1. Going beyond quantum Markovianity and back to reality: An exact master equation study

Abstract

The precise characterization of dynamics in open quantum systems often presents significant challenges, leading to the introduction of various approximations to simplify a model. One commonly used strategy involves Markovian approximations, assuming a memoryless environment. In this study, such approximations are not used and an analytical dynamical depiction of an open quantum system is provided. The system under consideration is an oscillator that is surrounded by a bath of oscillators. The resulting dynamics are characterized by a second-order complex coefficient linear differential equation, which may be either homogeneous or inhomogeneous. Moreover, distinct dynamical regions emerge, depending on certain parameter values. Notably, the steady-state average excitation number (AEN) of the system shows rapid escalation with increasing non-Markovianity, reflecting the intricacies of real-world dynamics. In cases where there is detuning between the system frequency and the environmental central frequency within a non-Markovian regime, the AEN maintains its initial value for an extended period. Furthermore, the application of pulse control can effectively protect the quantum system from decoherence effects without using approximations. The pulse control can not only prolong the relaxation time of the oscillator, but can also be used to speed up the relaxation process, depending on the specifications of the pulse. By employing a kick pulse, the Mpemba effect can be observed in the non-Markovian regime in a surprisingly super-cooling-like effect.

2. EmbodiedRAG: Dynamic 3D Scene Graph Retrieval for Efficient and Scalable Robot Task Planning

Abstract

Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have helped facilitate exciting progress for robotic planning in real, open-world environments. 3D scene graphs (3DSGs) offer a promising environment representation for grounding such LLM-based planners as they are compact and semantically rich. However, as the robot's environment scales (e.g., number of entities tracked) and the complexity of scene graph information increases (e.g., maintaining more attributes), providing the 3DSG as-is to an LLM-based planner quickly becomes infeasible due to input token count limits and attentional biases present in LLMs. Inspired by the successes of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) methods that retrieve query-relevant document chunks for LLM question and answering, we adapt the paradigm for our embodied domain. Specifically, we propose a 3D scene subgraph retrieval framework, called EmbodiedRAG, that we augment an LLM-based planner with for executing natural language robotic tasks. Notably, our retrieved subgraphs adapt to changes in the environment as well as changes in task-relevancy as the robot executes its plan. We demonstrate EmbodiedRAG's ability to significantly reduce input token counts (by an order of magnitude) and planning time (up to 70% reduction in average time per planning step) while improving success rates on AI2Thor simulated household tasks with a single-arm, mobile manipulator. Additionally, we implement EmbodiedRAG on a quadruped with a manipulator to highlight the performance benefits for robot deployment at the edge in real environments.

3. ConceptAgent: LLM-Driven Precondition Grounding and Tree Search for Robust Task Planning and Execution

Abstract

Robotic planning and execution in open-world environments is a complex problem due to the vast state spaces and high variability of task embodiment. Recent advances in perception algorithms, combined with Large Language Models (LLMs) for planning, offer promising solutions to these challenges, as the common sense reasoning capabilities of LLMs provide a strong heuristic for efficiently searching the action space. However, prior work fails to address the possibility of hallucinations from LLMs, which results in failures to execute the planned actions largely due to logical fallacies at high- or low-levels. To contend with automation failure due to such hallucinations, we introduce ConceptAgent, a natural language-driven robotic platform designed for task execution in unstructured environments. With a focus on scalability and reliability of LLM-based planning in complex state and action spaces, we present innovations designed to limit these shortcomings, including 1) Predicate Grounding to prevent and recover from infeasible actions, and 2) an embodied version of LLM-guided Monte Carlo Tree Search with self reflection. In simulation experiments, ConceptAgent achieved a 19% task completion rate across three room layouts and 30 easy level embodied tasks outperforming other state-of-the-art LLM-driven reasoning baselines that scored 10.26% and 8.11% on the same benchmark. Additionally, ablation studies on moderate to hard embodied tasks revealed a 20% increase in task completion from the baseline agent to the fully enhanced ConceptAgent, highlighting the individual and combined contributions of Predicate Grounding and LLM-guided Tree Search to enable more robust automation in complex state and action spaces.

4. Online Learning Post-COVID: Faculty Caring in the Eyes of University Students

Abstract

The escalation in online learning post-COVID has created a pressing need to consider faculty-student interactions in a virtual environment. A sequential explanatory, mixed-method design was used to investigate university students' perceptions of faculty caring online following the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 46 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in one of four programs offered either fully online or with a significant number of required courses offered in an asynchronous online format at the same university in a single semester. Results from the Student Perspectives of Caring Online Survey indicated participants' feeling strongly about effective communication, specifically a detailed class calendar with a schedule and due dates as well as clear instructions regarding expectations for online communications, as a faculty behavior that conveyed caring. Qualitative data supported this finding and indicated that empathy and support from faculty were also highly valued. Implications of findings for online teaching practices are presented.

