A new black seed coat soybean variety, 'Socheong 2' was developed at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2006. 'Socheong 2' was selected from the cross between 'Milyang78' and 'Peking'. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this variety were carried out from 2005 to 2009. It has determinate growth habit, white flower, brown pubescence, black pod color, black seed coat, green cotyledon, elongated flattened seed shape, oval leaf shape and small seed size (12.2 grams per 100 seeds). And it has the same maturity as the check cultivar Cheongjakong. 'Socheong 2' has better seed quality than that of the check cultivar in isoflavone contents (2,031 μg/g), and it has good adaptability for 'Cheongkugjiang' and soybean malt. It also has been identified to have resistance to soybean mosaic virus symptom (SMV) which was the troublesome soybean diseases. The average yield of 'Socheong 2' was 2.00 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials carried out in five locations of Korea among seven from 2007 to 2009, which was 7 percent higher than that of the check cultivar 'Cheongjakong'. A new black seed coat soybean cultivar, 'Geomjeong 5' was developed at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2009. The goal of breeding was to develop a cultivar with high yield, lodging tolerance, and resistance to disease such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV), and bacterial pustule. 'Geomjeong 5' was selected from the cross between 'Shinpaldal 2', showing yellow seed coat, lodging tolerance, and high yield, and 'Geomgjeong 2', showing yellow cotyledon, large seed size, and black seed coat. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for this cultivar were carried out from 2005 to 2009. It has determinate growth habit, purple flower, brown pubescence, brown pod color, black seed coat, yellow cotyledon, spherical seed shape, oval leaf shape and middle seed size (23.2 grams per 100 seeds). It was 6 days later in maturity than the check cultivar 'Ilpumgeomjeongkong'. It has good physical property for black tofu. Leaf of a soybean landrace and introduced variety from Japan, 'Danpaheug', have been extensively used as a vegetable for wrapping with fish and meat in Jeju province and southern part of the Korea but it had poor leaf quality because of ununiform size of leaves. Therefore, development of soybean cultivars for vegetable leaf is required. A new soybean cultivar for vegetable leaf with black seed coat, 'Cheongyeob 1' was developed at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), Milyang, in 2009. The 'Cheongyeob 1' was selected from the cross between 'Ilpumgeomjeong', yellow seed coat, lodging tolerance, and high yield, and 'Daehwang', large seed size and leaves. It had white flower, black seed coat, yellow cotyledon, spherical flattened seed shape, oval leaf shape and large seed size (35.8 grams per 100 seeds). It also had the special features for vegetable use of the soybean leaves such as late flowering large and round shape of light green leaf, lodging tolerance, many stem nodes, and thick stem diameter. The soybean leaf yield of the 'Cheongyeob 1' cultivated at the green house recorded 18.44 ton per hectare which was 6% higher than that of the control 'Danpaheug'. The farmer's leaf income of 'Cheongyeob 1' was also high with 81.68 million won per hectare which was 93% higher than the control landrace. In addition, the soybean leaf had high isoflavone contents with 809 μg/g which was 63% higher than that of the control 'Danpaheug'. This result indicates that the new black seed coat soybean cultivar, 'Cheongyeob 1' is a suitable for a vegetable use of leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
