Abstract

Intermediate-Luminosity Red Transients (ILRTs) are a class of observed transient posited to arise from the production of an electron-capture supernova from a super-asymptotic giant branch star within a dusty cocoon. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of narrow Na I D absorption as a means of probing the circumstellar environment of these events. We find a wide diversity of evolution in ILRTs in terms of line strength, time-scale, and shape. We present a simple toy model designed to predict this evolution as arising from ejecta from a central supernova passing through a circumstellar environment wherein Na II is recombining to Na I over time. We find that while our toy model can qualitatively explain the evolution of a number of ILRTs, the majority of our sample undergoes evolution more complex than predicted. The success of using the Na I D doublet as a diagnostic tool for studying circumstellar material will rely on the availability of regular high-resolution spectral observations of multiple ILRTs, and more detailed spectral modelling will be required to produce models capable of explaining the diverse range of behaviours exhibited by ILRTs. In addition, the strength of the Na I D absorption feature has been used as a means of estimating the extinction of sources, and we suggest that the variability visible in ILRTs would prevent such methods from being used for this class of transient, and any others showing evidence of variability, Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract

The absence of Type IIP core-collapse supernovae arising from progenitors above 17 solar masses suggests the existence of another evolutionary path by which massive stars end their lives. The direct collapse of a stellar core to a black hole without the production of a bright, explosive transient is expected to produce a long-lived, dim, red transient known as a failed supernova. Despite the detection of a number of candidates for disappearing massive stars in recent years, conclusive observational evidence for failed supernovae remains elusive. A custom-built pipeline designed for the detection of faint transients is used to re-analyse 10 years of observations of 231 nearby galaxies from the PTF/ZTF surveys. This analysis recovers known supernovae, and yields a number of interesting transients. However, none of these are consistent with a failed supernova. Through Monte Carlo tests the recovery efficiency of our pipeline is quantified. By assuming failed supernovae occur as a Poissonian process with zero detections in the data set, 95 per cent upper limits to the rate of failed supernovae are calculated as a function of failed supernova absolute magnitude. We estimate failed supernovae to be less than 0.61, 0.33, 0.26, or 0.23 of the core-collapse SN rate for absolute magnitudes of $-11$, $-12$, $-13$, and $-14$ respectively. Finally, we show that if they exist, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will find 1.7 - 3.7 failed SNe per year for an absolute bolometric luminosity of $\sim 6 \times 10^{39} \textrm{ erg s}^{-1}$ out to distances of 33 - 43 Mpc, depending on their assumed spectral energy distribution., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, submitted to MNRAS

9. Online Indigenous University Student Supports, Barriers, and Learning Preferences

Abstract

The research goals were to identify the key supports, barriers, and learning preferences related to the persistence of online Indigenous university students. Two Indigenous community meetings were held, 212 online Indigenous students were surveyed, 20 Indigenous students were interviewed, and a talking circle was held with six Indigenous university online students. The strongest converging factors related to persistence were: (1) cultural; recommendations for more Indigenous faculty and culture on campus; (2) social; good relationships with faculty and students, positive social environment, time management, and motivation; (3) cognitive; literacy, mathematics, and computer skills; and (4) physical; financial support, affordable housing, family support, and non-academic support at university. Students preferred embedded media, graphics, virtual environments, and games over other online design elements. Email was the preferred method to communicate with faculty. Texting, using social media, and virtual environments were preferred to communicate with other students. Most students had extensive experience with texting, Facebook, and chat, but far less experience with blogs, Twitter, or Wikis. Students liked group work but assigning one mark for group projects worked against social cohesion. Most students reported having the skills needed to complete online courses, with the exception of time management. The findings support a wholistic Indigenous human model of university persistence that includes intersecting social, cognitive, physical, and cultural components.