5. Storytelling through a Critical Positive Youth Development Framework: A Mixed Methods Approach

Abstract

The benefits of youth voice and meaningful and informed youth participation in social and systemic change initiatives are well-documented (Gonzalez et al., 2020; Gonzalez & Kokozos, 2019; Ginwright & Cammarota, 2007), and storytelling has shown promise as an effective pedagogical tool for nurturing and amplifying youth voices. Inspired by the benefits of youth leadership, the authors collaborated with three university undergraduate students to develop #PassTheMicYouth, a multimedia extension program that aims to amplify the social justice contributions of young people and provide educators with resources that center diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in high school and undergraduate classrooms as well as within youth-serving organizations. The flagship resource is a twenty-lesson curriculum entitled "Amplifying Youth Voices: A Storytelling for Social Change Curriculum," which is informed by the Critical Positive Youth Development (CPYD) framework. This paper first reviews and synthesizes scholarship related to the CPYD framework and storytelling as a pedagogical tool, with specific emphasis on personal storytelling and counternarratives. Quantitative and qualitative findings are then introduced and discussed, and finally the strengths and limitations of the study are reviewed and implications for future research and practice are outlined.

6. The Road Less Travelled: Examining Alternative Routes to Elementary Teacher Preparation in Mathematics

Abstract

Background/purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify strengths and deficits of alternative teacher certification programs, with particular emphasis on approaches to strengthening mathematical content knowledge and pedagogy. Materials/methods: Six participants included both teacher candidates enrolled in internship in the alternative master's elementary or early childhood program and recent graduates of the programs at a university in the southeast United States. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted via an online focus group to elicit conversation among the participants of their combined perceptions of program-level recommendations to better prepare them to teach elementary mathematics. Using inductive, open coding of the transcribed data, the researchers identified and ultimately agreed upon the emerging themes related to perceptions of preparation program components. Results: Related to research question one, participants shared meaningful experiences related to the instructor modeling effective mathematics teaching practices that have impacted their own teaching. Related to research question two, five common themes, including recommendations for improvement, were revealed: Need for more preservice mathematics methods instruction and theory into practice; Preparedness for accommodating diverse needs; Analyzing student data to inform practice; Utilizing and securing available resources; and navigating curricular changes/district mandates. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, teacher candidates in the elementary and early childhood alternative master's programs are in need additional content, pedagogy, and resources to effectively teach elementary mathematics.

Abstract

Although the 2022 European LeukemiaNet (ELN) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) risk classification reliably predicts outcomes in younger patients treated with intensive chemotherapy, it is unclear whether it applies to adults ≥60 years treated with lower-intensity treatment (LIT). We aimed to test the prognostic impact of ELN risk in patients with newly diagnosed (ND) AML aged ≥60 years given LIT and to further refine risk stratification for these patients. A total of 595 patients were included: 11% had favorable-, 11% intermediate-, and 78% had adverse-risk AML. ELN risk was prognostic for overall survival (OS) (P < .001) but did not stratify favorable- from intermediate-risk (P = .71). Within adverse-risk AML, the impact of additional molecular abnormalities was further evaluated. Multivariable analysis was performed on a training set (n = 316) and identified IDH2 mutation as an independent favorable prognostic factor, and KRAS, MLL2, and TP53 mutations as unfavorable (P < .05). A mutation score was calculated for each combination of these mutations, assigning adverse-risk patients to 2 risk groups: -1 to 0 points (Beat-AML intermediate) vs 1+ points (Beat-AML adverse). In the final refined risk classification, ELN favorable- and intermediate-risk were combined into a newly defined Beat-AML favorable-risk group, in addition to mutation scoring within the ELN adverse-risk group. This approach redefines risk for older patients with ND AML and proposes refined Beat-AML risk groups with improved discrimination for OS (2-year OS, 48% vs 33% vs 11%, respectively; P < .001), providing patients and providers additional information for treatment decision-making.

