1. Site-selective cavity readout and classical error correction of a 5-bit atomic register

Abstract

Optical cavities can provide fast and non-destructive readout of individual atomic qubits; however, scaling up to many qubits remains a challenge. Using locally addressed excited-state Stark shifts to tune atoms out of resonance, we realize site-selective hyperfine-state cavity readout across a 10-site array. The state discrimination fidelity is 0.994(1) for one atom and 0.989(2) averaged over the entire array at a survival probability of 0.975(1). To further speed up array readout, we demonstrate adaptive search strategies utilizing global/subset checks. Finally, we demonstrate repeated rounds of classical error correction, showing exponential suppression of logical error and extending logical memory fivefold beyond the single-bit idling lifetime., Comment: BH and JS contributed equally to this work

Abstract

Smart grid interoperability is the means to achieve the twin green and digital transition but re-mains heterogeneous and fragmented to date. This work presents the first ideas and corner-stones of an Interoperability Roadmap for the Energy Transition that is being developed by the Horizon Europe int:net project. This roadmap builds on four cornerstones that address open interoperability issues. These are a knowledge base to address the lack of convergence among existing initiatives, a maturity model and a network of testing and certification facilities to ad-dress the lack of practical tools for the industry, and a governance process to address the gap between standards-related approaches of Standards Development Organisations and Research and Innovation projects. A community of practice will be set up to ensure the continuity of the ongoing activities related to smart grid interoperability. To outlive the duration of the int:net project, the aim is to formalise the community of practice as a legal entity., Comment: 12. Abstract

In order for optical cavities to enable strong light-matter interactions for quantum metrology, networking, and scalability in quantum computing systems, their mirrors must have minimal losses. However, high-finesse dielectric cavity mirrors can degrade in ultra-high vacuum (UHV), increasing the challenges of upgrading to cavity-coupled quantum systems. We observe the optical degradation of high-finesse dielectric optical cavity mirrors after high-temperature UHV bake in the form of a substantial increase in surface roughness. We provide an explanation of the degradation through atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), selective wet etching, and optical measurements. We find the degradation is explained by oxygen reduction in Ta$_2$O$_5$ followed by growth of tantalum sub-oxide defects with height to width aspect ratios near ten. We discuss the dependence of mirror loss on surface roughness and finally give recommendations to avoid degradation to allow for quick adoption of cavity-coupled systems.

Abstract

Heterotopic ossification, also termed osseous metaplasia, is a known pathological condition of bone formation in extraskeletal sites. Its widespread occurrence in tumors is infrequent and the presentation in neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract is very rare. Previous studies described different subtypes of benign and malign gastrointestinal tumors exhibiting areas of stromal osseous metaplasia. The relevance of its presence in the stroma of epithelial tumors, as well as the pathogenesis, remains still unknown. We report a case of mucinous carcinoma with osseous metaplasia. The tumor was located in the cecum and was composed of atypical epithelial glands, pools of extracellular mucin, calcifications, necrosis, and stromal osseous metaplasia. Metaplastic bone fragments histologically displayed a benign appearance. The tumor was staged as advanced and presented with perforation. Perforated colorectal carcinoma is frequently presented as an emergency case, and prompt surgical management is imperative.

9. Evaluation of amino acid composition in different types of meat and plant-based burger patties

Abstract

The study examined the protein content and amino acid composition of various commercially available plant-based and meat-based burger patties. The aim of this study was to determine whether plant-based burger patties meet the requirement for essential amino acid content in the human diet. Amino acid profiles were determined using the Amino Acid Analyzer and FAO/WHO guidelines were considered for essential amino acid requirements. In this study, the protein content and amino acid composition of various meat-based burger patties (ABB), including chicken, pork and beef, and plant-based burgers (PBB) were analysed. The results showed that among the plant-based samples, PBB 4 had the highest protein content (24.81 g / 100 g), which was almost equal to that of ABB 1 (26.48 g / 100 g). The most abundant amino acids detected were Glu, Asp, Leu, Lys, Arg, Ser, Pro and Gly, with samples PBB 6, PBB 3 and ABB 1 having the highest concentrations. PBB 1 stood out as a valuable protein source with the highest content of essential amino acids (400.08 mg/g protein) among the plant-based burger patties. Some plant-based burger patties were deficient in essential amino acids, with PBB 3 and PBB 4 having the highest deficiency. The practical value of this study is that it helps people to make informed dietary choices.

