Data on the distribution and ecology of cryptobenthic fish of marine caves in the Mediterranean Sea are extremely scarce but necessary for scientists and marine managers alike in order to understand these fish’s ecological role and assess their conservation status. Broadscale surveys by implementing underwater visual census and photographic sampling in marine caves of the northeastern Mediterranean Sea, within different expeditions during the last 5 years, brought to light new records of eight rarely reported cryptobenthic fish species. To a smaller extent, complementary citizen science data from diving professionals of Crete were used to fill distribution gaps. A total of 36 new records (66 individuals) from 18 marine caves and caverns of the Aegean and northeastern Levantine Seas were assembled, belonging to the gobies Corcyrogobius liechtensteini, Didogobius splechtnai, Gammogobius steinitzi, and Thorogobius ephippiatus, the blenny Microlipophrys nigriceps, the tripterygiid Tripterygion melanurum, the speleophilic bythitid Grammonus ater, and the gobiesocid Lepadogaster cf. lepadogaster. The above species have been rarely reported from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, with D. splechtnai and G. steinitzi being recorded for the first and second time from Greek waters, respectively, while L. cf. lepadogaster constitutes the second record of a clingfish species in a marine cave of the Aegean Sea. Interesting behavioral and ecological habits were also noted for some species, based on in situ observations and photographic evidence. Our study contributes to filling gaps in the knowledge of cave fish diversity and demonstrates that cryptobenthic mobile species in understudied cryptic habitats are more common than previously thought in the Mediterranean Sea.

This checklist of the Mediterranean fishes of Israel enumerates 469 species which is an addition of 62 species since the previous checklist of 2005. This new checklist includes 58 Condrichthys and 411 Osteicthys species. Most newly-recorded species are of Red Sea origin (Lessepsian migrants)—38 species, 25 species are from previously poorly investigated habitats, mainly deep water, while two species reached the Mediterranean most likely by ballast water and two are aquaculture escapees. The dramatic increase in the number of Lessepsian migrants (an average of 2.5 species per year) is most likely due to the increased water influx between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, following the recent opening of the new parallel, 72 km, “new canal” and the enlargement of other parts of the Suez Canal.

16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, supplementary data https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dsr.2021.103593, Deep-sea habitats are home for a variety of yet poorly known fish species, some of which display specialized life strategies, as is the case of Bythitidae and Zoarcidae. With the purpose of elucidating biological and ecological aspects of representatives of these families in NW Mediterranean waters, a large dataset based on 599 specimens of Cataetyx alleni, 30 C. laticeps and 284 Melanostigma atlanticum captured during the last 30 years within the framework of different research projects was used to address their geographical and bathymetric distribution, population structure, reproduction, trophic ecology, parasitism and enzymatic markers in the Balearic basin. Present outcomes revealed a patchy distribution mostly for M. atlanticum, possibly related to aggregation during reproduction and to the association with specific sediments. For the three species, higher densities occurred in the mainland vs. the insular margin, and a diminishing trend in estimated densities over the last decades was observed for C. alleni and M. atlanticum likely linked to climatic oscillations. Trophic data indicated that the two Cataetyx species inhabit the water-sediment interface and mainly feed on suprabenthic prey, while M. atlanticum inhabits the water column near the bottom preying on pelagic organisms and moving towards the seabed during reproduction. These results were supported by the parasitological assessment, which revealed that parasite communities were moderately diverse and abundant for Cataetyx spp. while being highly depauperate for M. atlanticum. Present outcomes from the Mediterranean Sea confirmed reproduction of C. alleni during autumn-winter and of M. atlanticum during autumn. Spawning of the former species may occur in winter-spring, as suggested by the finding, by the first time, of two females captured in March with fully-developed embryos inside. Levels of enzymatic markers quantified in muscle were provided for C. alleni and M. atlanticum for the first time. Recently, a barcoding study and a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the Cuban species of the cave-fish genus Lucifuga Poey, 1858 revealed the existence of different evolutionary lineages that were previously unknown or passed unnoticed by morphological scrutiny (i.e., cryptic candidate species). In the present study, Lucifuga gibarensis is described as a new species restricted to anchialine caves in the northeastern karst region of the main island. The species was earlier described as a variety of Lucifuga dentata, but since the name was introduced as a variety after 1960, it is deemed to be infrasubspecific and unavailable according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature Art. 15.2. The new species differs from L. dentata by pigmented eyes vs. eyes absent and lack of palatine teeth vs. present. Lucifuga gibarensis seems to be most similar to the Bahamian species L. lucayana by showing pigmented eyes, 13 or 14 precaudal vertebrae and ten caudal fin rays. However, differs from it by a larger size of the pigmented eye (1.1–1.9 vs. 0.9–1.0% SL) and number of posterior lateral line neuromasts (30–33 vs. 34–35).