Abstract

PACS (phosphofurin acidic cluster sorting) proteins are known for their roles in sorting cargo proteins to organelles and can physically interact with WD40 repeat-containing protein WDR37. PACS1, PACS2, and WDR37 variants are associated with multisystemic syndromes and neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by intellectual disability, seizures, developmental delays, craniofacial abnormalities, and autism spectrum disorder. However, the functional effects of syndromic variants at the cellular level remain unknown. Here, we report the expression pattern of Caenorhabditis elegans orthologs of PACS and WDR37 and their interaction. We show that cePACS-1 and ceWDR-37 colocalize to somatic cytoplasm of many types of cells and are mutually required for expression, supporting a conclusion that the intermolecular dependence of PACS1/PACS2/PACS-1 and WDR37/WDR-37 is evolutionarily conserved. We further show that editing in PACS1 and PACS2 variants in cePACS-1 changes protein localization in multiple cell types, including neurons. Moreover, expression of human PACS1 can functionally complement C. elegans PACS-1 in neurons, demonstrating conserved functions of the PACS-WDR37 axis in an invertebrate model system. Our findings reveal effects of human variants and suggest potential strategies to identify regulatory network components that may contribute to understanding molecular underpinnings of PACS/WDR37 syndromes.

9. Towards Robust Automation of Surgical Systems via Digital Twin-based Scene Representations from Foundation Models

Abstract

Large language model-based (LLM) agents are emerging as a powerful enabler of robust embodied intelligence due to their capability of planning complex action sequences. Sound planning ability is necessary for robust automation in many task domains, but especially in surgical automation. These agents rely on a highly detailed natural language representation of the scene. Thus, to leverage the emergent capabilities of LLM agents for surgical task planning, developing similarly powerful and robust perception algorithms is necessary to derive a detailed scene representation of the environment from visual input. Previous research has focused primarily on enabling LLM-based task planning while adopting simple yet severely limited perception solutions to meet the needs for bench-top experiments but lack the critical flexibility to scale to less constrained settings. In this work, we propose an alternate perception approach -- a digital twin-based machine perception approach that capitalizes on the convincing performance and out-of-the-box generalization of recent vision foundation models. Integrating our digital twin-based scene representation and LLM agent for planning with the dVRK platform, we develop an embodied intelligence system and evaluate its robustness in performing peg transfer and gauze retrieval tasks. Our approach shows strong task performance and generalizability to varied environment settings. Despite convincing performance, this work is merely a first step towards the integration of digital twin-based scene representations. Future studies are necessary for the realization of a comprehensive digital twin framework to improve the interpretability and generalizability of embodied intelligence in surgery.

10. A+AI: Threats to Society, Remedies, and Governance

Abstract

This document focuses on the threats, especially near-term threats, that Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings to society. Most of the threats discussed here can result from any algorithmic process, not just AI; in addition, defining AI is notoriously difficult. For both reasons, it is important to think of "A+AI": Algorithms and Artificial Intelligence. In addition to the threats, this paper discusses countermeasures to them, and it includes a table showing which countermeasures are likely to mitigate which threats. Thoughtful governance could manage the risks without seriously impeding progress; in fact, chances are it would accelerate progress by reducing the social chaos that would otherwise be likely. The paper lists specific actions government should take as soon as possible, namely: * Require all social media platforms accessible in the U.S. to offer users verification that their accounts are owned by citizens, and to display every account's verification status * Establish regulations to require that all products created or significantly modified with A+AI be clearly labeled as such; to restrict use of generative AI to create likenesses of persons; and to require creators of generative AI software to disclose materials used to train their software and to compensate the creators of any copyrighted material used * Fund a crash project of research on mitigating the threats * Fund educational campaigns to raise awareness of the threats, Comment: 25 pages

12. Certified simultaneous isotopic approximation of curves via subdivision

Abstract

We present a certified algorithm based on subdivision for computing an isotopic approximation to any number of curves in the plane. Our algorithm is based on the certified curve approximation algorithm of Plantinga and Vegter. The main challenge in this algorithm is to correctly and efficiently identify and isolate all intersections between the curves. To overcome this challenge, we introduce a new and simple test that guarantees the global correctness of our output. A main step in our algorithm for approximating any number of curves is to correctly approximate a pair of curves. In addition to developing the details of this special case, we provide complexity analyses for both the number of steps and the bit-complexity of this algorithm using both worst-case bounds as well as those based on continuous amortization., Comment: This paper was intended to be a new version of the paper arXiv:2302.04908

