Abstract

Reported herein is a stretchable strain-tolerant soft printed circuit board (SPCB) following optimized circuit design rules. Inkjet-printed interconnects with a wrinkled structure and rigid epoxy patterns allow the outstanding stretchability and strain distribution controllability of the SPCB, respectively. The prototype circuits show reliable operation under various mechanical deformations, even in the 180° folding state and the irregular deformed state with 25% tensile strain. This research paves a promising route for the realization of highly reliable soft printed circuits with a high degree of design freedom, which can thus be used for driver chip mounting or driver board interconnection for the stretchable display applications. Abstract

As two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides electronic devices are scaled down to the sub-micrometer regime, the active layers of these materials are exposed to high lateral electric fields, resulting in electrical breakdown. In this regard, understanding the intrinsic nature in layer-stacked 2D semiconducting materials under high lateral electric fields is necessary for the reliable applications of their field-effect transistors. Here, we explore the electrical breakdown phenomena originating from avalanche multiplication in MoS2field-effect transistors with different layer thicknesses and channel lengths. Modulating the band structure and bandgap energy in MoS2allows the avalanche multiplication to be controlled by adjusting the number of stacking layers. This phenomenon could be observed in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconducting systems due to its quantum confinement effect on the band structure. The relationship between the critical electric field for avalanche breakdown and bandgap energy is well fitted to a power law curve in both monolayer and multilayer MoS2.

Abstract

In this paper, our effort in strain‐engineered platform technology for stretchable hybrid electronics (SHE) is reviewed, which includes mold‐based substrate thickness modulation, printed‐rigid‐island embedding, printed pure‐epoxy banks patterning, and liquid‐metal floating chip‐bonding structure. The platforms using those strategies excellently suppressed highly localized stress at transition area between rigid and soft components and thus protected elements (surface mount chips, light emitting diodes, sensors, etc.) from breakage under tensile strain conditions. Although each structure has its own pros and cons, electronic systems with such structure stably operate for tensile strain up to 10s percent.

Abstract

Stretchable displays, capable of reversible expansion, represent significant advancements in free‐form display technologies. However, the high Poisson's ratio (ν) of elastomer substrates leads to unintended deformation under tensile strain, resulting in image warping. To address this, a meta‐elastomer (ME) substrate with a bidirectional zero ν, incorporating a self‐deformable soft mechanical metamaterial (MM) frame, is introduced. The ν of the ME is precisely programmed by the interaction between the deformation of the MM frame, which exhibits a negative ν, and the elastomer matrix, which has a positive ν. The soft MM frame, stiffer than the elastomer matrix, undergoes both structural deformation and length alteration during substrate tensile strain. This synergistic effect enables achieving a nearly bidirectional zero ν, thus overcoming the limitations of conventional tessellated rigid MM composites. Furthermore, the ME substrate, which is chemically cross‐linked at the junction interface, demonstrates exceptional mechanical robustness, enduring over 180% stretching and more than 10 000 cycles. By counteracting the Poisson's effect, the ME substrate with an integrated pixel array ensures translational pixel movement along the tensile axis during bidirectional stretching, minimizing undesired pixel movement in other directions. Abstract

Precise monitoring of human body signals can be achieved by soft, conformal contact and precise arrangement of wearable devices to the desired body positions. So far, no design and fabrication methodology in soft wearable devices is able to address the variations in the form factor of the human body such as the various sizes and shapes of individual body parts, which can significantly cause misalignments and the corresponding inaccurate monitoring. Here, a concept of soft modular electronic blocks (SMEBs) enabling the assembly of soft wearable systems onto human skin with functions and layouts tailored to the form factors of individuals' bodies is presented. Three types of SMEBs are developed as fundamental building blocks for functional modularization. The physical design of SMEBs is optimized for a mechanically stable island‐bridge configuration. The prepared SMEBs can be integrated onto a target body part through rapid, room‐temperature (RT) assembly (<5 s) using an oxygen plasma‐induced siloxane bonding method. A soft metacarpophalangeal (MP) joints flexion monitoring system that is tailored to allow for accurate monitoring for multiple individuals with unique joint and hand sizes is demonstrated. Soft modular electronic blocks (SMEBs) enable wearable health‐monitoring systems that can be tailored to target body parts of various users. The prepared SMEBs are integrated on human skin through rapid, room‐temperature assembly using an oxygen plasma‐induced siloxane bonding method.