Abstract

Effective data management plays a key role in oceanographic research as cruise-based data, collected from different laboratories and expeditions, are commonly compiled to investigate regional to global oceanographic processes. Here we describe new and updated best practice data standards for discrete chemical oceanographic observations, specifically those dealing with column header abbreviations, quality control flags, missing value indicators, and standardized calculation of certain properties. These data standards have been developed with the goals of improving the current practices of the scientific community and promoting their international usage. These guidelines are intended to standardize data files for data sharing and submission into permanent archives. They will facilitate future quality control and synthesis efforts and lead to better data interpretation. In turn, this will promote research in ocean biogeochemistry, such as studies of carbon cycling and ocean acidification, on regional to global scales. These best practice standards are not mandatory. Agencies, institutes, universities, or research vessels can continue using different data standards if it is important for them to maintain historical consistency. However, it is hoped that they will be adopted as widely as possible to facilitate consistency and to achieve the goals stated above.

13. Understanding the performance of 11-12 wt. % Cr creep strength enhanced ferritic steels, through microstructural characterisation and investigation of precipitate quantification techniques

Abstract

To improve power generation efficiencies, offset carbon capture and storage efficiency penalties, and reduce CO2 emissions, the steam temperatures and pressures within boilers and heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) must increase. This demands new or optimised materials, capable of withstanding long-term operation within increasingly aggressive environments, whilst being affordable, inspectable, repairable, and manageable in service. The development of a family of 9-12 wt. % Cr creep strength enhanced ferritic (CSEF) steels aims to meet such demands, through the consideration of creep strength, thermal fatigue, corrosion and steam oxidation resistance, manufacturability, weldability, and cost. Two 11-12 wt. % Cr CSEF steels, VM12-SHC and Thor® 115, are candidates for boiler and HRSG tubing and piping applications at such conditions. Their increased Cr addition is designed to improve steam oxidation resistance compared to mainstay 9-10 wt. % Cr steels, for which this is a life-limiting property at steam conditions approaching, or above, 600°C. Modelling and characterisation studies of samples aged at service-like conditions, are critical to assessing the effectiveness and safety of Thor® 115 or VM12-SHC in application. However, very few independent studies currently exist. Additionally, a range of characterisation techniques and experimental procedures are used throughout literature, with limited investigation to justify their selection. Consequently, through thermodynamic equilibrium modelling and microstructural characterisation of a range of service-like exposed and simulated heat affected zone (HAZ) samples, this thesis aims to improve our understanding of the performance of these steels, during service and welding procedures. Additionally, as any improvements to characterisation techniques and procedures will contribute towards achieving a better understanding of long-term material performance, these are investigated in order to recommend best practice. Ultimately, this thesis contributes to knowledge in five key areas; precipitate quantification procedures, microscopy techniques, materials modelling, materials characterisation, and welding; with a focus on Thor® 115 and VM12-SHC steels throughout. Firstly, Laves phase and M23C6 carbide imaging and quantification procedures are investigated from respective scanning electron microscope (SEM) backscattered electron detector (BED) and focused ion beam (FIB) imaging, respectively. Setting selections for the best compromises between statistical representativity of the bulk, minimising noise influences, and improving accuracy of results are studied and discussed. Amongst other things, this led to recommendations of 75 nm (2 pixel (px)) minimum particle equivalent circular diameter (ECD) and 48 µm horizontal field width (HFW), and 37.5 nm (3 px) minimum ECD and 12.8 µm HFW, for Laves phase and M23C6 carbide quantification, respectively. In addition, with these settings, the number of images per analysis location required to return acceptably low uncertainties on mean measured precipitate values was investigated. From this, at least 15 images (corresponding ≈ 250 µm2¬¬ total area of analysed Laves phase particles and ≈ 5,000 M¬23C6 carbides in service-like aged and as-tempered 11-12 wt. % Cr steel, respectively) are required per analysis location. This