13. Caregiver Predictions of Their 3-to 6-Year-Old Child Who Stutters' Communication Attitude

Abstract

Purpose: Caregivers share critical insight during their child's stuttering evaluation; yet, there have been no empirical studies evaluating whether caregivers provide similar accounts of their 3- to 6-year-old child's communication attitude compared to their child's self-report. This study examined caregiver- and child-reported communication attitude and assessed potential moderators of more comparable caregiver and child ratings (i.e., caregiver confidence, caregiver-child conflict, observer-rated stuttering severity). Method: One hundred thirteen children who stutter ages 3 through 6 years and a primary caregiver were recruited from clinical settings across the United States. Children completed the Communication Attitude Test for Preschool and Kindergarten Children Who Stutter (KiddyCAT) and three speaking samples, which were recorded to assess observer-rated stuttering severity using the Stuttering Severity Instrument--Fourth Edition. Caregivers predicted their child's communication attitude (C-KiddyCAT) and provided a confidence rating for their prediction. Caregivers also rated caregiver-child conflict using the Child-Parent Relationship Scale-Short Form (CPRS-SF). Multiple regression was used to (a) evaluate whether caregiver C-KiddyCAT scores predicted child KiddyCAT scores and (b) assess potential moderators of the relationship between C-KiddyCAT and KiddyCAT scores. Results: Caregiver ratings of their child's communication attitude (C-KiddyCAT) predicted child communication attitude ratings (KiddyCAT). A significant interaction between caregiver-child conflict (CPRS-SF) and caregiver ratings of their child's communication attitude (C-KiddyCAT) suggested caregiver-child conflict changed the underlying relationship between C-KiddyCAT and KiddyCAT scores, such that low conflict resulted in more similar C-KiddyCAT and KiddyCAT scores. Neither caregiver confidence nor observer-rated stuttering severity influenced the relationship between C-KiddyCAT and KiddyCAT scores. Conclusions: Although many caregivers predicted communication attitude ratings that closely aligned with their child's report, some caregiver-child dyads provided divergent ratings. Clinicians should interpret caregiver predictions of their child's communication attitude within the context of their full evaluation and the caregiver-child relationship. Assessing both self-reported communication attitude and caregiver predictions of their child's communication attitude provides a meaningful starting point to counseling caregivers about cognitive components of stuttering for preschool- and kindergarten-age children who stutter.

14. Multi-objective generative AI for designing novel brain-targeting small molecules

Abstract

The strict selectivity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) represents one of the most formidable challenges to successful central nervous system (CNS) drug delivery. Computational methods to generate BBB permeable drugs in silico may be valuable tools in the CNS drug design pipeline. However, in real-world applications, BBB penetration alone is insufficient; rather, after transiting the BBB, molecules must bind to a specific target or receptor in the brain and must also be safe and non-toxic. To discover small molecules that concurrently satisfy these constraints, we use multi-objective generative AI to synthesize drug-like BBB-permeable small molecules. Specifically, we computationally synthesize molecules with predicted binding affinity against dopamine receptor D2, the primary target for many clinically effective antipsychotic drugs. After training several graph neural network-based property predictors, we adapt SyntheMol (Swanson et al., 2024), a recently developed Monte Carlo Tree Search-based algorithm for antibiotic design, to perform a multi-objective guided traversal over an easily synthesizable molecular space. We design a library of 26,581 novel and diverse small molecules containing hits with high predicted BBB permeability and favorable predicted safety and toxicity profiles, and that could readily be synthesized for experimental validation in the wet lab. We also validate top scoring molecules with molecular docking simulation against the D2 receptor and demonstrate predicted binding affinity on par with risperidone, a clinically prescribed D2-targeting antipsychotic. 15. Spiral Galaxies' Disk Dominance and Testing MOND

Abstract

Many Hubble type S galaxies have a flat rotation curve, V extending into the outer disk. The surface brightness there is too low to create V from stars of a reasonable mass-to-light ratio. To maintain a stable disk, a massive dark matter halo is usually assumed to dominate in creating V. Gravitational arm amplification is used here to estimate whether V is created by a disk mixture, or by a 100 percent halo. The disk surface density is not estimated from the disk surface brightness and an assumed mass to light ratio. The observed arm pitch angle is presumed to be long term maximally amplified. This permits calculation of the disk surface mass density with radius relative to a 100 percent disk which would fully create V. NGC 7217's tightly wound 4.8 degree arm pitch angle indicates a disk component contributing 43 percent of the observed V for the range over the spiral arms (important but not dominant). It has too low a disk density to create V with the rest presumably arising from a halo. V is proportional to the square root of surface density. By contrast a loose arm galaxy disk can dominate in creating V. For example NGC 3198's arm pitch angle of 30 degrees implies a disk surface density sufficient to account for 88 percent of V which is a dominant fraction. Little dark matter halo is needed for galaxies like this. Observationally, the dark outer disk may be molecular hydrogen. NGC 3198's dominant disk also provides a counter example to the need for any universal (MOND) force law modification over the outer disk spiral arms.

