probiotic group than in the placebo group (93% vs 46%; P  = 0.013). Similar results were obtained when analysing bifidobacterial colonization (100% vs 69%; P  = 0.041). Earlier colonization was observed in the probiotics group versus the placebo group, specifically 5 weeks for Lactobacillus and 1 week for Bifidobacterium. Although no effect was observed in the faecal immunological profile, a decreasing trend could be observed in Th17 response during the first week of probiotic treatment. None of the adverse events (AEs) registered were related to product intake., Conclusion: Probiotic supplementation with L salivarius PS11603 and B longum subsp. infantis PS10402 enhanced an earlier colonization of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in preterm infants' guts in 5 and 1 week, respectively. Tropical forests disappear rapidly because of deforestation, yet they have the potential to regrow naturally on abandoned lands. We analyze how 12 forest attributes recover during secondary succession and how their recovery is interrelated using 77 sites across the tropics. Tropical forests are highly resilient to low-intensity land use; after 20 years, forest attributes attain 78% (33 to 100%) of their old-growth values. Recovery to 90% of old-growth values is fastest for soil (<1 decade) and plant functioning (<2.5 decades), intermediate for structure and species diversity (2.5 to 6 decades), and slowest for biomass and species composition (>12 decades). Network analysis shows three independent clusters of attribute recovery, related to structure, species diversity, and species composition. Secondary forests should be embraced as a low-cost, natural solution for ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous and complex disease characterized by the absence of immunohistochemical expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and HER2. These breast tumors present an aggressive biology and offer few opportunities to be treated with targeted therapy resulting in bad disease outcomes. The epidemiology of TNBC is intriguing where the understanding of its biology has progressed quickly. One of the peculiarities of this type of cancer is a high prevalence in Afrodescendants and Hispanic patients compared to Caucasian women. In this review we describe some features of TNBC, focusing in the Hispanic population, such as epidemiological, clinicopathological features and molecular features and the correlation between TNBC prevalence and the human development index., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V.
