1. Analysis of Short Lever-Press Durations in Rats Responding Under a Fixed-Duration Schedule

Abstract

When reinforcement schedules demand that rats depress a lever for a minimum period of time, most lever presses will meet reinforcer requirements, but others will be much shorter. This results in a bimodal distribution of lever-press durations, with one peak near the reinforced duration value, and a smaller peak at less than 1 s. We conducted an experimental and descriptive analysis of short-duration presses in rats responding under a schedule that delivered edible reinforcers for 10 s of lever depression. All rats emitted biting and idiosyncratic behavior that may have both added and subtracted to the downward force necessary to maintain lever depression for extended periods. Movement of the response levers due to vigorous biting and sniffing, as well as premature hopper entries were both responsible for response durations that fell short of reinforcer requirements. Maintenance of long lever-press durations during fixed-time schedules in two out of three rats suggested that timing failure was unlikely a factor underlying bimodal distributions of response durations. Abstract

In 2 experiments, we investigated the utility of a progressive-duration schedule as an assay for measuring drag effects. In both experiments, rats responded on a schedule of reinforcement in which food delivery was contingent upon response duration. Response requirements increased after each reinforcer delivery in a fashion similar to that of progressive-ratio schedules. Naloxone (1.0, 3.0, and 10.0 mg/kg) produced dose-dependent decreases in breaking points, a finding consistent with those of previous studies demonstrating that opioid antagonists may reduce the reinforcing efficacy of highly palatable foods in sated organisms. In a second experiment, caffeine (3.0, 6.25, and 12.5 mg/kg) sometimes produced increases in breaking points but reduced efficiency by increasing the proportions of lever presses that were too short to satisfy reinforcer requirements. Food deprivation had similar effects. The progressive-duration schedule shows promise as an assay sensitive to motivational aspects of behavior; however, distinguishing the rate-altering effects of drugs from their effects on motivating operations may pose interpretation challenges. 6. Acquisition and Maintenance of Lever Pressing with Prolonged Exposure to Delayed Reinforcement

Abstract

The present study investigated acquisition and extinction of free-operant responding when rats' lever presses produced sucrose pellets after resetting delays of 10 or 20 s. Presses on a second lever cancelled any scheduled food deliveries. Although previous research using 60-s delays failed to demonstrate maintenance of responding across repeated sessions, current findings show that lever pressing can be acquired and maintained with resetting delays. This was demonstrated by both (a) an increase in lever pressing across sessions, and (b) an increase across sessions in the proportion of responding emitted on the lever that produced reinforcement. In addition, responding decreased quickly and substantially when extinction was implemented. This investigation extends previous research showing rats can acquire lever pressing under the resetting/cancellation conditions, and provides evidence that the ability of delayed reinforcers to strengthen responding is a robust phenomenon.

10. Using WLCG data management software to support other communities

Abstract

When the LHC started data taking in 2009 the data rates were unprecedented for the time and forced the WLCG community develop a range of tools for managing their data across many different sites. A decade later other science communities are finding their data requirements have grown far beyond what they can easily manage and are looking for help. The RAL Tier-1's primary mission has always been to provide resources for the LHC experiments although 10% is set aside for non-LHC experiments. In the last 2 years the Tier-1 has received additional funding to support other scientific communities and now provides over 5 PB disk and 13PB Tape storage to them. RAL has run an FTS service for the LHC experiments for several years. Smaller scientific communities have used this for moving large volumes of data between sites but have frequently reported difficulties. In the past RAL also provided an LFC service for managing files stored on the Grid. The RAL Tier-1 should provide a complete data management solution for these communities and it was therefore decided to setup a Rucio instance to do this. In April 2018 a Rucio instance was setup at RAL which has so far been used by the AENEAS project. RAL is providing the development effort to allow a single Rucio instance to support multiple experiments. RAL also runs a DynaFed service which is providing an authentication and authorization layer in front of RAL S3 storage service.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted on response acquisition with delayed reinforcement by exposing water-depraved experimentally naive rats to resetting delay procedures of 8, 16, 32 or 64 seconds. A reinforcement lever, which would produce water after specified delays, a no-consequence lever and a cancellation lever, which cancels the delivery of water, were used. Some rats had a reinforcement and a no-consequence lever while others had a reinforcement and a cancellation lever. Rats that experienced reinforcement showed more responses to the reinforcement lever than those that did not.

Abstract

Response acquisition is seen under immediate and delayed reinforcement procedures, and at all doses of d-amphetamine in rats. Operative-lever pressing increases or remains unaltered in the presence of a low dose of d-amphetamine. Higher doses generate an initial decrease in lever pressing. In the absence of d-amphetamine, responding occurs on the operative lever at immediate reinforcement. Doses of d-amphetamine fail to have a detrimental effect on the process of learning.

Abstract

We investigated the duration of lever pressing by rats when the delivery of appetitive reinforcers was contingent upon response duration. In the first experiment, response durations increased when duration requirements were imposed, and they decreased when duration requirements were removed. This effect occurred whether reinforcers were immediate or delayed by 8 s. In order to maintain the integrity of the delay intervals, reinforcer delivery was dependent upon both lever depression and release. In a second experiment, lever depression only and a response duration of at least 4 s were required for reinforcer delivery. Compared to immediate reinforcement conditions, delayed reinforcers increased both variability and the length of the maximum response durations. In a third experiment, immediate reinforcers were delivered contingent upon lever depression and release under a variety of duration requirements. Median lever‐press durations tracked the contingencies rapidly. Across all three experiments, rats emitted numerous response durations that were too short to satisfy the reinforcer requirements, and bimodal distributions similar to those produced by differential reinforcement of low rate schedules were evident for most rats. In many aspects, response duration responds to reinforcement parameters in a fashion similar to rate of discrete responding, but an examination of this continuous dimension of behavior may provide additional information about environment–behavior relationships. Abstract

With the ever-increasing diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, methylphenidate has become readily accessible in the college environment. Several properties of methylphenidate indicate abuse liability. A survey regarding the recreational use of methylphenidate was distributed to the student body at a public, liberal arts college. More than 16% of the students reported they had tried methylphenidate recreationally, and 12.7% reported they had taken the drug intranasally. Use of the drug was more common among traditional students than among nontraditional students. Among traditional-age students, reports of methylphenidate use were roughly equivalent to reports of cocaine and amphetamine use. Environmental conditions characteristic of college student life may influence the recreational use of the drug.