Abstract

About 40 transneptunian binaries (TNBs) have fully determined orbits with about 10 others being solved except for breaking the mirror ambiguity. Despite decades of study almost all TNBs have only ever been analyzed with a model that assumes perfect Keplerian motion (e.g., two point masses). In reality, all TNB systems are non-Keplerian due to non-spherical shapes, possible presence of undetected system components, and/or solar perturbations. In this work, we focus on identifying candidates for detectable non-Keplerian motion based on sample of 45 well-characterized binaries. We use MultiMoon, a non-Keplerian Bayesian inference tool, to analyze published relative astrometry allowing for non-spherical shapes of each TNB system's primary. We first reproduce the results of previous Keplerian fitting efforts with MultiMoon, which serves as a comparison for the non-Keplerian fits and confirms that these fits are not biased by the assumption of a Keplerian orbit. We unambiguously detect non-Keplerian motion in 8 TNB systems across a range of primary radii, mutual orbit separations, and system masses. As a proof of concept for non-Keplerian fitting, we perform detailed fits for (66652) Borasisi-Pabu, possibly revealing a $J_2 \approx 0.44$, implying Borasisi (and/or Pabu) may be a contact binary or an unresolved compact binary. However, full confirmation of this result will require new observations. Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate useful code, but often the code they generate cannot be trusted to be sound. In this paper, we present VerMCTS, an approach to begin to resolve this issue by generating verified programs in Dafny and Coq. VerMCTS uses a logical verifier in concert with an LLM to guide a modified Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS). This approach leverages the verifier to gain intermediate feedback inside the search algorithm by checking partial programs at each step to estimate an upper bound on the value function. To measure the performance of VerMCTS, we develop a new suite of multi-step verified programming problems in Dafny and Coq. In terms of pass@T, a new metric which computes the pass rate given a budget of T tokens sampled from the LLM, VerMCTS leads to more than a 30% absolute increase in average pass@5000 across the suite over repeated sampling from the base language model. Abstract

Introduction: Phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD) is an uncommon, potentially life-threatening complication of acute deep venous thromboses that requires a timely diagnosis. The name of the condition, the visual diagnostic criteria, and the preponderance of cases in the literature referencing findings exclusively in patients with lighter skin complexions means that PCD may not be on the differential diagnosis for the patient with more melanated skin who is experiencing this time-sensitive vascular emergency.Case Report: We describe one case of PCD in a patient with darker skin complexion and the importance of identifying clinical findings, regardless of skin color, given the paucity of reference images for PCD in darker complected patients. Our literature review yielded 60 case reports for PCD. Only two papers included images referencing patients of color.Conclusion: Accurate diagnosis requires recognition of diagnostic findings, which may vary significantly between phenotypically distinct populations. Many pathognomonic physical exam findings rely on descriptors based on presentation in phenotypically white patients.

Abstract

IntroductionLate-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) has a strong genetic component. Participants in Long-Life Family Study (LLFS) exhibit delayed onset of dementia, offering a unique opportunity to investigate LOAD genetics.MethodsWe conducted a whole genome sequence analysis of 3475 LLFS members. Genetic associations were examined in six independent studies (N = 14,260) with a wide range of LOAD risk. Association analysis in a sub-sample of the LLFS cohort (N = 1739) evaluated the association of LOAD variants with beta amyloid (Aβ) levels.ResultsWe identified several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in tight linkage disequilibrium within the MTUS2 gene associated with LOAD (rs73154407, p = 7.6 × 10-9). Association of MTUS2 variants with LOAD was observed in the five independent studies and was significantly stronger within high levels of Aβ42/40 ratio compared to lower amyloid.DiscussionMTUS2 encodes a microtubule associated protein implicated in the development and function of the nervous system, making it a plausible candidate to investigate LOAD biology.HighlightsLong-Life Family Study (LLFS) families may harbor late onset Alzheimer's dementia (LOAD) variants. LLFS whole genome sequence analysis identified MTUS2 gene variants associated with LOAD. The observed LLFS variants generalized to cohorts with wide range of LOAD risk. The association of MTUS2 with LOAD was stronger within high levels of beta amyloid. Our results provide evidence for MTUS2 gene as a novel LOAD candidate locus.