Paraphyonus bolini differs from the other species in the genus by the following combination of characters: long rakers on anterior gill arch 11–15, number of pectoral fin rays 13–17, anterior anal fin ray below dorsal fin ray 14–19, dorsal fin origin above vertebra 18–22, precaudal vertebrae 26–30, preanal length 49.5–60 % SL; no black pigmentation laterally in roof of mouth. Size. The largest known specimen (155 mm SL) is a ripe male. Distribution (Fig. 1). The present six specimens were caught off NSW and southern Qld at depths of 3754– 4280 m. The six earlier known specimens are from off Madagascar, South China Sea and off Vanuatu at depths of 1075–1300 m. Remarks. The comparison (Table 1) between the present six specimens and the six earlier known specimens (Nielsen 2015: 332) shows full agreement in all meristic characters. In morphometric characters there is a variation in preanal length, base of pelvic fin to anal fin and head length and furthermore, the Australian specimens occur deeper than the non-Australian specimens (3754–4280 m vs 1075–1300 m). However, we do not consider the differences enough to justify establishing of a new species. Nielsen (2015: 332) considered a specimen as tentatively identified to P. bolini based on differences in number of vertebrae and rays in dorsal and anal fins. Paraphyonus rassi differs from the other species of the genus by the black pigmentation laterally in the roof of the mouth distinctly visible externally and only 3–4 developed rakers on the anterior gill arch. Size. Largest known specimen (109 mm SL) is a ripe female with eggs ca. 1 mm in diameter. Distribution (Fig. 1). Known from four specimens in the West Atlantic (2610–4400 m), from two in the East Atlantic (4415 m) and now from four specimens off NSW and southern Qld (3980–4280 m). Remarks. The comparison in Table 1 between the present four specimens and the six earlier known specimens all from the Atlantic Ocean (Nielsen 2015) shows close agreement between the specimens from the two areas. One of the six specimens was originally tentatively identified as P. rassi due to differences in number of rays in dorsal and anal fins, number of vertebrae and length between base of pelvic fins and anal fin. During voyages in 2017 off southern and southeastern Australia, the Australian Research Vessel Investigator deployed a series of demersal beam trawls to depths of around 5000 metres. Nineteen specimens of the rarely caught aphyonid-clade of the ophidiiform family Bythitidae, representing five species, were caught. Four of these are new to Australian waters: Barathronus pacificus Nielsen and Eagle, 1974 known from the northeastern and southwestern Pacific Ocean, Paraphyonus bolini (Nielsen, 1974) known from the western Indian and western Pacific Oceans, Paraphyonus rassi (Nielsen, 1975) known from the Atlantic Ocean and Sciadonus pedicellaris Garman, 1899, known from the northeastern Atlantic and northeastern and southwestern Pacific Oceans. Also included are Aphyonus gelatinosus Günther, 1878 known from all oceans including ten specimens from Australian waters, Barathronus maculatus Shcherbachev, 1976 known from South Africa to the westernmost Pacific including 13 specimens from Australian waters, Sciadonus longiventralis Nielsen, 2018 known from the holotype collected off New South Wales and finally Barathronus algrahami n. sp. known from the holotype caught off South Australia and four paratypes from off Taiwan and northern Philippines. Close examination of specimens collected during recent voyages combined with recent and ongoing studies by the first author and DNA COI barcoding analysis enabled an assessment of the aphyonid-clade species hitherto recorded from Australian waters. An identification key to the eight aphyonid clade species known from Australian waters is provided.

We studied fish otoliths from twelve sediment samples of a well-preserved late Pliocene to early Pleistocene fauna originally from the northwest Philippines that were originally deposited in relatively deepwater marine environment. The fish fauna is systematically described, its paleoenvironmental character is explored, and its diversity is analyzed. Four unknown species have been encountered: Parascombrops schwarzhansi n. sp., Maurolicus sp., Pteropsaron sp., and Priolepis sp., of which one is described as new species and three were left in open nomenclature as their local recent counterparts are not well known yet. In addition, a variant Benthosema, Benthosema aff. fibulatum, is described. Overall, fifty-three taxa of fish otoliths were found, of which eighteen were identified at the species level and an additional twenty-seven at the genus level. Most extant species nowadays occur around the Philippines in relatively deep water (about 200 m depth), which is congruent with earlier studies on mollusks and echinoderms from the same deposits. This is the first study on a fossil fish otolith assemblage from the Philippines. Its diversity is very high and analysis by rarefaction curves suggests that additional sampling would add more fish species to the presented fauna list.