Abstract

Economic growth and environmental sustainability nowadays are considered to be of particular importance, so understanding the main contributing factors is very important as well. This paper aims to examine the common determinants of economic growth and environmental sustainability, inspect the relationship between these key elements, and check their significance in economic growth and environmental sustainability. With data from EU member states for a period of ten years (2011-2020) the panel autoregressive distributed lag technique (ARDL) is used for the aim of this paper. Common determinants such as recycling and environmental taxes were found to be the major contributors to economic growth in the long run. Recycling is found to be a major contributor to environmental sustainability as well, however, environmental taxes are detected to have a negative impact on environmental sustainability in the long run, but none of these determinants have any impact in the short run.

15. A rare clinical presentation of pedunculated superficial angiomyxoma in the anal canal: A case report

Abstract

Superficial angiomyxoma is an infrequent benign soft tissue tumor, clinically presented as slow-growing, painless cutaneous, or subcutaneous mass. It is mostly described in middle aged population with preference location in trunk, head, neck, and genitalia. Herein, we report a rare growth variant of a solitary superficial angiomyxoma with uncommon site of occurrence in a 39-year-old female. Pedunculated superficial angiomyxoma originating in anal canal is extremely rare. Histological features of the lesion comprising of spindle-shaped and stellate cells dispersed in myxoid stroma and prominent thin-walled blood vessels defined the diagnosis of superficial angiomyxoma. Tumor cells with immunohistochemistry analysis showed positivity for vimentin and CD34 and negativity for S100, while Ki-67 showed a low proliferation index. The recurrence of superficial angiomyxoma is previously described, but in our case no signs of recurrence were seen in follow-up for a period of 6 months. Superficial angiomyxoma should be considered as differential diagnosis with other polypoid or nodular masses in anal canal.

Abstract

Aim of the study: In recent decades, Kosovo in general and the Llapi River catchment in particular have experienced landscape transformation, which resulted in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) changes, mainly in the flat terrains where most of country’s population is concentrated. Other landscapes have experienced changes too, but on a smaller scale. The aim of the present study was to identify landscape transformation and driving forces behind it. Material and methods: Spatiotemporal changes of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) were recorded using GIS techniques. Land Cover data from Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS) with spatial resolution 100 m for three different years: 2000, 2006 and 2018 were analysed. DEM with 10 m spatial resolution was used to estimate slope steepness and catchment altitude. Population data for settlements inside the Llapi River catchment, represented in features, were imported from the Statistical Agency of Kosovo, and those data include population numbers for official censuses between 1948 until 2011, whereas ArcMap 10.8 environment was used for analysis. Results and conclusions: With GIS technique in analysing Land Use and Land Cover data (LULC) and other open source data, we found that agricultural land have decreased in area, by as much as 9.53%, while the increase of artificial surface was 160.87%. Expressed in absolute values, total size of agricultural areas in 2000 amounted to 37,827 ha, while in 2018, this amounted to 34,334 ha, which is 0.3 ha per capita less than European average. In order to protect agricultural land, zoning and land use plans should be implemented.

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the availability of renewable freshwater resources and their spatiotemporal distribution in the Eastern Region of Kosovo (ERK). As a crucible resource for agricultural, industrial, and commercial activities, water scarcity will lead to water shortages. Kosovo is a landlocked country, and ERK is the most important region for industrial activities (coal, mines) and agricultural use (plains). Located in continental climate conditions, surrounded by middle to high-altitude mountains, the region does not have a favorable spatio-temporal distribution of freshwaters. The determination of the water resources is based on the amount of surface runoff, which being divided per capita, gives indications of the water resources of a region (catchment). For our aims, main river discharge and population statistics are used to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution and availability of renewable freshwater in ERK. Falkenmark Freshwater Indicator with 1.483 m³/capita/year shows that ERK lies under water scarcity, and existing water reservoirs offer low security for water withdrawals, and further reservoirs would prevent water scarcity in the region.