29. Teacher Engagement and Reflections of Attitudes toward Students, Race, and Self Following STEM Summer Enrichment

Abstract

This article explores critical studies in education by examining avenues through which teacher education programs problematize racial mismatch in K-12 classrooms. More specifically, the article describes the efforts of a regional teacher education program to support its pre-service teachers by providing opportunities to engage with racially diverse populations of students. This was accomplished through an elementary and middle school STEM summer enrichment program serving over 500 students from Title I schools. Pre-service teachers were surveyed about their experience and reported how they perceive students, race, and themselves within the context of a Title I school setting. Findings, centering on the exploration of pre-service teachers' attitudes, suggest the need for pre-service teachers to be engaged with diverse school settings and populations during their teacher education programs.

30. Truth-Telling: Critical Inquiries on LLMs and the Corpus Texts That Train Them

Abstract

The concept 'literacy crisis' has framed ChatGPT's popularity, its rapid evolution, and its seemingly sophisticated language and knowledge performance. The concept helps scholars and teachers easily enter conversations about artificial intelligence (AI) text generation technologies and how they transform the notions of authorship, research, labor, copyright, and writing. Antonio Byrd uses the literacy crisis as a starting point in this essay but in the opposite direction. By responding to literacy crises with a back-to-basics pedagogy, composition studies has participated in histories of linguistic punishment that have shaped how writers produce, edit, and publish texts; these punishments create the presence of power and ideology in the corpus texts large language models (LLMs) use for training. While learning new literacy practices and teaching strategies with LLMs, there is also the responsibility for participating in the creation of the next iteration of public data that contain contemporary ideologies on language and culture. AI and writing involve critical inquiry on relationships with these corpus texts. Integrating this critical inquiry may maximize students' writing practices with AI and extend their rhetorical awareness of what's at stake when they go public with their writing to participate in cultural and political conversations.

31. Preservice Teachers' Self-Efficacy for Teaching Mathematics

Abstract

The perception of self-efficacy introduced by Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory is defined as a person's view of their capacity to organize and carry out the activities necessary for success in a specific situation. The most effective mathematics teachers believe that they are a capable and important influence on their students' understanding of mathematics, which is known as having a high self-efficacy for teaching mathematics. As efficacy for teaching is more difficult to change after the teacher enters the classroom, attending to preservice teachers' mathematics self-efficacy is worthy of examination within the teacher preparation program. The purpose of this study was to determine elementary and early childhood preservice teachers' self-efficacy beliefs related to teaching mathematics. Elementary and early childhood preservice teachers' (n = 203) mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs, including personal mathematics teaching efficacy and mathematics teaching outcome expectations, were measured at the beginning of the semester prior to internship. Responses indicated that participants had strong personal mathematics teaching efficacy but only modest expectations of their ability to positively influence students' mathematical learning. Implications for practice and future research are shared.

32. Cultivating STEM/Health Identities and Talent in Historically Marginalized Populations Through Equity-Focused Place-Based Learning: The Rush Education and Career Hub (REACH) Model

Abstract

Students of color, first-generation, and residents of communities experiencing disinvestment--who aspire to obtain meaningful postsecondary degrees, career success, financial security, and social mobility--face tremendous challenges in navigating science, technology, engineering, math, and health science (STEM-H) education and career sectors. The Rush Education and Career Hub (REACH) utilizes a place-based workforce intermediary model that joins an academic medical center with academic institutions, community-based organizations, and employers to increase and broaden STEM-H participation. REACH provides innovative, hands-on learning for underrepresented youth cradle-to-career to increase postsecondary achievement and diversity in STEM-H professions through: (1) early and sustained access to high quality STEM-H education experiences, (2) paid work-based learning paired with professional development, (3) the ability to earn recognized industry credentials, (4) mentorship to facilitate participant engagement and promote program completion, and (5) OutREACH community engagement that provides information, resources and wraparound supports for students, their families, and the community. Preliminary findings suggest that this model inspires and prepares young people for success. REACH offers institutions an equity-centered community-engaged framework for cultivating education and workforce partnerships to foster opportunities, support, and the relationships necessary to thrive in STEM-H for those who have historically been denied.

The Inquiry Initiative, launched by the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) in the summer of 2022, brought together faculty experts from across the nation to collaborate on issues of equity in education. Our group was tasked with considering how we--and others in the field of education--might promote equity in education by disrupting existing social and educational inequities. Each member of our group brought a wealth of experiences, knowledge, and skills to this ambitious and daunting task. In this paper, we use group formation theory as a lens to examine and reflect on the beginning stages of our group's journey and consider what lies ahead for us as we continue on this journey together.