investigation contributes towards a longer-term industry led initiative to standardise procedures, given a material type and state. Secondly, a novel microscopy technique for quantifying precipitates, which was discovered as part of this research, is discussed and compared to FIB imaging techniques. The novel field emission SEM (FESEM) in-column upper secondary electron detector (USD) technique returns images from first order secondary electrons (SE1s), which enables imaging and separate quantification of M23C6 and Z-phase from a single micrograph. The advantages and pitfalls of this novel technique are highlighted and future optimisation work to enable the quantification of M23C6, Laves phase, and Z-phase from a single microscope and image, is outlined. Such a development would significantly reduce the time and costs associated with research to make it far more accessible, whilst providing a pathway towards automated larger area mapping, which could lead to significant advances in materials research. Thirdly, for both materials, the major phase transformations and temperatures, stable secondary phases, their compositions, and their sensitivity to compositional and temperature variation, are predicted via thermodynamic equilibrium modelling throughout service, tempering, and normalisation temperature ranges. The amounts of major stable secondary phases; M23C6 and modified (Cr,Fe)(V,Nb)N Z-phase in both steels, M2N in Thor® 115, and W-rich Laves phase in VM12-SHC at service temperatures, with V-rich and Nb-rich MX at normalisation temperatures; are predicted and their influences are discussed. Key control elements for phase amounts, such as C in M23C6 or Nb, N, and V in modified Z-phase, and their likely influences on material performance during service are also discussed. With most of this work being unpublished, it improves current understanding of the expected microstructural influences within both materials. Fourthly, via application of micro-hardness analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) mapping, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM, and FIB imaging; the grain structure, precipitate populations, and chemical distributions are characterised and compared across a range of as-tempered, service-like thermally aged, and creep strained Thor® 115 and VM12-SHC samples. This shows both materials to exhibit tempered martensitic microstructures, strengthened by fine M23C6 carbide distributions along grain boundaries. The influence of thermal ageing, which severely coarsens precipitates and decreases hardness with increasing time and temperature, is then analysed and discussed. By comparing similar characterisation results to true strain and reduction in area across creep tested gauges, a quantitative assessment of creep failure processes is provided. This work highlights that a critical point relating to strain exists in both materials, above which carbides coarsen, damage instigates, recrystallisation occurs, and hardness decreases, leading to failure. This therefore enables industry to better understand the key processes which lead to failure, thus improving their ability to prevent in-service failures. Further material characterisation and additional work to identify the measured values (i.e. reduction in area and strain) at this critical point in real time, would improve the management of these materials during service and return a fuller understanding of their performance. Lastly, the HAZ microstructure in Thor® 115 and VM12-SHC steel has yet to be comprehensively characterised, before or after post weld heat treatment (PWHT). Therefore, well controlled simulated HAZ thermal cycles were instrumented with dilatometry to determine the austenite transformation temperatures, Ac1 and Ac3. Following simulated HAZ welding thermal cycles, four PWHT conditions were applied in the allowable PWHT range (740°C to 780°C for 1 or 3 hours) to Thor® 115 and the specified PWHT (770°C/0.5 h) was applied to VM12-SHC. All resultant samples were microstructurally characterised using hardness, EBSD, and FIB imaging, with prior publications utilised to compare the HAZ sub-zones. The HAZ in Thor® 115 and VM12-SHC was thus classified for a simulated single weld thermal cycle into three distinct regions, based on the observed prior austenite and sub-grain structure and dissolution of precipitates. The three regions included; 1) the completely transformed zone (CTZ), 2) the partially transformed zone (PTZ), and 3) the over tempered zone (OTZ). A new definition for the PTZ is highlighted to accommodate 'high temperature' and 'low temperature' transition zones which are not bound by Ac1 or Ac3. The characteristics of each pre- and post-PWHT region are described, providing more clarity on the classification of the HAZ for 11-12 wt. % Cr CSEF steels. This should lead to further work to compare the simulated HAZ with real-world, creep tested HAZ microstructures.