Abstract

Background: Antibiotics remain among the most prescribed drugs in primary healthcare, contributing to increased antibiotic resistance in the community and prevailing as an emerging global health concern. We aimed to quantify the prevalence and quality of antibiotic prescription in primary healthcare settings in the Municipality of Prishtina to identify targets for quality improvement. Methods and Results: This study represents a population-based, retrospective cohort, including data from eight randomly selected family medical centers in the Municipality of Prishtina. Each 150th patient on medical records was assessed for demographic data, diagnosis (ICD-10), antibiotic prescription, antibiotic class, and antibiotic form. In total, the study included 1614 cases reviewed. The antibiotic prescription rate was 16%. The health condition for which most of the cases received antibiotics was J18 - Pneumonia, unspecified organism (67%), followed by J03 - Acute tonsillitis (54%), J42 - Unspecified chronic bronchitis (46%), and N39 - Other disorders of the urinary system (43%) Broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as co-amoxiclav (17.7%), amoxicillin (16.5%), and ceftriaxone (12.6%), featured among the most routinely prescribed antibiotics. The antibiotic prescription rate was the highest for cases in the 3-5 age group, of whom 27% received an antibiotic prescription. In 73% of cases, oral antibiotics were prescribed, 69% of which belong to the WHO AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) essential medicines list. Only 18% of antibiotics were prescribed with their generic names. Conclusion: The prevalence of antibiotic prescription in primary healthcare settings in Prishtina is moderately low. These data cannot be extrapolated to other municipalities in Kosovo or other countries due to different organizational levels. High antibiotic prescription rates for young age groups, prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics, and high rates of parenteral antibiotics were identified as targets for quality improvement.

Abstract

Dealing with threats and real risks to cybersecurity that are produced by cybercrime necessarily imposes the construction of a strategic approach at the national and cross-national levels. Despite the fact that Kosovo has built strategies for dealing with cybersecurity, there is still no accurate data regarding the ability of institutional mechanisms to respond in a proportional and effective manner to cybersecurity threats posed by cybercrime. This paper highlights the strategic treatment of cybersecurity and cybercrime, namely the strategic objectives and activities for their fulfillment, as well as critically analyzing the legal rules that are applied in the context of preventing and fighting cybercrime, focusing on the role, responsibilities, and functions of law enforcement agencies for preventing and fighting cybercrime. This paper also analyzes the strategic objectives and the action plan envisaged by the National Cybersecurity Strategy 2023-2027, which for the first time gives special importance to the inclusion of the private sector in the national network to protect against cyber attacks. The importance of the standards of the Budapest Convention is also addressed, and an assessment is made regarding the extent of the inclusion of these standards by the state of Kosovo.

22. Types of Mathematical Tasks Used in Secondary Classroom Instruction

Abstract

This study examined the quality and types of mathematical tasks used for classroom instruction in an upper secondary school -- gymnasium. All the mathematical tasks presented in nine different school classrooms during the first semester of the school year 2018/2019 were analysed against a 5D analytical framework. The dimensions of the individual task analysis were contextual features; the answer forms required; forms of presentation; types of required mathematical activity and cognitive demands involved. Performed analysis gived perspective on the learning opportunities offered in classroom instruction for building mathematical competencies specified in the current state education curriculum. The results indicate that the selection of tasks was not in accordance with the curriculum requirements. Mostly, teachers used close-ended, non-applicative, lower-level cognitive tasks presented in symbolic form, promoting operations and calculations as a central activity. These types of tasks are usually associated with knowledge and skills of lower orders. In this case, classroom instruction had low potential and very little room left to build a significant portion of competencies and learning outcomes of higher orders.

Abstract

Achieving the quantum noise targets of third-generation detectors will require 10 dB of squeezed-light enhancement as well as megawatt laser power in the interferometer arms - both of which require unprecedented control of the internal optical losses. In this work, we present a novel optimization approach to gravitational-wave detector design aimed at maximizing the robustness to common, yet unavoidable, optical fabrication and installation errors, which have caused significant loss in Advanced LIGO. As a proof of concept, we employ these techniques to perform a two-part optimization of the LIGO A+ design. First, we optimize the arm cavities for reduced scattering loss in the presence of point absorbers, as currently limit the operating power of Advanced LIGO. Then, we optimize the signal recycling cavity for maximum squeezing performance, accounting for realistic errors in the positions and radii of curvature of the optics. Our findings suggest that these techniques can be leveraged to achieve substantially greater quantum noise performance in current and future gravitational-wave detectors., Comment: Matches version accepted in PRD

Abstract

Research in point cloud analysis with deep neural networks has made rapid progress in recent years. The pioneering work PointNet offered a direct analysis of point clouds. However, due to its architecture PointNet is not able to capture local structures. To overcome this drawback, the same authors have developed PointNet++ by applying PointNet to local areas. The local areas are defined by center points and their neighbors. In PointNet++ and its further developments the center points are determined with a Farthest Point Sampling (FPS) algorithm. This has the disadvantage that the center points in general do not have meaningful local areas. In this paper, we introduce the neural Local-Area-Learning Network (LocAL-Net) which places emphasis on the selection and characterization of the local areas. Our approach learns critical points that we use as center points. In order to strengthen the recognition of local structures, the points are given additional metric properties depending on the local areas. Finally, we derive and combine two global feature vectors, one from the whole point cloud and one from all local areas. Experiments on the datasets ModelNet10/40 and ShapeNet show that LocAL-Net is competitive for part segmentation. For classification LocAL-Net outperforms the state-of-the-arts.