40. Once Burned, Twice Shy? The Effect of Stock Market Bubbles on Traders that Learn by Experience

Abstract

We study how experience with asset price bubbles changes the trading strategies of reinforcement learning (RL) traders and ask whether the change in trading strategies helps to prevent future bubbles. We train the RL traders in a multi-agent market simulation platform, ABIDES, and compare the strategies of traders trained with and without bubble experience. We find that RL traders without bubble experience behave like short-term momentum traders, whereas traders with bubble experience behave like value traders. Therefore, RL traders without bubble experience amplify bubbles, whereas RL traders with bubble experience tend to suppress and sometimes prevent them. This finding suggests that learning from experience is a mechanism for a boom and bust cycle where the experience of a collapsing bubble makes future bubbles less likely for a period of time until the memory fades and bubbles become more likely to form again.

41. Hotspot Prediction of Severe Traffic Accidents in the Federal District of Brazil

Abstract

Traffic accidents are one of the biggest challenges in a society where commuting is so important. What triggers an accident can be dependent on several subjective parameters and varies within each region, city, or country. In the same way, it is important to understand those parameters in order to provide a knowledge basis to support decisions regarding future cases prevention. The literature presents several works where machine learning algorithms are used for prediction of accidents or severity of accidents, in which city-level datasets were used as evaluation studies. This work attempts to add to the diversity of research, by focusing mainly on concentration of accidents and how machine learning can be used to predict hotspots. This approach demonstrated to be a useful technique for authorities to understand nuances of accident concentration behavior. For the first time, data from the Federal District of Brazil collected from forensic traffic accident analysts were used and combined with data from local weather conditions to predict hotspots of collisions. Out of the five algorithms we considered, two had good performance: Multi-layer Perceptron and Random Forest, with the latter being the best one at 98% accuracy. Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

Fibromyalgia is a complicated and multifaceted disorder marked by widespread chronic pain, fatigue, and muscle tenderness. Current explanations for the pathophysiology of this condition include the Central Sensitization Theory, Cytokine Inflammation Theory, Muscle Hypoxia, Muscle Tender Point Theory, and Small Fiber Neuropathy Theory. The objective of this review article is to examine and explain each of these current theories and to provide a background on our current understanding of fibromyalgia. The medical literature on this disorder, as well as on the roles of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and elastography as diagnostic tools, was reviewed from the 1970s to early 2023, primarily using the PubMed database. Five prominent theories of fibromyalgia etiology were examined: 1) Central Sensitization Theory; 2) Cytokine Inflammation Theory; 3) Muscle Hypoxia; 4) Muscle Tender Point Theory; and 5) Small Fiber Neuropathy Theory. Previous fMRI studies of FMS have revealed two key findings. First, patients with FMS show altered activation patterns in brain regions involved in pain processing. Second, the connectivity between brain structures in individuals diagnosed with FMS and healthy controls is different. Both of these findings will be expanded upon in this paper. The article also explores the potential for future research in fibromyalgia due to the advancements in fMRI and elastography techniques, such as shear wave ultrasound. Increased understanding of the underlying mechanisms contributing to fibromyalgia symptoms is necessary for improved diagnosis and treatment, and advanced imaging techniques can aid in this process.

Abstract

Introduction: Fetal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) is a rapidly evolving field that provides valuable insight into brain development before birth. Accurate segmentation of the fetal brain from the surrounding tissue in nonstationary 3D brain volumes poses a significant challenge in this domain. Current available tools have 0.15 accuracy. Aim: This study introduced a novel application of artificial intelligence (AI) for automated brain segmentation in fetal brain fMRI, magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Open datasets were employed to train AI models, assess their performance, and analyze their capabilities and limitations in addressing the specific challenges associated with fetal brain fMRI segmentation. Method: We utilized an open-source fetal functional MRI (fMRI) dataset consisting of 160 cases (reference: fetal-fMRI - OpenNeuro). An AI model for fMRI segmentation was developed using a 5-fold cross-validation methodology. Three AI models were employed: 3D UNet, VNet, and HighResNet. Optuna, an automated hyperparameter-tuning tool, was used to optimize these models. Results and Discussion: The Dice scores of the three AI models (VNet, UNet, and HighRes-net) were compared, including a comparison between manually tuned and automatically tuned models using Optuna. Our findings shed light on the performance of different AI models for fetal resting-state fMRI brain segmentation. Although the VNet model showed promise in this application, further investigation is required to fully explore the potential and limitations of each model, including the HighRes-net model. This study serves as a foundation for further extensive research into the applications of AI in fetal brain fMRI segmentation.