Saccogaster sp. (Figures 72���73) Material: 3 specimens in total. Anda1 (1) RGM 962240; Anda2 (1) RGM 962241; Anda4 (1) RGM 962242. One adult, one juvenile, and one eroded otolith are available. The adult specimen has an elliptical to fusiform shape (OL:OH=2.00), while the younger one has a regular oval shape (OL:OH=1.72). In the adult specimen the dorsal rim has very obtuse pre- and postdorsal angles, while the ventral rim is regularly rounded; the posterior part is slightly protruded. The rims are smooth. The inner and outer surfaces are convex. A small centrally localized oval sulcus is oriented with its length axis along the length axis of the otoliths; it is covered by a single elevated colliculum. The sulcus is connected to the anterior tip of the otoliths by a collicular crest. A slight dorsal depression is visible, while the ventral field is convex. The outer surface is smooth and particularly in dorsoventral direction strongly convex. The transition from outer to inner side is sharp. The inner side is slightly convex, almost flat. The outline and particular shape, size, and orientation of the sulcus are characteristic for the genera Cataetyx, Grammonus and Saccogaster. The equal-sized dorsal and ventral fields, the sulcus and the thin ridge between the sulcus and anterior point identify the specimens as Saccogaster, but on the basis of the two specimens a species identification seems premature to us. The current checklist provides for each species of the Red Sea its records in the Gulf of Suez, Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea main basin and its general distribution.This new checklist of Red Sea fishes enumerates 1207 species, representing 164 families. Of these, 797 species were recorded from the Gulf of Aqaba and 339 from the Gulf of Suez. The number of species from the Gulf of Suez is evidently lower than the actual number not including 27 Lessepsian (Red Sea) migrants to the Mediterranean that most likely occur in the Gulf. The current list includes 73 species that were newly described for science since the last checklist of 2010. The most specious Osteichthyes families are: Gobiidae (134 species), Labridae (66), Apogonidae (59), Serranidae (including Anthiadinae) (44), Blenniidae (42), Carangidae (38), Muraenidae (36), Pomacentridae (35), Syngnathidae (34), Scorpaenidae (24) and Lutjanidae (23). Among the families of Chondrichthyes, the most specious families are the Carcharhinidae (18 species) and Dasyatidae (11). The total number of endemic species in the Red Sea is 174 species, of these, 34 species are endemic to the Gulf of Aqaba and 8 to the Gulf of Suez.

Bythitidae indet. These otoliths have a shorter, higher and thicker shape than those of typical slender and elongate Tortonian Grammonus bassolii (Nolf, 1980) (see Fig. 9H). Their features only suggest bythitid otoliths, which in most cases possess generalised characteristics such as an elliptic outline with an elliptical sulcus. The Tortonian fish otoliths of northern Italy have been studied for more than a century and represent one of the best known otolith-based teleost faunas in the Miocene of the Mediterranean Basin. Yet with the growing knowledge on Recent otoliths, an updated taxonomic overview of this fauna is needed. Moreover, new material from hemipelagic Tortonian marls sampled at nine localities is described herein, revealing 109 taxa of which 88 are recognised at species level. Four of these are new: Coryphaenoides biobtusus sp. nov., “Merluccius” rattazzii sp. nov., Neobythites auriculatus sp.nov. and Lesueurigobius stironensis sp. nov. The compilation of previously studied and newly acquired material revealed a total of 118 nominal Tortonian species. At generic level, the fauna is characterised by many modern forms; more than 90% can be assigned to present day genera. At species level, however, more than half of the represented taxa are extinct. Based on the fossil otolith record, the Tortonian fauna of the Mediterranean is most similar to that of the Langhian (Badenian) of the Central Paratethys by sharing many extinct Miocene species, but it is also very close to that of the Pliocene Mediterranean, by sharing many modern Atlantic-Mediterranean forms. The Tortonian fauna is further characterised by many species that are apparently confined to the upper Miocene, resulting in a unique combination of its taxonomic composition.

A commented checklist containing 139 species of marine fishes recorded at the Galician Bank seamount is presented. The list is based on nine prospecting and research surveys carried out from 1980 to 2011 with different fishing gears. The ichthyofauna list is diversified in 2 superclasses, 3 classes, 20 orders, 62 families and 113 genera. The largest family is Macrouridae, with 9 species, followed by Moridae, Stomiidae and Sternoptychidae with 7 species each. The trachichthyd Hoplostethus mediterraneus and the morid Lepidion lepidion were the most abundant species. Biogeographically, the Atlantic group, with 113 species (81.3%) is the best represented, followed by the Lusitanian one with 17 species (12.2%). Data on species abundance, as number of individuals caught, size and depth are reported. Habitat, distribution and vulnerability status are commented. Moreover, biometric data and meristic counts are also reported for several species.