Abstract

Background: The performance of an everolimus-eluting bioresorbable scaffold (BRS) was inferior to an everolimus-eluting metallic drug-eluting stent (DES) with permanent polymer, mainly due the mechanical features of BRS technology. The performance of BRS as compared to metallic DES with bioresorbable polymers remains unstudied. Methods: This prospective, randomized, multicenter, clinical trial enrolled patients who underwent coronary stenting for de novo coronary lesions. Patients were randomly assigned to bioresorbable polymer everolimus-eluting stents (BP-EES) or everolimus-eluting BRS. The primary endpoint was percentage diameter stenosis (in-device) at 6- to 8-month angiographic surveillance. The main secondary endpoint was the device-oriented composite endpoint (DOCE) of cardiac death/target vessel-myocardial infarction/target lesion revascularization assessed after 12 months and 5 years. Results: The trial was prematurely terminated after the enrollment of 117 of 230 patients (BP-EES, n = 60; BRS, n = 57) due to safety issues associated with BRS technology. The primary endpoint of in-device diameter stenosis at angiographic surveillance was 12.5 ± 7.7% with BP-EES versus 19.3 ± 16.5% with BRS (p = 0.01). The DOCE occurred in 5.0% in the BP-EES group versus 12.3% of patients in the BRS group (hazard ratio [HR] 2.48, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.64–9.58, p = 0.19) after 12 months and in 11.7% in the BP-EES group versus 26.4% of patients in the BRS group (HR 2.38, 95% CI 0.97–5.84, p = 0.06) after 5 years. Conclusions: BP-EES showed superior mid-term angiographic performance compared with BRS. Clinical event rates did not differ significantly between the groups up to 5 years of follow-up. Abstract

Percutaneous active mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices are being increasingly used in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock (AMICS) despite conflicting evidence regarding their effect on mortality. We aimed to ascertain the effect of early routine active percutaneous MCS versus control treatment on 6-month all-cause mortality in patients with AMICS.

Abstract

The ocean carbonate system is critical to monitor because it plays a major role in regulating Earth's climate and marine ecosystems. It is monitored using a variety of measurements, and it is commonly understood that all components of seawater carbonate chemistry can be calculated when at least two carbonate system variables are measured. However, several recent studies have highlighted systematic discrepancies between calculated and directly measured carbonate chemistry variables and these discrepancies have large implications for efforts to measure and quantify the changing ocean carbon cycle. Given this, the Ocean Carbonate System Intercomparison Forum (OCSIF) was formed as a working group through the Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry program to coordinate and recommend research to quantify and/or reduce uncertainties and disagreements in measurable seawater carbonate system measurements and calculations, identify unknown or overlooked sources of these uncertainties, and provide recommendations for making progress on community efforts despite these uncertainties. With this paper we aim to (1) summarize recent progress toward quantifying and reducing carbonate system uncertainties; (2) advocate for research to further reduce and better quantify carbonate system measurement uncertainties; (3) present a small amount of new data, metadata, and analysis related to uncertainties in carbonate system measurements; and (4) restate and explain the rationales behind several OCSIF recommendations. We focus on open ocean carbonate chemistry, and caution that the considerations we discuss become further complicated in coastal, estuarine, and sedimentary environments

36. Spectrophotometrically derived seawater CO2‐system assessments: Parameter calculations using pH do not require measurements at standard temperatures.

Abstract

The temperature range of Earth's open‐ocean waters is roughly 0–30°C, yet our understanding of the seawater carbon dioxide (CO2) system is largely derived from analyses conducted within a narrow temperature range (e.g., laboratory temperature of 20°C or 25°C). Herein, we address two aspects of open‐ocean CO2‐system measurements and modeling: (1) a highly precise spectrophotometric technique is used to determine bicarbonate dissociation constants (K2) in seawater at temperatures as low as 3°C and (2) a cruise dataset uniquely including total scale pH measurements at two temperatures is used for CO2‐system internal consistency comparisons at 12°C and 25°C. Our pK2 parameterization (where pK = −log K) is applicable for broad ranges of salinity (20 ≤ SP ≤ 40) and temperature (3°C ≤ t ≤ 35°C). Our CO2‐system internal consistency evaluation (comparison of measured and calculated CO2‐system parameters) utilized data obtained during NOAA's 2021 West Coast Ocean Acidification Cruise: total alkalinity (TA), total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), pH measured at 25°C, and pH measured at 12°C (n = 265). Results demonstrate that, relative to calculations utilizing the TA, DIC pair, agreement between measured and calculated parameters is improved when either TA or DIC is paired with pH measurements at either temperature. Calculations of CO2 fugacity (fCO2) and aragonite saturation state (Ωar) using pH measurements made at 25°C or 12°C (paired with either TA or DIC) are statistically indistinguishable. Results also suggest that the temperature dependence of current CO2‐system dissociation constants need further refinement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
