Abstract

ObjectiveFor patients with drug–resistant focal epilepsy, intracranial monitoring remains the gold standard for surgical intervention. Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is the most common cause of pharmacoresistant focal epilepsy in pediatric patients who usually develop seizures in early childhood. Timely removal of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) is necessary to achieve lasting seizure freedom and favorable developmental and cognitive outcomes to improve the quality of life. We applied brain network analysis to investigate potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of EZ that will aid in the resection for pediatric focal epilepsy patients with FCD type II.MethodsTen pediatric patients with focal epilepsy diagnosed as FCD type II and that had a follow–up after resection surgery (Engel class I [n = 9] and Engel class II [n = 1]) were retrospectively included. Time–frequency analysis of phase transfer entropy, graph theory analysis, and power spectrum compensation were combined to calculate brain network parameters based on interictal epileptiform discharges from ECoG.ResultsClustering coefficient, local efficiency, node out–degree, and node out–strength with higher values are the most reliable biomarkers for the delineation of EZ, and the differences between EZ and margin zone (MZ), and EZ and normal zone (NZ) were significant (p < 0.05; Mann–Whitney U-test, two–tailed). In particular, the difference between MZ and NZ was significant for patients with frontal FCD (MZ > NZ; p < 0.05) but was not significant for patients with extra–frontal FCD.ConclusionsBrain network analysis, based on the combination of time–frequency analysis of phase transfer entropy, graph theory analysis, and power spectrum compensation, can aid in the diagnosis of EZ for pediatric focal epilepsy patients with FCD type II.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to suggest a suitable learning style for 300 college students who are attending Duniversity in Jeonnam providence according to QSSC(Questionnaire of Sasang Contribution Classification), major and brain dominance after finding out the difference of learning style according to Sasang constitution and major and brain dominance according to major. First, Soyangin`s learning style was found out extroversion -type, but soeumin`s learning style was found out introvert type. There was difference on physical type on learning style according to major. Third, there were found difference for a few questionnaire of the dominance of brain. According to above findings, The results of study suggest that we need to develop a unique teaching method which based on learners constitution and major instead of uniform teaching method.

Abstract

Purpose The aim of this study is to investigate seizure outcomes following epilepsy surgery in non-lesional neocortical pediatric epilepsy. Methods We performed a retrospective study on 27 patients with intractable childhood epilepsy who received epilepsy surgery between 1999 and 2006 at Sang-gye Paik Hospital and Severance Children's Hospital. None of the patients had any detectable lesions on MRI. Surgical outcome was assessed at least 2 years postoperatively; clinical characteristics, surgical outcome, pathologic findings, types of surgery, localizing features on SPECT, FDG-PET, and long-term video-EEG were reviewed. Results Eighteen patients (67%) demonstrated an Engel class I outcome postoperatively. The mean follow-up duration was 4.3 years (range, 2.2–9 years). Eighteen out of 27 cases (67%) showed focal localizing features on ictal SPECT, and 21 of 27 cases (78%) showed abnormal findings on PET. Single lobectomy was the most common procedure, and was performed in 20 patients (74%). Multilobar resection was performed in seven patients (26%). Cortical dysplasia was the most common finding during pathological examination, and was observed in 15 (56%) cases. In addition, gliosis was found in two patients (7%) and non-specific pathological findings were described in 10 patients (37%). Conclusions In children with intractable epilepsy and a MRI demonstrating no abnormal lesions, epileptic surgery should be strongly considered when cortical pathology can be identified from other studies.