Abstract

Despite tremendous advances in HIV research, women and gender diverse people-particularly women from racial and ethnic groups under-represented in research, transgender women, and young women-remain disproportionately affected by HIV. Women and gender diverse people face unique challenges and have been under-represented in HIV research. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is tasked to apply fundamental knowledge about the nature and behaviour of living systems to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce disability. Rigorous exploration of-and interventions for-the individual, social, biological, structural, and environmental factors that influence HIV prevention, transmission, treatment, and cure is crucial to advance research for women, girls, and gender diverse people across the lifespan. In this Position Paper, we introduce a framework for an intersectional, equity-informed, data-driven approach to research on HIV and women and highlight selected issues for women and gender diverse people, including HIV prevention, HIV cure, ageing with HIV, substance use and misuse, violence, pregnancy, and breastfeeding or chestfeeding. This framework underlines a new HIV and Women Signature Programme from the NIH Office of AIDS Research and Office of Research on Women's Health that advances the NIH vision for women's health, in which all women receive evidence-based HIV prevention, treatment, and care across their lifespan tailored to their unique needs, circumstances, and goals. The time is now to centre the health of women, girls, and gender diverse people across the HIV research continuum.

Abstract

Enasidenib (ENA) is an inhibitor of isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2) approved for the treatment of patients with IDH2-mutant relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In this phase 2/1b Beat AML substudy, we applied a risk-adapted approach to assess the efficacy of ENA monotherapy for patients aged ≥60 years with newly diagnosed IDH2-mutant AML in whom genomic profiling demonstrated that mutant IDH2 was in the dominant leukemic clone. Patients for whom ENA monotherapy did not induce a complete remission (CR) or CR with incomplete blood count recovery (CRi) enrolled in a phase 1b cohort with the addition of azacitidine. The phase 2 portion assessing the overall response to ENA alone demonstrated efficacy, with a composite complete response (cCR) rate (CR/CRi) of 46% in 60 evaluable patients. Seventeen patients subsequently transitioned to phase 1b combination therapy, with a cCR rate of 41% and 1 dose-limiting toxicity. Correlative studies highlight mechanisms of clonal elimination with differentiation therapy as well as therapeutic resistance. This study demonstrates both efficacy of ENA monotherapy in the upfront setting and feasibility and applicability of a risk-adapted approach to the upfront treatment of IDH2-mutant AML. Abstract

The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) is a widely used resource that comprehensively organizes and defines the phenotypic features of human disease, enabling computational inference and supporting genomic and phenotypic analyses through semantic similarity and machine learning algorithms. The HPO has widespread applications in clinical diagnostics and translational research, including genomic diagnostics, gene-disease discovery, and cohort analytics. In recent years, groups around the world have developed translations of the HPO from English to other languages, and the HPO browser has been internationalized, allowing users to view HPO term labels and in many cases synonyms and definitions in ten languages in addition to English. Since our last report, a total of 2239 new HPO terms and 49235 new HPO annotations were developed, many in collaboration with external groups in the fields of psychiatry, arthrogryposis, immunology and cardiology. The Medical Action Ontology (MAxO) is a new effort to model treatments and other measures taken for clinical management. Finally, the HPO consortium is contributing to efforts to integrate the HPO and the GA4GH Phenopacket Schema into electronic health records (EHRs) with the goal of more standardized and computable integration of rare disease data in EHRs.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Large introductory lecture courses are frequently post-secondary students first formal interaction with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Grade outcomes in these courses are often disparate across student populations, which, in turn, has implications for student retention. This study positions such disparities as a manifestation of systemic inequities along the dimensions of sex, race/ethnicity, income, and first-generation status and investigates the extent to which they are similar across peer institutions. RESULTS: We examined grade outcomes in a selected set of early STEM courses across six large, public, research-intensive universities in the United States over ten years. In this sample of more than 200,000 STEM course enrollments, we find that course grade benefits increase significantly with the number of systemic advantages students possess at all six institutions. The observed trends in academic outcomes versus advantage are strikingly similar across universities despite the fact that we did not control for differences in grading practices, contexts, and instructor and student populations. The findings are concerning given that these courses are often students first post-secondary STEM experiences. CONCLUSIONS: STEM course grades are typically lower than those in other disciplines; students taking them often pay grade penalties. The systemic advantages some student groups experience are correlated with significant reductions in these grade penalties at all six institutions. The consistency of these findings across institutions and courses supports the claim that inequities in STEM education are a systemic problem, driven by factors that go beyond specific courses or individual institutions. Our work provides a basis for the exploration of contexts where inequities are exacerbated or reduced and can be used to advocate for structural change within STEM education. To cultivate more equitable learning environments, we must reckon with how pervasive structural barriers in STEM courses negatively shape the experiences of marginalized students.