In the context of a new democracy, the success of Kosovo university students is crucial to improving the material conditions and long-term stability of the youth in the country. Using the burgeoning data infrastructure from the public higher education sector, this analysis utilizes a sample of 67,618 to examine college student persistence and degree completion from 32 faculties. Findings demonstrate that persistence and completion are highly gendered phenomena, and that completion is largely dependent on a student's major field of study.

Background. Because of side effects, adherence to the treatment with β interferons in multiple sclerosis (MS) is low, leading to decreased treatment efficacy. This can be challenging, especially in healthcare systems where these medications are the only therapeutic option for the treatment of MS. Materials and Methods. The number of missed doses was calculated as a difference between the number of doses a patient had to withdraw from the treatment start to the cut-off date and the real number of doses taken from the MS unit. ABSTRACTAlthough mindfulness is effective in reducing anxiety, research on its impact on test anxiety among lower secondary school children in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related disciplines is limited. Using a one-group pre – post-test research design, this pilot study evaluated the impact of classroom mindfulness meditation training on test anxiety in STEM-related disciplines with 197 sixth-grade students (54.3% boys, aged 10–12 years) from public schools in Kosovo. Mindfulness training significantly decreased students’ test anxiety levels in STEM-related disciplines. Mindfulness helped students calm down, reduced their academic anxiety, and increased their self-esteem. A significant decrease in test anxiety among participants who reported that the training improved their self-esteem and reduced their academic anxiety and stress was ascertained. Regarding sex differences, meditation activities significantly decreased test anxiety scores among girls. Mindfulness training can be employed as a stress-reduction strategy that can be easily incorporated into classroom pedagogy.

Abstract

The increasing human population and the changing climate, which have given rise to frequent drought spells, pose a serious threat to global food security, while identification of high-yielding drought-tolerant genotypes coupled with nutrient management remains a proficient approach to cope with these challenges. An increase in seasonal temperature, recurring drought stress, and elevated atmospheric CO2 are alarmingly affecting durum wheat production, productivity, grain quality, and the human systems it supports. An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide can improve wheat grain yield in a certain amount, but the right amount of nutrients, water, and other required conditions should be met to realize this benefit. Nutrients including nitrogen, silicon, and sulfur supply could alleviate the adverse effects of abiotic stress by enhancing antioxidant defense and improving nitrogen assimilation, although the effects on plant tolerance to drought stress varied with nitrogen ionic forms. The application of sewage sludge to durum wheat also positively impacts its drought stress tolerance by triggering high accumulation of osmoregulators, improving water retention capacity in the soil, and promoting root growth. These beneficial effect of nutrients contribute to durum wheat ability to withstand and recover from abiotic stress conditions, ultimately enhance its productivity and resilience. While these nutrients can provide benefits when applied in appropriate amounts, their excessive use can lead to adverse environmental consequences. Advanced technologies such as precision nutrient management, unmanned aerial vehicle-based spraying, and anaerobic digestion play significant roles in reducing the negative effects associated with nutrients like sewage sludge, zinc, nanoparticles and silicon fertilizers. Hence, nutrient management practices offer significant potential to enhance the caryopsis quality and yield potential of durum wheat. Through implementing tailored nutrient management strategies, farmers, breeders, and agronomists can contribute to sustainable durum wheat production, ensuring food security and maintaining the economic viability of the crop under the changing climatic conditions.

Abstract

Victims of terrorism can be considered a special category within the broader and more general group of “victims of crime”. In recent decades, there has been an international trend to develop more specific treatment, both in legal and practical terms, to address their particular needs in unfortunate times of intensification and sophistication of terrorist attacks, with a correlative increase in the harmful consequences for an increasing number of victims of terrorism. At the international level, one such instrument is the Madrid Memorandum, which contains relevant guidelines that serve as a reference for States, who can draw inspiration from them when designing their national standards of protection and support for victims of terrorism. This paper aims to critically analyze the legal framework applicable in Kosovo on the issue of protection and support of victims of terrorism from the pre-trial phase, through criminal proceedings, and after the completion of criminal proceedings, with special emphasis aiming to analyze the compliance of these rules with standards of the Madrid Memorandum. The paper identifies three areas in which the applicable legal framework for the protection and support of victims of terrorism in criminal proceedings needs to be harmonised with the Madrid Memorandum’s standards.
